Starting point is 00:03:48 Timothy's song by Mindy Elliot Timothy had to leave home His mother loved him His father loved him All his brothers and sisters loved him When crickets finish school, the next step is to find a way to help others. Some crickets become lucky charms, and some crickets become top-rate advisors for important people. Some crickets even become experts on fishing, helping the fishermen land a big catch.

Starting point is 00:04:29 Mama, I don't know how to help anyone, Timothy cried. You have studied hard at school and learned a lot. Your teachers were always telling me what a good student you were and how hard you worked. Now you must think of something you enjoy doing and find a way to use your gift to help others. His mother said, How can I help anyone?

Starting point is 00:05:00 I am just a little cricket and the only thing I like to do is sing. His father spoke up. and said, Timothy, you have a wonderful singing voice and a smart mind. I am sure you'll find a way to use your songs to help others. Timothy left home after his family gave him a big going away party. At the party, Timothy was asked by his family and friends to sing songs to entertain them. Timothy sang his heart out, and even though everyone kept telling him how much they liked his singing, he could still not think of a way to use singing to help anybody. He left, feeling very

Starting point is 00:05:51 discouraged and very scared. His mother hugged him as he was leaving and slipped a note in his pocket. That night, as ten apples slices, under the stars, He read the note from his mother, wide and long. As I'll go, I'll sing my song. Your love and thoughts will carry me, as I seek what I will be. Got to go look so I can see. Got to go look, what's ahead of me? On down the road and around the bend, my feet will lead me to the end.

Starting point is 00:06:36 The note said, Timothy, I am very proud of you and I know you will do well on your own you have a great gift and I know you will find a way to use it to make yourself and others happy the next morning Timothy headed down the road

Starting point is 00:06:56 he made friends and sang whenever he could many of the animals stopped to listen to the little cricket sing they applauded and gave him some money. This was enough to keep him eating apple slices for many days. But Timothy was not happy. He felt he was not doing enough. And one day he ran into the wise old owl. He asked the owl, I sing for everyone I meet and it makes me feel happy. How can I help anyone by singing? The owl replied

Starting point is 00:07:42 Timothy, you have a gift for singing When you use the gifts you are given It will be easy to help someone Timothy sometimes had to take on other jobs To be able to afford his apples lises Once he worked in a store Selling acorns to squirrels And carrots to bunny rabbits

Starting point is 00:08:05 But this did not make him happy He did not care for acorns or carrots and even though the customers were nice, they did not have much to talk about as he worked as a lifeguard at a pond, watching over frogs and their tadpoles while they swam. He soon found out that this was not the job for him because he was not a good swimmer and would have a hard time rescuing anyone. Timothy even worked in a beauty salon for a ladybugs and butterflies, but found this boring. All he wanted to do was sing. Feeling unhelpful he left the city and headed to the country.

Starting point is 00:08:54 Nighttime was coming and Timothy was looking for a place to sleep for the night. He saw an old house in a field and thought he could find a knot hole in the windowsill to bunk for the night. He heard voices coming from inside. A mother and father were talking to talk about the window. talking to a doctor as he was getting ready to leave. I have done all I can for her. I hope the medicine will work, but what she really needs is peaceful sleep, he heard the doctor say.

Starting point is 00:09:34 Doctor, we have tried everything to help her sleep, but the pain is so bad it wakes her up many times during the night, closely to the mother and father talking, and learned their daughter was very sick, and the medicine did not seem to be helping. The little girl could not sleep through the night because she was in a lot of pain. Timothy hopped over to the little girl's windowsill and looked in.

Starting point is 00:10:08 His heart felt sad and when he saw her little body curled under the covers and heard her crying, Timothy wanted to do something to help but did not know what to do. Well, at least I can share with her my favourite song, Timothy thought. Timothy sang through the night and into the early hours of the morning. He was so pleased with this song.

Starting point is 00:10:35 He did not notice that the little girl was not crying as much as before. Instead, she slept and dreamt of running through the fields and playing under the stars. By morning, Timothy was tired. He found a knoll in the silence. and crawled into rest. He slept as the moon rose in the sky. Timothy checked on the little girl. Again she was lying in her bed crying, and Timothy sang to her. This time he sang songs he learned at school. The little girl dreamt that night about being in school and playing with her friends. Timothy sang until the morning sun warped his head and then slept the day away. Cool, cool. Reading, writing arithmetic, heading down the road I skip,

Starting point is 00:11:42 called cool. Friends, games and stories, never a day is boring. Hard to learn all I can, so I can learn to helping hand. It's cool, cool, cool, packing up the day is done for learning fun. On the third night up to sea where the beautiful songs were coming from, he asked him, Timothy, why do you sing to the little girl every night? Timothy answered, I feel sorry for her, and thought my songs would help her. That's silly. How can the songs from a little cricket like you help a sick girl, joy singing, and I have nothing better to do, said Timothy. Timothy continued to sing to the little girl each night.

Starting point is 00:12:44 On the sixth night, a bat flew down to Timothy. to see what was going on. The bullfrog says you are singing to help the little sick girl. Is this true? Yes, it is true and I bet you want to tell me I'm silly. No, I'm not going to tell you that you're silly. I'm going to let you know how much I like your singing. I have started looking for bugs over by the house at night

Starting point is 00:13:11 so I can hear you sing. Thank you for making my night less lonely and I hope in some way you help the little girl. This made Timothy feel wonderful. He puffed up his chest and sang songs his mother taught him as he was growing up. Some of the songs were about his family and some were just funny songs he used to sing with his brothers and sisters. The little girl slept peacefully and dreamt of making cookies

Starting point is 00:13:41 with her mom and working in the garden with her father. Timothy sang well into the morning, and when he did go to sleep, every part of him was tired. He did not know if he was going to be able to sing the next night or sleep for two days. Grow up, grow up, growing to find what to do. Grow up, grow up to help someone just like you. Grow up, grow up, I just want to sing my song. Grow up, grow up, I can sing them all think of what to be. grew up, grow up, exploring possibilities.

Starting point is 00:14:20 Grow up, grow up ideas forming in my head. I saw her dreams, checked on the little girl, she was not in bed. Frightened, Timothy started looking for her. He heard the grown-ups talking in the kitchen, so he hopped over there to listen. It's the most amazing thing I've ever seen. You've never seen a child recover like this. She has slept well for the past six nights, and this morning she woke and wanted to eat. It's been weeks since she's felt well enough to eat and now look at her.

Starting point is 00:15:08 To the front door to see what they were. Their little girl was running through the fields, laughing and having a good time. Come on, Timothy. You made her well. Come celebrate with us, the bullfrog shouted. Timothy felt wonderful. He did find a way to help someone with his gift of song. He was not tired anymore and leapt through the fields,

Starting point is 00:15:34 with a little girl singing and leaping with the others. He could not wait to tell his family how a little cricket's gift helped a sick girl.
