Green Light with Chris Long - Eagles Suffer First Loss vs Denver Broncos | Chris Long Reactions
Episode Date: October 6, 2025The Philadelphia Eagles suffer their first loss at the hands of the Denver Broncos (and possibly the referees). Leading 17-3, the Broncos scored 18 unanswered and held off the Eagles on their potentia...l game winning drive to leave Philly above .500 on the season. Jalen Hurts, DeVonta Smith and AJ Brown looked to be on the same page in the first half but couldn't get Saquon Barkley going in the second half to hold on for the victory. Welcome to, this is going to be mainly the Eagles.
We're going to talk about the Eagles and the Broncos.
Pretty much the only good game in the 1 p.m. slate.
Sorry if I forgot any of the other games that you were interested in.
I'm in the middle of watching a really good ballgame between,
probably the best ball game of the day between Tampa and Seattle.
I mean, this game is fucking, it's bananas.
Like these quarterbacks, these pass catchers,
the physicality down the goal line there.
But I love the birds, right?
I got to do this.
I got to do this thing for y'all.
And then I'm going to skate back and watch the rest of these games.
First off, shout out to Hugh Douglas's cannabis company.
Hugh Douglas is my dog.
Love that dude.
He was always a big fan.
Reached out.
Told me I need to try some product when I get up to the Philly area.
And I will.
But for now, a T-shirt will do.
All right. How do I break this game down knowing that there's like probably if there's 10 people in this chat there's seven to nine Eagles fans and like one Broncos fan?
Sorry to Cowboy Reed, my producer who's a Broncos fan. I will start by addressing the elephant in the room, which is the DPI, which was not called on the four yard line.
That game probably should have came down to one play at the four yard line for the game. And it didn't. And you know, that's a shame.
It is a shame. Like I'm with you. But what I'm not going to do is I'm not going to sit here for however long I'm doing this live video and make it about the refs.
You know, there were other calls in the game. Like I know the Eagles probably don't like the intentional grounding being picked up. I don't love it either.
I think the league has to be a little bit more specific as to what is grounding. Like what constitutes being in the ball being in the vicinity of and here's the explanation. Okay. I got like three fucking.
laptops here. Okay, question. The grounding on Bo Necks, why was that flag picked up on the field,
Adrian Hill? So what happened there, we have an O2O. That's our official to official communication.
O2O. Just fucking say the refs talked. My O2O was not working. Grounding is a teamwork foul.
I had intentional grounding. The line judge had that there was a receiver in the area 28,
but I didn't hear the information over O2O, so I threw the flag. The line judge came in and let me
know that 28 was indeed in the area.
And that's why we picked up the flag.
28, not Troutman?
That's interesting.
Because, you know, like, from the end zone view, didn't we think it was Troutman
that was in the area?
You know, I think there's a couple of things going on right here.
I think there's a couple of things going on right here with the call.
And the only reason I'm diving into this to start, some people are going to say you're not
giving the Broncos.
Broncos won that game fair and square.
I'm not shocked they won the game either.
I didn't give them out, but the Broncos were going to be probably among the Eagles' toughest tests in this young season.
I mean, like, listen, and that's funny to say because so far the Eagles have beaten Prescott, Stafford, you know, they beat Baker.
They beat Mahomes, and they couldn't beat Bo Nix.
I do think Denver's, if that game's played again, I think it's a good ball game the second time as well.
well. So I'm not, I'm certainly not making an excuse for the Eagles. What I'm trying to do is, like,
educate people on what I have found in doing a little quick Googling after the game. And I had read
some, hey, you're not supposed to, you're not supposed to go to replay. Like, they literally
updated the, the language around that thing this year that, like, if you go to replay on
intentional grounding, it can only have to do with, like, the tackle box and that sort of thing,
not a receiver being in the vicinity. Um, however, they didn't really go to replay. It was kind of like,
And you see it all the time when there's a grounding flag.
Sometimes it comes out late.
They discuss it.
Adrian Hill talked about it.
It's a team call.
So I hate the DPI at the end of the game.
You know, the intentional grounding is unfortunate if you're the Eagles,
but I could see that going both ways.
I've seen, you know, grounding flags being picked up before.
You know, certainly I'm sure the Eagles got a call in there somewhere.
I thought maybe the pick play that almost.
knocked the Broncos out of field goal range was pretty questionable um but the eagles got the short end
the you know the shaft today dude they they they got the short end of the stick they got shafted
i kind of mixed two um two sayings together there uh i'm not going to do the eagles law the refs lost
the eagles the game thing i'm just not going to do it because you know when you play with fire for
fucking five weeks eventually you get burnt and you know this game could end up mattering when it
comes down to the playoffs and that sort of thing.
But the truth of the matter is not a division game.
It's not a conference game.
It could be worse.
And this team hasn't lost in 371 days with Jalen Hertz finishing a game.
Obviously, the exception to that is, I guess, the commander's game where Louvo put him out
of the game.
And they end up losing that game was kind of a freak finish where the commanders turn the
ball over like five times.
the point being the Eagles have been winning and winning and winning and winning and they're four and one
if it were about the result we'd all be really fucking excited but it's not about the result it's
about the way the team looks and had the team won that game on a last second play at the four-yard line
we'd still be talking about the same things would we not I'm pretty sure Eagles Twitter would
still be look like a you know a murder scene it is uh it's it's it's it's it's
It's hot right now.
And it should be.
It should be.
Because, I mean, like, you're telling me, and you don't want to do this after a win.
That's why I don't do it after wins.
But like sometimes, and this is reflective in the way that a team can improve sometimes after a loss.
Right.
Like, I'm being the analyst here, but I'm sure the coaches are the same way.
Where it's like, you know, I can only drag my team down so much after win.
Sometimes you need a loss to wake the fuck up.
And there are things going on in that building.
There are things going on in every NFL building, right?
It's a big market.
This is a defending Super Bowl team.
You know, there are going to be bumps in the road.
Last year you had the bumps in the road.
Remember Brandon Graham got on, you know, on NBC, Philadelphia or whatever it was.
Or had like a, you know, he had one of those like where you go to a bar and you do a radio show on Monday.
And he let something slip about family business.
and you know, it ended up actually causing them to do the hard work and get over it, right?
And they end up winning a Super Bowl.
It is going to be, it's going to be three, four days until they play football again.
Like they don't have that kind of time right now.
Here's the things that I thought were disappointing.
To me, the thing that was disappointing was the Eagles had a lead and couldn't close the game out.
And, you know, we saw that last week, right?
like the bucks end up losing baker throws that back breaking interception they didn't get burnt for it they
got burnt for it here um you know and and and that's what's disappointing is a team that a calendar
year ago was like you know they were like a bulldozer they've got a lead they've got sequin barclay i know
there are guys down inside certainly landon dickerson being down really affects things certainly
mackay beckton not being there anymore affects things i don't think cam jurgans
has been healthy since the Super Bowl.
But I also watched like the Minnesota Vikings.
Now they beat the Browns, but they beat the Browns defense.
I watched the Minnesota Vikings this morning with Justin's school bus at Wright
Tackle, and they're playing, you know, a really scary defense led by Miles Garrett and
with Carson Wentz, and they find a way to win the game.
You know, they find a way to string together offensive drives.
when you watch that play caller call plays, you're like, yep, he's an artist.
Like, he knows what he's doing, the creativity, the whole thing.
The thing that's confounding to me is those two, three possessions at the turn between
the third and the fourth quarter where the Eagles, you know, they barely call a run play.
I think they like combine three minutes of clock on those possessions.
It was crazy.
I mean, I don't have the numbers.
I don't need the numbers.
You all saw it too.
You know, I think in the second half, they ran like 25 plays and they ran one one true design run play.
It was like fucking crazy, dude.
Like, like, and I know, hey, listen, I like the RPO's.
If they'd have found a way to bleed more clock, when's, win this game, you'd say, okay, the RPO's are an answer, right?
Like, maybe the RPO's are an answer.
They got a lot of mileage out of that today.
Saquan not getting the ball more than six times is it's sacrilege.
And I know you got a lot of mouse to feed and everybody's got a Twitter account, but like, you know, you've got to give them the ball.
And I understand it's not going to be as easy.
It's going to be a little bit more like, you know, uphill sledding type thing with the interior offensive line the way it is.
But you've got to run the fucking ball.
You got to find a way to run the ball.
You know, and that to me is a scheme problem as well.
I didn't think it was all bad from Petulo.
You know, and part of it for me is in Denver coming out and playing.
in so much single high.
Like, there is going to be a little bit of a pivot from the run game and that sort of thing.
I thought Vance Joseph took way too long to catch the bus in this game where, like,
if you're the Eagles, you kind of want to see a bunch of man coverage, right?
Like, we saw what Indy did to Denver in man coverage?
Like, what's to make you think that fucking Jalen Hertz and A.J. Brown and Smitty and Goddard
and these guys and Sequin?
on great call on the wheel route for the touchdown.
You know, they could have had six, seven explosive plays.
They failed to execute on some of them.
AJ Brown kind of quit on the route or whatever it was.
Like, I'm not here like trying to sew division or do some drama ship.
But like, you know, unfortunately, if everybody's looking at you and the ball's slightly
overthrown and you change speeds a little bit, like people are going to talk about it.
And so, you know, there were just so many opportunities for.
this team to close the game out and they didn't um but i will say this from from denver's point of
view i you know warren buffett quote nolan gave me this quote earlier because he heard me
yelling at the tv all day was like warren buffett it's good to learn from your mistakes it's better
to learn from other people's mistakes and sean payton learned from other i knew sean didn't need to
look at the tape last week to see josh grisard grisard i still haven't figured out how to say his name
offensive coordinator.
It's called a pretty good game today.
But our boy Josh Grisard from Lizard,
Lick, North Carolina targeted fucking Quinyon Mitchell
and Cooper DeGine 18 times in a game like that.
Like, Keeley Ringo is out there, brother.
And he was still out there this week,
and Sean Payton found him. And he found him early and often.
They target him seven times in the game.
It felt like 75 times.
including like that two point conversion which the minute they came up to to the line of scrimmage
and they were going for two i was like man he must have a play he really loves and it just turned
out to be a man beer he was like where was keely wringo i'm going to find him we're going for two
why would we not um you know the illegal shift from sequin also i just saw that was huge you know
i i don't know if that's a bad call i didn't look back and see it i assumed it was the right call
The other penalty I want to talk about is the Zach Bond penalty.
Having said everything I said, the ball should be at the four-yard line.
You should have one chance to take a shot and win that game.
The Zach Bond penalty was a penalty.
I know some of y'all don't want to hear it.
You're going to call me names and shit.
Like, I'm sorry.
It was.
And it didn't take a replay for me to see it.
We were sitting in here.
What did I say, guys?
I said, fuck.
That's Zach Bond.
They got Zach.
I'm telling you.
I've been around the ball a lot more than you have.
And I hate, I'm not trying to Ryan Clarkie here.
I just, like, that's a penalty.
It's a no-no.
He would tell you that.
You can't burp guys.
They just don't let you do it anymore.
It's just, especially if you're not in traffic,
it's pretty clear to see the guy's knees down.
I know that like he's fighting for extra yardage,
but he's two yards short of the stick or sticks or whatever it is.
Like, and he dumps them on his head.
Like, to me, that's a penalty.
You know, this football season, Bet MGM wants to give you another chance at first touchdown
scores with BetMGM's second chance promotion.
You'll get your stake back in cash if your first touchdown scores second instead.
Bet on any pro football player to score the first touchdown of the game.
If you're right, you win, which is my favorite part of the ad read.
If you're right, you win.
If your player scores second, you get your stake back in cash.
Be sure to take advantage of this offer.
and if you haven't signed up for betmgm yet use bonus code greenlight and you will get up to a
$1,500 first bet offer on your first wager with betmgm betmgm make it legendary going back to sean
paidon i thought targeting wringo was was a good look um eagle's only 15 pressures
that's no good he schemed up a lot of shots like again bo necks missed a lot of shots against the
chargers a couple weeks ago he missed a ton of shots to
in the first half. I mean, if it weren't for Bo Nix, I think the Broncos, you know, they'd be up in the
first half in this game. So Bo Nix kind of masked some of the problems, right? Like,
he had the Sherfield miss. He had the Franklin miss. One of those is probably a touchdown.
And then third and five before the half, he throws the ball to Delaware, like out of bounds.
Like, it was terrible. So Bo Nix has to play better. And he did as the game went on.
But he didn't even play that well. And they just let these guys hang in.
They just let these guys hang in.
They had a big Ingram drive.
Ingram hadn't really been targeted a lot this year.
There was a big drive.
That was a huge third and 14.
After the pick play call, which is the one thing the Broncos fans probably said,
well, that was that call didn't go our way.
But it didn't end up hurting them.
And, you know, obviously I talked about Ringo, targeting Ringo early in the game,
late in the game, you know, Sutton with the game on the line.
And Quinyon's a fantastic player.
We've talked at length about how great he is.
Sometimes you get the bear.
sometimes the bear gets you and you know talked about you know sutton being a very unique
challenge for a quinyon who who kind of hangs his hat on physicality he plays the you know
to the letter of the law like with the with the dPI he's really good at playing tight coverage
without interfering well corlin sutton's just a big physical cat and he was able to win some balls
late in the game and you know that's what he gets paid to those guys get paid too every week's
not going to look like last week for Quignan.
So I don't see anything wrong with the defense other than the past rush.
And we already knew the past rush is going to be a little bit of a squeaky wheel.
How do they grease that?
I don't know.
Maybe it has something to do with when Nacobi Dean gets back, making Zach Bond more of a rusher in some situations.
I don't know, though.
It sounds good.
But do you really think Zach Bond's going to be able to get you like consistent pressure lined up on the edge?
There's a difference between consistent pressure lined up on the edge.
and you know an offball linebacker pressure which he's great at he really is i know he has some
some pass rush in his background but um so defensively that to me is like we got the same problems
we thought we had you know coming in the season which is who the fuck's going to be corner number
three right who's going to be the guy um that when you kick to jean inside he's got to hold down the
fort outside and who are the edge rushers and they really haven't neither thing has worked itself out
although Ojolari played well today.
For Denver, man, Denver's got to feel good about this win.
I thought their quarterback played piss poor through half of the game.
You know, and he found a way to win.
He found a way to win.
And, you know, like, I don't think he's the perfect player.
I mean, Cowboy reads in here.
And at one point in the game, I'm like, hey, this guy sucks, doesn't he, Cowboy?
Like, you guys have a shitty quarterback.
I didn't mean that.
Like, I'm just giving him shit.
But sometimes he plays like that.
But the one thing that this group has in Denver is like,
they feel like they're all on the same page you know whenever you hear guys talk about bone
necks they really like him they you know they got a lot of respect for him that his teammates love him
sean loves him and uh you know he's got to make those throws he's been missing but all things
considered to be three and two and to have beaten the defending champions in philly haven't lost
since jesus was a baby at home i mean it's it's uh it's a big win even if it's marred by the
refs a little bit and like people are going to be like yeah well the refs well get
your shit together and you won't be in these situations because i can guarantee you
fucking nick syriani's not standing up there in front of the team on monday and saying we got robbed
he's saying we got to play better jordan milada who commented this week on the fact that like we've
done away with victory mondays like why do you think that is because the team's not playing well
so you know you can blame it on the refs all you want but the team has to play better
And if you want to go where you want to go, like you can't play with fire every week because that doesn't really hold up over a three, four game playoff.
You know, the potential to be like the Monstars any given Sunday doesn't mean shit.
If you can't be the Monstars three, four weeks in a row because that's what it takes to win the title.
That's what they did last year.
Now, the one thing I want to give Van Joseph a lot of credit for and I thought in the second half he caught up is it was the same pressures.
It's exactly what we talked about this week.
And by sim pressure, what we mean is when oftentimes you give a blitz look, right,
and you get a defensive lineman dropping into coverage,
and you get a blitzer off the edge or up the middle,
and it essentially amounts to a four-man rush.
Well, in the second half, you know, if I'm Vance Joseph, I'm done playing man.
And on a lot of money downs, he did, they mugged up,
which, you know, all those guys of the line played zone behind it.
you know i thought i thought this the sim pressures late were a big deal and that's what todd bowles
did in the second half so the eagles have to have an answer for that going forward um and i would play
more zone against against this group i would play zone against this group in a heartbeat i mean
they have some of the best cover guys in the league in a heartbeat you play man coverage against
smitty and a j dude i know they had like there's an end racism thing in the end zone but i i thought
what they did to riley moss in the first half was a
racist. It was like they just, they were attacking this dude. They were like, the sleeves aren't
fool of me, brother. We're throwing at you. I mean, you can't play man coverage against this group.
And Jalen sees man coverage. I don't know if, uh, I don't know if he sees zone coverage as well.
You know, so, hey, Eagles fans, it ain't over, right? Like, teams fucking four and one is the team playing
kind of shitty as shitty as a four-on-one team can play but there's a long time to go in this season
there's a long time to go in this season this group can improve a lot uh i don't you know i thought
the play caller again petulow really if they execute we might be saying at the end of the day like
man they took some steps forward and i think you hear that in the locker room the last thing is
this like Denver did something pretty remarkable because i think the best thing that denver's
got going for him defensively it is the guys in the back end right but it's also those two edge guys
and for much of the game i thought and we we said this coming in is like if you're the eagles you got
to say hey you got these these two werewolves outside you know benito and cooper and they did
for most of the game it wasn't until late that you really started seeing these guys factor in
and uh and that's a really unique matchup nightmare for for the broncos is like hey one of our best
features can be totally negated by this team and they still found a way to keep the points down
and who fanga probably wish he caught that damn ball. I mean probably he does at that point that's
probably a pick six and so just a sloppy kind of lower scoring game with a lot of punts and
you know if the Eagles had executed and found a way to win that game 2117 or something like that
I don't think anybody's talking about being down in the dumps because we did see some
improvement in some of the things that like jalen hurts look very good throwing the ball outside of
numbers which is more like what we what we what we thought i know some people last week said oh well his
second half woes were due to a concussion it's kind of weird when we've gotten to the point that like
we stand so hard for players that we can't accept that they had a bad half we have to hope that
they had a concussion that's like it's like an awkward place to be but but here we are um so i i don't know
what else there is to say about that game. It was a fantastic effort by Denver. They got a little help
from the referees at the end of the game. I'm sure even the most, you know, Homer-type Eagles fans
will tell you over the last year and a half. Eagles have gotten help one Sunday out there. This game
ain't going to sink the season for the Eagles, but it's a big game for Denver. It's a bigger win for
Denver than it is a loss for the Eagles. It's really not about winning and losing the games for the
Eagles is about looking a lot better. Otherwise, we wouldn't be talking about this,
this shit that we've been talking about for the better part of three, four weeks, right?
Like, why does the offense look like this? Why does this look this way? What can we get
corner figured out? Why can we, you know, if it were just about wins and loss at this stage
in the season, then it wouldn't be such a, it wouldn't seem like a structure fire talking about
this team right now. They're four and one. So it really isn't about the win and the loss.
everything's out in front of them.
They join, if the Bucks can survive,
the Bucks are a one-loss team,
the Niners are a one-loss team.
Other than that, I think that's it
because the Rams lost the other night
and you're sitting atop the NFC,
sharing that spot with a couple very good teams,
and we'll see what happens from here.
But I think part of the problem going into a season like this
is, and it's a problem for everybody.
It's a problem for analysts who want to say,
hey, like, you know, somebody like me,
that it doesn't say, hey, the team's going to be just as good as last year.
People are like, hey, fuck you, man.
The other thing is, like, when you're defending a title,
it's not always going to be pretty.
We were four and six to start the season in 2018.
It is very difficult to do.
It could look a lot worse.
But I also think fans are a lot harder on the team because of the expectations, right?
And that's a good thing.
That means you know your team's very talented.
So we'll see what has.
happens here um but eagles had dude eagles have been here before as far as guys fighting and all this
shit and you know or tweeting like you know we've seen this movie before it's the only thing that
can derail the the locker room and the unity is losing so let's find a way to win on Thursday night
shall we um and as for the broncos just a just a fucking gutsy win man guts he wins sean payton
going for two that's big and almost fucked him because honestly if they don't go for two and they
just kicked. The Eagles aren't operating on that time, in that time frame at the end of the
game to get down to the four. If that gets called DPI, that's a direct result of that two-point
conversion. So hell of a game. Not the best one of the day, though, this game on right now.
Four minutes to go, Seattle driving with a chance to take the lead.
Beautiful uniform matchup, too. Could you imagine if the Eagles and the Broncos wore the proper
uniforms today how beautiful that would look um hey i love y'all i love all y'all i really do um come back
tomorrow for two o'clock show live show me and all the boys we're going to talk about all the games
but um hey the world ain't ain't ending uh at least not on the football field for eagles fans take care
