Starting point is 00:00:02 It's been a while since we've talked prospects. Let's do it next on Fantasy Baseball today in five. Welcome into FBT and 5. As always, make sure to follow and stream us on Spotify. Today is Saturday, July 30th. I am Frank Sample, joined by Scott White. Five prospects on the verge. Miguel Vargas of the Dodgers, Jared Kelnick of the Mariners,
Starting point is 00:00:25 D.L. Hall of the Orioles, Alec Berlison of the Cardinals, and Corbyn Carol, a new edition of the Airways, of the Arizona Diamondback. Scott, talk to me about D.L. Hall, I feel like could be coming with Tyler Wells landing on the IL. And Corbyn Carroll is just tearing up the minor leagues this season. Yes, he is.
Starting point is 00:00:46 So we'll start with D.L. Hall, who I think had reached a point where, like, it was any day now for him. Every start could be his last in the minors. He had overcome a pitch tipping issue. and in the five starts that followed a 0.83 ERA, 0.83 whips, 17.4K per nine. You only two strikeouts per inning. And like, you know, he's never been a stranger to strikeouts.
Starting point is 00:01:14 A left-hander who can reach triple digits, you know, you don't see that much. Like Shane McClanahan and D.L. Hall might be the next to do it, you know. But then his most recent start, he allowed six-herstern. runs in two-thirds of an inning. So I don't know what that means for D.L. Hall's time table. I don't really know what happened to cause things to go so poorly. When he has struggled in the past, it's usually because of walks. And that remains an issue for him.
Starting point is 00:01:43 It wasn't as bad during that great five-star stretch, but it still wasn't great. If anything's going to hold him back, I think that's it. But the guy has ridiculous stuff. And in spite of this ugly outing last time, we are going to see him sooner than later. I believe. So that's D.L. Hall. Corbyn Carroll, yes, he has been added here to my five on the verge, partly because, you know, it's almost August.
Starting point is 00:02:10 Maybe by the time you're seeing this, it is August. And, you know, at this stage of the season, there's not a lot left that we're waiting to see promoted. I don't know that Corbyn Carroll's going to get the call this year, but, you know, a big part of the thinking is just how impactful is the play you're going to be if he gets the call. And I think Corbyn Carroll heading into next year will be the top prospect in baseball.
Starting point is 00:02:33 He's played like 120 games in the minors since the start of, I don't even know what year it was, 2019, 2018, something like that. The pandemic year, he lost obviously, as all minor leaguers did. And then last year he had a shoulder injury early on that cost him almost the full season. And yet he has,
Starting point is 00:02:56 even with those interruptions, he's just breezed through the Diamondbacks minor league season, crushing it at every level, developed more power as he climbed the ladder. It's always been a great source of speed and good plate discipline and just seems like a baseball prodigy
Starting point is 00:03:12 does Corbyn Carroll. So if the Diamondbacks wanted to get aggressive and promote him, then you definitely want to have him on your roster if they did decide to do that, even though it may be a long shot. I was going to say if the Diamondbacks were competing for something. Maybe they would be more inclined to call up
Starting point is 00:03:30 Corbyn Carroll. Yeah. But I was pulling up the NL Wildcard standings. There's six and a half out. It's not likely that they make a run, but you're right. I mean, Corbyn Carroll is just having a ridiculous season. 312 batting average, 440
Starting point is 00:03:46 OBP, 20 homers, 25 steals, OPS approaching 1100. It's just bonkers. He's having a ridiculous season. Five prospects that are on the periphery. These are prospects doing something of note as of late. Noel V. Marte. Shortstop with the Mariners.
Starting point is 00:04:03 Oscar Coloss, outfielder with the White Sox. Jared Schuster, a starting pitcher with the Braves. Christian Encarnacion Strand. Third baseman with the twins. And Evan Carter in outfielder with the Rangers. All right. So let's start with Noel V. Marte. Who's the most well-known of this group? He was a you was bordering on like a top 20 prospect overall coming into the season,
Starting point is 00:04:28 had a breakout year last year, but came in kind of out of shape and struggled in all facets of the game. It's always been a long shot for him to stay at shortstop, but he was struggling there. He wasn't doing anything at the plate, and it looked like his prospect status was getting ready to plummet, and then he caught fire in July, and I think relieved a lot of those concerns. Again, he's not going to be a shortstop long term, but as long as his, as long as his growth doesn't affect his hitting, there's going to be a spot for him in the lineup, I would say. Oscar Colos has seen his prospect stock surge just in the last few weeks. This was a pretty
Starting point is 00:05:12 high-profile international signing this offseason, originally from Cuba, but then played in Japan as well. And, you know, at 23, he kind of had to hit the ground running to avoid that fourth outfielder profile, I think. And suddenly he has. I mean, the hitting numbers have just been ridiculous. The line drive rate, the strikeout rate has led to this very high batting average. And the funny thing is, like, more than anything, the white sucks like in first power. And that isn't even, you know, the power's picked up recently, but it's the overall hitting profile that's in
Starting point is 00:05:50 trust me for Oscar Coloss, and I think he's very clearly a prospect now. Incarnazion Strand, emerging third-based prospect for the twins. He has a ton of power. Evan Carter is a Rangers outfielder who showed great plate discipline when he first entered the minors last year,
Starting point is 00:06:12 and a lot of prospect hounds liked him for the athleticism to go along with that plate discipline. It's really showed up recently. He's starting to get home runs. he's starting to get stolen bases. And yeah, the plate discipline remains really good for Evan Carter. He's getting it done at high a even as a 19-year-old. All right.
Starting point is 00:06:28 For more extensive fantasy baseball coverage, listen to the Fantasy Baseball Today podcast on Spotify, Apple Podcast, Stitcher, your smart speakers or anywhere else podcasts are found.
