Starting point is 00:01:21 If you have, you'll probably like The History of Egypt podcast. Every week, we explore tales of this ancient culture. The history of Egypt is available. wherever you get your podcasting fix. Come, let me introduce you to the world of ancient Egypt. Welcome. Tonight I'm reading some Edgar Allan Poe poems that I enjoy, like the Raven and El Dorado. Some are based on sleep, some are Gothic romance, and some are a little spooky. I hope you enjoy them as much as much. as I enjoyed reading them.
Starting point is 00:02:13 I'm reading these poems from a 125-year-old book that I get from my private members' library. So you might hear the turning of the pages. I'll leave a link to a video of the book in my show notes to my social media accounts on Instagram, TikTok and Facebook. So let's begin. Eldorado.
Starting point is 00:02:47 Gaily bedite, a gallant night, in sunshine and in shadow, her journey long, singing a song in search of Eldorado. But he grew old, this night so bold, and over his heart a shadow, fell as he found no spot of ground that looked like Eldorado and as his strength filled him at length he met a pilgrim shadow shadow said he where can it be this land of Eldorado over the mountains of the moon down the valley of the shadow ride boldly ride the shadow replied if you seek for alderado to zante fair isle that from the fairest of all flowers thy gentlest of all gentle names does take how many memories of what radiant hours, at sight of thee and thine at once awake. How many scenes, of what departed bliss?
Starting point is 00:04:22 How many thoughts, of what entombed hopes? How many visions of a maiden that is? No more, no more upon thy verdant slopes. No more, alas, that magical, sad sound, transforming all. Thy charms shall please no more, thy memory no more, a cursed ground. Henceforth, I hold thy flower enabled sure.
Starting point is 00:04:57 O hyacetieth isle, O purple zante, Islor doro, Fior de lavante, The valley of unrest. Once it smiled a silent dell, where the people did not dwell, they had gone onto the walls, trusting to the mild-eyed stars, nightly from their azure towers, to keep watch above the flowers,
Starting point is 00:05:33 in the midst of which all day the sunlight lazily lay, now each visitor shall confess the sad valley's restlessness, nothing there is motionless nothing save the airs that brood over the magic solitude ah by no wind are stirred those trees that palpitate like the chill seas
Starting point is 00:06:03 around the misty Hebrides ah by the wind those clouds are driven that rustle through the unquiet heaven increasingly from morn till even over the violets there lie that lie in myriad types of the human eye over the ladies
Starting point is 00:06:27 there that wave and weep above a nameless grave they wave from out their fragrant tops eternal dews come down in drops they weep from off their delicate stems, perennial tears descend in gems, the sleeper. At midnight in the month of June, I stand beneath the mystic moon.
Starting point is 00:07:12 An opiate vapour, dewy dim, exhales from out her golden rim, and softly dripping, drop by drop, until the quiet mountain top steals drowsily and musically into the universal valley the rosemary nods upon the grave the lily lulls upon the wave wrapping the fog around its breast the ruin moulders into rest
Starting point is 00:07:46 looking like they see the lake A conscious slumber Seems to take And would not for the world awake Or beauty sleeps And low where lies Her casement opens to the skies Irene with her destinies
Starting point is 00:08:07 O Lady Bright Can it be right This window opens to the night The wanton airs from the tree top laughingly through the lattice drop the bodiless airs a wizard root flit through thy chamber in and out and wave the curtain canopy so fitfully so fearfully above the closed and fringed lid neath which they slumbering souls lies hid that over the floor and down the wall Like ghosts the shadows rise and fall O lady dear Hast thou no fear
Starting point is 00:08:57 Why and what art thou dreaming here Sure thou art come over far off seas A wonder to these garden trees Strange is their pallor Strange thy dress Strange above all the length of truss and this all solemn
Starting point is 00:09:23 silentness the lady sleeps oh may her sleep which is enduring so be deep heaven hover in its sacred heap this chamber changed
Starting point is 00:09:39 for one more holy this band for one more melancholy I pray to God that she may lie Forever with an opened eye While the dim Sheated ghosts go by
Starting point is 00:09:56 My love she sleeps O may her sleep As it is lasting So be deep Soft may the worms about her creep Far in the forest dim and old For her may some tall vault
Starting point is 00:10:16 Unfold Some vault that oft hath flung its black And winged panels fluttering back Triumphant over the crated pools Of her grand family funerals Some sepulchre remote alone Against whose portal she hath thrown In childhood many an idle stone
Starting point is 00:10:46 some tomb from out whose sounding door She never shall force an echo more For inning to think poor child of sin It was the dead who groaned within evening star T'was noontide of summer and midtime of night And stars in their ormess shone pale through the brighter mid planets her slaves too cold for me a fleecy cloud and i turned away to thee proud evening star in thy glory afar for joy to my heart heaven at night thy distant fire raven once upon a midnight dreary while i pondered
Starting point is 00:12:39 weak and weary over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten law while I nodded nearly napping suddenly there came a tapping as of someone
Starting point is 00:12:58 gently wrapping wrapping at my chamber door toism visitor I muttered tapping at my chamber door and nothing more, I remember. It was in the bleak December, and each, separate dying ember,
Starting point is 00:13:26 wrought its ghost upon the floor. Eagely, I wished the morrow. Vainly I had sought to borrow, from the books a cease of sorrow, sorrow for the last Lenore. for the rare and radiant maiden, whom the angels name Lenore, nameless here, forevermore. And the silken sad and certain rustling purple curtain filled me with fantastic terrors never felt before.
Starting point is 00:14:14 So that now, to still the beating of my heart, I stood repeat. Tis some visitor entreating entrance at my chamber door, some lay visitor entreating at my chamber door. This is it, and nothing more presently, my soul grew stronger, hesitating then no longer. Sir, said I, or madam, truly your forgiveness I implore. But the fact is, I was napping, and so gently you came rapping, and so faintly, you came tapping, tapping at my chamber door, that I scarce was sure I heard you. Here, I opened wide
Starting point is 00:15:13 the door. Darkness there, deep into the darkness peering. Long I stood there, wondering, fearing, doubting, dreaming dreams, no mortal ever dared to dream before. But the silence wasn't broken, and the stillness gave no token, and the only word there spoken was the whispered word, Lenore. This second to the chamber turning, all my soul within me burning. Soon again, I heard a tapping somewhat louder than before. Surely, said I, surely that is something at my window-ladders.
Starting point is 00:16:21 Let me see then what there at is be still a moment, and this mystery explore. Tis the wind and nothing more. Open here, I flung the shutter, many a flirt and flatter, in their step of their saintly days of your Bayescence made he, not a minute's stop or stayed he, that with the eyeing of lord or lady perched above my chamber door, perched upon a burst of purse of my chamber door, perched upon a burst of palace, just above my chamber door, perched and sat as ebony bird, they guiding my sad fancy into smiling, by the grave and stern decorum of the countenance into war thy crest be shorn and shaven though, I said, craven. Gars thee grim, an ancient raven wandering from the nightly shore
Starting point is 00:17:54 Tell me what thy lordly name is On the night's plutonian shore The raven Nevermore, to hear discourse so plainly Lois answer little meaning Little relevancy bore For we cannot help agree but no living human being ever yet was blessed with seeing bird above his chamber door.
Starting point is 00:18:35 Burdle beast, above the sculptured bust, above his chamber door, with such name as nevermore. But the raven, sitting lowly on the placid bust, spoke only with this, his soul so aptly spoken what it matters and stole from some unhappy master whom unmercifully disaster followed fast and followed faster till his songs won burden ball till the dirges of his hope that men and conny burdened raven, still be kinding, fancy into smiling. Straight, I wheeled a cushioned seat in front of bird and ber velvet sinking. I betook myself to linking, fancy and to fancy, thinking what this ominous bird of
Starting point is 00:20:42 y'all, lastly gone I sat, engaged in guessing. but no syllable expressing to the fowl whose fiery eyes now burned into my bosom's core with my head reclining on the cushions velvet lining that the lamplight gloated over but whose with the lamplight gloating over she shall press by seraphine who's with the lamp light gloating over she shall press by seraphine who's who's with the lamp-light gloating over she shall press by seraphine who Whose footfalls tinkled on the tufted floor, which I cried, Thy God hath learnt thee, By these angels, Night and Nepent thee, From thy memories of laur,
Starting point is 00:22:16 Raven, nevermore, Thing of evil, Prophet still, if bird or devil, Whether tempest sent, Or whether tempest tossed thee here ashore, Desolate yet This desert Annes truly I implode
Starting point is 00:23:03 Gide, prophets and I Prophets still If bird or devil bends above us By that God We both are within the distant Eden It shall clasp
Starting point is 00:24:17 As a token Of that lie Thy soul Hath spoken Leave my loneliness earth unbroken, quit the bust above my door. Take thy beak from out of my heart, and take thy form from off my door. Quoth the raven, never more.
Starting point is 00:24:45 And the raven, never flitting, still is sitting, still is sitting, just above my chamber door, and is open my chamber door, and his eyes have all the seeming of a demons that is dreaming, and the lamplight over him streaming throws his shadow on the floor, and my soul from out that shadow that lies floating on the floor, shall be lifted, never more haunted palace of our valleys. by good angels talented was a fair and stately palace-spread opinion
Starting point is 00:25:58 over fabric half so fair as yellow glorious golden on its roof did float and flow this or this was in the old ago and every gentle air weekday to a loose well-tuned law on a throne where, sitting Porphyrogen, instate his glory, well-befitting, blushed to a discoled river, a hideous frown, rush out forever, city,
Starting point is 00:28:51 reared himself a throne, in a strange city lying alone, within the dim west, where the good and the bad and the worst and the best eaten towers resemble nothing that is ours. With silently, beneath the sky, dreams up the turrets, silently, gleams up the pinnacles far and free, up domes, up spires, up kingly halls, shadowy, long, things, forgotten bowers of sculptured ice reefed freezes intertwine the violet and the vine residedly beneath the sky the melancholy waters lie so blend the turrets and shadows there will seem pendulous in air tower in the town
Starting point is 00:31:12 Death looks Gigantically down Their open veins And gaping graves Yon level With their luminous waves But not the riches That the idols
Starting point is 00:31:32 No ripples kill Alas, no swellings tell That winds may be A sea Serene But though a stir is in the air the wave thrust aside
Starting point is 00:32:22 in slightly sinking the dull tide are at a glow the hours of breathing of subtle hands reverence by a root obscure and lonely haunted by ill angels
Starting point is 00:33:20 only yet an idolan named night on a black throne rains upright I have reached these lands but newly From an ultimate dim fuel From a wild weird climb
Starting point is 00:33:42 That leaf sublime Out of space, out of time Bottomless veils and boundless flas And chasms and caves And tighten woods with forms that no man can discover for the dews that drip all over mountains toppling evermore
Starting point is 00:34:13 into seas without a shore seas that restlessly aspire surging on two skies of fire lakes that endlessly outspread their lone waters lone and dead there's still waters still and chiny
Starting point is 00:34:37 with the snows of the lolling lily that lus outspread their low waters lone and dead their sad waters sad and chiny with the snows
Starting point is 00:34:57 of the lolling lily By the mountains near the river, murmuring lowly, murmuring ever, by the green woods, by the swamp, where the toad and the newt encamp, by the dismal tarns and pools, where dwell the ghouls, by each spot the most unholy, in each look most melancholy, melancholy, where the traveller meets a gas, sheeted memories of the past, shrouded forms that start and sigh, as they pass the wanderer by, white-robed forms of friends are given, in agony to the earth and heaven. For the heart, whose woes are legion, tis a peaceful, soothing. region, for the spirit that walks in shadow, tis oh, tis an Eldorado, but the traveller, travelling through it may not dare not openly view it. Never its mysteries are exposed, to the weak human eye unclosed, so wills its king who
Starting point is 00:36:27 half forbid the uplifting of the fringed lid, and thus the sad soul that here passes, beholds it but through darkened glasses, by a root obscure and lonely, haunted by ill angels only, where an idolen named night on a black throne reigns. upright. I have wandered home but newly from this ultimate dim feel.
