It's a brand new year and we have Dr. Sindra Kampoff in with us for High Performance Mindset on The Country Club. Good morning, Sindra. Good morning. It's great to be here. Happy
New Year. Happy New Year. Happy Anniversary. I know. Isn't this awesome?
Has it really been six years that we've been doing this?
I think so.
On the radio?
My Facebook told me.
And it must be true.
From the first time.
Good for something.
That's incredible.
It doesn't seem...
Time goes really fast, doesn't it?
Yeah.
All kind of born out of...
I know it was the Mankato Marathon, and you were speaking at the Speaker Series, and I
was introducing you, and I thought, oh my gosh, I've seen this lady's name a billion times in my Runner's World magazines.
Like, she's right here in this town.
And then the conversation was had between you and Lisa about how you were opening the Center for Sport and Performance Psychology.
And then we met on, like, January 1st, I think, had lunch, cooked up this idea.
And here we are all these years later, Still doing this, still passing along the useful information
There's a book and a podcast
And all that for you
Things are going pretty well
It's pretty fun to look back at that, right?
And think about where it started and why it started
It was just to help people and spread a positive message
And you brought champagne
And I brought champagne too
That's always good to bring alcohol to the country club and you're you're always welcome back year after year so that's good
stuff so that's pretty cool and we're excited about that and uh we have a topic for today that
is perfect because i actually mentioned this a little bit ago i said we haven't seen cinderella
in a couple of weeks we maybe have made some resolutions that have already gone in the tank
we can maybe reframe refocus and get get back on the resolution or the goal train.
So preparing for 2019 with a bang is the topic today.
Yeah, there we go.
And we'll start with a quote.
So this is C.S. Lewis.
He said, you're never too old to set another goal or dream a new dream.
I have at my house, my wife and kids bought me, it was a little stand and it's got like
a wooden cover and back and there's a couple little rings.
It's almost like a binder, right?
But it's for bib numbers for racing.
Oh, cool.
And you can put them in there and then close it.
And the cover of that, and then you put it on the stand and you have them all right there.
The cover of it has that quote on it.
Oh, nice.
Oh, wow.
Which is cool because I'm just an old guy out for a slow run, right?
But I can put my bib numbers in there. That's in there and look at my accomplishments, so to speak. So I saw that quote.
I thought, that's a good one. I see that every single day at my house. Excellent. And you have
an example for us to start out. Sure. So, you know, a few years ago, I was speaking to a fifth
grade classroom and the teacher had read an article that I wrote in the Free Press. And so
she asked me to come in and talk about it. And
towards the end of my talk with
the kids, she asked me, she said,
Sindra, what's your favorite quote?
And I knew it right away. And it was a
Donna Williams quote. And it goes like this.
If your dreams don't scare you, they aren't big enough.
Yes, we've heard that before.
Yeah, we have talked about it before. And I remember
vividly, like the fifth graders
didn't think anything, you know, different about this And I remember vividly like the fifth graders didn't think anything different about this
school.
They're just like, OK.
But the teacher, I really shocked her.
And she kind of sat back in her chair and was really surprised.
And afterwards, I was talking to her and she said, you know, Cinder, I think the reason
I was surprised is because I really forgot to keep dreaming.
And I've been doing this job for 20, 25 years, and I don't really have
anything that I'm trying to reach for. I don't have any goals that I'm going after. And it made
me step back and really think about how we can kind of get in these ruts where maybe we're just
going through our day-to-day, our year-to-year. Go through the motions. Go through the motions,
yeah, without really thinking about what is it that we want, because we all need something to get us excited.
And sometimes we let maybe age, right, or experience.
We don't have enough experience or sometimes responsibilities kind of get in our way of diminishing our dreams and not keeping us excited about something.
All right.
So it seems like kind of a silly question, but why is this topic important?
Well, so today we're talking about starting the year with a bang. And the key is, is to have a
clear focus. And when you back that with a plan, you're going to feel more confident and have more
personal power in the new year. And there's a lot of other benefits of goals. It increases your
confidence, helps you remain persistent in adversity. And really, bottom line, it helps you reach your potential.
So we're going to talk about questions you can ask yourself to start the new year.
All right.
What's the first question to consider?
So the first question to consider is really about 2018.
And so I have two questions about 2018.
And the first one is, what were your wins or your successes in 2018?
And what did you learn from them?
And this is important because it'll help you build momentum for the new year.
It also builds your confidence when you think about what did you do in 2018 that was great?
That really helps you consider your strengths.
And I did this.
I was having a conversation with a friend and we were talking about some of these questions.
And it made me realize that there were some things I forgot happened in 2018.
And then, oh, wow, yeah, that did happen.
And that was a really cool experience.
It shows me that I can do something similar this year.
All right.
So what's the next question we should ask?
And is it also about 2018?
Yes.
So here's the second question.
What were your disappointments, and what did you learn from them?
And this is an important question because you consider the lessons that you learned.
Also, kind of what do you want to change?
What didn't work and why did it not work?
So you can really help you think about maybe that's a disappointment is related to a new goal that you want to set for this coming year.
And again, I did something similar.
And the thing that I was most disappointed about
with myself was, gosh, I need to get running more. And so I set a goal to run every day this year,
even if it's just one mile. And then if I don't do it one day, I'm just going to start over.
All right. I know a couple of different people that do the streak where it's a minimum of one
mile every day and they're on tremendously long streaks, which is super impressive.
Yes.
So good luck to you.
Thank you.
That's cool.
Now let's move on to the new year.
What's the first question we should ask in 2019?
So what are your goals that you want to seek in 2019,
and why do they excite you?
Okay, so I'm going to say that again.
What are your goals that you seek in 2019,
and why do they excite you?
And the last part is really important
because it should be
something that moves you, something that you're passionate about or that you want.
And three or four goals for the year is about the right amount if you have too much to focus on.
And you want to write those goals in a way that is really about what you want, not what you don't
want. So if you wrote a goal that you want to eliminate sweets
or you want to avoid sweets,
instead you want to write it in a way that
helps you think about what you do want to do.
Keep you motivated and focused on what you want,
not what you don't want.
So what follow-up goal do we ask after we set our goals?
Okay, so the next question you'd ask yourself is,
why is that goal important to you?
And write the why beside it.
So for example, and by the way,
these questions I'd encourage you to either write down
or talk with a friend about.
And so when you're writing your goal down,
write next to it why you want it.
And we know when you look deep inside of you,
you're more likely to find the change that you want to make in the new year when you think about why do you want it.
And the why really helps you think about, you know, what's important to you, what's going to motivate you to really want the change and not feel like you have to make the change.
Right.
Something that you really want.
So, for example, if you want to exercise more, why do you want to exercise more?
Is it because you have more energy?
Oh, okay.
You know, or what's the benefits there?
Okay.
So what's the next question to ask ourselves?
So the next question is, what is your plan?
Okay, so now you have your goals written down.
What's your plan?
And if you don't have a plan, it is just kind of like a dream.
Okay.
It doesn't really help you think about, you know, how you're going to do it. So before you go into the action phase with your goals, consider kind of more in the preparation phase,
how are you going to go after that goal?
What's your plan?
So sit down, think about your plan.
How are you going to make it happen?
And what might get in your way?
And how can you adjust those goals if you have any barriers?
So I think the key is to treat your goal kind of like a well
thought out business plan. It really is like a business plan for your life, right? Yeah,
you know, absolutely. So what's the last question that we need to ask ourselves?
So the last question is, who's going to be on your team for 2019? So who will be on maybe you
call it your positivity tribe, right? Who's going to be the people to really push you and hold you accountable?
And who will you share your goals with to really help you, support you and be a good source of support?
Any final tips for us there?
Sure. Yeah, I'd say final tip would be, I mean, I said talk about it with a friend or write these things down.
I think it's really important to write it down after you talk with a friend about it.
It kind of solidifies it right there. Absolutely.
See it in writing.
And then you're more likely to hold yourself accountable
and your goals and your plans
won't be forgotten. And so put them
somewhere you can see them, like an refrigerator
or on your plan or something
like that. Cool. I like the tribe
thing, the positivity tribe. The whole thing,
the whole, you know, surrounding yourself with people
that are going to encourage you or promote that goal that you're trying to achieve. Absolutely.
I think about like, oh, you lost how much weight? That's great. Oh, yeah, I probably gained it all
back at the holidays. You know, you don't want to be around the people that would say something
like that. You want the people that are going to be doing that same thing or maybe going for
the similar goals or have done that and can encourage you along the way. Absolutely. Good topic to start the new year with.
How do we summarize today's topic?
So high performers, those people who are working to reach their greater potential,
they spend time thinking about what they want at the beginning of the year,
and they reflect back on the year to think about their wins or their challenges.
Then they write their goals down.
We talked about three or four goals today.
And they consider why they want that goal. And then they put out a plan and write their goals down. We talked about three or four goals today. And they consider why they want that goal.
And then they put out a plan and write out a plan.
And then the final thing is they would consider who's on their team,
because we all need a team of positivity and support and accountability.
Awesome.
What's a power phrase for this week?
