Starting point is 00:02:16 due to its natural beauty and took some sound recordings at the locations we're actually going to be visiting so the nature sounds you'll hear on this recording are actually the real sounds from Pololoo Valley
Starting point is 00:02:33 Podolulu Valley is both dramatic and deeply calming, with steep cliffs, lush forest, and a black sand beach, creating a breathtaking, dreamlike setting. Starting point is 00:03:07 I'm happy to tell you that we'll be releasing a series of Hawaiian guided stories over the next few weeks and months and just like this recording or the nature sounds will be recorded on location. So please remember to subscribe
Starting point is 00:03:27 so you'll get updates when we release a new one in the series. Please, the same. to this recording where you can safely sleep and let's begin. Before we begin our walk, let's take a moment to fully relax our body and mind. Start by noticing how comfortably supported you are. Get as comfortable in the bed as you can. Do a little stretch if you need to. and notice the weight of your body sinking into the bed. This time is just for you.
Starting point is 00:04:14 There's nothing you need to do right now. So let your shoulders drop. Your eyes soften. Your brow release and take a deep breath in and relax and exhale slowly out. Again, inhale through your nose and exhale. out through your mouth and let your awareness drift gently down to your toes a relaxation feeling flows through your toes into your ankles into your calves let that wave of relaxation and ease rise up through your thighs your hips
Starting point is 00:05:17 your lower back and breathe into your belly and take a deep breath in through your stomach and relax out. Letting your stomach rise and fall gently without any effort. And then that relaxation feeling flows into your chest, softening all the muscles and it flows from hands, to your arms, to your neck and finally your face. And we begin the journey now. You are standing at the edge of a high lookout point where the land falls away into a lush green valley. Below you lies Polo Lu, meaning long spear in Hawaiian. A name that speaks to both its shape and power, the valley stretches inland like a great emerald corridor, framed by towering cliffs, and rimmed by the endless blue of the Pacific Ocean waves crash far below.
Starting point is 00:07:05 up through the air. This is no ordinary valley. Uolulu is the first of seven deep valleys carved into the flanks of Kohala, the oldest volcano on the island. It is also the oldest of the five volcanoes that make up the big island of Hawaii. The big island
Starting point is 00:07:37 officially called Hawaii Island is the largest and youngest of the Hawaiian Islands, or the five volcanoes that form it, two of which Mauna Loa and Kilauea are still active today. The island is known for its dramatic landscapes, from snow-capped peaks to rainforests, lava fields and blacks and beaches. It's larger than all the other Hawaiian islands combined, yet less densely populated, giving it a wide and spacious feel.
Starting point is 00:08:28 Culturally and spiritually, it holds deep significance as the birthplace of King Kamahamaaha and home to many secret sites and in this Hawaiian series we will explore more of these special places Gohalla
Starting point is 00:08:49 last erupted over 120,000 years ago and since then wind and rain have worn its slopes into dramatic ridges and canyons each one steeped in beauty and memory.
Starting point is 00:09:11 And the volcano was green and not barren anymore. This land has been alive with people for centuries. Long before roads reached this coast, Hawaiian families made their homes here in the valleys of Kohala. They grew Kano, or taro in carefully constructed wetlands called Loe. Irrigated by the cool mountain streams, they built rock-walled terraces,
Starting point is 00:09:54 implanted bread food, bananas and sweet potatoes. They fished from the sea, honoured the land, and lived in a close relationship with the rhythms of the earth was once full of life stone walls and sacred sites still lie hidden in the greenery slowly reclaimed by nature
Starting point is 00:10:25 but the energy and the history remains a quiet presence a listening stillness and this is where our journey begins as we follow the same path once used by farmers, fishermen and children walking barefoot to the sea and we'll descend from this breezy lookout
Starting point is 00:11:00 into the heart of the valley through the ironwood forests and the tree firths you take your first steps down the trail the earth beneath your feet is soft and giving dark with ancient volcanic soil
Starting point is 00:11:23 scattered across the path of smooth black lava rocks remnants of the volcanic activity which is now cooled and moulded by centuries of rain roots twist and reach
Starting point is 00:11:48 across the way forming natural steps etched by time. These steps have been shaped by generations of footstep slowly. Each step is mindful, grounded and present. The air grows cooler as he move beneath the trees. Ferns unfilled on either side of the trail, brushing gently against your right. arms, like welcoming hands.
Starting point is 00:12:39 And you hear bird calls, echo from deep within the canopy, sharp, bright and distant, punctuating the stillness like soft chives, as light filters through a veil of leaves above. The world grows quieter, the chatter of the outer. world fades behind you and you are entering something deeper now. Something older, halfway down, you come across a clearing and see a ledge. And in this clearing, on this midway ledge, you can see the ocean stretching endlessly in front of you. You walk onto the grass and and see the beautiful valley, and the ocean below you gleams silver and blue beneath the sky,
Starting point is 00:14:01 framed by cliffs that rise like cathedral walls. You breathe it in a full nourishing breath, the scent of iron-rich earth, mingles with a delicate perfume of wild orchids. Growing along their shaded rocks You stand still for a moment And just simply feel And in the distance Almost hidden beneath the layers of birdsong and breeze
Starting point is 00:14:56 You hear the soft voice of a waterfall A ribbon of water Descending from the far cliff Unseen but present And you see it cascading air it might be a new waterfall from rainfall
Starting point is 00:15:26 earlier in the day where the water is now finding its natural way down to the sea and the soft gentle sound of the waterfall from this distance is so rare
Starting point is 00:15:47 and do you feel that you need to continue now. Walking down into the valley further, the trail begins to level, and you rejoin the shaded trail. You continue to walk down. The trail begins to level. The descent softens. And you step fully into the belly of the valley.
Starting point is 00:16:22 Here everything is green Alive and breathing The air is thicker with moisture here Sweet and earthy You feel it subtle on your skin like a blessing There's towering ironwood trees That rise around you There long needles
Starting point is 00:16:53 Shimmering in the wind Creating a sound like distant rain or whispered prayer beneath them a stream meanders beside the path and it guides you down with its soft gentle rhythm like a gentle invitation you walk quietly past low stone walls now wrapped in vines and moss they once boarded Carlo terraces The remnants of lives That lived in rhythm with this land These are not ruins
Starting point is 00:17:46 They are memories made of stone The stillness here is deep But not empty It holds something A listening presence A kind of quiet That watches With compassion
Starting point is 00:18:12 And you find a mossy rock and sit on it and you let the valley speak to you. No effort, no striving, just stillness. And the valley speaks in sensations more than worth. And you listen with your whole being and you enjoy this moment for a second. After resting you rise. Your body feels lighter now, as though the valley has taken something heavy from you,
Starting point is 00:19:09 and it makes you feel so good. The sound of the ocean is louder now. More present, you can feel it in your chest like the steady beat of a great ancient heart, and you decide to move on standing up following the trail down and now it narrows
Starting point is 00:19:56 as you go under cover of the grove of twisted ironwards their trunks are niled and grey shaped by years of salt wind and sea air their roots form an almost otherworldly
Starting point is 00:20:21 nabroof beneath the your feet. The wind sighs through their branches like another by, and then the trees part. There it is, a wide expanse of black sand, glinting like obsidian under a soft sun. Dark lava stones are mixed and scattered across the beach, shaped smooth by time. resting like memories from an old story. You step onto the sand, it's cool, gritty and grounding. You can take your shoes off if you want and go barefoot. It's entirely up to you.
Starting point is 00:21:20 But each footfall sinks gently, holding you close to the earth. Walk slowly. to the water's edge, where the ocean greets you with foaming waves that kiss your toes and then retreat. You see a driftwood long, worn smooth by the tide, and you decide to sit down on it and rest. The whole valley is behind you now, and before you, only the sea and the sky. And time slows down, and do you breathe with the ocean, and the ocean comes in. In very gently. The wave makes sense, which relaxes you and puts you into calm.
Starting point is 00:22:53 As the sun lowers, its golden light spills gently over the valley walls, casting long shadows that stretch across the valley walls. the sun. The cliffs glow softly and the trees seem to hum with evening night. You have a bag with you with a blanket and you put it on the sand and then you lie back on the warm light. Letting your body settle completely. Your eyes close without effort. There's no need to look and everything you need is already within you now. The sound and rhythm of the ocean matches your breath
Starting point is 00:23:55 slow and steady eternal. Each inhale drawing in peace and each exhale releasing the day you feel completely still completely held
Starting point is 00:24:19 as the valley has wrapped itself around you like a blanket of earth and sky and remembers the valley protects there is a sacred quiet here a living hush ancient and kind and you are safe
Starting point is 00:24:52 you are home and you feel so relaxed and you're resting here you're not hiking out on going back. Not just yet. You're staying here in the arms of this funny and the night is darkening. The sun is gently going down.
Starting point is 00:25:29 The stars are beginning to reveal themselves. So beautiful here, twinkling gently away. And the cliffs turn to shadow and your sleep just as the ancient ones did with the ocean on one side and the forest on the other
Starting point is 00:25:59 and the deep quiet of Aloha let the rhythm of Pololu carry you now let a stillness wrap around your dreams and you can come back at any point and the valley will always be here waiting for you enjoy
Starting point is 00:26:34 only.
