Starting point is 00:00:00 This BBC podcast is supported by ads outside the UK. Welcome to the Inside Track with me, Rick Edwards. This is the podcast that takes you inside Formula One like never before. And I'm Matt Magendie, and thanks to my exclusive access, I'll be getting up close and personal with Red Bull Racing this season. This week, I sit down with one of the team's big bosses, Dr Helmut Marko. I also didn't think that Max would win for championships. He didn't have the success what we expected from him.
Starting point is 00:00:31 Experience Formula One like never before by tuning into the inside track wherever you get your podcasts. BBC Sounds, music, radio, podcasts. The Football Daily Podcast. two weeks to go until Euro 2025 kicks off in Switzerland. I'm Katie Smith and on this episode we're going to meet the Lionesses representing England as they try to defend their crown. Former Lionesses goalkeeper Karen Bardsley was with me at St George's Park all this afternoon.
Starting point is 00:01:12 And Karen, should we just set the scene at the home of English football? We were in a large sports hall and it was a little bit like speed dating, wasn't it? Yeah, it was a bit strange. There were loads of little platforms everywhere and it just felt like there was going to be loads of little mini interviews going on but you know the girls were pretty relaxed I think they went about you know the business as professionally as you can imagine but yeah um I asked if they had any good dates and none really said that they pulled so yeah some of them said they were taken which I thought was just very boring before I saw that
Starting point is 00:01:40 what are you talking about? So also just to add to the flavor of what it was, there was a massive clock in the middle of the room that had 60 minutes, so an hour on there, and as soon as they walked in, it started ticking down. So for us in the media, the idea was, we were given a briefing before and they said, be nice to each other, try and sort of form orderly queues in a very British English way around the players,
Starting point is 00:02:02 and you should try and get sort of three to five minutes-ish with each one and they were in these pairs and so there was a kind of time pressure but also it felt like it was quite fun and quite relaxed. Yeah I mean we had to try to be a bit more succinct didn't we in terms of like just setting things up and moving things around and getting the questions out but I thought yeah everyone you know there was no no fights breaking out no no elbows no nudging but um yeah I think some patience was wearing a bit thin as the the hour ticked down And what were your general impressions of how they seemed because you have this really nice range I think with the England team that we got this time of some of the returners the likes of Leah Williamson Beth Meade Chloe Kelly and then some complete fresh wide eyes in the
Starting point is 00:02:45 likes of Aggie Beaver Jones, Michelle Ajamann. So there was a real contrast, I think, of people having done this before versus this being completely brand new. Yeah, no, it was a good balance, wasn't it? I thought the vibe itself was very, very relaxed. As you say, it was very conversational. It wasn't too formal as we kind of feared it would be. There's a barista in the corner making coffees and you know, one of the media officers was coming around with lattes and things like that. So yeah. Did you get one? I didn't know. I did ask, but no, thanks David.
Starting point is 00:03:12 No, but like the dogs were running about, you know, so it was like I said all very informal and the conversation was flowing. So yeah, it was really nice some insights. Yeah, so we are gonna hear from the likes of Lauren James and Lucy bronze in a little bit But let's bring in our commentator Vicky sparks as well He's gonna be out in Switzerland with us and Vicky weren't with us at St. George's Park today But I thought you'd find this quite funny We asked a couple of the players if they were excited to get going and they said when does it actually start?
Starting point is 00:03:42 It's two weeks and then they go. Yeah. Yeah, but when's but when's our match so yeah you just remind us England playing Friday yeah in two weeks time they are playing on the 5th of July so they are playing that day yes and 2nd of July is when it all kicks off with the the earlier games Switzerland Norway one of those in Group A so yeah it's I can't wait two weeks to go and just as we get closer and I'm sure the players who were involved in Euro 2022 13 of them in this Lioness's squad and of course the players that weren't involved but will have been at Wembley or watching it or listening to it like like so many of the Lioness's fans, that you just can't help but think back to
Starting point is 00:04:27 what a glorious, glorious tournament it was for England three years ago. And they go into this, as you say, as defending European champions and looking to become the first senior England side men's or women's to retain a major trophy that they've won. So let's see if they can do it. Well, without further ado then,
Starting point is 00:04:43 let's hear from our first two Lionesses. Rachel Burden spoke to Lauren James and Lucy Bronze about how great it is to be back in a major tournament squad for England. Yeah, definitely. We always say that. And I think this one more so for me as I've got older, a little bit more of an age gap and stuff, but yeah, there's lots of new faces I think for this tournament. There's maybe eight or nine debutants, I can't remember. For a tournament, even more
Starting point is 00:05:08 for euros. So it's definitely a different team and different dynamic. But it's fun. It's very youthful and exciting to him. Do you feel like the mother of the group? Is that insulting? I think I'm... The big sister? Yeah. I think it's nice. I'm treated with respect, so I'll accept that. And that's as it should be, that is as it should be. As I say, you've been here so many times before, that hunger, that desire to go out and do what you did at the Euros, just three years ago now, I don't know how recent it feels for you, but is that still there, is it different each time?
Starting point is 00:05:40 Yeah, there's always a hunger to win trophies. I think you have the same when you play at club, you repeat the same season over and over. I think you have the same when you play at club, you repeat the same season over and over. I think it's more hunger when you play for England on the international stage because the opportunities come few and far between. I've been saying recently, I'm one of the lucky people who've been to many international tournaments, but for some people, they maybe only get one or two
Starting point is 00:06:00 opportunities or even none. So to have another opportunity of winning something with England is huge and a big motivation. Lauren you've come so close but I don't know how painful that is now to kind of think about how close you came and whether that is an extra motivation for you to be there and to get a winners medal around your neck. Yeah it was very close, I was just taking it a step at a time I did want to put pressure on myself to make anything but thankfully I'm here. In terms of that, not putting pressure on yourself, what kind of expectations should
Starting point is 00:06:32 the fans have this time? Do you want them just to say, forget the last two major tournaments, we don't really know where this one's going to go? Or do you want them to have that ambition that they know, they think, they have confidence that you will go out and win this? No, obviously I want the fans to have expectations and belief in us and that's obviously what we want to try and do is go out and win. I mean that's obvious but I just wonder how you guide the fans this time through the journey because they will be emotionally with you every step of the way. Yeah, I mean it's easy to look at the last two tournaments and even if you compare them against each other
Starting point is 00:07:06 they were completely different rollercoaster rides in terms of the teams that... the team we played, our performances, our results they were so different. I think this tournament again is another opportunity for a different England team to come out different performances, different results again you can never compare one tournament to the next I know that haven't been to so many but I think we know that we've got one of the strongest squads
Starting point is 00:07:29 going to the Euros. We have the belief that we can beat any team, that we can win it, but there are other teams that are also capable. So that was Lucy Bronze alongside Lauren James and Karen you were listening to that alongside me. I think that's quite an interesting standpoint now from Lucy Bronze. She is such a tournament stalwart. She's an England stalwart. She made her debut back in 2013. So how does your role change as you get older and more experienced?
Starting point is 00:07:55 No, absolutely. I can remember being in that 2013 squad with her and I think she got called up and didn't get a minute, but she was a fantastic squad player. She was really supportive. She kind of learned to understand what her role was and how to deliver it in the squad and you know 2015 came she got her moment you know scored goals and and and you learn how to share your experiences with the younger you know players whether it's taking them
Starting point is 00:08:18 having a quiet word here and there being a role model on the pitch but yeah I think the older you get the more understanding you gain of that you can't necessarily play every single minute. Things don't always kind of go your way, but the team ultimately is the most important thing. And you take that and you put it on your shoulders and you go, okay, if the team can perform, if we can get the result, I've done my job in some way, shape or form. And yeah, of course you always want to be on the pitch. You always want to result. I've done my job in some way shape or form and yeah of course you always want to be on the pitch you always want to be able to contribute on the grass but sometimes it's just bigger than you and I imagine she'll still play
Starting point is 00:08:51 a massive role on the pitch but now she has that balance and understanding that some people kind of need to have a conversation here and there take a bit more time. I think her leadership journey is fascinating and Karen I'd be so interested in your insight into this because obviously you will have seen that develop as a teammate with England throughout her career. I mean, I think she's always played the game the same way, hasn't she?
Starting point is 00:09:13 You know, 100% heart on her sleeve, the player that when you look around and you're one nil down going into 18 minutes, she just by force of personality and force of nature almost, can you know, drag a team up the pitch by what she's doing herself but I remember when she was at Leon talking about how Wendy Renard was such an influence on her in terms of how she viewed that captaincy role she has captained England on occasion but saying that you know in the past that was something that she never really
Starting point is 00:09:41 had that as a dream or an ambition you know know, felt that she could influence in other ways, but actually, realising how much you can influence the team when you take on those sort of formal leadership roles. And I wonder how you've kind of seen her leadership journey, I guess, both on and off the pitch progress throughout her career. Yeah, you're right. You know, as over the course of my time playing with Lucy, she's always been that really competitive person that always wants to win and is always willing to put the team on her shoulders to make It happen sometimes you're nine times out of ten It usually works out and other times it doesn't but having that bravery and the courage to kind of go I'm gonna try to do something about this is
Starting point is 00:10:16 Huge and it's something that not everyone has what I think you probably learned from from Wendy Rennard is You know having that that quiet leadership element as well You know in terms of like the emotional control, those types of things and recognizing that maybe not everyone kind of delivers that leadership or their performance in the same way that you would expect to see it from yourself, etc. So I think she's kind of really stretched herself from an empathetic perspective. She's been able to kind of understand that, you know, there's more than one way to skin a cat so to speak. Well and the other thing to mention is some big high profile absences that we had literally
Starting point is 00:10:50 in the last couple of weeks Karen in the likes of Millie Bright who has taken herself out of the reckoning to protect her own mental health, Mary Earp's retiring, Frank Kirby. So actually Lucy Bronze's role in leadership position now has perhaps escalated. Yeah, you know, it won't be anything different than I think what she's used to delivering, you know, in terms of she'll still deliver on the pitch, she'll still deliver off the pitch in the way that she does. Yeah, you cannot be all of those things to everyone as well. I think that's really important to note because as soon as you try to do that, you take your
Starting point is 00:11:23 eye off your own performance, you take your eye off what's important. So it's across everyone in the group, the other senior players and you know, I include people like Kira Walsh in this now, you know, who's 28, who I would have, she still seems so young to me, but she'll be that type of person now that's taking those younger players under their wing as well and kind of going, right, okay, I've learned this, this is beneficial for me, maybe think about adding this into your game or, you know, take a step back here and there and try to find that balance as well. So, yeah, I wouldn't put too much on Lucy Bronze's shoulder, she's doing enough as it is. And just a quick word before we hear from our next two Lionesses on Lauren James, who
Starting point is 00:12:00 I think for some people it was a bit of a wild card pick from Serena Vigman just because we weren't quite sure what sort of form she was in so it was good to see her there today Karen and addressing the media and putting some doubts to rest I guess. Yeah no it was it was really nice to see see Lauren James I think for me I was I wasn't really in any doubt that she was gonna make the squad I think it was all going to be determined by how fit and healthy she was at the time of the squad selection so fortunately I think it was all going to be determined by how fit and healthy she was at the time of the squad selection. So fortunately, I think she was in a good place, but she's one of those players who's so silky, so creative, like she would just be a massive mess.
Starting point is 00:12:34 Just a game changer. Yeah, we call her the cheat code, you know, and I think that's exactly what she does, whether it's five, 10 minutes on the pitch, whether it's a full 90, but yeah, you can't not have her in the squad if she's available. From my very first game, I knew that I wanted to be a goalkeeper. The buzz and the adrenaline that I got from it. The dream was to always represent my country. Mary-Herb's desperate to impress.
Starting point is 00:12:57 I remember saying, I know I've got what it takes. A crucial save from Herb's. You have to be obsessed. Mary-Herb's with a super save. You just look at some of the saves that she makes. Not everyone can do that. I really had no idea really how far I would go. England around Don Abboten!
Starting point is 00:13:14 It felt like my world was ending. That was the moment. I was in pieces on the kitchen floor. You have to hit rock bottom to understand what you really want. Mary would put herself in front of anything and feel like she could stop it. I've done something that I'd always dreamed of doing that I never knew if I would get the opportunity to do. Mary Erbs, Queen of Stops. Watch on BBC iPlayer. Welcome to The Inside Track with me, Rick Edwards. This is the podcast that takes you
Starting point is 00:13:42 inside Formula One like never before. And I'm Matt Magendy, and thanks to my exclusive access, I'll be getting up close and personal with Red Bull Racing this season. This week, I sit down with one of the team's big bosses, Dr Helmut Marko. I also didn't think that Max would win four championships. He didn't have the success what we expected from him. Experience Formula One like never before by tuning into the Inside Track wherever you get your podcasts. So we're going midfield maestros now. We've got Chelsea treble winner Kiera Walsh and first up Manchester United, Liverpool and Grace Clinton. What camp's been like so far? Yeah it's been really fun, the weather's lovely.
Starting point is 00:14:30 Makes a difference doesn't it? It's on size. It actually does when you're in St George's Park to be fair, it makes a massive difference. It's been like a bit of a pre-season vibe which is always nice getting back in but yeah making the connections again and being with people 24-7 is lovely. Yeah you're looking at that, I can feel it. But listen, this is not a whole new experience, you've been here at St George's Park before, but tournament experience is something you have not had.
Starting point is 00:14:54 So how are you anticipating that it's all going to go and feel like, and what's that like for you? It must be different this time. No, obviously we've been preparing for a while, I think this whole season really, we've, you know know in the back of our minds has been looking towards the orders and building towards I think taking things from people like he and like the experienced players in the group is massive because they have so many tips that you would never think of. What kind of things? Just like things to do with social media like you know he's challenging me to be in the gym more and do
Starting point is 00:15:27 more things like just little things like pushing, yeah pushing each other but just little things that you wouldn't think of, the experience skills are really helpful like that and yeah I think it's going to be an exciting summer. Yeah I mean the way they talk about you, Kiri, you think that you were like you know sort of 10 years older than you are but you're still only 28, is that right? Yeah, these lot make me feel older than what I am, I think. But yeah, I think I kind of had like those players for me when I was younger, you know, like Jill Scott, Tony Dougan, they were always trying to help me and tell me things to do and help me improve. So yeah,
Starting point is 00:16:00 try and do that for Grace. I am a little bit hard on Grace, I will admit that, but I think that's just because we know how good she can be and she's got so much potential. So I think, yeah, for us older one, it's just about pushing her to try and get out in the tournament because we're gonna need her. It's amazing to hear that from a legend like this, isn't it? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:16:14 I don't tell her about you after neither. I don't tell her about you. Honestly, I get like, oh, you're like, you done all right today. That's like the biggest win from Key Day. It's good parenting though. Let's talk about the football. It's a really tough group to get out of.
Starting point is 00:16:26 It will be a challenging start to this tournament. How are you feeling about it? What's the kind of strategy first, game up for arms? Yeah, I think we're aware that it's a difficult group. I think we've probably not really spoke about like the fine details just yet. I think it was just about getting back on the grass and getting moving again and yeah, feeling good
Starting point is 00:16:44 and yeah, like making the connections. But as soon as we get close to it we'll speak about it. I think for us it's just really important hitting the ground running and finding our rhythm early. We've also got some great players, they've got some world-class players as well, but I think for us we've got to have total self-belief, otherwise we're going to be going into the game on the back four already. Just about being confident and giving the best version of ourselves.
Starting point is 00:17:04 What are your little comforts that you take with you when you're travelling? into the game on the back four already. So yeah, just about being confident and giving the best version of ourselves. What are your sort of little comforts that you take with you when you're traveling? I know first time traveling away to a tournament, but what will you be taking from home? Probably the tea bags be my main one. I wasn't expecting that. It's serious, we're gonna be in a different country
Starting point is 00:17:22 that doesn't do Yorkshire tea bags. So I'm gonna have to take me in. That would be my... You're likely going to have a lifetime supply now, you said that. I hope so. I hope so. I hope so. I hope so. Wink, wink. What about you, Kierra?
Starting point is 00:17:35 I actually tend to take my pillow. I think it's something that we always got told to do when we were younger, you know, because then you're still kind of sleeping in a similar environment to what you used to. So I'll take my pillow. And you love your food. I know that from your Instagram posts, right? Are you looking forward to sort of getting a chance to get out and try some Swiss food? Yeah, but I also think the quality there is meant to be unbelievable. Not that I've done my research, but the quality of the food is meant to be unbelievable over there. So I'm actually excited for that.
Starting point is 00:18:02 So that was Kiera Walsh and Grace Clinton. And actually, we were asking people about Swiss food, weren't we? Swiss cheese and Hannah Hampton, England's number one carer, just looked at us like, oh, I didn't know that was a thing. Like fondue. I don't think she quite grasped the concept of fondue. You're going to have to take her for a fondue, aren't you? But what was your, couldn't live without then on a tournament? Oh, I just liked having physical photos like that I would print out of my friends
Starting point is 00:18:27 and family and I would take them everywhere and put them into the changing room in the lockers and things like that. That was a thing for me. Oh, so you take them to games as well with you? Yeah, it would be like bit my pre-match routine was just to kind of remind myself of the people that I was playing for. I bet Vicky's got home comfort. Well, do you know what? I think just listening to that interview, the main thing that struck me was that Grace Clinton is a woman after my own heart.
Starting point is 00:18:49 I am so excited about Swiss food, honestly. And Hannah Hampton, if you don't know what fondue is, I mean, that is a learning cultural experience in a novice. We did try and start a trend today called fondue, fondon't, but none of the players really latched on Vicky so we left that one there. I've got a question for you has Karen ever written you a letter? Do you know what and I actually have it upstairs it I'd
Starting point is 00:19:18 still do KB do you remember during the World Cup when you made you got me that little card halfway through the tournament where we were commentating together for Five Live and you wrote some really lovely stuff in it and that just shows me what sort of a teammate you are as well. And that is the theme I wanted to bring out because we had several players Vicky come and stop us as we were going round today including Leah Williamson and Beth Meade both saying I still have that card you wrote me. So Karen, tell us more. What are these cards? Well, I don't know. I mean listen growing up in the States I was always quite like a positive and optimistic person. So I always found it really easy to give people compliments
Starting point is 00:19:55 so when I saw something or when I could appreciate something about someone I wanted to make sure they knew and I didn't want to make it uncomfortable for the other person receiving it. So it was something that I did for every single person at one point through whether it was their debut, their first camp, a major tournament, I would write every single person a note about what I appreciated about them and why I thought they were great. And it's nice to know some people still have them. Well that's it and I think that really shows the dynamic of the team that you have left and kind of led out for these other people to take that space and I thought that was pretty powerful. So I'm waiting for mine, I will await that in Switzerland. But we are moving swiftly on, so let's hear from some more of the Lionesses who are out and about St George's Park today.
Starting point is 00:20:35 Manchester City winger Lauren Hemp, who's back from injury, Chelsea left back Niamh Charles. Here's what they made of the start of camp life. The thing that sticks out to me is that we always have like a welcome meeting and that's like sort of sets the tone for camp. There might be changes and things to know about and that's where you sort of set the scene for camp. So that's something that's always happened. And is that a chance for you all to sort of sit down and share with where you're at at the moment, how you're feeling? Is that what goes on? Yeah, I think like as well like the first training session is always like, I feel always filled with things that are fun and competitive.
Starting point is 00:21:06 Really start the camp off as we mean to go on. It's nice to have everyone all coming together from all your different clubs, being away on holiday and things like that, to just get back together and reset ready for the tournament. What part of the training do you most enjoy? I like the small side of games. We tend to do that quite a lot, which is fun. Yeah, me too. I enjoy a rondo small-sided games. We tend to do that quite a lot which is fun. Yeah me too, I enjoy any like a rondo or small, when it's competitive and yeah it can be annoying if you don't win but if you win it's nothing better. I think a lot of people relate to that because that's a bit more
Starting point is 00:21:32 like five-side park kick around isn't it? Yeah. It'll take you back to your childhood. And it's so competitive like we've got so many competitors. Who's the most competitive person? That's a hard question because a lot of people. I mean you wouldn't all be here if you weren't competitive. Yeah everyone can have their moments like it's not like one person always, some people can have days, some people can have moments and it's what you want to see at the end of the day, when you compete on the biggest stages you need to have that bit of fight and that bit of grit. Do you have to drag yourself to the gym or do you enjoy that aspect of it? Well... I really enjoy the gym or do you enjoy that aspect of it? Well, I really enjoy the gym. You are allowed to say that. No, I think after a hard training session it is really hard
Starting point is 00:22:15 for me to take myself to the gym. Well you know all about rehab, right? She's a real professional, she is really on it. I have been doing a lot of gym recently and it has inspired me to get a lot better at it and as Niamh can vouch. I have been doing a lot of gym recently and it has inspired me to get a lot better at it. And as Niamh can vouch me, I have been doing that well, I think. Yeah, she has. Well done. Credit to Lauren. Because it was only at the beginning of the year you were still injured, weren't you?
Starting point is 00:22:35 You weren't back playing until, what was it, January, February, was it? It was like March, I think. March. Yeah. Yeah, it's been a long, long seven months of gym. That teaches a lot about just patience and trusting the process and giving it time. It's hard. Yeah, it was very hard.
Starting point is 00:22:51 Mentally it was hard. But obviously, very grateful to be back now. Did you think at points during that period you might not be here for this? To begin with, no. I thought I'd be back post-Christmas, hopefully be back with City, obviously, trying to help as much as possible. And then each time my timeline got pushed back,
Starting point is 00:23:13 obviously, then it started to come in my head, like, what if I'm not back in time for the Euros and things like that. But no, obviously, I'm here now, which is the main thing. So yeah, ready to get going. And obviously for you, Niamh, I saw on your Instagram, obviously six in a row, just saying that, just writing that, you know what it is to go and win a big tournament, it may not
Starting point is 00:23:31 be internationals like that but when you get that taste for victory, I mean that doesn't sort of satisfy you, does it? Presumably it just feeds you know your hunger for more. Yeah for sure, I think every season like when you go back in preseason it's like the previous season's gone and like you know how good it feels and it's nothing sweeter and you get to the end of the season and you're like, yeah, I want this again. Like it definitely doesn't dampen once you do it once. It almost makes it more like you love the feeling.
Starting point is 00:23:57 Like you want to chase it even more to not let that go and to get it again. Niamh Charles and Lauren Hemp. And that has been one of the narratives as it feels it always is with England at the moment, Karen leading into tournaments, the injuries and who is going to make it back. Lauren Hemp, one of them and we've got Georgia Stanway, Alex Greenwood were both there as well. I think the thing I'd noticed with Lauren Hemp, I don't know if you agree, when she's been back the last couple of games was just the freshness it felt like it brought to the side. Well she doesn't look like she's been back the last couple of games was just the freshness it felt like it brought to the side.
Starting point is 00:24:25 Well, she doesn't look like she's missed a beat, which is incredible considering how much time she was out. And I think the same goes for Alex Greenwood. Georgia Stanley, we obviously didn't see quite as much of, but for me, there was a noticeable difference when she wasn't on the pitch in that game against Spain as well. So yeah, considering she's back, it's going to be a massive lift, I think, for England as well. So yeah, considering she's back, it's going to be a massive lift, I think, for England as well. But, you know, credit to her. It's a tough run, you know, and having that patience to kind of stick to your rehab and do things really well. And look, everyone
Starting point is 00:24:55 at some point thinks that they aren't maybe going to hit that goal and it makes them buckle down and work even harder and really focus. So credit to everyone that's recovered from some sort of injury that's made it to get back into the squad because it's certainly not easy. Well, and you get a real sense of it there, Vicki, don't you? And I think it goes without saying how important it is for these players to be back. But then you have those characters like Niamh Charles, who, as we just heard there, winning is in her mentality, being part of a very successful Chelsea squad.
Starting point is 00:25:24 Yeah, absolutely. You know, She's been with them since 2020. As a club, they've won six league titles in a row. Of course, the domestic treble this season. And I think this is the thing. You've got players... Well, Niamh Charles is going to her first Euro. She made a couple of sub-appearances at the First World Cup. But some of the players who are going to their first major tournament...
Starting point is 00:25:42 I mean, you look at the likes of Grace Clinton. She has a great debut season with Manchester United. She's played at Wembley in the FA Cup final, a couple of brilliant loan spells with Tottenham and Bristol City as well. Even if these players don't have the experience of major tournaments, they've got experience of playing for their clubs on the biggest stages. They've got the experience of handling these sort of crowds, the sort of pressure that comes with playing for a side like Chelsea, who just won the domestic treble, playing for a side like Arsenal, who's just won the Women's Champions League.
Starting point is 00:26:10 You know, it's all of these things and all of that experience for the players that are going to this first major tournament. That's going to be key. And I think something else that's really interesting as well, as you cast your mind back to 2022 and the Lionesses won the Euros, Elatun and Alessio Russo weren't household names at that point in time. You know, they themselves were thrust into the limelight
Starting point is 00:26:30 off the bench and they coped exceptionally well. So I still think just because this is, you know, a team that's slightly different in terms of composition and youth and experience doesn't mean that they still can't achieve because there's some fantastic talent, particularly in the likes of Grace Clinton as well. And she will be important. And I just thought it was fascinating speaking to some of the Arsenal players. We didn't
Starting point is 00:26:48 hear from them there, but their excitement having become Champions League winners, the buzz that that created around the whole squad, even Hannah Hampton, a Chelsea player saying I was pretty jealous and the motivation that might bring. So loads to be excited about, loads of the characters we heard from there. It all gets underway in a couple of weeks. My thanks though for now to former England goalkeeper Karen Bardsley, our commentator Vicky Sparks, who will be out following every England game for us in Switzerland. So you'll be able to keep across all the matches on Five Live and Sports Extra. England's first game to mark your cards is against France and we'll bring it live on Five Live Saturday,
Starting point is 00:27:22 the 5th of July. That's it for this episode of the Football Daily. The next one will be that season when Blackburn won the league. Thanks for listening. It seems so clear that this wasn't real blood. It's out and out cheating. This is a story of lies and deception, conspiracies and cover-ups. There was terror that it could tear the house down. Courtroom drama and secret deals. So obviously a lie. And a human cost that changed lives and careers forever.
Starting point is 00:28:01 Dee Richards is found guilty and banned for three years. I'm Ross Kemp and this is Sports Strangers Crimes, Bloodgate. Welcome to the Inside Track with me Rick Edwards. This is the podcast that takes you inside Formula One like never before. And I'm Matt Magindy and thanks to my exclusive access I'll be getting up close and personal with Red Bull Racing this season.
