Starting point is 00:00:00 These guys are a totally different breed than when I was playing. And I'm like, good God. The size, the speed, the athleticism. And then I start thinking about it. I'm like, you know what? The Jets are kind of intimidating. I love the linebackers they got. Obviously, sauces out there doing his thing.
Starting point is 00:00:17 But then the Niners just come out and it's this methodical approach. I mean, they got big Trent back. Everyone was hyped to have Trent back, especially the fans. He got the biggest ovation when they came out. Good, bro. Yeah. And that dude's a straw that stirs as a drink, bro. No doubt.

It is Chris, Stanford, Steve, and Mac, and we recap the Monday night football game. Chris gave his instant reactions on YouTube the other night, but this is more of an in-depth dive. And Steve was there in-person for Sports Center with Scott Van Pelt.
Starting point is 00:02:27 So he gives us the sights of the sounds from the field. We also talk college football, the best teams and best players that are not playing on Sunday right now. And we check out what we saw from Sunday. Chris, Macon, Stanford, Steve. Steve gives us a couple thoughts from the NFL action this past weekend in week one. We'll be back on Friday with best bets for the weekend and your week to NFL reviews. They call me free. Lo and low.
Starting point is 00:03:19 Philadelphia, PA. Hello. I'm in Philly, guys. I land in Philly. I get into my company car, not to flex. It's a nice, you know, it's not a limo. Nobody wants a real limo anymore. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:03:35 I haven't seen one in a long time. Oh, I took the kids in a limo to watch Virginia basketball play. If Duke ever has the balls to come down here, we might put you in a limo, drive you down on a stretch limo from D.C. to see us. I'll sit behind Duke bench this time. But the whole point is nobody likes limos anymore. I remember it used to be a big deal. like if you were in a limo in the 90s everybody was like that's somebody you know and now it's like if
Starting point is 00:04:02 you're in a limo what a fucking idiot that guy is you could have just got a shorter limo and that's what i'm basically riding around is a shorter limo also known as a sedan two door four door brother and uh the two door would be a coop wouldn't it yeah i don't know they make so sedan's cruising down a 35 mile per hour stretch and the car kind of slows down and there's loud noises outside. And I'm just staring at my phone. And I'm like, you know, I look up after a second and I'm dead stop in the middle of a Trump rally. Oh. Just in the middle of the street, bro.
Starting point is 00:04:43 I was like, I've never seen one in real life. It was kind of thrilling. Yeah. It felt like being undercover or something. I feel like we're not doing our civic duty by watching the debate right now and instead talking about a kids game. I got it on the TiVo. Okay. Good.
Starting point is 00:05:02 DVR. So as soon as I get, well, I don't really, but with the internet and TV being so closely, I mean, I can pull it up on my phone as soon as I get to the hotel. So I don't want to be here all night because I want to get to the debate and hold your comments, you in the chat, you in the, you in the comments. I don't care who you like. I just wanted to tell a story. It was fucking crazy. Thank you. I was in the middle of a rally, just trying to go get a haircut.
Starting point is 00:05:26 You know anything about that, Steve? I do not know anything about that, but that's a good one. Got him. Got me. No, you look good, though, bro. We FaceTime earlier today. You and Scott were in the car. The first thing I want to ask is, how's working with Jason Kelsey?
Starting point is 00:05:43 I have two questions for you back at you. Yeah. Okay. When's the last time you were early for something? let's see probably never probably never i mean all my pro meetings but certainly not this like your dad get mad at you for being late all the time no because i'm not really late like i'm late when it's my business you know and like it's like one of those things where it's like you know who's going to yell at me and i got to do so much fucking work around here it's
Starting point is 00:06:17 incredible. I understand. And, uh, no offense to anybody in the room or elsewhere. I just have to do so much fucking work. So, you know, these games end and I've been reeling ever since. Here's, here's a heap. Here's a heap and now you feel bad. My son came home and we had to test him for COVID today. His head hurt. Nice, Steve. You know, and that's what actually delayed me getting to the airport. Nice. Real nice, Steve. And if you're wondering, Waylon's fine. Exactly. I knew it was. COVID negative. there you go but you could imagine if he was how you might feel right now guys hold on number two take off your hat let's see the hair now a second dog now this ring light's not i mean but this is like
Starting point is 00:07:01 a big city fucking haircut right here that's you know it's gonna need like a shower like a dry you think i don't think you're really an authority on hair no offense i'll withhold comment you don't even wear i mean you don't even wear i mean you don't even show your hair ever. You're always in a hat. Like your hair has to be perfect. If the wind blows, it's like, you're like the Dolphins offense, although they played pretty well the other day.
Starting point is 00:07:26 We'll talk about that today. Leave them wanting more, Chris. All right, back to the original question. Kelsey was awesome. As you can imagine, Chris is kind of a, you know, layup question for you because you knew and you told us what he was going to do and how he was going to
Starting point is 00:07:45 be. And he forgot. got his garment back in his truck. And that's why he did the show in a white shirt that he bought at the mall yesterday afternoon. I did make him laugh because I thought I told him he should have spatted up his shoes. I mean, he's the cleanest spatter ever to play on the offensive line. And I thought he would come out on a spadded. I don't even know what kind of shoes, boots he was rocking. Spatted loafers?
Starting point is 00:08:11 Yeah. He was probably wearing like caterpillar. He was probably wearing like caterpillar boots behind the desk. there but he's got enough money they probably don't ruin the shoes but he's got definitely got enough money to buy i bet kelsey has a pretty late streak not at ESPN because he's at his new job but i think he's late for just about everything uh and and the forgetfulness for getting your garment bag yeah totally relatable to the rest of america and i heard from scott today on the face time that his like very first line was like what did he say it he said he's like my tits are struggling my tis
Starting point is 00:08:46 are struggling. Guys are star, man. There's nobody else you can put in a Buffalo Wild Wings commercial and the plot's just like, hey, what's the plot of commercial? You just sit down next to the Buffalo and you start saying football and that'll do. And they were like, ready break. No doubt. No doubt.
Starting point is 00:09:07 I was in Ann Arbor Thursday. There's a Buffalo Wild Wings across the street. So we went over there to watch the NFL game. And the biggest cutout of Jason and the Bible. are staring me right in the face. And then, you know, two days later, he's in the office last night getting ready. It's like, here we go. I mean, my man is everywhere.
Starting point is 00:09:28 And it's awesome. But all in all, everybody was happy with the show. We had everyone, everyone there. Every player that came out to see him, came over, dapped up him, Ryan, Scott, and swag. Jerry Rice, he's crazy. he's he came over and did like 10 chest bumps to each guy it's like jerry we got we got it you know what it was probably i just saw like um behind the scenes for that commercial i guess they did uh-huh and they had him dan merino and like randy moss and like full pads yeah and i think you probably get the itch
Starting point is 00:10:08 i think he's probably always like that additionally it was really fucking funny to see those guys in pads yeah they don't look at They don't look the way they did when they played. You know what I'm saying? Like somebody has seen my dad in a sport coat and be like, man, he looks like you still play. Well, maybe my dad would look like you could still play in pads. Yes, for sure. Terry does not.
Starting point is 00:10:34 Terry does not. Terry's hair is out of control right now. I was going to text you and your dad, but like, man. I love it. We got to cut it over the ears. No, just like. Yes. I love it.
Starting point is 00:10:46 He looks like. He looks like making. man remember making has it coming over the years yeah making has it coming over the years what did you think about the game i just walked the field um while those guys are on the air and say hello to people i know and like first game of the year i've been on you know three college games already and the NFL just has creatures man like these guys come out and it's just i mean they got the whole plio's work you know with the bands and like fred warner comes out and it's like good god And then you go down the Jets end, it's Quinnin.
Starting point is 00:11:20 Olufashano. Yeah. Like, Jesus, mother, Lord. The size of these guys, 11, the D-N for the jet, Jermaine. Mike. Is Jermaine really big in person? Yes. Yes.
Starting point is 00:11:35 And then I'm like, wait, that's, Mike Williams is huge. And it's like, I mean, and A-Rod's big dude too. And then I'm trying to look. I'm like, is pretty even out here? Yep, there is. That's the little guy over there, baseball hat, throw them all around. And then Kittle and you set, you check come out. And it's just, it's just great.
Starting point is 00:11:58 It's wild, man. It's just these guys are a totally different breed than when I was playing. And I'm like, good God. The size, the speed, the athleticism, the flexibility. These guys are doing before the game to, you know, get everything going. And then I start thinking about, I'm like, you know what? The jets are kind of intimidating. I love the linebackers they got.
Starting point is 00:12:20 Obviously, sauce is out there doing his thing. But then the Niners just come out and it's just methodical approach. I mean, they got big Trent back. Everyone was hyped to have Trent back, especially the fans. He got the biggest ovation when they came out. He should, bro. Yeah. That dude's a straw that serves as a drink, bro.
Starting point is 00:12:39 No doubt. And you could see it. Like, when he came out in his pads, it might have been the first time the guys have seen him since the Super Bowl last year in his pads. there was a right as soon as Warner and those guys came out, I'm like, you know what, this is, it's going to be on tonight. This is going to be a good one because both these teams had to feel out what exactly they had. You know, we've covered the amount of guys that didn't play in the preseason, how that's the norm now. But both these teams, I felt like, you know, there's a bravado about them and they, they're going to go about it the way they want to go about it, you know?
Starting point is 00:13:14 And I thought it was damn impressive the way the Niners ran right down. down their throat. It was really, really impressive how they did that. And then the news with McCaffrey, and then the new guy gets his shine, and he's awesome. I mean, he's slippery. They couldn't bring him down. And that's a damn good tackling Jets team. And they wore them out. They let them, the Jets get their drive. You know, they scored a touchdown. And then just like that, it's just in the coverage. I mean, seeing that in person and how they can't touch you and they are right in your jock the whole freaking game. I did wonder about Garrett Wilson's jersey. It's ginormous.
Starting point is 00:13:58 Wait, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. What are you trying to say? I've never seen that on a receiver. You don't like it? No, I didn't say I don't like it. I just thought it was an extra size too big. I like to lose sleeves. I think he's the coolest-looking football player a week one.
Starting point is 00:14:17 You've seen it. It's just been 30 years since you've seen it. Correct. Like he brought up Dan Marino. He had Dan Marino's jersey on. Yeah. I mean, listen, I think that look should come back. You know how things come back?
Starting point is 00:14:28 Yeah. Bring that look back. If I could go back and play again, I'd wear those sleeves. It's just cool, man. Those are easy to grab. You can't wear those. Yeah, they're easy to grab. Never mind for me.
Starting point is 00:14:37 But, you know, Fred Warner, you talk about Fred Warner. That peanut punch from him, the beginning of the game. It's like you have to, for you at home, it's incredible to look at this guy. But take it for me, a six foot four, 270 pound guy in my prime who could run a little bit and like do some things that, you know, I look back at and say, man, you were pretty fucking athletic or good. This guy is like, it's unimaginable to have that power. Oh. He's like a superhero. He's got super. He, he, he, he, he is walking the line. between being a human being and being flash or one of these motherfuckers in a Marvel movie.
Starting point is 00:15:19 The athletic ability, the body control, the explosiveness with the size. Did you see him? I think it was in the red zone. Getting a piece of Garrett Wilson on crossers. It was like, Garrett Wilson was like, what the fuck? Yeah, no doubt. You know, and he makes you pay that tax. he plays on the edge um i just and campbell is definitely not the guy they had before right until
Starting point is 00:15:50 green law gets back it's going to look a little different but it's like there's no running away from fred warner no there's no scheming things away from fred warner and i think it's going to be interesting to see sorensen the way he forces people in the situations where they have to funnel the ball towards fred or to bosa's side or you know so on and so forth because he's He's a big chess match guy. You could tell watching that game. Yeah. He's going to mess with you pre-snap.
Starting point is 00:16:17 I loved how he had, Aaron wasn't comfortable. You could just see it after the first touchdown drive. And then the big fourth down where they're kind of hanging around. I think it was two scores right around the 50-yard line. And DB has a great job of grabbing Garrett Wilson's arm without getting caught. But Aaron's fundies were awful on that throw. He's doing the fadeaway, throwing the slant. you know, as he's going to Aaron's right,
Starting point is 00:16:44 and Aaron's fade and left. No, the one where he grabbed his hand. They showed the replay. There was no flag. It was just a turnover on downs. But it was. His arm still, hey, Steve, his arm still looks incredible. I mean, the ball on his art on the sideline, you know,
Starting point is 00:17:00 there was a sequence where he hit Garrett Wilson. Yeah. And he pinned the ball between Lenore's arm and Garrett. And it was like, oh, wow. Yeah. And then, you know, you had him moving people with his eyes. you were like that drive there 12 play drive 11 plays otherwise in the first half but that drive right there is enough to give you hope that they can figure it out not every defense is going to be
Starting point is 00:17:22 that way um no and this is week one and this is like a guy who did miss some of the time that he might have been in the building this off season due to a couple different things but i i just i got to be honest like looking at him from a mobility standpoint i don't think it's going to be pretty this year him extending plays like in in off platform awkward situation i'm not saying he can't move but he said it himself like he's like some days i see i feel 40 some days i feel you know and his arm probably feels 25 on on the best day because it looks live as hell but i just think like they got to do a good job of keeping the pocket clean for him we knew it but you could tell in a couple situations you're like he's either working his way back which he might be
Starting point is 00:18:11 or it's just he's a little bit older. You know, me, I'm 39 guys. I don't know how you deal with aging, Steve. Like you're a couple years older than me and Macon, but every year it feels like we age double the next year. You know, it's not like one year, one year, one year. And when you're a football player, it's the same thing. Like, it's actually like sometimes you go off a cliff
Starting point is 00:18:32 and not having seen the guy really get a full day's work in over a season. You know, he can show up on the job day one. and you're like, damn, he looks a lot older. He did not look a lot older from the waist up. You know, there were moments where I was like, oh, maybe mobility will be a problem. But I look at the Jets team and I say, if you can't stop the run, good luck.
Starting point is 00:18:55 You know, I know. That's what it came down to. Tired of this. They're tired of having to. Yep. You look back at the numbers last year, Steve. There were some ugly totals as far as other teams racking up numbers on them in the run game.
Starting point is 00:19:09 But then you look at the amount of carries, like that Dallas game, for instance, it's just attrition. And then they lose guys, including Hassan Reddick, who's good for a couple negatives. Yeah. And it compounds because you can't get off the field.
Starting point is 00:19:22 No. On third down. You don't have rushers. You're not stopping the run. I'm a little concerned about the front if they don't get, you know, Hassan back.
Starting point is 00:19:33 But yeah, this is all about the Niners, right? You're looking at them and you're like, damn, they had all that shit going on in preseason. And they came out playing Yeah, I look at the Niners here. Like, I think they got a home run at guard with that Pony kid. I mean, he was really, really impressive.
Starting point is 00:19:50 And I'm watching him in pre-em. I'm like, if this kid's going to do what I think he. I'm like, he's like, you look at that, you know, you get all offseason to say, all right, I get to prove myself against the Jets front. That's, that's as motivating a spot as you're going to get. And he was damn impressive. You know, Kittle talked about him after the game with us. He was just like, we thought we had some.
Starting point is 00:20:11 something the first couple days we put pads on. He was moving people and he's like, you don't move a lot of our defensive guys. So I'm not ready to say they're better than they were last year. I think that's a cohesion, like, you know, Trent's back. That whole thing. But
Starting point is 00:20:26 I will say, Scott and I were talking after the game, you get Watson now in the mix and he shows what he could do. You're going to get Pierceall back who's a matchup problem. And we haven't even brought up McCaffrey. So, like, how funky Shanahan likes to get with his personnel groups,
Starting point is 00:20:45 they could get really nuts and do stuff we use check and maybe not even have IUC on the field. So I can't wait to see how this, the evolution of this offense goes because you know they keep stacking thing. I got a chance to talk to my old man, Brian Greasy before the game, who I couldn't be happier for quarterback coach now for the Niners. And he's, he's, he just, I can't believe how coachable Brock has been.
Starting point is 00:21:14 And you don't hear that a lot anymore, especially at that position. And they're, they're in a really good spot. They, they know what they're up against. They know what the expectation is. And I think they're even harder on themselves when it comes to an expectation than that fan base is, knowing how close they've been the last couple years. So I was really interested to see how they would come out. You know, we talked last week about how we like the Rams.
Starting point is 00:21:38 we like the idea of the Seahawks. It was a pretty loud statement for the Niners last night. Oh, for sure. It really puts a damper on thinking anybody else is going to win the West. But it is week one, right? Like, you know, it's hard to have any, like, concrete takeaways. There are teams that I think, and we'll talk about some teams later when we get back in the NFL here if we do America's teams and some college football.
Starting point is 00:22:00 But there's some teams that you're like, I have a feeling about who they are. But you need to see more generally with players, with teams. there are some units though i can look at a unit now and be like that unit could use some work and there's no escape for some of these units right like if you've got three new starters on an offensive line somewhere and those guys are struggling that's not typically a group that like all a sudden you know comes together as a year goes along unless you have like a great coach or there's some change in the scheme or the quarterback is different. I think there are some units you can look at in week one and be like,
Starting point is 00:22:45 hey, that unit's going to be trouble. It's up to the coach to figure out how you can work around it. But suffice to say, it's early. We're not going to bury anybody. Certainly not burying the Jets. And the Niners just look like they got the track record. So America's teams, fellas. What do we think?
Starting point is 00:23:03 I have one, and I think it's a one seed, no matter of, what, but it's a change needs to be made. Talk to me about it. The Browns, if they start James Winston. Yeah. Potentially America's team. Like, you got a little taste of it last year with Flacco,
Starting point is 00:23:20 how much of America's team you could be. Exactly. But then you'd show him the door. Can we take a second to talk about this situation, man? I'm not like, I'm not saying the guy. No, I am saying he's shot. I just did the week one thing, but I think there's a physical thing going on here on top of a mental thing, but primarily a physical thing.
Starting point is 00:23:49 Like, when we bring up those statistics and we pulled those up, I've been talking about them for like a week. I want to remind you this. Deshawn Watson sack numbers. Deshawn, first three years as a starter after only seven games played, six games started as a rookie, including playoffs, 169 sacks. 169 sacks Burrow 153 Andrew Luck
Starting point is 00:24:14 108 you think luck was malpractice and yet Deshawn extended some plays but so to Andrew and so to Joe all I'm saying is
Starting point is 00:24:25 you don't know how this guy feels physically right now and the way he sailed some of these balls like not that I care about the guy's career now But as an analyst, I feel like it's over. What could change unless there's an injury we don't know about? I don't know.
Starting point is 00:24:47 I just think of it like watching the Giants hard knocks, right? Or it's all offseason and you're seeing, you know, their pieces with the puzzle. And it's like, I think of the Browns. And it's like, holy shit, we got this here. We got this here. Oh, my God. Our quarterback, when they got them, we're set there. And you're like, we're like, we're good.
Starting point is 00:25:12 We got it. And now you don't know if you have the biggest piece of the puzzle. And the investment and the time in what you were doing. You know, I was talking to Shepdy last night. And we went back to when that happened. It was a bidding war. Atlanta was all in. How about being those guys?
Starting point is 00:25:31 Yeah. That's exactly what I thought. It was Atlanta, New Orleans. Oh, they were in on it. And when there was the number, whatever it was before that, and the Brown said, how about 240? And then it was like, oh, all right. And you know what drives me crazy, though?
Starting point is 00:25:51 There were certain people when it was time to, I mean, like from a football standpoint, there was certainly like a lot of noise off the field that everybody factored in. Some teams didn't care. but as fans like i think everybody thought he still had it and if somebody had been keen on this and said hey this i mean this guy's about to fall apart like look at what just happened and you know maybe it's not a good idea to to hire a guy to play quarterback not just for the reasons of like doing the morally correct thing but also because like if you're pragmatic you think this guy's head's right his head's not right uh so i it the the the trappings of this contract are incredible
Starting point is 00:26:37 dude like and you know with the new possible case coming down today the lawsuit like if there's a suspension you can ultimately get out of this deal now i don't understand this thing perfectly but i hope that if there's a loophole the brown should have to eat this you wanted it you you got it. Like, and you could say it's not fair to the players. It's not, oh, all of a sudden we care about fair? You know what I'm saying? No, great point.
Starting point is 00:27:11 Great point. You know, I think the Browns, shame on you either way, but if you end up being able to recoup some cash and incur some cap penalties down the road, right? Isn't that what it would be? If he's suspended, you know, you have cause to terminate the contract. right that's in the contract yep in that circumstance it's almost like you should just what's the word should be like self amoliation what's that word is that it bacon yeah it's first words
Starting point is 00:27:51 of the podcast zoom's hard Jesus Christ is it amoliation it starts with an eye but yeah emmole emolate emulation emulation self-immolation what is it making i just said it no but can you define it for me for people at home is it an urban dictionary you should set yourself on fire yeah okay you know uh to to to cleanse yourself of what you've done there's no there's no like oh let's get let's take advantage of this loophole and then we can act like nothing ever happened even if the Browns are able to take advantage of a loophole here because it's suddenly the right thing to do. Like, that's going to be the funniest press clipping right there. That's going to be the funniest graphic when they're like, the Cleveland Browns do not condone
Starting point is 00:28:46 a 78th lawsuit. One through 77 was okay. Well, apparently the deal is when he signed it, he had to give them a list of all the accusations in writing. if this accusation was on the list, then the Browns can't do anything about the contract. The NFL can still punish him, but the Browns can't do anything about the contract.
Starting point is 00:29:08 So when the NFL does this, they're going to be like, we don't stand for this shit. Right. And the Browns are going to be like, yep, you know, that's just the way it is. Are they going to fight for the guy? Like, what, are you going to act like you're fighting for the guy, even though you're happy he's suspended?
Starting point is 00:29:23 Because this is a huge mind fuck, dude. I've never seen anything like this. And, you know, a lot of people are like, You're burying the guy, give the guy a chance. Last year was the chance. Yeah. And it didn't go well for him. And I'm not seeing anything much different.
Starting point is 00:29:36 You know, if you'd have seen him come back and I know the defense was damn good. Hats off to Dallas. But the way he missed some of those balls, watching him on the sideline, the mental, the physical, it's all gone. So, I mean, this is a hellhole. Yeah. For Cleveland. And that concludes Steve's installment of. America's Times.
Starting point is 00:30:00 I'll run through five for you, Chris. How about Cleveland with Carson Wentz, though, making? Can I interest you in that? See, I had the Chiefs with Carson Wentz. I know, but I'm saying if Cleveland would pluck, send over a little three for your boy for Carson Wentz. A three? Yeah, they're desperate, bro.
Starting point is 00:30:16 Send over a one. They got James. As a former MVP. They have DTR. They got DTR. No, DTR is a, I mean, DTR, they feel like he's a project. They could really develop him. I understand that.
Starting point is 00:30:29 But you got a really good roster. You did before Injoku got hurt. How about, oh, worse flight, having to fly into Cleveland to work out as a tight end? Like, I read, like, Steve, there should be so few people that want this job that you should be able to fly out to Cleveland and try out for the job. Can you imagine you tell your family like, yeah, I've got to try out with what team?
Starting point is 00:30:55 Don't worry about it. I'll be back. I'll be back in a couple days. I'm going to work for the Brow. You tell your wife, I'm going to go catch passes from this generation's Bill Cosby. Like, it just stains the whole thing,
Starting point is 00:31:13 dude. And I know, like, you know, there's going to be some people in here, like innocent until proven guilty and the whole fucking thing. But come on.
Starting point is 00:31:21 It's a Tuesday night. I can't take it. I'm on this podcast too late not to say it. It's drive me nuts. Didn't you guys think when Dax signed the contract that morning that there was a great chance that he would go out and lay the egg against a really good defense? For sure. It was like that that's the way things are usually written in the end of the script writers. But but he did.
Starting point is 00:31:47 They had like a golden day. They had Tom Brady calling the game. He was, he was, lamb was shredding people. Zeke was hurtling people. It was vintage. Guyton really does look like a pro. We saw that coming. We liked him.
Starting point is 00:32:03 Tyler Smith, still Tyler Smith, like Zach Martin, Zach Martin, like the tight end, Ferguson, Jake Ferguson. Yeah. When he came down on his knee, I was like, oh, there it goes. You know, like, they might not actually be able to compete with just one wide receiver outside. And cooks, I don't, I certainly don't mean to diminish who he is.
Starting point is 00:32:22 I mean, he's valuable, but, you know, that Mike Zimmer defense could be pretty good, though. Not that Carson got tested. I just had issues with the Bronzo line. They were not on the same thing. I thought DeWan Jones was going to be a player. Maybe he is, but it's just Tank Lawrence and Micah Parsons, man. Yeah. Just Tank Lawrence.
Starting point is 00:32:44 Again, it's week one. Okay, America's teams. You got anybody? The Cowboys are a terrific segue into America's teams. I'll start with the University of Memphis Tigers. week one went over North Alabama 40 to nothing. Week two went over Troy, 38 to 17, head coach Ryan Silverfield from Hampton, New.
Starting point is 00:33:07 Hampton, Sydney, you got it, Steve, nailed it. Even with the layup before the show. Well, week three, they're at FSU, and they have a chance to do something epic, which is to put Seminoles at 0 and 3 after suing to get out of their conference. Memphis, there's one. I'm going to roll through these. Are you ready? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:33:27 New York Jets, I was rooting for them like they were my little brother who I wanted to succeed. Maybe it was the Unis because as individuals, maybe not the most likable bunch of fellows. Easy to root for guys like Garrett Wilson, Sauce Gardner, others. But the Jets as a whole, I just wanted them to succeed. And after the first two drives, I was like, oh, fuck, this is like kind of worse than how it started last year if that could be and then as you mentioned the third drive when he wings it to garret and then he looks at the aaron looks at the sideline and smiles like whoa this is fun that was that was kind of cool i was like all right let's go no i know the jets sorry can i interrupt
Starting point is 00:34:11 your americans teams for a yeah to show you cal van oi in looking like stevie wonder in a fucking on a podcast wow that's what would momentarily had me laughing over here it's not funny they broke his orbital but shout out to my boy Kyle Van Hoy for being a true podcaster's podcaster. Yeah, he's showing up. Getting in the booth and sunglasses, bro. By the way, Stephen Wonder, not blind.
Starting point is 00:34:36 They can continue. USF, man, they were right there. I can't imagine being Kalin DeBore in a 14-13 game or a 21-16 game on the night that they named the field after Nick Sabin. The entire Sabin family is there,
Starting point is 00:34:53 and it's week two in South Florida's giving you a run for your money. And then they put up 28 points in the blink of an eye in the last five minutes or so and run away from USF. Not for nothing. USF gave save and trouble. That's fair. That's fair. Ole Miss, the land train's not going to turn down a point spread. 45 and a half week one, they beat firm in 76 nothing.
Starting point is 00:35:21 42 and a half week two, they beat middle Tennessee, 52 to 3. This guy's like, you know, I'm working for RPI back in the day when you cared about strength of schedule and margin of victory, and maybe we will need to care about that this year.
Starting point is 00:35:39 And finally, the Detroit Lions, winners on Sunday night, Honolulu Blue, looking great. I think that first Stafford pick in the end zone is because, Kirby Joseph literally blended in to the end zone, to the backdrop behind the goalposts. It's just, I think these guys could win a million games this year and it would never get old. We get tired of teams who do really well.
Starting point is 00:36:09 I don't think it's possible with this group. Those are on America's teams. It was really nicely done, man. Thanks. We're so back. America is so back. Hey, dog. Do you have teams?
Starting point is 00:36:19 May I add one thing to the Jets? piece. Sure, sure, sure, sure. I have a favorite hokey and his name is Terrod Taylor. And I think if the goal was to win- Live over 47, thank you, Tyrod. I think if, I think if the goal is to win as many games as possible, he could start for a dozen teams this year. I mean, you'd talk about a 12-play drive. He led one of those two for a touchdown there at the end. I know it was 32 to 13 or whatever it was, but that guy's awesome. He's just awesome. He's awesome for gamblers. I nearly let this tweet fly last night. By the way, a week ago, I can't remember if I talked to you guys about this, but I said something about, yeah, I was talking to you. I was talking about how Byron Young looks like
Starting point is 00:37:01 he's really good in traffic. And it's like car crash back there. And then I managed in the same sentence to be like, he reminds me of Jalen Carter. And I meant nothing by it. Okay. And then last night, I almost tweeted, hey, Tyrod's in the game. The live over's got a shot. Yeah. It's like I can't avoid this shit and then i let that tweet fly it and it was like you're having fun at his expense no i'm not um to rod taylor thank you uh okay americans team's Brazilian officials uh american officials in brazil's in brazil's in bruceusage you could hear it in uh buddy's voice he had lost his voice uh my theory is he was out drinking out late you know what happens when you're out at the night club yelling at your side judge and he's over there trying to wrangle the waitress to get another
Starting point is 00:37:53 bottle of whatever it is that officials drink. Any guesses? Um, model. Um, model. Yeah, probably. Yeah, probably. Uh, so I think he lost his voice because of that. There was a guy who popped his Achilles, I think in, um, I don't want to spread rumors, but the guy was looking really rough. And then he just panned away from him you know jordan loves down rightfully so the whole country stops what's doing because this guy's awesome and i'm so glad it wasn't serious but some poor official who's there i don't even know if these guys are getting they have second jobs and one of them pops in achilles in a foreign land and we can't even give him more than 10 seconds of air time you know you got to talk to the tv truck about that one the officials um northern illinois you know this was coming yeah bang ironic the guy's name is
Starting point is 00:38:45 coach hammock because you can never relax when he's around um seriously the motherfucker you just couldn't help but be happy for him um you know his exuberance after the game the emotion the whole thing man and having to you know like i don't watch a ton of college football but just throwing that on at the end with my son and you know hearing biggest upset in school history you know it's a blip on the radar screen that you're like i remember that game but in that it's And DeKalb, DeKalb, Illinois. DeKalb. DeKalb, however those people say it in Illinois, they'll never forget that game.
Starting point is 00:39:26 Ever. They got paid $1.4 million to go beat Rudy's team. DeKalb. And they come off, you know, they're a week off of beating Texas A&M. And, you know, that's, if you're Mike Elko's group, if you're an A&M fan, You're like, at least it was Notre Dame. And then they get beat by NIU. So we'll give it to NIU.
Starting point is 00:39:52 Dylan Stewart fans. You know who I'm talking about, Steve? Yep. If you are a Dylan Stewart fan, you're on the right team. You're on America's team. Because this guy is going to be playing football almost when I'm looking at collecting Social Security, if that's still a thing. Like my son's going to be in college.
Starting point is 00:40:15 This guy's going to be playing football. You know what I mean? He's going to be playing in the 2040s. And it's always wild when you see a guy and you're just like, yeah, no amount of, let's see how he shakes out. He's going to be special. Yeah. Yeah. He's from here.
Starting point is 00:40:31 He's from here. DMV kid, friendship. Just an absolute specimen. What he was able to do. I can't wait to see that D-Line. South Carolina in person next week against LSU's O line, Will Campbell, rumor to be, you know, top five pick, maybe even number one. So that's going to be awesome.
Starting point is 00:40:54 I can't wait to see the game playing. LSU brings a great O line and a really good group of tight ends. And I would expect them to, after seeing what he could do when you're in predictable situations, to go right at him. So we're going to see what he's got against a big boy group. I can't wait to see that match up. Hey, Steve. I don't know if you've had a production meeting yet for game day,
Starting point is 00:41:17 but Saturday will be Mr. Stewart's birthday. Dylan Stewart will turn 18 or 19? 19. Stop it, dude. Stop it. Chris, Jeremiah Smith, the receiver for Ohio State, you know, the new kid that everybody's freaking out about? No, I don't watch Ohio State.
Starting point is 00:41:36 Okay. No offense. Well, he's the number one receiver in the country. He's first. He already has three touchdowns. I should watch him. Ryan Williams, the Alabama receiver, I think he has three touchdowns too. They're 17.
Starting point is 00:41:48 They're 17 years old. Can't even buy Zinn yet. Dylan Stewart just started buying Zinn, and he's better than I ever was at football. I mean, like the guy, like, I saw him doing things. You know, at first you see one of these highlights. I'm like, yeah, well, he just dipped under him. I know. I just, I got the tape right.
Starting point is 00:42:09 I was watching it before. He does it five more times. The way he dipped under the right tackle one time, I was like, oh, my God. I'm like, yeah, he's probably not that big. I Googling him. He's six, six, six. It's like, what? Stupid. You think Cloudy was hyped.
Starting point is 00:42:25 Cool. Get ready for four years from now. And my last America's team, the Cal Bears, going down to Auburn, Alabama, taking care of the Cal Bears. You know, for an early game on the East Coast, you'd think a West Coast team would be half asleep, but they were woke. Oh. You know, they transitioned the ball down the field.
Starting point is 00:42:46 It was honestly, the offense was kind of non-binary. You think run past, they had some kind of in-between looking at plays. And then they controlled the means of production on the ground, fellas. Mm. You know, this team is fucking a lot of fun. And I'm pretty sure Auburn fans weren't real happy to lose to them, you know? They were not. Look at you.
Starting point is 00:43:09 You don't know what to say. to lose your Auburn base. You don't want to laugh too hard at this. I said on Scott's Pod earlier this week, I can't believe I'm saying. I was happy for Cal. I've never said that in my life. I can't stand them. But that's a damn.
Starting point is 00:43:25 I can't remember the last time they had to win this big. It's a brutal place to go play. You mentioned early kick. And they went there. They were a better team for 60 minutes. It was really, really impressive. ACC, baby. It just means less.
Starting point is 00:43:43 Put it on the resume. Yes, sir. Anyways, yeah, I mean, they're one of us. Hashtag one of us. By coastal. By coastal, for sure. Anyways. Let's get into college football, guys.
Starting point is 00:43:59 What do I need to know? You know, I did watch the Colorado game. I watched the Notre Dame game. I put money on Texas side unseen. I was at my kid's soccer game. I was like, yeah. Smart. Michigan, not as good as last year.
Starting point is 00:44:15 Living off last year. I was blown away with Texas. I knew what they had coming in, the personnel they have. Sarka's done an unbelievable job recruiting there. Both their tackles, I really felt like we're up to the challenge. All you hear about is Mason Graham and Grant in the middle. And Chris, if you want it, how creative Sark is, man, in the run game. and I'm sitting there on the sidelines
Starting point is 00:44:43 I don't even know how you drill this but the idea how they're trapping guys and the first guys basically the rapper you know what I'm saying and you leave that guy and then you based a cut off the next guy pull it like that is so hard
Starting point is 00:44:59 to do in such a tight space and how fast it happens and they they didn't lose a step and they did it everywhere everywhere on the field The first drive I thought was really eye-opening because it's been years since we saw a team get multiple third downs on a drive against Michigan. It's just the way they are.
Starting point is 00:45:26 And they have pros on their defense. Will Johnson's up there as a corner. The kid Barham, who's a transfer from Maryland, is built like a freak. And he's a stud. Everybody, there's some Michigan people thought. thought he might be the best player on the defense. And I mentioned the two guys up front. So they were going in based on, they could hang around this game.
Starting point is 00:45:48 They know they don't have quarterback play up to the caliber. They've had the last couple years with McCarthy. They've got, you know, receivers to fill in for. They still have a great tight end in Loveland. But Texas just came out and gave it to him no matter what. I thought yours was really, really motivated and smart in how he went about his approach. Big tight end helm was huge. him on multiple third downs and in the end zone for that first touchdown.
Starting point is 00:46:15 So this was this was more to me about Texas. Taking the opportunity, we talked about trying to win on the road all the time. Last year being there for the Bama game was as impressive as anything I've seen. And then just come out. I mean, that game was over, over at half. And we got, they got some months. They got to play Georgia and Oklahoma of back-to-back weeks coming up here to last week of September and the first week of October. so that's going to be uh that'll be that'll be a lot of fun to see uh and those i'll tell you right now
Starting point is 00:46:46 those texas road whites in person they're incredible they're yeah dude they're such a nice uniform oh my lord gorgeous gorgeous for sure i mean uh talking about nice uniforms there were a couple good matchups this weekend make do you have the favorite college uh matchup uh if if kese state Tulane was this week then that was it Tulane. Yeah, that was it. Incredible. Incredible. Incredible. Illinois had a nice.
Starting point is 00:47:17 Yeah, I can remember who they played. Kansas. Kansas. Too much orange. Yeah, it was, no, I mean, Illinois looks good, but it was just not quite right. Yeah, I agree with you. Does Wisconsin have a shot? That's, what I'm about to dive into is just their personnel. It's really interesting to hear Coach Saven
Starting point is 00:47:37 talk about fickle as a coach as a defensive coordinator and Sabin was talking about how in that playoff game you know Cincinnati had NFL guys on the D line and in the back end you know sauce was there and a couple guys that are are in the league now
Starting point is 00:47:53 in the D line and they gave, he admitted they gave us fits. Now he thinks the world of fickle as a defensive mind I look at the opportunity Wisconsin has if they have the person to hold up. Alabama's offensive lines in shambles.
Starting point is 00:48:10 Procter got hurt before the first game in warm-ups. He came out in a sling. They said no surgery. I'm not sure if he's going to be back. Then they lost the tackle Pritchett that came in for him. They moved Booker, who was the best guard in America in my eyes, and had to play him at tackle. And now you're going on the road in a crazy environment,
Starting point is 00:48:28 which is their biggest home game they've had in years. So Wisconsin has not been impressive. They should have lost the Western Michigan. and a punt hit a kid in the back of the shoulder. You know, the first, I think it was Thursday night or Friday night. I forgot which one. But they were fortunate to pounce on that. They have Van Dyke from Miami.
Starting point is 00:48:51 So it's about, I haven't gotten into the defensive personnel for Wisconsin yet. But that's a lot of points, man. Is it up to 16, I think? Now, you know, make it touch on it with how explosive they. could be scoring, you know, those touchdowns so late in the fourth quarter in a tight game after fumble and a snap going in. Milrow looks better. He's so freaking good as a runner.
Starting point is 00:49:22 But can Wisconsin make them one-dimensional? Can they take that run game away? And that's where I was thinking Pickle might be able to do is make them a one-dimensional team and have to throw the ball, which is what you're going to have to do against Milro. because if they get the quarterback run game, they got running backs, they got speed on the perimeter. It's a dangerous thing for Wisconsin because I think Alabama's defense
Starting point is 00:49:44 is super, super legit. So that's to me what it comes down to is Wisconsin's defense against the Bama offensive line. Steve, can you comp this Tennessee quarterback, Mr. Nico, to somebody for people who haven't watched them play, Tennessee beat NC State by 41? Hand up. I mean, he's played, he has,
Starting point is 00:50:05 He has three starts. The stats are astounding. He has the littlest ankles I've ever seen. Maybe skinnier than Jane Daniels. But not, not, I'll tell you what's really stood out to me, making is I was blown away going back and watching Sam Bradford as a youngster in college. I couldn't believe how accurate he was. And Sam had a little, I would say a little,
Starting point is 00:50:35 unorthodox throwing motion. And Iamaliava, his accuracy in these first, I mean, what was last, last week it was a not a great team. But I mean, they played against an Iowa defense. Say what you want. Iowa can still play defense. In the bowl game, he ran three, and he threw a couple. And then he comes out and NC State's a team that prides themselves on defense.
Starting point is 00:51:00 His accuracy is what has been astounding to me. And I'm super fired up to see what Tennessee brings to the table. They got a road trip coming up to Norman. They have to go to Athens later in the year. So they have it all laid out in front of them. I also was thinking about a possible SEC matchup that was a little off the radar, but they were the two most impressive teams this past week. Chris, how would you do with Tennessee Orange and Texas burnt orange?
Starting point is 00:51:32 That would be a struggle, as much I love the color. Yeah, right? Yeah, no question. It was like Virginia, it was like Virginia, Florida at the Orange Bowl. You know, by the way, we were in an orange bowl. Steve and I were talking about that before the show started for a while. Which part? The entire 2019 season, we had a lot of time to talk before the show started.
Starting point is 00:51:58 Yeah, it's like how long I was waiting for my co-host to speak in this podcast. I called him earlier. I said, yeah, what kind of topics do you like today's? Steve lost his bets I said did you watch any game Sunday he was like yeah I mean Patriots and maybe the Giants you do this for a living sort of
Starting point is 00:52:23 proceeded to list the nine games I watched I'll quiz you on it you didn't thank you for a reminder before you go into the picks can I say something sure your social team could blow it out their ass I agree. I agree. I agree.
Starting point is 00:52:40 They got to know my own underwent. It took me a year. It took me a year to figure out who won last year. And you know what? It was me. I won. And we're not even through the 4 o'clock games. And somebody said to me, hey, having a rough day.
Starting point is 00:52:55 I'm like, what are you talking about? You're like, you're all in 4 on green light. I'm like, those bastards just couldn't hit send fast enough. What did you like about the graphic? You could have waited to see if I went 0 and 5. You had to count down at it. Me and May. Hey, me and make, I mean, maybe you were just reeling.
Starting point is 00:53:17 Maybe you sustained a cutting injury from being around these two sharps. And you just weren't feeling right because Macon was just this close to 5 and 0, pushed twice. I was a point away from 5 and 0. Come on. Tennessee was the best pick of the weekend. It was, bro. That's karma for you taking it from me. That's God's plan.
Starting point is 00:53:37 Steve, I have a different question. I didn't know the Giants were going to wear those uniforms. Shout out to Drizzy. That's God's plan. Everyone knew they were wearing those uniforms. I have a different question about one of your picks. Did anyone in your life text you at halftime of Clemson App State? No.
Starting point is 00:53:57 Steve gave out Clemson App State under on Game Day, which was 53.5. and the total it hit 69 at the break. Yep. And I was so, what's the word? It cost me a three and a day, just a, just a. Yeah, four and two on the year. I'm just saying, it was so, I don't know, nauseating that I couldn't even, I couldn't text you to give you.
Starting point is 00:54:23 I'd rather lose that way than have the Titan Sunday. It was brutal. That was way worse. Now you go, Macon. you put the Jets in the Super Bowl not as bad as Steve put in the Falcons in the Super Bowl. Whoa, there's one worse. Who's that?
Starting point is 00:54:42 Nate has the Browns winning. Yeah, no shit, but Nate's just trolling with that. Oh, okay. I can't, there's no way Nate really believes that. I think he does. He said it's part of the plan. He said, Dr. Fax says, part of the plan to have him go out there and look bad
Starting point is 00:55:00 so they can justify benching him. And that's then when they make their Super Bowl run. There was a point during the games on Friday or on Sunday where I'm sitting there and the Broncos have like a second quarter lead. Nate before the season made some relatively significant Broncos 9 and 0 bet. Okay. Nate turns to me during the game and goes, yo, if the Broncos go nine and no do i get my money right then
Starting point is 00:55:36 or do they wait to the end of the season he's dead serious oh oh that's kind of fucked up you wait to the end of season i'm like bro you're not going to worry about that so uh let's talk about without just dump it on steve here make jesus i did that was his first answer i said what do you got
Starting point is 00:56:01 for the show tonight you like any football topics you go Steve lost all his bats. I'm like, all right. We're seven, one, and two over here combined. You and Lee. Over here. Steve's the expert. How did you get pushes?
Starting point is 00:56:16 Okay, Steve, let me explain this to you, professional gambler. If a line is, say, six points and then one team beats another by six points, you dumb. I thought we all at half points. That's a push. Yeah. I know that. Sorry. All right.
Starting point is 00:56:30 What was it? Seahawks Broncos? Yeah. That was one, and then Bill's cards. So what did you guys like this Sunday? Are you going to defend the Atlanta Falcons your Super Bowl team or no? Yes, Steve, you got to fix the Falcons. Boom, do it.
Starting point is 00:56:49 Ready? Like, they just brought you in as a consultant. I'm Arthur Blank. Steve, saw you on Midnight Sports Center and on the game day special every week. Greenlight pod. You know ball. Maybe the Steelers are really good. now we're talking so 16 and 1 is what you're saying
Starting point is 00:57:08 I do think that Justin Fields needs to start this week and I'm biased because thought that going into week one me too but he's got to start I mean you know there there was a positive vibe about that team going on the road to win down there it's a loud place there's like although Pittsburgh had Atlanta going on the damn silent count that's some wild shit they've done it and they do it everywhere yeah uh steel city mafia they will show up real in st louis i mean for sure in st louis they took over the stadium we were really bad one year and we went on silent count packers did it to us too but like for them to go down there as a team and get that win and for justin i thought the best thing about
Starting point is 00:57:53 justin guys was before the half and the game stole three points before the half stole three points at the end of the game. They didn't let him take a lot of shots, but when they did, he was on the money. That ball on the left sideline to Pickens that came back, the OPI, make, that was the thing of beauty. Just give this guy some time, man. Do you think Boswell, like, went over to Mr. Koo after the game and said, like, yeah, fuck you. I could kick in domes all day long, too. Probably. Like, yeah, like, he kind of looks at him like. That's a picker shit right there. For sure. Like, you know, you're white collar. I'm blue collar. Yeah. There might be a kind of like, they might stuff inside kickers into lockers at like the Pro Bowl.
Starting point is 00:58:36 You know? I only draft indoor kickers in fantasy where you want to know Chris with the most points in the league. I don't know if you. I am. Yeah, I scored 135 points beat Vanguard Industries. Everything's not a punchline where, you know, me and Steve are at the end of it. Yeah. Sometimes I'm just great at things like fantasy football.
Starting point is 00:58:57 Um, week one takeaway. Yeah. I don't think I was happier for anybody in the league more than I was happy for J.K. Dobbins. Yeah. I mean, everybody has the whatever it was for Rogers, 610 days. I think it's even more for him since he played a full game. And I'm not saying, I'm not changing a picker.
Starting point is 00:59:21 I didn't have him going to the playoffs. I don't think anybody does. But to see the Chargers do it. And I know the Raiders, the expectations are not hot. But to see what the Chargers did and how they did it, they are a pain in the ass. The rest, like, you're going to have to line up for 60, and it's going to be mall ball, man. He made the red head of detackle, the fullback. He caught a pass.
Starting point is 00:59:45 Yeah, it was sad. It's, they're going to be a handful. Now, they don't have, you know, play. I mean, McCocky's their guy on the, I think he's super elusive. And Quentin Johnson caught some passes. So Herbert's going to be, I'm not saying he loves it, but he's got a lot less on his plate if they're going to be able to run the ball. And to see how they did it with the Gus Bus for 11 for only 26. And then J.K. pop that one.
Starting point is 01:00:14 Like I said, it's just ultra, it's back to what Harbaugh did for Stanford days, the beginning of his Niners days. He's going to make you line up. He's going to make you play in a phone booth. And that's going to be a problem because not a lot of teams are going to want. want you can't prep for it because you're not going to practice for it and you're not going to use your live time for all that but that's that's a pain in the butt uh so that that was i was super happy for jes an awesome dude and he was i thought he was you know tops in the league when he was healthy now you know a couple injuries later it was just really really cool to see so yeah i that was
Starting point is 01:00:47 that was a really i didn't i thought that game was a toss up but to see the chargers and again the way they did it was really really cool i just think it's crazy when you install all a culture and it's not just about this i think when um the raiders thumped them and rub their face in the dog shit stepbrother's style it was like east and stick right um but the way they beat up on those guys that game it wouldn't matter who was playing quarterback they just took their soul yep and uh you know to like to think about months later to show up and beat that team handily yeah You know, not handily, but, but, you know, they, they finished that game and they dictated the terms. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:01:31 And, and, and I also thought, you know, like the Joe Alt thing, well, I don't want to read too much in him blocking Max Kraud. Like that he gave up no pressures to Max Crosby and Slaps. I don't like that being used for anti-Crosby fodder, even unintentionally if it's like bigging up Joe Alt. Because like, as you know, and I know, if the ball is getting out, you know, sometimes you can't get there. but I will say this in watching those 11 snaps, that's a pro tackle. Oh, he can play. He looks the part.
Starting point is 01:02:00 You know, his feet looked better than I thought his feet would look at the pro level. Like, you know, I just wasn't sure being such a big body. But he looks like a dancing bear out there. So that's a real positive for them and lad look good, right? Yeah. I didn't get a close look at him, but watched all back. And, yeah, Dobbins, congrats to him. I mean, like, you see him talking after the game.
Starting point is 01:02:24 You had to feel good for him. And, Chris, you know, like, from experience, there's nothing more than you hated when you keep seeing those tight ends and those ages, whether they're motioning to you, motion away, then you don't know where there are. Your head's out of swivel. All right, what the hell is my first step going to be? That shit's real, man. And I know you guys don't like that on the edge, and it's a mind fuck.
Starting point is 01:02:45 It really is. And they use it like nobody else. No, I agree with you. It's like, it's window dressing. it's a different kind of window dressing like you know it's window dressing that affects the front like sometimes we'd see a jet motion whizz by and we're like well not my problem but you can change the picture for us too and you know when you are playing a greg roman outfit like your antenna's got to be up for everything and you know for a lot of things but like now i can imagine playing harball on greg roman
Starting point is 01:03:14 which I did twice a year for a stretch and thinking about having like a truly elite quarterback back there. And I know some people take issue with that. But the guys never lost the game where the team scored under 20 points unless I totally botched that or read the wrong stat. It's hard now. You know, you never know what you're reading online. But I think that was a legit stat I heard. Regular season? Regular season.
Starting point is 01:03:40 Okay, yeah, because the Jags come back, right? Yeah, Jags come back for sure. Okay. So the defense gives up under 20 points. He's undefeated, though. So, I mean, the guy can play. I'm excited to see him with a real coach. Hey, permission granted to say that we're happy for Gerard Mayo, you know,
Starting point is 01:04:00 really good win in week one. But CINC, unfocused, undisciplined, lack of a plan. Like, it wasn't, it wasn't dimensional. at all it's two years in a row week one lay an egg it's every year they're gonna be able to it feels like every year it's crazy you can't mess around with they actually they actually looked better making this year ironically than they did at the beginning of last year and that's not like to say it's like a sign of progress that stunk yeah you know what stunk about is you come to the game and like new england's gonna be ready to play man you know like definitely give mayo as you pointed out some
Starting point is 01:04:41 love like that team played like they knew how to training camp like they it looks like they ran a great camp and he put people in the right positions i mean like right down to saying hey we're going to try to win some games with jacobi like i can rest may and get him ready to play when he's ready to play without without sacrificing being competitive and winning like this team's going to win some games that's not an overreaction i don't mean they're going to win nine 10 but you know total was four and a half i think that's looks a little disrespectful coming out of there, right? Because what they did in that game is they said, hey, we're going to get 13 big and we're just going to pound the ball and make you tackle our guys
Starting point is 01:05:21 with your little guys. And to play a team that knows exactly who they are at this moment, that's not who they're going to be a year or two. But Gerraub Mayo knows who they are right now and is like, we ain't going to be fancy. We're just trying to win fucking football games. And that was very Bill. Also in that game, make Keon White. He's going to be one of the better players in that division period. Yeah. Yeah, no turnovers for the pads, 10 minute advantage and time of possession. And Sincet on the other side, who knows when they knew that Jamar felt okay about playing? And Jamar didn't play poorly, but there's just so much uncertainty of whether or not you're going with, without Chase and Higgins, backfield that doesn't include mix in, uncertainty with Joe's
Starting point is 01:06:07 wrist. I mean, yeah, don't feel great about the AFC North Pick. at the moment i don't i don't i don't i don't expect higgins back either you don't think he's come back no no like this week no this week i'm like geez did i not what i'm saying you're going to kansas city like it's no i mean this is this is i mean but you also have to remember this is the same team that was beating kansas city last year at the end of that game and they had um you know the backup who isn't amazing we fall in love with these guys for three months at a time and i'm talking about quarterbacks here and then we're over him and we just forget him like i forgot the guy's name jake brownie his
Starting point is 01:06:46 girlfriend was in the suite he was he played pretty well anyways they they were up in that game you know i think if you're lew you didn't have your best day and ira ruin didn't have his best day um and i think the front steve i don't think the front got bullied i don't think the front got bullied at all i think it was just persistent in a way that like the jets got you know eventually it was like we just can't stop the run anymore more. Jets got bullied worse than them. The front there was fine, really. It was they just couldn't make tackles in key spots.
Starting point is 01:07:20 And then on top of that, you know, your offense thing get going. So I give credit to the Bengals, but the, I mean, I give credit to the Patriots, but I think a lot of stuff is fixable for the Bengals. Totally. Totally. I agree. Because we know, like, listen, I put my hand on this hot stove last year. I'm just not going to do it. There might be people that are saying, hey, dude, be real about this fucking team you're giving that you're treating them with kid gloves no i mean it is what it is like this team has a pattern of behavior and they're following that pattern and actually um if they can all get on the same page having mike gaseki i mean there was a a moment there if they tie that game in seven they win it correct i was i was going to say the
Starting point is 01:08:04 same thing and dougar played great you know dougar made the big play he got depth on that crosser you know, two, two plays before Irwin, I think he's got to hit that Irwin throw. I know it's not something that like people are nitpicking about, but like this, hey, I know you're counting, you're off the wagon, I'm circling the wagons, you're off the wagon, Josh Allen's second best quarterback in the NFL. Okay.
Starting point is 01:08:29 Burrow to where? Oh, Burrow has always been three to me if he's healthy and he's right. Burroughs three to me. Four? Now, now that could change in a couple weeks because it's been a while since I've seen a true healthy borough for a while. But I don't want to take anything away from a guy that went to the damn Super Bowl, you know, and it wasn't one of those, like he was on the right team, like they beat Mahomes, you know,
Starting point is 01:08:52 like how many other guys pulled the sword out of the stone, man? Like, he's done it. There's no question in my mind that he's the top three to five quarterback. I mean, like, what are we doing? There was a time last year or two years ago where we were like, is Mahomes the guy anymore? Get bent, dude. How are you going to have the audacity to do that and then vote him off the island now? I think the team needs a little time, as they always do.
Starting point is 01:09:13 They are like not mourning people. You know, I'm not a morning person, you know, and it's kind of fucked up. The society looks down upon me because I can't open my eyes at 7.30 in the morning, but I can work at 2 a.m. wide awake and you guys are sleeping. Why is that? That's not fair to me. Bengals just, the alarm clock's got to go off. Yep.
Starting point is 01:09:34 You know, they're better in late in the season and in the playoffs. That team, if they can get to the playoffs, will be dangerous. it's week one. By the way, real quick, because we got a minute or two left when we get out of here. I thought Jaden Daniels, although he missed some balls,
Starting point is 01:09:52 it's clear to me that he's got the most poise out of the guys right now, and he's the most pro-ready. That's not a high hurdle to clear because we all saw Chicago work in progress there. Turns out that you can't put people in the Hall of Fame in preseason, and you can't call people,
Starting point is 01:10:11 week one. Like I it's all the same to me. It's like preseason week one we need time. But Jay and Daniels you know just really decisive about when to tuck and run I thought got to learn to slide protect himself. We don't need another Washington quarterback getting hurt. But he's got that kind of like RG3 slender build that we've talked about and he covers a lot of ground when he takes off. And I just thought like he didn't he wasn't squirrelly in the pocket. I had that feeling that he was like, even if he missed throws and he missed McLaren, it's 16 to 7 coming out of the half, he's got McLaren. Yeah. You know, those guys are singled up outside. He just missed it. It wasn't like, and you look around the league, there are all types of veterans missing throws right now. And I'm not making excuses,
Starting point is 01:10:59 but what I am saying is he's probably the most pro ready quarterback right now. Like, I think he knows what he's doing. And this was from Kyle Dvorchek on Twitter. Some optimistic data from PFF on Jaden Daniels debut credited with an allowed pressure on 9.1% of dropbacks, which would have been just 29th highest rate last year. So they got the ball out. You know, so that means he's in good hands. Like Cliff's going to take care of him, right? And 16.7% pressure to sack rate would have been 13th best. Only fled a clean pocket one out of 20%. 22 possible times. I love that.
Starting point is 01:11:39 Show me the throws as they, he's going to make these throws. But I think he's poised at the very least. The other thing I wanted to talk about was the Miami Jacksonville game. That was one game I didn't get a close look at. I thought in all honest, the Miami's resolve was impressive, you know, talking about what happened before the game,
Starting point is 01:12:01 just being able to show up and play. That's a game they lose last year. And Mike McDaniels, said that. To his credit, he talked about, like, last year's team loses that game. Now, I don't know if it's just the addition of Callais Campbell. I don't know if it's having certain veteran presences that he kind of alluded to having, but Callais still looks like he can play, blew up a boot early, TFL, the whole thing. The defense in the second half really came to play. Anthony Weaver deserves a lot of credit for the way he got them to play. Jalen Phillips is exactly
Starting point is 01:12:33 who we think he's going to be. If he can just stay. healthy. I thought Agba's getting more burn. I don't know if him and Fangio had a spat or something, but it was like he was a player and then you didn't hear from him. He played big down the stretch. Here's what I noticed,
Starting point is 01:12:50 man. That Brian Thomas Jr. guy, I mean, he drew OPI going against Jalen Ramsey. The throw of the sun, one of throws a Sunday. The throw of the Sunday was Anthony Richardson. But the best touchdown throwing like in the red or the high red,
Starting point is 01:13:05 find me a better throw than than Trevor Lawrence's throw to Brian Thomas Jr. He threw that with confidence. And if Jacksonville could put together a fucking full game, they're a pretty good team. But in the second half, they go four three and outs. The one drives a thing of beauty. Tank Biggsby drive. That's a tank Bigsby drive. And he Tanner Hudson did.
Starting point is 01:13:27 They gave it to the E.N. He Tanner Hudson did it. We saw more tank Biggsby. You know, that was his drive, Doug. Javan Holland changed that game. That's 24 to 7 if he doesn't force that fumble. That game's over if he doesn't force the fumble. And it's a field goal game.
Starting point is 01:13:43 It's one play. I don't know, man. I just one more thing about that game, and I want to give credit to Dolphins because they had the resolve. They came out. They were sloppy, and not for nothing. They've got two running backs, H.N. and Mostert, who haven't practiced, and you get ready to play the bills who are dinged up.
Starting point is 01:14:03 Like Terran Johnson's on IR. might go on IR. He's going to miss this week and they're speculating he could be on IR. Like, that's a big deal. They could really get after these guys in the secondary. But I want to give credit to Jacksonville's defense, guys. Ryan Nielsen had those DVs ready to play. And there were some, like, bad-ish matchups.
Starting point is 01:14:25 Like, they weren't afraid to man up with Darby on Tyree Hill. You know, and to their credit and maybe, like, a little bit of concern for Miami is they. They didn't get that vertical passing game, like the intermediate stuff going at the same click. They had it going last year. I'm not moving the goalposts. If they can run the football and manage the game, that's great. If they hit on their two shots a game, that's great too. That's what they did.
Starting point is 01:14:50 Took two shots in second half, backed up. Each shot set the other one up, you know. So I look at that team, Miami, and I'm like, that was a big toughness win for them. They didn't play perfect, but they came together and found a, way to win but Ryan Nielsen had the back end playing a lot better. They rallied and tackled. And one last thing was shout this guy out. Trayvon Walker, one of the most impressive sacks that I saw on the weekend. That's good. That's good. He's very valuable. Treyvon Walker was like actually a pretty good game. That's good to see. It's fun to see Armstead in that uniform. That was an
Starting point is 01:15:33 interesting game. I felt like it was the sleepiest game. We didn't pay enough attention to it on the Monday show. And I feel like a lot of people were glued to Caleb Williams or wherever else they were. But I thought that was pretty. I'm looking forward to Thursday. Yeah. That's going to be interesting. For sure. All right, guys.
Starting point is 01:15:51 That's the end of it. Not a minute too soon. Hey, Steve, if Columbia, South Carolina falls into a sinkhole, will you come to Charlottesville for Maryland to Virginia. Sure. What do you call you a dumb motherfucker earlier?
Starting point is 01:16:08 You coming down to see him? He called you a dumb motherfucker. I don't. We'll run back the tape. I wouldn't do that to Steve. You guys take care.
