What a night for English teams in Europe in the Europa League semi-final first leg athletic
Bill Bowne-Nil Manchester United 3 lots of reaction on the way from San Mames at the Tottenham
Hotspur Stadium. Spurs 3, Bodo Glimped 1, so we'll be there as well. In the conference
league, Giardin won Chelsea 4 in the first leg of the semi-final. Chelsea, I mean, it
looks pretty certain like they'll be going through to the final to meet either Betis or Fiorentina. Betis 2, Fiorentina 1
was the full time score in that semi-final first leg. Anthony again amongst the goal scorers
for Raoul Betis in that game. So we've got all the reactions come and in the Premier League as well.
It's been a big night in those Champions League places. Nottingham Forest nil, Brentford 2,
It's been a big night in those Champions League places. Nottingham Forest nil, Brentford two, the full time score.
So Forest sixth in the Premier League table behind Chelsea on goal difference.
So a great night for Chelsea domestically and in Europe.
These, though, are the sounds of San Mames.
Ian Dennis is there and Manchester United, Ian, will feel they're going to be back there before too long.
Yes, they will. a superb Manchester United performance,
and surely back in Bilbao for the final then in three weeks' time.
After an early Garnacho goal ruled out by VAR,
United did survive some awkward moments,
I'm thinking of Onana's full-length save from Berenguer,
Inaki Williams with a wasted headed opportunity,
and Lindelof then with an important block from a goal-bound shock from Berenguer. But after Casamiro's header at the far post on the half hour, some excellent
work from Maguire who actually delivered the cross from the right-hand side, flicked on
by Ogarte, Manchester United never looked back. And then a turning point came just a
few minutes after that because Hoylan pulled back by the Spanish international defender
Vivian and after VAR intervention was a judge
to not only award the penalty,
but to send off the central defender
from Athletic Bilbao.
They were down to 10 men.
Bruno Fernandes converted that spot kick.
He then added a second on the stroke of half time
and Mats Rauhi rattled the crossbar in injury time
and Casemiro struck the post in the second half as well
as Manchester United cruised
to a comfortable first leg scoreline winning 3-0.
So we've got Paul Robinson alongside Ian in Bilbao, we've got Andros Townsend and Phil Jones with us as well.
Paul, I have done so many Manchester United discussions this season and if we're honest,
almost all of them have been negative discussions because
the European nights like tonight, like the second leg against Leon have been largely
the best parts of their season. One or two results excluded, but they were excellent
tonight, weren't they? Like I said in commentary, the best that I've seen them play under Ruben
Amorin. I've seen them play a lot this season, especially away in the Europa League.
They were excellent, granted they were playing against 10 men,
but they still had to do a job.
The first 20 minutes, their goal came under pressure,
they rode the storm, they got the noses in front,
arguably against the runner play,
and from that point on the penalty changed the game,
Athletic went down to 10 men,
and then Manchester United, from that point,
they completely controlled the game.
It was a very professional workman-like performance. to 10 men and then Manchester United from that point they completely controlled the game.
It was a very professional workman-like performance.
They went 3-0 up before half-time and you can imagine what the manager's saying.
The key message that Reuven-Amarin will have been saying in there at half-time is we do not concede.
The nil next to our name is the most important thing at the end of this game now.
Yes, if we get the opportunity we go and look for that fourth which would kill the game off and put the game to bed completely. But the zero was the all-important
for Manchester United tonight and it was an excellent performance. And like I said before
the game, this formation, this style, it seems to suit European football.
Best performance since the FA Cup final, Phil?
Yeah, yeah, I think so. I thought they were very good tonight. I thought hopefully the
penalty incident won't overshadow all the good that United did in the game because I
thought they were outstanding in certain moments of the game. I thought they managed the game
really well and those big moments in big games, you know the big players came out, you know
likes of Harry Maguire, I thought it was terrific, Bruno Fernandes, Casemiro was good, Garnacho
with his pace and in moments, I thought it was
a really well professional, good professional performance tonight, especially in the second
half.
As Paul mentioned, not to concede a goal, it was vital to take back to Old Trafford
and they've got themselves a real good lead now to get to the final.
Do you know, Andros, we could probably do a solid five minutes on the penalty if we
wanted to because it was such an important moment in the game and it's not just the penalty, it's
the red card as well.
However, there is part of me that thinks even by then, the direction of travel was very
much towards Manchester United.
They haven't got a great result only because of that incident.
No, no, I agree with Paul first and foremost that
Bill Bowell did start the game the better
and it was only when Casemiro gave United the lead
the tide did turn.
So you're right, the game had turned just before the red card happened
and you guys are in agreement that it was a penalty anyway.
So it would have been, even if Bill Bowell had 11 on the pitch
it would have been 2-0 to United and it would have been a long way back for Bill Bowe because
Man United did learn the lessons that they almost suffered against Lyon when they played
against 10 men and conceded two goals. They were no risk today. Yes, they counter-attacked
through Garnacho, but they did it from a good shape. They had balance behind them. So it
was a very, very professional performance from United in that second half.
I'm trying to think if you as a Bilbao manager, would you have done anything different when
you've gone 2-0 down? I don't know. Would you have changed the shape? A bit more, got
a bit more attacking? Would you or, you know, if you concede another goal, make it 3 or
4-0, then it is game over.
Well, as someone who's currently learning all of this stuff.
Yeah, no, I'm just trying to wrap, well...
Because at that point, 2-0 is a good result, isn't it? 2-0, I would have...
He went the other way though, Phil, didn't he?
Because he took off Berenguer,
who was probably their most attack-minded player.
Yes, yes, and it went against him really, didn't it?
Because they scored the third goal,
but I think I'd be very, very surprised
if they overturned that at Old Shelford.
I think Phil, in a two-legged tie, it would have been crazy to go two attacking and lose
the game four or five, whereas get back to Old Trafford, get 11 men, maybe get your sand
chat.
But I think what I will say is, I said this off air, I said how many times do you play
9 v 10 in training?
And the 10 will never score against the 9 because you're well set up on that. the first time. I think it was the first time I saw him. I said, How many times do you
play nine? The 10 in training
and the 10 will never score
against the nine because you
well set up and that to
concede another goal. Bill
Bowe in that moment in that
big moment was terrible. What
I would say, Andros is
sometimes it can be very, very
difficult playing against team
like Manchester United already
there. You know, we know they've had their problems this season, but that winger, I think he's called Maguire. Wow, what a cross for the first goal.
Amazing.
Oh, it wasn't just a cross.
It was the little shimmies and the chops and the cutbacks.
It was, I had to look twice because it
looked like it was a garnacho.
It was so smooth.
It wasn't stiff.
It was amazing.
No, fair play to Maguire.
And Phil said before the game about what great character
his big game player rides to the occasion.
Doesn't feel pressure. And we saw it in that moment. There was unbelievable. I didn't know we had
that in him, by the way. So you know, you never saw that in training. To be honest,
I've never seen that in training. No, but fair play. Great ball. Oh, I've Harry McGuire's
been speaking to TNT. Actually, I can, I can bring you the court. I found myself attacking
at the back post. It was nice to do a bit of dribbling out on the wing and put in a great cross. We had a lot of bodies in the box. They must have trusted
me to deliver the cross. I had a lot of bodies to aim at. I think the defender was probably saying,
go on, cross it. To be fair, you were saying to me that we were talking about the final of the
Champions League being at by Munich Stadium and you played against Ribéry and Robben
on the same afternoon.
I wouldn't have liked playing against Harry Maguire,
putting that kind of cross in.
True.
Yeah.
Can we also say probably lucky to be on the pitch
in the second half, Harry?
Oh, no.
No?
No.
Listen, was it a foul?
Yes.
Could it have been a book in?
Yes.
But I do think Lindelof was covering around,
and he was still quite away from goal.
I think that would have been super,
but what I did say is if he was gonna give a red card,
he probably would have done
because of the red card he'd given previously.
I think it's fair to say, Ian,
home crowd not massively enamored with the official tonight.
No, you'd actually, you'd moved away from us
by the time that he left the field of play,
but it was deafening
for the Norwegian referee Espen Askass.
They were still waving the white hankies at him, the white bits of card.
They were livid in the direction of the Norwegian referee.
But I think like Phil said, you know, that's what the narrative, I think that'll be suggested
here in Spain, that the referee has cost them. but I don't think that would be a necessarily fair
reflection because of I mean yes it was a turning point but even before that
Manchester United once they'd taken that lead through Casamiro were there then on
the front foot and they were asking the questions of athletic Bill Bauer but
it's fair to say he won't be he won't be returning to to the Basque region I
think for a long long, for a little jaunt
to San Sebastian or places nearby.
I think he'll be hiding in his dressing room until tomorrow morning just to make sure it's
all clear outside.
You know, Paul, we could focus in on probably on three or four Manchester United individuals
here but there is one thing that kind of links Maguire's performance and Casamiro's performance the the spine isn't it when you look at the way that the team set up Maguire, Casimiro, Fernandez. Fernandez started higher up alongside Garnaccio as the game went progressed in the second
half and Agathe went off, Mason Mountcomani dropped deeper but they were the leaders and
I think there's a lot of times this season that maybe some players at Manchester United
I don't think you can level that criticism at Bruno Fernandez I think he's probably the
standout player at Manchester United maybe wouldn't have got the wins that they have
done this season if it wasn't for him but I think others in that team have been criticized and rightly so. A team
of Manchester United size and stature should no way lose 15 games in a Premier League season
and you know when when things like that happen the criticism will come but I think there's no
way that you can criticize them for the way that they've played in this Europa League.
Again still the only side unbeaten if only Manchester United played on a Thursday night every night for their fans.
It just all goes through Bruno, doesn't it?
It does. He's pivotal for this Man United team. Everything comes through him. The way
he receives the ball, the way he takes the ball, the passes he sees, he's crucial for
this team. He just links everything together. The way they move the ball from back to front,
everything comes through him and all the assists
and all the chances creating somewhere along the line
in that phase of play, it will have come through Bruno.
Yeah, he's a very important player for Man United.
And, you know, hopefully they can keep hold of him
next season as well.
Do people-
Phil, do you think he's-
Sorry, go on, Andras.
Sorry, Phil, do you think he's listened to criticism
in the past about the way he leads the team in his body language at times and
He's improved that behavior become a better captain through the criticism
Yeah, I think the criticism can affect anybody by the way, but what I will say is is
Listen I can understand people
Venting the frustrations out when arms in the air or whatever, but he cares.
He cares about football and he cares about winning.
And being at Man United is all about winning.
And he's definitely somebody who you need in that team
and in that dressing room.
Just on that then, what is he like in training?
And the reason I ask that question is, you know, if like
a manager sort of like mentions a player or criticises a player in public, I always think
that's probably not a problem if they're also being honest with them one on one behind
the scenes. People talk about Bruno Fernandes and body language, that kind of thing. If
he's always the same, it doesn't really matter. It only matters if it has a negative effect
on the players. And I'd be amazed if it does, given the status and the stature he has.
I can only speak from when I was with him for two years.
That's not the impression and the interpretation I got from him.
He's a humble guy. He's very, very good with the young players.
Very accommodating with the young players. Always helping them.
Always giving them a helping hand, especially when they come across the train with them. He's professional and he's a terrific player. He's
a player that Man United have to keep hold of and hopefully they will do and get Champions
League football next season.
Some quotes coming in from Ruben Amorim also speaking on TNT, on Harry Maguire, he's a
good winger. Sometimes there are moments in our life where we have a difficult
time. Harry had a difficult time where maybe everything he did was seen as being wrong.
Now we can enjoy it. Everything he does has been right. I think you probably see quite
a lot in that film. Yeah, he deserves it. He really, really deserves it. He's a terrific
player. You know, I remember when he came to England and he's never let his country down
every time he's played. He's played some massive games for England.
He's been terrific. He's a very, very good player.
Like I said earlier in the show, I thought he was unfairly criticised at times
playing in a team that was really struggling for any sort of confidence
or lack of everything, a lack of
belief in the way we were playing at the time. But I'm delighted for him because that takes
bravery, courage to come back from the depths that he was probably at and you know people
probably don't realise that what he's probably going through with the family behind the scenes
as well and all the criticism that people don't see. He's still a human being but I'm absolutely delighted for him.
He's a terrific player and he's a leader, he's a captain.
Phil, do you think that this system suits him?
Because I do, playing this three at the back.
Playing in the middle, playing in the middle.
He's got legs and support around him, either side tonight.
I had Loro, Joro and Lindelof and he's got legs, he's got pace.
At times he's been criticised for his inability with his speed on the turn, etc.
But playing in a back three as the middle man, I think, suits him.
Absolutely, I think I've said in previous shows that playing in the middle of a back three
suits Harry Maguire because he can orchestrate the three at the back
where if you're on one of the wide players, you know, the wing-back jumps,
say the right wing-back jumps, the right centre-alf's got huge huge spaces to cover like 40, 50 yards to go and get up to the ball
where you know he just has to do a bit of shifting across and stepping in and jumping
onto the 10 when he needs to. He's very good on the ball, I don't think people give him
enough credit for the way he passes the ball. You know, like I said, he's terrific in both boxes.
He scores important goals and he's a leader.
He's a leader.
He commands respect in the dressing room.
The players look up to him, especially the young lads
and listen, I'm delighted for him.
I really am.
Robbo, I think the way Ruben Amorim wants to play
in possession as well suits Maguire down to a tee
because that middle centre half really is
the playmaker. The middle one is the one he wants to relax on the ball, try and engage
the other team into a press, come out of their slots and then he wants those lofted balls
in either in behind or to the wide player or wrapped into the six and that's Mogwai's
game in possession. So I think out of possession and in possession as well,
it just suits him down to a tee that's center of a three.
I've actually seen him,
I've actually seen, I watch it in training the other day.
So they go, the three building up,
the center one actually goes a little bit higher
into almost like a six position to make like a triangle,
which then forces the six to go a little bit higher as well.
It's an interesting way to play and listen, it suits him.
You're absolutely right, Paul.
It suits him down to a T this formation.
Paul, Ian, thank you both very much indeed.
Paul Robinson, Ian Dennis at San Mames,
Athletic Bill Bow nil, Manchester United three.
Let's bring you some reaction.
Here's the Manchester United head coach, Ruben Amerin.
There is no goals away, so anything can change. And that is my message to the players and
we have to think about now for Bramford and then for the second leg. Nobody expects this
result. But again, I think you saw two games today, the first 25 minutes and then after
the goal and also with the
sent off the game changed. That was a good thing, also a good thing in the second half
we tried to be cautious, we created chances but the most important thing is that the opponent
didn't get many shots to our goal and that was really important.
and that was really important. Every Friday as we look ahead to the weekend's football action with a few untold stories along the way.
A wasp flew into my mouth while I was talking and I panicked.
The commentators view only on the Football Daily.

On the Football Daily podcast, the debrief with Steve Crossman.
Listen on BBC Sounds.
United more than one foot in the final. How then Ali Brespoor do we describe Tottenham Hotspur after a 3-1 victory of a Bodo Glint?
What a great question Steve. The potential of this all-English Europa League final.
I mean on the face of it, a great night for Tottenham here.
Only a second European semi-final in 40 years for the club.
They've scored three goals, came flying out of the blocks,
got one of those in the first minute.
James Madison, when he was on the field,
was at his effervescent and entertaining best.
But I think given their frailties this season,
the late goal from Ulrich Saltness for Bodo Glimt
definitely infused this stadium tonight
with a little
touch of anxiety. I know the Tottenham fans are going to be feeling that. And I think
it's, it's particularly because they are aware the challenge that faces their team on an
artificial surface north of the Arctic Circle next week, where Bodo Glimt have won 28 of
their last 35 home games in Europe. Really impressive home record. But you know, the
manager, Antposta Coghli, won't entertain any of that sort of negativity. He'll point to
the fact his team showed plenty of attacking threat tonight, scored those
good goals in the first half. Brennan Johnson heading in the first, James
Madison with the superb second. They were a bit slow, were more than a bit slow,
very slow out of the blocks in the second half. Dominic Slanky scored a
brilliant penalty, a brilliantly taken penalty to get the third goal.
But just when it was all going so well, Ulrich Saltenes from nowhere really found space in the box,
his shot deflected in off Rodrigo Bentoncourt and then suddenly just had this little pocket of yellow in the stadium
which exploded with joy. So what I would say is Bodo Glimt have hope, Tottenham have the lead
and it's set up beautifully for next week, unless you're a Tottenham fan I think.
Let's bring Rob Green into the conversation as well with Phil Jones and Andros Townsend and Ali of course,
inside the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. That one goal, it does change the complexion,
but it only changes the complexion because of this infamous home record doesn't it? Yeah, you just sense the whole stadium just change within the blink of an eye
and it was party time, Tottenham having a great time, it was songs were out,
everything was going their way, the big players were playing on the big scene
and performing and then it just started to sip away and then the goal came and
everything has changed by the end of the game it was kind of really muted applause
muted celebration apart from as Ali said in the yellow corner and they know they
know they've got a real chance here and it's the old old adage of don't be
turning up at halftime because that's a horrible team talk. Well, they're two goals up at half time.
And it's going to be a tough one because Anshaposka Koglu,
if he can get his team out,
I think they'll be all right because they can see it through
and they've got enough.
It's whether it does because the drop off is that big from Salanke,
from Madison.
It's just not the same side.
I'm hoping the fact that it's the second leg that spurs after play on the artificial
pitch and not the first leg because spurs now go there with a buffer to goal buffer.
They know what they need to do.
They can sit behind the ball. They showed they can do that against Frank for a need to do. They can sit behind the ball.
They showed they can do that against Frankfurt
a few weeks ago.
They can sit behind the ball.
They can use the pace on the counter attack
like they did tonight.
The front three were unbelievable.
The high line of Bomo Glimp,
and they just kept feeding balls in behind.
They can do that again next week,
but keep men behind the ball
and be wary of that counter attack.
So I don't know if it's wishful thinking but I think it's easier going there in the second leg
rather than the first leg.
Andras, just a question on, it was such a stark difference to the second half than the first and
how they went about it. They almost just sat in and is there any particular reason why Tottenham
would do that because they had such joy in the first half just doing what they were doing.
I just think it's it's fear of what they what the position they're in.
They're in the Europa League semifinal.
They did the same against Frankfurt in the in the second leg last week,
where they were so good in the first half.
And then because they got the lead, they just sat behind the ball and said,
you're not going to score against us. We're going to try and hit you on the counter-attack
and they almost slipped into that a little bit tonight but unfortunately tonight they
didn't score on the counter-attack they had a few chances and they conceded a sucker punch
at the other end which undone them. Ali I suppose two things worth saying one yes it's an artificial
pitch but if teams from Norway didn't use artificial pitches, they wouldn't be able to play in Europe. And two, let's just put
the old wind and rain out of the equation, shall we? I've just looked at the BBC weather
app next Thursday, eight degrees and a gentle breeze in Bodø. I think they'll be able to
cope.
But I think no, I agree, Steve, but it's the surface. And I think, as Rob was saying before
this game tonight, it's not going to be intimidating. Oh, yeah. And I think, as Rob was saying before this game tonight,
it's not going to be intimidating.
You know, I said right at the start of commentary tonight,
honestly, the atmosphere here just before kickoff
was incredible in this stadium tonight.
We're sitting in one of the most impressive stadiums
in world football.
The contrast will be so great next week.
And it's just going to be, I think, the unusual nature of it
and the fact that both of them, you saw the celebrations tonight,
you know, I saw the first leg of their quarterfinal against Lazio, they won it 2-0.
Lazio were top in qualifying in the Europa League group table, that could have been 5-0.
And they get their players back next week, so Patrick Berg, the heart of the team, will be in central midfield.
Evjen, who is a really important player, will be in that midfield as well.
Bjort of the centre back might be back as well.
So, I don't know, I feel bad,
because Tottenham have won 3-1 tonight,
and it sounds like we're being a little bit negative,
but I think I've just probably put myself
in the sort of shoes of a Tottenham fan
and the way they might be thinking about the challenge
that they've got ahead of them.
It looked like they lost Madison and Solanke as well,
so I don't know how those injuries...
Madison looked more serious, I think, but Salanchi didn't seem that bad because he came and sat down
on the bench and was up on the pitch after the game and chatting to people, so there's no real
urgency for treatment there. But there was a real reflection of how the game started as to how the atmosphere was.
The Bodeglum froze. They froze at the start of the game. They just did not know how to react.
You looked at their fans when they walked in the stadium and the show started and it is a show.
And they were just like, wow, this is some spectacle. And Tottenham use that to their advantage.
The tables are turned next week. You're going to welcome to North Norway.
The tables are turned, welcome to our world.
So it's going to be tough.
Great stuff, Rob. Ali, thank you very much indeed.
Right, let's hear from the Tottenham boss.
Here's Andrzej Postokogli.
I thought the players were outstanding today.
I thought our performance was everything it needed to be.
Really well organised and disciplined defensively.
Really calm going forward and creating good opportunities for ourselves and maintaining pressure. Obviously they scored the goal late which doesn't I think reflect our dominance in
the game but if we repeat that performance next week it will be enough for us to get through.
I thought that our supporters were outstanding tonight.
From the moment we walked out and I think they added the energy to the team.
I think even us scoring an early goal came from the fact that as soon as the boys walked
out there was a buzz in the stadium.
It's credit to our fans.
We've obviously had a tough season but the European nights this year have still been
pretty special and they played
their part tonight, a massive role in us performing in the way we needed to. Spurs 3, Bodo Glimt won,
Athletic Bilbao nil, Manchester United 3, an all-English Europa League final looking likely.
In the Conference League, Chelsea being in the final looks highly likely after their
first leg of their semi-final in Sweden, John Southall.
Yep, they beat Jurgaren by four goals to one. As you say, Steve, it was almost a perfect
night for Chelsea and it's very difficult now to see any scenario where they don't make
it to the Conference League final later this month. They were two up at half time with
goals from Jadon Sancho and Nonny Madweke. Enzo Mresco then made a quadruple change at half time. Nicholas Jackson was amongst those substitutes
within 20 minutes. He helped himself to two more goals, first capitalising on a goalkeeping error,
the second a terrific finish with his left foot to make it 4-0 and he is finding form in exactly the
right time. Nicholas Jackson, Almey pulled one back for the home side, Stolm is an absolute sitter to make it 4-2.
And then we could have had a wonderful moment.
It could have been five.
Reggie Walsh on his debut at 16,
denied by Rinna with his very first touch
in professional football.
What a moment that would have been.
But Chelsea, you have to say,
all but guaranteed their place in the final.
I think we can safely say they will be there. And with Forrest losing as well, it has been a really good night in Stockholm
for them.
Thank you very much, John. Yeah, you could certainly argue that the result of the night
for Chelsea wasn't their own win in Sweden. It was Nottingham Forrest nil, Brentford two,
because what that means is Chelsea stay in fifth, which remember is the final Champions
League place, on 60 points. Forrest also have 60 points, but Chelsea's goal difference is
seven better and there are four games to go. Let's get a bit of reaction actually to Forrest
2-0 defeat to Brentford, who are themselves still in contention for Conference League
football. Here's Forrest Bost, Nuno Espirito-Santo with Chris Coles.
Do you feel Nuno that you will have to lift the players at all or do you think the
fight that you are in will be enough to motivate them?
No, we have to lift them. We have to lift them, but more than lift them, let's not
hide ourselves. We have responsibilities and like I said again today we didn't
fulfil the responsibilities that we should have done.
Today we didn't fulfil the responsibilities that we should have done. And Monday, Palace, vital, you get something because teams around you continue to impress,
continue to win?
More than anything when you are in this situation it's not the table, it's not your opponents.
We have to look at ourselves and go back to the basics.
The basics, you've been talking, I don't know how many times you speak in this place about the same thing, how strong we are, how solid we are, how compact we are. Let's work
on that. This is our major concern.
Nuno Espirito Santo. Phil, thank you for showing me that somebody on social media has already
put Harry Maguire's face on Ronaldinho's body.
Brilliant.
Andros, thank you very much. Always great to have you on. Cheers, Andros
Townsend Phil. Thank you. Thank you. Right. That's it for this episode of the Football
Daily Podcast. Big thank you to all of our guests and thank you very much for listening.
It's the scandal that rocked rugby union to its core. The so-called Bloodgate scandal.
Tom Williams now receiving attention.
It seems so clear that this wasn't real blood.
It's out and out cheating.
This is a story of lies and deception, conspiracies and cover-ups.
There was terror that it could tear the house down.
Courtroom drama and secret deals.
So obviously a lie.
And a human cost that changed drama and secret deals. So obviously alive and a human cost
that changed lives and careers forever. Dean Richards is found guilty and banned for three
years. I'm Ross Kemp and this is Sports Strangers Crimes Bloodgate. Listen on BBC Sounds.
