This is the Football Daily podcast with Mark Chapman.
Hello, welcome to the Football Daily.
Connor Cody, Steph Horton and Stephen Warnock are with us.
This is how the Premier League table looks after Wednesday's results.
Arsenal have 33.
They're five points clear of Manchester City, you have 28.
Aston Villa third this evening with 27.
Chelsea, nine off Arsenal at the top of the table with 24.
Palace are in fifth after their win at Burnley.
They have 23.
Sundland have 23.
Brighton.
have 22, Liverpool have 22, Manchester United 21, Everton 21, Tottenham 19, Newcastle 19,
Brentford 19, Bournemouth 19, Fulham have 17, Forest have 15, Leeds 14, the bottom three. West Ham
with 11, Burnley with 10, Wolves with two. West Ham have to win at Old Trafford to give themselves
a chance of getting out of that relegations and they have to win
by two, actually, to get themselves out to the relegation zone.
If Manchester United winner, Old Trafford,
they'd go level with Chelsea on 24 points.
What a ridiculous season.
It's mental when you're moving out like that, yeah.
Considering the Stichmann United get,
and they can win tomorrow at home to West Hamon go level with Chelsea,
and we're all telling everybody that Chelsea have on a fantastic seat.
It's madness, it's absolute madness, but it always isn't.
It's why we love football, isn't it?
But going back to the Leeds game here,
You can have bogey teams, can't you?
And I think Leeds are Enzo's bogey team, aren't he?
Doesn't beat them, yes, is he?
No, he always seems to struggle against him.
And you do have them.
Is that the performance of the night for you?
I thought we were fantastic.
I thought you were fantastic.
I really did.
I thought from the very first whistle we had on the telly,
and obviously Steve was watching it behind him.
I just thought the intensity they played that,
it just resembled a lead's performance for me.
I thought they were brilliant.
I think it's a big result for him, Daniel Farca.
A huge result.
One winning eight they have before going into this game.
I think the second half against City gave them a bit of a different belief.
I think that performance in the second half allowed them to come out the trap so quick
and put in a huge performance.
But I don't know whether he'd have lost his job if they'd have lost this game.
But I think there'd have been a lot of people calling for his head because I was at the villa game.
There was a guy who got onto the pitch, got down into the dugout, questioning his decisions.
A lot of the fans were dismayed about some of the changes that he made.
but this
Or changes that he didn't make as well
yeah
but the last game and a half
could change lead to season
with that new system
that belief
and they look a completely different team
they look like a team now
that looks more organised
more compact
but also carries a threat going forward
which is what you've got to have
in the Premier League
the worst things for fans are though
if you're doing the same thing
over and over again
and you're not seeing any change
absolutely
so I think for me now
the ability to be a bit more
adaptable in fact try and find a solution and it's actually proved well over the last two games even though
they got beat off city last minute but in terms of performance and getting more out of your players
and their strengths it worked and you see tonight like the fans are going to admire that because actually
you've been brave enough to go okay we're in the premier league I'm going to actually adapt and try
and change something and make something happen rather than just go okay I think this is my philosophy
these are the players that I really trust in you've actually like got the fans on board a little bit more
and time will tell over the next few weeks
whether they can kind of keep going
with this momentum and also trying to get the three points
but don't underestimate how massive that game is
for Leeds with all the results that have gone their way.
The atmosphere at the stadium,
how do you get the atmosphere up in the stadium?
You play balls forward quickly.
They did that tonight, lifted the stadium,
lifted the crowd.
Often when you have a team that passes it around the back
and they don't go anywhere,
the crowd get bored.
They sit there and they're like,
what are we going to cheer about here?
What are we going to get going for?
suddenly you start creating chances
challenges going in
change the atmosphere within the stadium
if you've got to utilise that use it to your strength
what I always look at with teams down there as well
Steve I don't know if you're the same
what they've got going forward
firepower going forward
players you can score goals them to the top of the pitch
a handful a real real handful
and you compare them to kind of the other team down there
I know West Ham of Callum Wilson
but you look at Bernley you look at Wolves
did they score many goals them two will score goals
them two will be a handful for any team
and them two up front I think tonight
are going to be a massive
apart and how lead to do this
is. They've got to wrap Dominic Calvert Loon up
though and they've got to protect him. Here's Daniel
Farke. For nights like this, we were so
desperate to bring this club back to the top level
and yeah, Ellen Road was tonight back
to their best. Also a great
shift of my lads, great performance
and against one of the best sides
in the world. They won the World Cup
in the summer there, one of the contenders
for the title in the Premier League and then
to win this game, also in this
manner and I would also say deserved
by chances, expected goal.
short shots on target set
pieces so overall of course they had more
possession and I would have preferred to control
at times the game a bit more but overall
a well deserve win and compliments
to the lead. There will be so
much attention on the Liverpool side of
things at Anfield but Dion alongside
Mike Maynate it's probably important
to recognise Sunderland first of all
yeah they played really well tonight the organisation
they changed to a back five
for the start of the game
that was to contain Liverpool and
the wide play that in the first
half never really happened anyway.
They didn't need to worry about.
But in the second half, they saw their chances.
They were a little more reserved in the second half than the first,
but on the break, they looked sharp.
They took their opportunity through Talby.
They hit the woodwork in the first half with Trey Hume's effort
going through Allison's hands.
They could have won it at the end with Wilson, Isidore.
In a clever little bit of move, knowing that Liverpool had pushed forward going for the winner,
they left Isidore in the up by the halfway line inside the center circle.
Roof's got hold of the ball, launched it up,
and Isidore probably will be really really.
disappointed he hasn't gone on and won this game for sunderland tonight but in their
impressive season that that's a real credible draw and a deserved draw tonight deal yeah without
a doubt that's the least they deserve to go away with these sunderland fans i've got to say
i think sundland approached this game and if it was a championship game or league one game
they would have done exactly the same because they find themselves in possible goal scoring positions
or possible creating a chance position and they never turn it down whether it's a cross in the box
whether it's a long throw
whether it's a corner
when your centre halves
have gone up
bang it in the box
they don't play it short
they don't complicate it
tonight
Liverpool looked like the ones
that had no idea
how to break this team down
they got lucky I think
Liverpool to get a point tonight
Sunderland really
on a 90 minute performance
deserved to win the game
Deion Mike thank you
we can hear now from Arna Slot
Of course it's a disappointment
because if you play a home game
you want to win
but we also knew we faced
a very strong good Sunderland team
who's been a very difficult team to play against for all the teams in the league.
Hardly conceded goals, I think only four times conceded two goals.
So the positive thing for us was that I think in our recent runoff form
or recent games every time when we went down, we weren't able to score the equalizer
and that was the positive thing today that we found that goal.
And we were pushing and trying a lot to make the second one, but unfortunately we couldn't.
Florian thought he'd scored that goal
but ultimately credited to one of the defenders
it did take a big deflection on its way through
what do you make of his performance this evening
because he started in midfield
then on the second half you had him further on the left-hand side
yeah I think he did really well against West Hamman
today again he was a player that was a lot on the ball
trying to create a lot, his teammates looked a lot for him
he was really active and it wasn't a surprise to me
that he was involved in the goal we scored because I think
He was multiple times involved in a dangerous situation for us
but it's not easy to create a tense against the team
that can either press you a very aggressive high up the pitch
or is with so many bodies in and around the box
and not only bodies, the bodies they have
or they throw themselves in front of every ball,
defend really, really good
so it's not easy to score against them
but in the end we did once
which wasn't enough to take the win.
You've got so many talented players here, everybody knows that.
How frustrating is it that at the moment,
you're not quite getting them to gel together consistently during 90 minutes?
I think every team in the Premier League has so many talented players,
and we are one of them, and that's obvious.
Yeah, like I said, this season's far too many times.
We don't concede a lot of chances,
but the few chances we do concede go in,
and we're in that period of time,
Unfortunately for us, so many times we are creating more than we concede.
But the end result has been far too many times that we then lose a game of football.
Now, today, again, we've created more than them.
But again, not that much, by the way, but by a small margin.
But again, we weren't lucky enough to get the win over the line.
But this game we've played today, we've lost in recent weeks.
So that's a positive to take.
Is it one of the biggest head scratches for your moment, Tarno,
that you're struggling to score goals?
Not to create chances, but to score goals.
I think from open play, I don't know after today,
but before this weekend we were the team from open play
that created the most chances.
But yeah, that's a nice death to have maybe,
because it does give you the confidence that goals will eventually come
with the talented and quality players we have.
But yeah, we're already 14 games in now
and we haven't been able to score enough from open play
and we definitely haven't been able to score enough from set pieces.
at pieces. Arsenal 5 clear at the top of the table. They beat Brentford 2-0. Here's Mikhail Arteta.
Well, I'm really happy with the performance, with the win, with the clean sheet. We face a really
tough team. They don't need much, just a throw-in set-piece. And they are so good at generating
these kind of things. They are really well coached and one end is never enough. You know that
you are going to be tested at some point. They generated some dangerous throw-ins and especially
I had one big save that I had to make on the corner.
Apart from that, I think we dominated the game
and created the biggest challenges,
but until you scored, the tune up, the game is not over.
How satisfied were you with the way that you managed
to stop them creating too many chances?
Yeah, it's very good.
I think we look very mature, especially the moment
that our energy was dropping the way we handled the ball.
The personality we have to keep it in the right areas,
to attract them, to have to have spaces to run
like we did in the second goal with Bukai.
Really pleased because we lost some players again,
a lot of issues.
in the back line
but whoever comes,
performs and I'm delighted to see that.
Yeah, I think that you said
that the way that you've dealt
with all of the injury absentees
and the way the players have stepped up
has been key to how things have gone for you this season.
You had to do it again tonight.
Well, we lost our two centrebacks,
Willie and Big Gabi.
Today, we lost Mosquera.
Then Julian has to come in.
Ben White comes in and he has a great performance.
I'm delighted to see that.
Otherwise, we'll be in the position that we're in today.
Mikhail Arteza
after Arsenal be,
Brentford 2-0. And again, the thing that strikes you here, Steph, is there's no drama.
Like, there's drama, it feels like there's drama everywhere else. There was even, there's
even drama with Manchester City last night, really, in the end. And yet there's no drama with
them. It's just a bit routine at the moment for Arsenal. I think you just expect them to
keep churn out these three points. And I think Artet has done really well in terms of he's
known who to rotate it. Of course, it probably wasn't Arsenal's best
performance but ultimately when you get to the Premier
League and you want to win it's about when these three
weeks get week games come it's about winning and of course
would have been disappointed with the Chelsea result but ultimately
you get a draw Chelsea drop points today
man city obviously won but are still further behind than
what Chelsea are and I think for me I think for Arsenal it's just
always a dominant performance both defensively and the score
at the right moments and they put pressure on teams and
Brentford probably knew that it wasn't going to be a game that they were
going to win with a side that they picked but
you've still got to win them games
and you've still got to have the right attitude and mentality.
Yeah, it's control. It's control for me.
They're just in control of everything they're doing.
I think what Michel Artetta's doing
and how he's built his squad.
Again, I just think everything that comes out of his mouth at the minute,
everything that works, every interview that he does,
I just think he's in control.
I think that's the biggest thing,
and I think that's a big sign of champions.
We've seen it with Liverpool last season.
I think we're seeing it now with Michel Artetta this season.
Everything he does just seems thought about
and everything seems in control in terms of what he's doing.

With Mark Chapman
I'm going to switch to the Scottish Premiership
Celtic now level on points
with hearts at the top of the table
Hearts drawing one all at home to Kilmarnock
Celtic beat Dundee by Gold to Nell
They announced that their new manager is Wilfrid Nantes
and he will take over now as new manager
They did that before kickoff
So this meant it was Martin O'Neill's last game in charge.
It was really great, I must admit, really, really great.
Obviously, I was delighted to win the game, relieved that we'd won it.
I thought we could have put the game to bed a lot earlier than that there.
We missed some great chances.
And then we've sort of nervy, nervy sort of finish at the end.
But we've won, and it keeps the club going.
But for me, yeah, it was, you know, to get a reception like that there,
what, 20 odd years after I've left the football club
was pretty special, I must admit.
Where you leave Celtic now from where they were
when you came in is now joint top of the league,
a cup final and a real shot at Europa League progression.
Could you have imagined being at that point?
No, I probably couldn't do,
and I'm going to take all the credit for that
when in a nighteal fight, it was the players that did it.
And you can't...
The game's about the support reasons, about players.
And they rose to the chance,
challenge. You know, we had a tough time of it physically in Meisholand, and if that's how you
pronounce it, I think it is. And then we roared back in the European scene again, and to win
in Firenard was reminiscent of some of the old days that we had before. But to me, coming
back, coming back after that win, wanted not very much time to prepare. Winning at Easter
Road was big for us tonight, or on Sunday. And then third game in
six days, great to win tonight. So yeah, the players have done it and it's, and they are,
they are a really, really decent mob. Sorry, I shouldn't have said mob. No, they're not a mob.
They are, they are really good. I suspected you would deflect the praise that you will get
and having getting onto the players, but you must have done something to galvanise it and get
results so consistently and quickly. Well, I mean, I get great, great help.
I get great help from all the, I mean, starting to name everybody from Sean right through the backroom staff.
They were, they've been great.
I mentioned this before.
They've been great for me and they've been great to me.
And that's pretty good.
And that goes for everyone at the football club.
You know, I've kind of really gone out of my way in many aspects to, you know, to speak to the players, to, you know, to learn about them, which was great.
And then the bottom line of all of this here, no one has.
had they done it, they've made me feel
very young, which I'm
not.
I know you've said repeatedly that you don't
want to give direct advice to the incoming
manager, unless, of course, he asks for it.
Yeah, absolutely. If he asked my
opinion on the players,
I will give it to him. I'll give him an honest
assessment of the players, but
it's, you know, we've, what is it?
How many games do we do?
Do we do? Seven or eight or eight or whatever it was,
eight games. So,
it'll be nothing but a lot of praise for
for their players
and what I think about them
is that they've really stepped up
as I said to you restoration of confidence
was most important
but they've stepped up
they've come up big moments
from the goalkeeper who's made some
really great saves outstanding saves
for us at really important moments
of the games and matches
to the two centre backs who've been terrific
you know to the captain who's been
and I actually mentioned those
because they've been on I think every single minute
I think maybe
maybe Callum might have
come off after
with 10 minutes to go
in one of the games
that we were leading
but outside that
they've been there
and yeah
and the captain's been
he's been a real leader
finally
what are you going to do
with your time now
well that's a very good point
my
my family come up
to the game tonight
you know
the very wife
who said you'll probably
mess it up
and so I'm going
directly to see her
to say that I
actually didn't
but do you know what
she'll do
she'll remind me
that I did
in Meishland
well done
Thank you Martin
Martin
Martin O'Neil
after getting Celtic
level on points with hearts
as he now ends his interim spell
in charge of the club
back to the Premier League
Villa were 2-0 down
at Brighton very early on
they then went 4-2 up
Brighton pulled one back
but Villa held on for a 4-3 win
two for Ollie Watkins
on the night
his last goal came at the end
of September let's hear from him
it's the best feeling
you know to score a goal that's my job at the end of the day and I've gone a while without it so
you know to I've overcome a lot of adversity before this has been a tricky period for me
in my in my career I've not had this since the manager has come in you know a long run of
games without scoring but you keep working hard and you get your rewards thing you've very much
had the crowd right behind you throughout all of this particularly you know when you're
at home I noticed that at the weekend what do you mean sorry the
crowd had been very much with you yeah all the way through all of this um describe the
feeling when the ball hit the back of the net tonight yeah so the first one i just found myself
in the box i didn't know if um i touched it but i didn't know if it went to evan or if it was
an own goal or something like that but so i just kind of ran back claimed it yeah it's nicer it's
definitely mine though i've looked back it's definitely mine and then the second one obviously
a ball in behind i had a few opportunities where i ran in behind and um
I wasn't clinical enough.
Keeping made a couple of good saves.
But, you know, then the third time I found it.
So, yeah, good finish.
And, yeah, just a bit of relief, really,
because, like I said, I had a bit of difficult run.
Yeah, yeah, nice to put that behind me and help the team.
You know, we're two goals behind away at Brighton.
Wasn't looking very good, was it, after half an hour?
No, no, no.
But I had that chance, and then they've gone and scored straight away,
found ourselves two-nil behind, started the game.
a little bit slow.
So to react like that
and come back and get the goals is nice.
It was a really good game to watch.
Your manager in the first half
was nearly as interesting as the play, actually.
He was going nuts, was he?
Yeah, just a bit.
I mean, I wouldn't have mind
he being in the dressing room at halftime.
To be fair, at half time,
I knew he had been shouting.
I couldn't hear him,
but his voice had basically gone.
So I thought he was going nuts on the sideline.
But yeah, look, he's very passionate
and that's why we're doing so well because he's so demanding,
you know, now that we're doing good,
he makes us work even harder and he's more demanding.
So, yeah, I can't speak highly enough of him.
It was some comeback, you know, you're 4-2 ahead,
then Brighton show life again,
coming back to 4-3.
Marco Bizot, in at the last moment for Emmy Martinez,
what a save there at the end to preserve the three points.
Yeah, I think Marco,
it's always hard as a keeper to come in.
You kind of get thrown in the deep end a little bit
and he's shown great character.
You know, whenever he comes in, he gets on with it.
And, yeah, credit to him because it's not easy to do that, you know.
So, yeah, an amazing guy and he deserves it.
Simon Brotherton with Ollie Watkins.
If John Murray's listening, this will annoy him, I think.
So I apologise because I realised there was football before the Premier League.
but Unae Emery has now
on more Premier League games in charge of Aston Villa
than any other manager in Villa's history.
Not surprised.
I think, his record
has been phenomenal since he's gone into the football club.
You think about where they were
when he took over from Stephen Gerard.
They were, I think they were bottom three
or just maybe a place out of it.
And then he's taken them to...
With a lot of the same players
going back to the transfer point from earlier on.
Absolutely, yeah.
and you think of where they've gone
who've got to play Champions League football
European football
qualified well being top four team
a couple of times
or they're in that position now
and you just look and think
I just think he's a brilliant manager
I think to be 2-0 down
and still be so relaxed on the sideline
and thinking I can get my team back into this
I think that's the difference
when you look on the cross at certain managers
and you go what do we do boss
and he goes don't worry it's fine
you'd be absolutely fine
just keep on doing what you do
and we'll work on things.
The little tweaks he makes in game,
massive difference to things,
so tactically aware of what's going on,
how to hurt players,
how to hurt teams.
I've been fortunate to watch Villar Train,
the level of detail
that goes into a training session
and is how meticulous here.
Was you who told me about the,
what's the machine they use in golf?
Trackman.
Trackman.
Yeah, yeah.
He does the track.
Well, it was Oster McPhiers,
who takes the,
so they do trackman?
Do you know their story?
So they use a trackman for set pieces for free kicks
So they'll set it up
So for anyone who doesn't know what a track man is
It'll measure your swing
And the trajectory of the ball
The speed of the ball
So they use it for a football to take free kicks
And certain positions around the box
Will suit certain players
So often when you see it
And it's like five players round the ball
They don't do that at Villa
There's only two people around the ball
Because that's who should be on it
For that position on the pitch
Because they've worked on it and gone
Yeah, you're better in this position
you're better in this position
and it's just phenomenal.
So the Roger's goal at Leeds would have come from that?
You're the Roger's free kick.
Well, they've worked on that over the course of a year
and seeing how to improve that knuckleball effect,
get it over the wall.
So Buendia has a record on Trackman
that goes back three years now
and it just keeps on
so he can change how he changed his thing.
So Austin McPhee was saying about Buendia
he used to hit a shot
with a almost like a pitching wedge
and he was saying we want to get it to a seven,
so when he hits it over the wall it'll dip and come down quicker and it's just the level of detail
and they know how to then he'll just work on his technique and change in the foot shape of the ball
when it connects but that's all backed up by technology unbelievable detail a pitching wedge like a
professional would hit it not like my pitching wedge that would have gone into the knee
of the wall and Andrew Murray did tell me about your pitching wedges and your drive I'm going to get back
to the football back to the football not so nice when it's on the other foot
No, no, definitely not.
I wish I could control your mics in here, but I'm not able to.
Oliver Glassers signed up to fifth this evening after Palace 1-1-0 at Burnley.
Here he is.
I think we have to split it into two parts.
I think the first 60 minutes were really good, but it was a good performance,
controlling the game, scoring a nice goal.
Having a big opportunity to score the second, and, yeah, the last 30 minutes was more or less to survive.
We could see, yeah, legs getting fatigue.
the head getting fatigue but yeah we brought in new players and then it was just to to work
and getting this clean sheet and getting the win over the goal line and that's what we did today
and I'm really proud of the of the resilience of the of the commitment of the togetherness we showed
and then it was not to to play the stars from the sky and it was not possible today it was then
is get this win and that's what we did and now we are 23 points after 13 games so
So, yeah, it makes me proud of the team.
They're in fifth, Steph.
They're level on points for Sunderland.
They're a point off Chelsea and fourth,
four points off filler, who are in third.
They have a Champions League chance, don't they?
I know we're not halfway through the season yet,
but they have to, and then it would lead me on to.
I wonder how many teams actually do have a Champions League place chance.
This season's crazy.
There's still so many teams that could potentially get into the Champions League.
I think that's what I mean by teams that go on runs,
they've got a potential that climb a lot of.
places and like what you said
Connor in terms of Man United
if they go and win tomorrow they put themselves into
even bigger chance of trying to
climb that table and get more points
bigger performances and the confidence
gets even higher so
honestly this season you couldn't really
kind of you try and guess the teams that begin
the season but now the players and teams
put themselves in some great positions
or you go the other you could go the other way
couldn't you and go do you know what just over a month
ago we were all raving about Bournemouth
They've lost four of five
They haven't one in five
And all of a sudden
They've gone from third
Or wherever they were
Down to 14th
They love you, the bomb
No I know
My point being
You can easily
And yet, despite all of that
They're only four points
Off Palace
So the place is kind
The position in the table
Is sort of a bit misleading
It's brilliant though
Isn't it
This is what we want
In the Premier League
I know Arsenal
might run away with
the league a little bit, but it's got to be so competitive
in other parts of the league to keep
it interesting. I think the big thing from
Oliver Glasner's point of view is
I think the question from him
where he came out the other day and sort of said
we didn't back up, well, I didn't get backed
because I think he realizes
this season was a real opportunity to
go for a decent league position
with a little bit more backing. Obviously
he knew the European competition. It's very
difficult to juggle both. But you
wonder how long that small
squad of players can continue to
fight on Europe and challenge to get in the top four places or at least the top
I mean he won't be going top four but they'll be looking top six top eight
because you go down to Bournemouth on 19 also on 19 of Brentford and Newcastle
and spurs and one of the reasons why I went down that far is the majority of teams from
14th up to third you might be able to argue a case for finishing top four or top
five virtually all of them 100% and I think we need to give
clubs like the ones you just mentioned there
not certainly Newcastle over there
Newcastle have done amazing
but I mean your Brentford your palaces
your Brightons who were just expecting to be up there now
obviously your villas have done really well over the last
they've really cemented that place haven't they
from maybe your 12th to your 7th
your 6es and the fighting on all fronts
to get into Europa Conference League
I think it's full credit to how the Premier League's evolved
over the last few years even last year
seeing where Tottenham and Man United finished
and we're seeing teams like we did
playing European competitions this year
I'd much rather say it I love seeing teams like Palace playing
in Europe, we've not been there for so many years.
So for me, it's absolutely brilliant for the Premier League.
It's a brilliant spectacle, isn't a brilliant spectacle.
But that's why it's so difficult for the three coming up now as well.
Well, we'll hear from one of the ones that came up in just a moment after their win.
Wolves, bottom of the table, though way adrift.
Eight points off Burnley in 19th, nine off West Ham in 18th, but now 12 from safety.
Beaten at home by Nottingham Forest.
Here's Rob Edwards.
The foremost level was poor, if I'm being honest.
So the levels that we set ourselves on the weekend against Aston Villa,
we didn't hit anywhere near that tonight.
And it's really frustrating, really, really frustrating.
The lads know, and we've got to try and react now.
That's as simple as that.
Can you explain or understand why that is?
Not really.
It's a mentality thing and a physical thing.
I think it's both.
We've got to be able to switch our minds into gear
and we've got to fight to win a game of football.
And in the first half, in particular,
we were very very passive we played back and sideways too much we didn't run forward enough
there was um yeah that physically we looked we looked weak so that was really really
frustrating step and Connor and Stephen thank you very much that's it for this episode
