I'm Sefi. And I'm Wing. And we are talking about the much discussed, much talked about, much marketed, much watched Barbie movie and I'm so excited to be here. Like I can't believe we're finally having this conversation. Spoiler zone. Spoiler zone. So many spoilers. If you haven't seen Barbie yet, don't listen to this but if you have seen Barbie and you just want a bit of a chat
Starting point is 00:01:22 about Ryan Gosling, Greta Gerwig, Margot Robbie. We're not going to go through the whole fucking cast. Michael Cera. Then you're in the right place. This is a really fun chat about the movie of the year, really. So enjoy. Stunning. Hi, Barbie.
Starting point is 00:01:39 Hi, Barbie. Hi, Barbies. I knew you were going to say hi, Barbie. I was like, I know what I'm going to say straight away. It is three, two, one. In my head I was like, she's were gonna say hi barbie i was like i know what i'm gonna say straight away it is three two in my head i was like she's gonna say hi barbie hi barbie hi barbie hi kem hey guys hey what a fun episode we have in store i'm really quite excited for this the second the credits rolled i thought wing wing i have had this episode on the tip of my tongue since i first saw it yeah so how many times have you seen it now there's a lot going on here with
Starting point is 00:02:12 we're filming we're recording so it's like the laptop is being pushed to its limits to its absolute max who knows what i'll do next dump matcha all over it oh god don't even joke no i would never know honestly don't even joke from the seven wing law that we're terrified of match that i still match all over my laptop um yeah i've seen it right confession so i saw it once in the cinema then i saw it again in the cinema and then she's pirated she's bootlegged i have allegedly hypothetically speaking found a link you wouldn't steal a car you wouldn't steal a handbag but you would have to watch barbie again steal the barbie movie so i did yeah out of greta's hands you pried out she wanted me to have it you know what like she wouldn't i just thought this would make barbie so sad if she knew that i wanted to see her and i couldn't for whatever reason so cinema's fucking expensive now as well it's a joke it really is r.i.p orange wednesdays god i
Starting point is 00:03:10 wish i ever had it i i live for them orange wednesdays my friend had it and i lived for her orange wednesdays i'm stuck on vodafone boring um i would love to say this is brought to you by ee but it's not oh god, God. Kevin Bacon. That'd be a dream. Is the guest. Put that on the dream brand list. Whoever that is. Like, who is Kevin Bacon? Kevin Bacon. He's a star.
Starting point is 00:03:30 I only know him from those adverts. He is a star, right? What's he in? Apollo something, maybe? Yeah, exactly. He's in EA. He's also in something. Like Footloose.
Starting point is 00:03:42 He's in fucking Footloose. I knew it. I knew it. He's in Footloose. Good for him. Footloose he's in fucking footloose i knew it i knew it he's in footloose yes good for him yeah um barbie let's go i have a fun thing to that i just found out um it's actually not fun but like i just went downstairs to make my cup of tea and my mum was like how many have you done i was like we've just recorded one now we're just about to do barbie and she was like oh well you'll love this she was at work um yesterday and someone came in and they're having a little chit chat and she was um eavesdropping and they were saying it was someone that she knew as well so i think she's actually in the conversation um and they were saying that oh they went to see barbie last night
Starting point is 00:04:21 and someone walked in and they went oh my god that looks like boris johnson and it was boris johnson no way in the barbie movie absolute jump scare in the cinema not in the barbie movie no no they sat down starring in the cine world cinema no in didcot so my local cinema what's he doing there didcot cine world He has just moved to a little known village called Brightwell Come Sotwell. Brightwell Come Sotwell? No way! Yeah. I remember you saying that at uni.
Starting point is 00:04:49 Our friend lives there. Yeah. Oh my. He has just moved there. You're going to be running into him. He's bought a house there. I'm sorry to say you have to burn the city to the ground. I know.
Starting point is 00:04:58 I know. So she was in the Didcot Cineworld, which, let me tell you, is my local cinema. Oh my god. It is not nice. It's modern day colonisation. It is crazy that he's here because it is not somewhere you expect to see the ex-Prime Minister. Scumbag of the earth. That really is gossip.
Starting point is 00:05:13 Two middle fingers to Boris Johnson. That really is hot gossip out of the press. Really hot gossip. So she had to sit there and watch the fucking Barbie movie with fucking Boris Johnson. It's like, I have to leave. I have to leave. Oh my God. and then he wrote about it my mum just sent me the link to it because I was interested but it's a Daily Mail article that
Starting point is 00:05:32 he's written about the Barbie movie I dread to think what it is where apparently in the article he describes Didcot as the center of the universe which is very generous I have to read this what the hell yeah life isn't real isn't that a weird thing the world's most empowering thing and someone that has like very much been involved with like my misery for the last few years is there it's like no no we've already got a villain of this film and my eye is deceiving me of mattel it's not you fuck off no wow it's just weird to think of him out and about at Didcot Cineworld that's really weird that's like my happy place which I hear that it might be demolished look what you've done this cinema is going to be demolished because of you it's just
Starting point is 00:06:18 a lie if you step foot in here we have to immediately demolish we have no choice but to incinerate we have to burn it to the ground we need like we need you've been in screen one that's my place holy holy place get out makes me sick but you've walked on those sacred carpets how bizarre disgusting oh i didn't think he was gonna get brought up i'm not gonna lie me neither but that's just the fun gossip that i heard five minutes ago do you want to hear my fun gossip it should actually we should say this is like not spoiler free like we're gonna be spoiling everything oh yeah don't watch this if you haven't seen the barbie movie you've seen it um yeah you know you probably know this but
Starting point is 00:06:56 you know the montage at the end the beautiful montage of all the women right yeah do you know what i'm about to say that ryan gosling's friend was in it or something like that like someone's friend was in it it's all the women who were like in the cast and crew no way yeah greta got like all of the all of the crew to like look through like any in a way in a way you were right um yeah how sweet because i saw an interview where the guy was like oh i know whatever who was in the montage that's what i mean yeah someone's friend isn't it well you obviously didn't finish the rest of the clip because then she goes on to say she's like no attention span i wouldn't know it goes she um she was like i've always wanted to do a film and like put in the credits like a film by and then like take up the whole screen by like listing every single name of every single person who worked on the film shivers but she was like
Starting point is 00:07:49 i wasn't allowed to do it so it felt really nice to like in the montage get people's like family cousins and like auntie it just is like all apparently it's all from the crew which is really sweet i literally love it did you cry in that bit um yeah i've cried a lot yeah or like i didn't but i did i don't know i was quite embarrassed to be crying because i think i had the monologue that we kind of were speaking about in either the last episode or the next episode yeah the feminism 101 episode we're not sure whether that's going to come before or after this but we just recorded it i had the monologue in my mind of like oh this is kind of feminism 101 whilst I was listening to America Ferrera's speech. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:08:30 But I couldn't stop crying for the reasons that we just spoke about in that episode about like, it's so important that this message is being brought to the masses, blah, blah, blah, in like a mainstream film. But I was really like, my mum was next to me. We bought a flask of tea. It was really quite Boris Johnson Tory moves to me we bought a flask of tea it was really quite um bootleg boris johnson tory moves us to bring that to um the deadcore cine world um not a tory must clarify um very strictly anti-tories um yeah it's like that whole first two minutes of us talking about boris is actually us fangirling don't know if you love him oh my god he's so cute and funny what wait outside he definitely didn't ruin everything i was like
Starting point is 00:09:11 my tears were falling out of my eyes and i was like really embarrassed about it for some reason because i could like i could see like my mom wasn't crying and like the woman next to me wasn't crying in the packed out cinema i was really embarrassed i was crying at it because it's all it is is just like close-ups of skin and like a mug but it's so beautiful oh my god i actually couldn't stop crying it was so pure and i think that's why i love the the feminism 101 aspect of it like we've heard this speech before like it's not um necessarily groundbreaking but then at the end of the speech in my cinema someone shouted amen and it's like look the middle-aged women are loving this they love it later up they love it it's the first time they've ever heard it so they're gobsmacked it's the first bit representation of um that sort of
Starting point is 00:09:56 brand of feminism that they've seen like their husband's next to them and he's hearing it and it's like they're happy oh and boris johnson's there like oh dear i cried at the bit where it's like beginning middle where she sits down at the bus stop with the old woman oh god that's a bit teary like an old woman oh and she's like you're so beautiful and the old woman's like i know it oh interesting fun fact actually another fun fact from grutterland that i don't know who it was but the the men in in suits the men in suits wanted to cut that scene from the film because all the things just to cut just i guess for time of like it's just a bit fleshy like it doesn't go anywhere like it's just this kind of little cold but it's like one of the best gags in the whole thing and greta was like if you take that away
Starting point is 00:10:45 you take away the heart of the film like that scene is there to be the heart like it doesn't serve a plot purpose but it serves like a emotional it's huge it's absolutely huge yeah also because then the final montage of like and also like the close-up of like margot robbie's skin and there are like pores on her skin and stuff and like freckles and stuff it would make no sense yeah without that bit yeah because you need to see that she has never seen an old person before with like a real skin and like who's lived a fucking life like you need to see that i do think the whole barbie movie for me it feeds into my thing of like know when to push and like let yourself enjoy things even if even if not all of it is 100 made for you or like mind blowing maybe your mind
Starting point is 00:11:32 doesn't need to be blown maybe your mind needs to be entertained maybe you need to be like six years old and playing with barbie and not worrying about how it's going to impact your body image or your idea of beauty standards or any of that and you're just a child playing yeah like i loved the beginning bit where it was like barbie's offered women the first opportunity to not play as mothers yeah like caregivers but to play as like a woman woman with like her own like property and like a car and clothes and a boyfriend like it's like that is really revolutionary we know the fucking history of barbie there are loads of problems with it but i do love that angle of like look we're not they're not pushing a pram around and playing with a play kitchen they're not playing as fucking women
Starting point is 00:12:15 mothers they're playing as like grown women it's so cool going into it i was really intrigued of like i wonder how because i feel like the marketing was very obviously barbie it was like too much it was relishing in the barbie-ness of barbie world it was barbie this barbie that and i was like i wonder how greta and margot robbie are gonna play this i wonder how you produce a film about barbie and release it in 2023 like i didn't know as greta gerwig how do you exactly how are you doing that and what angle are you taking and as soon as at the beginning they say um and all problems of feminism and equality were solved thanks to barbie or whatever i i laughed and i
Starting point is 00:12:56 was like okay i'm in safe hands like it's fine this is how we're doing it yeah it's funny it's satirical and it's aware and it's intelligent and it's compassionate and it's complex and it's all of the things at once i definitely agree with you that i had like um reservations going in like i was definitely quite scared like the marketing campaign i'm always really skeptical skeptical of a movie that has like a has put like a lot of budget into a marketing campaign because it gives me a don't worry darling vibe of like you blew your budget on marketing and then the film was they spent more on the marketing than the film apparently yeah and it doesn't surprise me that really doesn't surprise me like the marketing was insane for this film so i was quite like oh god i don't know what
Starting point is 00:13:38 i think but the and i probably wouldn't to be honest i had no interest of seeing it like the trailer didn't hook me and the marketing does nothing for me i don't particularly need to see jewel leaper and load of people as fucking barbies like that doesn't particularly interest me the thing that i was trusting in i was trusting it trusting in greta gerwig and i'm being like it's interesting to me that she would choose that to do because it is it seems to conflict with so much about her that i'm so intrigued that she's chosen that and that was the thing that i was like right i have to see this and i just think she just did it so stunningly and like carefully and like you can tell a lot has gone into this i want to talk about the cast as
Starting point is 00:14:17 well yeah let's do it like i know that's kind of skipping like the main no this can be whatever we want it to be about the cast yeah so interesting to me that so many british quite niche british actors were used three people from sex education yeah jamie dimitri from stafflets flats who's like fucking channel 4 king rob bryden like weird british comedy actors it's like why are you using these people like you must be such a fan you must have watched sex education and been like I've got a I'll take the lot yeah like I need these people in my film are you guys around next week also to say like one line like that was what was so funny about casting Jamie Dimitri he would jamie dimitri if you don't know who that is is the guy in fleabag with like the long teeth that's where he might move he also does a show
Starting point is 00:15:11 called stuff lets flats which is amazing so fucking funny you should 100 watch it it's so good and he um is playing one of the like mattel men just in a suit and i think he says about two lines yeah he literally says like i got shot are there weapons yeah it's like nothing but to cast jamie dimitri is so specific like you must have seen staff let's flats you must simply like you're going you you've cast this such specific british comedy actor and then you get him to say like one line it's so specific because and like michael cera it's like you've cast him and he literally is the best part of the film but he says two lines it's like i don't understand i think what really the logic was
Starting point is 00:15:54 margot robbie used to live in clapham with her husband who's british and they run the production in harry potter i've heard yeah he was i think it was just an extra pushed by drake yeah um but they running their production company i think were quite intentional in like picking people who they liked i do think the choices of the barbies was really perfectly done i'm not gonna lie like yeah there's not much here for me i really went i really feel like i came out of barbie like taking it for exactly what it was the more i've watched it the more almost i said to you like i texted you the next day and i was like after watching it a second time you were like do you like it did you enjoy it more or less like the second time around and i was like i feel like i enjoyed it more because i knew what i was going into yeah and i could just be excited for like
Starting point is 00:16:42 taking it for what it was and like enjoying the fun of it and like letting the sad parts here and like letting every aspect of it just be what it is and not trying to like mold it into something else or like you can't mold it into anything because she's perfectly molded it's perfect like it is very she's very sure in what it is and you can tell and it and like there are huge moments in it where you can see mattel's grubby little fingers on it like you can definitely tell which parts were literally like they almost had a clause like we need that line and we need that and that can't happen and like you can see it but like i can see greta's like confidence in it like
Starting point is 00:17:22 it's so skilled how she's done it that i almost just think that i'm you cannot um shape into anything else because she has literally shaped it and shaped and shaped it and it it tells you what it is time and time again i think as well being able to go into it without the fear of like what is this gonna be yeah like was really comfortable because i think probably for a lot i think for a lot of girls going into it there's like this idea of like are you for me like are you are you fucking me over i don't want you to like what are you gonna say to me like do you know like are you gonna be there for me you're gonna tell me that barbies are empowering with a straight face how like how are you gonna do that
Starting point is 00:17:59 yeah and i think it played into the idea of like i think it is under i think it's an underdeveloped narrative or even like a lazy narrative to push that barbie is simply bad for girls and i think greta i think that the whole way that the film was done in like balancing the nuance of it is literally so fun as a film to be made yeah and that is fresh like as much as there are so many stale but not even stale quite like remedial ideas of like feminism in the film i do feel like the idea of being like barbie and dolls and that world and like with huge like wizard of ores influences like blah blah blah there's so like there is so much depth to that film if you want to look at it that you could 100% write a huge dissertation on that film oh my god and people will that will be the main dissertation of next year i'm telling you the
Starting point is 00:18:54 halloween costumes and dissertations oh my headphones fell out sorry what'd you say i just said i'm looking forward to the halloween costumes and dissertations on barbie the hell so okay so if you had to do a halloween costume from Barbie, what are you doing? Just a Barbie? That would be fun. Oh my god, we could be podcaster Barbie. We could do, um, what's her name? Kate McKinnon? Yeah, weird Barbie. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:19:16 Did you know she was a roommate of Margot Robbie? I did. No, Greta Gerwig. Yeah, I did. Can we talk about Ryan Gosling? With pleasure. What are your thoughts because i know you've never been into ryan gosling correct it's not that i've never been into him like i liked him in the notebook sort of thing like he's not one of my main guys like he's not like okay like ryan gosling's and i need to see it i think he's attractive okay i'm still not like wowed by
Starting point is 00:19:41 him like i i don't i didn't come out of that thinking god ryan gosling's so great i i think like he he played ken well he can dwell it was fun i loved the song so fucking much there was one bit this is what my main one of my main things is with ryan gosling there's one bit that fucking flopped for me so hard and i know this was his improvisation when he walked behind the thing and he shouted sublime that literally got a lot of love like tumbleweed tumbleweed in my cinema why don't you like sublime i just thought it i just literally thought it just didn't hit as a joke i just thought it wasn't funny like it was one of the things where i almost cringed oh that's bad like almost like someone trying to do a joke and it was like oh but everyone loves it clearly yeah it's a well-received moment i think
Starting point is 00:20:30 the best moment of the film for me like a hundred times over i could watch it all i could literally watch it on a loop from the minute i wake up to the minute i go to bed which is a bizarre thing for me to pick this shot but the shot of him coming up the like escalator and looking at the screen of like bill clinton a mini fridge a horse beer yeah and it's like all the men on money and like just the little montage of men and him like kind of laughing like oh my god like patriarchy like so happy he's like oh my god he's like getting euphoric over learning about realizing it's like oh my god i have it all yeah he's like like this is made for me men are on money like what this is amazing i just love that so much i do i completely agree i think that was like that
Starting point is 00:21:19 whole idea was like the best bit of the film really the whole um ken's realization that it's like oh the real world is made for you yeah and how anxious did you feel when that started taking over barbie land it's horrible i started to actually feel so anxious of like get your stuff out get the fucking shoes off the wall now i felt sick but then it's like oh my god that's where we live yeah it's like i actually felt sick like i live there you're intruding in the space like this is making me feel ill but then it's like look around oh fuck that's how anxious you feel at like what it could be being tainted and it's like no times that by a hundred that's what you're in
Starting point is 00:21:58 wendy's small frosty is the ultimate summer refreshment. And not because it's cool and creamy and made with fresh Canadian dairy. It's also refreshingly cheap. Just 99 cents until July 14th. It's a treat for you and your wallet. ACAST powers the world's best podcasts. Here's a show that we recommend. Nature. I've got a gay rooster named Francois. Is so

ACAST helps creators launch, grow, and monetize their podcasts everywhere. A-Cast.com I think they just played it so well. Yeah. It just really landed for me.
Starting point is 00:23:16 Like, it really landed for me as a film. I thought it was really nice and sweet and funny. And it's nice to have something a bit light for girls yeah it's light but it also is um dark yeah like it's political it is a political film like like with all the stuff of all these bad reviews of from men like going fucking viral or whatever like it's men hating blah blah blah it's like no this is a political film and that's why i do that's why it landed for me as well like the fun bits if anything it's like i almost feel like they're her kind of scamming people into like listening to the messaging like i almost wasn't really having i love to see all the stars in lovely dresses and all the stuff oh my god the big opening it oh la la i love it but the stuff i liked the stuff that actually hit was
Starting point is 00:24:06 like um the montage kind of in the real world where she's like skating through and i was like you're right darling she's like oh god and he's like i love it i feel like everyone's looking at me like i'm one of them and she's like i feel like there's an undertone of violence in mine yeah oh like there's a building site there'll be loads of women over there we need that good feminine energy yeah i just i love things like that because it's almost like i felt like she was almost tricking people into like almost tricking the men into who have been like forced there with their wives to laugh at their own expense that's why i love like an opening number from lizzo singing pink pee like let's have the best day like woohoo when i wake up everyone's having so much fun sliding down the slide like in a sparkly day like everything's
Starting point is 00:24:51 shiny and pink and just like sickeningly yeah sickeningly barbie do you know what i mean like almost she didn't skirt around any of the barbiness barbiness she didn't skirt around any of the shittiness either i feel like i feel like she really balanced the tone really nicely yeah i agree it was like i don't know if to me i would say it was particularly comedic like i don't know like i think a lot of people found it like very funny i don't think i don't think the comedy was up there and that's why i kind of think it... I don't think the comedy was up there. And that's why I kind of find it funny that she cast so many comedy actors, but then kind of got them to do nothing.
Starting point is 00:25:31 The only one... Like, Ryan Gosling, hands down, the funniest. Like, hands down. Oh, no, Michael Cera. What about Mitch? Pardon me. Michael Cera, Ryan Gosling, so funny. But, like, to cast kind of, like, Will Ferrell, and all you've kind of got him doing is like kind
Starting point is 00:25:47 of screaming and like roller skating it's like look or like jamie dimitri my king you've got the cast of sex education in there like you've got all these people in there midge like you've got do you know who you've got there you've got emerald vanell or whatever her name is and you have literally got her to just stand but i thought that was hilarious yeah like oh I thought in the way Will Ferrell like is walking around he's like oh Midge I thought we just continued you like that is so fucking funny yeah that is funny yeah no I agree actually that bit was so good what was the point in Michael Cera's character like definitely the like doing so much doing the. I think also kind of nice to have like a bit of a, like this isn't a guy who has been raised with the ideas of like what Ken needs to be in the same way.
Starting point is 00:26:36 Like. Yeah, yeah. I loved his like doting-ness on Ken. Same. I also loved the bit when he was like all of in sync yeah even that one it's like that is so good yeah but also there there were so many moments actually where i thought i don't know how old gretta gerwig is and it was actually written with her husband as well but there were so many moments where you could kind of see her age come through of like
Starting point is 00:27:02 the and i do think because when i left the cinema me and my mom were talking about like who was that for like what generation is that for like who is that film for and i was like i think it's for your generation like i think it's for middle aged women and there were certain moments where i think look it is for people of all generations yeah but there were kids in the cinema and most of that was over their heads yeah no fucking idea they don't relate to cellulite in the way that women do which i don't know if i loved it but there were so many bits like for example using in sync as the reference look come on who's that for it's definitely not
Starting point is 00:27:37 for our generation that quote and there was also a bit that got a huge laugh in my cinema my cinema mine and boris johnson's did yeah um where she was like and we just sit down and like you watch pride and prejudice the bbc version all weekend we binge watch it and it's like that isn't necessarily relatable love that series so much like colin firth my king but that is a reference for middle-aged women in every way like it's not talking about the hand moment in the film like like all the kind of it's not the most uh relatable romantic quote romantic reference so i do think there but i think were so many moments where i thought this is for an older generation like the primary audience is older women i think the primary audience i think it balances every audience there definitely are with i think the cast youth euthanizes it yeah it kills it yeah
Starting point is 00:28:34 i think the cast does but i think largely like there's i think there's intentionally placed like in sync and like there are just so many different references I think to so many different generations I think it would land in a different way with every audience yeah which is why I get the frustration of like it wasn't for me the perfect feminist 21 year old or whatever which is fine it is for you it's just not all for you you have to share but also that's why the um i think it's quite cool that the feminism 101 like for example highly critiqued america ferrara's speech at the end we've heard it before but it's that that's why it's important it's like yeah we have heard it before but i do think that's why i think it's primary like i think she's targeted a
Starting point is 00:29:23 large amount of it towards an older generation of women because i do think their media that they grew up on was like starved of that um that kind of monologue even though we've heard it a million times before in much i would say much better ways i.e kind of the cool girl gone girl monologue things like that but i do think she targeted it at an older generation in so many ways and then kind of snuck in references that they would understand but then marketed it towards young people made that kind of put enough of the people they like in it enough of the jokes and that they would get but i do also think the final messaging hits hardest if you're hearing
Starting point is 00:30:02 that for the first time definitely but i think as well like i know so many people who are around our age who would find america's speech revolutionary yeah no that they'd know that a hundred percent are a hundred percent which is that's why it is important like and i was crying through the speech like it's a stunning speech she delivers it really well she delivers it so it's stunning it is undeniably stunning i do also see the frustration of like if if i'm thinking you're doing something so smart the whole way through and then you offer me it sticks out you offer me like pittance yeah yeah so i'm starving i'm starving yeah i'm still hungry for more you're offering me cellulite it's
Starting point is 00:30:46 like oh god okay um fun fun fact for the keen viewer that you probably know this the girls you know sasha and her mates when she comes into the school i know the brats girls although i was saying this to my boyfriend the other day i was like i find it intriguing so the girl like the daughter the character her name is sasha yeah right yeah yeah and in her mates there's like a blonde one like there's they match all of the brats the key for yeah but in order to make the main girl in barbie called brat called sasha and the mom calls her bunny boo boo which was sasha's nickname really yeah when she gets in the car she's like hey bunny boo boo and oh my god and sasha's like don't call me that and
Starting point is 00:31:31 she's like sorry it's like okay so you're really you're giving a nice big nod to brats that's lovely but in the process i think you have whitewashed sasha well because i don't i was kind of thinking this but then i was thinking i didn't really know brats that well but then i was thinking what were their ethnicities like there was yasmin as well was yasmin black no yasmin was almost like for the latina girls for the middle eastern girls like for the kind of mixed so was sasha supposed to be black sasha was the black brat style i mean and then you have chloe and jay so i thought that was just weird it's almost like there was nothing stopping you from calling sasha's character yasmin well that's kind of what i was thinking because it's almost like i kind of thought maybe yasmin was the black one
Starting point is 00:32:12 and um sasha was the kind of latina one no i just think weird that's really i don't know if it's a miscite or just like they just wanted to call her sasha and like or they wanted to honor it in a specific way but i just thought it was weird to lay out the brats girls and get it table and and swap two of their names but it's almost like look they're they i know i don't really know but they're pretty iconic it's almost like here's the cast of scooby-doo but fred looks a bit like shaggy and shaggy yeah we're gonna mix up Yeah, we're going to mix up Daphne and Velma. And the added kind of political layer of one of them's black. I do find it bizarre. That's really weird, actually.
Starting point is 00:32:51 I know. What a weird move. Because that's almost like that must be a mistake. But you can't make a mistake at that level. Like literally mis-naming one of your characters. Because there'd be no difference if she just changed the name. One of my friends was like, it could be like a safety kind of measure in like a marketing sense of like you can't step on the brand yeah if you're if you're coming from mattel you can't be hasbro or whoever
Starting point is 00:33:13 did bob um brats i don't know but like you can't can you honor brats like that in a barbie film but it's like but you are you are because you said bunny boo boo and sasha so you may as well have what's like don't do it yeah i just going to do it. Yeah, I just find it bizarre. I don't know if someone can, like, correct me on that, but also... Yeah, I'd love to know why, because that obviously seems pretty dumb. Which is weird. And all of a sudden it's like, look, I trust Greta not to do that. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:33:36 So why has she done that? Yeah, it's like, almost if you're going to do it, don't half-arse it. Come here. Well, it's like, surely you have Googled Bratz, Bratz names, and you've seen their names. come here was i mean surely you have googled brats brats names you know which is which you if you're writing the movie on on barbie and you're putting brats in it you know i've got them actually on that little t-shirt over there maybe i'll just refresh my memory on the brats yeah i don't actually i don't know which one's which that's crazy i know i always loved jade yeah she had dark hair yeah exactly a little fringe And a little fringe. Yeah. Bratz.
Starting point is 00:34:08 Like, I just almost think Sasha is so meaningful as, like, one of the biggest black Barbie-style dolls. God, that's really weird, actually. Yeah, like, I just almost think Sasha is such a, not, like, icon, but Sasha is such a marker. No, it is iconic, though. Yeah. And, like, so meaningful to so many girls. I just thought it was weird to call the character
Starting point is 00:34:25 sasha and i don't know i actually don't know maybe she is black but i don't think they were supposed to be presented as a black family no because america ferreira did i watched some kind of interview where america ferreira was talking about like how cool it was that greta wrote it we're on first name term me and greta yeah um wrote it as um like such a latina like like kind of a fun stereotypic or latina family so i feel like that's really bizarre oh that that is really weird actually like almost like what is that move i don't know bizarre it's like an unsatisfying nod do you know what i mean it's almost like don't make it a nod like the whole thing is like oh easter egg but it's like but you've got it wrong is that you thought you're being really smart but
Starting point is 00:35:08 you're actually being a bit dumb so was that a choice i just don't know anyway odd that was nice anything else about the movie any other little easter eggs i just loved it and i will allegedly be watching it from my laptop until i can source it on my tv legally allegedly hypothetically i actually don't know i'm not feeling a massive draw to watch it again like i really enjoyed it for what it was i find it so intriguing as part of gretta gerwig's like filmography i find that such a cool mood from her really interesting all the stuff love the cast i think fondly of everyone in it now oh the costumes the set just the design of this whole film is like i need to be there but i i agree i almost would love um a poster of it but i don't know if i need to i don't know if i don't know if i need to sit through the whole thing again oh i i definitely definitely do
Starting point is 00:36:03 yeah the more the merrier for me personally. I just find it very fun. Like I love the dance. The Ken dance or the... Oh, I love it all. Oh, the girls. Yeah, I love the girls and the boys and just I love everyone. I think I preferred the boys sort of musical number.
Starting point is 00:36:19 I thought that was so hilarious. That was so great. But I just love it for like, I love the the jewelipa dance for like it's like a planned choreography with a bespoke song big yeah that is an important part of life is like having fun fucking dancing looking good being silly yeah and then it's like you've got the dad at home just having a laugh on duolingo it's like you it really is the balance of like we encourage men to learn throughout their whole lives and women are supposed to just be done and become for example mothers and just be static
Starting point is 00:36:58 from the age of like 25 on yeah it's just really like you can explore you can be silly like yeah do you know one of the best bits i actually think one of the bits that hits the best um at the very end when i think it is um sasha that says the the kind of fucked up sasha comes in and she's like well what is barbie's ending and um and someone's like oh well she falls in love with ken yeah and she's like well what is barbie's ending and um and someone's like oh well she falls in love with ken yeah and she's like but i don't love ken yeah and i just think that is so satisfying like that one line and it immediately flips something that is like would have felt unsatisfying like if that was never addressed the fact that ken and her are obviously not meant to be together and he is just ken just her accessory yeah that would have felt really
Starting point is 00:37:45 unsatisfying but the fact that it's like but i don't love ken it's like no i love the fact that it doesn't end in a romantic thing and it's not oh she doesn't love ken but she actually loves fucking will ferrell whatever it's like no she actually doesn't love anyone she's just here trying to learn about herself yeah and being a woman i love that so much i love it i love it i want it every day i just want to enjoy that i don't want it every day i don't want it every day but i really think it's a great film yeah so good gorgeous stunning well i hope you enjoyed barbie and i hope you enjoyed me too i feel like i didn't say anything you haven't seen barbie yeah we've ruined the whole thing yeah i would recommend watching it
Starting point is 00:38:27 tracking it down i i allegedly know hypothetically there are links with which you can find it on the internet probably who's to say maybe me you wouldn't steal a handbag you wouldn't steal a car but you might still love a movie is put locker still a thing no no let's go on one two three movies recently died and soap today recently died as well i know we're losing the fault was something about a monkey or a chimp or something there was one like weed video and stuff like yeah i think i had one that was like movie chimp or something like that movie monkey i don So sad. Yeah, really sad. Those were great to watch. Orange Wednesdays. Maybe, yeah.
Starting point is 00:39:08 If you don't hear from us, assume the worst. Wendy's Small Frosty is the ultimate summer refreshment. We'll see you next time.
