Starting point is 00:00:55 Welcome to the Habits and Hustle Podcast. A podcast that uncovers the rituals, unspoken habits, and mindsets of extraordinary people. A podcast powered by Habit Nest. Now here's your host, Jennifer Cohen. [♪ OUTRO MUSIC PLAYING [♪ So I'm so excited today, you guys, because I have one of the biggest true fitness icons on Habit and Hustle.
Starting point is 00:01:21 We have Denise Austin, who is legit, what are the first pioneers of this? Thank you, Jen. No, this is true. I would do your videos all the time. And of course, I told you before when we, when you got here, I was like a giddy little school girl. Every morning, I would do your workouts at home. I love that.
Starting point is 00:01:39 No, but it's true. It means so much because all those years, I was on for 24 years straight. Can you imagine 10 years first on ESPN, and then I went to lifetime TV for another 14 years. So I was consecutively every single weekday for 24 years on TV. So I loved it.
Starting point is 00:01:58 No, it's a bit, and like also like at the time, like now fitness has become a phenomenon, right? The whole wellness business is a multi-billion dollar, you know, whole thing in industry. But at the time, it wasn't, right? Like, oh, no, it wasn't at all. We had to really say, I swear, fitness is great. You feel good, exercise will help.
Starting point is 00:02:19 Find heart disease, you'll feel better. So we were, you know, working hard. I started 40 years ago on the Jack Lillane show. Some of your viewers might have heard of Jack Lillane. Well, Jack Lillane was the first ever, right? On television too. He was the first in 1938 to develop a leg press machine. And it is how still has it there. And I got to speak it as celebration of life. If we stayed friends for 35 years.
Starting point is 00:02:49 Really? He's a great guy. And his wife Elaine Elaine is still involved. Wow, you could have been. Yes, yes. So then how did you, so then how did it kind of morph? You had a gymnastics background. You went to school.
Starting point is 00:03:01 You got a scholarship, right? To college. To college for that. To go to college for that. To go to college for that go to that. To go to that. To go to that. To go to that. To go to that. To go to that. To go to that. To go to that. To go to that. To go to that. To go to that. To go to that. To go to that. To go to that. To go to that. To go to that. To go to that. To go to that. To go to that. To go to that. To go to that. To go to that. To go to that. To go to that. To go to that. To go to that. To go to that. To go to that. To go to that. To go to that. To go to that. To go to that. To go to that. To go to that. To go to that. To go to that. To go to that. To go to that. To go to that. To go to that. To go to that. To go to that. To go to that. To go to that. To go to that. To go to that. To go to that. To go to that. To go to that it was called aerobics back in the day. And I would teach at different places all over. I brought my little music cassette tapes. And so I would go all over Los Angeles to corporations, because part of my degree I did corporate fitness.
Starting point is 00:03:37 So I went to Kaiser hospitals. And we moved away all the different lunch tables and just moved the chairs. And I would teach teach 530 every night after work at North Rob. All over TRW and, you know, yeah, so you're basically a fitness professional who's going from place to place. Because they're learning. They're learning a gym, right? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:03:59 So, do I need gyms back then at all? Not really. Just a few like women-y-type, not real gyms, but I first also started in the Rack-a-Ball Courts. So I would rent the Rack-a-Ball Court and instead of doing Rack-a-Ball, I'd filled up with 35 ladies.
Starting point is 00:04:15 That's all we could fit to do aerobics. Woo! Wow, that's what you did. I go everywhere. Yes, and then that was in 1980. And then by 1981 gyms were starting, and that's how I met my husband. I was setting up in a Robick studio inside a tennis club and I was just looking for a certain room that I could teach my aerobics and my husband, Jeff, was warming up his sister, Tracy Austin, for the US soap and back in the day and she
Starting point is 00:04:45 wanted that here. So that was kind of cool. That's how you met your husband. That's how I met Jeff. So it was really, you know, it was staring at me. It was wonderful. So then when you, like, at that time then, that was very entrepreneurial, right? Yes.
Starting point is 00:04:57 Because you thought to yourself, okay, I do this. Right. There's no gyms. So you did you rent the space? Yeah, I would rent the space at, or I would give a chance to give you know like one dollar if you're an employee come to my Rubik's class at lunchtime Wow exactly. So I'd be there with all the one dollars. You were charging one dollar to come to the dollar. One dollar yes if they're employees of that was when I did
Starting point is 00:05:19 Kaiser hospitals and so they I would leave with all this like $60 Oh my god I think that would be like dollars for strippers but or fitness That was me oh my gosh We came business, you know of course well how did you make it a business like how to go from that so like an actual one thing I did that I believe was the right thing to do. I did a lot of volunteer every weekend. I would give lectures at anything to the American Heart Association. They had, you know,
Starting point is 00:05:54 even like a convalescent home I would speak at like, okay, everybody we got to move. And one day, I spoke at the Jewish Center near the Grove here in Los Angeles and in low and behold, a producer from K-ABC in LA was there visiting his mom who happened to be in the Jewish Center together and he said, oh my gosh, you need to do something on TV with the I went, okay KBC LA, okay. This is in 1983. So no real fitness aerobic. So he said, well, I can give you right now nothing's on at 5.30 in the morning. It was just lines across, you know, I mean, back in the day before. Oh, I'm the first to my browser day now. But in
Starting point is 00:06:39 1983, I started by 1983. That's when I got chance chance to go on TV, K-A-B-C, and it was a huge hit. It was daybreak with Denise. Got it, too close. And it was before I got married, so I had the show, and it was a huge hit at 530, because everyone was like, the news didn't start till 6 back in the day, local news. So 530 people turned it on, and there I was doing really high and like What?
Starting point is 00:07:07 And you can do it. And you're still the same. And like nothing's changed. I still do it. It's unbelievable. So that guy had the wherewithal. Like what made you think at the time that oh this this is going to work for TV right? Because no one's done it.
Starting point is 00:07:19 No one had really done it except Jacqueline was on KHA. Right. But there was a break like there was after Jacqueline there was reallyJ. Right, you know. But there was a break, like there was after Jacqueline, there was really no one but until you. For a break and then I started and it was a huge hit. So then I moved to Washington DC, got married to DC and I did the today show once a month, started 1984 as their fitness expert.
Starting point is 00:07:40 And that gave me more of a national name. So how did you even get to that? Because at the time? I don't even believed yet. This is hustle. Okay, this is what I do. You know, I believe in myself, and I believe even when I was young, I believe that,
Starting point is 00:07:53 oh my God, I could just get people to do something. It's all smooth, I would get them going. Right. So I called up the producer of the today's show, listen, the 35 times, And the secretary would always say, oh, let him know you call. Boom. I'll let him know you call. And I'd be very, very nice. You know, I have such a great idea. No one at the time on the Today Show had ever done a fitness piece. This was in 1984. So finally, I said to myself, oh, I was so bummed. Like, I know I could do this. So finally I said to myself, oh, I was so bummed like I know I could do this.
Starting point is 00:08:27 So finally I said, I'm going to call it a different time. I was called 95, you know, as you know. And I called it 630 and night and you went, stay free, man. I went, oh my mouth. I see Friedman, this is Denise Haasen, and I could do exercise. And he wasn't saying anything on the other line. I didn't even know if he hung up. And he was, and then at the end, he said, you could come next week for a meeting. I said, okay, great, thank you. I went to his meeting.
Starting point is 00:08:52 He's in Rockefeller Center, third floor, sitting in the office, and he loved baseball. He had a baseball bat. And he was sitting there with a baseball bat and I was like, oh my God, you know, here I was, 28 years old. And I said, we need to do exercise on TV. You need to show little segments.
Starting point is 00:09:11 Every month I can do something different, January, New Year's, February, Heart Health, March, you know, get out there and walk. So he just watched me as I said, you know, I had written a book called, Tone Up at the Terminals, an exercise guide for computer operators. That's what we call, you know, terminal. And it was, you know, things you could do at the office
Starting point is 00:09:34 to stretch and get rid of tension. He loved it. So he gave me a piece of paper and said, March 23rd, 24th. And those are my first times I was on. And we got 10,000 letters the first time I was on. And I got just as much that week as Willard Scott back in the day, Willard Scott got all the letters. Right.
Starting point is 00:09:51 I actually remember this. Like, it was like right before I would actually do your videos, obviously, I was too young. But I remember when you were like that person. And so you basically were super driven all the time and created your own opportunities. I did. No, not one phone call came to me.
Starting point is 00:10:08 I was making those phone calls. Still to this day, I believe that all entrepreneurs are the ones to think of it and initiate. Right. Initiate for sure. I have a sin on everything I've done because I really believe in myself and I can do this. No, it's amazing.
Starting point is 00:10:26 So then the world went to VHS and I got an exercise video just like Jane Fonda. And I came out around the same time as Jane Fonda. You did? I did. Yeah. So just to make sure, at this point, you had the day break show, but then you moved to Washington.
Starting point is 00:10:43 Yeah. So did you have to give up the daybreak show? I had to, yes. Because I was going back and forth for a year. Oh, wow. So how long did you have the daybreak show? For a whole year. For one year.
Starting point is 00:10:52 OK. And then you said that book, the tone. Tone up at the terminal. So was that little booklet, you know, was it like a publisher and all that? I was just sponsored by verbatim corporation back in the day they made floppy discs. You know, so it was, but it was a, you know, but you were starting to build right
Starting point is 00:11:11 at the empire. So you already had like a couple little things that were big enough that you can leverage. So when you called, when you called the today's show, you're like, I have this, I got this. Oh, yes, I had tapes already of shows that I've done. I did AM Los Angeles. Right. You did a lot. Constantly I did the Hour Magazine show. I did anything to do with LA. I had done and, you know, locally, locally.
Starting point is 00:11:34 Right. So you were building. The magazine was national. So what? It was called Hour Magazine with Gary Collins back in the day. Oh my god. This is so, this is like seriously. It's my dear old friend. friend, still the sense of producer,
Starting point is 00:11:47 Marty Berman. So I stayed in touch with people my whole career. So in I came for, so I did the Today Show, so I was making a national name. How long were you doing that for? For four years, I had a contract. So for every month, what was your contract? What's a month?
Starting point is 00:12:01 Once a month. Yeah, I lived in Washington, DC. So to go New York was, it was easy. It was so easy. Yeah, I lived in Washington DC. So to go New York was crazy. It was so easy. Right. And so you're doing, and that really helped build your like popularity. Yes, and by the time I was also doing a lot of magazines, I'd go to Cosmo and do, you know, the 5 easy
Starting point is 00:12:16 stretches for your back or I'd go to, you know, another magazine and give them a woman's day magazine. I always had me prevention magazines. I did a lot of little, you know, little thing. And I did that. The Washington Post. I had my own column in the Washington Post by 1986.
Starting point is 00:12:33 Did you have a PR person at this point? Or you're just going to do this yourself? Well, my best friends from college helped me do PR, Mary Jane Levy. And she helped me and we kind of did it together because she was just starting and I was just starting. Right, right. And at this point, you're with your husband obviously.
Starting point is 00:12:49 Now he's a sports agent. So that he helped with your contracts and he helped your business. With the business contract, he would help read it and make a couple changes and that was it. So we were a good team. So then how did you get to our? It's new hard.
Starting point is 00:13:02 I mean, after 36 years of marriage, I mean, it's pretty amazing, actually. And he still reads over contracts. Wow. I think it's like, it's amazing to hear the evolution. Because of course, my background spitness to, and hearing how someone like you like started, it was hot, it was a hustle, even it was then without all the other, you know, noise and sense, like, and it wasn't, it wasn't cluttered. Right. So I feel
Starting point is 00:13:25 that there was more opportunity at that point to like shine. Yes, but you had to have more back then. It was, you had to have a lot of credibility. Yeah. Education was very important back then. That's what you had to go to the today's show and give fitness information. You know, this was very important back, you know, people cared, it was. And that's why you come by it honestly. You were back around as athletics. You went to school for that.
Starting point is 00:13:51 Yes. So you're like, as I said, you're the real deal. You're actually legit, which is amazing. And then you have the personality. That voice is exactly higher talking now. Come on, you can do it. Yes, but you do. And then I served to look and feel your best. Exactly, that's it. You deserve it. Do it for you. Yes. Come on, you can do it. Yes, but you do. You deserve to feel your best.
Starting point is 00:14:05 Exactly, that's a few. You deserve it. Do it for you. Yes. And then, really, I believe that. It's amazing. When you say it, like, it just spews out of your mouth. Like, I can never understand.
Starting point is 00:14:16 I remember even being a kid when I did this stuff. I'm like, how does she do it? How can she, she talks like that? She's so, like, she's she's so, you can feel the passion and the authenticity every single time you would open your mouth and tell people to keep on going and motivate people. Even through the commercial statement. Yeah, and that voice, I'll be right now. It's amazing. Did someone teach you or do you have to like, Laura, how did you learn to be so fluid? It was just me.
Starting point is 00:14:46 Being a gymnast and working hard as a gymnast is a young girl and competing, you had to show off a little exhibition type. You know, floor exercise. You got a floor. You work hard and now it's time to perform. So it came naturally to me. I wrote with routines because I used to have to choreograph floor exercises, or beam work. So I think it just was, you know, part of me. And when the music,
Starting point is 00:15:15 I love music exercises. It was just so fun. Now at the time it's just a Jane fond, it came out around the same time. And she really helped the sales because she made these VHS home videos more mainstream and popular because it was Jay Vonda coming out with the whole thing. And we're great friends. I was with her. I was going to ask you.
Starting point is 00:15:38 A lifetime achievement award. She invited me to even walk the red carpet with her. Really? Yes, she's wonderful. I love her. Oh, I love that. So she looks amazing. She does look amazing.
Starting point is 00:15:47 At 80. At 80. Yes. And so you guys were, I was going to ask, if you guys were competitive with each other. But no. No, she's a movie star. She's a thing like at the time when you guys were like doing.
Starting point is 00:15:57 No, no, no, no. I mean, she, you know, she sold millions. And then she had me, how many DVDs, not DVDs? Well, through my career, you know, I went from all the VHS Then I went to the DVD world. Yeah, and now online But I sold 25 million exercise videos and DVDs combined 25 million 25 million women out there They could have four five
Starting point is 00:16:24 I wonder how many actually like I wonder if everyone opened it like you know people always get very like 25 million women out there. They could have four or five. They could have. I wonder how many actually, like I wonder if everyone opened it. Like, you know, people always get very motivated and inspired and then they usually sit in the chorus sometimes. I do appearances and they are stacked when they come. I love it. They just sign the first one I ever did and VHS. I mean, we can't even have the machines anymore.
Starting point is 00:16:42 That's amazing. 25 million. 25 million. Yes, all together. This episode is brought to you by FX is the Bear. The hit series returns with Jeremy Allen White and the Golden Globe winning role of Karmie. He and the team will transform their family sandwich shop into a next-level spot, all while being forced to come together in new ways as they confront their past and reckon with who they want to be in the future.
Starting point is 00:17:06 FX is the bear. All episodes now streaming, only on Hulu. Vitamin water just dropped a new zero sugar flavor called with love. Get the taste of raspberry and dark chocolate for the all-warm, all fuzzy, all self Self Care, Zero Self Doubt You. Grab a With Love Today. Vitamin Water, Zero Sugar, Nourish Every You. Vitamin Water is a registered trademark of Glass O. And then when it, when it, remember Cathy, so Cathy Smith was all so involved.
Starting point is 00:17:39 She was right at the same time too, as Jane Fonda. So she, she, she, she, all of you started at the same time? Yeah. Pretty much. So who is the one like, at the same time too as Jane Fonda. So, she did. So, all of you start at the same time? Yeah, pretty much. So, who was the one like, I mean 1984's right when it was really blossoming? Are you friends with her too? Or I talked to you once in a while, I've seen her a long time.
Starting point is 00:17:57 Wow, because she was all, I moved away and I haven't seen her. I remember her too, but I don't know why, I don't know why, because you were literally everywhere. You were literally on TV, and every, this exact time when people would be watching those shows, like in the mornings, in the afternoons, those videos.
Starting point is 00:18:14 On ESPN, this is kind of a fun story. I was on every single day, twice a day, at six third in the morning, and then again, at like nine third in the morning, and then ESPN after 10 years you know 10 years of being on ESPN they came to being they said to knees. We are going to rerun Sports Center now in the morning so we'll put you over to ESPN too and I went Sports Center every hour you're just going read right. And now of course, of course. Of course, yeah.
Starting point is 00:18:45 Exactly. At first, my husband and I were in the meeting going, oh my God, really, Vee Run, does the same hour every day, every hour, the whole day. Said, yep, and they were right. So I did my go to ESPN at that time. I wanted to hit more women. And I wanted to be targeted for women
Starting point is 00:19:03 because that's who I really talked to and oh, they're in their living rooms I was in these people's homes for all these years. I was part of their family. Yeah, so now I love it because You know generations come up and say oh my god my mom used to work out every single day And you know, I remember you when I you know before I went to school and I heard your voice forever. Oh, the voice is so distinctive. Come on from the basement. It's true. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:19:30 Your voice, like, there's not many people's voice that are so distinct, but yours really is. I remember that too when my mom would do your videos also or my, or what I would do when I wasn't there. I can hear that, ah, that sweetness. If you always had that sweetness and like breathy kind of voice, that's so unique. And it's really who you are. Like now that they meet you,
Starting point is 00:19:53 I thought it was kind of like put on, but it's actually, you know what? Oh, it was my whole life. You are, and you are exactly what I, exactly how you are. It's amazing. Yeah. So then how, like, so what, how did you kind you kind of what do you kind of what's your big philosophy?
Starting point is 00:20:07 Right because I remember back then you're always about balance from what I remember. Yes. Yes. I truly believe in Grit balance and it's hard to have it all all at once. Right. It's sort of being through the different stages of life. I've had my two daughters being a mom, you know, it's hard because you want to be there for them, but you still want to keep your energy going up the business. So it wasn't until they were in high school and really great at LaCrosse that I had to kind of take a step back from my business because I wanted to be at every game. I love being a mom of athletes and I just didn't want to miss any of their games. You know, it worked so hard, you know, earned some athletic scholarships
Starting point is 00:20:47 themselves. So that to me was a dream. I'm so glad I did that spent the time at their high school years because that's when your kids really kind of need you more because they could go, you never know. Absolutely. Like direction they might get. And I met Katie. I didn't meet your other daughter, but she's like amazing. Oh,. That's like every parent's dream, right? She's super smart, she's just let it, she's on a scholarship at USC. I mean, it's a relationship you have,
Starting point is 00:21:13 you can tell that you were very involved and you were present. Yes, you know? But how do you, that's, I was actually really surprised to see it because I don't remember you ever taking a break like I don't remember you've Been really break I always was working and always doing DVDs at that point it was DVD Right you're always I never saw you even pregnant
Starting point is 00:21:35 Work I gain 35 pounds with each baby with did you did you do a video? Do we have that sort of million videos still to this day? It's one of the top That's all the million videos still to this day. It's one of the top pregnancy workout videos in the nation ever to be sold That video now always I'm gonna see it They're already exactly right right always sold out. Yeah And then like you lost it fast though because well I had to go I Did it you know? Well, I didn't try to I never have starved myself ever.
Starting point is 00:22:05 No, I know, that's what I'm saying. I don't ever miss a meal. Jen, I love food. I think about food. I love everything. I love a hamburger. I love food. I love dessert.
Starting point is 00:22:15 I love the drink. I love to have fun. And I think that's part of it because I never have been so strict with myself, never. And I think I've kind of lived the life of the, oh Friday night, sure, I have a couple of little margaritas of course we're going out, you know. So I never was,
Starting point is 00:22:34 one to give up anything. How are you, do you have a fast metabolism because you're working out? Well, I think muscles work miracles on your metabolism. And if the more muscles you you have the more calories you burn So I'm a true believer Especially as women as we age to you know firm up the muscles so nothing droops or say right that's so I think this is why I think muscle cells are so active all that rest and I do believe that because I
Starting point is 00:23:01 Feel like I keep up with my Toning waitlist that because I feel like I keep up with my toning weightlifting training. Yes, and with every way I still... You don't do heavy? Well, I try not to because of joints now, you know, I'm 63, so I have to protect all my joints, but good posture is the key. So everybody stand up really tall or sit up wherever you are, and suck in the gun, pull it in, tighten up those tummy muscles,
Starting point is 00:23:22 and really think of re-educating the muscles because posture gives you energy. And energy is what you need to think better, to feel good, and have good energy, and that's the key. So then what's your diet like? Well, give me an example, like day to day, not when you go from margaritas, but what do you eat? Most days of the week I cook at home,
Starting point is 00:23:43 so I try to be you know I know what I'm cooking I go I do have lots of fruits and vegetables but breakfast this morning for instance I had eggs scrambled and in that I put a little bit of parsley chives and spinach and I did a real eggs I don't use joste like I use sometimes I do two eggs and throw in an extra egg bite. Right. To get a little more protein. I had a piece of toast and a salad dough. You eat carbs. Woohoo! I just had one piece of sourdough toast and I put avocado on it. So there, that's my, a lot of my mornings. Sometimes I do. Do you have both? Do you have avocado toast and eggs? Yes, but just a little avocado. One half of a sourdough toast.
Starting point is 00:24:26 I love sourdough. I know, I love that too. And then I put a drizzle of olive oil on it. And then around 10, 30, I wake up early. So what time do you wake up? Six. Yeah, give me your day. We'll give you your morning routine.
Starting point is 00:24:38 I'm okay, my morning routine. Give me your whole day. Okay, Jen. I wake up at six o'clock. I wake up happy. I'm sure you do. I'm happy I'm alive. You. I wake up happy. I'm sure you do. I'm happy on the live. You walk.
Starting point is 00:24:47 You genuinely happy. Yeah, and then I get up and I get my phone. Right. Right. See if anyone's texted me, the texts are more important in case my kids are whatever. And then I go downstairs and have a big glass of water. I love it with a lemon. Right. I do put a half of I mean I really squeeze it with lemon then I make coffee and then when you put in your coffee. Oh, that's a bummer
Starting point is 00:25:16 Cream. Oh, I don't happen half me too. Yeah, yeah organic me too grass fin so I'm I'm doing okay And you know, I only have a good cup of coffee. I don't have two or three, I have one good cup. Okay. What kind of coffee do you like to drink? I switch it up, but I like, I don't know if you've heard of Verve.
Starting point is 00:25:35 Yeah, it's delicious. It's very good. Yeah. So I buy high-end coffee beans because I grind my own coffee beans and then have my coffee. I'm like, that's what I love. Good cup of coffee and a good glass of red wine. So you're like a old school, okay?
Starting point is 00:25:52 Yeah, I love it. And you have your breakfast. Yeah, okay. And I put in a lot of veggies, some diet, whatever I have to make those. And I'll even touch up feta some mornings or whatever. And then around 10, 30, I have a little something. I always need something because it keeps me going.
Starting point is 00:26:09 So today, before I came to you, I had just a little thing of plain yogurt with strawberries and blueberries. Oh, okay. And what kind of yogurt do you like? I buy just the plain Greek yogurt. Oh, Greek yogurt, okay. And then for lunch, you'll have what?
Starting point is 00:26:25 Today I'll probably have I love salmon salad. I love chicken salad. But you have a sandwich once in a while. Oh, you know. Are you watching your portion or no? Yeah portions I care about. You do watch. Okay. Like I have a couple bites of things and a couple, you know, it depends what I'm making that day. I, uh, some days I just eat whatever I have in the refrigerator, I pit. We did it. I still can't believe we got this project done so fast and so well. When I'm in New York, I'm in Chicago and I'm in LA. But?

Starting point is 00:27:50 You believe it because a lot of people, people who come on this podcast who are super super about regimen and and and high achievers who want to be be the best at what's everything you do. They of course are all in, everyone's into intermittent fasting, keto diets, no carbs, fat in the coffee, all that kind of stuff. It seems like you're so just not interested in even attempting. I've done intermittent fasting and it worked for me. It did work for you. It did work for me.
Starting point is 00:28:21 I did like it. I did how long did you do it? How long? Oh, I did three days. Oh did how long ago? How long ago? Oh, I did three days. Oh. And it worked in three days? I felt different.
Starting point is 00:28:29 And we all, my stomach was flatter. Really? I ate less, which is what you're trying to get at. Right. But I like to eat a little something a little more. Like I put walnuts in my salad. Right. I eat healthy, but I don't, I'm not always thinking about,
Starting point is 00:28:45 who am I gonna be like the best I can, I don't think like that. I just, and it works, and I think to my point, why I even brought that up, not to interrupt you. I just water. I love water. But I think a lot of times, especially with wellness now has become such a money maker that more so than ever before,
Starting point is 00:29:04 every day there is a new fat, there's a new trend. And I believe it's my opinion that all these things are actually making people gain more weight and be less healthy because no one knows what to do and they keep, oh, it's going to be keto today. It's going to be this one tomorrow. It's going to be this, and there's such confusion as opposed to just like going old school where you know what, fruits are not bad for you, but people want to tell you that fruits bad, fruits natural.
Starting point is 00:29:30 I love fruits. Yeah, but I always pair it with something like, you know, yogurt or like a protein or a fat. Oh, okay. And I love avocado. I do. That's a big thing. I could probably eat one a day.
Starting point is 00:29:44 Oh, easy one a day. That's like easy. And then big thing. I could probably eat one a day. Oh, easy. Yeah. That's like easy. And then you have your dinner and it's like you just dinner. Well, one thing about dinner is I do try to eat a little lighter dinner. Okay. I naturally have my whole life. So I think dinner to me to sit late at night and eat a lot at home.
Starting point is 00:30:01 I have, I don't do. So what do you have? Whoa. And what time do you have? Whoa. Last night, bus seven, six, 30. Okay, so that's not, so when you did your three day intermittent, what time is it, were you eating at? I started eating at 11, but I cheated.
Starting point is 00:30:15 I had my coffee in the morning. I had to have a shower. They say it's okay to do that though. Oh, okay, whatever. Yeah. So I started 11, I did mainly the same food I always do. Right. And then I was done by seven. I think seven is a good time for me to finish dinner. Even if you're on intermittent or not, or not, or not. Did you, did you snack? Like, did you, at night, not when you're on intermittent,
Starting point is 00:30:38 but would you have like a, like a dessert or a snack? Oh, once in a while, I'm going to go get some ice cream. But not all the time. Not all the time. No, wow. Because if I'm home, I make a nice dinner, I usually chicken or salmon, or I once in a while have grass-fed beef. I make chicken or steak tacos, and I'll put it on a corn tortilla, and I'll put cilantro,
Starting point is 00:31:03 all kinds of veggies on it, And I'll just have one, but you know, almost like a street taco. Right, right, right. I love that. So you always cook. You always cook for your fitness. I always did cook, uh, sit down, meal for my kids when they're little. So all the time, you know, I travel a lot to film me my show. Right. So when I'd film my show, I'd go for a week film five shows a day. Right. You know, I'd go for a week, film five shows a day, you know, banking a lot of shows, get home and I'm just a mom.
Starting point is 00:31:28 I just, you know, I'd speak on the phone for business, but I would say, hey, they're home by four, I'm done, you know, just call me before four. Yeah, I'm curious how it would work. That's what I was wondering because like you, because I can't talk on the phone and give my thoughts with my kids there. It was very hard on me, because I work't talk on the phone and give my thoughts with my kids there. It was very hard on me because I work out the house. So I would tell all the business people who called call between 8 and 4 when they were young that needed my attention.
Starting point is 00:31:55 Right, because I find it to be really difficult. Because as a kid, with young kids and you're an entrepreneur, because that's what you were, you're hustling like you killed with you 8, right? You're hustling like, you killed what you ate, right? Yeah. So you weren't working in a corporate job where you went to, so I was very curious how you were able to balance it and do it well.
Starting point is 00:32:14 Like I saw your kids are very adjusted, they're very close with you. And so how much were you traveling? You went away for a week to like shoot, like to do a lot of that. Yeah, once a month for a week I'd be gone. Oh wow. So that was a lot, that. One month for a week I'd be gone. Oh wow. So that was a lot.
Starting point is 00:32:26 My husband was really good with the kids. Sometimes I brought him and then when my mommy was alive she would come and meet me at places and help me when they're little. But once they got in the middle school you can't get him out of school. Right. It's impossible. It's stupid to leave, let them. So Jeff would be there for them and we always had one parent home all the time.
Starting point is 00:32:47 Right. Because he traveled to, he represented basketball players, tennis players. So he was a big agent. He was big. Yeah, he is. So we worked around his schedule always. So if there it was, you know, championship time during the NBA,
Starting point is 00:33:03 there's no way I'd film a show during those times. So we had it down after 24 years. We had it down. Right, but you had dinner as a family though, you said. Oh yeah, I can leave in that. Because we would hear everything during that dinner. Right, and I also used to love picking them up from school because that's when I'd pick up
Starting point is 00:33:21 the other kids in the neighborhood and learn a lot about your kids. That's right, that's how you find them every time. What did the neighborhood and learn a lot about your kids. That's right. That's how you find them every time. Kelly, did what did you say? Why'd you get in trouble? Right. Oh, why'd you get in trouble?
Starting point is 00:33:31 Right. So you were very present for like three weeks of the month at least, where you were like, you were picking them up or taking them to school or whatever. That's why, because I always think it's really hard to have it all at one time. That's why I said, you can have it all, but not at all at once. You get little here, little there, but then you do have it all, I promise. Exactly, right?
Starting point is 00:33:50 But it's also the attitude. Like I keep on saying it over and over again. You seem genuinely happy and positive. Yeah, you know, I think as I grew up, my mom always taught us to laugh at ourselves. We really, we're five kids, and we really have all good sense of ourselves. We did take ourselves seriously. She would laugh at herself.
Starting point is 00:34:15 I think that helped me because I was the most entrepreneur of one of the family. They don't get her, and they all helped me. Right. See that way. See that way. Be that way. Because, you know, one was taking care of the house and I didn't have to do the dishes because my other sister was so sweet, she did the dishes because I was a gymnast
Starting point is 00:34:33 and they all took care of me and picked me up. Right, right, right, right. I kind of supported you basically. Yes, and they still do. And they still do. Yeah, back in the day when I had my VHS, they made sure it was all front and center, and all targets, and all words of course.
Starting point is 00:34:49 And all the Costco's are right after. More from our guest, but first a few words from our sponsor. Starting point is 00:35:41 Visit Asana.com to get started. So then how do you, how do you evolve? Like as the business started to change, what did you, like how did you change with it, right? Well, I, I love to reinvent myself, you know, I thought it was really exciting now the internet and I had some great people who came to me, you know, people at Everyday Health,
Starting point is 00:36:03 they came and said, you need to have a website now. Oh, okay. You know what? Tell them what Everyday Health, I have the most people know what it is. Well, years ago, they were one of the first to take care of a lot of people like myself. Also, they did South Beach diet.
Starting point is 00:36:18 They did the pregnancy to know what was in the abdomen. Which one? What's the expected one? Yeah, what's it? What's it? What's it? What's it? What's it? What's it?
Starting point is 00:36:30 What's it? What's it? What's it? What's it? What's it? What's it? What's it? What's it?
Starting point is 00:36:38 What's it? What's it? What's it? What's it? What's it? What's it? What's it? What's it? What's it? What's it? What's it? So what they would do is pick. We even get into that. A book. And then we would emphasize that for the website for a year. Then the next book.
Starting point is 00:36:47 And that would be the 12 best sellers. Yeah. 12-year-old. For a whole thing of fitness. I remember best sellers on New York times. But best sellers in, I don't know, different ones. But back then, I mean, what was the best, what's it? Shoot your female fat zones or something. But they were selling everywhere. I mean, there's like, do you have Amazon back then, I mean, what was the best, what's it, shoot your female fat zones or something.
Starting point is 00:37:05 But they were selling everywhere. I mean, there's like, you have Amazon back then, but you're in Amazon. But you were best seller in what way, Dukes. I remember they were best seller. Just help them fit in this category. Right, you were selling, how many books did you sell? Altogether.
Starting point is 00:37:18 Oh, I don't know. You don't know? No, I don't know. Nothing like videos. Videos and books were, I mean, my video sold big, you know, it's really, right? No, I don't know. Nothing like videos. Videos and books were, I mean, my videos sold big, you know, it's really nice. I mean, your videos. Follow me. People love it. Yeah. Yeah. So books never did as well as videos. That's for sure. Well, I'm maybe not 25 million, but I bet you sold millions. I don't even know. Really? Yeah. Isn't that funny? Oh wow.
Starting point is 00:37:42 Then I created Denise Austin exercise products. I was big on TVC for the years of QVC. You did QVC? I did QVC? Yes. For how many years did you do the QVC? Oh my God, a good 15. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:37:55 Wow, could you also had, I saw your, I guess you had like licenses with like other, yeah, stuff like that. I got my own, you know, exercise ball back in the day. And bands and hats. And you were selling wearer, like, wearer at the time. A big at Walmart. Yeah, so I have my own, you know, exercise ball back in the day. And man and man. And you were selling wearer, like, at the time, a big at Walmart. Yeah, big at Walmart. Walmart and back in the day, came ours came our,
Starting point is 00:38:12 I thought I could only remember. Target, all those places. Best buy from my DVDs. Everything. Okay, so go back to everyday health story. So they would take care of like, so they would take care of the website. And then that was awesome because I didn't know,
Starting point is 00:38:26 I didn't even have an email. You know, they made sure I got an email. And so it just started and then little by little. And I didn't really know about YouTube. So I kind of lost that little generation. And now my daughter does it. So I'm learning now. That's been so great to have a daughter.
Starting point is 00:38:48 It gives me that new sense of, yeah, I'm in on this, because I do mother-daughter workouts, and she asks me questions about the business. I feel like I'm mentoring her, and I have a new reason to keep going with my business. I don't like focus on women mainly over 50, new reason to keep going with my business. No, absolutely. And I'm like, focus on women mainly over 50 to get them to, you know, what, we all need to eat better,
Starting point is 00:39:11 but also have a better attitude. A lot of my friends, they're trying to figure out their kids are in college. Now, what do I do? They're smart. They were, you know, top in their companies. And yet, they a lot took off to you know build their business. I mean take care of their kids. Yeah. Yeah. They're all ready to start something
Starting point is 00:39:30 anew. Well I feel like also you said like if you're focusing on people 50 and over I feel like isn't that the same dress? Don't people like DVDs? Like I mean I'm still selling DVDs. You must be still selling these DVDs. Yeah. And then not in the store so you can't physically go to a brick and mortar, but they're all on my website. Because that's still the market that would buy these DVDs. Oh my people love them, right? Yes, I still do them. And like, you can, why can't you make new DVDs?
Starting point is 00:39:57 Yeah, I've been making DVDs. You've been making DVDs. DVDs, and I have a 10 week plan on my website that everyone has really loved. Really? Every day you get a workout video, you get what to eat, a meal plan, and then throughout the week I kind of send you an email, you can do it, keep going. Right, right.
Starting point is 00:40:16 It's a motivation of 10 week plan and it's all online. So it's a true 10 week plan to tell you exactly how to move, how to think, and how to eat. How do you keep it different, though? You've been doing this for so long. You're a boat balance. You're about eating, you know, in moderation, but eating everything and not like not having a life. You're about like socializing and like living. Oh, yeah. My girlfriend's being the world. Right. You do have to be.
Starting point is 00:40:43 You're not like restrictive. No. How do you keep it unique?'s being the world. Right, you do have, you're not like restrictive. No, so then how do you keep it unique? Oh, the workouts. So not just that, no, the diet plans and the way I guess also the workouts. Well, the diet plans, I have really changed what I am. Years ago, we didn't even have kale. So I mean, I think you do.
Starting point is 00:40:59 For cauliflower, the kids being right now. Yes, and with black seed. Right. So I am around a lot of doctors, because of what you do. Dr. Wilde, Dr. Aiman, who's so brilliant and brain-hale. So I learn from, I'm still learning. I love to learn the newest ways to eat healthier because food is medicine. Yeah. And I believe that. So I am constantly reaching out to them and then getting information to help my lady. Yeah. And I believe that. So I am constantly reaching out to them and then getting information to help my lady. Okay. Now I do a little flexi over my yogurt just to add a little
Starting point is 00:41:33 bit of omega-3s. We all need that for hair. Right. To evolve as the times evolve. Yes, I have. Right. And I like that. Yeah. It makes it more exciting. And now to film with an iPhone, it's so easy. I used to have to have a whole set up with 20 people for a video. I know. Now it's my daughter just sets up the iPhone, puts it right there for me and I can dock. I say what kind of work goes do you like to do for yourself? Oh, I love to walk for fitness. I walk really fast. You have a lot of walking videos, too, don't you? Well, I have walking in place. In a place? Yeah, walking in place.
Starting point is 00:42:07 Oh, I have a video. Any real walking videos? I thought you did. Well, it was a video. I mean, it was very fun. No, this is different. You know, doing it like this. But, um, if you feel like it.
Starting point is 00:42:16 Yeah, so I have a huge, a big mess all of walking videos. Okay, so I was not mistaken. Right. It's not outside. It's all done inside. But you walk three miles in that course of 38 minutes. Right, oh wow.
Starting point is 00:42:27 Yeah, so it's all timed and steps, it's all about steps. I'm into steps, I do do that. You do steps, like I mean steps, like not- No, I make sure I get 10,000 steps today. Oh, you make that, okay. I do believe that, I do do about 10 minutes of toning every day. Okay, so I switch it up a lot. So you go for walks, I know you walk with Pam, my friend. Ah, yeah, I'm sitting every day. OK, so I switch it up a lot. So you go for walks.
Starting point is 00:42:45 I know you walk with Pam, my friend. Yeah, I'm sitting over there. Hi, Pam. So how long do you guys walk for every day? About 45 minutes. OK. And then are you walking at a brisk pace then? If we're holding coffee, no.
Starting point is 00:42:58 But we get rid of our coffee. Yeah, let's go back to my arms. OK, good. And then I come back and I do stretching and I do toning. I go to a couple of my girlfriends yoga classes because I lump them. Okay. And I always do like 10 minutes a day,
Starting point is 00:43:12 either abs, arms, body parts. Body parts, I'm really into body parts. I still believe in that. Yeah. Target toning exercises. All the muscles really do need to be firmed up. Right, so I love to do that. So you'll do like a Monday but Tuesday abs, Wednesday arms.
Starting point is 00:43:30 Yes. And that's what the 10 week plan is. I like that. It's three to four days of cardio and build you up. Then it's most days of the week. Some toning, 10 minutes. Sometimes you could do 20. Right. Two a day if you want to a day. How do you not like and how do you not have you how do 20. Right. You have to a day if you want to a day. How do you, and you're not like, and how do you, how do you, how do you,
Starting point is 00:43:47 something like you, how do you keep your muscles confused? Because you've done it literally everything. Everybody try pickleball. I'll play tennis on the weekends with my husband, which he runs me for 15 minutes. Wow. That's all I want to do. Yeah. I've tried to spin. I've really changed it up through my life. You know, gone from Pilates to stepper O-Biggs to...
Starting point is 00:44:05 So I've done it all. I love stepper O-Biggs. I don't know why it's become like kind of arcade. Oh, we had so much fun at that. Oh, it's amazing. And it's a good workout. Yes. I bought back all my TV shows.
Starting point is 00:44:17 Yeah. So good for you. And they're all on my website. Digitized 200, half an hour shows. So all of these women are loving it because they want the old vatch ones. They like the running and blaze. A lot of the way it works.
Starting point is 00:44:31 Yes, it works. This is the thing, I would always, people wanna find a magic pill. It is, I'm gonna say, I'm a big hit person. That's gonna ask who you thought of hit. I love it. I love it too. Obviously.
Starting point is 00:44:43 But I was gonna say that old school is what works the best. And when you see people, Mark Wahlberg, you, whatever, a lot of people I know who are like basically old school, they look the fittest, they are the fittest, but people try to find these new hybrids in the world. I do, and I kind of sometimes make a little fusion, you know, of a little yoga, little Pilates, a little weights, and I do that for 30 minutes some days. But circuit training and my, circuit training, toning, you need people need to be lifting weights
Starting point is 00:45:16 in a circuit to keep your heart rate up. And you have to keep going. And you have to keep on going. And that's all, to me, that's why I think it's all cool. And you can do that in 20 minutes to be done. And be finished. And be finished. Right, do that a lot. Do you use, like, do you use, like, when you say you lift,
Starting point is 00:45:28 what kind of, what would you, for arms, you? What would you use? Well, this morning, I did it. I did five pounds in each hand. Okay. Then I did seven point five up or back, and like, like, on ground, like, my chest. I do, I do three sets of of each or what are you doing?
Starting point is 00:45:45 I do about, I don't count. I hate you. I do a song. I blast the music in my house. You do so each exercise you do it to a song. Yeah, pretty well. Well, you do it like it must be like hundred and a thousand. No, no, I'll do this, the press, then I'll land the side
Starting point is 00:46:00 and do a couple leg lifts and you know, waistline. I just keep moving. You just keep on moving. And you know waistline. I just keep moving. You just keep on moving. And you're by your response, I guess, though, could you move it, change it all the time? I'm always changing it because I do do other activities too. Do you do interval training? Yes.
Starting point is 00:46:15 I have interval training. Right. So do do those were my best sellers on DVDs too. Really exactly. They do very well. Yeah. So you do like three minutes cardio, one. So you do like, three minutes cardio, one and a half minute toning,
Starting point is 00:46:27 three minutes cardio, one and a half minutes, a different muscle. I need to do your exercises now, your workouts. I need to, I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna go to your website.
Starting point is 00:46:35 And like, how do I do it? I'll give you a log in. Would you give me a high swear? I'm gonna do it. You gotta do it. Cause some days you can do old school ones for my TV shows. And some days you could do new ones.
Starting point is 00:46:45 I have over 200 old ones and a hundred new ones. Well, whatever you're doing, you look amazing. I think you do. You don't look any, it really isn't missing. You don't look any different than you look some years ago. Wow, gotta keep it up. Well, it's working for you. Oh, thank you.
Starting point is 00:47:01 No, it's amazing. So that's how you're kind of like. And it works, everybody. If you just stick with it, you know, you're nice and young and you have a little kid. Just stick with it. Consistency does pay off. I promise.
Starting point is 00:47:12 It's all of the consistency. It is. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter what you do, as long as you do something. Right, exactly. Along those muscles or moving, moving the case. And doing that.
Starting point is 00:47:22 And another good thing I always tell people is try to get off that chair, try to get off that rear end and just stand and talk on the phone or like what we're doing. Yeah. Even if it's slow, it's so good for you. Your circulation, circulation is what's going to heal your body. So if something's bothering you, you need to move to get the oxygen to feed to the cells.
Starting point is 00:47:44 Oh, I'm absolutely good. That's why I like doing this podcast on treadmill. Yeah. Because at least you're moving and you're talking, you're not just sitting on your butt and just staring at each other. Oxygen starts to flow to the brain. It does.
Starting point is 00:47:55 It makes you fight. It's great for your cognitive functioning, right? It's key. It is key. OK, wait, I want to... What was the other question I had for you? Oh, yeah. So about all these wellness trends, forget about the food for a second. Is there any?
Starting point is 00:48:08 What do you think like is there any kind of thing that you're doing besides the eating and the exercise that are kind of part of your daily life? I started to meditate. I do about five minutes. That's my little thing. Okay. That's a lot for me even fine Yeah, five minutes and I have to just totally just let it go. And it works for you. It really does. It's only been like a year and a half that I've been on a regular basis to in five minutes. Are you doing it just like with an app or are you going to look at it? No, I just do it to myself. It's just sit there. Really? I take a breath and then sometimes I lie down to Shavasana. You know, through those years of all the jokas, that's kind of can just figure it out. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:48:46 And I live near the beach, so I can just relax, put up my doors, and I love nature. I love being outside, so everybody will feel better. I like a little sunshine. I like a little fresh air. Even I lived in the East Coast for 30 years. I got outside all the time. Did you oh heck yeah I didn't want to be stuck in a house yeah I got out I did
Starting point is 00:49:10 walks with girlfriends we would wrap ourselves even back then when it's cold. Oh yes I believe in just getting air and oxygen and I only use a little sunscreen on my face and I try to get vitamin D 30 minutes most days. I try. Do you? So you still be put sunscreen on your face but not your body or yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Body because we do on your face. Only for 30 minutes because 30 minutes takes about that much, 20 minutes to absorb. And if you have sunscreen, you're not really getting the absorbs and that I believe in. Then go back in and if you're going to lay out, that's a different story. Right. But this is if you're going to lay out, that's a different story.
Starting point is 00:49:45 But this is if you're going for a walk or it's nice weathered. I agree. I think people are very vitamin D deficient. And they don't even know. And if people think if you live in California, you have the sun that you won't be. But when you get your blood checked, it's amazing. You both should get their blood checked
Starting point is 00:50:01 because it's amazing how many people are deficient. So that's right. When you put the sunscreen on, it's not able to. It's not like getting what your body needs to absorb the sun. Right. I take vitamin D supplements because of that. Good. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:50:15 Yeah. You should, I mean, people should try that. Everybody should, yeah. Do you take any supplements at all? Yeah. I take this one. Okay. I like what you even asked you by the way because of that.
Starting point is 00:50:23 Okay. I just looked out there and there's the one. Which is true, NIAG. It's basically NAD, it's a precursor. It's amazing, actually. And that wasn't the purposeful plug. I really was just asking. And then I have another company, Juvenant, that I love their Omega-3s, because I believe
Starting point is 00:50:40 in Omega-3s. I take Omega-3s too. Yes, that's a good one. Really great one. Oh, okay. Natural. I take Nordic natural. I take Omega 3's too. Yes, that's a good one. Really great one. Yes, natural. I take Nordic natural. Yes, that's good too. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:50:49 And then I also take a tumor. You take tumor. Yeah, it's a pill. It's a vitamin. Which a tumor. And do you think it makes a difference? I don't know. I know.
Starting point is 00:50:58 That's the thing. I'm still so good. That's all I can. I exactly. I'm never sure. You know, because how do you? How do you? It helps with inflammation. Yeah, I'm never sure, you know, because how do you, how do you, how do you, it helps with inflammation?
Starting point is 00:51:05 And I don't even know if I've inflammation. I go, you know, of course I go to the doctor regularly, but I'm, oh, you're good, Denise, okay. You know exactly. So, you know, what do you think of like cryotherapy, red light therapy? Yes.
Starting point is 00:51:19 Like, infrared sauna. Yeah, I need to learn more about it. Right. I would like to learn more. Because every day, there's a different thing. I see different forces, yeah need to learn more about it. Right. I would like to learn more. Because every day, if I get different things. I see different forces, you know, athletes have been doing it for years. That's important.
Starting point is 00:51:30 Cool. So I think that would be really cool. And that Info Red, there's so much good research. No, there is great. I just haven't done it yet. Really? I'm going to try it with you. Okay, I have one.
Starting point is 00:51:41 I have one actually. I have an extra one. I'm going to lend it to you. Okay. Because I do have an extra one. Because people are like, people, to you. People hear so much stuff all the time. It's very hard to decipher what's going to be good, what's going to be bad. You know what I mean? I believe that so much of the stuff is just a big industry. It's hard to decipher what's going to be valuable. It's hard to really decipher what's going to be valuable or what's not.
Starting point is 00:52:05 I agree. It's hard to figure out what's going to be best for you. Everyone's so different. Oh, absolutely. Exactly. So that's why I'm curious what you do. What you, what kind of wellness or what kind of way. Do you know what I like?
Starting point is 00:52:15 What? Epsin salt bath. I do take an Epsin salt bath. You can't. Old school, but it works. But it works. Shut up. OK, so sorry.
Starting point is 00:52:23 But the old school day. I know. No, no, sorry. Oh, damn! No, no, no, no. But those are the things that I think actually do something. Yeah, yeah, it does. I feel so good. My muscles feel so good afterwards. How often do you do it?
Starting point is 00:52:34 And I love massage. I do believe in massage. You do. I love that too. I do do foam rolling. That's a new school. Oh, new school. I do.
Starting point is 00:52:42 I do. I do. I do. You do that. Oh, yeah. I love homerolling. That's going to save you. I'm going to leave in that. How are you not injured after so many years of, you know, basically, banging and banging.
Starting point is 00:52:53 Yeah, to me. I don't want to, like, knock on wood. I stretch. You do stretch. I get my balance of my workouts have kept me healthy through my whole career. Yeah. Even as a gymnast. So all I, I'm a big believer believer in stretching like I'll stretch right now.
Starting point is 00:53:06 And this is so good for you. Back it feels so good. I love to stretch my hamstrings. Yeah, I'll do this if I sit I'll make sure I stretch. Yeah, in the airplane. Here's my tip. Yeah, I flex and point my toes all the time. I drink for every hour of you fly, drink a glass of water. So let's say you're going on a four hour flight, make sure you drink four glasses of water throughout that plane. I love that tip. Because it keeps the humidity and your skin, and energy when you land, I have to be on TV,
Starting point is 00:53:36 you have to feel good. I love that tip. Can you tell us, give us three more great tips to stay healthy. Oh, okay, good-for-sh. I'm a big believer in posture. So you have to really think about it. Because if you're slouching,
Starting point is 00:53:48 your tummy has nowhere else to go but pooch out. Yeah. So if you have a place to stay, it's tucked in. So more you practice that naturally, your stomach will be flat. Also, it's better for breathing activity for your lung capacity. So you could take deeper breaths.
Starting point is 00:54:03 When this is happening, you know, it's all stale breath. You're not getting the lungs working and elasticity in your lungs. So that's... Give a six pack and you're 63. Yeah, Jesus Christ. I mean, what, I mean, people should be... I'm gonna do what she's, I know it's unbelievable.
Starting point is 00:54:17 She really is all natural. I'm doing nothing else. It's unbelievable. People take, I'm taking, whatever she says, I'm gonna listen to. Okay, so that's a good one. So stand with your posture. Always think that.
Starting point is 00:54:27 Always be calm instead of that. So get in the tummy, like practice it. Feel like you're wearing a corset throughout the day. Yeah, I'll. Even if you're sitting or standing any time, any time anywhere. Another great one I always do is squats. You know, while bull dry my hair,
Starting point is 00:54:42 or I do, I call them fidget-sizers. So when you're doing other things like you're waiting for your coffee to brew, do a couple leg lifts from the back to squeeze your butt, lifts that tushy. If you don't squeeze it, no one else will. That's right. Ha ha ha.
Starting point is 00:54:57 She's so quiet. She's so cute. Okay, so in today's time, who would you say that you like in the fitness space? So who would you say are people that you think are doing doing a good job? Oh, God. Besides, of course, your daughter. I'm earning from my daughter.
Starting point is 00:55:10 I didn't know a lot of who is out there because it's all on Instagram. It's a whole different medium. Now, different ones. Yeah. So a lot of people who are, I mean, I'm glad I met your daughter because I said like, and I'm not just saying this because you're her mom, but you can tell that she's like a smart girl. She's called, you know, she didn't call her, she was an athlete also. Right. And she's, you know, I feel like she, I like her.
Starting point is 00:55:32 Like, you can tell that she's a legit source too. She comes from you and you can help her. She's a good girl. But there's so many people that you just don't know. I have a couple of them I've met before, recently, and they don't really look the same. I was like, oh my gosh. They don't, that's what I'm saying. I don't know how to do these filters
Starting point is 00:55:57 that a lot of people do on their Instagram. And they don't talk about fit. They're not. They don't understand it. They don't know. They're more fit models. They look good on the pictures. Yes. They don't understand it. They don't know. They're more fit models. They look good on the pictures. They fit models.
Starting point is 00:56:08 But if you ask them about just talking, they don't talk in front of the camera. So that has been very confusing to me. And they don't have to sign in or they don't understand the biomechanics. So they're just doing exercise. But they look good. But they look good.
Starting point is 00:56:22 Exactly. So I don't call those people fitness professionals. I problem more like Instagram models who are like doing a good job. But the problem is a lot of people who don't know they don't know what they don't know right now. Everybody they follow the people who they're getting they're getting advice in the health and fitness space. People who don't know what they're talking about. And that's that's dangerous. Yeah, I know. You know, I don't know what they're talking about. And that's dangerous. Yeah, I know. I don't know when it's going to flush out. I don't either.
Starting point is 00:56:48 Because everything now is about using your phone, like all the different apps, and people are doing all their stuff from the social media influencers who are selling their two-week plan or two-week plan, or their skinny tea. Or their skinny tea, which is like, but like you think that by now, people don't want to know those things. They don't want to know that you have to just eat rice, exercise consistently.
Starting point is 00:57:14 And I personally believe you don't have to exercise that hard, that much, that off. You 30 minutes a day is great. If you could do 30 minutes a day, most days of the week, you're doing great. And then build from there. Right, I agree with that too. So is there anybody that you think is good
Starting point is 00:57:31 in the health space that you'd like to follow? Is it to have to be fitness per se? It can be anything in the health space. Well, you know, I love Dr. Mark Heimann. I believe that he says, I, you know, he's so smart. Very knowledgeable. Very knowledgeable.
Starting point is 00:57:44 I love Dr. Aiman for Brain Health and Brain Information. I love Maria Schreiber, her soul, and her, just her as a mom and the forgiveness and what she stands for. And I have met just so many wonderful people, and they're, oh, that's why I fall. Yeah, that's what you're following, right So who could one more question and I can get I'll let you out of here. Um, this case, so you're you have the programs on your website. Yes. Okay, what else are you, what else are you up to?
Starting point is 00:58:15 I have a new magazine coming out. I'm so excited. I helped you lifestyle. Which will come out four times a year. You have it. You're a magazine. My magazine with Bauer Publishing. Oh. My first one comes out in March, the end of March. And I'm really excited because I get to write it with top doctors who have researched different types of things.
Starting point is 00:58:36 And this has been what I've been working on for a long time. That's great. So I'm really, really excited about that. What's it called? Well, it's fit after 50, Denise Austin fit after 50. And that's where you can, is it going to be it online? On my grocery store, it'll be at every checkout stand for Walmart target.
Starting point is 00:58:57 What? Are you just bringing it up now? If I didn't say anything, you wouldn't have said anything? Yeah, that's my biggest thing right now, and I'm so excited about that. That's a huge. Yeah. Why did you bring it up?
Starting point is 00:59:07 You wouldn't have. Oh my gosh. That's a great, that's great. I mean, I didn't even know you were doing that. Yes, brand new. So March 1st. March 23rd. Oh, March 23rd.
Starting point is 00:59:17 Yeah, March 23rd. Oh my, I'm so, congratulations. That's a really big deal. Oh, that's really big. Oh, cool. I'm so excited. Is there anything else that you're like, do you have a movie coming up that you don't know? I'm excited. I feel like you're like, that's a big one. Just be that's really big. Oh, cool. I'm excited. Is there anything else that you're like, do you have a movie coming out that you don't know?
Starting point is 00:59:26 I'm excited. I feel like you're like, that's a big one. Just be like, oh yeah, by the way, I have a new magazine that's gonna be like sold everywhere. You know, where books are or wherever magazines are being sold. The checkout stands, so you'll be looking at it. That's actually a huge thing because people are now every magazine.
Starting point is 00:59:40 Quokers, stay everyone. Because every magazine feels like kind of collapsing. It's an interesting time to be going out in the magazine in the publishing space. I think I have some other products that I'm looking at to really get behind because I really believe in them. So we'll see. We'll have to have you again to talk about that.
Starting point is 01:00:02 This has been awesome. I'm so happy that I had the chance to talk to you. Oh, thank you. You're amazing. Oh, you're doing that. Thank you. And you're always. And this is the habits and hustle.
