Starting point is 00:00:55 episode, we are talking about the high performance mindset, what actually the high performance mindset is, and how anybody can achieve high performance. In February, I was asked to be in a competition in my town called Dancing with the Mankato Stars. Now, this competition is very similar to what you might see on TV, you know, the Dancing with the Stars. Ten pros are paired up with ten people in our community to raise money for the American Red Cross. Asked to be in this competition, and I knew I should say yes. I knew that it would be really good for my community. I knew it would be really good for me to get out of my comfort zone.
Starting point is 00:01:34 But I was petrified. In fact, the first meeting that I had with my pro, Wade, he told me that we were going to be dancing dubstep, which is a type of hip hop. And so I went and I googled dubstep. And to be honest, that made it worse. I saw all these incredible pros dancing dubstep. But I said yes, because I knew that it was important for me to do so. And the first couple of weeks of learning hip-hop and dubstep were miserable for me. I remember specifically getting to practice and looking and comparing myself to Wade. And I would say things like, you know, gosh, I'm just not as good as him.
Starting point is 00:02:20 Or I'd look at myself in the mirror and I would say, man, I'm not a dancer. Or I remember one time when I drove home from practice, vividly imagined myself freezing on stage, freezing in front of 3,000 people. I knew at that moment that I needed to change my mindset. And that's what I did. I started using the high performance mindset. I recognized the ways that I was getting in my way and I worked to change it around
Starting point is 00:02:52 using the tools and strategies we'll be talking about on this podcast. And my next three weeks of dancing was so much better. I learned actually how to do dubstep and hip hop. And on the competition day, it was incredible. One of the best experiences I've had in my whole entire life. We got a 29 out of 30 at the competition. And one of the judges, who was a Vikings cheerleader, actually said at the end that she loved to watch me dance. Now believe me, no one has ever told me that they love to watch me dance.
Starting point is 00:03:31 And this is a story where I was able to apply the high performance mindset. And as a high performance coach, this is what I help people do. Recognize when they're in their own way and then use tools and strategies to get out of their own way. So what do I actually mean by high performance? A life of high performance means that we are living our passion and purpose. We're going after what we want so we can reach our full potential. But we do this in a really balanced way in the pursuit of high performance. But living a life of high performance is really living on purpose and with purpose. Getting what you want out of your life and you constructing your life, not anyone else. So knowing what your short-term goals are and your long-term goals are
Starting point is 00:04:18 and working daily to reach really your full potential. So staying fully present and engaged in the pursuit of being at your best consistently. And I was reading a book recently called Positive Intelligence by Sherrod Chasman. And one of the things that he talks about is that only 20% of people on teams reach their full potential. Only 20%. And I think the reason is, is many people don't necessarily understand how to master their mindset and what to do when their mind is in their own way, when they're stuck, and when they're not moving forward. And so that's what this podcast is really all about, is to help you master your mindset so you can live a life on purpose, to go after what you want, and live a life of high performance. And so what I don't mean by high performance mindset is doing it in an imbalanced way,
Starting point is 00:05:17 where you're working 24-7, not necessarily caring about yourself or not caring about your family or your friends, And it's not about being perfect. But you must master your own psychology. You must master your mindset for a life of high performance. Because I think many times our life, our mind works against us, not for us. And the higher you move in your career, the higher you move in sport, the more important that mental factors will be. So you might be saying, gosh, well, I'm not an athlete. How does this apply to me? Anybody can achieve high performance. Yes, if you're an athlete or a coach, you can achieve high performance, but you could also do so as a teacher, as a business leader, or an entrepreneur.
Starting point is 00:06:08 Yes, you can achieve high performance. An athlete could use the high performance mindset to improve their game and to improve their motivation. An entrepreneur, like myself, could use and develop the high performance mindset because it can be scary and create some anxiety. It, be difficult for you to put yourself out there and put your content out there. As a parent, you can use the high performance mindset to be more present with your kids or your spouse or your significant other. If you are a dancer or a singer, you can use the high performance mindset to go after your dreams to perform on Broadway. So anybody can experience high performance in any part of their life. So what's actually necessary for high performance?
Starting point is 00:06:57 You know, I've dedicated my life to studying the high performance mindset and have worked with championship teams, Olympic and pro athletes, entrepreneurs, business leaders. I've published some of the top research and journals related to high performance mindset. And after studying it for over 15 years, I've come to understand that there are five commonalities between high performers. The first one is that they're highly self-confident. So high performers know what they're all about and they know who they truly are. They're more likely to speak up for themselves and they're courageous. They take action.
Starting point is 00:07:40 Number two, they have clear focus. They can be totally immersed in an activity and they're not distracted by the past or the future They have a present moment focus Number three, they have clear goals They have high standards and they stick to their future They know what they're going after and why they're going after it Number four, they feel in control so they're in control of their emotions their thoughts and their actions and they're physically and mentally relaxed when they go after what they want and then number five they
Starting point is 00:08:19 have a positive attitude so they're highly energized and passionate about what they're going after and who they are and their future and they are enjoying what they're doing. To have a positive attitude, your mind is working for you, not against you. So again, those five commonalities are number one, they're highly confident. Number two, they're focused. Number three, they have clear goals. Number four, and they're in control of their emotions, thoughts, and actions. And number five, they have a positive attitude. So what gets in our way of high performance?
Starting point is 00:08:58 Thinking too much or analysis by paralysis. Irrational thinking patterns. Our own anxiety or fear, blaming and not taking responsibility for ourselves, and taking things personally. And all of these characteristics can be enhanced by what's called psychological skills or mental skills. And that's what our focus of the podcast will be about, is helping you every Tuesday learn about a topic related to the high performance mindset. So I'll be exploring a topic related to high performance and then give you some strategies and tools so that you can live a life of high performance. And then every Thursday, I'm going to launch an interview with a high performer.
Starting point is 00:09:47 So somebody who works in high performance, who's a high performance coach, or a mental skills coach, or somebody who has achieved in high performance. How actually do you achieve the high performance mindset? If we go back to my story about dancing with the Mankato Stars, the first step is really for you to decide that this is something that you want for yourself. That you're ready to get out of your own way and live a life on purpose and
Starting point is 00:10:18 with purpose. You can really be within the 20% of people that reach your full potential. First step is to decide. And the second step is to take action. Perhaps there was something in this podcast today that stood out to you. That as you were listening, you said, yeah, I really need to work on my confidence. Or you know what? If I had clear goals and knew exactly what I was going after, that would make all the difference.
Starting point is 00:10:50 Or man, you know what? Maybe my attitude needs to improve a little so that I can really be more fully present, more fully engaged and constructing the life that I want. So the second step is to take action. I'd encourage you to decide, you know, what's that one thing that I talked about today that would make all the difference in your life, would be the difference that would make all the difference, and then commit to practicing that this week. So thank you so much for joining me today on the high performance mindset.
