Starting point is 00:01:02 Listen on BBC Sounds Hello and welcome to the Football Daily podcast With me, Alistair Bruce Ball Tonight we've seen Bayern Munich run out 3-1 winners over Chelsea at the Alliant Two Harry Kane goals helping Bayern to a win there We need to start at Amfield though Where Liverpool, as they've been doing
Starting point is 00:01:20 So far this season, scored another late goal to beat Atletico Madrid They had thrown away a 2-0 lead But in typical fashion for them this season they found a way to win it late again. And Masparuki was watching, Mas. Yeah, well, to that 95th minute winner from the weekend, that 100th minute winner against Newcastle as well
Starting point is 00:01:40 earlier this season in the Premier League. Add tonight's 92nd minute bullet header from Captain Virgil Van Dyke in front of the cop as well to that list to give Liverpool the 3-2 win tonight first up against Athletico Madrid. Before that, a deflected volley from Marcus Lorette in the second half appeared to have given Aletico Madrid an unlikely point. At that point, it was 2-2.
Starting point is 00:02:03 He had pulled one back just before half-time as well to make it 2-1 at the break when Liverpool had dominated so much in the early stages, very early goals through Andy Robertson and then Mohamed Salah looking to put them in complete control. But then the second half played out as it did and then another winner for Liverpool in stoppage time. It just seems to keep happening in Arneslap time for them this season.
Starting point is 00:02:25 There was a red card as well for the Adletico, Madrid manager, Diego Simeone in second half stoppage time as the Liverpool fans behind his dugout celebrated wildly that Virgil Van Dyck header and he had to trudge down the tunnel before the full-time whistle and I haven't even mentioned a debut as well starting tonight.
Starting point is 00:02:42 Alexander Isak Liverpool's new number nine who looked good, linked up well with his new teammates as he got about an hour on the pitch tonight but all the drama happening when he was sitting on the substitutes bench and up here in the stand for Liverpool fans around me still with huge smiles on their faces as their side have left it late, but one again in stoppage time. Liverpool three of Lettico, Madrid, too. 58 minutes for Alexander Isak wasn't on the score sheet, but got a real taste of what a European night can be like at Anfield.
Starting point is 00:03:12 Maas, talk to me a little bit about Alexander Isak. What did you make of the performance this evening? I've got to say I had eyes on it. I was keeping an eye on the game at Bayern Munich as well. There was one lovely little link up between Vyitz and Isak in the first half, which very nearly led to a go. What did you think? Yeah, that caught my eye as well, Ali. That was a lovely little move down the right. And there was a couple of opportunities and moments in the second half as well, which really kind of underlined why Liverpool was so desperate to sign Alexander Isak in this summer transfer window.
Starting point is 00:03:41 There was a lovely little moment, a turn with his back to goal, got the ball under control, edge of the 18-yard box and turned and just flashed his effort just wide of the right post. One as well from a similar position a couple of minutes later that he fired straight at the Athletico Madrid keeper. so there was promise there and obviously these his first minutes in a club shirt this season taking a little bit of time to find his feet obviously enjoying the atmosphere as well
Starting point is 00:04:05 and you could see those relationships with his teammates really developing as well there was a good bit of chat and interaction with Cody Gapurro as well I'm sure that is going to be a relationship that flourishes so yeah good moments from him but obviously we're still really waiting
Starting point is 00:04:19 to see him sparkle into life in a Liverpool shirt yeah and someone who did spark into life though Mazas's moment Salah so obviously the first goal was a deflected free kick from him but the second goal was absolutely classic Salah and I was trying to watch him do that against Burnley at the weekend trying to work those moves in from the right-hand side and they couldn't get through Burnley Liverpool but they did get through atletico early on this evening and Salah looked very sharp
Starting point is 00:04:44 he did it was vintage Salah wasn't it that sort of run down the right a one-two edge of the Atletico Madrid area and he had two or three Athletico Madrid defenders sort of chasing him but afraid to try and get the tackle him because he was going at such pace before he then fired the shot away and obviously beat Yan Oblek in the Athletico Madrid goal. But it was an absolutely brilliant bit of skill from Mohammed Sala, which as you see Ali, we haven't maybe perhaps seen from him at times at the start of the season. He's maybe been a bit frustrated at times that things haven't kind of clicked into place for him. But tonight, I really feel was a step forward for him. He really, really enjoyed himself out there tonight. There were another couple of
Starting point is 00:05:23 occasions. There was one late on in the second half where he got forward on the counter attack, got the cutback across the face of the Athletico Madrid goal. But for some reason, Verts just couldn't get his shot on target. And he has been a couple of moments of frustration for him tonight where he perhaps could have had a couple of goals, Florian Verts. But it was a really, really impressive 90 minute display from Mohamed Sala tonight. They do look vulnerable. Very attacking lineup picked tonight. They've got a win again. But they do look vulnerable at the back at the moment. Yeah, they do. You think back to the ball, game, don't you? Think back to the Newcastle game. And I think the thing about this
Starting point is 00:05:57 Athletico Madrid performance tonight is kind of typical from what we expect from them. It's not particularly pretty football, but they just find a way to sort of grind down their opponents. And that's what they did to Liverpool, who really, after going 2-0-0, just six minutes in, should have been cruising, should have been in complete control. But just allow perhaps a bit of lapsing concentration and just to allow Athletico Madrid just to get a bit more possession in their half and just gradually build their way back into the game. And I think it is a concern, but there's always time at the moment it feels for Liverpool to find a stoppage time winner. It's certainly a way to keep the fans engaged anyway.
Starting point is 00:06:35 Mark, Switzer joins us now. Mark, what about the goals Liverpool have been conceding this season again tonight? What do you make of it? Look, I think for Liverpool, when you're ever you're as to attacking-minded as Liverpool are, you're going to give chances up to the opposition. You're going to be certainly against the better opposition. And, you know, Electro, Madrid, we all know, they're hardened warriors. They know what it takes to win games, staying games. They know how to, you know, see out results. And it was always going to be a tough game for them.
Starting point is 00:07:04 Yes, they got off to the perfect start, Liverpool, 2-0 ahead. You know, they had so many chances, they didn't finish the game off. That's part of the issue. And I think whenever you're 2-0 ahead, even a 2-0 comfortable kind of lead and you're dominating play, if you don't finish the opposition office, certainly like a team like a Lettigo Madrid, you always leave yourself open to the possibility of conceding one. When you can see one, then all of a sudden the door, you know, you get a bit shakier and it just needed a bit of a deflection like you saw Urenti's first, a second goal, great volley, but a
Starting point is 00:07:33 deflection and all of a sudden you find yourself, you know, back on level terms. But what Liverpool do, they've got determination and grit as well. Liverpool, they didn't give up, they didn't, they dust themselves off and they went for it again. We can now hear from on a slot. Now if you want to beat the team like Adetico which is known and has an unbelievable mentality you have to beat them with their weapon as well and that is mentality and I think that's what we showed again today that we can beat them also by mentality but I think we should have made it easier for ourselves at 2-0 first half we got more than a few chances to make the third at 2-1 second half we hit the post we were so close a few times but yeah if the margin is only one
Starting point is 00:08:15 goal, something can always happen and it happened. Maybe a little bit of deflected, I'm not sure, but a second ball went in. But then again, we showed the mentality because I think in that 10 minutes that still had to be played, we were pushing, pushing, and in the end we scored a piece goal. The fans here at Liverpool have finally seen the long-awaited debut of Alexander Isak a standing ovation for him when he came off. Happy with what you saw? Yeah, particularly because I think in the 16 minutes he played. He seemed to be quite fit to me. So it wasn't as if after 10 minutes he was already very tired. He could just play at this level quite well after only one or two weeks of team sessions. So that was the most positive thing and that he can play football and that he's a joy to watch. And yeah, that is not a surprise to me.
Starting point is 00:09:06 But he was maybe fitter than I expected. But again, that the fans don't get the hopes up too high because it's good that he had his first 90 minutes, but we play three times a week, and that's a bit too much for him still. So a start for him on Saturday in the Derby? Could be, but again, it could never be a 90 minute for him. So that is what we all have to understand,
Starting point is 00:09:29 and people sometimes know, why is that not possible? The problem is you need to make sure players are prepared for their program, and therefore you need to train with them. And that is at this moment of time not possible, but I'm really happy that he could start today. That's why we didn't play him against Burnley. And he was good today. And when Hugo gave him in, he was a big threat also.
Starting point is 00:09:49 So we have two great number 9s, and we're going to use them, both of them, throughout the whole period that they are here, but definitely now in the start. The 72 plus on the Football Daily. I'm Aaron Paul. And I'm Joby Mackinop. And on Wednesdays on the Football Daily,
Starting point is 00:10:07 we bring you 72 plus, the home of the EFL from five lives. as we'll get stuck into the latest from the Football League and beyond. They've got so much quality that, for me, worthy winners. They've only actually lost four games all season, which is quite remarkable, really. That's 72 plus, the EFL podcast only on the Football Daily. Listen on BBC Sounds. On the Football Daily podcast, Champions League debrief.
Starting point is 00:10:32 Listen on BBC Sounds. Yeah, so Liverpool got the win tonight. Chelsea didn't. They lost three-one away to Bayern Munich, the Premier League. team beaten there, but Ian Dennis, a couple of former Premier League players who really stood out for Byron tonight in Messrs Kane and Alisei. Very much so, Ali. Yeah, I think it was always going to be a daunting task for Chelsea and so it proved as Bayern for a 20 second successive season opened up their Champions League campaign with a win. Byron took the lead through a chelabar own goal after 20 minutes thanks to the tormenting Michael Alisei. He was outstanding in the first half.
Starting point is 00:11:08 Harry Kane then converted a penalty after he was fouled by Cicado. Parma reduced their ears, but in the second half by and took control, Sanchez kept Chelsea in it with three excellent saves. But Augusto mistake, punished by Kane for his second of the night, as Chelsea contributed to their own downfall. Palmer did have a late goal ruled out for offside, but make no mistake, a thoroughly deserved win for Bayern Munich. Pat, Chelsea obviously gave Harry Kane a couple of golden opportunities to score,
Starting point is 00:11:37 one from the penalty spot and the other one where the ball was given away. He was utterly ruthless and England will want that Harry Kane playing for them in the World Cup next summer. He looked great, didn't he? Yeah, give him chances he to score goals. Full stop. That is absolutely case with Harry Kane and it's never been any different. He will keep on going out in the right positions.
Starting point is 00:11:57 He could have easily got a hat-trick tonight. He went through near the end and he's one in one way to keep a difficult angle. First touch wasn't brown with his right foot. But in reality, he always gets there. He's always in the end of things. If you create chances, Harry Kane is the man, you want the end of him. And today he got his two goals.
Starting point is 00:12:15 Could have been more. I mean, that's his 10th goal of the season so far. Denner will keep me straight if I'm wrong, six games. I mean, absolutely stunning. And it's not just that. The other things he was doing during the game as well. Because he's got a bit of freedom here, he sees when something else is needed.
Starting point is 00:12:30 So if he says that he's playing up against two centre backs and they're getting comfortable with position, just drops in the midfield. And then he plays as a false name with the two wingers go and play as attackers. And they just asked a completely different question. And that question Chelsea
Starting point is 00:12:45 had no answer to tonight because then they started breaking and there was brilliant chances in the second half. Elisi had a shot from the left hand side. He was really lucky just to go past. Elisi missed a chance which again made by Harry Kane from the right hand side as usual.
Starting point is 00:13:01 Good to see him for the goalkeeper Sanchez but he really should have scored Elisi in that one. And again, I talked with that Kane chance, and then there was a Jackson chance near the end. So for the fact, it shows we're not embarrassed, but this is a leap. This is a jump. And this is a jump. It may take a wee well. Yeah, they dominated in Europe last season playing in the Conference League.
Starting point is 00:13:21 This season they're playing in the Champions League. Pat, bang on with the stats. 10 goals and three assists in six games this season for Harry Kane. 124 goal contributions in 102 matches for Bay Munich, phenomenal. Mark, you know the Bundesliga well. Do you think Harry Kane's move there has actually improved him as a player? Yeah, definitely. I think what it's done is it's allowed him, obviously, to experience, you know,
Starting point is 00:13:47 to play at the top level in terms of trophies, hunt for trophies. Champions League football year after year, by Munich is a, obviously, a top, top, massive club expectation. The minute walks through the door is completely different. It's about winning every single competition, every single game that they're in. I think, you know, the level of players he's playing with has helped him massively as well, whether he drops deep, whether he, you know, he's the one that's on the shoulder. You know, you mentioned then his goal contributions.
Starting point is 00:14:16 I mean, it's phenomenal. I mean, I've watched him loads since he's been in the Bundesliga, and he's just relentless. And I think there was someone. My rails sort of raised when he first went there, certainly for the price tag with the age that he's at, but he's more than delivered. And he's just kind of carried on, really, from Lewandalski. And that's what buy and do time and time again. They find another striker that continues to just score goal after goal. And Ian, we know it's a long old season and how much, you know, football these top footballers play.
Starting point is 00:14:48 Harry Kane looks after his body as, you know, as well as anyone. But as I said earlier on, England fans will be hoping, won't they? That he can just stay as sharp and as mobile and as focused and looking as good as that and carry it through all the way until next summer. But that's a long way off. It is, yeah. But we were saying in the buildup to the game that they regretted last season not finishing in the top eight of the Champions League
Starting point is 00:15:10 and playing those two matches and the playoffs against Celtic and then necessarily didn't help them in the long run. So they'll be looking definitely to avoid that by finishing the top eight. and for Harry Kane speaking to him ahead of the game he talks about you know you get small moments and small details when you're in such a competition like the Champions League and he's missed out he got to the semi-final in his first season in Germany they got to the quarters last season
Starting point is 00:15:35 and you know they're at a club that they are expected to compete you know they've reached the quarter finals in each of the last six seasons and with Harry Kane in the form that he's in 44 goals in his first season 41 last he scored now 10 in 6 this season And you mentioned those goal contributions. 95 goals and 29 assists in 108 appearances. His statistics are insane. And his penalty as well was his 33rd successive penalty for club and country.
Starting point is 00:16:06 So you're right. Thomas Tuchel and Vincent Company will hope that he continues this excellent form all the way through to the States. Here's the buy-in boss, Vincent Company. Every single time the question comes about Harry, I don't have much to say about all. the things that everyone can see. The main thing I can say is just watch him work off the ball, watch him press, watch him help the team, watch him recover, the chances we create, so the goal plus the penalty. You know, his first got to get back on side, he's first got pressed, then get back on side, then from there he starts his moment and of course the
Starting point is 00:16:44 the main thing for him is that if he spends that much energy is that he gets a reward and it gets the chances of the back of it but it's it's I think that's maybe the the side of it that I keep highlighting because we can talk about qualities and talent but in the end there's a lot of hard work for him to to be where he is I know Pat you'll be absolutely itching to Per about Michael Alise as well must do a bit on on Chelsea though what did you make of Chelsea in that performance this evening Pat it was a kind of performance I expected a lot of people were talking to us beforehand saying yeah they're just about to break in and they're the world club champions
Starting point is 00:17:23 and all that sort of stuff and I'm thinking steady on is it really steady on the jump you need to do to come to places like this is quite big and a number of the players just don't have that experience yet and they have to learn a little bit and we don't know if you know they've bought young are they going to be good enough to be able to dominate games at this level you don't really know you need to do it for a while you need to you know learn how to do it you need to find out if you are good enough and you have the personality to be able to do that. They weren't able to do it as a group today. Casero gave the ball away, well, we gave the penalty away and it was naive. Those sort of tackles you do in midfield, you don't do them in the box against Harry Ken. That was a wee bit naive.
Starting point is 00:18:02 Enzo, really, he certainly didn't shine today. He worked hard to do all that stuff, but didn't shine today. So, you know, they looked at a good distance behind, by a Munich. But then many people who come here do, because it's a tough. tough place to come. But for Chelsea, if they manage to still be in this competition, whether it's straight into the knockout or whether it's through, you know, the extra game, I think they'd be delighted
Starting point is 00:18:29 if they get to, you know, the latter stages, i.e. that level. Getting to quarters and semis, maybe a wee bit beyond them by that sort of performance. Yeah. And that's the point actually, isn't it, Mark? And I know, you know, there's still seven games to go in the group, so you don't panic if you lose the first one, particularly a tough game like
Starting point is 00:18:45 that, a way to buy-in. But because in the last four group games Chelsea are at home to Barcelona they've got trips to Italy to face Atalanta and Napoli which won't be easy it just puts a little bit of pressure on the next couple
Starting point is 00:18:58 which are both at home against Benfica and Iax as they settle back into life in the Champions League but there's no time to settle really no there isn't I mean and we talk about Benfica obviously they've just sacked their manager and there's a lot of talk about Josea Marino
Starting point is 00:19:12 possibly taking over there and what that would be sort of a reunion for Joseonrino coming back to Stanford Bridge, if that were the case. Yeah, for Chelsea, yeah, it's about now, they've got to pick themselves up. They've got a, it's a tough place to go, like the guys were saying, you know, to go to Munich and get a result is really difficult. By and our side that are certainly going forward ruthless, and they've showed that a game tonight.
Starting point is 00:19:36 But for Chelsea, yeah, you're right, it puts a little bit of pressure on them, but they've still got seven games to go. And you think with the squad of players, they've got the way they've performed over the last six months in particular, I think they've still got enough to get through to the knockout stages. Pat, who did you prefer watching this evening? Cole Palmer or Michael Alisei? Do you know there was a moment, it's a great question. There was a moment near the end of the game.
Starting point is 00:19:59 I mean, it was probably one. And Col Palmer, and at least he went over and talked to each other. And I was imagining in my head, they were saying to each other, something like, we're miles better than the rest of them, aren't we? It kind of felt like that, because they are absolutely beautiful on the ball. They see things that other players do. You obviously have to add Harry King to that as well, but they are very, very special players. You've seen a lot more of Elisi, and it was spectacular.
Starting point is 00:20:26 Now, to underline, you know, Cochere wasn't having a nightmare against him because he was up direct against him. He didn't leave him in his backside time and time again. It was something different from them. It was understanding the positions to take, the passes to make at the right times. Yeah, it got past them a few times. But when the chances were on, particularly the goal they made, it ended up being an own goal.
Starting point is 00:20:48 He knew when the danger was. He put that ball in there. And the understanding that Elyssie has with Harry Kane, that's a pretty spectacular thing. And that's something... I was expecting a wee bit more from Ganabri and Louis Diaz tonight. In the end, it was the Kane on Elisi show.
Starting point is 00:21:05 Once again, the Premier League, even when they leave, they're still the stars. Let's hear from the Chelsea boss, Enzo Moreska. I think the first 20 minutes, we start very, very good, creating two, three clear chances without conceding nothing then we consider the goal that
Starting point is 00:21:21 we can avoid that kind of goal and the dynamic change a little bit but even with that we were in the game we continue to play, we score a goal probably in the goal we score there is also a tough decision from the referee because you can also judge in different
Starting point is 00:21:37 way but no problem even with that we start second half because in the way we start second half was much better than first half until the goal we concede and then again for 10 minutes after the goal we concede the team was not good enough but again at the end we we try again we scored the second one but this kind of competition against this team required to be full focus and playing the right way for 95 minutes I think we play good but not for the entire game if you could just elaborate a little bit on the
Starting point is 00:22:09 jonathan tar incident you were booked after that goal did you feel that it should have been a red card For me, it's clear red card, yeah. Because there is not, I already said also in the Premier League, when there is not intention to go for the ball, and just the intention is to kick another player, why it's not red card? The referee said to me because it was not hard or aggressive enough. But in any case, you try.
Starting point is 00:22:33 So to give you the red card, they need to see the blood or they need to see the same thing. If the intention is to go, it's a red card. So for me, there is not any doubt. Pat, thank you very much to let you and Ian make your way into the Munich night. Chelsea next in action at Manchester United on Saturday. It is a commentary game on 5 live and BBC sounds at kicks off at half five. So Bayern Munich 3, Chelsea 1. Liverpool 3, Athletico Madrid 2, the late winner for Liverpool there. John Bennett's been keeping his eyes. He always does on the other games going on this evening and earlier on this afternoon.
Starting point is 00:23:12 John, so tell us the other stories. Paris Saint-Germain, sensational Ali, as expected, that they picked up where they left off last season. Four nil winners against Atalanta. So Marquinoz scored after just 133 seconds. Then a solo goal by Kavitschia, a sensational rocket shot at the end after a good run. Nuno Mendez, surely the best left back in the world at the moment, scored a great goal as well. Left the defender on the floor as he turned in the box, then a low shot. Late on, Gonzalo Ramos, as well made it for it.
Starting point is 00:23:43 It was like a training match at the end. Paris Saint-Germain in control. They were able to rest players. But Ali, if you do a Paris-S-J-Jame game this season, you might get a surprise. You might look to your left in the press box and see Louis Enrique sitting next to you because he's taken to watching the first half of games.
Starting point is 00:24:00 A few managers have done this in the past, but I can't remember any recently. He's watching the first half of games up in the press box now because he wants a better view. He's inspired by rugby coach, as he says. So you may see Louis-Senrique in the press box this season. Yeah. Well, I'd be worried about him overhearing.
Starting point is 00:24:15 That would be my concern. I'd be a little bit worried about being rude about the team. So they've got off to a thumping start, Mark Schwartz. Do you, I think Pat Nevins said earlier on this evening, he fancies them to defend the Crown. Do you see them winning the Champions League again? I mean, it's a big call, isn't it? I mean, I'm with Pat.
Starting point is 00:24:32 I feel that they are the favourites, but I think at this stage there are so many big teams and so many good teams that can still go on and win it. But PSG have certainly, I think they put down a marker and they showed last season, certainly with the way they finished the final, I mean, it was unbelievable. Can they kind of play like that again
Starting point is 00:24:49 against a top team at the right time? Only time will tell, but they look, they look so, so good all over the park. Yes, Chelsea made them look a little bit average in the club world cup final, but was that just a one-off, maybe?
Starting point is 00:25:04 So, yeah, I'm going to go with Pat, I think, at the moment. I'm not going to go as hard as Pat, Pat, by saying that they're going to win it. I'm going to say they're certainly one of the favour's, if not the favourite at the moment. Okay, there or thereabouts. John, what else? So Iax nil, inter two, two similar goals from Marcus Taram.
Starting point is 00:25:21 Chalonoglu with corners, Taram, headers. They were excellent inter. Iax did miss a good chance when it was nil-nil, but totally in control. And the debutants had good days as well. Bodo glimped, drew 2-2 against Slavia Prague after being 2-0 down. And earlier, Pathforce FC from Cyprus, drew nil-nil-nil against Olympiarchos, despite being down to 10 men for over an hour. So the debutant so far doing well in this season's Champions League.
Starting point is 00:25:47 Yeah, another night of Champions League football to come tomorrow as well. Two more commentaries for you across our network should say to you as well this evening.
