I'm from New York.
Brew, let me tell you something.
I knew it was coming.
I know, KW.
I was right yesterday.
Yes, of course.
And I'm already slightly like, oh.
Can we all be honest?
Go ahead.
And this is, I promise, KW, this is not a knock at your Patriots at all.
Guaranteed it will be.
But the NFL is better when it's the Chiefs, the Bill.
and the Ravens fighting for the way it's supposed to be in this era.
Yes, yes.
Last year, the Chiefs are out, the Ravens are out, the Bill's can't even win the division.
It is, I'm not saying they don't always.
It just didn't feel right.
It just, we feel like we're back.
And I hope you guys can replace the bills on that list.
But it's better when the Ravens are great, the Chiefs are great.
I agree.
Some Northeastern AFC team will see.
It's better.
It's like the Patriots and the Colts and the Oaks.
Like you didn't want to see Mark Brunel and the Jags crash the party.
Didn't want it.
I'm going to let it slide.
We're back.
We are back.
Today, Mahomes is back and so are the Chiefs.
How dangerous is Kansas City now?
Meanwhile, how will a record-setting offensive weekend
affect the second episode.
of bruise a ballot.
And finally, well, it's the coldest segment in all of sports,
a frosty edition of Mahomes Mountain alongside
Chris Brousard.
I'm Kevin Wilde and Nick Wright, who is...
There's no way that the cup of coffee was going to withstand them.
I mean, yeah, it didn't spill.
It just erupted.
It erupted like the Chiefs rushing attack yesterday.
Oh, my.
Oh, my.
I'm trying to support you.
I'm trying to support you.
I know.
It's a lot right now.
I think he's so excited he's coming over Thursday.
What?
Well, let's not go that far.
We're starting in Kansas City where Mahomes is back, the defense is back, the cheats are back,
and the running back is actually brand new.
Chiefs win by 21.
Here's Patrick Mahomes.
I just wanted to play.
I've done so much rehab and so much work to kind of put myself in this position.
I just wanted to get out there and play.
This is what you do it for, and I was able to play and go out there, and my guys around me kind of helped me.
So whenever I wasn't, I feel like I didn't play my best football.
We still were able to go out there and beat a really good football team pretty well.
And it's because the guys around me stepped up and knew that they're going to have to help me as I kind of get back into the rhythm of things.
You had several predictions leading up to this game.
Several of them, even the minor ones, came true.
Even Mansour Delane's out there with his shoulder was good for a little bit.
a while, made a play and then out. All right, was there ever any doubt? I have a confession
to you guys in the audience. Wow. Because I've been holding something back all off season.
And it's killed me. It really has. Because I, you know, I don't try not to talk about it a lot,
but I think the audience, the, you know, careful viewer has realized I've been lucky enough over the
last five, six years to develop a relationship with the quarterback of my hometown team, Patrick
Mahomes. It's why, you know, in our predictions week grand finale, you know, he has a little
cameo at the end. And he told me, long time ago, some things he was going to do. And I shared a few
of those with you guys, but I didn't tell you, I just said I knew. And you're like, you can't
report this. I'm like, I'm reporting. And I told you he was going to be dancing at Travis
Kelsey's wedding.
I told you he was going to be starting week one,
but I didn't tell you everything,
because there was one final piece to Patrick announcing his return.
What was it?
Well, he was going to be running in the Chief's first touchdown of the year.
Oh, to make it clear.
He told you that?
Oh, let's not get into the specifics, brew,
but to make it clear that he's back,
and he was so dead set on doing it, he did it twice.
I know.
Because listen, here's the touchdown, and it's awesome.
But the play before, he ran in a touchdown from the five.
There was like, all right, I'm going to show everyone I'm back,
because I'm going to barrel into the end zone.
Bam, I'm back.
Oh, there's a hold?
Okay, I guess I'll do it again this time from 15 yards out.
I thought of Denver.
Like, surely he's not going to do this, do it again, right?
Guys, want to keep an eye on Patrick Malmes?
And I did warn everyone.
all off season that their analysis of this team was flawed.
Oh, that defense that wasn't that good last year
lost all these players.
What's it going to look like?
They spent all their resources on addressing the pass rush
and spent the sixth pick on the secondary
then brought back Ligeria Sneed,
who evidently can only play pro football
when he's wearing a Chiefs uniform.
Titans fans, sorry that they were going to be fine there.
that Patrick, all he wants is protection, and he'll figure the rest out,
and even with an undrafted rookie free agent that I was nervous about,
but shout out to him for more than holding his own.
And, and we'll talk more about this later,
but that the biggest upgrade in the league was what the Chiefs did at running back,
where all of a sudden they have a real running game.
You add all that together, you add in Patrick's historical dominance over his divisional opponent,
And of course there was never a doubt, Kevin Wilde.
Ask Greg Jennings when he comes out here.
Greg didn't cancel him.
Greg showed up, but he was a tad late.
And he texts me around 805.
He's like, I'm going to get there at 8.30.
And I text him right back.
Oh, so you won't see the Chief's opening touchdown.
He was like, you must be crazy.
He walked in at 7-0.
No, there's never a doubt.
And everything's back to being right in the NFL world, bro.
I'm going to be honest.
I didn't really plan anything for this.
I just wanted to enjoy the show.
I mean, the questions for Nick, first of all.
Nick was there for a doubt.
Who wants to go right day?
So I was just ready to sit here and watch the banners drop.
I wasn't sure if there'd be confetti or whatever, but I mean, I got stuff.
But I don't really know what the question is for me.
I had doubts.
Obviously, I picked Denver to win.
You got some?
No, can I just show one thing about Patrick before we get to the bigger picture stuff that I think we're fired up for?
He's right.
I just, I didn't know what to say.
Before we do that just real quick, because I do think, listen, the Chiefs either need
Rishie Rice or Xavier Worthy to get a lot better, a lot quickly, very quickly, or add a receiver.
I think that is true for the long term
for this team's ability to win a Super Bowl
but I thought
when people were like
ah Patrick how did he play
it felt to me
like he had a quarter and a half a rust
and then shook it all off
if you look at his numbers on how
he listen he started terribly
I mean he ran the ball but like he didn't
I mean 14 yards on 12
pass attempts
13 of 15
so two incompletions
one was a missed pass and the other
Greg and Troy Aikman said that was Xavier Worthy's fault, the interception.
I don't know.
Listen, it goes on the resume, whatever.
It clearly was, yeah, it wasn't.
I mean, it was a perfect dot to the Broncos safety.
So it was some type of miscommunication, whether there's Patrick mistakes or Xavier's mistake.
But he got it going within the game, even though they, you know, it was all quick stuff.
After the game, he said he thought he needed to do a better job, trusting the line and working the
progressions, and the Chiefs called a game as they called a game like they were up against a good
pass rush with a replacement offensive lineman, but not like they had an injured quarterback.
And I know that because they called a speed option, bro.
Yeah.
They called it like they were truly treating Patrick like he was fully healthy because he's been
telling them he's fully healthy.
All right.
Kenneth Walker went from Super Bowl MVP to Monday night MVP, ran the ball 23 times, caught three
passes and out gained all of the Broncos.
Total yards last night.
The Broncos had 176.
Kenneth Walker had 191.
One of many impressive performances.
Brew, if you're prepped for this one, what impressed you the most about the Chiefs
last night?
Well, let me look, I was impressed by a lot.
I was impressed by their defense, Nick.
I was stunt.
Now, look, Denver doesn't have the greatest offense, although I did expect Jalen
Waddle to take it to another level.
Did he play?
Even a level.
Three targets.
I think two catches or whatever.
They have a great offensive line.
They're supposed to have a great offensive line.
And they didn't run much.
Look, the Chiefs outcoached them.
We can get to that later.
I thought Andy Reid, undressed Sean Payton, and the rest of the staff,
be into me, Spagnolo.
But the defense to be that good, we talked, and I pointed it out all offseason.
They lost three quarters of their defensive.
backfield and they came
and I mean they it looked like
one of the best defenses in the league
so that stunned me
Kenneth Walker stunned me
now I know he's good but he
is not supposed to
be like a Derek Henry or
Jamir Gibbs or one of the top five
running backs in the league although
he was foot and I get it
this college most of the pros were fun out
he was awesome he was the best running back
in the nation his last year
at Michigan State led to league and
or the nation in rushing has never been a feature back.
Now, you can say, okay, he showed them he wasn't good enough to be a feature back, I guess,
because he's always split time.
But this year he's going to be the featureback, and he's off to a rousing start.
So he was phenomenal.
But of all those things that surprised me, Nick, I have to say the thing that was the most
was the offensive line.
The run game, like Denver was not just a great.
We talked about the 68 sack.
They were second in the league last year against the run.
And the Chiefs ran for 220 yards against them.
And Kenneth Walker was, like I said, look phenomenal.
The mistackles, sure, I don't think that's going to continue for the Broncos.
I don't know what they were doing in training camp.
A lot of these teams aren't getting physical and doing a lot of tackling in training camp,
so that may have been a part of it.
But then the protection.
We all talked about the undrafted rookie Khalil Benson,
that was starting at left tackle to give up two sacks of Mahomes
against this defense last year or how great they were last year.
That offensive line played on the run and the pass
was the most surprising to me.
So I don't think he didn't get charged with those.
No, he didn't.
So at 32-pass block snaps, he allowed just one pressure.
And he also didn't even play left tackle in college.
No.
Don't get me wrong.
I followed the Hoosiers.
No, he had never played left.
But he didn't play a little second.
And in training camp most of the time, he was playing right tackle.
He was competing to be the starting right tackle.
On the flip side of that, Mahomes also had 2.6 two seconds.
So he's getting the ball rid of it.
So it's a bit of a combo platter.
Mahomes also gets credit for that.
The pressure on Bo Nicks was nuts because this offensive line was supposed to be fantastic.
It's all they spent the draft on.
Second highest of his career, 45.5%.
He's running backwards every other play.
He had completion percentage 61.
Like, look, Bo Nix had a rough game.
But if you're getting pressured 55, 45% of the time, that's a chief stat.
That's not necessarily a Bo Nix.
Last year, game one, when they lost to the Chargers, the thing I signaled the alarm about was they couldn't get off the field on third down.
And it was Chris Jones and nobody else.
Carloftus wasn't, it didn't seem to be right.
All last year, their number one pick from a few years ago,
Felix and Adiq Azuma, pardon me.
You know, I'd been on IR and given the nothing through three years.
And they just couldn't get off the field.
They spent a first round pick on Peter Woods,
who a year before the draft was a projected top five pick.
They got him at 29th.
They spent the 40th pick on Armeson Thomas,
the edge rusher out of Oklahoma.
They kind of switch Felix from an edge rusher to a three technique,
so he's more on the inside.
They sign your guy, Kyris Tonga.
all of a sudden there's juice on the defensive line and the secondary can hold up.
Nate Tice, who I respect a lot, he was one of the Yahoo guys that would not, Yahoo, not as a negative thing,
but works for Yahoo Sports.
But NFL analyst, he tweeted early in the game because Delane was, you know, was after the chief's first possession,
that Mansour Delane and Noel Williams, this is his words, not mine, will be the best cornerback duo in the NFL sooner than you think.
This defense reminds me so much of 2022 when they got all that draft capital for trading Tyree Kill and spent it all on the defense.
Spaggs is brilliant and he's going to cook things up.
If they could do that against the Denver offensive line, they're going to have real pass rush juice.
It was a few years ago that when we were talking about the most sacks since like the Eagles in the 80s, whatever the record was, the Chiefs had a 60 plus sack season.
Again, Chris Jones was the only star guy they had it.
It was a bunch of corner blitzes and different things.
So I think the defense is going to be fine.
But the story to me is, of course, Kenneth Walker.
And this was the point that I tried to make all offseason.
I was not arguing he was the best player that changed teams.
But going from Jared Burs to Miles Garrett is going from driving a BMW to driving a Bentley.
You were in good shape either way.
And going from Stefan Diggs to A.J. Brown is going from driving a Toyota,
driving in infinity. Going from injured Isaiah Pacheco and Old Cream Hunt to Kenneth Walker is going
from a barefoot rickshaw to a Mercedes. It is such a massive upgrade that it's the single
biggest move of the offseason. It's bigger than it Jalen Waddle, DJ Moore, Miles Garrett,
it Trent McDuffie to the Rams. It's the single most important move of the offseason,
and they didn't have to trade anything for him. They just had to spend money.
And for Patrick to be able to this year get the Chiefs off, get off this list,
which is the longest droughts without a thousand-yard rusher, it's them, the Chargers,
the Saints, Broncos with six seasons, Washington with four.
He's never had one.
For yesterday's game by Kenneth Walker was the best game of running backs had with Mahomes'
as a quarterback since Cream Hunt,
Mahomes' first year as a starter.
That, the most yards
any running back got for the Chiefs last year in a game
was 100, 1004-yard game
by Cream Hunt. The most yards
per carry was 4.8
and one game by Pacheco.
Most yards have, so that's all
of last season, and he
does it against a great defense
in his first game as a chief. And I think
Brew, their backup, Emmett Johnson,
the rookie, is better than
Pacheco or Hunt
were last year.
I just think teams are going to have to actually defend.
Like, let me ask you this.
If you're the cults, you play the Chiefs Sunday night,
what are you spending most of this week's defensive game plan on?
Like, the fact that it's even a,
that's the first time the Holmes' whole career, this could be a question.
Now, part of that might be, ah, it's because the passing game didn't look that good.
So be it.
But don't you feel like they are spending most of their time?
Like, we're not getting run over like that.
After they let Derek Henry run for three touchdowns,
I'd be like, hey, we got to shore this up a little bit.
Broncos become the first team ever to win 14 games or more
and then start the season with a 20-point loss.
On the bright side, they also missed 28 tackles
and had a lifeless offense.
Here's Sean Payton.
Not a good evening.
Didn't do a lot well at all in the game.
Our third down numbers weren't good.
Our rushing numbers weren't good.
The time of possession, we put our defense in some short fields, but collectively, you know, we didn't tackle well enough.
Then the game became one-dimensional.
Really the antithesis of how you beat a good team on the road.
Were you surprised by Denver's dud?
Yes, because look, and I'm not saying they took the chiefs lightly, but even if you thought, okay, Mahomes not going to be himself, he's coming off the injury, whatever.
You still don't take them lightly because they're the chiefs and what they've done recent.
Like you, even if you think they're down, you're like, man, we're going to go in there and annihilate them and really bury them and mess up their mentality and all that.
So for Denver had to be motivated.
I'm sure Sean Payton had these guys hyped up and motivated, you know, to go out there and let's bury this team for good, all right?
week one show them there not what they used to be.
We're the team of the division right now.
And they got outdone in everything.
Like I said, I think Andy Reeves, Magnola, B. Enemy, they out coached Denver.
Sean Payton, they ran, I think, 15 times.
Now, they got his running backs, RJ Harvey and J.K. Dobbins, average five yards of carry.
And those two guys ran the ball 11 times.
Yeah.
And so I don't know why they didn't.
try to, they didn't try to establish the run.
I get it they got behind eventually, but for a while it was certainly within
range where you could have run the football.
So there wasn't, they didn't do that.
I think, like I said, for Kenneth Walker to do what he did.
And the tackling may have been a sign of what's been going on for the past month in the
Denver training.
I don't know, but that tackling was just atrocious.
And so I was stunned by how bad Denver looked.
I don't think they have a great office.
Even last year, I mean, it was middle of the road statistically,
but we know they look bad for three quarters of a lot of games
and it would come on at the end with something special.
But I thought, like I said earlier, Waddle would change that.
Nothing changed.
The defense didn't look anything like it did last year.
So, yeah, I'm very surprised at what Denver put out there last night.
Two things.
First, defense, then offense.
On the tackling.
There is a tweet from Trevor Sycamma.
However bad you thought the Broncos tackling was against the Chiefs, it was even worse.
Denver's 248 miss tackle yards allowed were the most in a single game in NextGen stats database.
There are basically 30% mistackle percentage is the third worst single game score since 2018.
So look, everyone's playing under the same rules in training camp.
Unless you have the softest training camp ever, that is an abysmal performance.
The other big, huh moment for me was third and one, let's roll Bow Nix out and throw the ball,
and then fourth and one, let's punt.
And Sean Payton giving up play calling duties.
That hits your radar, and then at halftime, we'll be like, we'll see what happens.
So can we, I think we should spend at least two minutes on the Sean Payton play calling thing.
But let me, can I do the other stuff first just for a moment?
All right, let's talk about the Denver defense.
I know I can be a broken record on this show sometimes
so it's because there are certain things about the NFL
I just fervently believe
and it goes against conventional wisdom at times
I do not really care about what defenses were good last year
when I'm talking about the defenses for this year
it can change
there is some correlation but not much
like Houston's been good
we'll see what happens this year
Denver was good the previous two years
we'll see what happens this year
Seattle was not that was it got good once they got Mike
McDonald's two years ago. It looks like they're going to be excellent again. But
the best offenses in the league are pretty consistent year over year to a degree. Best
defenses fluctuate a ton. I was, and that by the way, wearing a Broncos uniform does not
make you a great defense. The players do. Well, Jonathan Cooper is not there. He's on the
Commissioner of Zimplu's list. Jonathan Franklin Myers is not there. He plays for a different team.
So I was not as overwhelmed going into this game by the Denver defense necessarily as everyone else.
So there's that piece of it.
Then there's the quarterback who last year, Bo Nix, until he got down and they were desperate where he was brilliant was bad.
He was brilliant once they were trailing.
And yesterday he just played a whole game the way he played the beginnings of games last year.
and we can show it to you.
Last year, Bo Nix, when leading or tied,
a 76 rating, nine touchdowns, 10 picks, 5.8 yards per attempt.
Yesterday, the whole game, a little bit worse across the board.
He wasn't able to activate that bottom line thing
once they got down last year when he was utterly brilliant.
Now, was that a hot hand?
Was that a clutch?
Was that just luck?
I don't know.
but he had long stretches of games last year
where he looked like that player
and then flipped a switch and looked amazing
he couldn't flip the switch yesterday
he seemed legitimately rattled
and then there is the Sean Peyton Davis Webb thing
which is what I want to discuss
Davis Webb was in the running to be a head coach
he was potentially you know the bills
might have wanted him big jobs wanted him
That is the scenario under which Sean Payton dangled you can call plays to keep him in Denver.
Does Sean Payton ever really want that?
Did Sean Payton ever want to give up play calling?
I don't know.
I know that two quarters in to the first game of his career without calling plays,
he tells a reporter how unhappy he is about it.
So I can't imagine, A, Davis Webb feels totally secure.
I can just call my game plan and this is my job all year, that he's not, and if you're Davis Webb, you're like, wait a minute, I was this close to maybe being a head coach.
If I have this stripped of me, my career is going way backwards.
Sean Payton does not have a good poker face, never has, about who he's going to draft, about how he feels about things, about how he feels about previous coaches.
He needed to keep his feelings on that in-house.
I know.
And he couldn't.
But he was talking about like, oh, I got to put my, you know,
comms in a certain spot so I don't accidentally call the place.
He's still walking around with the play sheet.
Like, I don't know.
He's probably got one more game.
That's terrible.
And, well, and I, look, I agree that that would be unfortunate for him.
But if I'm Sean Payton and if the next game goes this badly, offensively,
I got a nip it in the bud before this thing gets out of hand and we can't even fight for the playoffs.
To his credit, he hired Vance Joseph, and that Dolphins' debacle was very early on in his tenure.
And that was, hey, you gave up 70 points to the Dolphin.
But he's not going to take over the defense.
Why?
Yeah.
But there was a lot of like, hey, this was a historic.
Of course, but he doesn't think he's an expert on calling defense.
Sean Payton thinks he's the greatest playfeller ever.
But more importantly, we're two down.
Denver, listen, Denver Broncos won 14 games last year.
They were the number one seed.
Bow Nix doesn't, and I feel, I legitimately,
scouts honor feel badly for Bronco fans that they don't get to see how last year would have ended with a healthy quarterback.
I'm not being smarter like that would be sick.
They accomplished a lot, and they won the division.
And I'd like to recognize their tenure atop the division.
It was nine months.
The Chiefs ran it for the nine years prior.
The Broncos clenched it on December 27th.
They held it for a few more weeks in the season ended.
The offseason, it was theirs, and it ended last night.
And that's worth something.
There's a lot of teams.
How long has been the Jets since the Jets won the AFCs?
A lot.
A long time.
How long has been since the Raiders won the A&A.
That's something.
Giants.
That's nine months longer than the Browns have had to top the AFC North in a long time.
Like, it's not nothing, guys.
No, you can create a baby.
Shout out Stink.
I'm calling your radio show tomorrow, buddy.
Next week, they host the Jags.
It's the only team that went into Denver and really put it on them last year.
Hey, check out the podcast and our YouTube channel if you get a chance.
Gianna's and the whole team is doing a fantastic job.
Comment of the day.
Brew had an amazing misdirection slash hezzy.
I don't know if we're calling it to hezy.
Oh, I like that.
No, it's both.
It's both.
Greg Jennings is here looking wonderful.
And we're talking about the Bengals.
Bengals won their opener against the Bucks.
And it's a good thing they got off to a hot start because if they struggle,
Joe Burrow could be on the move, according to Russell Wilson,
made his debut on CBS's Sunday pregame show and said this,
he's tired of losing.
He said that a few times.
He's really focused on making sure this is that special year.
And if it doesn't go well in Cincinnati this year, Joe Borough is gone.
I think he wants to leave.
Okay, might be just a rookie broadcasting mistake from Russell Wilson,
or it might be...
Well, here's the...
Tell in the future.
Can I just before...
I don't even want to give a take yet,
but I just want to elaborate when you're saying it...
could there's two forms of rookie broadcasting mistakes it could be okay form one is just giving your
opinion in a way that makes it sound like you're reporting something yeah um the other way
too hot of a take right the other way it could be a mistake is having real information that you
didn't mean to like you weren't supposed to share and so like there and we have no i obviously
no idea but there's a few different ways you let me let me say this piggybacking off your
you. He started, I watched the whole thing.
This guy. This guy, he's not doing misdirection. He's just watching the film.
He started off saying, we didn't show it. I was with him. He did.
Joe Burrow, a few times in New York. All right? He's, I saw him. That's what, that's a direct
quote. I was with him a few times in New York. I saw him. He said, he also added,
he's really focused on making this a special year.
year. So he kind of zeroed in on this one year. And so, and then, and then he said at one point,
I'm just telling you. Like after, after he said, you know, I think this could be, he said, I'm
just telling you. I'm just, so he put it in a context where it seemed like he, Joe had told
him. I want to add one more piece of context, because I think it's interesting.
Years ago, co-host of this show was Brandon Marshall. This is true.
Yes, this is a good story.
And before Russell Wilson had left Seattle,
when there was just only minor rumors about unhappiness.
Just a little bit.
Just a tiny bit.
Brandon came on the show, and basically was like,
I don't want to misquote Brandon,
but essentially said, man, Russ isn't happy and he could leave.
And most people, I think, looked at it as,
this guy's just talking.
Right.
But they had a relationship,
and he was 100% right.
And I don't know if Russ wanted Brandon to do that or not,
but it didn't end their relationship.
So it is now interesting to me.
It feels like Russ is now in the position Brandon was.
And so all of that context for this discussion we're having.
Here's what I'll say about this.
If Cincinnati's defense,
and I'm not saying they looked as good as the Chief's defense this weekend,
but that statistically,
And there was a good quarterback they're facing in Baker Mayfield and a, you know, good receivers on.
Right.
Right now that offense is 18th in points allowed and 12th in total yards allowed.
I'm saying if it stays around there, that's mediocre.
The Bengals defense.
Yeah, Bengals defense.
Let's say their Bengals defense stays around 15, 16th.
Then I don't want to hear from Joe Burrow like I got it.
I'm demanding a trade.
You have arguably the best receiving core
duo in the league.
They have spent money and draft capital
on trying to improve the offensive line.
The defense this offseason,
they put everything into improving that defense.
If that defense is mediocre,
which it was in week one,
I don't want to hear from Joe Burrow that I can't win here.
We don't have enough.
Because the reason they have not been good,
the last three years, they haven't made the playoffs
three straight years? It's because
Joe Burrow keeps getting hurt. Well, one
year he was healthy the whole year and the defense
was dead last. Right. That year, yeah,
he was great, defense was bad. But that's
what I'm saying. If the defense isn't
bottom of the league this year,
then I don't want to hear, like you got
it's on you.
Yeah, I don't want to hear you demand.
Well, if I'm the Bengals fan base and I'm
anything following
the Bengals, if I'm any individual that's following
the Bengals, I'm listening to Joe Burrow.
I happen to know, you know what, they have a website.
They have bangles.com.
And Jeff Hobson, like this is, Joe Burrow has already said.
He's kind of spoken not to this, but this is basically what I mean what I say.
I'm here for the long haul.
I'm not going anywhere.
I'm just trying to bring a championship mentality to the day by day process.
If you're not, what are you doing?
Attack the day with a championship mindset.
that the rest will take care of itself.
Those are words from Joe Burrow.
You took that at face value, though, Greg?
So I'm going to tell you, I did because of how he carries himself.
Like when Joe Burrow coming into the league, everybody was like, oh, man, don't go to the Bengals.
Don't go to the Bengals.
It's a bad organization.
Nobody would want to go there.
No free agents would want to go.
He took that as a challenge.
Like, no, I believe in me.
I can change things.
And so when you are that type of a person, I believe Lamar to be very similar, very loyal,
Joe Burrow talking about the window of opportunity.
The window is open as long as I'm here.
He believes that.
And so I just don't believe he's going to walk away from something that he has requested.
Like he wanted these receivers.
Yeah.
He wanted both of them to be there.
I mean, listen, flip side of that coin is, you're right, all those people told him don't go to Cincinnati.
out of. And then six years after being there, he's like, man, I don't know if I like playing football anymore.
Like he's doing a press conference. He's like, we're talking about emo Joe Burrow. And he's talking
about walking away from the, I don't want to overstate what he's saying, but he's, he seemed to be
more open to walking away from the game than any of the other star quarterbacks. We were talking
about Andrew Luck. We were talking about guys who had, you get beaten down too much, all the
injuries, all the different things. And so I don't know what's in Burroughs head. Burrow is, I
intensely personal
is personal the wrong
right word?
Private, private is what I meant to say. Thank you.
If you remember when
his house got burglarized and we learned
a little bit of his personal life, he
was really, he was almost tearful
about that because... He doesn't love being
famous. No, correct. That's what I, like, in a
way that is unique. Yeah. So I'm not
going to act like I know anything about
Joe Burrow, the guy, because he's been very
guarded. What I do know is
the Bengals should be on the clock. I don't
if they are, but they should be.
And to the, like,
if I were Joe Burrow, they would be
on the clock. If I were Joe
Burrow, I do not.
Even though you have the two, let's
say, the best receiving duo
in the league. Yeah, because I would feel
like you guys have
had ample
opportunity to
build
a better team around me
outside of the receivers. Now, again,
that's a, again, Brew, I'm talking
if their defense is bad again this year.
I agree with you.
If the defense takes a huge jump and the offense is bad,
that probably means Burrow wasn't that good.
Then that's a different story.
But I take this very seriously.
But he also expressed that he feels like the front office did their job.
They did their part.
They actually listened to some of the things that we were asking them to do.
And in turn brought in some of these guys on defense's side.
Now, the ownership can't determine how that manifests in terms of the play and the productivity and what that defense looks like.
That's on the coaching staff.
That's on the players now.
That's in our hands.
And that's what Joe Burrow has said.
It's on us now.
It's on us to do our part.
I get all that.
Just leave it at this.
If this season goes bad for them, if I'm Joe Burrow and I'm like, you know what, the Rams and the Vikings are sure interesting franchises that don't have quarterbacks.
Like, again, assuming that Stafford's done it for this year.
Like, if I'm...
If I'm Joe Burrow, I'm like, you know what, I...
Because look at what it did for Stafford.
It did for Stafford.
Look what Minnesota...
Minnesota is Justin Jefferson.
He's just like...
I'm just saying like there's...
It's not like he is short on options.
That'd be tempted.
Yeah.
All right, head back to Kansas City.
The Chiefs rolled last night, defying the predictions of Greg and Drew.
Going further, Greg, you have the Chiefs missing the
playoffs. Brew, you have
the Chiefs making the playoffs, but in
third place.
It was about the 7th season. It's only been
one game, but does anyone already regret
their Chief's predictions
that they don't win the AFC
West? Do you have Intel on Greg?
I'll be fair. Because it just says Greg and Brew.
I regret one of my Chief's predictions already.
What was it? I mean, I
had them going 12 and 5.
Okay. I just made me off that a bit.
That's maybe kick that.
up to 13 and 4.
But go ahead, Greg.
Sorry, I didn't mean to steal your thunder.
No, I'm going to stand 10 toes down on it.
Like, I don't regret not picking them to make the postseason.
It's week one.
And just like I didn't, I'm not going to overreact with the Packers or the Rams or the Bears.
I'm not going to overreact with this team, your team, the Chiefs.
Now, what I will say is, did have a.
me sitting on that couch like, boy, this might be a problem.
Yeah.
Because because I was, when you, when we do these predictions, we're like, everybody knows
you're going to run.
Everybody knows you brought Kenneth Walker in.
You're going to run the ball.
So, I mean, that's going to be the focal point.
We're going to stop that.
Yeah, that makes sense.
It kind of makes sense, right?
And so, you know, I'm looking at the chargers.
I'm looking at what they, you know, I'm looking at.
I kind of like these teams from a personnel standpoint from top to bottom.
Better than what I like the chiefs because there were a lot of unknowns, Nick.
I know you have insider information.
You knew that the defense was going to be great.
I knew that the defense is going to be great.
I knew that Spags was going to just.
Well, Spags have watched his whole career.
It's a All the Fame defense coordinator.
I still have them slotted finishing third in this division.
Brew is going to regret it.
Well, no, I would regret it.
if I didn't pick them to make the playoffs.
I think I would. Already just off of
one game? I think I would. But we'll see.
But bottom line, I don't regret what I've picked.
Here's what
as impressive as the Chiefs were.
I thought, I don't know
how to say it, the Chargers
and Broncos were more disappointing.
Agreed.
Yeah.
Well, luckily they're in the same division.
No. And I don't expect, there's one
week, like you said, I don't expect Denver
and the Chargers to be this bad.
If they are, I mean,
the Chiefs going to run away with the division.
So, no, I don't regret it.
And look, you alluded to it.
I'm sure Patrick Mahon is going to get better.
He did not throw the ball well last night.
No.
That receipt, their passing game was bad.
We talked about it earlier.
I don't think he completed a pass over 10 air yards.
No.
Obviously, he ended up with almost 200 yards,
which looks good, but it was Kelsey's 59-yard.
The touchdown pass to Rice was a great.
Rice broke two tackles.
So Patrick didn't throw it well.
I assume I expect that to improve,
but a lot of that wasn't just him.
He's going to obviously improve.
They're receiving court.
They need a receiving.
And Kelsey, that was a great play.
I would not expect that type of play to happen.
The rest of the season.
Yeah, I mean, that's not going to.
And up to that point, he wasn't really that much of a home.
factor. So they're receiving
once teams assuming
they'll be able to stop the run
of the Chiefs, then
I think that's where there's going to be challenges
for them. So I think the Chiefs
are going to have to be, Patrick
said it first and he is correct.
Patrick did not think he played well.
I think that's fair
if you're grading, if it's just like, hey,
watch this random Patrick Mahomes
game. First game off the ACL, that context
changes it. But as far as
where this ranks, as far as,
as how he played with no context attached,
he did not play well.
He'll be better.
For the Chiefs to, give me 45 seconds to us,
for the Chiefs to be a championship caliber team,
they're going to need another receiver.
I'm just saying they're going to have to add something there.
But we're not going to be a championship caliber team.
Talking about winning the division.
And I don't know that the Chiefs have to be 1% better
to win this division.
And I think they might be able to wrap this division up
quickly because I'm just to show you guys the next eight games for these two teams,
the Broncos and the Chargers.
And all we have is how they played in week one.
But I just want to, you guys can tell me how you, Chargers, the Raiders, they looked
okay, at Bill's, at Seahawks, home Broncos, at Chiefs, at Rams, home Texans, at Ravens.
Good luck.
Broncos, Jags, Rams, Niners, Chargers, Seahawks, Cardinals, the Light One, Chiefs, Panthers.
Is Arnold?
No, no.
So, that's fair.
So, exactly.
So those seven games from Bills to Ravens, your guy, Warren Sharp said KW, it's one of the toughest seven game stretches in NFL history.
And the Broncos schedule is super front-loaded as well.
I'm just telling you, there's a lot of scenarios where these two teams start the year.
One of them's three and six and one of them's four and five.
And so I think
It's very interesting.
You guys will schedule is
We have no idea who is actually good.
Like the Rams, like are the Rams now?
Like, I don't know, Rams are they?
Right.
Good team.
Walker outgained the entire Broncos team
while scoring two touchdowns,
but was it enough to earn himself a spot on Bruce Ballot?
Let's find out in the second edition of Bruce Ballot.
Wow.
So excited.
I'm going to say something.
about my ballad as a precursor.
I did take into consideration
who you played.
Okay. And I think
you guys and the viewing audience are all
going to be like, man, brew
is objective. Okay.
Because this is not going to, they're not going to be any
personal feelings, no
pom-poms in this. All right?
That's kind of like the theme of the whole show.
For all of us. But there's some, there's
pom-poms somewhere in this building.
Where? All right. I'm just saying. I'm just putting
it out there.
At number five, Jackson Darts.
What?
What?
Did you watch?
What?
He played a flawless game.
Three touchdown passes.
He played well.
Right?
He ran for 54 yards, second among quarterback, second most this weekend.
74% completions, 134 passer rating.
It's true.
In a big emotional situation, Harbaugh's first game.
We got the mighty Cowboys coming.
He was great.
All right.
Now I'm necessarily expected to continue.
He was great.
It was week one.
Number four, Nick, your boy.
At least.
You're going to, I'm telling you, I'm keeping it real.
You did it against the Browns.
All right, can we temper it just a tad?
Jackson and that's not the Browns with Miles Garrett.
Jackson Durgeon against the Cowboys.
All right.
That's why he's fifth.
Trevor's ahead of you.
But Trevor was great.
I don't want to take anything away from.
I mean, there was some phenomenal performance.
I'm very interested in this.
See, that's what I'm seeing.
At number three, you're going to like this one, Nick.
Kenneth Walker the third.
I think you are.
Yes.
Career high, 173 yards, 7 and a half yards.
He was phenomenal, had a receiving touchdown.
Did it against a great defense.
Did it against a great defense.
Yes, so he got third.
Good job.
At number two, Caleb Williams.
Now, this is very interesting.
Two pass in touchdown.
I'm very.
I'm very.
You left.
You're saying because it's Carolina?
No, we're saying about...
I think there's two guys for one spot.
I think there's three guys for one spot.
This is...
We're supposed to be saying, Brew, you're very objective.
Yeah, I'm shocked you're not saying that.
Because number one, it's Josh Allen.
334 yards passing against the...
Maybe the best defense in the league, we think.
He runs for two touchdowns, throws for two touchdowns.
I'm shocked.
Can I go?
I want to say something.
Wow.
Lamar is not on there.
Brock Purdy's not on there?
Yeah, I know.
Anybody else?
Objectively speaking, who am I missing?
Derek Henry had three touchdowns.
He was great.
He was better than Kenneth Walker.
No, he wasn't.
Kenneth Walker rushed for 170 yards.
Kenneth Walker was the absolute star of that game.
Henry was great, but so was Lamar.
Wow, Drew, wow, you are objective.
I told you.
I'm just keeping it real.
So here's what I learned in this.
So Brew has, they're adults now, but kids obviously with their twin girl daughters.
And so you never coached them in sports, correct?
No.
You never coached in sports.
Sometimes, but I now know what type of coach you would have been, which is the opposite.
Sometimes we were like, oh, it's Daddy Bowl.
Like his dad's the coach, he gets all the shots, he gets everything.
sometimes that goes the other direction
where if your dad's the coach
it's harder on you
you don't get as many opportunities, all of that
because my dad coached me. There you go.
And that's how your ballot works.
Lamar and Derek Henry are your guys. They're both out.
You get out room for Jackson Dart.
But that's what I...
But honestly, and I hear...
Derek Henry should be on there over Jackson Dart.
Derek was phenomenal.
He had 200 yards against the worst evens in the league last year.
He ran for 50s plus and threw for 230.
Three times.
Like, I get, Henry was great.
Lamar was great.
Lamar was great.
Lamar was great.
I really looked at it closely.
I thought Lamar would be on there, but go ahead.
I like what Jackson Dart did, but to be on Bru's Ballet.
Man, I'm shocked.
It's because I don't, what is one of my catchphrases?
It kind of feels like pom-poms, though.
It kind of feels like I don't wave the pom-poms for anybody.
But it kind of feels like you're waving the pom-poms.
My team is the racons.
But I'm saying for Jackson's.
But I'm saying for Jackson Dark because it's like you didn't expect him to do this and he did it on Sunday night.
You know what? That's right.
It's like a patronizing.
He did it on a national televised game.
I loved it.
I thought it was great.
I'm giving him love.
It'll probably be the last week.
It was a great game.
Exactly.
That's my point.
You figure, let me give it to Jackson Dark because he may not ever have a trade.
I looked at it closely.
I think he had the second highest pass a rating of the weekend.
He was great.
Who had the highest?
Yeah, boy.
Trevor, who was number four.
You think Trevor should be number one.
Well, it's a fair amount for that.
Mahomes now.
Next.
Jackson Dart.
I mean, I'm just saying.
He was great.
He was great.
Live from New York, it's a show that got new snow.
If you're a real fan of first things, first, you look around and I say, is that new snow?
It is.
It's puffy.
You know, we're rolling.
The budget a little bit, got new snow.
Wow.
Popcorn out there?
What's the popcorn from?
What are you talking?
I'm not sure.
But it was delicious.
Second hour, first things first.
Oh, wow.
You 80?
I feel like it's good teamwork.
Oh, yeah, right.
Today, week once done, which performance was just a mirage?
Remember that lady on the airplane?
They're like, that's not real.
We have a...
Remember it?
A 60...
Oh, that?
Remember that?
It's not real.
Like, which team is like that?
So you name a team and then you point back and say, that's not real.
That's the setup.
But you said you're not a viral video.
from eight years ago.
That was a big deal.
Remember, like, what's you talking about?
Meanwhile, Broncos were bad on offense and they're also bad on defense.
How much trouble is Denver in already?
And Jean-Pain just going to start calling plays.
But right now, let's start climbing.
Already, we've got people moving up and down the face of this icy Sierra.
It's like a slip and slide, but a winter version here.
Early falls and some quick climbs.
And one shocking debut, yes, that is Carson Wentz.
Let's find out where everyone lands
on this week's edition of Mahomes Mountain.
I'm so excited for this week's mountain.
Me too.
And one of my favorite things,
a happy accent that happens of working with Brew,
heaven's castle, at least once every two weeks,
if not more often, is there'll be a topic we do,
and Brew will go first,
and he'll say something.
and I'll kind of look to wild and point.
I was like, man, I was gonna say the exact same thing.
Happens often.
And like, no, there are certain sports things
we see very differently, but a lot of things we see it,
the same thing comes to mind.
That now has extended to our segment introductions,
because I was going to do, hand to God,
a whole thing about how, if there was ever any question
about impartiality or waving pom-poms, this,
This mountain will put all of that to bed.
Okay.
The committee obviously is a group project.
The mountain's all mine.
And there have been a lot of the Spursians cast because it's called Mahomes Mountain.
Does he get an unfair, you know, favorable grade?
Yeah.
Let this mountain be evidence of that.
But before we get to the top where Patrick Mahomes was, maybe still is,
folks who have fallen off for folks who are already injured, not climbing today at all,
Darnold, Kyler, and Tua are off with injuries, off because of their play.
Deshawn, Cooper, Rush, Preston to service, Malik Willis, and Cam Morton.
Just a word about Cam Ward.
Uh-oh.
Cam.
You know, I remember us kicking around either on or off the air about how, like, man,
Cam Ward's the least discussed number one overall pick ever.
Like, you know, it's kind of unfair.
Like, we talk about Shador, and then we don't pay any attention to Cam Ward and the Titans.
that train's come around to where
kind of lucky we don't pay any attention
for Camp Ward and the Titans
because
game into year two,
not seeing a whole lot of progress,
my friend.
I wish you luck.
I hope you do well.
Not looking great.
Zach Wilson got ripped a lot more.
Zach Wilson got ripped a lot more.
Jamarcus Russell's like,
it's lonely over here.
Seventh row of the mountain.
On the mountain.
Gino.
Gee, yes.
What do we say to brew?
I don't know.
G.
Yes, yeah.
I don't think that's what we say.
So far.
G.
Oh my.
Drew Locke played really well once he got his feet underneath them against a Patriots defense that should be good.
I don't know, but he played really well.
Here's my worry about Daniel Jones, Greg.
Doesn't seem to want to run on that Achilles.
One carry, four yards.
If Daniel Jones does not run the ball, he's not going to be affected.
That's a concern.
To your injury, Greg.
To your injury.
That's what kid.
One year to get back.
Not George Kittle, though.
George Kittles is a eight-month-dictory.
Yeah, George Kittle could play that next day.
All right, back to the mountain.
Bonix.
Play well next week, pal.
Malik Willis dying to get on the mountain
and trying to find a spot somebody's spot to take.
Aaron Rogers, listen, I personally,
again, I've never been an NFL quarterback,
but I personally wouldn't have spent the hours
leading up to my season discussing old relationships,
personal details, taking shots at Greg Jennings, whining about things from six years ago.
But maybe that's why I, you know, I'm not great.
I thought, you know, very lucky Cooper Rush didn't out duel you.
T.J. Watts saved you guys there.
Yeah.
We're going to count that as points for the Steelers offense.
Yeah.
Aaron Rogers stays where he is.
Kurt Cousins was fine.
Carson went's good for you.
Again, short fields.
You were pressed into service out of nowhere.
You guys got the win.
You're on the mountain.
Sixth row.
Moving up, 410 yards by Tyler Shuck.
Now, is that a canary in the coal mine that that lion's secondary
might be a total catastrophe possibly?
But his connection with Alive was good.
They missed the two-point conversion, still 400 yards, 400 yards.
Brew had it exactly right on Jacoby Percette.
Listen, turn on Jacoby Preset game.
About every other one, you're going to be like,
this guy should start somewhere.
Now, the other of the every other one,
he's just throwing laser beams to the opponent.
Like, it's just like perfect dots to the secondary,
but he looked really good.
He seriously outplayed Herbert, helped them win wire to wire.
Dropping down.
Jayneau.
Sorry, bro.
I guess you don't even care anymore.
It's really sorry, Greg.
My guy Bakeshaw, those fumbles is just awful.
And not just because they cost me so much in week one,
but it's just awful.
He just got paid and then he's playing reckless.
Don't love it.
Jayden's a tough one.
Started the game, I think.
six of 18 for like 60 yards, but then did rally late, but then also missed the two-point conversion.
I'm not spilling any more ink, as you would say, Brew on Justin Herbert.
It like the, whatever.
Fifth row.
Jared Gough, fine.
The, you know, he was fine.
Didn't need to move up, didn't need to move down.
He stays where he is.
Dak, not so fine.
He, it's not, listen, the interception for half was bad.
I thought Danny and, and KW or Brew.
made a good point yesterday that Cowboys in the second half only got the ball twice.
They scored touchdowns of both of them.
They just never, they couldn't get off the field, but it was a disappointing, I think it's
very fair to say disappointing opening week for Dak Prescott.
CJ Stroud, on the other hand, if there ever can be an encouraging performance that ends
with you fumbling the ball in the final possession to lose the game, that was it.
I mean, serious.
Like the Texans will just sign up for that CJ Stroud game every game this year.
The Nico Collins connection looked good.
He had two fumbles, didn't he?
He had two fumbles.
He had no picks through for a bunch of yards.
like I think they'll sign up for it.
Brew's guy Jackson Dart,
Danny's guy Jackson Dart.
Listen, he played a really good game.
That's why he moved up.
Makes sense.
KW's guy, Bryce Young.
He played a great game.
He did.
Played a great game that I'm actually going to talk more about later.
He moves up.
Now to the top 10.
Four throw.
Joe Burrow played fine and threw a pick six,
let the bucks back in it,
then steadied himself.
It stays where he is.
Jalen Hurts made the three big.
biggest plays of the game. They won the game. I felt like there's nobody on row five that
deserved, you know, to move up more than him. So he moves up. Drake May has to, had to drop KW.
Yeah. I mean, I think this is fair. You think this is fair, right? You're not mad at me?
I think this is more than fair. Okay. Well, it's a rich tapestry. Your history matters.
Silver medalist envy. That's a rich tapestry. We've got a little bit of last year.
Yeah. Not the playoffs. No, it was just based on this year, obviously he'd plummet.
We've got it. Yeah. But you get him a little more.
more benefit of the doubt.
And Brock Purdy.
You know what they've always said about Nick Wright and Brock Purdy?
Just calls balls and strikes.
Just calls him as he sees him.
It's totally fair.
I thought Brock Purdy was out.
I don't think he talked about enough.
I thought he was outstanding Thursday night.
This don't reveal row three yet.
Let me just tell you guys right now.
Not only is this far and away, the most star-studded row three ever.
This also has three of my favorite,
maybe my three favorite quarterback
in the league. Certainly three of the ones that I talk about the most. Reveal row three.
Moving up to row three, Caleb Williams, moving down from the top spot of the mountain.
Patrick Mahomes and moving down Matt Stafford. Caleb's obvious. He had maybe the best game of his
career. Patrick said it himself. He did not think he played that well. Patrick also does not want
to be graded on an ACL curve. So, you know, he does not, his performance, given how many great
quarterback performances we had in week one.
Doesn't deserve to stay at the top of the mountain.
I thought he steadied himself in the second half.
The one pick, Greg told him he was not on Patrick,
and I trust Greg because he was not on Patrick.
And so, but he's going to drop.
And I think he would, I think that's more than fair.
And Stafford was awful.
Like, now again, he gets the benefit of the doubt to he's not going to plummet,
like Drake May is not going to plummet, but he was bad.
Moving up to row two, perennial MVP candidates,
It's Lamar Jackson moves up.
Unlike Brew, I thought Lamar was outstanding.
I don't know what the guy's got to do to get on Brew's good side.
Josh Allen was awesome.
Almost lost the game, but didn't.
And then after almost losing the game,
had a hundred out of a hundred throw.
I don't know you're looking at you're saying,
well, then who's atop the mountain?
This is shocking.
Has this ever even happened?
No.
Thanks for asking Kevin Miles.
Had to get him up there.
Oh, yeah.
He had to get him up there.
college.
Like this is so, oh wow.
Guys, don't take away from this moment with the murmuring.
For the first time.
Oh, my gosh.
In the history of the mountain, the prophecy realized,
atop the NFL mountain, quarterback mountain for the first time ever,
the prince who was promised, Trevor Lawrence,
he is who the media wants Justin Herbert to be.
the super talented, amazing pedigree.
If he only could put it all together, guy, and he has.
Oh my.
All he did last year was rip off, what was it, 10 straight, dominant victories,
go to Denver, dogwalk them,
have two fourth quarter comebacks against the bills that he then lost,
and now started this year with a perfect game.
He was very good.
Atop the mountain, the prince.
What a day.
What a day.
We can't only afford him one.
We can't only afford him one.
Once a week.
He got hubs, the budget.
I mean, come on.
Greg.
If ever was a day for the trumpeters.
So I got to give Trevor some flowers.
Yeah.
Trevor's balled.
Like, he was bawling at the end of last season.
I said he's bald.
He has balled.
I'll let you in a little secret.
And we, we've got to.
week one despite whatever defense he was playing against, he performed.
I mean, some of those throws were, they were amazing.
And so I don't mind Trevor being at the top of the moment.
However, I'm not so gracious for my guy, Matthew Stafford.
Or maybe bruise guy or your guy, Matthew Stafford.
Coming off an MVP season with all the expectations.
and to perform the way that he did, it was disappointing.
And so I feel like Matthew Stafford should move down.
And you know what?
It hurts me to do this, but I got to drop him.
And Hertz should actually replace him because of what he was able to do.
And again, without A.J. Brown, understand what he did.
But this isn't about Jalen Hurts.
This is about Matthew Stafford.
Because when you come into the year with a star study,
roster and you are the quarterback. We never overlooked the quarterback. We
gauge and we grade that team based on what we believe the quarterback to be and
he has to be consistently good to great. Matthew Stafford when that game
started the pass rush of the 49ers completely rattled him to where
he didn't even look like he was comfortable being out there.
He wanted to get the ball out of his hands.
Only completed three passes beyond 10 yards.
Got some numbers for you.
Didn't seem like you wanted to get hit.
And I'm very careful because I don't want to say he was showing his age,
but he definitely didn't look like he was signing up to really take any type of hits unnecessarily.
But these numbers, like second worst, the passer rating, second worst by a reigning MVP.
And again, expectations.
Like, we have so many high expectations, not only for Matthew Stafford, but for this team.
And now that Miles Garrett is out, who are you going to be moving forward?
It can't be this.
Seven points, fewest in 85 games with obviously with the Rams at Stafford at quarterback.
Like, this was just a bad outing, and I would drop him even more just because this was a 49ers team that we didn't know a lot about, but we didn't expect him to look like that.
The two lowest passer ratings in week one by any quarterbacks on the mountain were the one and two in MVP last year.
Yeah.
Stafford at 61, Drake May at 55.
MVP hangover.
Listen, his week one performance deserves to have him dropped much further, much lower.
But I do, because it's so early in this year, what you did last year does play a larger factor than it will the rest of the year.
But you make a compelling case.
And if there's any of the great quarterbacks that would be least surprised if they have an awful year, it would be the oldest of them.
Sure.
You know what I mean?
Like that would just logically make sense.
So I get your point.
Go ahead, bro.
Look, we all have our individual franchises on the show.
And that person determines what that franchise is about.
But we still have our little perceptions.
Brews Ballet, you guys thought, he's a little bias.
He's going to throw a raven in there.
He's going to throw this and that, brother.
My view of Mahomes' mouth, now it's obviously your baby,
but I have my own little thoughts about it.
Yeah, where it takes advantage.
And I feel like.
I got to be honest.
I feel like there are only a handful of quarterbacks
who are worthy of being at the top of the mountain on any given time.
Lamar, Josh, obviously Mahomes, Staff.
Like, Drake, I think was last year,
but he was maybe about to win MVP.
With all due respect to Trevor, who was fantastic,
I don't feel like he's reached that because it's a rich tapestry,
which means we're taking everything in the,
not just what you did last week,
but everything in the consideration in your NFL career.
I'm not counting high school and all that stuff.
But I mean.
So I, I, Trevor was great.
And if you just wanted to say just based on last week,
these were the best quarterbacks.
Top five MVP last year.
Sure.
He brought some, they won 13 games.
But I would drop.
I think one of the other two guys, who is at there playing?
Oh, the Browns, okay.
One of the two guys below Trevor should be number one.
I'll let Wilde determine which one.
But I would actually move Caleb up to the second row.
Trevor on the row three.
Yes, Trevor on row three.
And we just, again, if we're using Bruce Bell as a snapshot of the season,
Trevor's en route to his third in the last five years.
top seven MVP finish.
His second straight, his second straight
top five MVP finish if you care
about those numbers. They're both primes.
Odds, who cares, five, seven.
I don't know why five so popular. No, he can't talk seven.
Because there's five on the ballot.
That's why. So be it.
But again, here are
Trevor's numbers this year
and where they rank in the league. This year.
Yeah, this year. The whole year.
Can we show them, please, does?
They, I mean, it.
Wait, this Cal, well, yeah.
This calendar?
Trevor and the
Trevor this season.
First in the league
and pass rating.
The most touchdowns
all the way down to third
in yards per pass.
KW loves a good
completion percentage.
This is 78.
It's a tapestry,
and by the way,
the Brown,
that was the biggest
margin of victory
of any team
in the league this season.
Can I throw in a bone?
We think the Browns
are the worst team
in the NFL.
Certainly if you walk outside
and say that,
you're not going to get any disagreement.
I think the Browns are going to finish bottom four in the NFL this year.
I don't think they're...
But that's a hotter take.
I don't know about that.
I think the...
We don't have to work...
Yeah, yeah, you've still used...
No, I mean, I think going...
I think the Titans, the Cardinals, the Dolphins, and Jets were all projected to be worse
than the Browns.
But so...
Cardinals should be. Go ahead, KW.
To the good people of Buffalo.
You can't do this.
You're doing the bills?
You're doing Josh Allen?
I'm the mayor of fair.
Everybody knows that.
Everybody does know that.
We hate Kevin Miles.
No, you don't.
You guys are just too nice.
I can tell.
It's just like you guys are nice folk.
And I like Resilda.
I'm beloved in Buffalo.
You like Zelda?
Grazeld.
The rap group from Buffalo.
They're excellent.
Rick James from Buffalo.
Is he really?
I did not know that.
So here's the thing.
If I say something, you've been bad,
and I expect you to be bad,
and it turns out you're fantastic.
Got to give you some credit.
So Josh Allen was terrible the first two games or his last two games against the Texans,
boom, turns around and is actually excellent.
It has a game that doesn't look anything like the last two games, fantastic.
Here's the other thing.
DJ Moore, like, sure, he's number one.
Like, is he, though?
Out of all the number ones, he's not A.J. Brown.
Josh Allen made him better than A.J. Brown.
Not Jalen Waddle.
Jalen Waddle had two yards in his debut.
Stefan Diggs did catch a touchdown and then immediately got penalized.
Mike Evans, shout out to Mike Evans,
who actually played great, but the yards weren't there.
So five catches for 100 yards in a TD
against a fantastic defense.
Got to give you credit. And you have to be the
quarterback, you're running around, you're throwing the
ball, you're also de facto
the leader of the team, not
just amongst the players, amongst
the executives. I'm like, by the way, I picked
the coach, and I just want to say,
hey, coach, here's the game ball,
and why don't you take off your shirt? The coach is like,
it's not about me. We know, it's about Josh Allen,
it's this thing. So, good leadership,
Great game, got everybody involved.
He deserves to be the top of the mound.
Yeah, and if not for Trevor playing a perfect game, he would have been.
You know what the Browns and the Texans are not the same?
Almost throw a game losing pick.
You know why?
Because he was sitting on the bench with a baseball cap on the fourth quarter because he had won it early.
Trevor was great, but he's not Josh Allen.
They just played each other in a playoff game and went toe to toe.
And what happened?
I mean, Josh's team got the ball last.
Well, why did they get the ball?
Trevor threw a pick.
I had a lot.
I don't think Josh actually ran the play, did he?
I don't think he got the ball last.
I think the game was over.
That's not true.
Start Saturday strong on Fox.
This week, the crew is headed across the pond.
Special Big Noon kickoff, 10 a.m. Eastern live from Wembley and London for the Union Jack Classic.
Then Ohio State, host Kent State at the Horshoot for Big Noon Saturday only on Fox.
Welcome back to the show.
We are debating whether or not we're doing the watch party on Thursday.
There's not really a debate.
We all were doing it, but you've now canceled, so now we're deciding what to be able to make it.
Patrick Mahomes was averaging less than 15 points in his last three games against the Broncos.
His offense put up 31 last night.
Started slow, then heat it up.
Here's Patrick Mahomes on if he felt like himself.
Take a listen.
I feel like I was moving around fast.
I think I was a little quick with my reads.
I think there were some people that if I would have just got to the second and third read, they were open,
especially earlier in the game.
I tried to force a few things early, and then I had a few overstrides, which, I mean, it's kind of part of it,
but I got to get back to being balanced where I can make those throws.
And when I overstriot, it goes a little bit lower, so you can see that sound throughout the game.
Here's how Mahomes started two for 12.
Did run one in, so that was cool.
And it was 13 for 15, pass-for-winning, shot up to 1-25, threw the ball the wrong team once.
But, Greg, that wasn't his fault?
No, that wasn't his fault.
Middle read, middle read for Xavier Worthy.
Got to run through the safety.
Patrick Mahomes, he knew that.
All he has to do is run through the safety
because he has an end cutter coming in behind him.
He didn't do it.
So Patrick Mahomes was thinking he was going to run through
the middle safety.
I saw it and I was like, man, a terrible play by Patrick
and Greg was sitting next.
He was like, no, it wasn't his fault.
I'm like, okay.
You seriously was like, what is he?
I was like, what just happened?
I was like, no, I saw it.
It was, yeah, because it was such.
You could see it was some type of.
But on the original play, I couldn't see, I'll be honest.
Even on replay, I didn't know what the receiver is supposed to do.
But like, certainly on the live play, it just looked like a, I thought it was just an awful overthrow.
And then you see the replay and you see it was a miscommunication.
And then Greg explained, that's probably on the receiver.
What do you think Mahomes prove?
What did Mahomes prove last night?
Honestly, he will do whatever it takes to win.
I don't think there's a quarterback that would truly actually say it and his play doesn't have to be as high as we expected to be,
and he would be like this, and he would be satisfied.
I get it coming off of injury, but Mahomes, if he had to turn around and hand the ball off 50 times last night in order for them to win, he would sign up to do it.
And that's just a sign of a great leader and being willing to do whatever it takes.
He understands his presence is felt just by being out there.
He talked about him being quick with his reads.
I thought when you watched him play, you kind of knew he was going to get the ball out of his hands.
Like I didn't believe he was going to run, especially trying to run.
That was shocking.
And run through contact to score the speed option.
And we immediately when I saw it, what are they doing?
And he looked like, sign me up.
Okay, you want me to run this?
I'll run it.
It's very rare.
The expectations are high for this team.
And it's because of him.
It's because of what we believe he can turn into and what he will get back to.
But if all he is asked to do, which is something he's never been able to do,
where all last year, the year before, the last three years, it's been,
if Mahomes isn't great, this team has no chance.
chance. Or if Mahomes isn't great years when they were okay and the offense was struggling,
defense was really good. Now you say defense is getting better. Can they be good? We don't know.
They're ahead of schedule. They can have good offensive games that Patrick doesn't play well.
That's never happened. They've been able to win without Patrick playing well because of the defense.
They've never been able to have good offensive games without Patrick.
And this is, and last thing I'll highlight this too, the offensive level,
line, they're going to be better because they're asked to showcase a version of themselves
that they haven't been able to do the last few years.
They haven't been a running team first.
They've been in pass set all the time.
Now you're asking Trey Smith, who loves Creed Humphrey, who loves to get physical and nasty,
to do that because you got a guy in the backfield that can run all day long.
It just showed that Patrick Mahomes, he'll sign up, whatever you're asking him to do.
going to be willing to do it with a smile on his face and he's going to make the best of it.
He showed us what his superpower is and he's got a lot of obviously he's you know great off
schedule great arm you know clutch all that stuff but his superpower and it's the same one the
guy before him Tom Brady had he's mentally superior to all the other quarterbacks for him to
run that ball.
And at the end of that
touched both touchdowns,
the one that was called back,
the one that he scored on.
That was,
he put himself right there
in the midst of danger
at the goal line.
It could have,
it could have,
he could have went through the whole injury again
and been out another year
and had to rehab and all that.
For him to do that,
that is just mental superiority.
And I'm going to compare him
to another goat
in another sport, Muhammad Ali.
Muhammad Ali,
because I was young enough,
I'm old enough to have watched
like a lot of his career,
the second half of his career.
He had a lot of fights where he didn't look great,
where there was questions,
did he really win that fight, title defenses?
You know, or the other guy was stronger
and Ali, his willpower.
Ali won a lot of fights with heart,
with tough.
with the best chin probably in the history of boxing,
with willpower and just savvy and guile.
And that is what we joked last week or two ago, Nick,
when you were joking, you said Mahomes is what post stats?
But it's kind of true as I thought about it.
It's getting to the point and I've been harping on.
I want to see the old stats, the first few years of his career.
but he still is clearly the best quarterback in the league, regardless of his stats.
He wins with willpower, with guile, with toughness, with heart.
And you can imagine, Greg, what that did to his teammates.
They already obviously have the utmost respect for him.
But to see him put himself in harm's way like that coming off that injury right away,
that has to motivate God.
So it's just the all-time grades have something like that.
He's got it.
And listen, I didn't, week one last year when they lost, my two big takeaways that were
concerning.
One was, we can't get them off the field on third down.
Those are a problem all year.
The other one was Patrick's running too much.
And like that I said, one of the reasons Patrick is a historically great playoff riser as far
as his numbers, the team success, all of it is because he presses the quarterback scrambles.
button in the playoffs way more in the regular season. He historically has always kind of had it,
didn't have to press that button, and then it adds another dimension. Last year, and then,
you know, one game into this year, it looks like, oh, because the receivers aren't getting
open, he has to press it more often. That is not necessarily great for what it says about the
Chief's offense right now ability to create first downs without him going to that. But it says so much
about the competitor that he is.
And I think that
for the most discussed quarterback
of his era, the two things
about him that have been underrated
is his ability
to recover from injury where he had
dislocated kneecap and missed two games.
He suffered a high ankle sprain
and missed one series in the playoffs.
And now he had tore his ACL,
he missed three games.
Patrick Mahomes,
He missed three games with a torn ACL.
I understand part of that's the time of the year it happened,
but it's still, he missed zero training camp reps after tearing his ACL in December.
So that's like injury recovery toughness part.
But the competitor piece of it, when I say he's post-stats,
some of that's tongue-in-cheek in that, like he's, he has one of,
if not the greatest statistical season any quarterbacks ever had.
He has a couple MVPs.
He has all that.
but it's also a little insight into how I know he views it,
which is not that he doesn't want,
he wants to win MVP's.
He wants to be recognized again as the best statistical quarterback in the league.
But that is so far down the list of priorities too,
he wants the chiefs to be dominant again.
And so I think that,
I don't think there was anyone in the building yesterday
happier about what Kenneth Walker did than Patrick.
because of what he knows it means for their ability to compete at a high level.
What about Tom Cruise?
You know, that was an odd one.
Tom Cruise loves Kenneth Walker.
He's huge Kenneth Walker.
I didn't know that.
Just so you know, the producers tried to get me to do a Mission Impossible related.
Oh, yeah.
I decided against it.
Okay.
Broncos did not look ready to play.
The offense was outgamed by Kenneth Walker.
The defense allowed over 250 yards in missed tackles.
Bo Nix was also pressured at the second highest rate of
his career. Greg, we'll start with you. Were you more surprised by the Broncos
offense struggling or the Broncos defense struggling? Their defense. It's similar
to the Texans. The reason why this team was tremendously successful last
season was because their defense just they didn't do what we saw last night. They
tackled and they didn't allow you to run the football. They were second in
allowing rush rush yards allowed last year and first week of the season you give up
over 200 yards rushing on the ground.
You can't do that.
And I don't want to, like, I pick the Broncos to win,
but I hear all this, you know, training camp reps, reps,
we need more training, we need to play more and tackle and do.
The Kansas City Chiefs didn't play a lot of their starters either.
In the preseason.
And so there are a lot, this is kind of the wave.
Either you're going to play or you're going to prepare like you are a pro.
and it just appears that they weren't ready to play
because they didn't prepare like they were pros.
Period.
You can feel however you want to feel about it,
but you knew your opponent was going to run the football
because the quarterback was going to be limited.
At least that was the thought.
And they came out and disrespectfully
kept punching you in the mouth.
And you didn't do anything about it.
And if you did, the adjustments that you made,
they just weren't good enough.
It was disappointing because if this is with understanding that they're,
they no longer have John Franklin Myers.
You've mentioned this a couple times.
And obviously Jonathan Cooper at the line.
If this is who you're going to be, this offense is not good.
It's not good enough.
Like I don't have high expectations for this offense.
but this defense, we all have high expectations for this defense.
And here's the sneaky fact about the Broncos.
They are an old team.
They have a young quarterback, but they're an old expensive team that is like, I'm not saying
they're all in because they have a quarterback in year three.
But they aren't, it's not a, it's not the Patriots.
It's not a, you know what I mean?
It's not a precocious group of young guys that are going to grow together.
It is a team that has a lot of veterans, and they went out.
and got Waddled this year, not as a final piece, but final piece-ish.
And then you go, Bru, the Broncos defense, what it was last year to what the Chiefs did yesterday,
if we can put it side-by-side dust, it is stunning.
Like, I'm not shocked that Bow-Nicks looked like how Bo Nix looked all of last year until they were trailing.
I guess the only surprise is he wasn't able to turn it around.
But Bo Nix struggled for huge portions of last year.
That's not all that surprising.
The Broncos defense after, okay, so this is the Bow Nix graphic.
This part doesn't shock me that much because he just wasn't able to do the bottom piece.
But Dust, if we have the Broncos defense graphic,
Broncos defense last year was 18 points again.
Chiefs with a limited quarterback 31, more than 100 yards,
more than a yard and a half per play more, half the sacks,
less pressures with an undrafted free agent playing left tackle.
Now, part of that brew is pass rush couldn't get going because they're running the ball.
That keeps them off balance.
But I agree with Greg.
If the Broncos don't have a top eight defense, they have no shot.
And I picked them to go to the playoffs.
I expect them to be a good team this year.
But they have to have one of the best 25 percentile defenses in football.
All right.
We're going to leave it there.
Which week one result was a Marathon?
garage where like Nick was saying, remember that lady on the plane?
She's like, that's not real. You were saying. That's what we're going to do about.
Which team is she pointing at? That's not real. She said you're not real.
She said you're not.
Got kicked out of the plane kicked off the plane. Yeah.
Sunday NFL on Fox double header. You got the Eagles taken on the Titans then.
America's game of the week. Both of these teams need to get into the wind column.
Commanders taking on the Cowboys. We're also Seahawks against the Frisky Cardinals.
interested in that one too. Sunday on Fox. Football maxing time. Sponsored by
Caesar's Sportsbook. A ton of new maxed improvements, okay? Better design flexed
parles. No, Greg, not like that flexing. Greg's flexing. More rewards, also making
upgrades, offenses. First week of games, average a combined 49 points. It's the highest
scoring week one since the merger. Last year, Raiders, Cardinals, Bucks, Bengals,
commanders and Colts all won their first game and all missed the playoffs
while the Super Bowl featured two teams who lost their first game.
So which result this weekend was the biggest mirage or like that lady in the plane?
Just stop with that.
It sounds like you guys, it sounds like you guys or you might think.
Another word.
I don't think the, my answer is not the Cardinals.
I want to say something about them real quick.
I don't think the Cardinals all of a sudden are good.
I think that people are still
just anchored to the fact
well the Chargers have to be good.
There's no reason the Chargers have to be good.
Chargers might just be bad.
They might just be bad.
And so that was a bad team,
playing another bad team, and one bad team won.
But my big...
You think that's what it was for real?
I don't expect the Chargers to be above 500.
So I, you know, I think at the end of the year,
the Cardinals win five games or the Chargers win seven.
So, like, I'm not that, like,
I'm not that taken aback.
by what I saw there.
I sadly have to say,
I think the biggest mirage was
the Panthers' offense
and Bryce Young turning a corner.
I think that is more
the bear's defense might be
for the time being a five alarm fire.
Bryce in that game,
361 yards, second most of his career.
Three touchdown passes, tied for the most.
A one-ten passer rating, fifth best of his career.
They scored 37 points
second most of any start of his career.
Listen, I actually, sometimes we say this and we don't actually mean it.
I do mean it.
I would love to be wrong about Bryce Young.
Everybody talks about what a nice person he is.
Like, it's not his fault that he's undersized.
He's really put the work in.
I don't, it's hard for me to believe.
So I think that's the mirage.
I think that is maybe a bigger, uh-oh, about the Bears defense.
They're going to have to be one of the highest scoring teams of all time to get to where they want to be.
so for me it's Bryce Young and the Panthers offense.
For me, it is actually the other team you were just gripping the Chargers.
Oh, the Chargers.
Look, they do have a tough schedule.
So maybe this is just going to be a terrible season for them.
But I have a hard time.
I have a ton of respect for Harbaugh as a coach, a head coach.
It's hard for me.
I know his last couple years at San Francisco.
They went downhill.
But I would imagine that he's going to get this thing together.
Mike McDaniel, his head coaching in Miami didn't go great.
But as an offensive mind, like that can't be, that can't be what we're going to see when you have one of the more talented quarterbacks,
not one of the most productive quarterbacks, but one of the more talented quarterbacks in the league in Herbert,
who has shown us that he's capable of having big statistical seasons, a great offensive mind,
enough talent.
I think they got good talent around them.
The offensive line should be better.
Like, I think this was really a horrible debut,
but I believe that the Chargers are going to be much better than what they showed on Sunday.
My biggest mirage was the Texans defense.
Like, you talk about a horrible debut.
That was a horrible debut.
And the numbers suggested.
You kind of did this similar with the different Broncos.
But like everything is doubled down.
Like in 2025, obviously 17.4, you double that, give up 36 on Sunday, yards per game.
You don't get the sacks you're getting.
Like everything was about this defense from getting after the quarterback, not defending the pass.
It just all broke down.
And Kamari Lasseter, he's going to look in the mirror and say, guys, I'll take a lot of blame on this win.
And it wasn't just him.
I'm isolating him because I'm.
I know.
He could have saved.
But the one play.
Absolutely.
And he got attacked this game.
And he made some good plays.
But this defense from the front seven to the back end, they are just solid.
And to see them give up that in week one, knowing who their head coach is,
they will be buttoned up on that defensive side of the ball.
They started off the season losing three in a row.
They were three and five at their buy.
Then they ripped off 10 in a row before they.
lost in the playoffs.
So I assume the Texans are going to be good.
But it did hurt my bills
or missing the playoffs prediction.
Right away.
Texans bangles next weeks.
That's a good challenge.
Yeah, it is.
Live from New York,
it's first thing's first overtime.
He's just laughing at his own jokes.
Wilde just did a three-minute routine
about his AMC Stubbs membership.
And now he's in tears laughing at a lot.
And none of us were laughing.
I just like the hottest thing in the world.
They might be good sponsors.
Let's not, let's just.
I like, I am an AMC Stubbs member.
Heartbreak feels good in a place like this.
KW.
Sorry, today the chief proved they're officially back.
Meanwhile, the Eagles scored three touchdowns,
also only had 10 first down.
Can they keep winning like this?
We discussed.
And finally, first time we've ever asked that question
I know.
The answer is yes, okay?
He goes to Super 1.
The answer is yes.
What is he does?
He doesn't lose the game.
It's Tuesday, which, of course, means time for top 10.
It's not time right now.
Can't be worse than last week.
I thought last week was strong for top of the week.
The entire, well, here's how I know last week wasn't good.
It's been one game.
It's a half new one top 10.
And you've had to reorder the whole thing.
That's not working.
That's how we threw it out.
That's not how you wanted it to work.
You hoped that that top 10 would,
last the whole year.
Can I ask you? Unchained.
No, I wanted the bears to move up and again.
Can I ask a question about Top 10 Tuesday?
Mr. Wilds.
Are there any teams on Top 10 Tuesday that are 0 and 1?
Yes.
Wow.
What a Top 10 Tuesday we're going to have.
Yeah, absolutely.
Can't wait for this.
I'm glad.
He's still laughing his own joke.
Head back to Kansas City where Bo Nix threw an early interception,
and then it got worse.
That's Walker out game the entire team
That was on fourth and one
Monmes had lots of touch out
I'm just kidding
Go ahead
representation of what I was saying
You wanted them to punt
Bo Nicks dropped the ball out of bounds
Almost had a turnover
But somebody stepped out with Jerry Snead
Here's Patrick Mahomes
Physically I think that's the moment
I still got to keep working to get
I want to get some of these passes down the field
a little bit more
I think that that'll help me out mentally
and kind of getting back in the rhythm of things
But that was definitely the moment
physically to kind of say that all this works paid off.
I didn't feel anything.
And so it's still a process.
I've got to still keep getting better and better and stay on top of it.
But this is obviously a great first week.
Danny, do you regret doubting Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs?
Remember, you did radio for a long time in Kansas City.
You took us to all those different restaurants.
You're like, don't worry, guys.
I don't need a reservation.
You walked in.
The next thing you know, you're rooting against one of your hometown teams.
Well, not rooting against, per se.
I had my doubt.
I was reading for myself to be correct.
I was reading for myself to be correct.
Which means you were rooting against them.
Well, listen, everyone in Kansas City who knows me for real knows that I love Kansas City and I love the Chiefs.
And for the record, I never doubted Mahomes.
I doubted the team.
I did a whole thing on the 10 biggest questions facing the Chiefs and Mahomes was not on the 10 questions.
I said that Mahomes, we would have forgotten about Mahomes's knee injury by the second quarter.
And I was wrong because it was the second drive.
I have not doubted Mahomes.
I doubted starting a undrafted rookie left tackle against a Broncos pass rush that had 68 sacks last year.
And Khalil Benson allowed zero pressures.
It was great.
I did not see that one coming.
I will be honest with you.
I did not have Legerius Sneed looking like four years ago, LeGeriast need, and playing in 90% of the Jerry's Sneed would look like he's always looked like he's always looked when he's wearing a Chiefs uniform.
I guess that's kind of silly.
That's exactly how he looked last time we wore a Chiefs uniform.
Yeah, you're right.
I didn't think the laundry had the majority of the things to do with it.
I thought it was the injuries.
I don't know what has happened, but it was like a fountain of youth when he went back to the city of fountains in Kansas City.
So I had that part wrong.
I don't agree with you.
I don't think that this is like a referendum on the entire AFC West.
Like, I don't.
Sean Payton has a losing record as the head coach of the Broncos in September.
He's 28 and 12 every other month.
That's interesting.
I think the Broncos are going to be fine.
I don't think that Jim Harbaugh forgot how to coach.
It was a really bad week one in Mike McDaniel's system.
They won 11 games last year in a terrible set of circumstances.
I think that they can win some games in that terrible gauntlet of a schedule that the Chargers have coming up.
So I do not have the AFC West being wrapped up by Halloween.
Oh.
Like my buddy Nick over here.
So, like, this was not a good start for my predictions for this division.
But I would also say that game was a lot about Denver being bad.
Yes.
That was a, and I do not believe that this was like totally forced by Kansas City into them being bad.
Like I don't.
No, that's fine.
The 28 missed tackles is just darn near unheard of.
And that was a big part of the game.
And actually like actually unheard of.
248 yards after mistackles is the most since we've been keeping the data.
Like that is just such a crazy outlier event that happened.
And Bo Nix had three fumbles.
He lost one.
He threw in it.
They couldn't hold onto the ball.
They couldn't tackle.
So I thought a lot of that game was about Denver playing an F game, more than me being overwhelmed by how incredible the chiefs looked.
That all made a lot of sense.
Codron analysis, a lot of good points.
Here we go.
I missed the answer.
Do you regret picking the chiefs to miss the playoffs?
No.
So right now you still think they're going to miss the playoffs?
Sure.
That was sure.
Yeah, yeah.
That's sure.
That was not 10 toes down.
Not 10 toes down, of course you're staggered off your feet when in week one, the team you picked to win the division loses to a team with expected to win four games in the Arizona Cardinals, a team that I had not in the playoffs in Denver, right?
No, no, I did have them as a wild card team.
They lose, like obviously even in your expanded playoff field.
I only expand the NFC.
Listen, look, it was a bad week one for my AFC West picks.
Yeah, I mean, it was, yeah.
Or you could just trust that the team with clearly and unquestionably
the best quarterback in the division and clearly and unquestionably the best coach in the division
and now clearly and unquestionably the best running back in the division,
we'll see about Ashton Genty, you know, maybe not.
But of the division contenders, if you will, and the team that actually has
consistently won the division would do that.
And I tried to say as many times as I could this offseason that the chiefs made
intentional choices about rebuilding their defense.
Last year, that defense had good points per game stats because they played such a
ball control style that there were fewer possessions.
per game. So their points per possession allowed was actually below average, but the overall
points per game allowed made it look good. Nobody watched the Chiefs last year and thought they
had an excellent pass defense. Nobody. They didn't have a pass rush. And Trent McDuffey was insistent
on, in my opinion, playing out of position. I understand why he wanted to be paid like an outside
corner. He got paid like an outside corner, so he wasn't at his best. And Jalen Watson, who was, went
from, oh my God, look at the seventh round pick
and what he's become to a $17 million a year
player and the Rams will see how that age is.
The Chiefs needed to.
The only retool their defense.
They poured all these resources into doing that.
After years of disreton, I shouldn't say disregarding
because they spent a first round pick
on running back five years ago,
but since then they've disregarded the running back position.
They went out in the first day of free agency
and got the most expensive,
big ticket running back available
they had a very intentional offseason
and it was all knowing, as we were saying,
that they were going to have Patrick back.
And so now we're in a position
where the Chargers in week one look,
they had arguably of the 32 teams in the league,
they were the 30th best in week one, arguably.
Denver in week one, we're saying
we're not even giving credit to the Chiefs in full credit
because it's like, man, nobody,
couldn't make a team play that poorly.
They just had, like, that's how bad they were.
And it's with a team whose quarterback, I know you don't trust.
I don't.
I know.
So we don't trust the quarterback.
The defense, having lost two key contributors, look nothing like itself.
Their big offseason acquisition, Jalen Waddle, like, could you imagine if Kenneth Walker this
game had three carries for zero yards?
Because that's Jalen Waddle yesterday.
Like, I, it is, the team that has given you, Brew, not.
Nothing but reasons to believe in.
Had a bad two months last year
and now is back to giving you nothing
but reasons to believe in. I still don't want to believe
in them. I just think it's crazy. I just
think it's outright crazy. And that's
before we even mentioned, the schedules
that the Broncos and the Chargers
have coming down the pike.
Yeah. I mean, those schedules are.
That's why I said, I think, by Halloween, this
thing could be looking tough.
Because the chief schedule is backloaded
and these teams, they are
both staring at potential three and five
stars. I just think both of those teams are good.
So I think that all those teams have
them on the schedule and they are going to
win some of those games. I think where
where I tend to agree
with you, I think the Chargers
and Broncos were
far more disappointing
than the Chiefs were impressive.
And the Chiefs were impressive.
But
the Char, like what scares, I mean, I still
I had the Chiefs in the playoffs, but
what scares me even about the division is
just, man, the Chargers and Broncos just didn't look that good.
And maybe they aren't going to be that good.
I think they will.
I'm not losing faith in them after one game.
But it has to be on the table that, because as we've talked about,
defenses do fluctuate year to year.
Bow Nix, that offense wasn't great last year except down the stretch of games, you know,
when he'd come alive.
But, you know, and then the Chargers, I got faith in Harbaugh for sure.
and McDaniel and Herbert,
but the Chiefs, that was stunning last night
on all, like their defense, their run game,
and the one thing that I didn't think was good,
we know it's going to get better, and that's Mahom.
And I thought, and if we can just real quick,
before you, top 10 Tuesday,
show Mahomes, you know, beginning to,
you know, first half, second half, essentially,
this isn't right at the halftime line.
He got better within the game.
He did.
He started the game 2 of 12,
and he finished the game 13 of 15.
Like, he was clearly very,
very rusty and bad early.
And then late in the game, to be clear,
I don't think he was great late.
He didn't think he was great late.
You don't have to show the graphic Christina.
I know where he had to get the top 10.
But he was 13 and 15, two touchdowns,
the one pick that Greg said was on worthy,
but call it on Patrick, whatever.
Like, he's only going to get better,
and he's going to have time.
They get the cults, then they get the dolphins,
then they get the Raiders, then they get a buy.
And I just think they are very, very dangerous once again.
It's Tuesday, which means this.
This time for our second installment of Top 10 Tuesday.
A little preview.
I've heard there's a lot of movement on this episode of Top 10 Tuesday.
Of course, first impressions matter.
There's going to be fluctuation.
Once we get more data on these teams, it's going to be harder to move around because there will be more of a sample size.
But yeah, a lot of shakeups here in Top 10 Tuesday.
And Nick says I don't give the Chiefs any respect.
Welcome to Top 10 Tuesday.
Oh, that's nice.
Kansas City Chiefs.
A fringe participant.
in top 10th season.
But behind the Chargers and Broncos, I assume.
Well, no.
Well, don't spoil top 10.
Let's not spoil anything.
Are they still?
Well, you just told us.
We don't know that.
No, no, no, no, no, I did not.
No, I did not.
As of today, actually, I'll spoil it for you.
The Chiefs are the only AFC West participant in Top 10 Tuesday.
As of today, they should be.
How is that?
Okay, no, it's fine.
I'm curious.
Is that not intellectually consistent?
One loss of the Cardinals, one loss of the Chiefs,
the others of the Raiders.
I feel like the Chiefs should be the Chiefs.
should be the top. Well, yeah, I agree.
I don't think it will be at the end of the year, but today, that's where the chiefs sit.
Another new team enters Top 10 Tuesday, the Philadelphia Eagles.
I wasn't that impressed with what you did against Washington, but I am looking for teams who have carried over things that they were exceptional at the year before.
And last year, they were a great defense, and they made Washington really struggle.
If we show what Philly's defense has done the last 13 games, including the playoffs, they're giving up 17.
points per game. It is 13 straight
games where they've allowed 24 or fewer
points. I want to say congratulations, though,
to the Philadelphia Eagles. That streak will end
before 15 games because they play the
Bears in two weeks on Monday night
football. Coming in at number eight,
Knicks, Jacksonville, Jaguars.
America's. Well, another trend.
A local team.
I will be fair.
I was very skeptical on whether
or not Liam Cohen had fully unlocked
Trevor Lawrence or if we were a part of the
roller coaster. And it was just the Cleveland Browns.
But again, trends from the second half of last year that carried over through week one this year,
Trevor Lawrence last nine regular season games.
It's pretty good.
Good graphic.
I will fully admit.
Again, that's a great graphic and I should have used it on the mountain.
And I wanted to, I told you before the year.
I was like, I want to see if what I was skeptical of last year is going to be true at the beginning of this year.
And I ask you a question.
Just real quick.
What Justin Herbert points you want to make?
Thank you.
Is it possible?
that Trevor Lawrence is who you think Justin Herbert is.
Is it possible?
Coming in at number seven, the Cincinnati Bengals,
they're moving up a spot.
They were, I believe they were eight last year on top 10 Tuesday.
Four takeaways was very good against the Bucks team that I had winning the NFC South.
Impressive, best thing about the Bengals in that spot,
Jamar Chase, it was 12 receiving yards.
So, like, their best player was not that productive,
and they still scored 33 points in that game.
Coming in number six, the Los Angeles Rams.
I have a rule on top 10 Tuesday.
I am not going to completely overreact to week one,
especially when that game is in Australia.
Like, I just think that was a weird game and a weird.
I had him at number two.
I'm dropping them to six.
If before the year we were asking if they could go 17 and O,
after one loss to a team that won 12 games a year ago,
15 hours away, the lowest I'm put in the Rams right now.
They have terrible news for you.
Yeah?
Do you happen to follow any of the news about Miles Garrett?
Yeah, that's not great.
That's not great.
We'll save that.
Let's see what happens when they play the Giants this week.
There's a chance that out of top 10 Tuesday entirely this time next week when the Giants pull off that upset.
Coming in at number five.
The Chicago Bears.
I was debating a lot of things on how to make the case for the Chicago Bears.
Does defense matter?
It's a great question.
I was considering just putting up a big old 59.
for the number of points.
But I decided to give you all of the things
that they led the NFL in in week one.
Troy, points, yards, rushing yards, rushing touchdowns,
rushing differential, rushing attempts,
scoring drives, third downs, total touchdowns,
yards per carry, red zone percentage, 20 yard plays,
long rush, points per drive, first half points,
and red zone touchdowns.
It's pretty good.
Also games making Bryce Young look like a franchise quarterback.
Well, set the NFL record.
Hey, if you score 59 points, you and I could be cornerback.
It wouldn't matter.
59's gonna be pretty good.
Coming in at number four, top 10, Tuesday, the San Francisco 49ers.
12 win team last year, third most injured team last year,
go to Australia, beat the Rams, thoroughly beat the Rams.
Yes, have a few injuries in that game because they always have a few injuries,
but their star players are healthy.
We should respect the Rams for what they did in week one until the injuries come in.
Coming in at number three, Bruce Baltimore Ravens.
Unbelievable debut from Declan Doyle.
I thought Zay Flowers' best game of his career.
Lamar looked like Lamar.
Derek Henry looked like Derek Henry.
The loss of Linderbaum did not come out.
The likely loss did not come out.
The defense was disruptive.
Both sides of the ball, I was thoroughly impressed with the Ravens.
And their upcoming schedule, Saints, Cowboys, Titans, Falcons, Browns.
Ravens could be sitting at 6'0 pretty easily.
May I ask you a quick question?
Sure.
Because you, and I'm not being a smart look here.
at both sides of the ball.
Yeah.
You were impressive because I thought the Ravens' offense looked amazing.
Yeah.
I act.
Brew was doing a misdirection bit about the Ravens getting run on,
but it was actually accurate.
Like you weren't at all worried about the Ravens.
Like we keep hearing about Matabouquet, but he's still not back.
Like at all worried about how their defense looked against a very limited Daniel Jones.
See, I don't think the Colts offense is going to be limited this year.
I think the Colts offense was excellent at the start of last year.
I think the Colts offense can be a top 10 offense.
this year. So relatively speaking, given how fast their offense was scoring, I actually think that,
and I loved what Baltimore did, I'll be it in the preseason. Fair enough. Defensively.
Coming in number two, the Buffalo Bills. You score 36 points on the Texans defense, and I know
defenses fluctuate year to year. I'm pretty sure DeNeil Hunter and Will Anderson are good.
I'm pretty sure Lasseter and Stingley are good. Doing that against that talent is impressive.
It doesn't happen. It doesn't happen to D'Amico Ryan's. It was arguably the best
offensive game any team has ever had against the Domingo Ryan's defense. It was incredible
Coming to number one.
Totally. Totally agree here.
I mean, it's mostly about beating the Patriots and about being 18 and three in their last 21 games with the best point differential in the NFL.
They're the champs. They're at number one until someone unseats them.
Brew, as always.
That also happens to be your Super Bowl pick.
Yeah. Those are my top two teams that I think will be in the Super Bowl this year.
Perfect list as always, Brew?
No.
Okay.
Here's what baffles me, Danny.
Baffles.
The Houston, Texas, were they in their?
last week?
They were not.
Oh, they were.
Okay.
But still, they lost to your, you got the bills winning the Super Bowl.
Is that correct?
That is correct.
They lost to the bills.
They dropped interception away from beating the bills.
They would have been in if they did.
And they, but I'm just saying, you know that's kind of a, that's kind of a, that's
kind of a, they score 31 points.
Yeah, they probably, I believe you would have put them in, like with all those other
new teams.
It would have been tougher.
But I do think Houston should be in there.
CJ Stroud, now, again, obviously two fumbles, the game losing fumble.
But through it pretty well, 107 passer rating, you know, a couple touchdowns, a bunch of yards.
They'll take that without the fumbles or, you know, yeah.
So I just think Houston should be in there.
I still would probably have them ahead of the Bengals for sure.
Wow.
Maybe even the Eagles.
Yeah, I think Houston.
And again, they played just Super Bowl champion predicted.
They did, but if their defense is the seventh or eighth,
I don't think you think they're going to beat.
Oh, if they're seventh or eighth instead of first or second,
I got to see CJ Stroud do it against the team that is in Buffalo's defense in a shootout.
I would, I thought there was two ways to read that game.
You're either impressed with Stroud in a loss or you're worried about their defense in a loss.
What about worried about your Super Bowl champions defense?
Because you don't think Stroud's good and they allowed 31 to them.
Yeah, I, hey man, they're all.
If that offense, again, if that offense can score 36 on that defense, because I am not worried about Houston defense.
So you just, you're not worried about Houston.
You know, you think Buffalo's.
He loves offense.
I don't think that's the history.
I don't think that's the history, but that's not my problem.
Here's the problem.
The Rams shouldn't be on there.
The Rams are not the Rams.
Aaron Donald's not playing yet.
Miles Garrett is having surgery.
That's correct.
So their past evens, which we were worried about,
has potentially gotten, last season, I mean,
has potentially gotten worse.
Because Jared Verst plays for the Browns now.
Miles Garrett, not playing for anybody.
Jaylon Watson, one of their big additions,
allowed two touchdowns.
Trent McDonffy's playing out of position.
Then they've got the oldest quarterback in the entire league
that isn't saying the craziest things
you've ever heard in your life on a podcast.
That's true.
And he's looking like it.
Well, one game, yeah.
Well, that's all we have to work with.
Again, I am going.
One man's one game is another man's 100% of the season.
And I was here to tell you that I think the Rams are right now in the short term until they get Miles Garrett back.
And then we'll see what he looks like when he comes back.
I'd be nervous about them.
I dropped him five spots.
They were the clear second best team in the NFL last year,
and they lost a game in Australia.
That's as far as I'm willing to drop them right now.
But they also lost their best.
They also lost Miles Garrett.
It's the biggest injury in the NFL this year.
I agree.
And by the way, we'll talk about the game as the week goes on.
I think they could be in danger of losing to the Giants.
I do not think that's a good spot for them.
That's another.
I'm shocked you don't have your Giants on.
They're a week away.
They're knocking on the door.
Wow.
What a top 10 Tuesday.
Just fantastic.
You should go to the movies together.
Wow.
I'll pick you up.
That would be great.
You don't.
Yes, I will.
Don't count them.
Don't believe on.
What does that do with you?
He'll come up with some time.
I'm going to pick them up.
The day before.
It's good for the environment.
How shocking was the Broncos performance last night?
Quite next.
Thanks for hanging with us at the O.T.
We got Greg Jennings out here.
Let's go back to K.C.
Where the Chiefs took down the Broncos, 3110.
I don't know if you saw the.
banners earlier, but they put the rest of the AFC West back on notice.
Broncos offense operating under new O.C. Davis Webb.
Bo Nix was asked if he felt the offense had let down his new play caller.
Take a listen.
The players did not make it easy on him today.
Pretty pitiful, actually.
He shot it with conviction.
I thought he really, I mean, we called exactly what we prepared for and what we wanted to get to.
And we just didn't execute.
And then we were behind and just.
Literally, I don't think we did a whole lot of good consistently enough to win the game at all.
Greg, this is a 14-win team that would have been in the Super Bowl last year if Bo Nix didn't break his ankle.
Are you shocked by how they looked last night?
I'm very shocked by how they looked, both on the deep inside of the ball,
but even offensively, despite what we might believe Bo Nix is or not,
I didn't, I thought he looked shockingly.
worse than in last year.
Because he wasn't like great consistently
throughout the course of last year.
Now fourth quarter, okay,
we know he played excellent in the fourth quarter.
But watching him play,
he seemed hesitant and decisive at times,
not just letting the ball go,
not trusting what he saw.
He was kind of careless and loose with the ball in the pocket.
He put the ball on the ground three times.
There was a lot that I'm like,
come on, Beau.
What are you doing?
and you're hurting your team right now.
And this wasn't just on Bo Nix.
Jalen Waddle, obviously they sign him.
Go get him to add to what Bro Nix has at the receiver position.
He was a no-show.
I didn't think the receivers were creating a lot of separation.
They didn't commit to running the ball,
which was something they were actually having success with.
It was just shocking.
And unfortunately, for,
the play caller, it's first time calling plays.
Obviously, we understand who Sean Payton is,
but I didn't think it was solely on him.
I thought there was a couple times where, you know,
Peyton possibly would have ran the ball or called a different play.
But, you know, this was on the players.
Bo Nix played very bad last night.
So I want to, I'll make the defensive point in a second.
I thought that Troy Aikman had a great moment of the broadcast last night
after the halftime interview with Sean Payton,
when Sean Payton is asked about, you know,
how it's going with him not calling plays.
And he's like, ask me at the end of the game.
And it's like, he was like clearly very stressed about it.
And Aikman comes back out and he goes,
I've known Sean Payton a long time.
He is clearly biting his tongue.
And that was the part that was the most shocking to me.
It's like, okay, if you're going to give up the play calling,
you've got to give up the play calling.
You have to be committed to it.
It can't just be because you don't want Davis,
to get a head coaching job, you have to actually be committed to it.
If you're going to undercut him 30 minutes into your season,
I just think that that is more of a sign of organizational dysfunction.
It's a Sean Peyton team.
You won 14 games last year.
You've been there for a while.
There's no reason that out of week one,
there should already be a storyline of his Sean Peyton going to undercut Davis Webb,
and there's going to be some sort of coaching controversy in-house.
That felt so unnecessary, almost like adding kerosene to the fire with it, which was already a game that was getting away from them.
And then on the defensive side of the ball, they couldn't tackle.
And I know that players will say, coaches will say, well, we don't tackle in preseason.
We don't do enough contact drills in training camp.
But like the historic nature of the yards after mistackles, I don't know that Travis Kelsey still has a lot of juice left.
But he did last night when guys are diving at his feet and then he's got 40 yards.
of open space.
So if I'm a Broncos fan, I'm hoping that that's an outlier game.
But I feel like it should have just felt like an outlier game instead of the house is on
fire.
And they just didn't help themselves.
Yeah.
Defensively, like, what I'll say is when you don't have the opportunity to get those
type of actual reps that emulate a game, the expectation is for you to prepare like a pro.
But everybody else has the same set of circumstances.
Exactly.
Yeah.
Exactly. So for me to excuse, make that an excuse for the Denver Broncos,
a outfit defensively that was one of the best in all of football last year.
Like, I can't do that. I will not do that because they are composed of a lot of professionals
that understand the standard that which they set last year.
And you don't come out against a team knowing they're going to punch you in the
with a new and reinvigorated run game and not be prepared to tackle.
That's just that's that's that's not preparing to win.
They just should have it should have just been a bad day at the office.
But with the Sean Payton comments and the tackling and the score getting out of hand,
it felt it felt to me like a loss that could linger for Denver more.
And then I was looking up at Sean Peyton.
He's four and eight in September as the Broncos coach.
And he's 28 and 12 the rest of the time.
So they should have come out at that game and just been like projecting confidence.
We had a bad day.
We're going to be fine.
Instead, I feel like there's all of these questions about play calling and if the defense isn't good and bow nicks and all that.
And they just made this game way worse.
Well, it's way worse because, Danny, when you watch the game, is there one thing that you can take away from that game?
Even as an onlooker that you were like, you know what, but they did that well, there was nothing.
There was nothing.
It was wild.
There was nothing.
You watched that game with Nick.
I'm sure that was in his hand.
Yeah, it was rough.
Moving on to Philadelphia, Eagles held on for a week one win over the commanders.
And despite the win, reason to believe in their offensive struggles haven't gone completely
away under their new offensive coordinator, Sean Mannion.
The athletic had a piece out this morning on what Philly looked like in the second half.
The Philadelphia Eagles changed offensive coordinators.
Their second half problems remains, writing, Eagles were again benefiting.
of a defense that forced three and outs at a 45.4% clip up from 27.8 last year.
And a career day from hunter, Braden Mann, who twice pinned puns within the 10 and the 5.
These are their second half numbers.
10 points scored, 13 allowed, 78 passing yards, 58 rushing yards, and sacked two times.
This is a, we've had this conversation about the Eagles.
They won, but it wasn't pretty.
but it's supposed to be pretty.
What were your first impressions?
So I'm past it in terms of looking at the eagles and thinking and believing, being of the belief, that it's supposed to be pretty.
That's just not how they, that's not how they win football.
You're not looking for style points.
I'm not looking for style points.
Okay.
Okay.
This team understands the main objective is to win the game.
It's going to be a grind.
And they make it into a grind sometimes self-inflicting.
But one of the things that can,
can't happen. And my first impressions were, you know what, I thought Jalen Hertz let the ball go.
He obviously was going to push the ball down the field. I thought he used his legs at times,
which was great and promising. But what can't continue to happen is what happened last year.
And that's the not being able to sustain drives, the three and outs. You can't continue to do this.
And this is who they were last year. The numbers supported. Last year, they were, they led the NFF,
in three and out percentage.
Yeah.
High is in the NFL, week one, you jump right back in that lane.
They started the second half with three straight three and outs.
And one of the issues that we had with this team was, okay, they can get out to a great start or they look good to start.
And then they come out in the second half and it's like a completely different outfit, specifically on the offense side of the ball.
And we saw that happen again, that trend.
Now, Jalen Hertz made some plays.
And this isn't all on him.
This is a part of Sean Mannion, play calling, play design, making adjustments because teams are going to go in that half, make adjustments.
And then when you come out, you have to be ready for whatever adjustments they made and you have possibly made.
And they just haven't shown that they have the ability to do that at a high level.
I look at Philly as so many things about our job, we talk about quarterbacks and we talk about offense.
their story is defense.
That's what they are.
Which makes their offense disappointing
because they have a quarterback
with a $250 million contract
who's been great in two Super Bowls
and is a Super Bowl MVP
and is in commercials.
And it feels like he should be better.
But then you look up and it's like,
well, they had three touchdowns
and no turnovers and they won the game.
So I get why Philly is protective of him.
But if you have a bunch of offensive linemen
that even casual football fans can name,
even though Dickerson's injury
and he was terrible in the game
and said he was a liability
and he'll hopefully be back for the stretch run,
It's like, Devante Smith is great.
Sequin Barclay is great.
Goddard is great.
Your offensive line is supposed to be great.
Your quarterback, based on what you pay him, is supposed to be great.
I am underwhelmed by the offense, but you are a defensive team.
Your defense has the names and they produce.
It is 13 straight games, allowing 24 or fewer points.
You have arguably the best defensive coordinator who isn't a head coach in the NFL and Vic Fangio.
You have stars at all three levels of your defense.
The Eagles are a defensive team.
We just happen to talk about their quarterback a lot.
Look, we want to see them throw up a lot of points.
They should because of the talent on their team and money invested.
And here's what I will say.
Like we saw the Chiefs, and I know we're going to get into the Chiefs,
we saw them commit to something, albeit they had to because of who was under center
and what he's coming off of injuries with.
But I just feel like the Eagles need to commit to something.
and then accent it with the other,
whether that's we're going to commit to the run
and we're going to run the ball 35 to 40 times a game
and then we'll sprinkle in some throws.
That's who we're going to be.
We'll see they find a way to win.
Hey, they get the Titans this week,
but then Bears, Rams, Jaguars.
Almost as good as a buy this week.
If you're looking at the Tennessee Titans
and not thinking highly of them,
there's a chance to kind of sharpen that tool.
Coming up, Mahomes, he's back, he wasn't good, and they still blew him out.
The rest of the league already on notice, it's next on the O-2.
Yeah, that's tough.
Yeah, he was 31 points with the quarterback not playing well.
It's pretty good.
24-10.
Make sure you tune in tomorrow.
It's 80 degrees in the forecast, but I've got the coolest stats of week one in the NFL.
Nice job, Christine.
It's good line.
We welcome you back to the O-T, and we go to Kansas City.
All right, so Mahomes and the Chiefs.
31 points for the quarterback who's not playing well.
Obviously, it sends a message and they did it against the 14-win Broncos.
Mahomes opened the game with a touchdown run, just 184 yards passing.
Not much down the field.
Didn't complete a pass more than seven air yards,
but he did have a pair of passing touchdowns.
So Greg, do you consider the Chiefs back?
Is that the statement here?
Look, I don't consider them being back.
I will consider them back when Mahomes,
gets back to form.
And he definitely is not in form, mid-season form.
He admitted it.
Yeah, and we saw it.
We watched the game.
But what I will say is when you have a team that has championship pedigree and they
understand what it takes to win from top down, meaning coaching, coaches to players,
and they don't have their best player or they're not relying on their best player to be
their reason for winning,
that gives opponents room to, like, pause and say,
oh, shoot, here we go again.
Again, I'm not there yet because you can put the numbers up
with Patrick Mahomes last night.
If this is what he's going to do.
Well, there's no way, right?
Well, here's the thing.
To start the season off, because if this is who he's going to be,
at least to start.
where he talked about getting the ball out of his hand,
being a little quick with his reads,
and you're going to get this,
and you tell me that defense plays the way that they play,
and Kenneth Walker and that offensive line
can impose their will in that fashion,
they're going to be a problem.
They're simply going to be a problem
because you're saying, okay, Mahomes can be that,
which that was bad in terms of what we know him to be,
But we also understand he's going to be more than that down the road.
This team is going to be a problem if you approach this team and say,
you know what, we're going to let Mahomes beat us.
That is a scary thought, Danny.
If you're going into a game and you say, you know what, we got to let Mahomes beat us
because we got to see if he can actually be what he's, what he once was.
Yeah, I think I wouldn't bet against him.
Mahomes. And my guess is over the course of the year he'll get there, even if their
pass-catching weapons aren't excellent. And I did not think that that game plan last night was
about Mahomes' knee. I thought it was about Denver's defense and we're going to run the ball.
Like, that's what we're going to do. We are going to run the ball because your pass rush is excellent.
We have some serious questions on our offensive line, namely at left tackle. And we are going
to try to impose our will. It was not a coincidence that the first four plays of the
the game. Hand off, hand off, hand off. They were setting a tone. They were setting
setting a message. And so I don't think they are back in terms of a dominant team. I don't think
that they're going to look like that every week. I don't think that their opponent is going
to shoot themselves in the foot and do them all those fairing 248 yards after missed tackles.
It's literally record breaking. So I just, I don't think that that will happen. But the new thing is
that guy right there, Kenneth Walker, number nine.
it's not a tough bar to clear,
but he is the best running back
Patrick Mahomes has ever played with.
And so Andy Reid has a history
when he has very talented big play running.
They were throwing in the ball.
Not a ton, but some.
I'm not expecting him to be Brian Westbrook
or Shady McCoy necessarily,
but it was the best game a running back it had had
since Patrick Mahomes has been there.
By a long shot.
So if you give him that,
then as he gets more comfortable, as the offensive line gets healthier,
as Rishi Rice gets back into form, as whatever additions they make,
I do think over the course of the season,
there is a path to them being a top offense.
Now listen, they scored 31 points.
They would take that every game of the week.
But I looked at a little bit more of that game as Denver making mistakes
than the Chiefs being dominant,
but Kenneth Walker adds a dimension that Mahomes has simply never had.
Yeah, and I think even with that, when you look at,
if I'm the Kansas City Chiefs and I'm looking,
at this opponent and I know what they were
and who they've been defensively
and what they were last season.
They didn't give up a lot.
They were second in yards per game
in terms of their opponent rushing yards.
Week out a chance in week one to test
who we are, to see where we are
and what we're capable of being
in terms of our season
because of our quarterback situation
and they did it.
You score 31 points, Greg.
And over and over again.
You score 31 points and your quarterback's not good.
It's scary for the rest of the league.
We got the OT Awards, weekly honors for the NFL.
Caleb Williams and the Bears scoring 59 points is going to make an appearance,
but they're not going to win every award.
Listen, it's an unbiased committee of one.
Coming up on the OT.
Time now for the OT Weekly honors, all leading up to our end of the year,
OT Award show.
First throw of the week
goes to Caleb Williams.
Greg, 22 yards, double coverage,
right hash to left part of the end zone.
What a throw.
It was a good throw.
I think the catch was even better.
You think it could have been throw and's catch of the week?
When I look at this, I'm like, that's a great catch by Colcomit.
When you look at this, you're not impressed by this throw?
The throw is great.
The throw is definitely great, but a tight end,
making that over the shoulder catch,
Cole Komet, that was impressive.
Listen, I cold's my guy.
I know.
That's why I was shocked
that it wasn't catching the week.
They scored 59 points.
I wanted Caleb to get in there.
It's a pretty great throw.
Caleb's always going to be in there.
You don't have opportunities.
It's an excellent point.
Time now for our football guy of the week.
Oh my goodness.
Can you talk about this?
What is happening in the film room
when they see Tyler Owens go through a double team,
and a block and make the tackle.
Hey, look, everybody looking like,
hey, you got them?
You got, hey, when we get,
we get hands on them, we both do not let go.
You cannot double,
double team a guy and let that happen.
That is like an absolute no-go
in any special team unit room,
but my man is on a mission.
But wait, what about today,
like they're doing, in Washington?
Today, today in Washington,
they celebrate you.
guy, you're a goat. And in Philly? Oh, you're getting clown all day in that film rule.
I love this video so much. It's just like, that is a, that man has a tough job.
You're talking about grown. Shout out to Tyler Owens. Time now for our, what the bleep honor of the week.
Yeah, I didn't do. This was scored a forward pass. And Greg, I know reading on television isn't great, but this is the official rule.
If contact by an opponent materially affects a passer after the passer begins his throwing,
motion. It is a forward pass if he passes the ball, regardless of where the ball strikes
the ground, a player, an official or anything else. I thought the goal was to affect the
passer. Yeah. He starts the motion, but then the throw having, so it's allowed to go backwards.
This was, this is frustrating for all defenders, especially pass rushers in the game last night.
Bo Nix had one where it got knocked out of his hand, but because that's a fumble. Yeah.
Like, you think it's a, oh, I know. The defender's like, I thought I was supposed to affect the
But it's like, no, a forward pass.
Absolutely insane.
They can all thanks Tom Brady for.
The Weekly Honor for Best Defensive Play.
Bejohn Robinson had more targets than everyone else on the Falcons combined.
I'm watching this game and I'm like, defend the swing pass, defend the swing pass, defend the swing pass.
T.J. Watt defends the swing pass and takes us to the house.
Yeah, that's that.
That's impressive.
I mean, he does this better than been most receivers.
We catch from the jug machines like up close.
to practice sometimes and to have a ball coming this hot, snatch it out the air, get up
and finish it for a touchdown.
That's impressive.
I mean, I'm not saying it's not impressive.
It won the award.
But you should know it's coming when all Cooper Russians do it is throwing it into the flat.
It's like, you should have been.
You can know what's coming.
You might bat that down.
You should have had three picks.
99 out of 100 times.
No one's catching that.
This is the biggest oops of the week and it pains me.
This is Justin Herbert.
They're down 12.
Two guys unblocked.
And if we look at it from the other angle,
there's the two guys unblocked.
That's three offensive linemen on one defensive lineman
and two defensive linemen on zero offensive linemen.
Yeah, you know.
What had happened?
What had happened was the same thing that happened in the Green Bay Packer game
against the Minnesota Vikings.
He should call Jordan Love and they should commiserate?
Yeah, absolutely.
Yeah, Harbaugh's like it's on the guy running the hot route.
I'm like, I don't know, maybe block the guys.
Somebody.
Maybe block the guys?
One of them.
Who won week one?
Jackson Dart.
At home, division rival, controlled the game.
Under control.
He's labeled as reckless, and all he does is go 23 of 29
with 54 rushing yards, three touchdowns, and 230 passing yards for a win.
Jackson Dart won the week.
Yeah, he definitely won the week.
Obviously, Sunday night football to show up in the fashion that he did,
he was excellent.
He was excellent for his team.
see how he is moving forward.
I wonder if anyone predicted that.
No.
Who's got two thumbs.
It was this guy.
See you tomorrow on the OT.
Yeah, that's right.
Yeah.
