The Football Daily Podcast with Steve Crossman.
Hello there, it's the Football Daily Podcast from Wembley on a day when Newcastle United
have won a major domestic trophy for the first time since 1955. They've beaten Liverpool
2-0 at Wembley,
we've got Isaac Hayden and Stephen Warnock with us inside the stadium,
we'll hear from them shortly,
but firstly, correspondent John Murray with on-the-whistle reaction.
Newcastle have won it!
They've beaten Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final!
And Geordie Joy abounds around Wendley Stadium.
Scenes like this in black and white we have not witnessed for decades and decades and decades.
And Newcastle players running all over the pitch.
all over the pitch and enjoying the moment with their...
celebrating Geordie fans in the three tiers of Wembley Stadium. That banner before the match talked about Newcastle,
this Newcastle team writing their name in history,
and that's what they've done.
A first domestic trophy for Newcastle United,
a first Wembley Cup final win for 70 years.
This is one for the Anos.
Goals from Adjordi, Dan Byrne from Northumberland,
and Alexander Isak from Sweden are the goals that have done it.
And now with the Liverpool stands soon and very quickly emptying after Arna slot has seen his team lose
in his first Liverpool Cup final for Newcastle, the scene to my right.
The scene to my right. Well, it is Geordie, Geordie, Joy.
And, of course, we're seeing the pictures of all of the Newcastle fans,
that you will know whether it's Ant and Dek,
whether it's Alan Shearer, I don't know where Sam Fender is,
he's probably on tour somewhere, but he'll have his eyes on this.
And Newcastle have won it? Liverpool 1-2, Stephen Warrant.
Ah, credit to Newcastle, to a man they were outstanding.
I was watching the reactions of the players when that final whistle went,
and Joe Linton just dropped to his knees every ounce of energy that he had in this football game.
He threw into it, and he was the outstanding performer,
but Newcastle were brilliant, they smothered Liverpool,
they made it difficult for them, they created opportunities,
they defended extremely well, don't forget how many players
Liverpool threw forward in the latter stages of this game.
They stood strong, it looked in doubt towards the end,
and there was a few nervous moments from the Newcastle players,
but they deserved this, they were the better team on the day.
Liverpool, whether they were tired from the game against Paris Saint-Germain in the week,
I'm not giving them that excuse, I don't think they deserve that excuse.
I think you've got to give all the credit for Newcastle,
the game plan, the way they set themselves up, they were outstanding. They were, they were, and the door was opened most appropriately by a local hero in Dan
Byrne. Liverpool 1, Newcastle 2, and in a few minutes time Newcastle will be lifting a cup.
Local hero, the song written by the lead singer of Dire Straits. And Newcastle United fans know all about those.
Before that, you'll have heard them booming out,
Bladen races.
If you don't know the words, there's a line in the middle,
all the lads and lasses there, all with smiling faces.
Well, that's what we're looking at around Wembley Stadium.
Newcastle fans holding their scarves aloft,
some just shaking their heads. the
must be about 50m away from me,
but I could see him just puff
his cheeks out. I think the word Isaac Hayden is finally. Yeah, I mean, I'm lost for words, to be honest with you.
What a performance from the side.
I mean, every single player to a man
was unbelievable on top of their game.
But, you know, special mention to Joe Linton,
I thought today, best player in the park.
He had everything. He had pace going forwards.
He was winning the second balls.
He was defensively solid.
And also the back four. I mean,
you know, we talk about burn obviously because of the goal, but you know, Trippier, Liberamento
were top notch against two very, very fast wingers and Fabian Schar on the ball, especially today
was very, very good as well. So an overall amazing team performance and these scenes will live long
in the memories for a lot of Geordie fans. I think I can see Jake and Murphy down there with a selfie the
I think I can see Jacob Murphy
down there with a selfie stick.
He's just running front of the
Newcastle fans right away on the
other side of the page, but
Jacob Murphy played a massive
part. He got the assist for
Alexander is at the eighth time
that Jacob Murphy has assisted Isaac this season, his family, the Murphy family, are from Ashington, Dan Burn is from Blythe, these
two mining towns that have seen so many hard times over the years, especially since the early 1990s.
Are these John Murray scenes now over to the right-hand side?
Yeah, all of those years, all of those agonies, all of those cup final disappointments, and not just cup finals, you know.
Some of the cup catastrophes in a footballing sense
that Newcastle have suffered over the years,
and some of the embarrassments, really, as well,
being knocked out by teams way below them in the Tournament.
You remember, Hereford United in the FA Cup, of course, as well.
That's all part of
this story since Newcastle were able to reach this point. They said that there was a curse
against them, didn't they? Well, the curse has been broken today. Stephen Warner, one thing that you
noticed, obviously most of our discussion is going to be about Newcastle because they're the
winners of the League Cup final and it's an incredible story for them. We'll also talk Liverpool as well. What was the first thing Virgil van Dijk did?
Well, straight away there was an embrace at the halfway line between him and Dan Burn, which was superb.
But then the Newcastle fans and players were in front of the fan group and they were in a big huddle
and van Dijk stood at the side of it, waited for it to break and then he just went round and shook every single player's hand within that group in the Newcastle half.
I think he just respected what Newcastle have done today.
The game was played in a magnificent manner,
and that is just...
I mean, it's class, it shows a massive sign of respect for Newcastle as well.
They've just announced, Isaac, that Dan Byrne is the player of the match,
as if his story couldn't get any more complete. No, I mean, as think you can just say that you
can just say that you can just
say that you can just say that
Dan Burn is the player of the
match as if his story couldn't
get any more complete. No, I
mean, as I said, it was
probably between Dan Burn and
Joe Linton for me for the man
the match. Obviously, Dan got
the first goal or proof of
goal. But yeah, I mean, I don't
think any of them are really
going to care tonight. He was man in a match is just about winning the match and I said the scenes down there. Absolutely unbelievable. And the the the Liverpool players think they're tired. So from Liverpool's game on Tuesday night, they played extra time,
so can we put that doubt into their minds straight away?
Can we put them on the back foot? Can we make them feel heavy-legged?
Mentally, they might not think it, but make them feel it.
And that's exactly what they did, they smothered them,
they made it difficult for them the week that Liverpool have had.
I wonder whether Arnaud Slott might look back on this week
and think one of the biggest lessons this week was not making more changes
against Southampton.
Were they 13 points, 14 points clear going into that game?
13 points clear they were.
Going into that game, they made three changes.
Would he have made more having looked back on that and said,
big game against Paris Saint-Germain, Cup final after it,
the league will take care of itself over the course of time. They're still good enough to see that through. This Liverpool
team look tired today, don't want to make excuses for them, but they've had a really
tough week with the 120 minutes. But credit to Newcastle, they prayed on that, they made
the most of that.
Well, we keep mentioning 1955, the last time Newcastle won a major domestic trophy. That
wasn't just before VAR goal line technology in the back pass rule,
that was before substitutions in football.
Wow, Wills is good luck getting any Newcastle player off the pitch
for the next 20 or 30 minutes, they've got a trophy to lift.
Before that, John Murray, the Liverpool players are already making that walk
that nobody wants to walk.
The Liverpool players will be making their way up,
so our commentary position is right at the back of the lower tier.
We always see them, in fact, Stephen, you've just pointed out
that it's the other staircase away from us on the left side of the stadium,
where the Liverpool players are making their way up to receive their runners-up medals.
And indeed, now, on the screen in front of us here,
showing us the pictures from the tier above,
we see Arna slot leading his team, Virgil van Dijk,
right behind him to receive their runners-up medal
from the presentation party.
And Arna slot, you know, they can look forward to what will be
an extraordinary end to the season for Liverpool.
Here he is, just out of the window, to our left, Virgil van Dijk.
And the Liverpool goal scorer, Thiers, behind him as well.
They've got a significant, a momentous triumph, almost certainly, just a few weeks away,
but they wanted more.
It's not a nice walk when you lose this competition,
I've done that walk, I've been up there collecting that loser's medal,
and it's one of the worst feelings in football,
but I'm just watching the players as they come past.
And one of the players who walked past there was Mohamed Salah,
who's been incredible this season, but was absent today.
He didn't turn up, he was just on the periphery of the game.
He scored one goal for Liverpool now in eight appearances at Wembley Stadium for them.
But it was the way that the game developed today, and just to go back to Newcastle,
as Liverpool players continue to come past us here and walk down the steps,
as the Newcastle players are all gathering on the pitch,
waiting for an entirely different climb up the steps towards the Royal Box at Wembley Stadium. You know, I feel that
experience that they had two years ago in this final, and because of the circumstances with
financial fair play, the fact that they haven't been able to spend the money that they wanted,
that means that so many of these players experienced that defeat.
And having played against West Ham and won in London, the other side of London on Monday night,
you know, their focus, their attention, we saw it from their approach today,
there was a steely determination to make sure that didn't happen again.
Yeah, lessons learned from the previous final,
I'd love that opportunity to come back to Wembley to put it right, to have that opportunity to try and correct
the wrongs that you made, the mistakes you made leading up to the game,
the mistakes within a game.
And these players will feel very fortunate that they've been able to correct it,
and they have corrected it, and they've gone on to win this final,
and rightly so.
the final and rightly so.
The Football Daily Podcast with Steve Crossman.
It's the scandal that rocked rugby union to its core.
The so-called Bloodgate scandal.
Tom Williams now receiving attention.
It seems so clear that this wasn't real blood.
It's out and out cheating.
This is a story of lies and deception,
conspiracies and cover-ups.
There was terror that it could tear the house down.
Courtroom drama and secret deals.
So obviously a lie.
And a human cost that changed lives and careers forever.
Dean Richards is found guilty and banned for three years.
I'm Ross Kemp and this is Sports Strangers Crimes, Bloodgate.
Listen on BBC Sounds. Portuguese, German, Chilean, a Dutchman, and a game.
But now an Englishman will watch Bruno Gimourange receive the League Cup.
CHEERING
He lifts it alongside Kieran Trippiak, the two of them kiss the trophy.
It's got black and white ribbons on it.
And it has been cheered to the rafters by those Newcastle United fans in the stands.
And looking to my right, scenes like this have not been witnessed for such a long time.
Inside Wembley Stadium, all the lads and lasses there, all with smiling
faces.
The Newcastle players will emerge shortly just to our left hand side, coming down the
steps here at Wembley Stadium. And all of the fans around us, Isaac, I'll say this,
they know they won the game, they were there when to say this. I'm not going to say this. They know they won the
game. They were there when the
final whistle blew, but not
until that trophy is lifted. Do
you really breathe out and
embrace the moment? And what a
moment? Yeah, what a fantastic
moment as well. Just watching
those pictures there was
fantastic to see Jamala cells up
there lifting the trophy as
well. You know what a servant
he's been to the football club
and he's been there from the dark days and he's still there now, obviously recovering from the
fans. This will be a moment
that they'll never forget and
said to the younger generation
of Newcastle fans now up and
coming. This will be another
fantastic moment for them and
hopefully now with the
ownership and the funds that
will be provided to keep
pushing and moving and moving
up the table in the Premier
League and winning more things.
This will be a regular occurrence for the football club.
Steven, we said before the game, this is an opportunity for Newcastle to really unlock something about their future,
the kind of thing you can't unlock without winning a major trophy. What next now for them?
Well, I think if you're an onlooking player and you're potentially looking for a new club in the summer
and to move on or to get an opportunity in the Premier League, and you look at this fan base, but you look at the manager,
you look at the style of play, you look at the quality of players
within that Newcastle squad, I think you're drawn to it,
I think you can't help be drawn to it,
and that is a magnificent sort of statement from Newcastle
to try and move themselves forward now.
It's absolutely brilliant for these Newcastle players.
The other thing I was going to say, Steve, is tell me this competition doesn't mean as much.
Every single player, look what it means to them. I'd have given you anything to pick that trophy up,
and I'm looking at these players and I'm absolutely over the moon for them because
that is an incredible achievement for these Newcastle players.
The cheers every couple of seconds as every Newcastle player in turn lifts the trophy, the
every couple of seconds as
every Newcastle player in turn
lifts the trophy, although there
was also Stephen, a big chair
for the face of Alan Shearer
coming up almost as big. I
think. Yeah, I mean, Alan's
obviously a huge supporter of
Newcastle, and he's probably
dreamed about this moment. He
had opportunities in the FA Cup himself to come to Wembley and try and win a trophy. He wasn't able to do it, but there's a feeling of satisfaction when you see your team lift that trophy and he'll
be as happy as anyone within the stadium. It just felt, Isaac, that one moment right at the end of
that first half when it called for Newcastle, you knew that they deserved one, you knew it could
change the game. It was like
Dan Byrd channeled Alan Shearer
for five seconds there when he
thought that ball into the back
of the net with his forehead.
It was an unbelievable finish
from down, but I said to be
fair, the set piece routine was
working all day all afternoon.
It was getting on the end of
corners. So obviously something
that they've been working on
with JT Jason Tindall and said
credit goes to him as well for
those set piece routines. But no, I mean, to a seen a lot of great things from the
players, and I've seen a lot of
great things from the players
and Tindall and I said credit
goes to him as well for those
set piece routines. But no, I
mean, to a man, the New Castle
players today were fantastic,
and it turned out to be a big
occasion. And as I said, it's
going to be a massive moment in
New Castle's recent history and
another big reason of now the
finances and everything that
there is in the club to push forward and hopefully have more of these every year. I've just seen a glint, a little flash of light away to our left-hand side, John Murray. It's the League Cup trophy coming down those stairs.
Yes, it is, and shoulder to shoulder, Bruno Gimoranch and Kieran Trippier are being closely followed.
They've got their hands on the Carabao Cup, as Dan Byrne and Will Ossula are.
I think you've just seen Isaac Hayden in here,
Emile Kraft blowing you kisses, Isaac!
LAUGHS
It's unbelievable, I've shared a dressing room with some of those players
that have been there a long time,
and I know exactly how much this means to them,
and I'm over the moon for them all.
Callum Wilson just going down there as well,
a cup winner now with Newcastle United.
I'm just looking to see who else we've got here.
Joel Linton is just behind us as well.
Andy Carroll over there.
Andy Carroll there, the unmistakable Andy Carroll is in on the act as well.
I think we're still waiting for Eddie Howe, aren't we, to come down the steps?
It's Jason Tingle who's coming down first, but they are still waiting.
He's got the plinth, Jason Tindall.
I'm trying to get Andy Carroll to come in here and say a few words, he's having none of it.
Come on, Andy!
He doesn't look...
Now he's suggesting that somebody might need to get the chequebook out.
LAUGHTER
The BBC's football editor is in the room, maybe we should ask.
Did he bring the cheque? Here he comes, here's Eddie Howe now,
the winning manager just walks past the TV camera,
he must feel like he could almost float down those steps,
and off he goes, quick steps down the Wembley steps,
followed by all of the various members of his coaching staff.
And we talked, didn't we, a lot about how, on a slot,
first opportunity to win his first trophy in England today,
but it slightly overlooks the fact that Eddie Howe has won his first major trophy.
And yes, he's won promotions, and yes, he's won the championship title,
and think of a trophy in that way,
but this is the start of potentially something big for Eddie Howe and
again I think we should make the point after the Saudi investment which is nearly four years ago
now when the Saudi backed buyout of the club took place. I think many Newcastle United supporters
just expected that the trophies would flow instantly but because of the financial restrictions etc etc
but because of the financial restrictions, etc, etc, it's taken as long as it has.
And maybe for Newcastle that's a good thing.
Yeah, maybe it is.
I think we spoke before the game about it and said that,
I hope if Newcastle don't win the trophy that they don't overthink things
and have a knee-jerk reaction and say,
Ed, he's not the man.
Well, now they've got that opportunity to go and back this guy,
cos now he knows how to get over the line.
I thought he played it absolutely perfectly today,
the tactics were spot-on, the substitutions were spot-on,
the way he went after Liverpool, many teams would have thought,
this Liverpool team, you can't go toe-to-toe with them,
but they did, and they knew they had the quality to hurt Liverpool,
and they did exactly that.
Great achievement for an English manager,
the qualities that he for an English manager, the qualities
that he brings as a manager and let's not understate those qualities because he's been
outstanding for Newcastle. Yes Liverpool at times have been hailed as the best team in Europe this
season but they've had a bad few days, a bad week and instead now Steve we've got the celebrations
on the pitch, the photo opportunity and on the
green stage. Yeah, you can't just have one trophy lift these days, guys. You've got to
have at least a few. By the way, if you were wondering how Stephen Warner got on trying
to get Andy Carroll, anyone who's seen that sort of meme of Steve McLaren waving to someone
trying to get them to come over and nothing happening, it was a little bit like that,
but it was a good effort. I will say this when the winners of the Cup competition are the
know, as I said, it's a club
that's so close to my heart.
You know, I went there as a 21
year old boy, and I kind of understand. I'm still a boy and I kind of understand. I'm still contracted, but I feel like
I've left there a man and to
see the transformation from
when I first joined and you
know, we didn't even have ice
baths and things like that.
Basic stuff to now is amazing
to see it. I'm just so happy
for the people of Newcastle.
There's a lot of great people
that work for the club, and I'm
just so over the moon for them.
Or you were talking about how
Eddie House still rings you and
still talks to you makes you feel part of it. The players there, your teammates, your the players. They're not going to be able to do that anymore. You were talking about
how Eddie House still rings you
and still talks to you makes
you feel part of it. The
players there, your teammates
your part of the family. They
make you feel part of the
family. That's obviously
central to them. Yeah, and as
said, I think the supporters as
well, you know, once once the
jury always a Geordie on this
said, I feel that you know the supporters gave me a great welcome when I think it's a great feeling. I think it's a great feeling. I think it's a
great feeling. I think it's a
great feeling. I think it's a
great feeling. I think it's a
great feeling. I think it's a
great feeling. I think it's a
great feeling. I think it's a
great feeling. I think it's a
great feeling. I think it's a
great feeling. I think it's a
great feeling. I think it's a
great feeling. I think it's a
great feeling. I think it's a
great feeling. I think it's a
great feeling. I think it's a
great feeling. I think it's a
great feeling. I think it's a
great feeling. I think it's a
great feeling. I think it's a
great feeling. I think it's a great feeling. I think it's a great feeling. I think it's a great feeling. I think it's a great feeling. I think it's a the
the first place when he's come from Leon.. We were in a relegation battle.
He came in and completely transformed the way we played and pushed us up the table.
I think obviously it's difficult with FFP.
It's been well documented with the club and the situation surrounding that.
But I think with this summer clearing it up,
obviously they unfortunately had to sell Elliott and Mintay last summer.
But I think with a clean bill of FFP health, I think that they can push on again next season, the
before the game. We played you one of his songs with some of the memories, some of the heart breaks for New Castle. This is
not that song. That one is
remember my name. Well,
goodness me, these New Castle
players as they don't have to
worry about that. If you could
tattoo the heart, that's where
the names have been said that
the whole squad will be in New
Castle folklore for many years
and said that they all deserve
it because that performance today was a fantastic performance and said not just the team. They've been fantastic. They've been fantastic. They've been
fantastic. They've been
fantastic. They've been
fantastic. They've been
fantastic. They've been
fantastic. They've been
fantastic. They've been
fantastic. They've been
fantastic. They've been
fantastic. They've been
fantastic. They've been
fantastic. They've been
fantastic. They've been
fantastic. They've been
fantastic. They've been
fantastic. They've been
fantastic. They've been
fantastic. They've been
fantastic. They've been
fantastic. They've been
fantastic. They've been fantastic. They've been fantastic. They've been fantastic. They've been fantastic. They've been the final game. It's a little bit of a surprise for the fans. The Liverpool end as
you would expect it's cut
final day. This is what happens
to the losers have all
disappeared away to the left
hand side. New Castle fans
dancing up and down the players
just in front of them. Some of
them have got the gold and
green glitter still draped over
their shoulders. John Murray. If
we were inside St James's Park,
you'd be able to see the words
of Kevin Keegan around the stadium. You can see the words of Sir Bobby Robson around the stadium, you can also see one sentence from Eddie Howe and I just think it's appropriate because it sums up so much of how
they've won the Cup today, it just says we are not here to be liked, we are here to compete.
Well yeah, that's what you've got to do if you're, if you mean to be a winner.
And this is his 163rd match in all competitions.
He's one of the longest serving managers of all of the 92 clubs.
And he's putting himself in a position there.
That's why he took this job, Isaac.
He had the opportunity, he didn't need to go to Celtic,
where he would have won trophies,
but to be part of this, there were risks attached
and he's still in the job.
Yeah, I think there was risks attached from both sides. I think from Newcastle's side
there's a new ownership coming in, employing Eddie obviously off the back of a relegation
with Bournemouth, but I think he backs himself, he's a humble guy, he works so, so hard, he's
one of the hardest working managers I've seen. You know, the amount of hours and time that he puts in with
his staff, not just him but his staff as well, it's a credit to him and he fully
deserves it and has said for me, I think now he's obviously going to be talked
about in the upper echelons of Newcastle managers and has said certainly for
English football and English managers, he's put himself in the map, which is fantastic for him.
This is the Football Daily Podcast with Steve Crossman.
Okay, let's hear from the Newcastle United manager.
Here he is, Eddie Howe.
So pleased with the players.
Under a lot of pressure today, under a lot of spotlight.
Of course, the length of time that we haven't won for.
Oh, no, no, no.
No, no.
No, no, no.
Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, Let's try that again. What was in that? I can smell some champagne. I can smell some champagne.
Let's try that again.
So yeah, good day.
I've forgotten where I was.
An unbelievable day and an unbelievable
performance from the players.
We had to be
our very best today and I think we were
to a man. You mentioned there that everyone
played well and I do think that was genuinely the case. I thought Dan Burn in
particular, you have to mention his goal, but not just his goal but his general play
was really good and with Fabian I thought they both defended really well.
A lot was said in the build-up about the fact that two years ago almost getting to the final
was sort of the big hurdle for Newcastle and also when you
compare it to when you two played in the league at Anfield a few weeks ago, what were the
lessons that you took from the final two years ago and also from that recent league meeting?
Well there's a few things we tweaked and we had to in our build up but not football related
really just staying in a different hotel, tweaking little things that could make a really
minute difference. We learned a
lot from the game against Liverpool, Anfield, recently. I think you learn
from every game. You probably learn more in defeat than you do in winning
sometimes and we tried to put it to use to help us in this game today but
the players deserve all the credit. I'm so pleased with this group because they are
so hard-working and professional. Hopefully this is the start of a successful period for us.
Everyone has talked so much about ending the 70 years since you last won a domestic competition.
How does it feel to have bought a great football club like Newcastle to end that record
and also to lead these players, be the man that's changed that asterisk, if you like, in the record book?
Yeah, it means everything to do it. I think when we came here we were fighting relegation so job number one was to try
and stay in the league after that we knew we were under pressure to win I
don't think we were gonna last long here if we didn't so that pressure is quite
unique for us we tried to enjoy it we tried to take it everything as it comes
we've taken the Cups really, we've tried to, especially the early rounds, really difficult, try to prioritise them and
yeah everyone's rewarded with this day. I'm just so pleased for the supporters
as well, what they've given me personally and the team this year and the other
years that we've been here has been magnificent. It's been a long wait for a
trophy and no one deserves it more than them. And hopefully not another 70 years
waiting for another one. As you say, muscle memory, you know,
the guys have gone over the line now, they know how to do it.
You guys know how to do it as a team, as a collective.
Yeah, hopefully not another 70 years.
But we're not really thinking about tomorrow yet.
I think let's enjoy tonight.
Everyone connected with the club deserves this moment.
All right, let's get some Liverpool reaction, shall we?
Runners up today.
Here's the Liverpool manager, Arna Slot.
The game was played in the way they wanted it to be played.
So I think this is one of the strongest teams when it comes to balls through the air,
winning headers, winning second balls. One of the hardest teams to face if you have to defend a lot
of set pieces and that's what we had to do today. Both goals of them came from balls through the air, so the first one a corner kick, second one a cross. They are better in that part
than we are and they prevented us to play the part. We are good at it.
How much of a factor was tiredness or fatigue, physically and mentally, after that exhausting
match against PSG in
midweek?
Mentally it's always difficult to say because that's hard to judge because I can't look
in the head of the players. What I do know is that physically this game wasn't that demanding
when it comes to running because we didn't have to press, because they didn't do build-up. And if they had a free kick it took probably
a minute before they took it because all the defenders went forward so it was an
intense game when it comes to jewels
but not intense when it came to running. So I don't think tiredness had anything
to do with us losing this game. It's just credit
to them that they played the game they are really good at and that's why they also
deserved to win this game.
Just finally, it's obviously been probably the toughest week for you as Liverpool boss
in what in contrast has been a serene season. I guess with all challenges in life it's how
you guys respond now for the rest of the season.
Yeah definitely. It's been a week especially the the last two games, where we were a big disappointment.
Different disappointments, where Tuesday I was only disappointed in the result, not in our performance.
Today I was disappointed in both. But we started the week off really well because we started the week with a 10-point lead and we ended the week with a 12-point lead.
So that is something positive to take, but we also know there are still nine games to be played. You always know if you go to the last stages of some tournaments
that the teams you face are getting harder and harder. Newcastle, if I look at all the
teams they've beaten to come to this final, and they've beaten us, they are the deserved
winner of this tournament.
Thank you, honor. Commiser congratulations, thanks for your time. Thank you, thank you.
And we can go down somewhere inside the tunnel.
Mats Verouki is there with some more reaction.
Joel Linton, thanks for joining us on the Football Daily.
Just talk us through that final then, ending 70 years' wait
for a domestic trophy for Newcastle United.
That's an unbelievable day, unbelievable feeling to be part of it and to break that 70 years
is so long.
And yes, we are really glad to do that and we hope we break it now and the club can go
on and on and win more titles in the future.
You have a very special relationship with the fans, so you understand just how important
this final was for them today and how much it meant and you could see that in the way
you played out there.
Yes, I feel part of them.
I lived the bad moments with them as well, bad moments in my career since I joined the
club the first two years and
to live this moment today is an unbelievable feeling and always when I step on the pitch I
try to do my best for them and to make them happy and it's a great feeling to give them the title.
Yes hopefully we are in Newcastle right now and I could enjoy
with them.
Well, 17 going under, 25 going through, through the glass ceiling. They've smashed it. Have
Newcastle United, Isaac, Ian, Steven John, thank you all very much indeed. Well, you
forget 1955 now. Football has changed a lot since then,
but at least for today, it's black and white again.
That's it for this episode of the Football Daily podcast.
On the next one, Mark Chaplin, Chris Sutton, Rory Smith and Theo Wolcott
will be with you for the Monday Night Club.
As always, thank you so much for listening.
