Let's bring on Sindra.
It's High Performance Mindset with Dr. Sindra Kampoff in studio with us today. Good morning,
Sindra. Good morning. It's great to be here. Good to have you in. Good to see sunshine again.
Oh, it's beautiful. Man, a dreary weekend. It was getting us down here a little bit, to be honest.
So we were looking forward to Monday here where there's no rain and you're coming in to dish out the positivity today.
Always. The resident CRE, as we like to call it.
We're talking a little bit today about mindset and the one thing you need to know about mindset.
We call this segment here on the show High Performance Mindset.
It's also the name of your podcast. So why not dive into what that means a little bit
today and what is the one thing we need to know? Are we starting with a quote like usual? Of course,
yep. Okay. So you must learn a new way to think before you can learn a new way to be. Marianne
Williams. That's pretty good. That's basically saying you can want something, but you got to be
willing to make the change to have it happen, right? Absolutely.
Okay.
So there is a story for us here that I read through quick last night, actually,
and I've been sort of from a distance following this girl's story because it's very interesting.
And Gabe Grunewald, is that how you pronounce her last name?
Yep.
Okay.
So we're going to talk a little bit about her as just inspiration for today's segment.
And she's a professional runner from Minneapolis,
Minnesota. She's one of the world's best having won national the national championship in the 3000 and last year after she was at the Olympic trials so she's trying to get to the Rio Olympics
and just fell short she was diagnosed with cancer for the third time and as I'm talking about the
story I want you to listen to like how she's approaching this.
So she sent a tweet to her followers from her hospital bed as she is preparing to go into
surgery. And they were going to remove a five to six inch cancerous tumor from her liver.
And this is what she said. She said, my pre-op mantra is this, anything painful or uncomfortable
happening during this hospital visit is not being done to me, but it's been being done for me, for my benefit. She said the only way out is through. Nice. So, you know,
right before she's going into surgery, she's really taking a gratitude or a grateful perspective
where she's looking at like everything that's happening to me today is actually for my benefit.
So despite setbacks, Gabe always stays positive and grateful. And recently I asked her
why, like why she's actually trying to run in the pro circuit. She's doing that while she's
battling cancer. And she said, you know, I want to show others that even in the face of adversity
or uncertainty, living a fulfilling life is still possible. And I want to make the time that I have
mean something. So today we're talking about not just like listening and learning,
but really applying it and teaching. And I think that she's a great example of somebody who not
only applies this to her life, but also like teaches others through her social media or
through living as an example or role model. A lot of ways we can come in at this one,
different angles, but high performance mindset is the topic. What do you mean exactly by high performance mindset? This is a good example of it, right?
It is a good example. So what I really mean is using your mind to reach your potential. And
even when the worst things are happening around you, what do you do? You know, you suffer a deeper,
you know, gut-wrenching loss or a force to change directions at work or at home. You know,
can you stay resilient and strong and in control?
And I think Gabe is a great example of doing that despite adversity or uncertainty that she's really seeing her problems as gifts. And that's really what I mean by the high performance mindset.
And it's one of those things I think people need to know that it's not like,
okay, I've mastered it. I'm good. I'm a Jedi now. That sort of thing.
Like it takes work, continual work.
It never ends, right?
It's a constant process of staying there.
It's a constant practice that's really deliberate.
So it's like being intentional with what you're thinking about.
And then that impacts what you do.
And then what do you mean by performance?
Because obviously here in this context, we're talking about an athlete, an elite athlete.
But really, every single one of us is a performer every day.
Exactly.
So, you know, I perform in different roles.
I'm a professor, a leader, a writer, a coach, a friend, a wife, a mom, an athlete, right?
But you perform in different ways, but often challenging roles too.
So your mind is essential to your success.
And when you live what I describe as like a high-performance life,
you're fully engaged and present and in control and confident.
So what do you see as some of the benefits to living that high-performance life you just mentioned?
I think you become mentally stronger and you can grab a hold of your goals and go after them no matter what's facing you.
And you can see these problems that we all have as puzzles to solve and as gifts.
I think with the high-performance mindset and really adapting this, nothing is too hard or impossible. I like it. It's all very useful stuff here. So
there are 10 powerful practices you say that people can do to kind of follow this high
performance model. What are they? And each Monday morning, we talk about something related to this.
And you can actually go on my website and you can find the PDF. You can download it.
But here's just a few. They're gritty. They know their purpose. They master their thinking.
They know themselves so they can master themselves. They dominate the controllables. So that means
just like the things that they can control. They choose to feel good. They choose to feel
empowering emotions and they own who they are. They own the moment and they live and let go. And then they get comfortable being uncomfortable.
So they choose things that are outside their comfort zone. This is, I know that you've talked
a lot about the website and your podcasts and stuff before. So you can go and you can get like
this list and there's the 10 traits of high performers, right? Yes, exactly. And that's actually the structure of my book.
Yes.
Very cool.
Which is going to print, so it is close.
They're very close.
So we're going to go over a few of these today, right, Lisa?
Yeah, yeah.
The ways that you can adopt a high performance mindset.
You said there are three ways.
There are three ways.
And the first level is to listen and learn.
So listen to what we share in the mornings.
And that's great because you can learn about the tools and learn. So listen to what we, you know, what we share in the mornings. And you know, those,
that's, that's great, because you can like learn about the tools to help you improve your life and
your performance. But this has the lowest level of impact just by just by listening and just,
just hearing it. That's the lowest level of impact. So we don't, you know, we want to go
beyond that. What's the second way? Apply and do. So that would be to take the tools and strategies
we talk about and implement them applying to your life, not only just listen and learn, but apply and do.
So actually applying to your life.
Okay. And the third way?
So this is the way I think that Gabe really adopts this, where she lives and teaches.
So she not only lives the high performance principles or these principles that we talk about to help master your mindset, which that leads to her consistent performance, happiness, her motivation, her grit, right?
And when you do this,
that's the one thing that you need to know about mindset
is like it is continual, it is deliberate,
but that's how you become a master
is if you really live and teach it.
And I think both of you do a good job of this
where you apply it to your life
and then you teach others.
So you teach your kids
or you teach the athletes that you coach
or the other people that you coach or other people
that you interact with every day.
You try to anyway. Like I said, it's never perfect
either. Sometimes you catch yourself and you're like,
Oh, I'm doing this. What would
Syndra do? WWCD.
I better backtrack a little bit
here and I know what I'm supposed to do.
But like I said, a continuous
learning process and
you never really master it.
You just become better at controlling it and catching it.
I know you've talked about catching it and identifying all that stuff.
Absolutely.
All very good stuff.
You just have to really be kind of conscious of it until it becomes automatic for you.
So how do you summarize today's high-performance topic?
So high performers, those people who are working to reach their potential, which I know is you or you wouldn't be listening.
They live and teach.
They see their problems as gifts, as puzzles to solve.
And they channel their inner Gabe to be thankful for their experiences and their difficulties.
I like the story with Gabe because it's one of those stories that, you know, if you have dreams, you have aspirations.
And they're right there in front of you.
Get up and go after them now because you don't know if you're going to get a chance later on why wait why wait for
what you want get up and go get it and the article i sent you last night really talked about how she
decided to delay her chemo yeah i mean you know of course like with okay from her doctor correct
but so she could race a few more times this season just to see what she can do you know like she said
if this ends up being my last race you know i want to be able to do it while I'm feeling like I can do it. So that'll
be great to kind of watch and see how she goes and then wish her the best of luck when she goes
into treatment. Affirmation for today as we wrap up? I work to master my mindset. Nothing is too
hard or impossible for me. And that comes up, of course, on social media. If you follow Cindra,
you can follow her on Twitter.
You can get to the website and get all the details.
