Might we see Pete Crowe Armstrong in September?
Find out next on Fantasy Baseball today in five.
Welcome into FBT and Five on Saturday, August 19th.
I am Frank Sample, joined by Scott White.
And before we get into the Five on the Verge,
I do want to point out that the Cardinals listened to us last week.
They promoted Mason Wynn on Friday.
You're listening to this on Saturday.
If you want to hear more about Mason Wynne,
we discussed him on Friday's full-length fantasy baseball.
Ball Today podcast. The five prospects on the verge of getting called up. We've got Michael
Bush with the Dodgers, Edward Cabrera, we're kind of stretching prospect here. Edward Cabrera
with the Marlins, Pete Crowe Armstrong with the Cubs, Sedane Raphaela with the Red Sox, and
Brett Beatty with the New York Mets. Scott, your thoughts? So yeah, I am stretching the definition of
prospects. So many prospects have already graduated to the majors or they got some time there and were
sent back down, which makes it harder to justify stashing them.
I'm thinking Colton Couser specifically.
So, yeah, I'm including guys like Edward Cabrera here, Brett Beatty, who don't qualify as
prospects anymore.
They've gotten too much action in the majors.
But, you know, the spirit of this list is to come up with players, minor league players
who are worth stashing even when they're out of sight, out of mind.
And I would say those two, especially Cabrera, fit the bill.
I can't think of another minor league pitcher more worthy of stashing right now than Cabrero,
who really just needs to get back to throwing strikes.
And through two minor league starts, he's done that.
Marlins have talked a little bit with the media about the potential for him coming back soon.
And there's a chance Edward Cabrero could be impactful with his strikeout potential down the stretch.
Of course, nothing has changed with Michael Bush.
She continues to demolish AAA pitching as a 25-year-old.
Overstate is welcome down there, but the Dodgers are not making room for him.
We did see his counterpart, his AL counterpart, Jonathan Arunda, get the call for the raise,
but he hasn't really seen any action since getting called up.
So who knows what's going on with those two?
I love the upside, but opportunity remains in question.
Sedan Rafael and Pete Crowell.
Armstrong and similar are similar in that they are standout defenders in center field,
guys who can run well, steal some bases, have hit for power in the miners, but it's not a lot of
raw power.
And so it's questionable how that's actually going to translate to the majors.
Their defense is going to assure that their starters in the majors someday, whether it's
late this year or next year.
but will the bat be enough for fantasy use?
There's reasons to believe it might be,
but it's not a slam dunk in either case, I would say.
All right, let's take a look at the five prospects on the periphery.
These are prospects doing something of note as of late.
And we'll start with Owen Casey in outfielder with the Cubs.
Pedro Leon in outfielder with the Astros,
Drew Thorpe, a starting pitcher with the Yankees,
Willier, Abraeu, and Alfielder with the Red Sox.
Christian Scott, a starting pitcher with the Mets.
Drew Thorpe, Scott, someone I noticed who recently got promoted and then had another
awesome start, I believe it was at AA.
So probably not going to make an impact anytime soon, but yeah, he's been doing it.
He has, and this is his first year as a professional.
He's 22, I believe, 21, 22.
So he's not young, and he's already at AA.
There's a good chance we see him next year, I would say.
Rutherpa of the Yankees, if he keeps this going.
That start, his double A debut, eight innings, two hits, no walks, nine strikeouts.
And he was doing that kind of stuff regularly at High A.
That was his, in fact, this was his third start this season with eight innings or more and two hits or fewer,
which, I mean, in the minor league ranks, you just don't see pitchers take on that kind of workload normally.
And yet even with that workload, he has yet to throw 100 pitches in a start.
So Drew Thorpe, very efficient, has been getting plenty of strikeouts.
I thought it was mostly because he has a good change-up,
and A-ball hitters just weren't prepared for that.
But the fact his double-A's debut went this well,
I think is very encouraging for Drew Thorpe's future,
and he's somebody who definitely needs to be on Dynasty Radars now.
Owen Casey of the Cubs, classic guy who hits the ball very hard,
but maybe not often enough.
well he's been striking out less lately
and the numbers are starting to look really good for him
so Owen Casey I would say is emerging as a legit dynasty asset too
Pedro Leon of the Astros
was a big signing out of Cuba a couple years ago
and just didn't do much in the miners
now he's 25 years old at AAA
and it's been very hot lately for the season
he's basically been a 2015
guy, 20 home or 15 steel guy so far.
I don't think there's an opening for him in the Astros lineup really, but he's seen action
in the infield and outfield in the minors and could maybe come up be a super utility
type for them down the stretch.
Just kind of more an interesting player than a high-end prospect is Pedro Leon.
But it's a name to know.
And finally, I'll mention this for Christian Scott of the Mets, really under radar pitching
prospect, who was primarily a release.
to begin his professional career.
He's been a full-time starter this year.
And in his last few starts here,
he has had a strike percentage of 71%
and a swinging strike percentage of 19%.
Basically, the only major leaguer
who compares to that first number is George Kirby,
and the only one who compares to that second number
is Spencer Strider.
It is just over a short stretch.
I'm trying to see exactly how many starts.
I think it was five starts.
Five starts that he's done that.
71% strike rate,
19% swinging strike rate.
But it's enough to think Christian Scott
is a name to know.
Nothing else.
All right.
