Starting point is 00:00:00 BBC Sounds music radio podcasts. The Football Daily podcast. Listen on BBC Sounds. Defending champions England are heading into the women's Euros off the back of a 7-0 thumping over Jamaica at the King Powers Stadium with us inside watching all the action to former Lionesses, goalkeeper Karen Bardsey, former defender Gilly Flatti, interviews and reaction to come to that huge win, that perfect send off for the Lionesses. But our commentator Vicky Sparks was calling the match, couldn't have gone too much better Vicky. No clean sheet, seven goals, comeback for Lauren James and I think some really stand out individual performances. Yes it wasn't perfect, yes they were tested a bit by Jamaica in the first half, a side rank 35
Starting point is 00:00:56 places below them in the world rankings and we have to say missing several of their big players. Yes there was a particular set piece that England escaped with a VAR review that ruled out what would have been an equalizer for Jamaica, rightly ruled out for an obstruction on the goalkeeper Hannah Hampton. So I think Serena Viggen from the first half will pick out a few things that, you know, she won't have been particularly happy with. But overall, putting all of that aside, I mean it's a really positive way to go into defending their European crown Against France in in six days time couple of goals for Ella tune in the first half Lucy bronze with a really smart run and
Starting point is 00:01:34 Header from close range and then Georgia Stanway, Alicia Russo, Agi Beaver Jones and Beth Mead all getting on the scoresheet too And now to we say Lauren James on her comeback getting an assist But it was more than that the way that she just floats so effortlessly around the pitch the way that she can provide that little bit of magic that little bit of sparkle that opponents seem to on her day just be unable to deal with and it really gave the fans a lift and the players a lift as well so many many positives for England in terms of you you know, that send off, they've done it in style. There really are lots of great individual performances to get stuck into
Starting point is 00:02:10 Karen, but let's start with Lauren James. As Vicky was saying, and we've had people getting in touch all through the commentary this evening. Rob saying Lauren James is on a whole different level, five minutes on, she sent in three world-class balls. You have to pray she is fit for all the games. She is the best in the world. Are we getting, are we getting too excited? It's hard not to. She, she, there's so much to like about Lauren James. I just think she needs to be managed in the right way. And, you know, giving her some time, a glimpse of what she can offer this Linus midfield and attack. It's really exciting. It's it's mouthwatering stuff. You know, for me, she's a little magician in the midfield. Isn't she? Her natural movement, the unpredictability and shooting ability that she has. But
Starting point is 00:02:52 for me it's like the nonchalance. You know, she's just quite happy just to kind of... looks like she's going about her own business in the midfield, picks up some great areas, gets on the ball, goes ahead and puts a great ball into the area, takes a shot. And it's just... it just looks so easy for her. And I think I just love it. I just really like that. And the fact that she's added that out of possession work, she did get some criticism back in the day at Man United
Starting point is 00:03:12 and moving to Chelsea. She's really obviously worked on that. So more to come for me. It's something Serena Vigman asked of her, Gilly, earlier in the year. She said, I want to see her working deep. And actually, I think we saw a few tackles there in England's own box from Lauren James, not scared to now get back and help the team.
Starting point is 00:03:29 But you were particularly identifying the fact that Vigman had put her in, in that number 10 role rather than out wide. She was occupying those half spaces and it didn't really look like she'd been gone for three months. No, and I think you took like the defensive side. I think she's got two managers, both for the national team and at club level, who won't stand for and not accept doing that defensive duties. So I think both of them are great with her in that sense. But yeah, I think it helped because the Jamaican with film was just way off it today. She was allowed that
Starting point is 00:03:58 freedom just as you say, seeing between the pockets, but the pocket was so good. But with Lomyn James, she's just so exciting. And I think she just sees things that other players don't see. And I think we're talking about that cross for Russo. Like other players, when they had the ball wide, would have put the ball straight across, which we've seen throughout the game. Then when she cuts back,
Starting point is 00:04:19 most players would have come back for the edge of the box. She sees Russo's run and she's able just to put the ball on her head. And I think the verse about managing minutes and managing expectations as well. Everyone talks about Lauren James. She's going to be a marked player when she does play. How can we out in Switzerland? Get the best out of Lauren James, slightly up tempo, strange remix of sweet Caroline going on in the King power at the moment. I wonder how many times we might hear that over the next couple of weeks. It does though, the Lauren James conundrum, Karen also then brings up questions over Ella Toon, who started today in the number 10 roll. I think a couple of people are a little surprised by that. Two goals though from her. Where
Starting point is 00:04:59 does Vigmin go next then? Is that, was she showing us that today, Vigmin, because she needs to know that someone else can step in if Lauren James can't start? Or do you think that is part of the plan? Oh, that's an interesting one. I'm not sure. I think it's difficult to compare, I think, Lauren James and Ella Toon. They're just completely different players. But I think for me, watching Ella Toon today, there was a steely determination about her. You know, as, as Julie rightly said, they weren't like pockets of space. They're probably more like, what would you say, buckets,
Starting point is 00:05:29 perhaps. There was a lot of space in the midfield for Ella to get in between. And I think all you can do is just play what's in front of you. And she had this, you know, what we're used to seeing from her is a lot of like creative passing and things like that. But the fact that she's adding goals at this point in time to her game as well is something really exciting, I think, for England. But yeah, the opposition will be more difficult in terms of Grace Clinton as well, adding her into the mix. For me, she's slightly different profile in terms of she'll pick the ball up
Starting point is 00:06:00 and run with it a little bit more and attract some danger, maybe similar to Jess Park. So lots of choice in terms of who plays where. And I'm glad it's Serena's headache and not mine. Jess Carter, Julie, was a name we picked up, particularly that performance in the first half. She was making deafening tackles, getting all of the ball. She's played 90 minutes at left back today. She got the assist as well early on. How much is that a statement of intent from Beegman if she's starting playing the full 90, Neve Charles comes on and replaces someone else?
Starting point is 00:06:36 Yeah, I think it's a huge statement. And I think, no, Jessica had a brilliant game today. And I think she she's always been a player that likes to get forward, it's about having that quality and the decision-making when you do go forward And I think we all know just cards is a brilliant defender She's gone engine, but it's about making sure you've got the quality both attacking wise and defensively But I also said about protecting Lucy bonds No, you see Lucy bonds is not a young pup anymore And she's had her injuries and we have to look after because we do know that we're stronger with her in the team. It's about if something happens, what is that, what is plan B?
Starting point is 00:07:12 Still deafening inside the King Power Vicky because the crowd are now being given a chance to say farewell and good luck to the England Lionesses before the Euros. Yes, they are all being introduced individually here on the pitch in the center circle. You've got a big plinth that says Lionesses, a big arch and banner above their heads. And they are two, there you go, Ella Toon's name being roared after her brace here today in this 7-0 win over Jamaica in their final friendly. And they're all lining up now,
Starting point is 00:07:46 the players behind this big banner that has the three lions crest on as the Lioness is prepared to defend their first major trophy and this is important isn't it Karen and Gilly as former Lionesses yourselves, you know to see the home crowd cheering you and giving you all that energy. Because of course, last time when they won the Euros, it was in England. They had the advantage of a home crowd throughout the entire tournament and they're going to have to deal with a different reception in Switzerland. Yeah, I just love the fact that, you know, the profile of the game has changed so much
Starting point is 00:08:22 as well. You know, that win at Wembley against Germany just catapulted the game into a different stratosphere. And obviously going away to Switzerland, it's going to be a completely different feel. But it'll be exciting for the players because it'll feel like a proper tournament. Because I think when you play at home,
Starting point is 00:08:38 as much as you enjoy the crowds and being at home, like there's something about going away and being with a group of people for six weeks in an unfamiliar environment where you kind of bet like y'all bond a little bit together. So I think For this moment, it's you know a bit of an appreciation from the fans obviously to the players and vice versa for all of their support and and well wishes I suppose but They'll be they'll be really really pleased I think with
Starting point is 00:09:02 Being able to kind of send themselves off in this way and connect and thank the fans for all of their support. Serena Wigman and Leah Williamson just giving their words of encouragement to the crowds here and to the players as well. And, you know, we go back to what this means, Gillian, in terms of getting this send off. What sort of feelings and emotions do you think England will be going into this tournament with? Off the back of this performance, off the back of the Nations League and off the back of 25,000 turning out to wish them well and wish them every single bit of luck in the world ahead of the Euros?
Starting point is 00:09:35 I think they should be really excited. You know, you're coming into this tournament as the holders, you know, so you've earned that level of respect anyway. It's going to be a lot harder than the previous Euros because everyone wants to beat you, you know, so you've earned that level of respect anyway, it's going to be a lot harder than the previous Euros because everyone wants to beat you, you know, and you're in a group with France, Netherlands, and then you're also in a group with Wales We know how spicy that is anyway. So yeah, I think they should feel excited I think the way women's football is now and the the vibe around it, it just grows. Every single tournament, every single game. And I just think this is what they deserve.
Starting point is 00:10:08 You know, they are the holders of the competition and they should be going out there full of confidence. How much pressure is there on them in terms of going in as holders? And I asked that from your perspective because I asked that very question to Jess Carter yesterday and she said, there's no extra pressure at all. You know, we're just going into it as a tournament.
Starting point is 00:10:25 Do you think that they will carry the weight of that even subconsciously? I feel like maybe that pressure is put on by other teams, you know, in terms of, like you say, Jilly, you know, they are currently the holders. And everyone is going to want to beat them. They've got a massive target on their back, but I don't think they see it that way themselves. I think, listen, they've put that behind them. That is in the past. Now it's their opportunity to take the performances up another level for their own pride. And they know exactly what they're capable of doing. They're such
Starting point is 00:10:51 incredibly talented players. So I don't think this clearly isn't the same squad that won it in 2022. And I think they know that and they recognize that. So now it's an opportunity for the players that haven't been there to go and make that mark themselves. Yeah, I agree. And I think if you look at it from a club perspective, when you was at Man City and I was at Chelsea, people wanted to beat you because you was the best. And I think that's how it goes with England, as well, is that people will raise their game a whole lot higher.
Starting point is 00:11:18 Wow, the pyrotechnics are going off here at the King Power. A huge montage of an England flag is just being folded away as the players have applauded the fans here inside the stadium. And Katie, you have knitted very quickly all the way down from our gantry position to the bowels of the King Power Stadium where you're going to be speaking to Serena Vigman and some of the players. Did you get a view of all the fireworks and the flames going up there? I didn't see too much. You can hear it sort of ricocheting down here in the rooms beneath the tunnel where I'm waiting. Yeah, hopefully we'll
Starting point is 00:11:50 grab people, get some reaction, but I can hear the noise and it's brilliant to see or hear, I suppose from my perspective, how many fans have stuck around at the King Power to see them off. It felt, Gilly, like a really positive atmosphere throughout most parts of the game. And I think also just to build on your point, you were saying there that to see England play a fully intense 90 minutes against, yes, a lower ranked side. Yes, they were poor at times today, Jamaica. But that hasn't always been the case for England. Perhaps we look at Belgium and Portugal recently in the Nations League, where I think you could probably suggest that
Starting point is 00:12:25 England weren't quite on it for the entire match. There were moments of complacency and less intensity. Yeah and I also think previously as well there's probably the risk of with England where they have played a poor opposition as such and they've dropped down to that opposition's levels rather than going we're still going to maintain our high standards and we're going to punish this team today which is what they've done. They've put away seven goals, they had a little bit of scare in the first half with the disallowed goal but then they've come away with a clean sheet as well. So to recap the goal scorers, Karen, two for Ella Toon, one for Lucy Bronze, Georgia Stanway. There was a lot of today I thought kind of classic goals for those players if you know what I mean, like Tooney shooting from the edge of the D, bronze
Starting point is 00:13:08 with a nice pinpoint header, Stamway with a lovely booming shot. But then we had goals as well from Russo, who we think is the out and out starting number nine, Agui Beaver Jones as well. You said something interesting in commentary. You said, would Serena ever suggest starting both of them together? Well, I mean, they've certainly got the attacking talent, haven't they? And I think the question is who would play on the wing. That's probably, or the wings, I should say,
Starting point is 00:13:33 in terms of wing backs, et cetera. But yeah, whether or not she would do it, but I think it would just be really fun to watch. Would it be the likes of Russo and Agibiva Jones together? Or would you see a slightly different profile, more physical profile, like Michelle Ajumeng as well? So yeah, I think it would be interesting whether or not it would ever happen. That's for Serena Vigmen to know and us to find out.
Starting point is 00:13:58 She's not usually an experimenter during major tournaments, Jilly. So not sure we're holding our breath. Me and Karen up here are having a little giggle at the thought of it as well. So yeah, she isn't really a great experimenter. But you never know, England might win their first two games and be more confident to say listen against Wales. Let's try something.
Starting point is 00:14:18 You saw it in the World Cup, didn't you? Lauren Hemp obviously played up top as well alongside the, was it Alessia Russo? And then the change of formation as well, changing to the 3-5-2. I think she will do things. And OK, it wasn't at a major tournament, but I remember Leah Williamson playing in Central Midfield for six months for England before the Euros. And then off the back of her shaky half against the Netherlands, so we didn't even thought
Starting point is 00:14:38 right and putting her at centre half and she played the entire tournament there. I mean, if it's a necessity, look, she'll do it. And I think she's recognised as well that she needs a contingency plan for Kira Walsh as well because we experienced that in Australia as well so she you know today we saw Kira Walsh come off and saw George Stanway drop into that holding midfield position so you know through necessity of course she'll make changes but yeah I just thought it would be interesting I'd like to if you fancy asking her I think you should. We've got Serena Wigman live with us here. Congratulations, what a result. 7-0 in front of home fans here at the King Power.
Starting point is 00:15:09 What did you learn from the victory today? Yeah, of course a very nice game. Of course we wanted to do well and wanted to entertain the fans here in the stadium and watching. Knowing that Jamaica didn't play with their best players, who were not available. Then still you have to do it yourself. So we expected to be in the final turn a lot, and we were. And I think we created many chances, scored seven goals, which were really nice, were different players too.
Starting point is 00:15:34 And even though we did really good, I think we could have scored even more. In the first half sometimes we had like, in the final pass or the final shot, we could have been a little more patient even and a little more composed but still 7-0 is really good and we the second half we also want to take out that one or two counter-attacks they would have in the corners we did that better to the second half we know we
Starting point is 00:16:00 have to go to a next level starting next week against France and we totally aware of that and ready to go to Switzerland. You said Lauren James had been training well she came on today in the second half and made an instant impact so does that give us any clues as to what part she might play against France in England's opener on Saturday? Yeah of course that's what she showed she's a she's a special player and she worked so hard to be where she is right now. She could train every session over the last two weeks and also of course worked really hard at Chelsea to come back. We know we have a very good team with many options in midfield and
Starting point is 00:16:38 up front and when LJ come on and some other some other subs too they had an impact on the game and that's really nice to see. Jess Carter was another name we pulled out in our commentary today. Standout performance defensively, she was creating a lot on the left-hand side, got the assist as well, played a full 90 minutes at left-back. Yeah and yeah that was good as well as in the other part of the team also in the in defense we have options and we know that Jess is a very good defender and but she also shows she keeps it simple. She also was high on the pitch.
Starting point is 00:17:14 She wanted to get involved in the attacking part too and making runs even in behind together with that side of the pitch. So I thought that was good and it was really nice when she had that cross in the far post where Lucy Bronze headed it in. Yeah that was good to see too. In terms of Niamh Charles coming in late on and you put her in that right back position, I just wonder if you could give us a bit more information on that. I'm not sure everyone would see her as the natural right back replacement. Yeah because lately lately she has, or lately the last season, she has played a lot on the left side but she's actually right footed and I think she can play in a left fullback position and on the
Starting point is 00:17:53 right fullback position and I wanted to see that too. So that's where she got that opportunity because she feels more comfortable with her right foot, she can play with her left foot so she can do both. And just finally you mentioned all the goals coming from so many different players today. We saw goals from your two number nines, from Russo, from Aguibiva Jones. Karen Bardsley was part of our commentary team. She wanted me to ask you directly, are we going to see both of them play together at any point in the tournament? Oh, you never know, you never know. That could be. We have so many options up front and that's really good to have.
Starting point is 00:18:28 So you can change, you can figure out other tactics if you want to change tactics or you need a sub. Because that unit is just really strong but I think we have options in every unit. Well, what a victory today. What a send-off and best of luck leading into the Euros next week. Yeah, thank you very much. We're excited and hope you too. Five Live has the perfect lineup of podcasts to accompany the Euros. All the latest analysis, interviews and debate from Switzerland in the Football Daily podcast. We have them experienced players that have experienced winning with England. That Welsh passion, we never know when we're beaten.
Starting point is 00:19:04 Hello, I'm Maisie Adam. And I am Susie Ruffell. And together we host the women's football podcast, Big Kick Energy. The award winning. Oh yes, award winning. Yes, very much so. And join Lionesses, Ella Toon and Alessia Russo in the Toonie and Russo podcast. I know where I'll take you for your hen-do, Benidorm. Oh yes.
Starting point is 00:19:21 I would like that. Take the Euros with you this summer. Search Women's Euros on the BBC Sounds app. The Football Daily Podcast on BBC Sounds. Shall we talk about England's defensive performance today, Ben, Gilly and Karen? Because it was a clean sheet and Gilly, you said particularly that was really important for you to see, but did we learn a huge amount from that and from Hannah Hampton in goal today? I think from an England's point of view, I think they got lucky probably in the first half that they wasn't playing up against a higher opposition because they did give the ball away sloppily at times
Starting point is 00:20:02 and that's what I think sometimes is, you're looking at the goal that was disallowed. In my opinion, I think Keir Walsh should have dealt with it better before it even was allowed to get to a corner. I think Jessica does really well to get back defensively. She can't really control where that ball went because it was a block. But I think we pushed so high, we was left 2 v 1 up top.
Starting point is 00:20:22 And Keir Walsh and me hesitated and dropped off the forward for Jamaica And then she was allowed to have that run But I just think from an English point of view is a lot of the goals that they have conceded Over the past 12 18 months a lot of them have come from England's mistakes England giving the ball away Just or not marking well But just literally in possession forcing the ball and then getting punished for it. And they know that coming into the Euros with tough opposition, they aren't gonna be allowed to fall to do that.
Starting point is 00:20:51 In terms of that disallowed goal that Jamaica had, Karen, for Kayla McKenna ruled out in the end for offside that was obstruction in front of Hannah Hampson. Would you have liked to see that handled better anyway from a goalkeeping perspective? Yeah, of course. I think defensively like Julie said my job as a goalkeeper was always to help organise the back line and really prevent anything from happening so you're essentially moving chest spaces aren't you while the attack is still happening so you shift players around to
Starting point is 00:21:19 make sure that the ball does you know change possession you have a player close enough to affect it or at least delay any sort of transitional moment or counter-attack and speaking of the corner more specifically, I think as a keeper, you want to be commanding in your presence, you want to be making sure that your players are switched on, you want to make sure that if it does go short everyone knows... In fact, Karen, I'm just going to stop you there. We've got Ella Toon with us in the tunnel after that. Ella, congratulations, two goals, a massive win for England, a perfect send-off into Switzerland. Yeah, it was perfect. I thought it was a great game. It was one that we definitely enjoyed. There
Starting point is 00:21:54 was lots of goals, a clean sheet and we played some good football. So I think it was a great send-off and we're excited now to head out to Switzerland. What pleased you the most today? So many different goalscorers, yourself on the score sheet and starting clean sheet as well. Can you pick from that? A bit of everything really. But I think the desire to win, the desire to keep wanting to score. And it was nice that we had a few different goal scorers as well. But overall I think we should be really happy with the performance and yeah, it's definitely a good way to send ourselves off ready for the Euros.
Starting point is 00:22:29 You started today in that number 10 role, taking on France in that first game in just six days' time. Do you have any sense of what the starting XI is going to look like depending on what happened today? That's up to the boss and she'll pick the starting eleven that's right to play against France. I think no matter what happens, we're a great team, we want everyone to do well, we're all in it together. And no matter what my role is, I'll make sure that I give 100 per cent and I'll make sure that everyone's ready and up for it. And yeah, I mean, we're a great group, we're a team that is very together and we have a name for the tournament so no matter what happens, whoever starts in that game will make sure that we give 100%.
Starting point is 00:23:09 You didn't hurt your cause. I mean it's always nice to step out onto the pitch for England and no matter what I'll always give 100% when I do and today I really enjoyed it, got on the ball quite a lot and it was nice to get on the score sheet. I think I've not scored for a while in an England shirt so to get to today was really nice but we should be happy with the overall team performance. Well, best of luck next week and safe travels over to Switzerland. Thank you. Ella Thune there with us, so not giving too much away but as she says, Karen, it's Serena Viegman's prerogative in terms of the starting 11, but she did not hurt her cause today in what she
Starting point is 00:23:47 produced and she looked so business faced I thought as well, Ella too. She did on the pitch but at moments she did look like she was really enjoying it. I think there were times where, you know, the way that she kind of, I think for me, guided that second one in with her left foot, she was kind of like, okay, deflection and then she had a bit of a smile and almost couldn't believe that she'd gone that it had gone in and she'd mentioned that she hadn't scored an England shirt for quite a while and I think that's got to be a big feeling of relief for Alatun and you know to quiet the critics just for a little bit longer but she's right you know like ultimately the decision is out of her control entirely but I think she put her best foot forward and
Starting point is 00:24:22 gave Serena Vigman something to think about in terms of where that creative outlet's gonna come from in the midfield. Well and she was one of those super subs wasn't she Vicky during the Euros three years ago when England won the title for the first time and became a household name I think we forget actually that it's only been three years since that all began and now we have these cyclical conversations don't we and it's only been three years since that all began and now we have these cyclical conversations, don't we? And it's maybe, it shouldn't be that, you know, it's an immediate obvious Elatun start or not. I think it shows the strength and depth that England have developed because of
Starting point is 00:24:54 that win. Yeah, absolutely. And I think that's such a key thing when we think back to those Euros three years ago, you know, the impact that the substitutes had and of course players are going to want to start, of course players like Ella Toon and everybody in this squad is going to want to, but you can play such a key role if you can pin down one of those substitute roles as well. I mean, England subs at the Euros in 2022 provided seven goals and two assists between them. I mean, that is quite remarkable and you look at the two goals in the final, Ella Toon's a great thing to see the difference in the two goals. The two goals in the final, both scored off the bench.
Starting point is 00:25:30 It is one of those things that I think, of course, we have players like Lee Williamson, Alex Greenwood, Alessia Russo, Hannah Hampton. There are players that you know are going to start. But in terms of the role that players are going to play off the bench, it's going to be absolutely huge.
Starting point is 00:25:45 And it isn't just a bit part thing. That was a key part of England's success. The way that tactically the starting lineup and the substitutions worked together, all of that was so integral to England's success three years ago and it could well be again. Is there anyone, Gilly, who didn't come off the bench today that you really would have liked to see or felt it was important to see? I think obviously KB mentioned as well in regards to Letizia, I think obviously we're looking at Niamh Charles coming over and getting bored at Ryber, obviously Esme Mourne coming
Starting point is 00:26:15 in at centre back. I mean my Letizia has had a fantastic last couple of seasons as well in the WSO, I think she's been one of the players that have played the most minutes over the last few seasons. She's been integral to how Man United have done defensively this year. So, you know, I think it's a bit of a shame really that she wasn't featured today or given that chance to come on into the game. I would have liked to see Ajumang because I think if you're going to bring Niamh Charles on and you're going to play her at right back, I would rather see Michelle Ajumang come on. And, you, yes, they've got the attacking options of James and Beaver Jones, he came on
Starting point is 00:26:47 and did really well. But if Adjimang's in the squad, then it's because you believe that she could be a difference maker at some point, even if it's for five or 10 minutes. And the fact that she's only got one cap, yes, it was a brilliant appearance and you know, a cameo where she scored that super, super goal against Belgium on her debut back in April but I would have liked to see her just get 10 minutes or so just to show what she can do and you know that's that's me and I'm not Serena Vigvent and I'm not completely surprised that it didn't happen. I think maybe is there something to it like is this being some kind of I don't know like a like a secret weapon by the time that she gets to the tournament
Starting point is 00:27:23 she's kind of like okay no one's seen yet. No one knows how I'm going to utilize the strengths of Michelle Adjiman and they just, she just throws her on for the last five minutes and sees what happens. That was sort of the situation with Russo and Ella Thune, wasn't it? Three years ago, they felt like a little secret weapon for England. Well, and that's what she did obviously in the Belgium game and then look how that turned out. So, you know, if she would have played her today, you know, would she be giving too much away? I don't know, secret's out. She's got a worldy, didn't she?
Starting point is 00:27:49 Yeah, didn't stay in the box for long. I think what, 39 seconds? Was it something like that? Right. We are all done here for this evening at the King Power Stadium. So next stop, it is Switzerland. A reminder as well, you can keep across the tournament on 5 Live and the Football Daily podcast. Mark your cards this Saturday up against France. Commentary on 5 Live Kickoff is eight o'clock. Bonus interview with Georgia Stanway.
Starting point is 00:28:29 Georgia, congratulations. What a scoreline first off. Great team performance, goals coming from everywhere, including yourself. What was your favorite bit of our afternoon? Thank you. Yeah, I think it was just a good full round performance. I think what we'd worked on in training,
Starting point is 00:28:45 we just tried to implement in the game today. Our main focus was ourselves, making sure that, yeah, what we'd done in training, we could implement, we could find the patterns, we could just get the rhythm and, yeah, get the dynamics right, and I feel like that worked. Yeah, we could have scored more than seven, but at the same time, when it gets to those crucial moments,
Starting point is 00:29:05 we have to put it in the back of the net. What about you? Scoring for England again and it felt like a trademark Stanway kind of booming goal. Yeah, I'd had a few chances earlier in the game and I was a little bit disappointed with my execution and then that one I just smacked it. Classic goal from me in terms of just hit it as hard as I can. But no, I'm very happy I think after injury and after a long time being out it's nice to get the first one over the line and obviously nice to get the first
Starting point is 00:29:34 90 minutes, the first goal. So yeah, today personally there's a few milestones. And France up next, which even your manager Serena Wigman has just told us everybody knows will be a step up in terms of quality and pressure. How do you approach that game in six days' time? Yeah, of course. Of course we're going into a European competition, so everybody's going to up it. I think the beauty of a tournament is it's just who's better over the 90 minutes. It's about execution, it's about making sure that we do put the ball over the line. I think for us it's just continuing what we're doing. We've got a few more days before we lead up into that. We'll see our families tonight
Starting point is 00:30:14 which will be really nice and then come tomorrow and come when we get to Switzerland. We hit the ground running and all focus is on the first game. Well congratulations for today, for your goal, for the scoreline, and best of luck next week. Thank you very much. On BBC Sounds, this is Sport's Strangest Crimes.
