To sailors and sea captains, the forecast provides vital weather information, but its appeal extends beyond its primary purpose and it has become something of a British institution. Starting point is 00:02:35 It even lulls some listeners to sleep, and it has had a huge influence on popular culture, inspiring the likes of Blur, Radiohead and The Prodigy. For many Brits, it's a soothing poetic reminder of our island nation. For those who work on the high seas, it can be a lifeline. The ethereal names that denote the sea areas refer to areas that are sunbanks, estries and islands. The forecast follows a course from the north-east coast of Scotland, following a clockwise direction

Starting point is 00:03:23 until it finds its final destination in south-east Iceland. The shipping forecast must be read at a steady even pace. with the understanding that any part of the information could be important to someone making clear navigation decisions. It begins with the wind directions and speed as defined by the Beaufort scale. Once speeds go over seven, each number has a name. Eight is gale, nine is severe gale, with a top number being the lower rare hurricane force, 12. Following the wind is the weather and visibility report, and these always should relate to each other. If there is heavy rain, the visibility will be poor.
