Starting point is 00:00:00 Joe Maz, what was the strangest tactic this year to get you guys going? The one that I've told people about before is, so his favorite animal is an orca whale or a killer whale. And so he pulled up this clip from National Geographic, and it's these three orca whales hunting this seal. And they're kind of scoping it out, and then they all, you know, attack this seal and kill it. His message was, you know, killer whales don't do it on their own. They wait for the others to attack their prey before they kill it. And that's what we got to do this year is do it together. And nobody can do it on their own.
Starting point is 00:00:40 Welcome to the Green Light podcast. Thanks for jumping in today. It is Megan. He's running the show here in Studio J. Bad Bat Back. He joins him for a good little while. They talk the Olympics, specifically, the basketball team starting five. Who should it be?
Starting point is 00:00:59 some birthday conversations, what does a 38-year-old want for his birthday? July 4 celebrations, trips to the beach, and tennis gambling. Wimbledon is upon us. It's Macon's usual time to shine, but he is bowing out of the gambling game. And all of that follows a great interview with Sam Houser, the NBA champion with the Boston Celtics fresh off a great parade in Boston. He talks about the championship run the Celtics went on, Jalen Brown and Jason Tatum, what two great teammates they are, being a dead eye three-point.
Starting point is 00:01:29 shooter getting to the league coming from UVA, what kind of coach Joe Missoula is, and he's got one hell of a championship parade story. Stick around. The fellas are all on point. Enjoy it. And we'll catch you on Friday with a great episode as well. All righty, it's the week of world champions on the Greenlight Pod minus our own. We're about to talk to Sam Hauser, he of the Boston Celtics. More importantly, he had the duck boat, and he had a very eventful time atop his duckboat during the Boston Celtics parade for their 18th World Championship. We'll get into that with Sam. Sam averaging nine points a game for the Celtics.
Starting point is 00:02:40 That's no joke. Kid went to Marquette, transferred to Virginia, did not get drafted, and now he's a rotational player for Boston. We'll talk to Sam here in a little bit. We'll talk to Heath Miller on Friday. Two-time World Champion with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Another Virginia guy and the consummate professional. I mean, what a stud.
Starting point is 00:03:05 Heath Miller coming up on the program. But we're without our own two-time or C-Long, who is in Montana. And let me be the very first on this show to wish his daughter, June. A very happy first birthday. It's important that we mentioned that, as Chris has. neglected to say it here. Cowboys in the studio, so is Kingston. Coach Bagkey's here. We're going to talk for a few minutes before getting to Sam today, then have a little fun on the back into this show. So stick with us. And Junie's not the only one with a birthday. Happy birthday making.
Starting point is 00:03:42 Oh, happy birthday making. Thank you guys. I really appreciate that. This will be my first ever birthday without O.J. Simpson being alive and sharing it with me. What are you asking for your birthday? All right. So I've got a lot of heat from Coach Badke in particular for getting presents throughout my life, both on my birthday and at Christmas. It's not getting presents. It's asking for presents. I don't know if it's that. I was essentially an only child. I was essentially an only child. I know you'll be shocked, okay? Only kid from my mom and my dad. There's some much older half-siblings.
Starting point is 00:04:27 But I, you know, I was, I got gifts, and they just didn't stop. My dad doesn't feel like the gift giving is for my dad. And do I feel like I'm 12 when I say, hey, hey, man, I'm out of boxer shorts? Yeah, I sure do. But then you get a refilled boxer short drawer. It's just the fact that you're 38 and you still have a birthday present list. Well, this year I don't and my dad is spiraling out of control. Called me at 7 o'clock last night.
Starting point is 00:05:01 Max, have you thought of anything? That's what dad's do. Like my dad does the same thing and I just piss them off because I just say like donate to some money to a charity for me. Well, of course you do. Of course you do. Wow. What I said was. Hey man, I got a million things going on at the house, which I meant when I said that I meant like,
Starting point is 00:05:25 we have a couple projects to do. If you want to contribute in some way, that would be super generous, no need to. But if you're wanting to help out in some way. But listen, what he heard, you're asking him to pay for your renovation. Yeah. But what he heard, what he heard was, I'm too busy right now to talk. I have a million things going on to the house. And so he goes, okay okay okay and just hot up so he's still at at 38 years old do you look better than you thought you would at 38 when you were younger oh holy Toledo what a question I think so just because when I was 17 years old and took my hat off in an SAT prep course in front of all the boys and girls my best buddy Matt Kingston said,
Starting point is 00:06:16 are you going bald? I had not once thought about my hair. I just took my hat off. There's some high peaks going on, maybe a little bit of recession, and in front of everybody says, are you going bald? The tides have changed a little bit.
Starting point is 00:06:36 I didn't mean to bring that up. Within 12 months, I was taking propitia. So there have been some performance enhancers, but no, I thought it'd be a little worse at this stage. It's good. But 38 Cowboy is a cool number because you look toward 40 and be like, oh, I can be in the best shape of my life by 40.
Starting point is 00:07:01 I think everyone falls into that trap, but I think it's like, all right, I got a couple years. I'll be, you know, an Adonis by then. All I need is time, which is a total. fallacy. I'm not going to do anything. I think you're better at basketball at 38 than you've ever been. Okay, pickup hoops.
Starting point is 00:07:20 I think this is the most important thing in my life. The old man game just really coming together for you or what? Well, dude. So they're 10, Kinks and I playing this pickup game. They're, you know, 10 to 15 guys once a week. And if they're 10 guys on the floor,
Starting point is 00:07:36 they're five, there are four guys who are good and they're three guys who are passable and they're three guys who are kind of no good. I'm the best player of the no good guys, but I like nowhere to be, pass the ball a lot. I'll box out.
Starting point is 00:07:52 I can't rebound, but I'll box out. And we set screens. Oh, yeah. All I do is set screens and I call out screens. Slide. Laugh. You're clear? He does talk the whole time.
Starting point is 00:08:04 I love it. But the other night, we didn't have great numbers. So we got down at the end of the night after a couple dropped out to threes, to three on three, and the core open up a little bit. A little mid-range game opened up for me. Kingston's actually good. He played varsity hoops on a very good team.
Starting point is 00:08:21 He can play very savvy, high IQ, can finish only with his left hand, which is weird for a righty. But no, I was... Hold on, hold on, he can only finish with his left, but he's righty. He's never been able to shoot. But he's kind of like a point God sort of player.
Starting point is 00:08:43 Appreciate that. Yeah, you're welcome. You know you're not a good player when you count the points you scored. But in those last two games, you know, playing to seven by ones, I counted for seven of the 14. We won both games. Counting your points and having a birthday day present list. Like, what are we talking about here?
Starting point is 00:09:02 Only child sort of stuff. I guess so. My friend, only child sort of stuff. I scored seven a game. Sam Houser scores nine. Nine a game he had. That's a sneaky nine. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:09:14 Good for him. Nine a game, three and a half boards and assist in 22 minutes. 79 games played. That's a guy that will stay in the league for 15 years. Let's hope. Let's hope. That'd be great. He's carved out a roll.
Starting point is 00:09:28 Just shoot the ball. Good for him. Green light. Always has the green light. And one hell of a parade story, which you'll hear. Absolutely. Here's Sam Houser. We'll talk to you on the back end.
Starting point is 00:09:42 Hey, y'all. Greenlight has official merch, like this hat right here, like the one on my head, this dad hat. Love this hat. I'm not even a dad hat guy, but this thing fits great. This, this hat right here fits great. We've got hoodies. We've got tea. By the way, this hoodie's like super comfy. I mean, it's like soft, plush. It's not the type of hoodie that's going to get stiff with one wash. and the shirts too because like I'm a big comfort guy okay you got like this white shirt here you got the shirt with the logo the abbey road looking logo with dr. fax smoking uh presumably a blunt Kyle carrying cowboy reed making driveling a basketball which I've never seen him actually do and me carrying a football and then you've got the the black shirt here too with the logo so stickers hit the link in the description in the video uh below the
Starting point is 00:10:39 video actually and make sure to tag us on social media showing off your green light merch it's quality quality threads here okay wouldn't do it any other way all right sam hauser's a world champion and sam we will get to your life and career i promise but of course we need to start with your vomiting atop the duck boat at the parade on june the 21st how much notice did your body give you that something was a miss? It was pretty quick. Yeah, it was, you know,
Starting point is 00:11:19 you don't drink for, I didn't drink all playoffs, and I really didn't drink much throughout the season. And then, you know, everybody starts chucking drinks at you and you just want to, you know, put them back for the people. And then I hit a cigar and that got me all spinning. And then shortly after that, it was puke time.
Starting point is 00:11:37 what was the day like leading up what time did you wake up was there any breakfast which duck boat were you on um so i think so i had my whole family and my wife's family in town and i think we all woke up at probably probably 7 a.m got a little breakfast in all of us and then we had to be to the arena by about 930 i think it was and And then a couple things happened at the arena, and then we were on the duck boat. And I got my own duck boat, surprisingly. Nice.
Starting point is 00:12:16 I'm not sure how that happened, but it was just my family and my wife's family, and it was a lot of fun. Now, I assume if anybody pukes, you don't want it known that you're puking. How soon after the parade did you find out it had been captured on film? And then how long was it? before you realized, oh, I'm now a legend for this.
Starting point is 00:12:40 This is a good thing. That night, probably around five or six. I mean, I didn't have my phone on me all day. But I think my mom pulled it up and she, I don't know how many times she watched it, probably a good 20 to 25 times. But yeah, I remember doing it. And in the moment, people were cheering, you know, it was a quick rally after it. So I was impressed with myself.
Starting point is 00:13:04 It was really quick. Did you, what did you throw up into? So we had a cooler full of beer and actually in the video you can see my wife on her hands and knees trying to get the beer out because I had, I told her that I'm getting ready to throw up. And she didn't get all the beer out. So I threw up on some of those and then we ended up throwing those to the crowd. So some people got some throw out beers. Yeah. That's incredible.
Starting point is 00:13:33 and safe to say your wife's a keeper, I guess. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. She's also seven months pregnant, which makes it even more impressive. Holy Toledo. Seven-month pregnant wife on her hands and knees getting beers out of a cooler to save the beers before her drunk husband pukes all over them. The beers that will then be thrown into the crowd in Boston. Legendary.
Starting point is 00:14:00 That is awesome. Is this your first kid? Yes, first one. Nice. Congrats. When's the due date? September 6th. So we're getting closer every day here.
Starting point is 00:14:13 Chris has three kids. I have three kids. The whole best day of your life thing is a misnomer. That's not true. The day the kid is born, it's weird and strange and shocking. The vibes are just off. When that baby starts to develop a personality, like nine months or so, that's when you're in business.
Starting point is 00:14:33 but, you know, don't, is there a name picked out? Do we have a, do you break any news here? No, nothing yet. We got some feelers, but nothing quite yet. Yeah, my wife said to come with a list. I came with eight. She came with one, which I wouldn't really say as a list. She's more so telling me with the baby is going to be named.
Starting point is 00:14:54 All right. All right. So let's go through the playoffs. In the finals, you shoot 48% from three, you have a really big game three. in a seven point win in Dallas. But that's coming off two series against Cleveland and Indiana where you weren't at your best. How is it maintaining confidence, especially when your role is such that you don't know if you're playing 10 minutes in a game or 25? Yeah, it's tough, you know, but it's part of being in the role that I am on such a good team.
Starting point is 00:15:31 and so everybody's got a sacrifice, and that was part of me sacrificing, you know, kind of just being ready whenever the number's called for however long it is. And sometimes it's tough to get a rhythm playing like that. And I think that probably showed a little bit in the Cleveland and Indiana series. But, you know, you just got to keep shooting. Shooters keep shooting. Got to stay confident. And, you know, in the Dallas series, I played a little bit more, which I don't know if that helped my rhythm or not.
Starting point is 00:16:00 but shots were going in and yeah I was just glad I stuck with it and you know water always finds at the level so yeah yeah at some point during the series against Dallas Doris and JJ that's L.A. Lakers head coach J.J. Reddick started to talk about Sam Houser's defense and it was look you can't pick on this guy he's staying in front of everybody and we at home are like yeah he went to Virginia like you know how to
Starting point is 00:16:30 play on ball defense. But how much pride do you take in your defense and being able to play on both sides of the court against guys like Luca Donchich, maybe the best in the world? Yeah, for sure. I mean, I mean, I just, you know, like you said, you just got to take pride and if they're going to continually call you up into an ISO, you got to try to hold your own. And my biggest thing was like, you know, I'm going to get scored on by the two. They're two of the best scores in the world. But how can I make it difficult for them? Can I make them make them make multiple moves and not worry about the result and just worry about the process? And I think I did a good job of that and just try to compete on the ball and do the best I can. And I think
Starting point is 00:17:13 the results were pretty good. Were you surprised that Chris Stops played in game five was everybody? So I had a feeling he would, you know, try to gut it out. But we weren't really sure. because of what happened. Obviously, like kind of a weird injury. But we were happy he was out there and able to be a part of it. And I know he really wanted to be a part of it. And when you can have a big 7-3 guy who can shoot 3s out there, it's always helpful.
Starting point is 00:17:43 Yeah, no doubt. When you're on the dais after the game's over, you've won the title. And it's Adam Silver, I believe, saying the Bill Russell finals MVP, is whose name do you think it's coming out of his mouth you know that was i was interesting uh we really did not know it could have gone either way between jason or jalen um even like drew i probably got some lot i feel like after the first two or three games he was definitely in contention for it too so uh but either jason or jellan they both deserved it if they could share the award i'm
Starting point is 00:18:24 sure they they would have done that but um jalen had a heck of a season serious heck of a playoff run and on both sides of the ball too he's he's a freak and um just really gifted and he's he's such a good player yeah why does it seem like people try to drive them apart is it because there's no animosity is it because there's no clear alpha it's not a jordan pippin situation it's not shack coby where they actually had their own issues personality wise it's more so that they're just two really good players who get along so we have to manufacture some sort of issue. Yeah, I just feel like people just want a narrative and something to talk about,
Starting point is 00:19:05 whether it's real or not, people are going to create one. And I mean, those guys have won a lot of games and a lot of playoff games in their careers. And I don't mean, everybody can, I don't know what they can say now, now that we got to the mountain top and those guys played the way they did. So, you know, there's no animosity in the locker room at all or in the personal life. So just two really stand-up guys who are, you know, selfless. And I think that that kind of is viewed as passive, I guess, in a way, which is unfortunate. Okay, you're on a deserted island.
Starting point is 00:19:40 But weirdly, there are only two-on-two basketball tournaments being played on this deserted island. Are you bringing Jalen or Jason with you to the aforementioned island? I'll bring both and I'll sit out and walk. Okay. All right. Very political answer. Well done. Joe Maz, what was the strangest tactic this year to get you guys going? Strangest one. There's a lot of them. The one that I've told people about before is, so his favorite animal is an orca whale or a killer whale. And so he pulled up this clip from National Geographic, and it's the,
Starting point is 00:20:29 these three orca whales hunting this seal and they kind of pop their head out of the water and check out where this seal is at and it's on this isolated piece of ice in the middle of the ocean and they're kind of scoping it out and then they all, you know, attack this seal and kill it. And his like message was, you know, killer whales don't do it on their own. They wait for the others to attack their prey before they kill it. And that's what we got to do this year is do it together. And nobody can do it on their own. So interesting tactic, but the message is well received.
Starting point is 00:21:08 So he has a captive audience and he's just making you all watch seal murder. Pretty much. There's nothing you can do about it. What's his hit rate on things like those? I mean, is he pretty good? Is it 50% or some guys rolling their eyes sometimes? I'd say it's, I would say it's upwards of. 75%
Starting point is 00:21:30 You know, a couple movie clips in there that maybe go, I don't think everybody knows the movie clips he shows sometimes. Like it's a lot of the town, Whiplash, he does a lot of UFC fights,
Starting point is 00:21:44 the orc whale thing. I think we did a, I think there was a lion one where they killed a, I don't know, a gazelle or something. So it's anything he can pull from somewhere else.
Starting point is 00:21:56 He's going to try to incorporate it into basketball. And now you're getting the band back together. I think it's the top nine guys are all ready to come back. Jason just signed the richest contract in history. Derek White's deal is huge. Picked up the Sam Houser option. I mean, are we already talking repeat with this crew?
Starting point is 00:22:21 It seems like you have really good vibes. And maybe starting with a guy like Drew, that's the way I'll ask the question who will be playing for Team USA this summer. What does a guy like that do for a locker room where there are bona fide stars and high expectations and a coach we don't quite know what we have after going 80 and 21 or whatever it is? I think we know what we have now. But speak about Drew Holiday and what he means for a team that's looking to go back to back. Yeah, he, I kind of view him as like the glue that kind of keeps everything together.
Starting point is 00:23:02 Him and Al, I think, take that role. And, you know, having a guy brought in who has won a championship can bring that DNA to us who, you know, self-ings have been really close a lot in the last seven or eight years and just haven't been able to get there until now. Now, it's pretty cool, you know, a guy of that statute and not have an ego to sacrifice to maybe limit. his role offensively a little bit, but still be an absolute alpha on the defensive end and kind of manned us from that side of the ball. So bringing a guy like that in is, it couldn't have been more of a seamless fit. And what about your career getting to this point? Stevens Point, Wisconsin guy, which means something to us here in Seaville with Coach Bennett's connections.
Starting point is 00:23:48 You go to Marquette, you transfer to Virginia. How strange were those two last years in college? because you're one of the last true transfers. You had to actually sit out for a year and then COVID happens. And there's a 23 game or so regular season. You're playing an NCAA tournament in Bloomington. And I don't know how many people were in that arena. How wild was that to go to a new place and then be hit with a sit-out year, which you knew was coming, and then a pandemic?
Starting point is 00:24:21 Yeah, it was crazy. I can't like you know my red street year was whatever I knew it to expect I just wanted to go in and get better and honestly it was probably the best thing for me just to work on my game work on my body and then COVID hits in February that year and you know you don't you don't really know what to make of it and then we're going into next season where don't even know if we're going to have a season quite yet and then all of a sudden we play games but we're getting games canceled as well and then going into the tournament that year we got sent home early from the ACCC. tournament in the semis because one of our guys cracked positive. And we didn't know if the season was over, like if we were going to play in the tournament or not. And we ended up playing in the tournament on zero practice days for the seven days leading up to it and end up losing in the first round. And, you know, career is over after that. And it was kind of wild, but I'm a big
Starting point is 00:25:15 believer in everything happens for a reason. And I feel like it was all part of this journey and a big part of why I'm here right now. were you and joe ever going to be a package deal transferring did you talk about that yeah we initially went into the process saying like we're going to go together no matter what um i think that's what we both wanted and then all of a sudden we just took a like it to different schools honestly and there was nothing more to it than that really he he was heavily recruited by michigan state out of high school and i honestly thought he was going to go there initially and not come to marquette but um
Starting point is 00:25:52 ended up coming to Marquette, and then I was recruited by Virginia out of high school as well, and took an official. I just wanted to stay close to the home at the time, but I feel like we both ended up at the school maybe we should have started at. But like I said before, it all happens for a reason, and we both had great college careers and wouldn't change it for anything. Do you remember off the top of your head, Tony Bennett's five pillars? humility, passion, servanthood, thankfulness, and unity.
Starting point is 00:26:26 There we go. Yeah, you got it. Five for five. That team featured Trey Murphy, too, and you had Jay Huff, Kehey, other guys. Coach has taken some heat for his offense. He also has a national title and more wins than any other school over the last 10 years except for, I think,
Starting point is 00:26:48 in Zagin, Kansas. What would you say to his detractors? What did he do for you in your career, getting you ready? Yeah, I mean, people who are bashing him, they don't know, like, the ins and outs of basketball and how it works, probably. He's like the most genuine person in college basketball. What he did for me was special. You know, he took extra time.
Starting point is 00:27:17 I read your year to work me. work me out after practice or before practice when head coaches probably usually don't do that for red shirts. But he knew where I could help the team, how I could get better, and help me expand my game in a lot of different ways than I was expecting, and especially on defense. And I can't thank him enough for those two years I was there. And to be able to play for him was special, even though it was weird circumstances. I loved playing for him. And he's one of my favorite coaches I've ever had. You wore 10 at Marquette, 10 at Virginia, now 30 in Boston.
Starting point is 00:27:53 I think it's Jojo White who has 10 retired. It's too many retired numbers. I mean, they're like 25 retired numbers in Boston. You can hang them in the rafters, but you should be able to wear them, is my personal opinion. We have poor Xavier Tillman out there wearing 26. How did you get to 30? And I guess part of the reason is you don't have very many options in Boston.
Starting point is 00:28:18 Yeah, I mean, I think my options were 27, 28, 29, 30, and then like 90 and above. So 30 just seemed the cleanest, and I think I wear it well. I don't think I would, I just didn't think 27 or 28 looked that great on me. So I think I chose the right number. I'm just glad it was available. I know. I don't think they look good on anybody. What's the off-season look like for you?
Starting point is 00:28:50 Are you the quintessential gym rat? Or are you we just played into late June? I need some time off. Yeah, I am on that wave right now. These last two weeks have just been kind of enjoying the festivities and just resting, you know, playing a lot of golf, you know, just laying low, really, just anything to get away from basketball for a little bit. And, you know, you play nine and a half months straight.
Starting point is 00:29:18 You just, it's good a little reset right now and refresher. So I'll get back at it maybe a week or two, but, yeah, I'm in no rest right now. What's your swing thought when you're standing over the ball? What's the last thing you tell yourself? Smooth and easy. Yeah, big smooth. Yeah. You are big smooth, correct?
Starting point is 00:29:41 Yeah, that is a. Twitter handle I had, yes. Okay, I like that. This Baylor-Shireman cat, all right, mid-20s, Midwestern white guy who shoots the ball. Are we going to be nice to this guy coming in, or are we going to be mean to him? I mean, you know, classic rookie, you know, duties and all that. But other than that, you know, I'm not very confrontational or anything like that. I'll probably be a nice guy to him, as you could say, yeah.
Starting point is 00:30:15 Are you, are you, when your, your role is fairly defined, you're a, you're a knockdown shooter, and you obviously can do everything at a high level because you're a rotation guy on the world champion Celtics. Are you looking to expand your game in ways at this stage in your career? Yeah, I think there's always room for improvement. improvement in the things that you're not good at, but also the things that you're doing really well. I think you can always get better.
Starting point is 00:30:45 And, you know, with the roster we have, you know, my role is still going to be probably similar to what it was, but how can I, you know, do little things here and there to expand it a little bit? And I don't know what that looks like at the moment. You know, we're going to have a similar roster, but, you know, every year is different. You never know what can happen, you know. So, you know, I'm going to work hard this summer and do things to improve. But in terms of my role, I think it might be pretty similar to what it was, which is fine.
Starting point is 00:31:14 You're part of a good team, and I'm looking forward to the season and whatever I have to do to help this team win. Yeah, you're 26. You're the type of guy who's also playing when he's 36, which is not a bad type of player to be. All right, we put you in a gem. How many uncontested threes are you making in an ideal setting? How many of my shooting? 100 100
Starting point is 00:31:40 I probably get I would say like 80 to 85 probably in that range okay that's ridiculous and is that highest on the team it's probably up there I mean shooting with nobody in the gym
Starting point is 00:31:56 standstill I feel like a lot of guys are pretty good at that I honestly might prefer just like a slight contest like just kind of keeps you in your rhythm some of those wide open shots sometimes are harder, honestly. And I know you've been in low-key mode.
Starting point is 00:32:12 You just won the title. But are you paying attention to free agency now that it's begun, what the Knicks have done with that Bridges trade? Philly and Paul George is likely official by now. Milwaukee seems to be about health. Do you pay attention to the rest of the Eastern Conference here in early July, or you'll show up when the schedule comes out? I know I've been keeping tabs of what's happening, mainly with our team and who we're, you know,
Starting point is 00:32:42 we just signed in the last couple days. And obviously the Knicks, you know, made a big trade and they're looking good for next year. But, you know, I'm always pretty confident in what we have coming back in our top eight guys in the rotation. So, yeah, so we'll see, you know, we're going to have a target on our back going in the next season for sure. But that's kind of what you want. That's what you strive towards. This trend of wearing non-white jerseys at home is despicable. The black is awful. But I was even offended by the green you guys wore at home in the clincher.
Starting point is 00:33:17 Didn't you grow up on white jerseys at home, dark jerseys on the road in the NBA? Yeah, I did. But honestly, I don't think it's up to us. I think it's literally the NBA makes like the jersey schedule. even in the playoffs they're making the calls you guys aren't voting on it or anything no no we literally like i don't even know what color we're wearing until i get to the arena most times that is among the most disappointing things i've ever heard i mean we had a we had tradition this league used to be about tradition and now they've gone and made a mockery of it what is your favorite you need aware of the ones that you've worn in Boston thus far.
Starting point is 00:34:00 Oh. It's hard to beat like the classic, you know, I do like the green jerseys a lot. They're just classic vintage. If I had to pick a second one, I do like the black ones. I do. I think they're sharp. Okay. Okay, Sam.
Starting point is 00:34:22 The all white just makes me look slow, so I, you know. Are you aware that the entire franchise is for sale? I am aware. We could get you in trouble with a question like that. Do you think it's somewhat ridiculous that you guys go out and play 100 games and win a title? Then the first person they hand the trophy to is the owner, who, you know, us casuals, we don't even know his name? You know, I'm just going to pass on that question.
Starting point is 00:34:54 He's selling, Sam. He's selling. We can answer truthfully now. I guess we're at a pretty good selling point right now. I can't blame them for wanting to make some money. Yeah. Jason, here's $314 million. I'm going to slip out the side door before we have to play Pay Houser and all those guys.
Starting point is 00:35:16 Thanks, man. Before we get you out of here, this is more often than not a football pod. Being from where you are, are you a Packers guy? I am a diehard Packers fan Okay, let's talk about him Jordan Love I mean is this just Easy succession
Starting point is 00:35:31 Far of Rogers Love It's just gonna keep rolling We'll see You know See if you can put a full year together first You know The first half of the year You could tell he was
Starting point is 00:35:42 You know He was getting used to things The second half of the year He played unbelievable And I'm excited to see what this year brings Youngest roster in the league Again
Starting point is 00:35:50 And we're one game away From the Super Bowl So, you know, we'll see here, see what happens. But we're excited. You know, people are going to hate us for having another franchise quarterback, but we love that. Presumably you've been to Lambo before, yeah? Yeah, my grandparents have season tickets. So we would, I think I've been to probably, we try to go once a year, so maybe like eight games probably.
Starting point is 00:36:16 You know, we didn't go when we were real young, but when we got a little older, we try to go more. if green bay is playing in new england which is a rarity i mean are you are you going full cheesehead or what's the move farb jersey's coming out cheesehead is coming out every every packers every thing of packers i have is coming out maybe a chain maybe a flag i don't know i got it all you got to be loyal i respect it um and and then you get to go and you get to go to work in the not technically the old Boston Garden, but we there's still the parquet. You can call out the garden. Not a bad couple venues to to grow up on and then spend your time at work at. Sam, thanks for your time. It was awesome watching you play throughout these playoffs. You only
Starting point is 00:37:09 played in the orange and blue for a year, but we have great pride watching you. And, you know, they say you're from Virginia and we hope that never changes. Don't give Mark had any credit. Just keep the UVA stuff rolling. And keep on winning, man. For sure. Be the first to win back to back here and oh wow, we'll be cheering for you. That'd be awesome. I don't get a degree from our kids. I only got the degree from Virginia, so I don't think that's going to change, you know? There you go. Is it in a frame? Do you know where it is? It's in my parents' house in a frame. Perfect. We're good. We're good. Love that. Awesome. Thank you. Wah-hoo-wah. Take care. We'll see you soon.
Starting point is 00:37:52 Thank you. Appreciate you for having me. That was Sam. Cowboy in Kingston. Y'all have heard that interview. Coach Beck, you have not. I just want to reiterate for the listener, tell you for the first time, Hauser was atop the duckboat. He needs to puke because he's been drinking too much. He's about to puke into a cooler full of beers, okay? So is seven-month pregnant, wife bends over to the cooler to try to start saving the beers. What a lady. He then pukes onto beers and then throws the puk beers into the crowd. Hey, here, have a beer. Have a beer. That's a tough one to come back from. She's a keeper, though. No doubt about it. I mean, that's for
Starting point is 00:38:41 sure the takeaway. But also, if you got a Hauser puke beer, that's a nice story. How well do you think Sam Hazer would do in Yel's pickup game if he had to play left-handed? Oh, I'm sure he's dominate. Well, maybe he wouldn't get a text back from Macon because I was supposed to, you said you're going to text me if you went and then you went and I heard from someone else that you did and then I didn't get a text. All right. My feelings are. I would have loved to have swatted your shot too. Please, dude. Inside outside game, dude. I mean, at, at, a bigger guy on me, I'm going to go around him. At some point, I got to stop being responsible. responsible for all you people. It's Wednesday nights at 730. You know where the gym is.
Starting point is 00:39:20 What more? I show up. I'm just going off. I'm going on. You told me you were going to text me. I didn't ask you to text me. Yeah, but you were like text me when you're on your way. When I'm on my way, I am locked in. I am listening to Hansen on repeat, just envisioning. I really am. Have you seen these IG clips where Hansen is, uh, uh, what's it called when there are no instruments? Wait, you're 38 years old. Yeah, they're my generation. You totally just gaslighted me. You glossed over the fact that you said you were going to text me and then you just said that I said for you to text me. That's not the case. When they are a cappella in at our age, now their voices have changed, it really is stunning.
Starting point is 00:40:06 I've still never heard it. I'd highly recommend it. I think we need to work on your pump-up music a little bit. Is that why I'm not able to get rebounds? Well, I would say that you're not, you put yourself in the category of bad players, totally disagree. You are passable. Oh, I'm in that middle group? Yeah, you have skills, you have fundamentals. You're not like your friend Kyle just chucking the ball out of bounds.
Starting point is 00:40:32 Okay. I really appreciate your saying that. That means a lot to me. I'm not really good at dribbling, but there was, I got by Kyle, like from the top of the key to the hoop. Well, your game is deceptive because you're big, like you're tall. So people assume you're going to play forward, but you're really more of like a perimeter player. Right. This guy, Leo, he's called Leo.
Starting point is 00:40:55 He played hoops at an ivy. He was coming to swat my shot. He's like six, seven cat. But I like short-armed a layup. If you can tear drop like a layup, little short-arm it, that's what I did, got it up on the backboard and then, you know? Turning into a crafty little game. So would you consider like a stretch three?
Starting point is 00:41:16 Is that where you are? Yeah, maybe stretch two. But then I end up guarding the fours and five just because I'm a little bit tall. So you're stretched three. Yeah. What's better offensive or defensive side of the ball for you? Offense. I don't know about that.
Starting point is 00:41:35 I do. Well, point being, there's nothing better than pick up hoops. It's a lot of fun. You still remind me of. the player comp I gave you maybe 20 years ago. Chuck Person? Chuck Person. The rifleman?
Starting point is 00:41:50 Yeah. Nice. Yeah. Yeah. There was a reference of him a couple months back. Like when he went to jail? No, he got busted for all that recruiting stuff. Yeah, I don't know if he's in prison, but yeah, the recruiting stuff didn't go so well.
Starting point is 00:42:06 Yeah. Go harder, go home. For old Chuck. At 38 years old, what is your birthday wish list? Is there a new pair of basketball shoes? Do you need, like, knee pads? I went to Dix, and I tried to get the Jom Morantz. Mm-hmm.
Starting point is 00:42:23 Because I-hmm. Discounted. Yeah, I want to support his, you know, reclamation, his arc, you know? Mm-hmm. Put on the 12s, way too small. Had to go 13. Oh, we don't have a 13. Like, okay, these Januses are fairly inoffensive.
Starting point is 00:42:41 Can I get those in a 13? No, I don't have a 13. those. Like, what are we doing here? We have to stock the shelves. So I had to go with these grotesque-looking LeBrons. From far away, they look okay, up close. Not so hot, but everything is bright pink and green and yellow. We had Rick Carlisle on a couple weeks ago. He's wearing these bright-ass colored shoes. Are they light? No, the LeBrons are kind of clunky. They've always kind of been clunky. Yeah. They make me feel like I'm six to eight, 270. They're heavy, but I never worry about my ankles. Kingston, what did you go with? I got the Lucas. Did you? Nice.
Starting point is 00:43:18 Got to get the Sabrina's, the Ioanoscus. Yeah, Hinescu. Yeah. Drew Holiday was wearing those the other day at M.E.'s training camp. Does everyone have a shoe now? Pretty much. What was your favorite shoe growing up? Probably AI for me. Oh, yeah. I might surprise you with this, because the low-hanging fruit is Jordans. Yeah. But I like the, I like the Barclays back in the day that had the oh i don't even remember though you remember the the air pocket went all the way around oh yeah they were pretty cool i thought those were cool i had the mcgratees those sweet tracy mcgraties my parents and black i don't know if i know those my parents were always trying to save money on shoes so i ended up with starberries yeah star bear oh yeah he had his own shoe
Starting point is 00:44:06 brand he did and did he try to yeah he was like affordable he's like i want all the kids to have it yeah but none of the kids wanted them. That's a good looking shoe, cowboy. So what else is on your list, though? All right, I wear an A shirt every day underneath my polo. They used to go by another name. If I got restocked with a bunch of A shirts, I'd be a happy camper.
Starting point is 00:44:31 All I really want is like 30 minutes to myself, just in peace and quiet. Good look. That would be lovely. I don't think that's too much that has. And if you want to really, reinforce my back deck. That's not a euphemism. That'd be great too. Just call your dad. Just call my dad. Becky, as a man of 44, some ungodly number. I mean,
Starting point is 00:44:57 what are you wanting? Like an AARP card, a casket. I'll tell you what I'm on. Yeah? Borrowed time. Yeah, it's exactly right. Oh my God. I didn't think I make it to 38, 40, no chance. Here's the thing. You know how they tell you things at 40 get a little bit wonky as far as they get up, you're a little bit more sore? Yeah. 100% true. Yeah. 100.
Starting point is 00:45:21 So enjoy these next two years because it gets a little harder at 40. True story. Well, our entire lives, you know, 40 was ancient. Now here we are. Yeah. Yeah. Kingston's 40 a week after me, by the way. We're 38 as well.
Starting point is 00:45:39 Every single age, you'll be that age a week. after I am. That's how ages work. How old are you, Cowboy? 30. 30. You're 30? Zero. Dude, I give a left nut to be 30. Like right now, if someone's like, give me your left nut to be 30, no problem.
Starting point is 00:45:57 What was Becky doing at 30 years old? Oh, we just opened up Trinity. Slinging vodka cranberries. Yeah, yeah. Selling five dollar well drinks to college kids. Nice. Yeah. Coach, how's your fourth of July? Oh, where to be.
Starting point is 00:46:11 Again, that's a loaded question. Had it great, was that a family reunion for my wife's side of the family? With some people you know, some people you don't, let me tell you what a family reunion over a week span is like. It's like going to the grocery store, running into somebody you kind of know, and then constantly running into them again after the initial hello. The next dial. Like the next style, but it just keeps going for like a week.
Starting point is 00:46:41 What was the location? We were in Hilton Head. Fantastic time. I did have an uncle asked me if the Playboy channel was available. That was a little weird. But overall, great time. Hilton Head's great. Very chill.
Starting point is 00:46:57 I was going to say, that's a nice place for a few. We did do the family road trip. We put everybody in there eight hours. Kids were great. Good? Kids were great. Last two hours on the way there. You know, my wife,
Starting point is 00:47:11 Megan, God, I love her. She's like, you want me to drive? I said, no, my eagle got, I'm like, I'm finishing this thing. Yeah. You know, the last two hours felt longer than the first six. That's always how it is. Yeah. Brutal. Yeah. Oh, it's brutal. I once worked for CBS sports in Fort Lauderdale, Florida for one day. And once, yeah, one day. And once I decided it wasn't for me at the end of that day, I drove from, from Fort Lauderdale to Charlottesville, through the night, 13 and a half hours. Now, Google Maps will tell you that's more like a 16 or 17-hour trip. I was humming.
Starting point is 00:47:48 Just get that adrenaline going. Nothing can stop you. I've done that drive. That is the same thing. You worked at CBS Sports for one day? For one day. I realized it wasn't for me. Packed everything up, bailed.
Starting point is 00:48:01 What were you listening to to keep you rolling? Anything? Oh, probably pop country. Can he? Which is a good area of the country to listen to, said Pop. country. Yeah. And to be clear, I understand that the music is air quotes not good. Okay. Honestly, I'd love to be someone who liked good music. The Stapletons, you know, the Sturgle Simpsons, all these guys, these nuts talk about. But when I hear Kenny, when I hear Eric Church,
Starting point is 00:48:36 Hanson. All right. I don't know, man. I can. happy. You enjoy what you enjoy. I got a dad. He's all into this COVID stuff, right? Doesn't like to leave the house. I say to him, dad, you can live and die out there or you can live and die in here, referring to his living room. And he said, yeah, I like it in here. And I said, say less. That's awesome, man. If you're living happy days, more power to you. And I just happen to like terrible music. let me tell you something if you look at my phone right now when i go to the gym later on don't think brittany spears and pink aren't on it yeah so hey to each little bit who who were the kids listening to in the road trip did you have iPads and they just did the games and all that
Starting point is 00:49:24 stuff we kind of all did our own thing i listen to the green light pod day you know caught up on my things there that was great um so i listened to making uh yeah thanks for eight hours as we've discussed uh Chris is in Montana, which is they're on a big old lake. I'm not a lake guy unless it's a big old lake. That lake is beautiful up there. We're about to go to the beach again. Beach is problematic, especially with three kids at one, two, and three. Bad idea.
Starting point is 00:49:55 Three-year-old wants in the ocean. Two-year-old wants far away from the ocean. One-year-old is melting into the beach. We've talked about this before. It's a bad scene. It is a terrible idea. terrible ice with kids sand everywhere just go to a lake or go to a pool yeah why ah why i don't like pools but i hate pools yeah there's still water all there's gonna be one or the other you you you
Starting point is 00:50:23 decided to have kids dude they're gonna want to do something so you got to pick your poison yeah but just to the girl the other day we get out of the pool hey you need to go potty she knows how to go potty now hey you need to go potty no i went in the pool oh terrific you and all the you and 25 other little snotts, just whizzing in the pool. It's disgusting, dude. You never pissed in a pool? No, I never, I never went into the pool. And I surely don't as an adult when I'm catching the kids jumping off. You didn't go to a pool as a kid? No. No, that doesn't surprise me. Like, I was forced to learn how to swim one summer and that was the extent of it. I hate a pool. Can we have a field trip for a green light and see Macon in a pool? I've seen them in a pool before.
Starting point is 00:51:05 I don't know what that's true. I think people want to see that. And I like the, ocean. If there was nothing better than having a tennis ball thrown to you from the beach while you were in the ocean, it's getting smacked by the wave trying to hang on and complete the catch, but the beach is the problem. The skin cancer, the set up self. What do you do with your phone? Do you leave it back at the house? That sand's not getting out of there. I was on edge the whole time. I got a seven-year-old that thinks he's 16 jumping in the water. Then I got the five-year-old. playing in the sand nice and sweet, but then all of a sudden she drift off.
Starting point is 00:51:42 Your head's on a swivel. Yeah. It's brutal. I mean, we had a good time. It sounds like it. We had a good time. Maybe there's some beaches out there that have the water and all that fun stuff,
Starting point is 00:51:55 but a very sliver bit of beach. And maybe not many people. Maybe we can find those. If you're a listener and you have one of those beaches, maybe let us. You know what I'd like? I'd like a beach with grass. How about that?
Starting point is 00:52:07 Okay. That's not that. It's not a beach anymore. I know, but give me a little bit more grass, so we're away from the sand. I'm really looking into Maine. I want to be the family who goes to Maine for 10 days every summer. We're like five years out from that, but I want to be that family. Cape Cod's a good time.
Starting point is 00:52:27 I've been there. I like it. The little pounds are nice. Not Maine, but yeah, close. Maine's got the best basketball prospect in the country, Cooper Flagg, 17 years old, going to do this weekend. I was watching him play a scrimmage against Team USA.
Starting point is 00:52:42 He looked for real. He could shoot too, can he? What a seamless C block we're having right now. All right. So the Olympics, yeah? That's, uh, we're like three weeks out from the Olympics. Love the Olympics.
Starting point is 00:52:56 Yeah. Do you? I love them. I think winning a gold medal, I think I've said this before. Winning a gold medal to say you're the best in the world or whatever weird sport it is is truly incredible. Yeah, I think that's a relevant adjective to use regarding the sport.
Starting point is 00:53:13 Yeah, I get into the swimming especially. Because it's not judged, anything that's not judged. I like to watch the swimming. Don't like to be in the pool itself. I picture you, this is what we need to do. You need to put on that swimsuit that's like the old school one. Yeah. Kind of like your A shirt.
Starting point is 00:53:30 Yeah, yeah. You know, but it goes down in the shorts. Yeah. That's his normal swimsuit. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, what do you mean? Like 1930.
Starting point is 00:53:38 So I've been watching a bunch of the team USA practice footage and watching the FBA qualification, which was crazy. They didn't even put it on TV, Luca versus Janice for a spot in the Olympics. But I've been looking at this team USA roster. It's pretty solid. Who do you guys think should be the starting five? Do you guys want to draft a starting five, or is that going to be too complicated? Coach Bakke and I versus you two?
Starting point is 00:54:02 Okay. I'm looking at this group. it's LeBron, it's Steph, it's KD, it's Embed, Jason Tatum, Devin Booker, Drew Holliday, AD, Anthony Edwards, Bam out of Bio, Tyrese Halliburton, and Kawhi Leonard. I think you want one of these excellent perimeter guys, one of these excellent wings that these other countries have trouble with, two-way player.
Starting point is 00:54:32 Do you agree with me or not, Coach? I do. So I'm thinking, who are you thinking? You've got to start Braun, right? Definitely not. You guys can have him at one. You're taking LeBron James one overall? No, I'm just, he's older than we are.
Starting point is 00:54:47 Do you really think so? Just because of legacy? Because he's been there before? Yeah. Anthony Edwards. Let's go Anthony Edwards. Great. Forget what I said about the wing.
Starting point is 00:54:56 Go with the most dynamic, electric player. That's a right pick. Thank you, Kevin. All our picks, though. If you guys are taking Anthony Edwards, one we're taking him at two you took braon lebron james at one my friend i was just saying brown needed to be a starter but fine fine you have the third pick go ahead the gaslighting that's going out with this guy is and we're snaking right just to make sure we're not we'll go ab you have the third pick
Starting point is 00:55:19 all right you have the third pick who are you're gonna you cool with stuff yeah yeah good lord that's that's already 80 years old of of players you have on your team that fiba line yeah i i good pick that's a good pick okay Is everyone healthy? Yes. Durant's not. He is. Is he healthy?
Starting point is 00:55:40 Yeah, everybody's full show. All right. You can take this, pick, coach. I'm taking Tatum. Okay. I like it a lot. Anthony Edwards and Jason Tatum. All right.
Starting point is 00:55:51 Who's the next oldest guy you guys will take? I'm going to take an injury-riddled big man, Joel and B. Okay. The only reason I didn't take it was I was like, is his kneecap going to pop out or what? Hey, I don't think anybody can guard. Anthony Davis.
Starting point is 00:56:07 I literally took the words out of my mouth. Annie's rested. Bangorang. Okay. We're at Anthony Edwards, Jason Tatum, Anthony Davis. Okay, we're at Braun. Steph. Steff. Embede.
Starting point is 00:56:19 I think the perfect fit there. Would you agree, Reed, is Drew Holiday? I always like Drew Holiday. Yes. You can't go wrong with Drew Holiday. Perfect. Blue is a motherfucker. Okay.
Starting point is 00:56:30 K.D. is sitting there. I like Bam. Wow. I just took Drew over. You like Bam? I like Bam. I like BAM. But KD's sitting there.
Starting point is 00:56:37 Didn't take them. I trust you. We're going to take Kevin Durant with our fourth pick in the starting. There's only one basketball out there, remember. It's a solid pick. Thank you. I don't like our options left, but I think we have to go with Quay Leonard. Okay.
Starting point is 00:56:57 That's a good pick. All right. I respect the pick. Coach, go ahead. We've got Anthony Edwards, Jason Tatum, Kevin Durand. I'm going bam. I need a guy that's going to do to dirty work a little bit. And he can play alongside AD, no problem?
Starting point is 00:57:11 I think so. All right, you've got our five. It's a different game. It's a stretch game there. We're all right. I like the draft concept. What do you think Steve Kerr will make the starting lineup? Won't he just go old heads?
Starting point is 00:57:23 Well, to your point, doesn't he have to go, Steph, LeBron, K.D., Joel, Jason Tatum, those top five names. Isn't that it? I don't think I don't think that's a best spot. I think Steph LeBron, KD are for sure, but then it could be Anthony Davis, could be Anthony Edwards. Yeah. Do you think he'll weigh in, like, anybody that plays with each other in the, like on the same NBA team, like LeBron and Anthony keep them in the same group?
Starting point is 00:57:52 Or do you think these guys are good enough? I think that's smart. Who's rebounding the basketball here? Indeed. Bam. Bam. LeBron's got to play like, he can't try playing point. He's got to play the four.
Starting point is 00:58:06 Yeah. A little point forward maybe. Do we know odds for the hoops? We don't have them published yet. Slovenia did not make it. Greece did. I have a little trivia challenge for you making. So this is a picture of each of the 12 teams qualified.
Starting point is 00:58:22 Okay. Player from each team. Oh, they're only 12 teams, huh? Yep. We got to be minus 300, right? I would say probably minus 400, 500, something along that. All right.
Starting point is 00:58:34 We're minus 390 according to that MGM. Serbia is good, Canada's good, Greece is good, Germany is pretty good. Canada plus 850, Serbia plus 1,000. All right, so we're looking at a picture. We're seeing who I can name. Yep. We've got Australia. Australia's easy.
Starting point is 00:58:49 That's Josh Giddy. And let me be among the few to say, that's a terrific trade for the Chicago Bulls. That's a terrific trade. Couldn't agree more. Couldn't agree more. They had to do something. Caruso's a good defender. I get it. But not for the Bulls.
Starting point is 00:59:06 How old's Caruso? I mean, he... 30. Is he? And he'll be great for O.K.C. He'll be great for OKC. That's great. I think it's a great trade. I was surprised that they got...
Starting point is 00:59:16 I was surprised that trade went through. Yeah. All right. That's giddy. All right. Who's up next? I have no idea who that is. That is Marcellino Huerta. Okay, all right. play for the Lakers.
Starting point is 00:59:27 You feel pretty good about that. Canada. That would be SGA, correct? Right. France. Crown Vic. Crown Vic. How fun is that team going to be?
Starting point is 00:59:37 France is going to have a 7-1-75 front line. And then is that, and then the entire first round of this year's NBA draft. When did France become a jug or not? Those guys didn't even make the team. Over the last 10 years, France just had insane development. Yeah. All right.
Starting point is 00:59:55 So we got Germany here. I don't think he's German, but is that Domas? No, it's Franz Wagner. Got it. Yeah, makes sense. Greece? Janus, the Greek freak. It's right there in the name. Japan. What?
Starting point is 01:00:10 Japan. Japan. He plays for the Lakers. He was drafted by the Wickeme. Rui. Rui. Rui Achimura. All right. Now we're cooking.
Starting point is 01:00:20 I know Macon'll know this guy, our old ACC, Bo from Puerto Rico. Oh, Jose Alvarado. Georgia Tech. Serbia. That is Nicola Yokic. And this one is quite hard. Not to be confused with Nicola Jovich or Nicola Topich. Right.
Starting point is 01:00:39 And then first time qualifiers are relatively new nation, South Sudan. If you get this, I'll give you 40 bucks. Okay. In that case, I'm not going to guess. Wenyan Gabriel. Oh. He went to Kentucky. Yeah, good player.
Starting point is 01:00:54 Yeah. And then Spain. Spain. It just looks like one of those good point guards who comes along every five years. Ruby. Who probably. All dama. Okay. Okay. Great player. And then you know the king. LeBron James. C plus. I'm looking forward to that. Oh, coach. Yeah, C plus. B plus. That was a B plus. B plus. Dude, just their four countries. Just their heads. That was pretty good. Is their legs going to help you?
Starting point is 01:01:29 Come on. That's good stuff. Like I could have done with an NBA uni. I didn't have any NBA uni's there. That would have made it much easier. I'm really looking forward to betting on that. Have you guys had anything you've been betting on in these recent weeks with no football, no basketball? No, I'm out.
Starting point is 01:01:43 I'm done. I have retired. No, seriously. Three. You got more than Jordan, man. This one's going to stick. We talked about. talking gambling on tennis, a few tips for the people.
Starting point is 01:01:59 Here's one. Ensure that the two players playing or the four players playing are actually real people who are actually playing a tennis match, a real tennis match. Okay. These apps, these BetMGMs, a great app, by the way, the best some would say, they could put two names up there. And if you show me four, three in the third set up a break, I am firing. everything into the middle of the table.
Starting point is 01:02:28 But you can't verify that this match is actually being played. Why? Because it's in Thailand? It could be anywhere. Now, if it's a Wimbledon, here's another tip. If you're watching the broadcast, watch a language, watch the commentator speaking a language that you don't know, okay? Because when you're listening to some English speakers
Starting point is 01:02:52 and you may have a couple bucks on Jasmine Paulini to beat Madison Keys, and you start hearing these announcers saying, oh, Paulini is losing her form. Oh, she's looking defeated. She's resigned here in the third set, not literally. She gets down five, two. You start to look at the cash out button. Maybe you hit the cash out button, and you don't believe in the warrior who is Jasmine Paulini,
Starting point is 01:03:20 who comes back to make it five all, and then Madison Keys retires due to injury. Nice little wager cashed out for peanuts, would have won. Cashed out too early. That'll ruin your day. That's on you. Now, you can't find the English feed. You listen to the Spanish broadcasters.
Starting point is 01:03:39 The only word you can understand is ace. And then you start to lock in a little better. You see a little better. Okay. And then plus money. these tennis players are so feeble-minded, I can say that because I am one, momentum turns on a dime, cowboy.
Starting point is 01:03:59 Don't be intimidated by plus 250, plus 300, plus 350. Fire on those. Momentum changes very quickly in these tennis matches. Very much a mental game, okay? And the final one, this is real. If a player's down, if players are up 40 love, okay, you know what that means? You know, one more point they win the game.
Starting point is 01:04:20 If a player's up 40 love, and oh no, 40 15, 40, 30, now Deuce, you think the player who was up 40 loves rattled, right? No, sir, the person who has fought back to Deuce relaxes. They think, oh, I climb the mountaintop. Now I'm going to win the game because I have that psychological advantage. I'm telling you, when you're wasting your life away watching these matches on your phone, just point by point, you're just watching a scoreboard, not even players. the player who was up 40 love and then it goes to Deuce, they win that game. The player
Starting point is 01:04:56 who was up wins that game. 80% of the time because the player who came back to climb the mountain, they relax. Or maybe it's because they're not serving. It can even be a Love 40 situation, Matt. You can be returning. I'm telling you. It's stunning how
Starting point is 01:05:12 often it happens. I appreciate your passion. Yeah. It sucks to be retired. But here's the thing. You got a You got to stick to your guns, man. Yeah. You know, make your own decisions. Don't let some guy on TV.
Starting point is 01:05:25 I know. No, I know. You know what I mean? If I just let, if I just placed a wager and then threw away the telephone, I'd be in business. But I micro-manage these bets and then cash out. I've cashed out what would have ultimately been a winner to jump on the side of the loser. That's next level. Stupidity.
Starting point is 01:05:48 Sorry. Well, C. Long is to blame. He was the one who gave me the gateway drug of, oh, yeah, I just, you know. There's a lot of blaming going on. You're blaming the commentators. You're blaming the players. You're blaming C. Long.
Starting point is 01:06:03 Well, back in the day, C. Long, thanks to him, he was like, hey, yeah, the deal we have, we'll give you $100 a week, have some fun. We'll talk more about gambling on the pod. It was brilliant because then I got addicted. And, you know, I'm not losing money, coach. Let's be clear. I'm only wagering the money that's been a lot of it, okay? I got a family.
Starting point is 01:06:25 I'm not going to be reckless like that. I go to the beach. But I see how much fun it is. I sure do see how much fun it is. I've been riding out my plus money lines. Yeah. You know, so I'll hit a couple of those a week and it'll keep me going, but I'm pretty much even.
Starting point is 01:06:39 The coach is the king of... That means down. The coach is the king of 500 chickens on a plus 550. The coach will fire. Yeah, and it hits, you know, one out of three hit, you're in business. That's what I'm saying. And I leave the phone. I don't even look.
Starting point is 01:06:55 Oh, you said you're retired. Can you still give us a men's and women singles pick for Wimbledon? I think whoever wins that Paulini Navarro match is going to win the whole daggone thing. Shout out Emma Navarro, UVA, Charlott's Philzone. two UVA women yeah Daniel Collins is still pretty impressive man yeah that's really cool I mean think about how many tape at least
Starting point is 01:07:24 a lot of UVA alum or current students in this Olympics man yeah yeah that's that yeah like 12 I think is it 12 that's a lot that's a lot it's pretty cool now now people like you will go on poo poo the revenue sports
Starting point is 01:07:42 but the non revenues we're We pump out Olympians. That's what we do. What do you? Poop. What do? Pooh, don't say that ever again. No, I'm just calling a spade a spade, my friend.
Starting point is 01:07:55 And on the men side, I'll go Yonik's center in part because my wife, Kate, said that our bodies looked alike. And I'm like, you're watching tennis? She was like, yeah, this guy, sinner, you're, you know, both tall, kind of thin. I'm like, yeah. Then she goes, your skin is the same color. I'm looking, okay, a couple white guys. Yeah, for an Italian, he does not look Italian. And then she goes, and you know, muscular.
Starting point is 01:08:27 And I was like, okay, here we go. I know. She was just doing me, just let her, just let me have that. She was doing me. I want you to have, I want you to have that, but I want you to have it for real. I know, I know, no. So what that did for me, I went straight to the garage and did 30 reps on the bench.
Starting point is 01:08:45 Three sets of 10 at about 135 pounds, knocked them out. Isn't it crazy the motivation you can give you? All I need was be gasped up a little bit. Right to the bench. That's awesome. Right to the bench. We'll go center in Paulini
Starting point is 01:09:03 just because I want an emotional hedge against our girl, Emma Navarro. All right, guys, did we cover it? Indeed. Thanks to Sam Houser. Thanks to the Boston Celtics. We got Heath Miller. Great guy. Coming up for you on Friday, the new head coach at St. Ann's Bellfield.
Starting point is 01:09:24 Look out. A sleeping giant of a football program. Juggernaut. Y'all take care.
