Each week we bring you strategies and interviews to help you ignite your mindset. Let's bring on Sindra. High Performance Mindset today with Dr. Sindra Kampoff. Good morning to you, Sindra. It's great to be here. Good to have you in. Here we go. It's go time. Go time. We're going to start with a quote.
Starting point is 00:00:51 All right. Turn your passion into purpose. I like just reading that. I like today's topic automatically. Go for it. Awesome. There is no passion to be found playing small and settling for a life that is less than the one you're capable of living by Nelson Mandela. Nice. All right. So what inspired you to come in today with this particular topic? Well, I spent two days last week speaking at the Mille Lacs Corporate Ventures Annual Leadership Conference. And their conference was full of keynote speakers. And so Mille Lacs Corporate Ventures, they operate two of the casinos in Minnesota. That's what I was wondering, if it was the casino Mille Lacs people. Yeah. And so it's actually in Hinkley, Minnesota, speaking at Grand Casino. And then
Starting point is 00:01:25 they operate other restaurants and hotels. And so I heard, well, I spoke both mornings, but I heard amazing speakers. So I heard Kat Perkins. She was on The Voice. She's from Minnesota. I heard Ian Leonard, the weather guy from Fox News. I heard lots of others. I heard one guy who was a closing keynote named Mark Lindquist. And so what I thought I would share with you today is my takeaways from this conference, just to help you learn something and to help you follow your passion and your purpose. All right. So turning your passion into your purpose, how do you describe that? So really your purpose is your why. It's kind of the reason for your journey, the reason why you're here. And your passion is what lights the fire.
Starting point is 00:02:05 So that's the fire kind of that lights the way. That's what gives you energy and fuel. And we actually both, we know both of those. Passion and purpose is part of grit. You know, sustaining your excitement for your goals over the long term despite setbacks. And we know grit's a strong predictor of success, perhaps maybe even the strongest predictor. So that's why it's important to think about what you're passionate about, why you do what you do, because it helps you stay gritty.
Starting point is 00:02:31 All right. Now, there's an interesting statistic that you picked up this past week and that you bring to us today. I'm really actually kind of sad by this statistic when you look at it. So I hope it grabs some people this morning and gets them thinking as well. What is that stat? So the closing keynote was Mark Lindquist, and he sings the national anthem all over the world, including he sang at the Vikings home opener in front of 17 million people. It was
Starting point is 00:02:55 live on TV. And so this is one of the stats that he shared with us. He said in a Gallup poll over a half million workers, only 11% said they love what they do. 11? 11. Out of a half a million people? 11%. And so, you know, you think about how it connects to today's topic is really less than 11% have this passion thing figured out. Less than 11% of people are on fire for what they do.
Starting point is 00:03:21 Doing what they really want to be doing. Mm-hmm. Interesting. So what do you suggest that we do then to find our passion? Maybe some of us kind of sit there and say, well, I would love to do this someday, but I just can't or I won't or I don't have the time or the ability. So how do we focus in on this?
Starting point is 00:03:37 Yeah, and I think one of the reasons for the 11% is because change is scary and people don't necessarily want to get out of their comfort zones, right? Sometimes we just forget why we do what we do or we forget really what we're passionate about or maybe we haven't spent time thinking about it. And so one of the things that Mark suggested we do is – so his keynote was about eight steps to ignite your passion. And I'm going to share with you a few. So he said, first, you got to try a bunch of stuff.
Starting point is 00:04:02 That's what he said. Right. Like, try a bunch of stuff. Try stuff that you said. Right. Like, try a bunch of stuff. Try stuff that you haven't tried before. Because how do you know if you're passionate about it if you haven't tried it? And that helps you get out of your comfort zone and try new things. And then he said, you know, after you try a bunch of stuff, then ask yourself, are you passionate about it? And then, you know, don't stop until you find your passion.
Starting point is 00:04:21 Seems like easy instructions, right? Yeah. I think there's a lot of people that might say, well, I'm passionate about, let's just say it's fishing. You've got to go to work every day and pump numbers into a computer, but you really like to fish and you'd love to be a fishing guide. But then they think, okay, well, there's a lot of risk that comes with that and there's a lot of people that rely on me and my paycheck every day, maybe kids, wife, other family members, whatever.
Starting point is 00:04:41 Absolutely. So finding that and getting after it and making it your passion and your purpose. And turning it into your purpose. I don't think that the passion into purpose always has to be exactly what you do for a living. But I think the key is finding that passion and turning it into purpose. You don't have both of them, right? Like you don't stay fueled. You don't know where you're going. And we've talked a lot about just the importance of having a purpose. You know, one of the other things that Mark suggested that we do and actually had us do it is he had us write our bucket list. So the things that we wanted to do.
Starting point is 00:05:10 And he gave us a couple minutes to do that, two minutes. And, you know, within that bucket list was things that we are passionate about. So he had us look at that list and think about, you know, what are we passionate about on this list? And then he said, you know, somebody around the world is going to do all the things on your list. And so why not make it you? Sure. Okay, I get it. All right. So you also heard Ian Leonard. So what did he have to say about passion and purpose? So Ian is highly involved in Special Olympics, I think rates over a million dollars for Special Olympics. So that's not his job, but it's one of his passions. And he also just for over the last year was diagnosed with skin cancer. And so he went through 42 days of chemo.
Starting point is 00:05:47 So he got really clear on his passion and his purpose. And he suggested to think about how to turn your passion into your purpose is to ask yourself three questions. So he said, what am I good at? Okay, what do I love? And what does the world need? So what am I good at? What do I love? And what does the world need. So what am I good at? What do I love? And what does the world need? And I especially
Starting point is 00:06:05 like the world need part because, you know, really service is key to kind of making your purpose come alive. Because when you're really serving others, then it makes it even stronger. And then somebody shared the JFK quote that said, you know, it's not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country. Okay. And that was cool. It's like, you know, just the idea of just giving back. So he suggested to think about what am I good at, what do I love, and what does the world need? Okay. So what's the best way that we can find our own passion?
Starting point is 00:06:37 I think the key is today is if you have a few minutes, is write down the list of things that you're passionate about and just answer the prompt, I am passionate about blank. And I think the key is to realize no one else has the same passions as you. No one else has the same purpose as you. No one else can do the same things that you can. And so, you know, you have a unique purpose and unique passions that I think are key to kind of following and helping you stay fueled and excited along the way.
Starting point is 00:07:03 And what do we do after that? I think the key is, you know, we've been talking about passion and purpose today. So and even if you know what your passions and your purpose is, we have to remind ourselves what those are and to really grow them. And I think sometimes we can get so busy that we forget what we're passionate about. We can forget what our purpose is. And so, you know, what's something you can do every day to continue to grow that passion and purpose? Because whatever you focus on grows. So is there something you can do in the morning, maybe on your drive to work to remind yourself, you know, what is it
Starting point is 00:07:33 that you're passionate about at work or on your way home when you're, you know, ready to go with your family? What are you passionate about related to your family? So the key is, is to continue to grow that passion. And, you know and you live in a more fueled way. And obviously that leads to success, which we've been talking about. This is a great Monday morning topic for those that are dragging butts out of bed today and really kind of struggling with it. So to really put everything into a nice, neat little package today, how do you summarize this topic? So high performers, those people who are working to reach their greater potential,
Starting point is 00:08:03 they find and follow their passion. And they turn their passion into their purpose because their purpose is what makes them uniquely them. They grow their passion and they keep trying to find new things, try new things to find it, so they can be one of the 11% of people in the world doing what they love. Nice. And an affirmation for this week? There's always one that goes along with the topic. I find and live my passion. I remind myself every day what I'm passionate about.
