The Football Daily Podcast, Premier League Review with Rick Edwards.
Hello and welcome to the Premier League Review.
Finally back after the interminable international break.
And joining me to break down the weekend's action,
the Telegass Northern football writer Luke Edwards and former Premier League striker,
Clinton Morrison.
Evening fellas, how are we?
Solid six out of ten as usual.
Yeah, I reckon I'm about, well, we're coming straight off the back of that Liverpool City game.
You're not in a good place.
You're not in a good place.
One or two out of ten.
Yeah, I like that.
Absolutely fuming.
I don't blame you, mate.
I don't blame you.
I mean, we're just, well, we've got to start there, haven't we, really, at Anfield.
So Manchester City's first game since being found guilty of all the charges
related to breach of the Premier League's financial rules.
And City, in the end, very comfortable 3-0 winners against a 10-man.
Liverpool. So perfect start to the season. But brackets on the pitch.
Further brackets, not a perfect start off the pitch. And it was such a, we knew it was going to be a feverish atmosphere.
I think all eyes were on this game and fascinating to see how it played out, how city's players,
how city staff reacted, coats with the situation. And in the end, I'm not. I'm not. I'm not. I'm
what you think, but when Ryan Gravenberg got set off after 62 minutes, it sort of was game
over. And it was a real shame because it was quite, it was pretty tight. It was quite an exciting
game up till that point, Luke. Yeah, quite exciting. More because of the situation than
the game. The backstory to it or the backdrop. Yeah, but I mean, I would just like to say
thank you Liverpool for letting down the entire English football public who wanted to see. I know,
I know. Very rare that you play a game like this where you know everyone.
Everyone was united behind Liverpool today
and they managed to do fumble
and get spankering nil at home
Yeah the Graven Badger, I do agree with you
Because it's a really soft, it's a really soft red card as well
I don't think either of them
I mean, for me
The second one's a borderline yellow
But I don't think the first one
First one
The second one, you'd say on the second one
If you're on a yellow
You're, you know
And you're the wrong side of Jeremy Dockoo
Maybe just stay clear
but he's so deep inside his own half.
And then also what annoyed me was,
look, we all know,
Manchester City are going to approach this all with defiance.
We saw it from their supporters today.
We've seen it from the don't back down,
double down attitude of the irrefutable evidence.
They are going to be united in their defiance
against the rest of English football
that wants to see them punished.
And we saw that today.
But then, you know, they're already an unpopular team.
But when Gravenberch made the second foul,
Enzo Fernandez,
waving an imaginary yellow,
card at the referee.
They don't help themselves,
I mean,
he never helps himself.
I mean,
he seems to Revelyne
being the ultimate
pantomime villain.
But Liverpool let us all down
today, I'm afraid.
It was a tight game,
and I thought actually Liverpool
started the second half
were marginally the better
of the two teams.
But once the,
you know,
once the sending off happened,
Man City sort of went through the gears
and it just reminds you
of how, whatever they've done,
however they've done it,
they have built a fantastic football team.
And you've got Docu coming off
the bench you've got the best centre forward in europe in harland scoring the first two goals
not many teams can deliver them and i thought elliard anderson 116 million pounds signing this summer
was brilliant so as much as it pains us and it pains us all when we you know it's gonna it's gonna
sour this entire premier league season with these charges hanging over them but they were the better
team today and they won and they are if you take away all the charges and whatever the punishments
maybe. They are one of the two teams
for me who can win the Premier League this season.
I thought they were phenomenal in the second half.
They scored three
very, very good goals,
Clinton. No, they did, but you know what?
I blame
the referee. That's not a yellow card.
I'm not having the second one. I've seen so
many games where the first one, it's not even a yellow
code, the first one on L.A. Anderson. It's only
because he goes down holding his leg for about
a minute and the referee decides I'm going to give him
the second one. You can just give
Gravenberch a warning. I've seen it so
many times where people are on a yellow card.
It is never a yellow card.
And it don't help that all the city players run around the referee and straight away.
Exactly. He changes his mind and he gives him the second.
It's not because up until then.
Did Fernandez get a yellow for brandishing the...
No.
No.
Because the round earlier on, and someone got one from doing that.
So that's what I mean.
I just say sometimes with the referees, they make the wrong calls.
And I thought Liverpool were good at the start of the game.
And in that spell, particularly at Gravenberts,
and that spell just then before he got sound.
Well, Granbridge was Liverpool's best player today.
That's what I'm saying.
And Munoz was good on the rack.
They were causing problems and I thought they were really good.
And I thought they were going to score.
That was a spell where they were on top.
And then as soon as it goes down to 10 minutes,
it's always difficult.
And when you can bring on players like Docu, who's outstanding,
he's goals, he changed the game for City.
Because they didn't really look,
I'm looking at him thinking who's going to break down the door and stuff like that.
Harlan's missed a good opportunity,
but you can't give that player to opportunity because he will punish you.
And you know what? Liverpool've got three of their best players so far this season missing.
So Bozlai, Isaac, Gapot. It's a different game.
Liverpool can't afford to have three of their best players missing
when they're playing against one of the best teams around at the moment.
But they did score three superb goals.
And I think Docu, he was the difference maker for me.
His goal's fantastic.
How many times have you seen him cut inside on his right foot?
Yeah, that goal is a goal he likes to score, isn't it?
Exactly. Exactly.
I just, it was interesting, wasn't it?
the kind of the feeling watching the game
and you realise that this is the feeling
that you're going to have watching every city game
for the rest of this season
or until there is some sort of resolution
because you sort of feel, I don't know,
like a kind of an anger,
but you don't really know where to direct the anger
because it's, as they said, in commentary actually,
like none of the players fault.
It's not Enzo Moreska's fault.
You just, so you kind of have this slightly nebulous
fury
and you want them to suffer
even though you know it's not really fair
for them to suffer
and it's just a really really horrible
it's just a horrible set up now
for the rest of the season
it's a massive stain on the Premier League
yeah but that's the problem
I think the Premier League has suffered
reputational damage from this
and I think mentioned City have
I mean what is the opposite of sports washing
you know that phrase that's bandied around
where clubs in you know
nation states
improve the image of their own countries and project soft power through football club.
Can we coin our own?
Can we call it sports soiling?
But that's what it's done.
I think small soil has got a chance.
Sports, they have sports soil.
They're sports soil.
And it does make you, it makes you feel cold.
It really does.
And there's been all this hype building up to this game.
And I'm sorry, Manchester City fans, because Rick, you're right, it's not their fault.
No, they are going to defend their part.
Yeah.
But they're going to behave like they did today.
you know, they brought the inflatable bananas,
which is a reference to the last time they were in the second tier
when they made that popular in the 1980s.
And they're going to dig in and they're going to show unity.
But for the rest of us, it's really hard to watch Manchester City at the moment.
And it's certainly basically impossible for us to celebrate them.
Yeah.
And I think that's really, really sad when you've got this fantastic football team
who have been the dominant force in English football,
certainly under Pep Guaalioda for 10 years,
to now have this feeling when you're watching them
where you just don't like them.
And that's a problem.
That is going to be a problem for the rest of the season.
Every win is going to feel empty, I think, for the wider public.
It's a strange thing, Clinton, actually, for me, as a Liverpool fan,
because although, you know, across the last 10 years,
Guardiola Klopp, of this period,
the defining kind of rivalry in the Premier League,
I've never really
I've never really hated
City I don't know like there's plenty of
trust me there's plenty of clubs I really
really do loat and
and City just haven't been one of them
like I can't really explain that
and now that has that has changed
yeah it's because of everything that's
going on and but the one thing
I would say is you know these city players
because of all the outside noise that is going on
they'll have a they'll be close knit
together now.
And that was sort of siege mentality, isn't it?
Yeah, it is, it is.
Us against the world, isn't it?
And because you know what?
And you know what?
A lot of people were asking me, is this the, I thought it would be the perfect game
because everyone knows when you go to Amfield, it is going to be hostile as anything.
And if they could get through the first 15, 20 minutes of that game, which they did,
and it was hostile, then I thought, you know, they'd grow into the game and they did start
growing into the game.
And you know what they've got?
They've got, like, characters and leaders on the pitch.
You lot just alluded to it.
Elliot Anderson, wow, what a sign in.
I know they paid that much money for him,
but he could turn out to be one of the best signs I've seen for a very long time.
He runs the midfield.
And I know Newcastle fans will probably scream and say,
I know he went to Forrest before that,
but Newcastle had to sell him.
Do you know what I mean?
Exactly.
Well, that's the problem, isn't it?
That is the problem.
That is the whole problem what Manchester City have done,
is that we can debate the rules
and say the rules need to be looked at and the rules need to be wrong.
But other clubs have had to abide by those rules,
and Newcastle have to sell their best academy graduate.
for a generation for basically they got 15 million pounds
and spent 20 million pounds on a goalkeeper they didn't want from Nottingham Forest
to abide by those rules.
This summer, Elliot Anderson's gone to Manchester City for 116 million.
So that's where the problems occurred.
That is why there is a resentment.
And I don't quite know whether city supporters have grasped that
that it is the fact that other clubs have had to make really difficult,
painful decisions to comply with PSR.
And they didn't bother.
and then they hid it
and then they didn't cooperate
so that is the problem
there's so much ill feeling
that has built up
for a variety of reasons
we don't like cheats in this country anyway
I mean that that is kind of the English
mentality or rightly or wrongly
and it's just yeah
you know you want people wanted them to lose
and I think you know Clinton you're right
did you see their body language
when the players came onto the pitch Clinton at the start
they just looked like steely jawed
do you know what I mean they look so determined
and it will fuel them
It will fuel them this season because they're winners.
And they won't mind all the outside noise.
You made a good point, Lou, where you said,
I think it will be them in Arsenal.
I thought at the start of the season,
Arsenal would win it by about seven, eight, nine points.
I think it would go right down to the wire
between Man City and Arsenal now.
But presumably, I mean, if I'm in charge at the Premier League,
you cannot, you cannot have a situation
where Manchester City win the Premier League this season.
you just can't.
Can you imagine?
I mean,
it would just be...
The whole far,
it'll turn a whole season into a fast rip.
Yeah.
That's the problem.
And everyone knows that.
And everyone knows that.
So...
But you've got due process.
They can't rush it.
And we know that Manchester City delay
and delay and they challenge.
They challenge every legal loophole,
every procedure.
And that's why it's taken so long
to get to this point as it is.
Whether they can do that in the appeal process,
I don't know.
But we need a resolution by the end of the season.
Otherwise, this whole season is going to be a farce.
Yeah.
Erling Harlan said, every single person is part of Manchester City, every fan.
This is a lovely moment that will stay with us for a long time.
It was tough, it was hard, but we showed amazing character from back to front, so proud of everyone.
I'm not sure I could characterize that as a lovely moment.
I know what he means, but it's not a lovely moment.
From their perspective, it probably is, because they've all been away on international duty.
And they've all been reading about it, and you can imagine there.
they've been talking to each other.
And they will be concerned.
They will be worried.
They will be.
You can pretend as much as you want, Clinton.
You can block it all out, can you?
But if they know the possibility of those star big name,
world-class international footballers,
if Manchester City are relegated,
which is a possibility,
what does that mean for their future?
So they will have been worried about it.
I'm sure they would.
You'd think about it when they're on international duty.
The players would have definitely been thinking about the situation.
But when they come back,
they probably would have had a meeting.
and the senior pros would have got everyone together.
I had a meeting,
and as you have that mentality,
it's us against everyone else at the moment.
And you know what?
As a group, the players,
you can only take care of the business
what you do on the pitch.
And that is what Man City players will do.
And that's what they did this afternoon
against Liverpool.
That does make me wonder about how Semenio,
Gaye Anderson feel.
The players that have chosen to join
City.
knowing that at some point there is going to be a reckoning at that club.
It's interesting, isn't it?
But Man City have been so belligerent about it, haven't they?
The body of irrefutable evidence.
I mean, that is the message they've been sending to everyone.
Yeah, and I guess they will have, yes, that's the message.
We're going to win this.
We're going to win this.
There's nothing to worry about.
And they went, oh, how much you pay me a week?
Oh, brilliant.
Yeah, it's clearly what they told, Pet Guadioa as well.
Yeah, it's going to be.
to be really difficult.
It's going to be, and yeah, a stain on the Premier League is the best way I can describe it.
The other thing about this game was there was a kind of, there was an excitement because it was,
because it was Liverpool and it felt so sort of weirdly like ironic or appropriate or however
you want to look at it, that it would be Liverpool, the first game, that the team that
has arguably been most sort of affected.
That's an argument we don't need to have now.
But this Liverpool team is not the Liverpool team that you would like to have played
them in this circumstance.
Because the Liverpool team under Yergen Klopp
could absolutely blow a team away at Anfield in sort of 15 minutes.
And, you know, City had been on the end of that kind of game.
And this Liverpool team, I mean, they're not doing that to anyone, are they?
You know what?
I think it's a, they're not doing it, but you know what?
They were in this game.
They were in it, but they couldn't.
I know what you're saying.
They were still creating chances, though.
Like even the one second half where young Kumas has gone through.
I thought I had a good game, caused a lot of problems.
But I know what you're saying.
If you look at the likes of young Coombas,
he's probably someone now who would be coming off the bench
and getting 10, 15 minutes.
And of course, where Liverpool are at in the moment,
the injuries they have, and on the recruitment side,
he has to start.
I don't think it's even necessarily that.
I don't think, you know, with a full strength team,
I don't think Liverpool are...
How much money if they spent, Rick?
No, exactly.
I think it's a rebuilding at Liverpool.
It's going to take time.
I actually think they're getting the pieces
you know, and it's going to take a lot of time.
You look at Virgil Van Dyck,
how many years has he got left?
You've bought the youngster Jacques
who's going to learn off Virgil Van Dyck.
So I just think...
Yeah, he looks good.
Yeah, he's a player, by the way.
He's a Rose Royce.
He'll be a very good sign.
And I like Munoz, you know.
I like the right wing.
I think he was good.
He was good.
I like him, you know.
I like him.
He's tenacious.
Because O'Reilly, a lot of problems
is a good player.
So I see a lot of positives.
I understand they lose free no.
But Mancic can do that to anyone
with 10 men.
It's so difficult
and they've got players
that they can bring off the bench
I don't see a lot of positives
I don't see a lot of positives
No I just want to stick
because it's Rick
God is Rick
I don't know you did
Where was Alexander Isak today
Was he
He's injured
Oh
He's injured again is he
All right
Of the three players
That Liverpool have spent a fortune on
Yes
Isak is the one
I think
It'll probably be all right
I look at verse
I look at that
Barker and I think good God.
It's happened to verse because I don't like to dig out players.
I've never been one to do.
I'm watching him today.
He's got so much ability and when he should shoot, he passes.
And when he passes, he should pass.
He shoots.
And I'm like, come on, it's decision making.
Do you know what?
There was that, there was a ball that was drilled, admittedly,
drilled into him by Grabbing Birch at one point in the first half.
And he took a heavy touch.
I mean, heavy touch.
is cut it like
if I took that touch
I'd be disappointed
like it went a mile
from it was embarrassing
I was like you're supposed
to be a little little wizard
Liverpool spent just as much money
as Manchester City have
and they've done it really badly
yeah well
and it used
and that's happened
just in the last sort of
two years really
because Liverpool's recruitment
used to be excellent
they spent a lot of money
and got it wrong
and they went for that really ambitious
just won the league.
We're going to go out.
We're going to get one of the best
centre forwards in the Premier League in Alexander
Isak.
We're going to go out and get the best player in Germany.
That might still work out that signing,
to be fair.
I know you don't want it to, but it might.
If he stays fit,
that would turn that to a very good signing,
yeah, because he started the season well
with his goals already.
It's a big if.
It's a big if with him.
Verts, I don't know.
Barcola is too soon, I guess.
Yeah, you can't judge Barcola yet.
He has to get you soon, right?
It is, but I'm worried.
I know you're, yeah, I can understand why you're worried
after the three or four games we've seen him in
but I think it's, yeah, it's way too early to judge him.
I do think he's got the potential,
but I understand why you're worried
because you're watching it today
and you're thinking, come on, you're the big signing.
Imagine spending that amount of money on potential.
I know, yeah.
It's crazy.
Yeah, I know. It's crazy.
Okay, let's talk about some football
where it's a bit less complicated.
A lot of goals in the games earlier on the day.
Another point on the board for Hull.
to all draw with Everton.
Everton also unbeaten.
Oliver Glasner lost on his return to Selhurst Park.
His old side Crystal Palace came from behind to beat his new side,
Notting Forest 3-1.
And honestly, if you watched the first of 40 minutes of this game,
Forest absolutely battered Palace.
Forests were really good.
So how they ended up losing.
And actually, does that save slash, I guess you've got to say,
they miss from Liam Dallat when they'll won their own.
It's a brilliant moment.
It's a brilliant moment.
It is a good moment.
But I mean,
Forest should have been clear.
And then actually ended up that they could have lost by more than three one.
Can we just pause on the Dillat miss?
Yes.
He's got,
I mean,
he could just stroke it in,
but he comes at it and he goes,
do you know what?
I'm going to take the net off here.
I'm going to absolutely,
I'm going to do this in style.
It's what he's thought in his head is,
I'm going to emphatically,
smash this ball home
and he puts
and kicks his strength
into the goalkeeper's face.
No, yeah.
You're right.
You didn't even let the ball bounce
and just side footing it
into the bottom forena.
There's a lot of options there
Clinton, isn't it?
There's a lot of options.
There is a lot.
But one thing I will say,
I was watching a game
and I was punching
the cushions in my house
when I was watching it
because Palace were absolutely
defending in the first half an hour.
Terrible.
You're right.
They should have been outside,
Forrest.
Forest should have been about three or four of four of a lot.
I mean, Palace were bad, but Forrest were good.
Yeah, Forrest were good.
Forest fans would be scratching their head thinking,
how have we come away losing this game, 3-1?
Because I don't...
Listen, Palace improved in the second half for sure.
But you know what?
I would say, as well,
still Palace's second goal.
I think there's a slight,
and I'm a big palace, man, you know that?
Hambole.
Because I think...
Yeah, well...
Kahlia's arm and it goes in.
And you know what?
But I'm happy that the goal stood, obviously.
But if I was...
If it went against Palace...
If you're Forest, the memory of the Nico Williams goal that wasn't given for handball.
It doesn't matter how many times I watch that, I can't see it.
Versus this goal getting given when it does appear attached.
I'm just like, that would drive you out of the wall.
Yeah, you'd be fuming.
You would be fuming.
Because as I said, I'm happy because Pallis got to win,
but I can understand why Forrest fans will feel agrees.
Because that makes it to you want.
The thing is that Mr. Maranakis tends to take VAR mistakes in his stride,
like he's been relaxed about it.
Probably won't hear anything more about it.
Well, Clinton, what did you make of the reaction to Glasna?
Because you know I did this.
I switched on the start to like think, I want to, I want to see his reaction.
And he just got a standing ovation.
Yeah.
And it was all warm and cuddly and nice.
And then there was a bit of sacks in the morning later on.
Yeah, it was nice.
But that was just a bit of like friendly ban.
He's been Palace's best ever manager.
He's bought three trophies to the football club.
So you can't, I don't understand why you would want to boo him.
He's been very good.
And now he's moved on to Nottingham Forest and you wish him all the best.
But you take the three points and you send him back up the motorway, which they've done.
But they did give him a good round of applause though.
And he deserved that.
And I think he will be a success at Forest as well.
On the Liam Dallat thing, did you ever find yourself in a situation, Clinton,
where you've had a...
It's easier to score
than it is to conspire, to miss it.
Yeah, I'm not even going to sit here and deny it to you.
Yeah.
There's been times where...
Is it just rush the blood to the head?
Yeah, you're like...
But no, but what I've done,
I've had that before, but I've not blazed it like him.
I've waited to side foot it,
but I've quit on the top of the side foot
and it's gone over the bar.
It's a bad miss.
And you know what?
He's going to...
As a centre forward, you replay that for the next week or so
until the next game,
until you get your next goal
because it's in the back of your mic
because if Forrest's goal
tune you up then
I think it's game over then
it's difficult for Pallas
to get back into that game
so yeah he'll be devastated
Liam DeLap
and it was a frustrating afternoon for him
I want him to be a success at Forrest
because of the difficult time
he had at Chelsea and he needs a bit of confidence
he needs a bit of love I think
as Clinton said he had a rough time at Chelsea
didn't work out for him
I just want to say that would be the best saved
by a goalkeeper's face this season
that is
A goalkeeper will not pull off a bit of face save.
Yeah, I do like a face save.
You know what I reckon, Luke, I'm going to put my neck on the line now.
I think he'll come good at Forrest.
I think because he's the main man and plays week and week out,
and he's got a good manager in Glasna.
I think he will come good.
I'd like him to because, you know, he was,
basically, before he went to Chelsea,
people were excited about him.
We had one really good season at Ipswich,
so we didn't, maybe a bit hesitant.
No, I know, I know, but he was a young striker on one good season.
You think, okay, he can build.
on this. And he's a young English
striker and everyone's thinking who's going to replace
Harry Kane? Because if you think about it, who's the next
English striker that can replace Harry Kane?
There's not a youngster coming through, is it? He's the next one.
Yeah, it's due betting. You're right. A little bit of tactical
knowledge there from Rick. Jude in the false nine.
Thank you. Thank you. Love it. He's done his homework.
Right, we're going to talk the best of
yesterday's action in the moment, including Spurs'
his late drawer at Manchester United and Chelsea's
big win. But, first,
First, here's your half-time teaser, and this is an absolute gimmy.
I cannot, this is so easy.
I'm annoyed.
In Chelsea's 5-1 victory over-born, with Jordan Henson scored twice assisted once.
At 36 years old, he's the oldest player to be directly involved in three goals in a Premier League game
since a 37-year-old did it in 2022, but who was that 37-year-old?
We're back in a sec.
Wayne Rooney here.
If you want to hear more from me, head over to the Wayne Rooney Show on BBC Sounds today
to listen back to chat I have with the likes of Bruno Fernandez
and Jordan Pickford
and plenty more stories from the dressing room.
Before I saw you guys playing so many times
and I was following the club for so long.
Just coming to the club was already a dream come through,
a privilege, never saw or dreamed about
being the captain of the club. I just wanted to play for it.
Portugal have given me two ways later to football.
They've searched the Wayne Rooney show
on BBC Sounds and subscribe now.
That way, when my new series Can You Beat Wayne Rooney comes out,
you'll be the first to get every episode
as soon as they're released.
On the Football Daily podcast, Premier League review with Rick Edwards.
Welcome back to the Premier League review on the Football Daily.
Before the break, I gave you the easiest halftime teas we've had.
36-year-old Jordan Henson scored twice, assisted once for Chelsea yesterday.
Oldest player to be directly involved in three goals in the Premier League game.
Since a 37-year-old did it in 2022.
Can you name that 37-year-old?
I don't want you to get this right, Luke, so I'm going to go to Clinton.
Clinton?
Oh my gosh.
My mind, you said it's easy.
This is like, it almost couldn't be easier, in my opinion.
Is he retired now?
No, well, no, he's not.
That should tell you.
So how old is he now?
He must be there.
37 in 2020.
40, 41?
No, so 41, yeah.
He's 41.
41 and he's, he's not retired?
No.
No.
Ronaldo.
I said don't answer.
Well, I've answered.
I didn't want you to get involved.
Did you not have it either?
No, I had it.
Yeah, I had it all along, right.
Yeah, you know, I'm so annoyed that I've talked to you through the age as well.
I can't believe Ronaldo.
Was he in the Premier League in that year?
Yeah, United.
He scored a hatchet against Norrie.
Oh, he came back.
Oh, he came back.
Yeah, yeah.
And I had a lovely time with Eric Ten Hark.
Yeah.
Well, I think that's staggeringly easy.
Let's talk about much United.
then a late Dominic Solanke
goal saw Spurs rescue a point
I think a deserve point at Old Trafford
not a point that massively helps
either Spurs or United
and you know the
the booing at full time
from the United fans kind of
you know tells a story really like
it does I think it's a far better point for Tottenham
far better point
because they're away from home
they're down to 10 men
and the can I mean they're
not as bad away from home and also they were
they were the better team. Well yeah so it's a better point
I mean it was a better performance
well hang on if you're the better team and you only get a point aren't you disappointed?
But yeah they could have lost there were one-nil down in stoppage time
with ten men. All right. And poor deserby's face I mean he was going through the ringer
on the touchline I mean I thought Tottenham I said Tottenham would be okay eventually
I did I have said that. Well I think if you watch that game
there's a lot of evidence to suggest they will be okay yeah they were good they missed
so many chances
and they ran all over Manchester United.
They look like they've got speed, they've got legs,
got athleticism, all the things that you need in a deserby team.
They probably need someone to put the ball in the back of the net regularly.
I think that is the major glaring weakness,
which is always a major glaring weakness in any team at any level
that doesn't have someone to put them in the back of the net.
But I thought they would be really good.
I think it was probably their best performance of the season.
And they're going away to Spain, aren't they,
on a warm river training camp,
which is a euphemism for team bonding.
I believe they're in Marbea.
Going away away.
This week.
Have they not got a game next weekend?
It's unconventional Clinton,
but Roberto is taking them away to Marbea.
Wish I was still playing.
A little tear up.
Little tear up.
I reckon they might have one of Tuesday off.
No, no, I thought Tottenham were good,
and I think that that's far more positive.
To make the serious point,
I think it's far more positive for them.
The Manchester United, who I thought,
were really particularly.
and lackluster and slow
and they don't look like they've got any speed
they don't look like they've got any legs
I'm not entirely sure what the plan is at the moment
and yeah I thought they were rubber
because they were starting to look good at the end of
last season and the only
the only thing that's changed is
Casamiro I don't get it
and then they've signed Tillamins
the interim manager got the permanent job
that's what's changed yeah
dude is I'm looking at it and I'm thinking
centre forwards a problem. I know him
Bremont was playing through the middle and he scored, but
Chesco's obviously injured at the moment.
Is he going to be that number
nine who can get you the goals?
Well, I don't think Michael Carrick rates him.
There you go. Because that's why he's been playing
Cunia through the middle and Rashford on the left-hand side.
But they struggle. Even defensively,
they're struggling. Tottenham,
Tottenham be disappointed. It is a good point for
Tottenham, but the amount of four or five
clear-cut chances. They're not even
half chances. Clear-cutting the first off
that they didn't take. They'll be disappointed, but
Mani and I have a big problem because let me tell you,
they're running games they've got coming up.
Well, they've got Athletics Go to Madrid and Leeds next, don't they?
Yeah, yes, yes.
That's what I mean.
So it's not easy games, have they, coming up?
And even after that, the three or four games after different.
They had an easy start, Clinton.
On paper, they supposedly had an easy start.
Exactly.
When everyone sat down whenever we get it?
When do we get it?
Is it June or July anyway, whenever we get it?
Everyone looked at it and thought,
oh, that's a really kind start for Michael Carrick.
Yeah, that's going to get them build up into the season nicely.
And he's gone bad.
Six points from six games,
worse start to the league season since 86, 87.
Yeah, I was at the Fulham game.
Remember when we did this when I was at the Fulham game?
It was the same performance.
Lackluster.
You're thinking, Luke's right.
Players can't get there and close down or play with intensity.
If the one thing you're not having a good game,
I would always say as a footballer,
the one thing you can do is work hard.
That's a gimmie.
You have to work hard and, you know,
give those fans something to cheer about.
And even in yourself, you know when you're not playing well.
but run around
but they're nowhere near it
at the moment
and the pressure will mount
not on the players
on Michael Carrick
Of course
They're going to cost
they're going to cost
another manager's job
both players
And the problem is
It's going on for so long
Then yeah
For so long
Quite an interesting reaction
From Deserby
To Benton Kerr's red card
A person
I kiss it Rodrigo
And they say thanks
Because it's clear
It's a mistake
From Rodrigo
know because it's not the right reaction in football but now Tottenham needs to react.
I think in that moment in 10 players maybe we played with more courage, we played with
more energy and we changed again the game and from a long time Tottenham played without
this blood, this character and they want now I am the coach and I want to see this
character every game. Just with the quality we
can't win the games.
With the qualities, with the character, with the right energy,
I think we're going to win many games and we're going to score many goals.
Let's deal with the red card then.
Not often a manager thanks this player.
I know it's crazy.
I know that you can't do what Benton Kerr did.
I think Luke Shaw's reaction is laughable.
I think he's raised his hands and pushed him first.
If that's just two yellow cards, I don't think anyone is complaining, are they?
I agree.
I agree.
I think it's two yellow cards.
I don't like Luke Shaw's reaction.
I'm glad tossing kept him up.
He was trying to go down and he managed to hold him up.
I don't like that.
It's two players that are, it's a game, there's passion there.
Yeah, Benton Corp shouldn't have done what he.
He puts his head in, but like to describe that as a head.
As he's standing up, he's getting to his feet.
He's just been shoved to the floor and he gets to kind of spring up.
Yep.
And then that sort of takes the momentum in his fate.
And it's not a flying headbut.
He hasn't pulled his head back and nutting him.
If you're going to send him off, you've got to send Luke Shaw off.
And if you don't, as you just said, you give both of them yellow cards.
Well, that's the thing.
I'm not saying that Shaw should be sent off.
No, no.
No, it's two yellows.
It's two yellow.
Oh, right.
Yeah, yeah, exactly.
And Shaw's lucky because Shaw sprints over.
Mm.
With aggression.
Yeah.
Like he's ran after him
Yeah
And sent him flying to the floor
Yeah
So he shoved him on the shoulders
But because he hasn't made contact with his facial area
That's that's fine
Well
Yeah because it's like a big shove
Versus a sort of like a gentle
Half-hearted
Head to head caress
Yeah
Yeah
Yeah
Yeah well so there's
And then there's a there's a video I've seen
Of McGuire
Waving bye to Bentichor
Oh you've seen it
You've seen it
Waving him by
And then you sort of think to yourself, Harry,
you conceded last late on.
Now's not the time, mate.
Now we're,
do it after they get.
No, because your centre-back partner
is about to get sort of weirdly ragged old
by Dominic Slanky,
who's half fallen over.
So it's,
but that sums up Manchester United, doesn't it?
It's all the little bit, we're back,
we're Manchester United,
good times are back,
we're on the recovery,
and then they go back into decline again.
And yeah,
I don't, I don't,
I don't think it looks good for Michael Carrick.
No.
I was feeling pretty low at the start of this podcast
and actually talking about United
and their failings and struggles.
That's cheered me up a little bit, so thank you.
Playing at home for Spurs has been such an issue this season.
Shall I tell you, who has won a league match
at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this season?
Newcastle, Astonville, Haguas and that's it.
And people that have had concerts there
as well.
Yeah.
I guess everyone's a winning there.
Chelsea,
a great result.
2-0 up after three minutes.
Thrashbourne with 5-1.
Jail Pedro scored a couple.
Jordan Henson scored a couple.
And, you know,
it wasn't quite this,
but people felt like
Jordan Henson was being signed
as a guy who,
good to have in a dressing room,
good to maybe come on,
you know,
if you were trying to hold on
in a game for the last sort of 15 minutes or whatever.
But second start in a row and was fantastic.
He was brilliant.
To be fair, he was outstanding.
The goal, the first goal he scores is a fantastic finish.
The way he just whips it across him into that far corner.
And then the free kick, I'm watching it.
I'm thinking, Cole Palmer's going to take this.
And then they say after that in training, Jordan Henderson has been whipping them.
And Cole Palmer in his interview after says, I said to Jordan,
What flag are we going to run to celebrate?
That is just brilliant.
And when Henderson whips it.
You know, people might call me crazy.
And, yeah, at the last World Cup,
a lot of people were questioning whether Henderson goes.
Henderson, with that performance,
and if he keeps playing like that,
should be in and amongst the England squad.
I know Luke will be, I know Luke will look at me now and be like,
I understand, and it might be the first time me and him have a disagreement,
but I mean, on the, I understand what you're saying.
In the conversation.
I don't think he's in the conversation to be in an amount.
amongst the squad, not a starter, if you know what I mean.
He's fine to be in the conversation.
Yeah, yeah.
Not a starter.
Totally not a starter.
I have no problem with being in the conversation.
That's all right.
I'm glad I haven't.
I think judging, also, if you're going to take Kobe Manu to the World Cup
and then just not play him, then surely Henderson would be ahead of Manu.
Manchester Nighter fans would be screaming at me, but I don't care.
But then you've got Alex Scott who's emerged, haven't you?
Yeah, he's been good.
Garner's in there.
So in the conversation, in the conversation fine.
and Henderson, you have to look at the job he did for Brentford last season as well.
Yeah.
And he's clearly, he's showing there at Chelsea, like you said, Clinton,
brought in to be a good leader to sort out a difficult dressing room.
Well, he's showing that he's still got a lot to offer on the pitch as well.
So, yeah.
At what point do we start to worry a little bit about Bournemouth?
Now?
Yeah, haven't won in the...
I thought it might be now.
I haven't won the Premier League.
Alex Scott injured, other injuries,
and European football to deal with.
with as well,
yeah, it could get a bit ugly for them, couldn't it?
Yeah, it's got all of the ingredients of a bad season,
that injuries, new managers come in,
have overachieve for a prolonged period of time,
and the injuries are key players as well.
Marco Rose hasn't got a win yet.
They do look a little bit vulnerable,
and these things snowball.
So it's the bad start of the season,
managers left.
And you've got to remember as well,
when you go back into the context,
the summer before that,
they lost four of their best players.
They lost their entire back four.
They then lose Semenio in January.
They then lose the manager.
That's a lot to overcome in a short period of time.
And you're almost on a fan class going in there.
Yeah.
Ariola did so well and they ended the season so brilliantly last year.
But Europe is a problem for these teams, Rick.
It's the same.
It's the same.
Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest last season.
Both struggled.
Newcastle struggled with Europe.
Sundland are struggling.
struggling this season. They've got exactly the same
problems, picking up injuries,
key players gone, then you've got the extra games of
Europe, the squad becomes stretched.
The only one who's not struggling, Luke,
is Brighton, isn't it? But I don't think they're playing
as much, because they look down there. Well, Brighton is just phenomenal
though, I mean. Yeah, exactly. Yeah, but I
suspect they will have a dip out. It's amazing that we don't really,
we've not even mentioned Brighton, because at this
point, you're just like, I've done what more to say.
They're really good.
Well, they backed up beating Arsenal. They won all
the headlines for that, doesn't it? Suddenly everybody
sits up and takes notice of Brighton again
because they beat Arsenal but they've been doing this for so long
I mean they had a bad start to the calendar year
they're in a bad run of form
but they've been brilliant for a long period of time now
and I think as I said on the last podcast
the question we've all got to have for Brighton now is
can they get top four top five can they get into the Champions League
but I think Europe will catch up on them as well
I agree with you I do agree love
I think you know
separating out sort of club
loyalties
if you're a football fan
you should love the idea of Brighton getting Champions League.
But it's super.
Yeah, in the same way I love Bournemouth,
the same way I love Bournemouth getting in the way.
Completely.
Just any, like, those kind of teams that you feel like
are doing it like quote-unquote in the right way as well.
Just it's great.
I love it.
But it is, it's just squad depth, isn't it?
Squad depth, when you've got European football.
For all of those, as you said to Bormaf and what you were saying earlier,
you know what?
Borough have actually played reasonably well.
But when you're playing well and not getting results,
that's a big problem because when you're going to have a dipping form
and you start losing matches and you will have, you're going to struggle.
And I think Luke made a good point.
No, Scott, who's good for England, who's good for England,
been outstanding for Bournemouth.
It's going to be out, I think, for the next three or four weeks.
And then also who they're missing is croupie, junior croupies.
Exactly.
Yeah, yeah.
He's outstanding young centre forward.
So they've got a lot of good players missing.
And it's hard.
They've got game, what?
They'll go Thursday, Sunday, Thursday, Sunday for the next couple of weeks.
It's difficult.
We've mentioned Spurs and Bournemouth yet to win this season.
Same goes for Fulham, and they're 1-0 up in the 87th minute at Ipswich
and still managed to lose at Portman Road.
Third win the season for Ipswich.
You compare it to the last Sunday in the Premier League.
I think you've taken them 19 games to win three.
And I think this is right.
All three of their wins are coming as stoppage time goals.
Wow.
It feels like, I don't know.
I'm not friends with any Ipswich fans.
I don't know if it's switch fans are now on board with Gary O'Neill.
The sense that I got when he was appointed was a bit like,
I think he's doing, I mean, if he's not winning them over now,
then I don't know when he will.
They've got nine points.
It's a hell of a start for Ipswich.
Like, I thought they would struggle.
All the teams that have got promoted.
Is it as good as whole start now?
is it as good as Hull Star?
Yeah, I think they're ahead of you.
Have they both got both nine, both got nine points.
Yeah, sorry.
No, Hull have got, yeah, it is actually.
Is it nine?
Yeah.
So we've all sat there, we've all sat there and said Huller, brilliant,
and they're breath of fresh air and I've had this brilliant stuff.
We've got to say that about Hipswich now, don't we?
Yeah.
I'm used to live in Hipsch, so I do have a bit of an affinity for the club.
And, yeah, I think you're right in what you're assessment.
You know, you lose a really popular manager in McKenna who did that weird thing of
leaving having got them promoted.
And you were worried, but they did follow the Sunderland model,
which was they went and went out and built an entirely new team
specifically designed for the Premier League.
But what Gary O'Neill has obviously got into them,
and you've hinted at it there, is, you know,
they're going right until the end.
And, I mean, that is such a powerful weapon to have as well,
because when you're in losing situations later in the season,
you will believe you can get out of them.
The opposite of true is if you keep,
throwing away later.
So, Bournemouth, for example,
they are getting themselves
into good positions in games,
or they were until the Chelsea match,
then they're throwing away points.
They're scoring early goals,
and then they're throwing away points.
Ipsons have got that opposite of that,
in which they are finding a way
to win games, close games, late on.
So long may it continue for them.
And I think he's a good manager, isn't he?
He's decent.
Yeah, I just think they probably wanted a different name.
But yeah, it's a good appointment.
I guess it's the feeling that's not a particularly
fashionable person of bringing in.
Because you say, like, McKenna was
very popular and had done a
really good job.
I mean, not in the premier league.
In nicest, good terms, they wanted a sexy manager.
You know, like someone.
We all want a sexy manager.
Everyone wants a sexy managers, aren't they?
But it's hard to attract them.
But I tell you one thing, Luke,
where you might know,
is Arbola under pressure
because that was their next two games,
I think they've got Coventry and hope.
I think no question is.
They've got Hoan Coventry, I think, next.
If they don't get anything out of them,
he's been in trouble.
He'll be gone, I think, if they don't, if they don't get someone.
If he loses the next two, I think he might be gone.
Loses the next two, I think he does go.
Because you've got to get points on those games, didn't you?
But he's not making himself popular either, as he?
He's a bit of a, he's a bit of a, he's a bit of a,
he's a bit of a, he gives it the big I am.
I hope he doesn't say he was at Ramadrid as the manager,
the manager, because he was terrible, wasn't he?
Yeah, but he was a very,
bad coach there.
So that's the problem.
I don't think he's particularly popular.
So he's had, again, he's had the opposite reaction.
When he came in at full and people are probably like,
oh, right, okay, yeah, yeah, yeah.
It's all right, happy enough for that.
Yeah, to some extent, yeah.
Yeah.
Sexiest manager in the league this season.
Ooh.
There's a question.
I mean, like, the way he plays, the way they've been playing.
Hertzler?
Herzler?
No, he means football.
Or we're going on looks or football?
No, not looks.
I think I'm going a bit of both.
Oh, we're going both.
I'm going
Both.
Alonzo.
Hmm.
Yeah, Shabby.
Shavvy's the man.
Yeah,
he looks the part.
I think it's between,
I think it's between Alonzo
and Hurtzler.
Yeah, yeah.
I think Hurtz is quite a good looking man
and obviously,
Brian.
What about Yisler at Newcastle?
Oh,
he's a good,
yeah,
he looks the part,
don't he?
His hair's never out of place,
is it?
Yeah, his hair's never out of price.
And his suits are quite tailored,
really good,
and the shirts are always...
Tight, tight, tight.
Yeah, you guys,
they're very tight,
though, Clinton.
I think them three is a good chart.
Yeah, I think size up.
Size up one.
Size up.
Yeah, but he likes to show off his muscles, though.
You got to understand.
That's what he's about, isn't he?
Yeah.
The hair is a little bit,
that's slightly of the night, isn't it?
Do you know what I mean?
If he sort of emerged from a coffin,
you wouldn't be that surprised.
If he disappeared after a heavy home defeat as a bat,
you wouldn't be surprised.
That's what I'm saying.
No.
just left his press conference as a bat
after a 3-0 home defeat to Sunderland.
Oh, I knew it.
Well, I mean, unfortunately,
that is all we've got time for.
It's a good way to finish.
Manager flying off as a bat.
Big thanks to
these two legends for being
largely good company on the Sunday evening.
I think I've got one final question
for each of you. Clinton,
are you still scared of lifts?
I'll always be scared of lift to the day
I'm buried underground me
I'm never going in the lift
You should see me
You stay strong on that
And Luke this is more of a journalistic one for you
Isisak still staying at Newcastle
He's staying in the treatment room
That's where he's staying
Oh brilliant
Thanks very much fellas
