This is the Football Daily podcast with Alastair Bruce Ball.
Hello, welcome to the football.
Daily podcast on this episode. We'll be reflecting on all the latest Premier League results,
including Manchester City's 5-4 win over Fulham at Craven Cottage, where Erling Harlan scored
his 100th Premier League goal. Everton's 1-0 win away to Bournemouth to put them back on track,
and Newcastle being held to a 2-2 draw against Spurs. So joining me for this one, former
England and Manchester City midfielder Izzy Christensen and former Premier League striker
Clinton Morrison. They're both with me here in the studio in Solford and Statman.
Dave is a voice in the ether. Clinton, I can't believe this, right? You and I, we're not
often in Sauffer. We don't often come to Media City to the BBC and we both
arrived here. We're on Statman Dave's turf and he's in London. I can't believe it?
I said, where Stapman Dave? They said, oh, he's there on the screen. I said, are you having a
laugh? I've come to Manchester to see him? But it's one of those things. We can still
see him, can't we? Now, Dave, the question for you is, are you smelling as good tonight as
as Clinton Morrison? Because when I greet it honestly, wow, Clinton smells good this evening.
That's going to be absolutely impossible, but it is. I did.
I thought, look, I thought you guys would be in London, so I came to London, and you're in Manchester, so we just got our wires crossed.
No, do you know what it was that, man, Dave?
I could never leave Izzy out.
I knew Izzy was here, so I had to be up here to see Izzy.
Team player, Clinton.
I could have played with you, you know, a few little assists.
I know.
Do you think we would have been very good to work?
Do you think you're going to work?
Absolutely.
I just score goals.
Well, where else to start the pub than with the nine-goll thriller at Craven Cottage?
Manchester City clung on to beat Fulham 5-4, having been leading 5-1.
Fulham very nearly completing the biggest comeback in Premier League history.
Clinton, Manchester City will obviously be pleased with the win in the end,
moving to within two points of the leader's Arsenal.
But do you think they'll be concerned with how Fulham so nearly got something out of that game?
Most definitely, they will.
Not every game you're going to be up 5-1.
You saw it on the weekend where they were up too new,
and Leeds got it back, and then they ended up equalising.
I mean, yeah, they end up scoring the winner through Field Folding.
So, yeah, there's a problem with them defensively.
I've said it for all season that we know they can score goals.
There's no bother with Man City the way they're going forward.
But defensively, they have to be better.
But Cardio, we say about defensively, he just made a clearance
and helped his team to three points.
Come the end of the season, that could be a big three points, Ali,
they're talking about.
But they need to be better defensively.
You would never see an Arsenal team be 5'1 up
and can see that much goals.
So they need to get that sorted out.
So maybe if they've got a bit of money in January,
maybe look to strengthening those.
Strengthening at the back.
Especially in the right fallback area as well
I think Nunes is a good player
but I don't think he's a natural defender
I still feel like someone like
I know he's getting old and on in age
but Carl Walker losing him I think was a big blow
I know he's not the same player that he was
but you need a natural fallback
and that is why they were interested in Livermento
that would be a great signing
but Newcastle ain't letting him go out of this
no chance no chance
it's the beauty as well as he
isn't it of this congested fixture list
sort of tired players, squad rotation,
games coming thick and fast,
it does tend to throw up games like that.
And if you've been to that game tonight,
I mean, if you're a young kid
and you've gone to see your first game of Premier League football,
and it's that, you're going to be hooked for life, aren't you?
Yeah, but then how does the rest of your fan career look
when you don't get a five-four every week?
Disappointment, no.
It was, I agree with Clinton.
I think there's two ways to define whether a team is a title challenger.
It's the points tally of where they are at,
and it's also what you see in terms of like
we look to that and go Man City defensively
they know I mean
watching the pictures of Pep Guardiola
walking off the pitch at Craven Cottage and he knows it
he knows it defensively
my word they need to tidy up and I think
you're looking at it they're playing on the counter attack
a lot in the second half and they're not
they're losing the ball and you look at Man City
title winning sides they transition out of defensive
situations and they keep the ball
and I think that's the difference they just kept
giving the opposition the incentive to go back and attack them
I was going to say, just to the naked eye watching the late breaks there.
I mean, Harlan is almost in a couple of times with those screaming runs in the halfway line,
but it's that pass that gets cut out.
And you're right, exactly that.
Suddenly, Fulham a back at them.
Yeah.
Yeah, Dave, anything from post-match.
I think that approach, kind of just looking at the possession stats, Alley, in that second half.
City had 34% of the ball.
This is not the first time that we've seen cities sit off.
You know, the Manchester Derby, obviously, Manchester United were very poor that day.
34, Dave.
34% of the ball in the second half, full of had 66% possession.
Overall in the game, Man City just had 43% of the ball.
Obviously, they were so good in the first half.
But that control, I think what we've all spoke about is what they're missing at the moment,
that defensive midfield position, I think, as much as Nico Gonzalez has shown quality
in certain games this season, obviously it was brought off.
There isn't someone at the moment that can kind of calm things down for Manchester City.
Players like Bernardo Silver that used to take the games in these moments and slow it down,
beat a few people in the dribble, retain possession.
They just don't have that this season city.
So it's going to be so tough for them to face an Arsenal team
or to catch an Arsenal team that looks so good in possession.
Must remember as well, Erling Harlands hit the 100 Premier League goal mark.
Quickest striker ever to do that.
Rolling it all the way back to when Manchester City signed him,
we knew he was going to have an impact.
Did you think he would be?
as good as he's been, as devastating as he's been?
I think as devastating as he's been, no.
But then you looked at how he played and what he did at Dortmund
and you go, I mean, this guy's got incredible potential.
And I think that, you know, even the seasons or the goal droughts
where people have doubted him, he's still come through.
And, you know, the impact that he has in that team is just incredible.
And his goals, I mean, his finishing ability is outrageous.
and his aerial ability outrageous
I mean he's such an athlete
and I think behind the scenes
the club will work so hard
to get him fit and keep him fit
and I think that's the most important thing
is keeping fit
and his output is
you know
I don't need to say anything
and do I'm a joke
hypotheticals
they're so tricky
but do you think
because you know
and I don't want to turn it
into a strict comparison
between the two players
but before they were looking at Harlem
they were looking at Harry Kane
if Harry Kane gets the service
that Harlan gets
Do you think he gets to 100 goals just as quickly?
Yeah.
Yeah.
I think Harry Kane's unbelievable in front of a goal.
Yeah.
I mean, on par.
Harland is on par with Harry Kane
in terms of finishing ability, 1v1.
Yeah, I agree.
I think the only thing that I would say
Harlan can do differently to Harry Kane
is when the cross is coming to the box
every time he looks like he's going to score with his head.
So that's the only difference.
But I agree with it, is he?
But then I think Harry Kane's a bear all-round footballer
where he drops into little pockets than Harlan.
So that's a great debate.
You did throw a little curveboard there, Al.
No, well, I'm going to chuck another one in.
That's what you're here for.
I like that.
I'd rather someone ask me good questions like that.
Alastaird.
But, okay, and I think I have heard someone ask this,
and I'm not sure well already this season,
but if you were putting a dream team together
and you were only allowed one at the moment of Harland.
I knew he's going to say that.
Here we go.
Harland and Bapé or Kane.
Is that impossible?
Is that just, you know?
No, it's not impossible.
Listen.
Who'd you go for them?
If I was a manager,
and I had a chairman.
I'd be saying, Chairman, let's get all three of them, but you can't.
But you can't.
My Dave's loving that.
I don't get.
I just attack.
You couldn't.
You couldn't play those three together, Clinton.
I'm probably sure I could.
You couldn't.
And Bapet and a little ten behind the two at front.
And the rest just defend because they'll win me the game then three.
Nah, oh, that is a tough one.
Oh, my.
You know what?
I'd probably just go.
It's too hard.
I know.
If it's for one season, I'm going Harry Kane.
If it's for three seasons, two three seasons, it's Earl and Harlan.
Okay.
For me.
So Mbapé doesn't get into either of those.
No.
Not for me.
My personal preference, not for me.
Bapé.
Still rate him, but...
Yeah, I'd have to...
Oh, that's a good...
Okay.
It's too hot.
I want all three of them.
I know you do.
I need it, but I'm not allowing you all three of them.
That would just be, you know...
What's the fun in that?
If I had to pick one for now, I think...
Oh, no.
He can't do it.
He can't do it.
I like Mbapé.
He's come of age for around Madrid.
I think he's outstanding.
and I'll probably go, Harry Kane now.
Hurricane now.
And Harland, yeah.
On a long term.
And then Beppe doesn't get a looking.
Dave, you're agreeing with Izzy, are you?
Yeah, I think Harry Kane this season
directly involved in 27 goals
and just 20 matches for by Munich.
I think at the moment with what he's doing,
dropping off, the involvement in the play, it's Harry Kane.
Well, speaking of Harlan, let's hear from him now.
And here he is with Match of the Day, Steve Bauer.
Erling, well done.
A landmark night for you, but a crazy night.
What on earth was that like to play in?
chaotic as well for me nine goals in the game is too much and I think if you sit home watching this game
or it should be much of the day as you just said you know because it's it was a crazy game
what were you thinking at 5-1 I thought of scoring the 6 like I always do and I think at 5-2 I was
no 5-2 or 5 3 I was close scoring 6 3 and then minute after
after they go and score.
So that's football, that's a beauty of football
and that's why we love the game.
Listen, everyone will remember it for a crazy game
and a city win, but also for an incredible landmark night
for you, 100 Premier League goals,
the fastest by some distance.
What does that mean to you?
Of course, proud moment.
100 club is a huge thing and to do it this quickly
is amazing and I'm proud, I'm happy and super proud.
Just 111 games, because you have dreamt of numbers like that
when you first signed.
No.
I mean, they are incredible numbers,
All right, to do it at this level.
I know.
What should I say?
I know.
Everyone knows.
And again, I said it many times before.
Strike of a city should score a lot of goals.
And that's my job.
That's what I tried to do.
And yeah, I'm not bad at it.
Very modest.
On another night, you could have had a hat trick tonight,
couldn't you?
When he hit the woodwork twice?
I should have had a hat trick.
I had a few chances.
So yeah, need the practice.
Another 100 in you?
Why not?
Well then tonight, big smile.
Thank you.
Right, let's hear from the Manchester City manager then.
Here's Pep Guardiola with Match of the Days, Steve Bauer.
Pep, in your long, successful career.
Have you ever been involved in a game like that?
No.
Where?
Barcelona.
And what was the result?
We're losing 03 and we won for 3.
In a semi-final, the Cup there,
in the Atlantic of Madrid.
Yeah, quite similar.
Okay, so that was your team with the comeback.
What about the other way around tonight when they got back to 5-4?
Yeah, they don't respect.
I'm so old, and the players don't respect me.
They don't have to treat the manager in that way, so to be honest.
Only happen in that league.
We play a fantastic...
Listen, I know what's going to happen in the feeling,
but they take incredible positive things that what we have done.
Come here and score five goals against that team
in the way we play in the first half and everything.
but after 5-2, one team is nothing to lose
and we started to think, oh, what happened, you know, in that position?
And we could make the 6-3 and after one second we make a 5-4.
And they push with the people in the Premier League and it's no more happened.
At the end, it's a question of character, resilience, defend and do what they have to do.
Izzy, you're never quite sure what you're going to get with post-match.
Sometimes you think he's going to be fuming and raging about the defense.
offensive errors and there tonight he was quite
playful and you know trying to take
all the positive I mean do you think that will be the same
message behind closed doors to the players as well
yeah I think it's probably at a point now in that
Manchester City change room where Pep Guardiola probably doesn't
need to say much after a result like that
in the capacity in which they gave Fulham the opportunity
to get back into the game I think he probably needs to
walk into that dressing room maybe even just look at the players
a bit of that feeling it had
head teacher walks into an assembly hall and you're thinking
oh God, I think that probably would have done enough
and it's good to see he finds,
well, I'll say the funny side of it,
he's got a bit of humour about him in the interview.
Do you, I mean, have we learned anything?
I don't, we have learned anything new about them?
Have we Clinton this season?
No, not really.
We look at them.
Maybe we've learnt defensively not as good
and they miss Rodgerie massively.
We keep alluding to that.
But what do you want,
I think he's come out and handled it brilliant.
He's not going to come out and, you know,
moan about his team.
He's just going to say, yeah, I've had performances like that.
then and obviously they're not ageing me
they're making me feel stressed and worried
on the touchline but that's part of management
but his team got the three points and first
and foremost that's what he'll be happy about
it's not worth being critical in the moment
after the game but yeah good good free points
for Mantey. Dave anything stand out
from you? Yeah I think the big thing about round Dona rumour
in his form 58% save percentage
is the third worst of any keeper in the league
if you look at James Trafford's numbers this season
he's saved 80% of the shots he's faced
I think that conversation has got to come up again
with James Trafford especially with
England in the summer.
Yeah, but Pep's not going to put Trafford in for Donoruma, is he?
But you look at the form, Ali.
It's similar to Bay and Deer in terms of numbers.
And Bay and Deer really held Manchester United back at the start of this season in terms of
not saving things that you'd expect.
What it reminds me of from Manchester City is maybe Claudio Bravo, not at that same
level, but there were shots today that Donoruma potentially could have done better.
And obviously, not a goalkeeper, I can't judge that, but the data is not good.
So, Fulham 4, Manchester City 5.
Everton, meanwhile, having lost 4-1 at home to Newcastle on the weekend,
beat Bournemouth away 1-0.
I'm reading one of the stats here.
Bournemouth limited to only four shots tonight.
That sounds like a classic David Moyes.
Right, let's sort it.
Let's get back to basics.
Yeah, let's not give him any chances and see if we can Nick one.
Yeah, he probably would have gone there and said,
looking how the game was, it would probably have took the point
because, you know, Bournemouth is a hard place to go.
But to get the goal, the deflected goal from Jack Grilish is positive.
But you know what, when you play against David Moy's teams,
he's always going to make it hard to beat.
He's never going to come out on the front foot
and try and have a go.
It would be hard to beat and play on the counterattack.
And listen, Tarkoski and Keene have been outstanding.
And Pickford throw that into the mix.
And they've defended well and come away with, you know, three points.
And they just, you know, the Newcastle ones are an off night
because in between that, they've gone and won at Old Trafford with ten men.
You know, one of the players obviously gets sent off for slapping his own man.
And then one at Bournemouth tonight,
which is weirdly inconsistent.
It just makes it feel more and more that that Newcast defeat was just one of those.
You know, go a goal down within the first minute, never recover bad night at the office.
Yeah, bad night at the office is definitely the way to label it.
I think that Everton, you know, it is very Everton-like to be inconsistent.
And I think, you know, you feel it, you know, the atmosphere in their new, well, the atmosphere at Goodersen Park, incredible.
The atmosphere at the new stadium electric.
And I think that at home, you expect them to be way more competitive than they were against Newcastle at the weekend.
but it's a terrific result bouncing back
and going down to Bournemouth today
and getting the three points
they'll be delighted with that
Are you too worried about Bournemouth?
I'm not worried about them in a relegation
but I'm worried about them
that they're going down the table
rapidly at the moment
for the great start they made
and everyone was talking about
the start they made
but as I said they've lost a few players
through injuries and through suspension
Senesi was out through suspension
and Brooks in particular this evening
so I haven't missed them kind of players
but yeah it's a bit
they're on a difficult run at the moment
but I think when some men
It feels like ever since that talk from
that people are talking about Semenio
and he may be leaving in January,
Bournemouth's dipping form and so as Semenya had
dipping form. Hopefully when he gets back, the team
will get back to flying again.
Cliverts not had the season that he had.
I know there's been a bit of injury sort of
that's been their biggest problem. He's only just
come back and he makes a great point, Ali.
Clive's exceptional. He can score spectacular
goals and he's being
in bits and pieces this season.
They need to get, Borma for not a team
that can afford to have injuries or suspension
So let's hear some reaction.
Here's Everton boss David Moyes
speaking to match of the day's Jonathan Pearce.
That's an excellent win for you, isn't it?
It was an excellent win for us
because it's not really been a happy hunting ground
I think for Everton in recent games in history.
So Bournemouth have been doing really well this year.
We might have just caught them at the right time.
They just had a couple of injuries and suspensions,
but so did we.
So it was going to be a difficult game.
I thought the game was pretty tight
and maybe whoever got the first goal was going to win it.
but generally really pleased that we got the three points.
You had an excellent performance, though, didn't you?
Garner feeling in it right back he's played there before,
but the two centrebats, Juesbury Hall, all excellent.
I thought Jimmy Garner done a great job against Samado,
who's in top form and is a top player at the moment.
And also, Kear and Dewsbury Hall's been playing ever so well in midfield.
And I thought tonight he might have just been the difference at times for us,
done a little bit more, had to play a little bit deeper tonight
because we're missing some midfield players.
so so pleased with them
we've won three out the last four
we had a disappointing defeat at the weekend
but the players have bounced back well
and kept a few clean sheets as well which is always important
crowd love Jack Greenwich don't they
oh they certainly do they love Jack
and it's great because Everton over
over the real years had big stars
and people who could carry off
Jack Gillish is certainly a top player
and it's continued to show it
I want them to get more goals
he's got a goal tonight
I don't know if he'll go as an own goal
I hope not because I hope that he's shots on target
but I want to score more
I want to make more assists
but he's made a big difference
and yeah he's loved here by everybody
that was David Moyes
let's hear from Bournemouth boss
Andoni Iriola
now with Jonathan Pearce
Well not your day
and Form's not going your way
is at the moment
No no definitely
I think it has been a very poor game
from our side
I think we've been bad on the ball.
Our build-up hasn't been good today.
And once you are not good on the ball,
also you will look worse without the ball.
I think the game has gone on the roots that Everton wanted,
not a lot of rhythm, quite slow,
not big chances for any of the teams.
I was expecting we were conceding set pieces
and it was dangerous
and it was not happening a lot of things.
but definitely disappointed with the performance
I think the result is bad
but we haven't been
with lacked energy
and also on the ball
I think we've been not good enough
It was a sort of game that was heading for
nil-nil, wasn't it? It was a cruel piece
of luck for the deflection
Yes, there were not happening a lot of things
but it's probably the game that we don't want to play
I think we should have been
much more aggressive on the ball
and without the ball
and they scored one goal
but I think they were controlling the game more than us
the game could have finished nil-nil
but it was not the game we wanted to play
The points were shared between Newcastle and Tottenham
that one finishing 2-2
Jonathan Woodgate was at St James's Park for the game
What specifically do you think from that performance?
I mean, is it everything that needs to be improved?
There was something in particular that struck you tonight with spurs
that just wasn't working.
Yeah, I just think with the style of it,
I just thought they were going a lot really, really direct into the front players.
And the wine, he couldn't really hold the ball up
because that big Dan Byrwin was just coming over the top of him.
And then when they were playing, Newcastle were just jumping on them
and taking the ball off spurs.
And Thomas Frank, to be fair, he looked really frustrated on the sideline
Because what he was trying to get across to his players
They didn't look like they could do it
But they are good footballers, that's what I mean
The Spurs players, they're good players
But they just didn't produce tonight
Yeah
Next up actually for Spurs Clinton
Is Brentford is Thomas Frank's old club
They're at home
Spurs, yeah Spurs are at home
Which pressure
Which brings the pressure against his old club
Their players don't like playing at home at a minute
You know what the fans are like
They'll be on to them
And there will be pressure
And you know what Keith Andrew is going to do
his set piece of long throws
he'll cause them
all kinds of problems
yeah that's a fascinating
game on the weekend
Romero's got hard
hasn't he is
I mean I know we've said that before
and he gets involved
in some things he doesn't need to
but actually you know
he's scored two goals tonight
he's really dug Tottenham out of a hole there
yeah he had the arm band on tonight
and yeah he showed up
came up clutch for his team
interesting when he scored the first goal
he imitated Bruno Jimrose's celebration
for his first goal
and then Romero then gets his second goal
and he's done the same
and then just watching those TV pictures
there's a little bit of afters between those two.
I think Jimrez,
maybe he didn't like that.
He didn't like it.
And Joe Linton got in the middle of them
and Charleston came over.
There's a bit of Brazil Argentina going on there.
Dave?
Just in terms of Christian Romero
in the last three seasons,
he's now scored eight goals in the Premier League.
In terms of defenders,
only Gvardiole has managed more.
So he's got the same amount of goals
in the last three seasons.
Gabriel, at Arsenal,
we all speak about being as such a threat from set pieces.
And what about,
What do we make of Newcastle then this evening?
I think it was six wins in a row at home before that.
They'll be kicking themselves.
No, they'll be frustrated.
You can see Eddie Howe's body language in his face at the end of the game.
He'll be disappointed because they've been the better team.
If they weren't a better team and didn't dominate as much as they did tonight,
then it'd be saying it and they scored that late.
They're saying happy with a point.
But as we saw with the game on head, they were by far the better team.
It'll be Thomas Frank, the one that would be going back down the road
with a big smile on his face and saying we got away.
You know why he got away with one, Thomas Frank?
Because when you're under a bit of pressure,
play your best team.
You rested Mickey Van de Venn, one of your best defenders.
That makes no sense to me.
Play your best team.
You don't need to rest.
And what you're resting?
Unless he's in the red zone, as they say.
Oh, that red zone.
That would fit with your outfit tonight.
Glinted is proper bright red.
I am red, yeah, I knew.
I went, yeah.
Well, you know, in the red zone.
You are in the red zone.
I was in the red zone.
Yeah, I've never been in the red zone.
Eating those chicken wings and them chips.
I weren't in no red zone.
zone now. I've never been in a red zone. I don't run around
enough to me.
Jonathan, in terms of that Newcastle
performance, you know, sort of
final summation on what you thought of them this evening?
Yeah, I thought they were decent. I thought
they were very good when Bruno came on,
like really good. I thought Bruno
really dictated play and started
really getting hold of the game because of the first 20
minutes, it was a bit, it was a bit
scrappy, but then second half and Bruno
got on he started to really dictate play. He's a
fantastic player and I thought he was the player
who made it even
even better for Newcastle going forward.
Yeah.
And Jonathan Spurs will argue, weren't they?
Once, I mean, you can watch all the highlights on match the day tomorrow,
that the penalty that was given against them to put Newcastle in front,
despite Newcastle's domination and we're saying they deserve to win the game.
They probably got a bit lucky with that penalty that it was given.
Yeah, I thought they were hard done by it, to be honestly.
I didn't think that was a penalty.
I didn't think it was a penalty at all.
I thought it was a bit of Dan Byrne, to be honest with you.
And he just climbed all over him.
Like I said, in commentary, it was a bit like a head.
heavyweight UFC wrestler against the welter weight
and he's just all over him and he can't move.
That's how it was like.
And Dan Bairns, he's a big unit, isn't he?
And he's hard to move out the way.
So I don't know what Ben Tang Kirk can do to actually get out of the way.
Okay, body position in the first place wasn't great.
But it's not easy to get out of the way of Dan Byrne.
And at the weekend, they're at home to Burnley.
You'd expect Newcastle to win that.
It's a big one next week, Jonathan, I think Champions League,
because they're away to Leverkusen,
who last time out beat Manchester City.
and then in January, Newcastle have still got to play PSV
and their final games away to PSG.
So that game away to Lavercouz
and feels like a big one to me for Newcastle.
Yeah, big game, but you know, Eddie,
I was like you'd be looking at the next game
and that is Burnley.
But I think the Burnley game would be a tough game
just because they're expected to beat them.
They're expected to beat Bernie.
So that's what I mean,
and the fans will become here full of expectation,
thinking they can win the game
and run over the top of Burnley.
I think there'll be a difficult game.
Let's get some reaction then.
Spurs boss, Thomas Frank, with Match of the Days, Guy Mowbray.
Well, Thomas, it's hard to know where to start.
Let's start at the end and the recovery, the double recovery of your team.
I just must say I love the mentality of the team of the players after a very tough week.
This is a fourth game in 10 days.
We're going here to St. James Park against the good Newcastle team.
Where I think we suffered the first 25.
And everyone knows you need to probably do that.
last 60 I really like that
I think that was a good performance last 60
and the way the team handles setbacks
two setbacks when it's tough
I think shows a lot about the character in the team
and the players which I absolutely love
and I think the biggest
setback was for me there's never
a penalty
on their penalty
we want the ref calls on the pitch
to support that and it can only be a clear and obvious
mistake that's never a never a penit
my opinion. Then there's 10 per game. I actually think there's a pin on Romeo before his bicycle
kick. But besides that, what a compact. So very happy with that. Happy with our fans. I think they
travel in 3,000s. We could hear them throughout the game. The way also we could hear them singing
Vic's name. So they were superb. Would you say it was a courageous performance?
Yeah, I think, yeah, definitely. I like that.
that we, you know, sometimes you need to suffer.
And after that, I think we were very brave.
I think we were going forward, very calm on the ball
when we had to be calm on the ball.
A lot, a lot about the performance.
That was Thomas Frank.
Here's Eddie Howe with Guy Mowbray.
Eddie, I imagine that.
It's a really frustrating ending for you.
Yeah, hugely frustrating because I think we worked really,
really hard to get ourselves in that position.
We were knocking on the door during the first half.
the goal finally came
and then we didn't protect the lead well enough
on two occasions
and their corner at the end is hugely disappointing.
How did that happen?
Have you had a chance to have a proper look at it yet?
No, that would be one that we have to analyse,
go away and figure it out
but ultimately we haven't defended a corner well enough
so that comes from doing our jobs individually
not getting a really strong first contact
on that first ball that comes into the box
and yes, a painful way to win the game.
What about the overall performance?
How would you assess how you assess
how your team did tonight.
Yeah, good without being exceptional.
I thought we were strong.
I thought we were the better team.
Created the majority of the chances.
Weren't clinical enough.
And as I said, it probably took too long for us to score today.
But, yeah, and then, of course, the defending aspect,
we weren't clinical enough either in our own box.
My name's Steve Bradnell, a sister manager of Royal Oak.
You may have seen me online with viral.
Vinyl sensation.
And now the BBC have given me the chance
to set the footballing world banter rights.
This could be a great opportunity for us, lads,
a podcast for the BBC.
Can I just say, what's the podcast?
Brilliant.
Great start.
Well done, Bob.
Brilliant.
We could completely show utter transparency
to Royal Oak fans.
I'll use my charm.
Gift at Gab.
Games gone.

This is the Football Daily podcast with Alastair Bruce Ball.
So is he, Christensen, Clinton Morrison and Statman Dave, all still with us.
Wednesday night's fixtures in the Premier League.
The 730 kickoffs, Brighton against Villa, Burnley Crystal Palace, Wolves take on Forrest
and the leader's Arsenal host Brentford, and at 815, it's Leeds, Chelsea and Liverpool, Sunderland.
As the former Crystal Palace striker,
what did you make of Oliver Glasner's comments?
Because he's come out for the first time now,
talking about the summer transfer business
and how he clearly wasn't happy
that enough wasn't done in the summer
because he felt they were going to run into problems
like they have right now.
Yeah, he was frustrated.
And he did say to the chairman in the summer,
we need more bodies through the door
because he thought he was going to lose Mark Gehue.
And then he stamped his feet
and basically said that he didn't want Mark Gayi,
and there was a lot of talk if Mark Gayi left,
he was going to leave the football club
and Palace can't do that.
He's been their most successful manager.
I think he's been outstanding since he's gone in there.
And he's frustrated.
Saar gets injured on the weekend.
He looks like he's going to be out now.
And then he goes to the Afcon as well.
Well, I think I read something today that he might not go,
possibly might not go to Afcon now because of the injury.
Which from the Crystal Palace point of view, they probably say, yeah,
they're happy with it.
Depending on the severity of the injury, yeah.
But he could be out for that long period that he would have probably have been at the Afcon.
So it's a huge blow.
And he says, we need players in January.
They do.
Pallas caused Man United
all kinds of problems in that first half
but missed too many big chances
and that's the problem
happened at Strasbourg in midweek
in the Europa Conference and they're missing
big chances he said he needs more bodies
and the thing with Glasna he don't rotate Ali
he plays the same team week in week out
and it's going to catch up with Palace come
during like the second half of the season
it's going to catch out with them big time
it'd be fascinating is he to be a fly on the wall
because obviously he has had those conversations
privately but clearly felt moved
at the weekend and was so frustrated
to that defeat where they were on top, weren't there, against
Manchester United, as Clinton says, didn't take the chances
and eventually got beaten. And he did
that little image of, you know,
the zipping up the mouth, I've been quiet about it for so long,
I can't keep quite any longer. I wonder what
the ownership will make of that.
Because they know how he feels privately, but
the fact that he's taken that into the public domain.
I liked it.
I liked it a lot. And the reason I say
that is because I think
he's got so much credit in the bank
to be able to do that, to sort of
send a message to the board publicly. He's not
doing it privately. He's doing it publicly to say, I need support here. He, like Clinton said,
he doesn't make too many changes to a starting 11. I think also is a message in itself this
season in particular when they're playing midweek in Europe. And then obviously back-to-back
Premier League games and the games are just thick and fast. And I think it's also, I also think
if I'm a player in that Crystal Palace dressing room, I think you like it that your manager is willing
to challenge that in the public eye because he's also backing the squad. Because as a player in that
squad, you're going, well, we've just won the FA Cup, you know, we've had our best
season, we're flying, if you add numbers to that squad, numbers who can start and provide
that squad depth of competition in the team, it gives Oliver Glasner the ability to rotate
without performance levels dropping and the ability to win football matches. And who knows,
you know, off the back of the game against Manchester United at the weekend, would they have
won that game if they had more squad depth? Yeah. Dave, I don't know if you've got the numbers
to tell me this, but is he the most
rotation free, what a dreadful phrase that is,
rotation free manager, the manager that
rotates the least. He's definitely
not rotated in Europe this season.
You only tend to see the central midfield
be rotated and I think that's a big
problem with the system given how
much running wingbacks do. They're always going to
be top of the pile in terms of sprints in terms
of distance covered. And just looking at their
spending, they made a profit in the summer
for a team that won their most, you know,
the biggest trophy in years,
as well as having such a bounce as a football club.
You're thinking Pino was signed for 30 million euros
was their biggest outgoing.
Clinton,
do you think there's anything in Dougie Friedman
leaving the club last season
and then maybe not planning as well as the previous have done?
Yeah, to lose Dougie Freeman, I think, yeah, that's a huge loss.
He brought in players like Michael, Elise, all these players
and they improved on the palace and they've gone on to bigger
and better clubs than are doing fantastically well.
But I think losing Dougie because he went out to the Saudi,
the Saudi League, then that's a huge blow.
I was just thinking as well, Dave,
in terms of the African Cup of Nations,
different clubs are going to be affected by that in different ways.
Manchester City, that will be 8 Nouri and Marmush.
I was just thinking today, Manchester United
are going to be really affected by that,
aren't they, in terms of Mbumo and Ahmed,
disappearing off to the African Incubonations.
Yeah, that's going to be a humongous blow.
I think it's been Manchester United's best part of their team this season,
have been the right-hand side.
and Bumo in terms of goals and assists
and start of last season,
only Harlem and Sala have managed more,
obviously for United is their top score of this season.
But when United play well is when Amad is on the ball,
is when Amad is making things happen from right wingback,
and you start to see a little bit of what Ruben Amrins' vision is long term.
But in terms of goals and assists, you know,
14 last season for Ahmad, he started this season as well.
And losing those two players is a humongous worry for Manchester United.
Could potentially see a young player emerge,
Lacey's been on the bench a few times, really exciting young winger.
Missed a lot of the last few seasons, Allie, with injury, different injuries that he's picked up.
But in a way, it reminds me a lot of Phil Foden, his close touches, his control.
He moves a little bit like Phil Foden.
And obviously, if he can have a career like Phil Foden as that at Manchester City,
that would be unbelievable for Manchester United.
But there was a lot of talk about Shay Lacey when he was 15 years old.
Now at 18, this is kind of the time where hopefully we'll start to see him in the first team.
By the way, this is totally unrelated to football.
and sport in general.
Are you guys all on,
do you still do Advent calendars
or not in December?
No.
Do you not?
Dave?
Nope.
My kids are older now.
Yeah.
And 19 and 18.
Okay, so I've got a 17 year on a 13 year old
and they're still on the Advent calendars
and the 13 year old Rory had his mate round last night
who'd got hold of his advent calendar
before December the 1st
and eaten the lot.
What?
So every single chocolate gone
before the month had even
He wouldn't be getting another one.
No, exactly.
that's what I said, yeah.
That's very mischievous.
Yeah, that's something.
Bad.
Yeah, exactly.
Okay, two questions for you all,
quick-fire answers.
So first and foremost,
Arsenal at home against Bremford,
so City have closed the gap to two points.
Will Arsenal beat Bremford tomorrow?
Yes.
Yeah, yeah.
Yes.
Okay.
Will Mo Salas start for Liverpool
home against Sunderland?
Yes.
Yeah, I already spoke,
I was my friend about it, yes.
Who have you spoken to?
He's a big Liverpool fan, and I said, well, Mosella, and he thinks he'll start him.
Oh, I thought you were giving us inside info.
No, no, no, no, no, no more.
I'd love to know him, but I don't know him.
No, no, I don't know anyone inside Liverpool.
I'm going to go, yes, because of the rotation that Liverpool can you do with their attack is.
Yeah, that's why, that's why I think.
Yeah, and that's why, actually, just to finish, it's worked quite well, I think, for on a slot there, hasn't it?
So he had a chance to take him out, and he's not been in brilliant form, has he Mo Salah, but they won the game, but now because of the, you know, the fixtures coming.
I've got a question for you, look, before we go.
Go on.
Will Liverpool win?
What, beats Sunderland at Amfield tomorrow night?
Yeah.
God, I'm going to let Izzy go first on that one.
Yes, close but yes.
Okay.
Dave.
I'm going to go for a Sondland win.
Oh, I know.
Says the Manchester United Fair.
I will go.
I'm going to go draw.
Love it.
I'm going to go draw.
Absolutely.
Right, that's it for this episode of the Football Daily podcast.
Thank you very much to.
Izzy Clinton, Statman and Jonathan Woodgate for joining us
and thank you very much for listening.

Hello.
Readers be cheerful. England's fast bowlers blitzed, Australian in the first innings.
Stokes, Fife. Harrybrook, Olipoke, Ben Duckett looked great at the crease.
Carson Ackinson getting some runs. There's stuff going on there.
Having said that, I think we're in the...
driving seat, you know.
Uh, yeah.
There's only one thing that Ben Stokes can do to answer everyone's issues,
and that is win the second test.
That's it, isn't it?
