The commentators view on the Football Daily
with Alistair Bruce Ball, John Murray and Ian Dennis,
Hello and welcome to the commentator's view Extra
as we five live commentators delve deeper into this weekend's games.
Ali Bruce Ball and correspondent John Murray are with us.
Where should we start for this bonus edition?
A trial version.
Trial version is something slightly different for this week.
We'll see where it takes us in.
Where do you want to start?
Well, I think we should start for what will be the base for our 3 o'clock commentary.
Chelsea against Sunderland, Ali and Steve Sidwell,
the commentary on the usual goal service.
We've got Newcastle-Fullum as an alternative at 3 o'clock on Sports Extra,
and then after Sports Report,
John is with Paul Robinson at Old Trafford for Manchester United
against Brighton and Hove Albion.
But, Ali, you saw Chelsea in midweek in the Champions League.
They made a number of changes,
so they'll be coming into this game really fresh.
They will be coming into the game really fresh,
and I'm actually going to be really interested to see what he does
with the starting 11
because I think Estevan now
I think he started three
of the eight Premier League games
but the way he played again
on Wednesday night
made me think he cannot be far away
from starting the Premier League games regularly
ahead of Metro Netto?
Well that's the thing John
that is the thing because he plays on the right-hand side
doesn't need to cut in on that left foot
and Netto has started every single game this season
and Gittins actually
I was impressed with Gittins on Wednesday night
as well he was starting wide on the left-hand side.
The other thing that I think is quite interesting is Giu scored on Wednesday night
and came off at half-time.
And I was thinking, why has he come off so soon?
This is a good chance for him to get a run.
And he's quite an interesting story as well
because obviously went off on loan to Sunderland.
Dilap got injured.
He's come back to Chelsea and got a chance again.
And a lot of people will say, won't they,
that Jual Pedro would actually prefer to play
in the number 10 role rather than the centre forward.
And actually, if you look at his sort of goal
and assist output recently playing as the
centre forward. It's not been that great. And I just wonder
whether taking Giu off at half time on Wednesday
potentially means we see
Giu starting as centre forward in the Premier League
and Juel Pedro playing off him, which could be
an option. Rees James got a rest.
And you know, that's another thing, John, Ian, that strikes
me about Chelsea this season. The likes of
Reese James has now played four
Premier League games in a row from start
to finish. You know, someone who's had terrible injury
problems in his career. For Farnas, another one, got
through the whole game on Wednesday night.
He's had a terrible time with injuries at Chelsea.
I just wonder whether they're getting that.
It looks at the moment, touch wood, for those players,
that they're sort of getting that right as well.
But he's got lots of interesting decisions to make,
plus the fact that Dilap, I think, is on his way back quite soon as well.
Not only that, the fact that it is actually a very decent-looking match,
this, isn't it, against Sunderland,
the way that they've started this season.
And, you know, the way that they've played,
the fact that they've got a bit of something going there,
And most importantly, the results that they've had makes this quite an interesting one.
I've not, you've commented on Sunday live, haven't you, Ian?
So I've not done them live yet.
And you have John Brown.
So I'm actually quite looking forward to seeing them live because I've seen them in bits and pieces and on television so far.
They seem to have done that really clever thing because it doesn't always work of blending,
signing a lot of players this summer and strengthening, but sort of not losing the team spirit and the effectiveness.
from last season and keeping an amount of those players that have brought them up with them as well.
Yeah, they've recruited really, really well.
I mean, Granite Jacques has key for them with his experience in the midfield.
Nordimukiel has, I think, has been a really, really good addition in defense for them.
Did I read that Alderetti is out with a head injury because of concussion protocols?
That's a blow, isn't it?
Yeah.
Yeah, because since he's come in, he's actually, he's started the last six.
games for them in the heart of their defense.
But they're in a great position, aren't they, in the sense that they've got a good number
of points on the board already.
So when you hit your blip, because you're not going to, as a newly promoted team,
you're not going to go through the whole season.
Well, you might do, you know, keeping it kind of on this level.
But once you've got points in the bag, it just allows you, if the blip comes, say,
in the next month or so, to just not panic because you've got points on the board and then
you can sort of, you know, go again, can't you?
Yeah, great. But it is a remarkable thing that they've been able to do,
Regis Labris has been able to do, is to meld that all together in such a short period of time.
And Siddiqui is another one. When I saw them, I was really impressed by him,
just his all-action game that he has in the midfield. So, yeah, lots of positives about them,
but, you know, it's a test. But I know I'm going to be commentating on them in a couple of weeks' time as well
when they're at home to Arsenal.
So, you know, some proper tests coming up for them.
Well, that's the commentary then on Five Live.
Newcastle Fulham is on Sports Extra.
And then at Old Trafford, John,
Manchester United against Bryant and Hobalbion
is the 530 commentary after Sports Report.
And Manchester United,
who you saw get their first winner at Anfield
for, what, since 2016 last week?
Nearly a decade, yeah.
Yeah.
But as I was saying last week on the commentator's view,
you know, there is a bit of a commentator.
consistency of selection for Manchester United now, and it does feel that they've got a little bit of
something going. Now, after that resulted at Anfield, I think maybe a little wild back, you would have
said, yeah, but let's see what happens now when they play Brighton. But I think the fact that they
have now won two matches in a row finally in the Premier League means that it just feels that
things are now properly moving in the right direction for them.
And as I was saying during the commentary last weekend,
they've now had another week, clear week, because they're not in Europe.
So before this match against Brighton on the Saturday,
then they don't play again until the following Saturday
because they've been knocked out of the League Cup.
So that's another clear week.
That is a lot of time on the training field.
And I think that is part of the reason that they are,
bearing fruit.
Here's a curveball question for the pair of you.
Do you think Mason Mount can get himself back into England contention?
I think it's not impossible, certainly, and a large part of that is the fact that he is a Thomas
Tuchel favourite and won the Champions League with Thomas Tuchel.
And, you know, we know that Reach James is probably, I would say, that the first choice
currently for England is right back.
and he was a Thomas Tuchel favourite
and won the Champions League with Tuchel
but obviously
from Mason Mount that is a very competitive
area for
a place in the England team
but I certainly if he's able to
to carry on from where he's got
back to now I think he'd certainly be
a contender Ian for a place in the squad
yeah I was just looking actually he's only started
the last two games before that
he came off the bench in the couple of games
that preceded that I think he might
have left it too late Ali
I just think that next week
Thomas Tuchel announces his squad
for the final two qualifiers
against Serbia at home
and Albania away
I can't see him being in that squad
I agree with John
I think there are players who are ahead of him
and I think then you've only got
the games in March
and he'd need to go on a really
really good run of form
between November and March
I think to try and gate crash his way into that squad
I think it's two weeks isn't it before he names his squad
you're right it is two weeks
And interesting on that note that Jude Bellingham scored Rail Madrid's winner against Juventus.
And is now just easing his way into the starting lineup for Rail Madrid.
Yeah, yeah.
Here's another one for you.
Did you hear Danny Welbeck?
So talking Manchester United Brighton, he was on the Monday nightclub this week.
It was brilliant guest.
And a couple of things that stood out to me.
One was the importance of sleep.
Did you hear the conversation about the importance of a good night's sleep and being well-rested?
to be able to, you know, to do your best thing?
Well, I'm, I'm, you know, you're pushing an open door there for me.
I keep talking to you about afternoon naps.
Yeah.
Yeah.
But the other thing.
And actually, funnily enough, my daughter was on to me this week.
And she was, and during the course of the conversation, she said that she'd just been
having an afternoon nap, which I was quite surprised by it.
So, like, father-like daughter.
I'll tell you who didn't mention their afternoon nap on the Monday night club.
I actually phoned Chris Sutton on.
Monday afternoon. And you know when someone picks up the phone, you can tell they've been
asleep? And I went, oh, I'm sorry, I've woken you up, haven't I? So Chris had obviously
had an afternoon now, but didn't mention it on the Monday nightclub. But the other thing
that was the dead giveaway, you know when people, by not saying something, you know exactly what
they mean. And they were asking Danny Welbeck about Fabian Hertzler and whether Welbeck now at
this stage in his career is able to say, look, I know what's best for me. And maybe too many
sessions for me, not going to be enough or whatever. And he sort of knocked it away slightly
joshingly, but you could tell that Herzler
works them very, very
hard and doesn't take no for an answer
and, you know, really sort of foot to the
floor all the time.
Preposterous to say that he
might have a chance of being in the
England squad? Well, I was
just thinking that. He's 35
next month. I think
he could be a wild card.
I could see well back.
I mean, what, has he scored? He scored
four goals, four
in his last three games.
And I could see that.
Not only that, I could see his character is something that would play well for him with Thomas Tuchel.
We know that.
We know that very well, don't we?
That character attitude is very important for Thomas Tuchel.
We were once on a flight to, on a family holiday, out to Florida, and we were flying via Atlanta.
And my son said to me, Danny Welbeck's at the back of the plane.
And I went, he won't be.
I said, Danny will be at the front.
If Danny Welbeck's on this plane, he won't be at the back, son.
Anyway, true enough, Danny Welbeck is at the back of the plane.
So we went to the baggage carousel because we'd missed our connection.
We had to get the bags off.
And true enough, all of a sudden, just wanders over.
What are you doing here?
I said, oh, I said, I'm on a family holiday.
Nice to see you.
He is such a lovely, lovely lad.
Yeah.
And I agree, John.
I think he's got the personality, the character.
the professionalism, the drive, every quality that Thomas Tuchel looks in a player,
Danny Welbeck has it in abundance.
And a track record of scoring goals for England.
His England goal scoring record is decent, isn't it?
Yes.
It's good.
It's good.
On Monday, A, he came across as exactly, as you say, just the loveliest chap.
And also the other point that Mark made to him is he'll get a fantastic reception at Old Trafford, won't he?
He's one of those players who, you know,
if things had been different, he wouldn't have left.
It wouldn't have left, but left in such a way
that there's absolutely no bad feeling at all
about having gone away and left Manchester.
Because as you say, John, he probably would have liked
to have spent his entire career there,
but they were welcoming back with open arms,
which is great.

This weekend, of course, Sean Dyche's first Premier League game as Nottingham Forest manager
after becoming their third boss in six weeks.
Got that win against Porto on Thursday night in the Europa League.
But the bread and butter, as we may say, is where he'll be judged, of course, in the top flight.
What do you make of the whole scenario last week about Poster Coglu going after 39 days?
I was on my way to Fulham.
Yeah, and heard the news and was.
wasn't hugely surprised.
It was heading that way, wasn't it?
I think the surprise was Ian,
and I mean, you were on air at the time, I think, weren't you?
Yes, I was, yeah.
The announcement came.
Was it 18 or 19 minutes after the end of the match?
21, I think, John.
21?
21, yeah.
Just over 20, I think it was, yeah.
It's amazing what has gone on at Nottingham Forest
since qualifying for Europe at the end of last season.
And also, you know, if, do you think when Nuno Espirito Santo left, when the initial shortlist was drawn up for the next man in who became Ange Poster Coglu, do you think Sean Dyshe was on that shortlist?
Or do you think Sean Dyshe is a reaction to what went on under Ange Poster Coglu, as in this didn't work?
Do you think he was initially in the running?
If I remember rightly, Ian, his name was mooted as a possibility before Poster Coglux.
clue. When it looked as though things were heading, you know, when Nuno Espirito Santo,
actually, because it came from him, didn't it, initially, when he sat on the press conference
and announced to the world that things weren't going terribly well between him and the
and the Nottingham Forest hierarchy. I think from that point on, I think Sean Deich's name was
mentioned. And has the connection with the club, doesn't he, as well, as well as being a very
good football manager and probably exactly what Nottingham Forest need right now. I mean,
just, I didn't see the game against Porto on Thursday night, but just reading up on it and looking
at the team line up and the way they played, that struck me as exactly what you'd expect Sean
Dyes to do and sort of very Nuno-esque in terms of the way Nottingham Forrest went about that.
Yeah, there was a great line from Morgan Gibbs White, who was interviewed on the pitch after the
match on television, and he said, we can breathe now, which felt, you know, having finally got
the win again. But yeah, just a few, too. And I thought,
You know, they went with two penalties and just got a little bit of something going, I think.
I don't know about you two, but when the statement came out after Sean's appointment and there was a line in it, it just says that he's got qualities that align closely with the current squad's attributes and the club's footballing identity.
I thought they'd gone away from that.
I think this appointment matches the identity of Nuno Espirito Santo that served them so well in pushing.
for the Champions League last season.
The appointment of Ange Poster Coglu, I thought, was a bit of a sea change.
And that jarred at me.
I thought we've gone through a thorough process to identify the new manager.
Well, you appointed him very, very quickly.
That statement actually comes about as close as you could possibly get to an admission
that they strayed away from that.
Yeah.
What was actually quite good in his press conference,
the other day is that
one of the questions was about
the way he called the goal in the FA
Cup final when he was with Five Live
and he really did enjoy it. He said
I got a lot of love for that. So
I was quickly on to the Five Live
social team and I said, you need to
clip that one up because
yeah. And did we? And we did, yeah.
Excellent. Yeah. And when we did,
I actually sent it to him and he replied
with a laughing emoji.
Well, good.
I mean, on the weekends football, I mean, to start with a win is fantastic.
Against Porto, who are unbeaten, you know, domestically, aren't they?
So that's a very good win.
Bournemouth away is one of the most difficult games you can have in the Premier League at the moment.
And I think it's also quite interesting.
I was just looking again at that team on Thursday for Nottingham Forest.
You know, players that were signed for relatively big money this summer, like James McAtee and Amari Hutchinson,
you know what what it's going to mean for them because as you're talking about
Ian sort of Nottingham Forest you know trying to change things a bit the way they approach
things signing certain players but now Sean Deich is in what you know what what it will
mean for them that is the classic gamble though of a footballer isn't it to make a move
at a time when there is a bit of a term well not that you necessarily know it but you know
that's good look and bad look isn't it potentially in terms of what it means for you
and your career but yeah I think
that really is one of the games
that stand out this weekend
and it's a bit of a bumper weekend, isn't it?
It's one of those Sundays
after a European midweek
when our commentaries
can be heard in all sorts of different places
so that Bournemouth Nottingham Forest match
you can listen to that
via the BBC Sport website and app
and Sohail Sahi and Danny Gabbadon
will be bringing you the commentary
And at 2 o'clock on Sports Extra
Aston Villa Manchester City is with Chris Coles and Clinton Morrison.
Erling Harland, 15 goals for Manchester City.
He's only failed to score in one game this season for City.
And that was Tottenham back in August when they were beaten 2-0.
And do you know the really nerdy thing about Erling Harland?
So ever since he arrived, a clock that he'd scored,
I think it was something like 47 of his 62 goals in the Bundesliga
were off his left foot.
So when he arrived, I thought, I'm going to just keep a tally of every goal that he scored off his left foot.
And in midweek, I asked John Acres when he said, oh, he scored again.
I said, oh, I said, how did he score it?
So it was off his right foot.
The reason I asked that, I've calculated, he's on 98 goals off his left foot alone for Manchester City.
So he's on the verge of a century of goals just off his left boot.
Incredible, isn't it?
it is and i think that was quite a tough choice for us on on sunday which match to put on five
live and which one between arsenal crystal palace and ashton vla manchester city and actually
it's the arsenal crystal palace match that is on on five live at two o'clock on sunday with
john acres and jobby mackenough actually as the as the summarizer i mean Manchester city just
looking at their record seven wins and two draws in the last nine games so unbeaten in the
last night. I know given recent seasons, that doesn't really surprise us because they go on these
long runs, but that sort of happened slightly sneak. We've been focusing on Arsenal problems at
Liverpool and Manchester City is just sort of clicking back into gear. I think Donna Ruma has added
a bit of, you know, at the other end of the field has added a bit of solidity back there, hasn't he?
Those early season defeats, one was at home against Tottenham, wasn't it? They got caught playing
out in that game. James Trafford, do you remember his pass into the, put them into a spot of
bother, but that seems to have made a bit of a difference. They won't want, they weren't on a
Roderie, is Roderie fit?
He's not made the last two games, has he?
They won't want him out for too long again, obviously,
because of what that meant for them last season.
But you're right, John, I think in terms of they're good games there, aren't they?
Two, well, loads of good games on Sunday afternoon.
I mean, Arsenal Palace looks after Palace Bournemouth last week.
Although, you know, Palace, what about them trying to cope with the old playing on Thursday night
and then going into a game against Arsenal Sunday 2 o'clock?
One of the points I'd like to make as well.
weekend, Liverpool played 8 o'clock on a Saturday night against Brentford, and their next
league match is also 8 o'clock on a Saturday night. And I'm not sure, is that, should that
be happening that you play two successive matches on Saturday at 8 o'clock? And I know that part of
the reason for that is the packed schedule, European commitments, etc., etc. I just feel like that
slot, is that a natural slot for Premier League matches to be played in? I don't know that over the
years we've come used to to Premier League matches being played in all sorts of kickoff times,
etc, et cetera, et cetera.
But I don't know about you.
I feel that that is a time on a Saturday evening, which is not a traditional time for English
football matches to be played.
And I almost feel like that's, that is actually one, one rare point in the week where
there is the potential for a bit of family time.
You know, and people aren't pulled in all sorts of different directions.
And then suddenly, the Premier League ends up with matches being played at that time.
But it's gone under the radar, hasn't it?
Yeah, it has.
It's gone under the radar.
And before you know it, it'll be established now as a new fixture slot for seasons going forward.
And again, I just think, what about the travelling supporter?
Absolutely.
Middlesbrough fans last week put up a banner because, you know,
which fans had had to travel something like
510 miles on a Friday night
to get to the Riverside. And the Middlesbrough
supporters highlighted that.
And before we know it, the game's
going to finish close to 10 o'clock.
How does the travelling fan
get home on public transport?
The Liverpool fans from Brentford on a
Saturday night. Yeah. It'll
be established before we know it
and it'll just be a matter of course going forward
because it's just gone in under the radar.
I agree with you. I don't think it's
good going forward. There's something that
doesn't
sit right
with me about it
and actually
I think
the development
this week
as well
about the
calling off
of the
the Liga
match being
played overseas
I think
that I think
again
that was a real
result
wasn't it
for fan
reaction and
fan power
and actually
the clubs
bought into it
as well
with the
delaying
the kickoff
by 15 seconds
that was
very very
effective
wasn't it
yes it was
yeah
just to take
Brentford
Liverpool
back to the football
Alexander Isak came off
didn't he at half time
in the Champions League
and as we've recorded this
I've not heard from Arna Slot
yet on how bad that injury is
if he's unavailable
does that help Arna Slot
in a funny sort of way
because he can get his informed striker
Eckertike playing through the middle
Salah can come back in
without a fuss and Gakbow can stay on the left-hand side
yeah and I thought Eckertike
looked terrific when he came on as a substitute
against Manchester United at Anfield last
weekend, you know, that was quite a case that he made to be in the starting lineup. I mean,
the chances Liverpool had in that match against Manchester United. If they'd converted half
of them, then surely they would have won that match, although in saying, of course, Manchester
United did have chances at the other end. It was actually a very good match that for a Liverpool
Manchester United match in recent times. And actually just going back to Manchester United,
I thought one of the big things for Manchester United in that match,
was that too often, in the eyes of Manchester United fans, when they've played the teams
that they would like to be their equals, they have been outclassed and they've looked
a hundred miles short of being anywhere near that level, whereas on Sunday it actually
looked a little bit more like they were beginning to move towards where they want to be.
Well, that was last weekend. This weekend, we have eight of the ten games covered for you
across the five-live network, whether it be on five-line.
Eight out of ten.
Not quite five out of six for Clash of the Commentators,
