At the People World Cup 2026. with Rick Edwards and Lloyd Griffith Hello, you're listening to the Football Daily with me, Rick Edwards.
Starting point is 00:01:09 And me, Lloyd Griffith. Griffith. Slight hesitation, that's Griffith, isn't it? Sorry, I got to do get it wrong, it's Griffith, yeah, Griffith. Quick roundup of the scores for you. Argentina beat Austria 2-0. Guess who scored the goals? France, don't actually.
Starting point is 00:01:23 France beat Iraq 3-0. Guess he scored two of the goals, don't know. And Norway beat Senegal 3-2. Guess who scored two? We are recording before the late game, Jordan, Algeria, but all the scores and highlights will be available on the BBC Sport website and app. Now, you're probably wondering at home, what level of comfort are these two at with each other now?
Starting point is 00:01:44 Two weeks in, living together, working together. We'll put it this way. Without being asked today, I hung all of your pants out to dry that you'd left in the washing machine. But the really weird thing is, I was fine with it. I just saw them and I was like, I'll always have forgotten to hang these out.
Starting point is 00:02:03 I'll do that for him. It's even weirder. I haven't done any washing today. So producer Lizzie, you happy with Rick Edwards touching your smalls? I mean, listen, they're not smalls. Well, they were mine. I wear skims exclusively.
Starting point is 00:02:17 Other brands are available. I did see that. And that was, it was very nice. Yeah, interesting. You did see it, but you didn't say anything about it. You just took it as red. Of course he's hung my stuff out. I was like, that's nice of him.
Starting point is 00:02:30 Yeah. But internally. Yeah, but then I thought in my head, well, do you know what? When he's done it, he smells, I'll pop him out to dry. I think I can tell him my friends. Yeah. I dried Rick Edwards. And I won't mention the brand, but they're exactly what you'd think Rick Edwards would wear.
Starting point is 00:02:47 If you're thinking, what kind of boxer trunk does Rick Edwards wear, they are exactly what you're thinking. And same for you, actually. I have to say. Your granddad's wife rooms. What are you laughing, Lizzie? Here's a question for you. So I went for lunch today. A nice lunch.
Starting point is 00:03:07 Clang. Thank you. We'll wait for the Clang. In Brentwood. Essex? Yes. Clang? It was a long trip.
Starting point is 00:03:16 And indirectly, which Hollywood star paid for my lunch. Were they there? They were not there. But the person I was having lunch with. they work for this person and they put it on the business account. Tell me Rick Edwards has not gone full L.A. without telling me Rick Edwards has gone full L.A. Who's your record?
Starting point is 00:03:37 Is this the second meeting with an agent this week? It wasn't an agent. Okay. That's somebody who works at this individual's company. Right. Oh, right. Yeah. So use the company.
Starting point is 00:03:46 So not footballer. Not a football. Okay, right. Okay. So in the Hollywood star. Hollywood star. Yeah. Bought me lunch.
Starting point is 00:03:53 Indirectly. Okay. I'll emphasize indirect. Tom Cruise? No, but you know, it's not a million miles off that kind of level. Okay. Actor?
Starting point is 00:04:03 Yeah. But actually sort of like triple threat, I'd say. Maybe even quadruple threat, I mean, the whole lot. Actor, can sing, been to prison. Yeah, that's right. Okay, I'm going to say Jack Black? No, more impressive. More impressive.
Starting point is 00:04:17 It looks less, much less like you. Jack White. It looks less like me? Much, I mean, this guy, I'm not saying, he's not, the, oh, I've given you gender. He's not the opposite of you, but he's sort of, maybe he is. Will Smith? Much closer.
Starting point is 00:04:31 Much closer. Jamie Fox? Yes. Oh! I said, grew up. What do I win? I don't know. Okay.
Starting point is 00:04:39 I think I win because Jamie Fox brought me lunch. Indirectly. Indirectly. And when he listens to this, and it is a way. And he will. He will. He'll be like, I won't do the impact. I won't do it.
Starting point is 00:04:48 I'll do. I'll do it. Please. I'll do it. He's from Texas. He's from Texas. They'd be like, y'all, I can't believe you,
Starting point is 00:04:56 I can believe he got lunch off my. Is that all right? Where is Texas? Still in America, is it? Yeah. Okay. Okay. Should we talk about something else quickly?
Starting point is 00:05:12 Okay. Yeah, do you want to talk about the table tennis? Oh, yeah, we played table tennis today. We did play table tennis today. Rick Edwards. And he might ask for a veto here. I will ask for a veto, probably. Gas litters or.
Starting point is 00:05:23 I basically going, Oh, guys, I am bad at table tennis. This is table outside, and there's these little bats and there's these small little white balls. I think they call it Tablet Tenney. Does anyone want a game? We're like, why being so weird about it? Should we just play Tablet Teni?
Starting point is 00:05:39 And then me, producer Lizzie, and producer Jonathan from the Five Live Breakfast, we played, and it became pretty apparent that you clearly have spent a lot of time in quite posh common runes in either sick forms or Oxford School's, playing table tennis and sharking people for money.
Starting point is 00:05:55 I'm not good at table tennis. You're just worse. Well, actually, you were mentally weak. Oh my gosh. You were. This is a weird angle to go down. I was mentally strong. Physically weak.
Starting point is 00:06:08 You were taller and you had the wind in your favour. And you should try that too that I've got. We swapped ends. Yeah, we did swap hands. No, you were good. I will beat you over time. How long are we here for? I think we are going to play.
Starting point is 00:06:22 again. One last bit of business and I realise we're not going to get all of this business in but still we just cut out the football. Yeah, exactly. It's only half the title. This is the daily. The daily. This is the daily. What have we done today? Also, four amazing players scored incredible goals
Starting point is 00:06:39 and I've just realised it's three. Yeah, it is three. So I had a message from a guy called Dave on Instagram and he said I imagine that commissioners are queuing up for you both to present a number of shows. Oh, lovely. And then he suggests the shows we could present.
Starting point is 00:06:56 And I just want a yes or no from you on each of them. Oh, I love this. First up, Grimsby Port with Rick and Lloyd. Yes. Oh, croaky. Britain's favourite bus route. Yes. It's the 3C.
Starting point is 00:07:10 Yeah. And Cathedral Spireale. I'm doing that on my own. Oh, what? I am not letting you in on that. I'd rather do it. You want company on the train? Yeah, if I'm doing it, I'm doing with Michael Portillo.
Starting point is 00:07:21 I've obviously taken him. Him trains me cathedles. I was about saying, I'm not sure which commissioner did, but I think we all know it's Channel 5. So we were billing today as the day of the superstars, and it lived up to the hype. Messi and Bappe and Harland, all scoring two in their games.
Starting point is 00:07:41 So that's four for Mbapé so far, four for Harland, five for Messi. None for Cristiano Ronaldo, but he hasn't played his second game yet. He hasn't been a second game. Let's bring in from Five Lives, Euroleagues, Julian Laurent. Hey Julian, how you doing?
Starting point is 00:07:54 Yeah, guys, I'm doing great. Thank you. And you? Yeah, pretty good. Where are you? So we went to Philly for the game between France and Iraq with all the weather, the bad weather, the interruption. So my train, I was supposed to take the train back down, which was cancelled. So kindly, our Five Lives crew, so Pat Nevin, George Cummings, Ian Dennis, said, why don't you jump in with us?
Starting point is 00:08:17 And we drive back. So we drove back from Philly. Road trip, the fun bus. I mean road trip. Pat Nevin with a DJ. His playlist is awesome. Of course, obviously. Yeah. And he was lovely. It was really nice. Who's designated driver there? Is it George? Yeah, George was. It drove really well. I did say if you get tired, I can drive. You know, no problem. But he was perfect. I don't know if I trust. Do I trust the French driving? Not sure. It's the same side of the road.
Starting point is 00:08:41 True, actually. You shouldn't. Let's talk about Lionel Messi then. Still breaking records. So today, these are the world records he broke. Most World Cup finals goals ever, 18. Most World Cup matches played by an individual. Most matches won by a player at a World Cup, 18. Most minutes played in the World Cup, 2489. Like, I don't even know where, I don't know what to say anymore about the guy.
Starting point is 00:09:14 It kind of defies explanation, doesn't it? Yeah, completely. And when you think that some of the World Cup, that he played and that's his sixth World Cup, obviously. Some were not even great success. You know, okay, 2014, they went all the way to the final and they lost to Germany. 2022, of course, they won it.
Starting point is 00:09:32 But 2018, they lost to France in the last 16 and to Killian, 2006, 2010, all those competitions. So it could have been even better had they reached later stages in the competition. I just think that is a day short now of his 39th birthday to see him still perform like this. in a team that obviously plays for him, he's built for him, around him.
Starting point is 00:09:54 It's still great. And to even see him scoring late in games after 90 minutes like he did today again against Austria, his credit to his fitness, the longevity, the mentality that he has, it's just, I think we show us about it. But I think if there was any doubt for some people that he was not the greatest of all time, more than Cristiano or Maradona or Pellea,
Starting point is 00:10:14 I think so far what he's done, even if he's just Austria and Algeria, showing for me that he's the greatest of all the time. The mad thing is that he was going to retire from international football like 10 years ago. That was the chat and you think, well, I'm glad you didn't, mate. You still got something to offer. I really believe that. And I mean, there's retirement for your age and when you feel like, okay, I've done it all now and I can go
Starting point is 00:10:39 and this probably will happen after this World Cup. But the time is before where he did retire and say like I've done out is because things were not working for him with Argentina. back home or the expectations. People are saying like, hang on, why are you so good with Barcelona and not good enough for us? What can you carry our team back to another World Cup? Since then, you know, they didn't want a World Cup since 1986 and Maradona.
Starting point is 00:11:01 So I think all of that was like, this is too much. I can't take all of this anymore. So let me walk away now. And you're right, it's great that he changed his mind or whoever changed his mind those couple of times where he retired before really having the edge of retiring. Now it's just pure pleasure. And the pressure is off because he won't the World Cup in 2022, which was the Holy Grail.
Starting point is 00:11:22 So now he's a bit more like, hey, let's just enjoy those last moments, the last dance. He missed a penalty, early doors. He did miss a penalty. And he's just sort of, may you forgive him, really, don't you? You kind of go, oh, well, he's going to score anyway. Yeah. It doesn't matter. And he was obviously got it.
Starting point is 00:11:37 What I love, though, Jules, was when he did score. It was quite a bad penalty. It was like, do you know what was really nice? If I'm going to nitpick. Do you know what? Do you know what? You know what was really nice? Just watching Lionel Messi, miss a penalty, going.
Starting point is 00:11:47 I can actually do that. I can actually do what message is done. I can miss a penalty. I mean, maybe not on the world stage. But then it obviously scored a little bit later. What I loved, what I really loved is how much it meant to the whole team. And we've talked so many times this tournament about how in these teams you've got players that are they individuals? Are they team players?
Starting point is 00:12:08 Clearly, in the Argentin team, he loves those players and those players love him. And you could see when he celebrated how much it meant, not just to him, but to the whole. of the team. I think it's brilliant. There's this lovely story, I mean, lovely story, in a way that shows you the status. The Argentines are two per rooms
Starting point is 00:12:25 in their base camp, except Messi. Messi is the only one to have his own room just for him. He doesn't share with anybody. This is who is. And you've seen all those footage of the rest of the squad
Starting point is 00:12:38 waiting for him at the end of the tunnel until he's there. And only once he's there, then he starts walking out and everybody follows behind. And it's just like that. I think this is a team where they all play for him and he's the main guy. But he loves those guys who are there for him all the time and stuff.
Starting point is 00:12:56 Argentina has scored five goals in this tournament and Messi scored all of them. That kind of tells you everything you need to know. And they're not playing great, you know as well. That's the other thing. They're not playing great. Today was not a great performance collectively. No, and it just kind of doesn't really matter when you've got that little man. The great thing about this tournament is we're seeing loads of goals.
Starting point is 00:13:14 We're seeing big performances from big players. and although these players, Messi, Harland, and Bappe, they are playing for their teams. You get the sense that they do,
Starting point is 00:13:25 they are aware of what the others are doing because of course they are. And so when Messi goes and scores two goals and Bapé then comes out and scores two goals and then Harlan comes out
Starting point is 00:13:35 and scores two goals and like it's just, it's like they are having their own personal competition as well and I like it. I think it's amazing. It's amazing for us. I think it's great for the world.
Starting point is 00:13:46 World Cup because like we said, that stage belongs usually to the best, to the greatest. And Bapé today, we saw him after the game and he said, oh, you know, there's no sag that, the kind of no race, no saga between me and Leo. And I'm not looking at what he does, which is not really true because as we know, they all check on, okay, where is who, the aim for everybody to win the World Cup. But if you can win the Golden Boots as well, trust me, those guys with huge drive and ambition who are there for that and break records and be the best, they would take that as well. Mbapé, so he equals closest record today, and he's got so much time left.
Starting point is 00:14:27 That's the thing. It feels inevitable, maybe not at this tournament, but in a future tournament, he will overtake Messi's goal tally. Yeah, I think so. And I think the thing for him is he scored 16 goals and 16 games in the three World Cups that he took part of. it took closer 24 games to get to 16 and Messi's on 28
Starting point is 00:14:48 as you mentioned Rick at the start 28 to get to 18 Kiliang is 16 in 16 is a goal per game ratio which is incredible really at that stage and you're right he's 27 he will turn 28 in December so there's another World Cup for sure it would be 32 unless he's injured
Starting point is 00:15:03 and maybe even another one so more games probably more goals to to score and it's just again I think he's drive and ambition to go and make sure that he gets this record to a level that nobody else could reach. And also as well, Laminia Miles scored yesterday. If he scores two or three more this tournament, you kind of look at him and go, well, actually, he's got four or five in him.
Starting point is 00:15:29 Is he going to even overtake Mbapé when he overtakes Lina Messey? So I think just as a football fan, you've just got to go, what an era we're living in? What a tournament, what an era, and just embrace it? I mean, I'm absolutely buzzing. It's incredible. And the thing is, you can look at Harlan's, but you also need to go far in those tournaments.
Starting point is 00:15:46 You know, Kiliang is there because there's two finals in the two World Cups he played. And Lamin probably has that as well, potential with Spain to go really far in the four, five or six four cups he's going to play now. For Harlan, let's see. You know, nowhere might do well, but you really need to get those games going to be able to get to 25 or 20, even 20 goals or whatever the record would be or something. I like the fact that the real. rest of the world are
Starting point is 00:16:13 kind of familiarising themselves now with Erling Harland in quite a funny way. I think we've become slightly just like used to him. We know that he's just this kind of colossus, this machine, this goal scoring machine. And there's all these memes
Starting point is 00:16:29 that I'm basically doing the rounds. People being like, there is nothing scarier than this man, ah, running after you. And it is really funny. Because it's making me see him through fresh eyes again. Yeah, he is terrifying.
Starting point is 00:16:47 He doesn't stop scoring goals. He doesn't stop scoring goals. And he basically, if he's playing, he will score. It's kind of that simple with him. Yeah, in the first half, he didn't have a single shot, didn't it today. And I think you think, okay, maybe it's just an off there for him. It's just not happening. Like we saw, for example, when they play Morocco in the friendly before the World Cup,
Starting point is 00:17:10 where he had like four touches in 17 minutes and never looked like scoring. And today was a bit like that in that first half. And yet two goals, bam, bam, back to... It's just like that, you're right. How efficient is, how clinical it is. It's just a monster. And you're right, because some people in the world
Starting point is 00:17:29 only watch the World Cup every four years, and that's it. They're not watched the Premier League like us. They're not daily on the football thing. For them, it would be like, who's this giant long? long blown hair, Viking there. Okay, it's him.
Starting point is 00:17:44 And then, yeah, you discover him like that. You mentioned Mbapé's goal a game ratio in the World Cup. Now, that is good, but he's no Dennis Undav. So he... Rick loves Undav. I do. I just think, look, do you know his stats? He scored three goals.
Starting point is 00:18:02 Do you know what his goals per minute is? 11? No, it's not quite that good. It's a goal every 19 minutes. That's pretty decent. Killion's taking 90. pathetic. He's no under.
Starting point is 00:18:13 And you know when his birthday is? No. On July 19th, the day of the final. If that's not a good home, man. Dennis Undhbs scores a hat trick on his birthday in the World Cup final. Can you imagine? We kind of assumed, and correctly, that today was going to be dominated by the superstars of world football. It was also slightly dominated by the weather.
Starting point is 00:18:36 Now, you were there, and I've never. Well, I've seen stuff interrupted for weather before. I don't think I've ever seen it interrupted for two hours and ten minutes. That's crazy. Me neither. And I was there in 2012 when France played Ukraine in the Domba Serena in the Euros 2012. And where the rain was crazy, they started the game somehow, but five minutes, then it was top for an hour. They finished the game on what was a quite waterlog pitch.
Starting point is 00:19:05 But that was a lot of rain. Today was something else, man. I have to say all day long we've had warnings about the thunderstorms are coming and at some point the game could be stopped. But until it's there, until you are told you need to go to Sheltona because this is dangerous. You don't really, it's not that you don't believe, but you want to see it. And that first happened. We even thought with Deno on commentary and Pat that it was brighting up on the right side of
Starting point is 00:19:32 the stadium. And actually, next thing we know is like you need to evacuate, go somewhere safe inside. So now here we are, filling the air with cross. man for two hours. I mean, we did a bit of politics, obviously first, not us, but the professionals. And then we talked about, okay, why is it to be in that kind of position? But two hours is a long time, even for the players, you know, and Deshaun was saying after the game, we played cards, we had a chat, and then every 20 minutes, they said, yeah, yeah, you're going to be back soon, and then it was pushed backwards again and again and again. And it can't be easy, really.
Starting point is 00:20:03 So credit to the players to still maintain a really good level in our second half. I think France played even better in the second half. after the break. But for us, it was quite unreal of like, okay, when are we back on this game? It's the game maybe even be allowed to finish tonight. I mean, it was, yeah, it was a real shift. I was listening to some of the Five Live filling.
Starting point is 00:20:24 And it was, like, I felt sorry for you guys, but I was also laughing. Because there was a point where Stephen Warnock was just kind of listing slow release energy foods. It's like, yeah. Listen, whatever it takes. Whatever it takes. Also, spare a thought for Keir Starmory who, like, listened in to listen to the football.
Starting point is 00:20:46 They're like, oh, God, they're talking about me again. Leave it alone. I also thought about Tieri Omri and Satan Ibrahimovich and Alexei Larlas. Have you been following this, Jules? Yeah, I love it. There's a bit, it's incredible. There's a bit of friction there. And the thought of those three happened to hold for two out of ten minutes.
Starting point is 00:21:07 Wow. I mean, Larlas has done well to get out without getting round-housed by his latter. No, I haven't seen this, but apparently there's a video of commentary team doing the Macarena. Were you getting involved with that? Were you leading it? I was filming it. I kind of encouraged him to do it a bit, to be there. Yeah, of course, yeah.
Starting point is 00:21:30 But yeah, because what happens was, the players were warming up for the second time to start that second half. the, I don't know, the music guy in the stadium, starting putting all those bangers, as you can imagine. I live in on a prayer and Macarena and 500 miles or whatever. And people, you could see on the big screen, people were singing, and then Stephen Warnock was on fire, and we were like, okay, Denno revealed what is karaoke, which was Deacon and something.
Starting point is 00:22:02 And it was just like, it was freestyling, it was all over the place, it was just like, you know, we'd lost it by them. Yeah, of course, yeah. Yeah, you don't need to make excuses. I need to see this video. Yeah, I'm going to let you go to bed and chat to you soon. Thank you, mate.

Starting point is 00:23:25 My favourite World Cup moment? It's the first World Cup I properly remember watching. Argentina 78. The ticker tape, Mario Kempers, Ari Hahn's scoring goals from miles out, and always one of my favourite World Cup moments. Archie Gemmels great goal for Scotland against the Dutch. What makes the World Cup such a special tournament
Starting point is 00:23:45 is the atmosphere, the colour, it is a meeting of the nations, and of people who love football. The People World Cup 2026, Listen on BBC Sounds. The football day at the People World Cup 2026. With Rick Edwards and Lloyd Griffith. Live from LA.
Starting point is 00:24:05 So England are playing later today. They take on Garner in their second game of the groups. Build up from 8 o'clock on 5 live. Kickoff is 9pm. BBC Sports England reporter Kelly Summers joins us now. Hey Kelly, how you doing? I'm giddy, Rick. I'm actually so excited. It's so nice to be going into an England game
Starting point is 00:24:21 with all this enthusiasm. excitement. So yeah, I'm really looking forward to it. I honestly thought that you were going to say you were giddy about appearing on our podcast. I was like, oh, that's nice. So did that. That's love you to say. I did. I did send Lloyd a message the day and say I've been an avid list. You did. I don't think I said I was giddy. You did. And I was very complimentary. And I was like, well, let's get you on and here you are. And I'm, I'm giddy that you're on the show. We're both. We're both kidding. Very good. Thank you.
Starting point is 00:24:47 I think I said I really enjoyed producer Lizzie's, the impression you do of producer Lizzie, which got me in a bit of trouble. Yeah, I've got a few emails from HR, so I've had to stop doing that. Do one more? I think if you improve it, it'll probably be okay. Do one more. Hello, my name's Lizzie, and I'm from Liverpool. That wasn't so good.
Starting point is 00:25:04 That sounded a bit manly. Do a lady one. You're right there, my name's Lizzie. I'm from Liverpool. I love Sala. I always will do it. Right, let's crack on with England stuff, please. No, do another couple of lines.
Starting point is 00:25:17 No, Rick, come on. All right. Kelly, you've been in the camp since the start of the tour. It's a bit of a cliche, but I feel like I have to ask what the mood is like there, because it does feel different to normal England camps. Do you know, I said it was a bit risky saying it ahead of the first game. I stood pitched up with Paul Robinson the day before they played Croatia. We both said, it just feels a bit different.
Starting point is 00:25:38 And Sammy Mockbell, who's also been in camp as well for the BBC, we're all kind of whispering it because we've been here before, and obviously we spoke a lot, didn't we, about Garas, Southgate changing the culture. But this time, I can't quite put my finger on it. have been thinking about it a lot. I think it's the atmosphere that Thomas Tuchel's created, it goes back to, if you think about the treatment of Jude Bellingham,
Starting point is 00:25:59 like he's kind of shown him as the over recent months, he said, we need you, Jude, but we can do it without you, and it's not about individuals now, and it just feels like that's really brought everyone together. I know that's so cliched as well, but I've interviewed Cobby Mayneau, who hasn't started, we're not talking about
Starting point is 00:26:14 him as a starter, but he seemed as happy as Declan Rice, if you know what I mean, it just feels, I don't know if you've seen some of the stuff they've been up to you this week, they went to the baseball. Dan Byrne and Harry Kane went country dancing, but then we see them out of training the other day. And it's so unbelievably intense. It just feels like he's got that balance right. And they're all just having a great time. I wish I had some, well, I don't wish I had some kind of bad news, but it really is as good as it seems from the outside, from what I've seen anyway.
Starting point is 00:26:41 It's that thing, isn't it? You just said balance, where you know that he's a bit of a disciplinarian. And we've heard, you know, Jed Spence and Ollie Watkins' talking. about the fact they'll shout at them and he's obviously very happy to do that but somehow he's doing that whilst also keeping everyone on side. I think what the player said about his half-time speech as well
Starting point is 00:27:01 I think that's been quite interesting. It was almost like they were all shocks like they all play for top managers they've played for a top manager in Garas Alco who's taking them to finals but it's like he's got an aura that's what I think it is like he has this presence
Starting point is 00:27:14 when I posted on my Instagram earlier when Thomas Tugall speaks you listen because he's got a brilliant way with words which, by the way, is no mean feat in his second language. And I think at the moment, he's just got those players, like eating out the palm of his hand, which obviously is easy to do when they've got and had a second half performance after his team talk. So, yeah, I can't, as you can tell, speak highly enough.
Starting point is 00:27:34 But as we know with England, it can change very quickly. Have you seen him meet quite strict, like in and around the camp or at training? We get to see 15 minutes of training every few days. And it was, so they were given Thursday and Friday. We weren't allowed in Thursday and Friday. I think they had some downtime Friday. And Saturday we went into training. And normally you kind of need a binoculars because they trained so far away.
Starting point is 00:27:57 They trained right in front of us. And it was properly set up mannequins and everything. And all of his coaching staff were there. He was there on the halfway line as well. And they were barking orders. Things like we play as we train. We train as we play. Don't let the intensity drop.
Starting point is 00:28:11 That's where that Jed Spence clip comes from that you might have seen doing the rounds on social media. I think Five Live actually put out where someone like, He wasn't afraid in front of the media of saying, Jed, you need to keep up with it. And Jedd Spent said after, oh, he's done that to all of us. He kept saying, wake up, didn't he? Like, wake up, Jed, wake up. Yeah, it wasn't the most complimentary.
Starting point is 00:28:30 But he did that in front of us. And I felt like that was a bit of a statement as well. That was him saying, yeah, yeah, we do the fun stuff, but we do the hard stuff as well. Who have you been speaking to in the last few days from the team? Oh, do you know, I've had a really good few days of interviews. No, no, it's not that I'm saying that there's bad interviews in the squad. Declan Rice on Saturday and Elliot,
Starting point is 00:28:49 Anderson on Sunday. And I mean, in terms of two influential players for England, but don't really get much better, do they? Declan says he's fit. I'm still not totally convinced, but he was charismatic as ever. And Elliot Anderson's just incredibly humble and doesn't seem to realise quite how good he is. When you say fit, is it the sunburn or something more serious than that? Well, no, he didn't mention the sunburn until the end of him to you. And then he stopped and went, and I'm now killing him by revealing it. He stopped and lifted his t-shirt up and went, I'm really glad you didn't notice. Look, it's got me again. the sandbone has got me again and I was like, unfortunately I'm going to broadcast that somewhere deck
Starting point is 00:29:22 so everyone's going to know. And what's this about Declan Rice and his slippers? He came into the interview and he didn't have shoes on and was like, am I feet in this? And we were like, yeah. I still don't understand why he didn't have shoes and I think maybe he'd left him outside or something. So he put hotel slippers on and then he was like, oh, they're incredibly comfy and I was like, but also why have you got your hotel slippers here?
Starting point is 00:29:41 Well, maybe his normal slippers were stolen in that hall a few weeks back and the only thing it wasn't returned, just monogram slippers. The rest of the England players, Covey Maynor and Elliot Anderson both had these other shoes on that look like kind of like space boots. And I've said to both of them, what are they? And they're like, oh, these are these incredible recovery boots.
Starting point is 00:30:01 So then you have Declan Rice coming in without any shoes. I don't know what's going on with the footwear department. No idea. But also, yeah, I'm the same as you. I've got a lot of questions. So if you are travelling with a pair of hotel slippers, why are you not wearing them? Because you don't want to ruin them.
Starting point is 00:30:17 Oh, you don't want dirty hotel slippers. I'll give you that. Maybe they want his slippers. I don't know. He was just given a pair of slippers. Sorry, you accusing Declan Rice of stealing someone else's slippers now? That is controversial, Kelly. And we will leave it there.
Starting point is 00:30:30 We were hoping for an exclusive and we've got one. We don't know who's starting, but we know who's a thief. He's also been speaking glowingly about playing with Harry Kane and what a privilege it is and sort of excited to tell his. kids about it. If you're an England player and you're playing with Harry Kane, if you're any footballer, is there anyone better, really? I mean, yes, Messi. There's a few better
Starting point is 00:30:55 players to play with than Harry Kane. And if you're Declan Rice, the set piece king, as he actually spoke to me about the other day, and you've got Harry Kane, you know you're going to get loads of assists because you can put the corner in as he showed, and he's going to score. I think Harry Kane, I've noticed a real difference in Harry Kane as well. Firstly, he's incredibly tanned, and let's be honest,
Starting point is 00:31:12 everyone looks better when they've got a tan. And he's obviously come into this tournament off the best season, ever, and just the way he walked around the interview zone post-match the other day, he's got that aura where you go, oh, Harry, you're amazing because he is. So, yeah, I think I'd want to play with him. How is Harry Kane like day-to-day? Because obviously, we've been talking a lot about the superstars of this tournament.
Starting point is 00:31:32 Everyone is scoring your Mbapes, you're lying on messes, your Harlins. And there's a lot of hype around Harry Kane, but it seems that he's kind of going a little bit. Obviously, he scored twice a day, but it seems like he's going a little bit under the radar. How is he day-to-day? he coping well or is he excited? Do you know what we haven't, he hasn't come in and done a press conference or a sit down with us yet, but the one thing I'd say with Harry, and this is my fourth major tournament with England, he never really changes. And I think that's almost his biggest superpower because he doesn't
Starting point is 00:32:00 seem to get too high, he doesn't seem to get too low. And he came out and as he was, I did him in the, obviously the game wasn't on the BBC the other day, but he did still interview him. And he, as he came up, oh, Kelly Howie, haven't seen you for a while. Like the usual small talk. And then he just, I was like, oh gosh, you've just scored two goals and been amazing. He goes, so, was the game on BBC tonight? And it's just like, he's just scored two goals for England and he just takes everything in his stride. And I think that's why he's so impressive.
Starting point is 00:32:24 You never really know how Harry Kane is. The only time I've ever really seen him switch, obviously he looks disappointed when we lost finals. But I interviewed him straight after he missed the penalty in 2022 in the quarterfinal in Qatar. And that was the first time where you were like, oh my gosh, this poor guy's crushed. Understandably so.
Starting point is 00:32:40 But yeah, he's unflappable. And what about Elliot Anderson? I feel like I don't know. that much about him as a character. He kind of goes about his business quite quietly. He's just, he feels so young. I don't know. They're so silly because compared to, I'm going to put us all in the same bracket here,
Starting point is 00:32:56 guys, sorry. Compared to all of us, they are young now. Like footballers feel like they're getting younger as we're getting older. But he, he's a man of few words. But like I said to him, I said, did you notice the other day that all of the midfield came off apart from you? I think that shows how important you are to England. He was like, oh yeah, I don't really thought about that.
Starting point is 00:33:14 Like, yeah, I suppose. So he just feels like a kid that loves football, incredibly level-headed, just had an amazing rise. Obviously, he's had a difficult few months as well off the pitch too. But what a footballer, how lucky we are to have him. And there's loads of noise around him as well. And he doesn't even seem to be that phase by that. Yeah, we're very lucky, I think. Have you, either have you seen Stephen Gerrard doing his England 11?
Starting point is 00:33:39 One of the other broadcasters is just going through. So, okay, wine at Pickford and then Conzer, Gooey, and everyone's like, sorry, who? Gouey. I thought you'd got it wrong then. So I thought it was awkward. Yeah, cause him Gouie. I don't know how he's got there, really. It might be a nickname.
Starting point is 00:34:03 He knows him. Is it a scouse accent? Can you ask Lizzie if that's a scalding accent? Producer Lizzie. No, she's saying not. She's angry, actually. Say gooey and. Scouse accent? Gooy?
Starting point is 00:34:12 Yeah. Hey, I'm going with gooey at the bath. Oh, you have seen it? I haven't seen it. It's excellent. Look for it. Well, Kelly, are we going to let you go to bed now? Because it is quite literally past your bedtime, isn't?
Starting point is 00:34:26 It literally is, and I feel like I've been a bit delirious in that interview. I'm normally meant to be a serious journalist. I end up talking about players' footwear and...
