Habits and Hustle - Episode 228: Decoding Trendy Slang Words

Episode Date: March 31, 2023

Do you know what it means to have drip? In this episode of Habits and Hustle, we go through a list of slang terms used by Gen Z in every day life and on social media. We go through what these slang t...erms mean, how to use them in a sentence, and where they originate from. What we discuss: 01:17: What does “drip” mean? 02:25: What does “extra” mean? 03:31: What does “it is giving” means? 05:51: What does “rizz” mean? 06:44: What does “ touch grass” mean? 07:17: What are the top 10 slang words? 09:10: What is a “simp”? Takeaways: Many of the slang words young people are using these days are borrowed from other languages, other cultures, and other countries. Examples include British terms such as “lads” as a synonym to men and “ savage” from Black culture to describe someone who is not holding back. Slang words come in and out of style every few months. This cycle is further sped-up due to the speed at which social media distributes the new terms, making adoption of these terms a lot faster.  My links: Website: https://www.jennifercohen.com/ Instagram: @therealjencohen  Learn more about your ad choices. Starting point is 00:00:31 Hi guys, it's Tony Robbins. You're listening to Habits and Hustle. Crash it. Hi everyone. Welcome to another solo episode of Habits and Hustle. Today it's going to be a, I think it's going to be a super fun episode because I'm with my foil and she's 30. So she's not exactly, you know, she's thirsty.
Starting point is 00:00:57 She is thirsty. She's a thirsty, thirsty, 30 year old. But which is actually a great segue into what we're going to be talking about today. We're going to be talking about all the different slings out there that people use, that I'm kind of just kind of getting used to some of them. And as I'm getting used to them, there's other ones. The ones I even know are considered to be old already. I mean, like the thirsty, that's old already, right? Yeah, it is a bit old now. So we covered Thirst Trap already in another episode. And if you wanna know what Thirst Trap is,
Starting point is 00:01:28 listen to the episode before this. Yeah, listen to the episode before this. And now we're gonna move on, cause I thought it was super fun and very informative for my old ass. So let's get to it. So we've got a few, I wanna go through them, okay? The one that I really like is drip. Yes. Okay.
Starting point is 00:01:46 Drip. So drip's like a big one. I hear people hear all the kids talking about it. And what drip is when you like like your outfit and your outfits on What you're fashionable your yeah, you're off. It looks good. Your outfit is drippy like if you have a lot of style If you're wearing a lot of cool pieces, you know what I mean? Like, you're dripping. You're dripping. It sounds so like, I don't know. It just sounds like, cause if it's like a Gen Z type of, you know,
Starting point is 00:02:14 slang word. Okay, saying word. It is, all this slang comes from black culture, by the way. It just got adopted by Gen Z. So all of this has been slang for decades in black culture and now Gen Z is catching on to all of it So it's actually kind of funny like when you look at the origins a lot of these words They're not really that new people just the young generation is now just all starting to use that
Starting point is 00:02:34 I'm so sure you say that because I one of my really good friends doll that would always say to me, you know, you're so extra Yeah, you always look you're so extra and he would say this to me, I kid you not like 10 years ago, like not 10 years ago. And I'd be like, what does extra mean? And he'd be like, you're so extra. And now I'm hearing people who are talking about the word extra. Right, extra is pretty old, but yeah, yeah. It is pretty old. But I'm saying like now like my mom's talking about it.
Starting point is 00:03:01 Or like a very big, my mom's not by the way. But what I mean is, it's become a very mainstream word. Absolutely. All of this stuff trickles down. I think also now because of social media and the access to everything. Yes. Like all these kids that are on social,
Starting point is 00:03:14 now all of this stuff that was a little harder and less accessible in terms of like being culturally specific to one group, for example, is now super, I mean, it's just super widely known, like even British slang. British slang is now used everywhere, which is so crazy, because like you would just not see that back in the day. Like people now using the word lad or like lads tour when they go on like a boys trip. Like that's just not common, but now, because of social, all of this stuff is just so everywhere. Love islands, like it's so widely popular
Starting point is 00:03:43 around the world, and that everybody's adopting this stuff. So it's pretty kind of cool. All these cultures are bringing all their slangs together. I hear that. Okay, so let's go through other ones because if I were just to pull up, a lot of these words actually I've heard of. Do you know it's giving? Because that's a really good one. It's giving. What does that mean? It's giving. So for example, let's say you're watching a clip of something and it's really reminiscent of Michael Scott from the office.
Starting point is 00:04:11 You'd be like, it's giving Michael Scott. You know what I mean? It's giving Michael Scott. Oh, I've heard that, but I've never heard it. I guess it's when I didn't know that was slaying. It's not a real slaying. Oh, yeah. I want, okay.
Starting point is 00:04:22 That's literally prime slang right now. I want you to spill the tea. It's another real slang. Oh yeah. I want like, okay. That's literally prime slang right now. I want you to spill the tea. Which is another slang. Spill the tea, which I feel is very common. On like really like, when's that art? Like it's giving I got you, but like give me a couple more that are not so known. You know it's giving. There's no, okay use it in a sentence please. Okay. You know it's giving. There's no, okay, use it in a sentence, please.
Starting point is 00:04:46 Okay, you just did. Like, for example, if I were to see Michael Scott on the office, or I don't know, like if I were to, I don't, okay, so maybe that's a bad, okay, or okay, fine. Let's say, how would I use it in a sentence? For example, it's like,
Starting point is 00:05:04 I'm watching LeBron James, and I would say, oh, it's say, how would I use it in a sentence? For example, it's when I come down. I was watching LeBron James, and I would say, oh, it's giving Michael Jordan. Would that be? I mean, kind of. Okay, would it not not kind of? Isn't that what it is? Not like, not really in what context.
Starting point is 00:05:15 How is, what is LeBron doing? That's it's giving Michael Jordan. He's playing basketball really well. But that's, but LeBron is the goat. No, it's getting, he'd be like, okay, so if I say, oh Dylan, who's my 10 year old, is giving Michael Jordan right now, would that make sense? It doesn't always have to be like, you could say like, for example, if, okay, let's say
Starting point is 00:05:34 Sydney walks down like a really cute, like puffy dress or something, be like, it's giving prom. Okay. Just some saying. Yeah, this is actually like basically stamping the deal. Like it's basically just basically proven the point that I'm too old to do shit. Oh my God.
Starting point is 00:05:50 Okay, so it's giving. Okay, so we have this giving. We're like giving queen, it's giving, it's giving main girl, main girl energy. You know what I mean? Like you know what I mean? It's just basically like it's giving, whatever it's giving. I understand.
Starting point is 00:06:01 I understand. Okay, so so far we have it's giving. Drift, we did thirst trap on another episode. Yes. We did extra, which is not really that much of a slang, although it's becoming, it's more mainstream now. It used to be much more, I was told I was extra 10 years ago by Dolvet. So I have a really good one for you. Okay, it's Riz. Do you know Riz? No. Riz is basically charisma. So it's just like, wow, so much Riz. Like so like, wow, so I've never heard that one. Like you have a lot of Riz. Like you, like you've got a lot of charisma. That's not a popular one, is it? It's very popular right now.
Starting point is 00:06:36 It is. It's super, super popular. Yeah, everybody's using the word Riz right now. People love the word Riz. Have you guys heard the word Riziz at home? Or a new car? Anyone listening? Has Riz come to a TikTok near you? You know exactly. I'd like to know from people who are listening to this podcast, can you guys share maybe in the comments below some slang words that maybe you've heard, that you can share with the rest of us?
Starting point is 00:07:00 I'm curious now. I mean, because I've never heard the one, Riz. Yeah, but you asked me for one that was less. I know, I'm saying that's what I'm saying. Maybe they've heard some words that I haven't heard. Riz is a great one. Also, touch grass is a really good one for online people. So, for example, if you're a content
Starting point is 00:07:16 on your computer all day, people go touch grass, go get in touch with reality, go outside, go touch grass. It's a good one. Yeah, yeah, it's like a grip, if you will. Starting point is 00:08:49 Yes, I'm actually so intrigued by what it would have to say. Yeah, I'm curious what it would say. The top 10 would be of like the last, even like the last couple. Yeah, since I guess 2023. Yeah, top 10 top 10 slang words 23. Yeah, let's ask it. Yeah, what are the top 10 sign words 2023. Yeah, let's ask it. Yeah, what's our top 10 slang words for 2023? Let's see what it has to say for itself. Technically, it's only a learning model
Starting point is 00:09:14 that learned up to 2021 if I'm not mistaken, but I think it can still predict, keeping up with popular. Okay, while you're looking, Vibe Check is a big one. Glow up is another one. Karen's super old. Like she's so Karen. Glow up is so old. I'm talking, I'm looking at right now,
Starting point is 00:09:35 TikTok slang words and phrases you need to know, okay? Number one is, live rent free in my mind. Also old. Okay, well I'm telling Karen, another one. Lit, that's super old. Extra, I told you about that one already. Glow up, vibe check. Vibes check to me is very similar to drip.
Starting point is 00:09:55 No. Yeah, vibe check. You're checking the vibe, no? No, because drip is more your style. Oh, your style, okay. Oh, so vibe check is more like what the vibe is of the of like where you are, right? Like in like the environment. I never use Vibe Check. I mean, by the okay, not to. Yeah, it's more like like your mood. Okay, so I'm actually pretty impressed
Starting point is 00:10:16 with myself because I know all of these. Yeah, because they're all old. So they're all the oldest language. That's why you don't know Riz because Riz is right now. Okay, so on my list, it's saying the big words are low-key, which we got, slay, with all her slay. With this list, was written in 2019. No, it's saying 2015. Maybe 2008, what is that from? Okay, this list is from Google's top slang list. Yeah, January 30th, 2023.
Starting point is 00:10:43 And on this list is Karen Litts Extra. Flex, glow up, five checks, lay low key. And I know most of them. Yeah, there's a reason why you know most of them. I'm just saying. Do you know what Simp is? What? Do you know what Simp is?
Starting point is 00:10:59 No, what Simp. So Simp is like, if you're sipping for someone, like you're placating to them, like you're sipping for someone. Like for example, like a guy that does every single thing that they're their girlfriend wants would be a Simp. I never heard that in my life. Yeah, that's a really common one. Like stop sipping bro.
Starting point is 00:11:16 Simp. Simp. Actually, I wonder what the actual definition. What, wait, what did ChapGPGPT come back with? ChapGPD didn't give us any slang words. It gave us advice on how to stay relevant. That's it? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:11:27 So so far kids. The chatGPT is not all that it's correct up to be because it doesn't even have the ability to do this. Okay. No, it literally said follow social media trends. Keep up with popular culture. Pay attention to your local area. Use slang dictionaries. talk to young people.
Starting point is 00:11:46 It's like giving us how to stay relevant with the slang. Another big one that I see here all the time is CEO. Every list I'm looking at is saying CEO is a big slang word now. Interesting one. I know, I don't know 30-year-old. See. By the way, what I should be having on this podcast
Starting point is 00:12:02 to talk about this is a 21-year-old. So if you're a 21-year-old person. You don't even know any of the ones I'm saying, and now you think you'd be able to come up with them? Well, listen, listen, I want to see how bad I really am. I bet you they can stump you. They might be able to, but I'm pretty in the know. Okay, you gave me Riz for charisma.
Starting point is 00:12:18 Yeah, Riz, Sam, what else did I give you? I gave you quite a few. And no, and the Michael, the one that you said oh it's giving It's giving it's giving touch grass. These are all very good. Those are very good ones All right, I think that's a good that's that's good We can like do another episode of another top 10 I think what people should do is submit their favorite slang words and then we can go through and run them down I said the best thing to do is please guys now

So thank you, and I'm gonna look forward to looking at some of these other slings. And maybe we can go over them in another episode. Have a Ruseful day. Yeah. Have a charismatic day.
Starting point is 00:13:19 No one uses Ruseful, you would never say that. But I'm gonna start that now. Okay, you can start it. Bye. Hope you never say that. I'm gonna start that.
