Starting point is 00:03:58 where Sophie, a local resident, keeps coming across conundrums that need to be solved and you'll meet Sophie in this story tonight and let's begin crisp December morning a young woman named Katie stepped off a train and onto the platform of Sleep Cove Station she smiled as she pulled her soft wooden scarf a little tighter around her neck relishing the cozy embrace, it provided against the gentle chill. A friend had told her about the quaint seaside village of Slepcove.
Starting point is 00:04:58 His Christmas market was one of the best in England. As Katie didn't have any university classes that day, She decided to visit the festive market to see how amazing it was. Katie walked out of the station and along the street to the heart of the village. As she got closer, she heard the gentle hum of cheerful conversations and the melodic nose of a brass band played. traditional carols. Katie reached the market and took in the rows of decorated stores, each one offering a unique array of festive delights. Some displayed hand-crafted ornaments and
Starting point is 00:06:07 decorations offered steaming cups of mold wine and hot chocolate, perfect, for warming up chilly hands. Katie wandered through the market. The sound of laughter drew her attention to a stall where children were gathered, eagerly waiting their turn to decorate their own Christmas bubbles. Their faces were alight with joy and concentration
Starting point is 00:06:49 as they carefully applied glitter and paint to the delicate spheres. Katie smiled at their look of happiness on each child's face. The scent of pine needles filled the air, and Katie noticed a nearby stall, where a delight in a delight. array of small potted Christmas trees stood proudly on display. The delightful scent reminded her of the many times she had visited local farms with her her parents to select the perfect tree.
Starting point is 00:07:46 The looking woman in her early 50s with rosy cheeks. and a warm smile stood behind the stall. Engaged in conversation with a customer, Katie moved closer to the stall, wondering if she should buy a tree. But which one, they were all beautiful. She moved along the stalls, her attention going from one tree, to another as she moved sideways. She suddenly bumped into someone, startled, she knocked away from the trees, an apology already
Starting point is 00:08:39 forming on her lips, those of a young man, likely around her age, who seemed equally equally surprised by their unintentional collision. I'm so sorry, Katie exclaimed, her cheeks flushing with embarrassment. I was too busy, admiring the trees to watch where I was going. Man's eyes crinkled at the corners as a warm smile spread across his face. No need to apologize. he assured her, I was just as captivated by them myself. Katie returned his smile, grateful for his understanding.
Starting point is 00:09:46 Her gaze lingered on him. It didn't escape her notice that the man was handsome. Very handsome indeed. She blinked and quickly looked away In case her expression Had given her thoughts away She pointed to the trees And said
Starting point is 00:10:15 I can't seem to decide Which one I like best For my student accommodation To brighten my room up I won't be staying there for Christmas I'll be going home to my parents. They've already bought a tree.
Starting point is 00:10:40 My mum's showed me a photo of it the other day. It's huge. She's put a star on it. One I made when I was six. It's a bit wonky now, but mum loves it.
Starting point is 00:11:00 She pressed her lips together to stop her flow of words. The poor man. She was sure he didn't need to hear about her life. In so much detail, smiled again. He really did have a lovely smile. He explained that he was buying a tree for his student accommodation too. He said, I'll also be going home for Christmas,
Starting point is 00:11:37 but I wanted to add some festive cheer to my room and one of these trees would be perfect Katie asked which university he went to and when he answered her she smiled and said she was attending the same one small world he mused what are you studying if you don't mind me asking the veterinary medicine
Starting point is 00:12:13 Katie replied Her eyes lighting up as she spoke of her chosen field I've always loved animals Ever since I was young How about you? What are you studying? I'm planning on being a teacher He replied
Starting point is 00:12:35 Kindly woman Behind the counter said A teacher Excellent choice Sorry, I didn't mean to eavesdrop, but I overheard the last part of your conversation. I'm a teacher myself at their local primary school, and I'm running this stall to raise money for the school at the market. Back to business.
Starting point is 00:13:09 Have you seen a tree you'd like to buy? Katie confirmed she had and pointed to a tree. The man pointed to his tree too. Would you like to take the trees with you now? Or you can leave them behind the counter to collect them later. If that suits you better, Katie said she'd like to leave it behind the counter. The young man said he would too, when replied,
Starting point is 00:13:50 I'm Sophie by the way, and I'm helping out on many stories. today. So if you come back later, just let whoever is here know that I've put your trees aside for you. If it's okay, can I take your names and I'll pop them on your trees? Katie gave her name and the young man gave his. He was called James. Sophie quickly jotted down their names. On separate labels, affixing them to the respective trees with care. There we go, she said. All set for you to collect later. The trees were paid for, and thanks were given to Sophie.
Starting point is 00:14:50 Katie and James stepped away from the counter, Katie smiled and said. It was nice to meet you, James. I hope you enjoy the market. James returned her smile. Nice to meet you too, Katie. He hesitated for a moment, nervously through his hair. I was wondering if you might be able to help me with something if you don't mind. Katie replied,
Starting point is 00:15:30 Of course, what can I help? help you with, James let out a sheepish chuckle. When I need to buy Christmas presents for my three sisters, at getting them something they like, has become a bit of a family joke. He shrugged, a hint of embarrassment, coloring his cheeks. I was hoping you might help me to choose better presents. But please don't feel like you have to. I don't want to ambush your time at the market, blossomed in Katie's chest,
Starting point is 00:16:23 at the thought of spending more time with James. She said, I would love to help you. I have a few presents to buy as well. We can explore the market together, washed over James's features and he grinned would be fantastic thank you so much
Starting point is 00:16:54 with a shared sense of purpose Katie and James set off towards the bustling stalls the cheerful sounds of the market enveloping them Katie asked James for more details about his sister's
Starting point is 00:17:19 interested in. James proceeded to talk about his sisters, and it was clear from the warmth in his eyes that he adored them, even if they did make fun of his present buying skills. Katie nodded as she listened, her glance, going to the stalls they passed, looking for the perfect gifts, for James's sisters.
Starting point is 00:17:56 It didn't take Katie long to find possible presence including a leather-bound journal and vintage bookmarks for James's older sister art supplies for the middle sister
Starting point is 00:18:14 and glittering starshoek earrings for the youngest sister James was impressed with Katie's choices and said, You're very good at this. I'm glad we bumped into each other, you bumped into me. Katie laughed,
Starting point is 00:18:42 me too, as they continued their journey through the market. Katie and James chatted easily, conversation flowing from one topic to another, They stopped at various stalls, marvelling at the intricate handmade items on display. To one stall, Katie picked up a delicate glass ornament for a tree, its surface, etched with a detailed snowflake pattern. This is stunning, she said, holding it up. for James to see, and in closer, his shoulder brushing against hers, as he examined the ornament.
Starting point is 00:19:44 It really is, he agreed, he turned to look at Katie, a soft smile on his face. It was a smile that made her heart skip a beat and moved on one stall to another. their shopping adventure, Katie and James found themselves laughing and joking. Their initial nervousness, melting away, as they discovered a natural ease in ink about their families, their studies, and their dreams for the future, revelation, drawing them closer together time flew by and before they knew it the afternoon had turned into the evening hearing the village clock strike the hour james reluctantly said i suppose i should let you continue exploring the market on your own i've taken up enough of your time.
Starting point is 00:21:24 It was lovely to meet you, Katie. Really lovely, Katie's heart sang, at the thought of their time together, coming to an end. She had enjoyed his company immensely, and the idea of parting ways so soon felt strangely disappointing, started to walk away,
Starting point is 00:21:59 an impulse seized her, and she said, James, I was thinking you might like to visit the village hall with me. We could grab something to eat and drink, maybe warm up a bit. James's face litter. His smile,
Starting point is 00:22:21 brighter than any, any of the festive lights around them. I would love that. He replied without hesitation. But only, if you let me pay for the treats, as a thank you for your help with my sister's presence. Katie laughed, nodding in agreement. It's a deal, she said,
Starting point is 00:22:49 being into step beside him as they made their way, towards the village hall. A decorated tree stood proudly outside the hall. Its branches were adorned with shimmering ornaments in chains of red, gold and silver and a string of warm white lights cast a soft glow over the seed on the door. Evergreen boughs
Starting point is 00:23:31 Into woven with festive ribbons and pine cones Pushing open the door They were grunted by a rush of warm air In scent of cinnamon and spices alive With a chatter of people Seated at tables Ones of greenery and twinkling lights
Starting point is 00:24:08 festooned of the walls and a large Christmas tree stood at the far end of the room its branches heavy with handmade decorations James and Katie walked towards a long table at the side of the room
Starting point is 00:24:33 which was piled high with of food. Katie's eyes widened as she took in the selection of goodies. A platters of mince pies with golden crusts, dusted with powdered sugar, and trays of gingerbread cookies in the shapes of stars and trees, simmered on a hot plate, a spicy aroma, mingling with a scent of freshly brewed coffee and rich hot chocolate after a moment's deliberation. James and Katie both opted for the hot chocolate and warm mince pies. Moments later, with mugs of steaming hot chocolate and plates of mince pies in their hand. they settled into their seats at a small table in the corner of the hall
Starting point is 00:25:52 this is lovely katie said gesturing to the hall around them it has such a wonderful community feel to it james nodded in agreement already tucking into his mince pie a few minutes later the door opened and a woman stepped in bringing with her a group of young children James leaned closer to Katie and said isn't that the woman from the tree stall Sophie he asked Katie replied yes she said she's a teacher I wonder if those are some of of her pupils. They look very excited if they're going to sing some carols. James said, I do hope so. As if on cue, Sophie began to arrange the children in a line at the front of the hall, the previous jutter fading into an expectant silence. Under Sophie's gentle guidance,
Starting point is 00:27:30 the children began to sing their voices rising in a joyful chorus of familiar Christmas carols. Sophie called out to the watching audience and invited them to join in with the carous. James didn't hesitate to do so and his voice boomed, out joyfully. Such was his enthusiasm that Katie joined in two. Sang several more carols. Their little faces glowed with pride
Starting point is 00:28:21 when the final notes faded away, erupted into a roar of applause. Children took them giggling as they did so. Sophie thanked everyone for listening to the children's performance she then thanked the children for being so amazed Sophie began
Starting point is 00:28:57 to usher the children out she caught sight of Katie and James in the corner and gave them a friendly wave before disappearing through the door with her young seers. Once Katie and James had finished their refreshments,
Starting point is 00:29:25 they left the village hall and stepped out into the crisp winter air. Katie's gaze was immediately drawn to the ice skating rink. Its smooth surface glistening under the twinkling lights that surrounded it, the sound of laughter,
Starting point is 00:29:54 and the scrape of skates against the ice filled the air. And Katie felt a sudden, irresistible urge to join in the fun. She asked James if he would like to join her on the ice. James shook his head. I'm terrible on the ice. The last time I tried, I fell over and took several people with me. I haven't been on the ice since. When was that? Katie asked.
Starting point is 00:30:38 He folded his arms. When I was seven, you should have seen me. It was like my legs had a mind of their own. and decided to go in different directions. If that wasn't bad enough, I couldn't get up. My mum had to rescue me. I vowed never to do that again.
Starting point is 00:31:07 Katie smiled gently as she said that. You can't let something that happened in the past. Keep you from trying again? James hesitated. His gaze flickering between Katie and the ice ring, she could see the uncertainty in his eyes. The lingering memory of his childhood mishap, holding him back.
Starting point is 00:31:40 But Katie wasn't ready to give up just yet. How about this? She offered a mischief of, A mischievous glint in her eye. I'll hold your hand the whole time. That way, if you start to wobble, I'll be right there to keep you steady at her words. James's face softened and he unfolded his arms, held her gaze.
Starting point is 00:32:16 Well, if you're willing to take on the challenge of keeping me upright, Then I suppose I can't say no. He grinned. Come on, before you change your mind towards the ice rink. James, a few steps behind her placed up in their skates. They stepped onto the smooth, gleaming surface, hand in hand. At first, James was unsteady. his legs wobbling as he tried to find his balance.
Starting point is 00:33:07 But true to her word, Katie held his hand firmly. Her fingers intertwined with his, as she guided him forward, she could feel the warmth of his palm against hers. The slight tremor of his nerves, as he took those first tentative glides. You're doing great, she reassured him. Just take it slow and lean into the glide with each passing moment. James' movements grew more confident,
Starting point is 00:33:53 his body relaxing, into the rhythm of the skates against the ice. Katie stayed by his side, her hand never leaving his, a constant source of support and reassurance. Katie found herself captivated by the way James's face lit up with each successful glide. The way his laughter rang out clear and joyful. There was something about being here with him, hand in hand. They felt right as if they had known each other. For far longer than a few hours, they skated on. Lost in a world of that far too soon,
Starting point is 00:34:53 it was time for them to leave the ice as they returned, their boots to the counter. James turned to Katie. and said softly, Thank you for convincing me to give this another try. I never would have done it without you. Katie smiled, her heart warming at his words. She asked,
Starting point is 00:35:25 if you'd like to continue exploring the market with her. He held his hand out. I would love that. through the stores, taking in the sights, sounds and smells of the market. James and Katie found themselves drawn into easy conversation once again, the words flowing as naturally as the mord wine being served at the stalls. They discovered even more shared interest. and experiences.
Starting point is 00:36:16 Laughter mingled with a cheerful chatter of the crowd. Katie loved hearing about James's teaching aspirations and his passion for working with children shining through in every word. He seemed just as enchanted with her dreams of becoming a vet seemed to slip away as passing in a blur of laughter
Starting point is 00:36:54 shared stories and the simple pleasure of each other's company evening turned into night the lights of the market grew brighter casting a warm inviting light over the village
Starting point is 00:37:15 felt a pang of reluctance as she realized she would need to catch her last train home back to university she said to James I should be probably heading to the station soon I have an early class tomorrow and I don't want to miss the train James nodded his expression mirroring her reluctance I've got to trying to catch as well. Would it be all right if we walked to the station together? Of course, Katie replied, and we should probably collect our Christmas trees on the way out.
Starting point is 00:38:13 Let's do that now. James suggested we can take our time walking to the station. Sophie had returned to her post behind the Christmas tree counter. Her face lit up with recognition as she saw James and Katie, and she said, Hello again, I have your trees right here, all boxed up and ready to go. She handed them the boxes, each with a sturdy handle for easy carrying. She asked if they had enjoyed the market. James and Katie exchanged a warm smile
Starting point is 00:39:07 and said they had loved it. Sophie gave them a gentle knowing look and said this won't be your last visit to Sleepco village. James and Katie said they hope it wouldn't be to Sophie for her help and said goodbye to her not while later
Starting point is 00:39:40 the couple reached the train station Katie hoped that her train would be late as she could spend more time with James but alas it wasn't and was already heading towards the platform.
Starting point is 00:40:04 I'd better go, Katie said. Not wanting to say goodbye, James, nervously cleared his throat and said, Katie, I've had such an incredible time with you today. I know we've only just met, but I feel like I've known you for so much longer. I would love to see you again. not just at another Christmas market, but for dinner or a walk in the park. I just know that I don't want this to be the end of our story. Katie's smile was radiant, sorry at his words.
Starting point is 00:40:54 I'd love that too, she replied, can plan something soon. Phone numbers. Their fingers brushing as they handed back, each other's divine. Katie's train came to a stop at the platform, and the doors opened. James leaned closer to Katie to give her a hug goodbye. However, their lips met in a gentle, tender kiss all apart. Katie felt a sense of joy and excitement, knowing she would be seeing James again.
Starting point is 00:41:50 She said goodbye and boarded the train. She settled down in a seat next to the window and continued to wave to James. He grinned and waved back. The train set off and James continued, waving until he was out of sight. Katie gazed out of the window. watching as the twinkling lights of Sleep Cove faded into the distance.
Starting point is 00:42:33 She had a strong feeling that she would return to the charming village in the future and that James would be right by her side.
