I've chosen to talk about this topic today because of my work with high-performing athletes right now.
What I've come to find is that all of us struggle with remembering to acknowledge
our past successes. So what do I mean by acknowledging your past successes? Most
people remember their failures more than their successes. I think there's several
reasons for this. We're more likely to be punished for the mistakes that we make
in sport and growing up,
and we tend to remember those experiences with intense emotion.
So we tend to play those failures in our mind instead of our successes.
The problem is we are programming our mind for failure if we think about it more often.
It's important to acknowledge our past successes
because research has shown that the more you acknowledge your past successes, the more confident you'll become.
We know that confidence is one of the highest predictors of your performance every day.
And even if you fail, if you're confident, failure is not going to destroy you because your confidence is high. And the more confidence you have, the more likely you're going to be able to go after your goals and your dreams
and take risks on going after those goals and your dreams.
Especially if you feel stuck right now or in a rut or maybe a slump,
reminding yourself of your past successes is essential.
Now there's two ways today that we're going to talk about
how to remind yourself of your past successes. Now we have two ways today that we're going to talk about how to remind yourself of your
past successes.
We have successes all day long, but we don't recognize them.
We tend to set the bar way too high.
We don't even call it a success.
The first strategy is to give a written record of your successes.
It can be as simple as taking out a notebook or maybe a document on your computer.
I tend to call this a success journal when I'm working with high performers.
Each day, fill out one thing that was successful that day. Now, it could be something really small or it could be something big.
You could write down maybe that you made it to the gym this morning.
You successfully closed a deal at work.
Avoided the temptation
last night to stay up too late, or perhaps you had an outstanding game this weekend.
Every day, write one thing in your journal.
One thing that was successful, either big or small.
Your confidence will grow, and you'll more likely be able to remember those successes
when the going gets tough.
The second strategy that we're going to talk about today is if you're getting ready to do something specific.
Let's say play a game this weekend or give a presentation at work or run a marathon.
Write down your five best moments of doing so.
If you're a quarterback, you should have your five top plays written down. If you're ready to give a speech at work, you definitely should have five times that you've communicated your best written down.
If you're ready to go to an interview and you really want to crush it, write down five times that you successfully communicated what you do.
The key is to replay those experiences in your mind.
Keep that list somewhere you can see it. Research has found that
if you see it in your physical environment, it's going to impact your mood, your attitude, and your
behavior. When I'm working with high-performing athletes, I tell them to remind themselves of
their successes every single day. Perhaps as they go to bed at night, they recall the five times
they've been most successful. Or maybe it's on their way to practice as they're walking to practice. It's essential that we program our
mind for success, not failure. Your mind doesn't automatically do this, so it's really important
that you work to remind yourself of your past successes. Because to create more success, my
friends, you need to acknowledge your success.
Your brain does not naturally do this.
You must program it to remember your successes. And when you do that, you're programming your subconscious to remember your desire to be successful.
And it's more likely to happen.
As Brian Tracy said, you are a living magnet.
What you attract into your life is in harmony with your dominant thought.
My friends, keep your thoughts focused on your successes.
Have an outstanding week and be mentally strong.
