Listen.
sound. Hello, welcome to the debrief on the Football Daily. There were eight Premier League
games on Wednesday, 26 goals in total, seven of them at St James's Park, where Newcastle won
it in the 102nd minute against Leeds. Manchester United were held at Verneley and Darren
Fletcher's first game as interim manager. Manchester City won Brighton, one, Fulham two, Chelsea
won, Chelsea reduced to 10 quite early in the first half when Marco Cuccareo was sent
off for a professional foul on Harry Wilson. Palace and
Villa ended goalless. Two for Ego
Tiago as Brentford beat Sunderland by
three goals to nil. Everton
were reduced to nine in the second
half. Michael Keene and Jack
Grealish sent off and it finished one
all for them at home to Wolves.
And Bournemouth, thanks to an Antoine
Sermeno injury time winner
beat Spurs by
three goals to two. We'll hear from
Peter Schmichael, Shee Given and Rachel
Corsy plus Michael Brown with Chris
Coles at Turf Moore. And plenty
more as we go through the stories of the
night there are so many stories
probably not Palace and Villa
but everywhere else there are
stories. Yeah you're right I mean in some ways
you could make an argument for the Palace
Villa one because the six games before tonight
Villa have conceded 19 goals against Palace
for a team that is very good defensively
it has been their sort of nemesis
you could see Emery was frustrated obviously
he wants to three points because we're in the league the expectation
and so on but that's not the worst result for Villa
because that's been a difficult matchup for them
The one I would say for me is the Bournemouth victory with Semenio getting the winner.
And in the most extraordinary, magical manner, Antoine Semenio,
who looks like he'll be departing the club this week for Manchester City
in what is probably his final game, has scored the winning goal,
deep into stoppage time for Bournemouth to take three points and beat Tottenham Hotspur.
He is a model example of how to conduct yourself when you play for a side that you're proud to
to play for you've worked hard to come through
you've contributed to the success of last season
you're in a position in the league table you've had a bad
run of games it's it's been
difficult you've still done everything you've contributed
you've had good character that all
the narrative around it is is how he's conducted
himself as being top level
professional and I think that is something
that's worth highlighting because so often
we see the opposite where players you know it
they want the move and they dig their heels
in and that's a great example of
how to do it hasn't everybody
connected with that
move from Bournemouth side of things conducted themselves absolutely brilliantly from the
release clause and whatever the different terms of that are therefore the promise of if
it's met and then we will allow you to go but done in the right way at the right time and with
a player who throughout that time that everybody has known that he will move on has been has
been celebrated by the
Bournemouth fans. Not
hammered, not criticised, not
nothing, but
just celebrated
and then wished well
on his way. I mean, every aspect
of it feels like they've
done it with such the right way
and with such class. They have done
and a lot of people have contributed to that
because there will be some fans and also even
the fans that have, you know, but applauded him tonight
and applauded him in other moments too will be
disappointed because as a football fan
You're sad when your top players move on
because you see your club as a pinnacle,
but they understand that.
Michael, we're talking about Antoine Semenio.
If and when he goes to City,
how do you think he's going to be used
and will he be given his freedom?
I think the answer to that question is no.
He won't be straight away.
I think he has to earn it with Pep Guardiola.
We've seen with Ryan Cherokee.
The first few weeks he'd come in,
he felt, oh, he looks good.
then he's had to go back,
realize when he can do it,
where he needs to be on the pitch.
For however much you want to contribute,
there's not many who can go straight in,
grab it and stay in.
You've got to learn the pep cardio all the way,
whether you like it or not.
But he's got a lot of competition.
It'll be different for him.
But as the guys have just said,
and you were mentioning to come through it like he has
and to play on those games,
knowing that moves on,
he's done very, very well.
And it could have been a lot worse,
going to be.
And that ending, I mean, you earn everything there,
don't you when you managed to do that.
but, you know, it looks like it's going to happen, let's be honest.
It would have been shut down you would think that it wasn't going to.
So, wish him well.
He's got a competition, but he's certainly in the right frame now to go and develop under PEP.
Just look at City in the last, obviously, three games.
They've dropped six points.
Why not to do it on day one?
Why not do it at the start of the window?
Get him in, freshen the things up.
And again, he's shown tonight what a player he is.
And, you know, even City tonight's struggling.
He's just break defence time.
What I mean? Even off the benches, Brownie says you might not start.
But I don't understand why not do it as soon as that window opens on the 1st of January.
is the city are challenging at the very top of the league.
Get it done straight away.
If he's agreed, he's to personal terms or stuff,
just get it over the line.
Get him through the door and get him on the pitch.
Having said all of that, though, Shea,
in an attacking sense,
Manchester City should have had enough the past couple of games,
shouldn't they?
He should have had, but maybe defensively,
they haven't been great, but again,
Bernardo Silva on that right-hand side is getting on a bit.
You would imagine Simenia will come in that position.
And again, I think it's going to be a brilliant sign.
I think he's only 25 years of age.
He's in the prime of his life.
and again, it was a fantastic
you should talk about
fairy tales
it was a phenomenal way
to sign off
at Bournemouth tonight
it really was
he's been so good
for them
and for the fans
to give him that
sort of send-off
at the end
he deserved it
of course
for what he's done
for the club
but they score
that brilliant strike
as well
fantastic.
Let's hear from
And Doni Irola
I think he's a massive
massive player
I think he's
one of the best
players I've ever coach
honestly
also in the personal
side I think
is a big loss
for us
because he's
a person full of energy
even when the
team is in a low mood.
He's one of the first one, who comes to train happy.
He is the first one with energy the next day.
And I love this kind of players.
And I'm sure he will be very good also in the future.
What could he do, do you think, with Manchester City?
Because it is a step up for him.
A step up he absolutely deserves.
Yes.
But Antoine is a player that has been stepping up every single season.
even before coming to Burmoth
he's going through the divisions
improving with us
the three years I've been here
has been improving
every single season
I would say even every single month
and even this season
half a season
and scoring 10 goals
from the wing
I think he's a top level player
and I wish him all the best obviously
Manchester City were held to a one-all draw
by Brighton
Arsle could therefore go eight points
clear if they beat Liverpool on 3rd
Thursday.
Three draws in a row, some booze from the home supporters here as the final whistle went
because they know these, once again, are two big points dropped.
For City, there's been talking of signing Mark Geh in this window.
Given their central defensive problems, would you pay the money for him?
Yeah, I would pay the money for him.
He's a brilliant centre half.
There's no doubt about that.
Liverpool wanted him.
I didn't get him.
And, you know, there is a crisis.
Not a crisis.
I suppose that's too big a word, but there's a lot of injuries at Man City at the minute.
I believe John Stone's not even be out of contract in the summer.
So someone of his quality, you know, his experience,
leadership, you know, all the things you want in the centre half is, for me,
it'd be a no-brainer.
But I think all the top clubs are looking at Marquis.
Barry Munich might have been linked with them as well, perhaps.
Of course, Liverpool will still be interested.
But if Man City can get the deal done, Hugo Viana,
at Man City, now can he get the deal over the line?
I think he'd be very tempting to get him in.
Rachel, would you go and sign Mark Gay now if you were City?
Yeah, and I imagine though they will do that.
the situation they're in
I think the start of the season
they obviously recruited
it hasn't really been that convincing
they've tried to adapt and play a little
in a way that leaves them a little more exposed
so naturally they have conceded a couple more goals
as a result of that
but they've got to go and get someone
that can be commanding
and I think it almost just compounds
the fact that Liverpool didn't then get the deal done
if he does then go to city
just on our monitors at the moment
we've got one monitor split into four screens
and on one side of that there are two
boxers. And Keith Andrews is in one of them and Thomas Frank is below him and the contrast
in how they are looking. I mean, Keith Andrews looks like as fresh-faced and as happy as he
possibly could be. And Thomas Frank Rachel looked absolutely shattered, doesn't he?
Yeah, it looks like the weather's been better in Brentford just across a few streets down.
I mean the contrast is what this job does to people. The contrast is huge. Yeah. And
when you think as well when they took over to jobs, almost everyone,
was, especially by the players they lost.
It wasn't just because Keith Andrews took charge,
but there was some scepticism.
They lost Thomas Frank.
They lost a number of key players.
A lot of people thought Brentford potentially
would be a team down in their relegation zone.
So for him it was almost,
sometimes it's easier to take on a role
whereby there's less pressure to start
when you back yourself
and in fairness he did back himself
and he's proven it.
For Thomas Frank, you go to Spurs,
there's enormous expectation.
And in some ways,
based on when they finished last season in Premier League,
based in the last few years, volatile results,
unpredictable, that's a difficult job
and unfortunately for Thomas Frank
it's not been the start
he would have wanted it to be.
I like Thomas Frank.
I think he's a really good manager,
a really good coach and I've said on here before
maybe last season, you know, when the big jobs come up
he's never linked with him.
Now he's in that position, he's at a big job,
he's at a big club, but again, you're right, Mark,
he looks shattered as you say,
you know, bags under his eyes, he looks stressed.
That's what management does to these guys
and, you know, they can't go home tonight
and put his head on the pillow
and have a good eight hours of sleep.
He'll be stressing and tossing and turning all night
for the next training session, the next game.
But again, go back to Tottenham last season.
They were terrible in the Premier League.
I don't know, it was 16, 17.
They finished if they were horrendous.
Obviously, they got the Europa League final.
They won that.
Wasn't a great game.
They just managed to get probably a lucky goal
against Manion Netted and that as well.
So I don't know.
I don't know.
Where does Tottenham go from here?
What do they do?
The last six, they've won one,
lost three and drawn two.
And that includes, you know, getting walloped at Nottingham Forest, you know,
drawing at Brentford being held at home by Sunderland.
I know Sunderland had been doing well and Brentford are in fifth, as we've been saying,
but the expectation is you get more than what they got out of them
on top of this constant discussion about how much of an attacking threat they have.
Yeah, I don't think at either end, they're showing the levels that we know some of those players are capable of.
Even tonight, you know, you've got someone like Romero
who we've seen many times, the passion he shows,
he's a charismatic character,
Semenio gets the ball to the edge of the box,
what's he likely to do?
He's going to shoot because he's a forward
and he's very much on form and he's a good player.
And there's not enough intensity to identify the danger.
Those are simple things that
when you've seen Thomas Frank's teams play elsewhere,
you know he demands a certain standard
how they press the ball, how they get up against it.
So when you see little things like that,
it's hard to understand.
sort of where those little habits come from.
It's not just, remember, that was just an individual example
that I saw tonight, but all these little habits
for some reason seem to be
a consistent thing that lingers around
Spurs.
Brentford, they've beaten some of them by three goals
to nil. Two goals for Eager
Tiago. We can hear from
Keith Andrews. We're in good form.
We're playing pretty well.
In fact, we're playing really well.
We're playing with a lot of personality and courage
and conviction and everything we do with
and we're out the ball.
Yeah, we deserve to win tonight.
And you've got this man mounting up front
who's in terrific goalscoring form
and you never hear a bad word from anyone about him.
He seems to be a really good character.
Yeah, exactly that.
I think the recruitment team
deserve a lot of praise
for the type of players they bring in
and personalities.
The Jewish diligence that we do on that front
I think is really impressive.
A really special person
that has settled into life at Brentford
very, very nicely.
Because he's had a hard life.
You know, he had to do jobs
outside just to pay for his football boots and stuff like that.
Does that come across in him that he knows what football's given him?
Yeah, for sure.
I think he's had to earn this path.
We speak about it all the time and earning the right to play.
And he's earned his journey.
He's grafted.
He's got serious grit about his personality and that's something I like in a player.
Newcastle have now won three on the spin, Shea.
There's so much about this season that at times has felt flat
or questions about what?
what's really going on
and where they're saving their best performances
for Carabow Cup or Champions League
or whatever it may be.
Three on the spin
and they are sixth
going into the start of the FA Cup
and they've got a Carabat Cup
semi-finals to come.
Yeah, it's incredible
and again, I don't know if they'll go again
in January to bring any more players
to the football club but Eddie said at the start
of the month it's a big month coming up
and I think he meant as much on the pitch
as off the pitch so
yeah, it's I mean when you score a goal
I got in the last, you know, you see the place is absolutely rocking
and on a night as well, I'd like to mention
the news broke about Kevin Keegan, you know,
one of the brilliant best managers, Newcastle ever had the entertainers
until won a game four free on the evening.
That's been announced as just, it makes it even more special,
I think, for these fans.
They were singing his name tonight as well,
and I'm sure Kevin's, you know, wherever he's in hospital tonight,
you know, watching that or at least hopefully giving him
some sort of a smile on his face and we're all thinking about him
and we wish him well.
Yeah, it was announced early this evening,
Kevin Keegan and his family announced
that he's been treated for cancer at the moment
so that was announced earlier
that as far as the atmosphere at St James's Park
as well Rachel
that's the kind of thing that could kickstart the rest of
I know we always talk about atmosphere there
but they've had so many sort of ups and downs
and flat moments and only one three on the spin
it's the kind of thing that could be a launch pad that
do you know what I feel there's been a little bit of a narrative
that Newcastle are a bit of a question mark this season
I think it's been a little harsh
because there's been a few little runs
where they've maybe not got the results
that perhaps the performance is warranted
but actually think performance-wise
they've been pretty good
I think it has been consistent
I think the results at times
have just been a little unfortunate
and the league is tight
a couple of good results and they're back in a position
where you expect them to be
and they've done well I think Eddie Howe
and his coaching staff to just keep the players
close enough in check to just be focused
and go and let's just keep going game at a time
and chip away and they're in all the competitions
they're in a good spot.
According to Opta, that's the latest winner
ever scored in a Premier League match.
Burnley 2, Manchester United 2.
Where do you think Burnley go from here, Michael?
It's the one, isn't it?
Can they strengthen? Can they bring some reinforcements in?
Because for all the effort, the desire,
the tactical knowledge that Scott Park is trying to drill in
with patient build-up and creativity towards the top of the pitch,
you still feel that they're really, really light in that squad.
They need some reinforcements.
They've lost the captain for a long period of time,
so a midfield, a certain real strong, experienced midfielder would be key
to try and keep the season alive a little bit.
But that gap's getting too strong for them.
Now, they will run out of steam if they don't get points very, very quickly.
It's just human nature.
So they've had to go this season,
but now that gap has started to look really concerning.
and over the next period of time,
I think it will get worse
if they can't get a few players in now in January.
And from your point of view, for United,
was that in the main tonight
very similar to lots of games this season?
A bit of good stuff,
a bit of bang average stuff
and a bit of not great stuff?
Yeah, I mean, there was some real good quality.
We know, yeah, it is.
And you know what, when you see Casamiro with space,
he looks great, doesn't he?
Fernandez is always there to deliver whether it be shots on target with a lovely
passes so it's sort of splitting defenses up defensively still a worry isn't it conceding the
goals trying to get some sort of stability whether it be four or five at the back it doesn't
really matter they've got to find a continuity to try and be better as a unit and it's not
just the back line I think it starts regards to high intensity runs recovery runs from
the front all around from wide areas and you know they're hurting at the moment the
is huge at Manchester United
for obvious reasons and
they've got some good players
but really the balance isn't right
and they're going to have to try and look at that
and whether that's become of the manager change
that board of directors certainly
understand what they need
but whether they can deliver now
and then obviously the talking point
of managerial situations
we can go on and on can't we
but it shows something different
I think overall I think Darren Fletcher
will be pleased with certain things he's seen
but when you come to Burnley
in the situation
in the room and you're Manchester United
you cannot afford not to take the three points
Do you think they ever look better
at having made substitutions
Rachel? It feels like a common theme that
Yeah I'm not look better tonight with the substitutions
Lacey and that coming on no
You mean Manionette? Yeah you thought they looked better after the change
I'm not sure
I don't think consistently you can say so
No no I just meant tonight yeah
Lacey looked bright
For me no
Burley are a team
Even I think probably Bernie's being generous
which is the right thing to try and be positive
because it's very easy to just focus on the negatives
but you're playing a team that hasn't won
in 11 games. Yes, you're away from home but
Burnley have struggled to pick up points against
almost every team this season and you
just feel that's a real disappointment
from a Manchester United team that when you see the start
in 11, I know she's asked me about the subs
but the start in 11 should have dominated that game from the start
the first goal is
in my opinion a little bit untidy
I think there's you can deal with those
you can eliminate those situations more
you should not get yourself in that predicament
I think their squad is lacking in quality
and a few players missing
you notice the drop off
yeah we can be positive about young players coming through
but it's still a stretch for me
it's interesting to see what happens next now
like what do they do now
because we're in January top of the transfer window being open
I don't think the squad's strong enough either
I think they need to bring more players in
do they bring players in now under
caretaker manager is the director of football
would you want to go there Shay
I don't know
I still think I still think it's got a big toll
It's Manchester and I, one of the biggest clubs in the world.
You know a lot of players still think that around the world, Michael.
And I also look at the league table.
And there's an opportunity.
If you can put any sort of string of results together at all,
three or four victories, I don't know, six games from you.
You're right in the mix for Champions League football again,
and then you go and recruit again in the summer.
If you don't recruit now in January,
then you maybe fall back again.
And it's another season, 18 months before you can compete again.
This season seems wide open for any team to finish Champions League.
I just don't know where they go, Brownie, in a sense,
where they go now.
But wouldn't you want to speak to the manager,
would you not want to speak to a manager
who's going to coach you, who's going to take you
on the journey over the next couple of seasons,
or with a modern day player now, well, it is what it is,
I have to just crack on and do whatever I need.
I'm even just thinking the powers of being.
You know, they must be thinking we have these strength in the squad.
We have an opportunity to get back in Champions League football
and be a care ticket manager or Oligoon and Solstress
coming in perhaps to the end of the season or whatever it is.
I think they need these strength again to give themselves the chance.
I don't think they can just rest to the summer now
and hope for the manager that's going to come in.
That's the talk of the minute.
On a permanent basis, it doesn't come to the summer.
I think they need to strengthen now.
Isn't the other problem, really, Michael?
They've had a very favourable run of fixtures in the main
of United and they haven't taken advantage of it.
You know, losing at home to 10-man Everton,
drawing at home to West Ham,
drawing at home to Bournemah,
drawing at home to Wolves,
a point at Ellen Road,
now a point at Burnley,
two promoter sides,
albeit Leeds are playing very well at the moment.
They've had a very favourable
run and they haven't capitalised
and next in the league it's the Derby
and then away at Arsenal.
Well that's going to be the one that they've slipped
up on it because overall when you look at their
position and how close they are
off Liverpool off full position you sort of
go well alright that's not a bad return
but really as you said
with those fixtures they've got to make sure that
they're in that position and obviously it brings uncertainty
because we've had a manager change
just as we've come off as owners
and the long term future is with
this manager then we see a change because they don't
see eye to eye over these
maybe these pictures have actually caused this sort of a problem
haven't they? Do you know when you're playing teams that you should
necessarily blow away and they haven't and this
says can you change it? Or do you think Brownie
is because the manager
the manager just left obviously had targets and they said
we're not going to do it in January and there was
a fallout in that front perhaps? Yeah.
There has to be isn't it when he comes out and says I was
a manager if you remember he took a long time
to be appointed didn't he and he was getting his demands
in he didn't necessarily want to go there and he felt
like he needed to run it his way and things
have changed. Jason Wolcock says unfortunately it
doesn't work like that anymore.
We decide on the recruitment.
You might have got one or two wrong already.
We're going to have a continuity.
And whether they're looking to somebody else,
there's been lots of rumours towards the summer,
and they might think, well, we need these type of players,
not the ones you want.
You want to know what my evenings actually look like?
Homework questions.
Someone needs a permission slip signed.
The dog's begging for a walk.
Someone's yelling for a snack.
And somewhere in the middle of all that,
I'm supposed to figure out dinner.
That's why Hello Fresh has been a lifesaver. Fresh ingredients show up at my door, locally sourced when
possible, simple step-by-step recipes that actually make sense. And no matter how chaotic the rest of my night
gets, dinner is the one thing I don't have to stress about. I'm just cooking a delicious meal my family
will actually eat and it takes around 30 minutes. And honestly, the real value is knowing that even on the
messiest nights, dinner's handled. That's one less thing pulling at me. And that matters. Take some stress out

So a draw for Manchester United
in the first game for Darren Fletcher
who said pre-match that he called Sir Alex Ferguson
to ask for his permission to take the role.
Peter Schmichael joins us.
It's a bit of a difficult question to ask this, Peter,
and I don't really know the best way to phrase it,
but are you comfortable with the amount of influence
that Sir Alex Ferguson still appears to carry?
I don't think he's got any influence at all.
I mean, I get exactly what Darren is talking about.
I speak to him at least every month and I still ask him for advice about different things.
He has been one of the most important people in my life
and he has given me an opportunity to perform at the highest level
and achieve incredible things.
So I trust his judgment, not only on football but on different other things.
And I know Darren myself, we're not the only one.
We are a long list of players who speak to him like he is our second dad.
And if I was there, I would phone him up as well.
So he uses the word comfort there, just to give him comfort and confidence to go into this period,
even though it's just two games to begin with.
So I would have done the same thing.
I am absolutely convinced that Sir Alex Carrey has no influence in the running up the club at the moment.
I don't think he wants to have any influence either.
but it's not like Jim or Jason Wilcox or Omar or any of them
are phoning him up for advice.
I think they're doing what they think is right.
And then so we've grown up with somebody who is so special
and got so many things right for himself, for the football club and for us.
And of course we ask him for advice.
So when the club's interim managers that they are supposedly looking at
and the three are Fletcher, Carrick and Solshar.
Is there any point of you that think
that that does give the impression of the club
desperately trying to keep ties to the glory years?
I think that's the wrong question to ask.
So I think that's the sick.
They've cut nearly every ties to Manchester United.
You don't forget these guys who's running the club now,
you know, three of the four most important guys
are all recruited from Manchester City.
We are Manchester United
and there aren't that many Manchester United people
back at the club
to actually drive it in the direction
that Manchester United should be driven at.
Now, it pleases me that the three of them are mentioned.
I mean, it's a dream.
For me, it's a dream team
if they could get all three
to see out the rest of the season
because they are true man united people.
I've just listening to an interview
that Steve Bauer did with Darren Fletcher yesterday.
And the things he's saying, he is an absolutely true servant to the club.
He knows the club inside out.
He's won five Premier League titles with him.
He's got the DNA of Manchester United, you know, running through his blood.
And I think that is important.
That is important right now because we've been through a period with a coach who didn't want to play the way that Manchester United is supposed to play.
We've been through a period of quite a lot of managers.
And only one manager, by the way, since Alex Ferguson has had more than a hundred games.
which, you know, it's a staggering stat for me.
We've been through a period where it hasn't worked,
but big, strong name managers come in with their systems and their ideas,
and it hasn't worked.
And I like the idea that at least for the next four months,
there'll be a, you know, it'll be run.
The football, the actual football will be run by people
who has been there as players
and have good qualities of coaches
and know what Manchester United is supposed to be.
Do you have a name that you would want to take over
in the summer? Do you want to wait and see how any interims do or who becomes available? Or is
someone that you think, yeah, that's who they ought to go for? I don't think there is an obvious
choice now. I would very, very much like the club and the decision makers to take a very, very long
think about this and understand where the club is supposed to be. You understand what the club is
and what kind of person you bring in who can bring out the values of Manchester United, which
is, and this is not saying that it was always better in the old days, but history very, very
often doesn't lie. Man United has been very, very successful over two spells, very long spells.
And both of those spells, the foundation of that was building from the academy and then
adding, you know, the cream on top by signing players like Cantana, Ronaldo, those kind of
players, but building the foundation from within the club. The thing about Man United, it's just
not any other club. We've been through, you know, we're at Louis
and Hall, we're in New 8, 10-Hal. We've had a lot of, you know, big-name
managers in, and it's not worked. And I think the reason it doesn't work is that
they come in, they know it's a short period of time that you have in football these
days. So they bring in their systems, and their systems don't work
at Man United unless you play the Man United way. And Chavez, we're both
growing up with Man United fans. We know exactly what that is,
though it's difficult to explain.
And I think they should think about that.
Very, very long and hard.
Who fits the bill?
It's all very well to see all these names
been throwing into the head at the moment.
I've heard Thomas Tuchel a lot.
I've heard Julian Nagelsman.
I've heard Chavi Zidan.
All of these big, big names.
But do they understand Manchester United?
Or are they big in themselves?
And they come in with their ideas.
And for me, there's been too many experiments.
And I think it's time now that we get the right person in
and we can look ahead for more than 18,
oh, this time it was 14 months.
And that, for me, I have to say that,
that for me is the most disappointing thing
that we, you know, we've had Ineos running the club for two years.
And it's our second manager signing.
That's not good enough for Manion, are you?
Lovely to see you, Peter.
See you, see you.
Thank you very much for coming on, Peter Smichael with us.
Thank you very much.
Have a good night.
You too.
You could.
argue, couldn't you, Rachel, that over the course of 12, 13 years, they've tried every
type, really. So a Premier League proven manager in David Moyes, a sort of leader on a European
scale, on a global scale, like Van Haler Marino, as Peter said, a club legend in
Solshar, then the bright managers of Europe who have succeeded in that team.
below the big five, I suppose, in Ten Haag and Amram.
They've tried every which way.
And almost, I think, the one person you would argue got more time than most expected was Amarham.
And I probably have...
On the back of results, right?
Yes.
Yeah.
And there was numerous times where you felt, surely they're going to make a decision.
And they didn't.
And you thought, well, is this the first time they are going to do that and say, we're giving somebody time?
Because we have to try and change the pattern that we're in.
As Peter mentioned, I grew up following Fergie and being a big fan of Manchester United as well.
And one of the hard things with modern day football now is, though, is it's just changed so much that it does almost feel with the manager's situation.
It's a little bit of a merry-go-round.
And I'm not sure enough people understand that Manchester United feeling that Peter talks about, that he feels that he feels that he feels, even people within the club who have a lot of decisions and a lot of power to change things.
It almost feels like it's going to be extremely difficult to resurrect that
because, you know, a team's go to Old Trafford now.
I think teams enjoy it because everyone knows the history of the club.
Everyone knows the history of the stadium.
And everyone thinks, happy days, we're going to go here and we've got a shot.
Whereas for so long, I remember growing up watching them,
you thought if the game's at Old Trafford, United will win.
Even if they don't play well, you just knew they were like,
the teams against them all feel under pressure, even if they take the lead.
There's players in that team that will just need one moment.
The last 10 minutes, it will be pressure on.
They hit the post, hit the bar.
they'll just be at them non-stop and I think that era seems so far away
that it almost now is working doubly hard against Mount United
because they don't have the same confidence
they don't play with that same atmosphere
and teams that come to the stadium as well
actually enjoy going there. I think there will be a lot of clubs
who feel like they want someone Shea who understands
their club inside out and in fact
I've heard in many discussions over the last few days
you know, Artetta, one of the reasons Artetta is cited at Arsenal
maybe a bit more patience was because he was a player at the club.
Therefore, with all the names being banded about,
if a Fletcher or a Carrick succeed in a certain period,
does that give them a chance or does that make it,
here we go again, down an Oliguna Solshire road for you?
Good question.
I'd just like to go back a wee bit and the managers just left
because, and I look at the team they have,
you know, Rubin was brought on to change the squad,
get rid of a lot of, I don't know what you want to call them,
maybe Deadwood or players who weren't pulling all in the same direction,
which I think, you know, any time under, I'm sure Peter will tell you,
any time under Alex Ferguson,
if you weren't pulling in the same direction, you were out the door.
And it felt they had someone in there to actually clear the Deadwood.
And I understand the playing style wasn't what everyone wanted.
I understand the results weren't what they wanted.
But if you looked at the bench in the last couple weeks,
there's a bunch of kids on the bench.
And with injuries and people at Afcon,
literally he's done well getting 11 players on the pitch
it seems and I felt he was a couple of windows away
still before you could actually judge him
so they give him 14 months I think was was wrong
you know I think at the talk at the start
I think Dan Ashworth maybe was against bringing Rubin in perhaps
he didn't agree with that he got sacked
now Ruben's got sacked you know I think the bigger problem
for me is the people making these big decisions
you know Peter said at the very start there
people at the top of the club need you take a long
I thought he's going to say take a long hard look at themselves
but he says take a long time to get the right guy
in charge. I don't think it's a magic one. I don't think
there's the right person out there. But the amount
of money and the amount of
wasties that's been at Man United over the last, whatever
he said, Chapters 12 years, has been
criminal really, isn't it?
And they have to get the next one right. And if that
takes time, and if it's Darren Fletcher,
all you're going to sauce to come back to do well, it'd be difficult
for them to be changed in the summer, I believe.
Rachel, Shane, thank you.
That's it from the Football Daily. Thanks for
listening.
