Welcome to High Performance Mindset with Dr. Sindra Kampoff.
Do you want to reach your full potential, live a life of passion, go after your dreams?
Each week we bring you strategies and interviews to help you ignite your mindset.
Let's bring on Syndra.
What's kind of weird is when Syndra's here on Patriots Day.
I know. I was kind of sad about that
this morning. Are you tracking anybody
who's from the area that's going to be out there today?
Yes. Some of my friends are running.
Kathy Brennan. Yeah, I know. area that's going to be out there today? Yes, some of my friends are running. So, Kathy Brennan.
Yeah, I know she was so excited to be there.
I've been watching her on social media.
Yeah, I know.
And Hennings, Josh and Brittany Henning, those are people I'm going to be watching today at the Boston Marathon.
I haven't paid any attention as to what the weather's going to be like out there today.
Have you looked?
Is it going to be nice?
I looked a couple of days ago and it said windy.
So, I'm like, ah.
That's typical.
Yeah, I was like, you know, you can handle anything.
That's what I texted them today.
Yeah, as long as it's not too cold, I think, or too hot.
I mean, those are obviously the two extremes.
Last year it was cold and wet.
Yeah, a headwind wouldn't be the world's greatest,
but it also wouldn't be the worst thing that you could possibly have out there
while running the Boston Marathon. So best of luck to everybody out there today. Look forward
to seeing all those results and hearing about everybody's finish after the fact. So today's
topic, Cindra, three ways to find the positive. Where are we going with this? We start with a
quote. This is a quote by Jonathan Ziert. He said, don't focus on the difficulty, focus on what can
come from the difficulty. Wow. Okay, so our example today involves Jonathan.
It does.
So president of Greater Mankato Growth passed away a few weeks ago after a five-year battle of prostate cancer.
And I had him on my podcast, episode 58.
So it was a while ago.
We're right in the middle of his cancer journey.
And I re-listened to it this weekend.
And it was powerful. So I wanted to
share with the listeners what I learned from Jonathan as a tribute to him today.
And it might be good for people who are looking for a good podcast to go find that one. And she
just told you it's episode 58 of the couple hundred of them that are available to you there
with Sindra. So three ways to find the positive. Where are we going with this today in regards to
Jonathan? So we're really talking about finding the opportunity and the positive.
And one thing that Jonathan said to me, he said, like, cancer is a tremendous blessing.
And he talked about how it was the most blessed period of his life. And as I listened to that,
I just couldn't quite believe it. You know, but he said that he had a stronger purpose in his life,
that actually cancer changed him to be more patient, have deeper relationships, just more compassionate overall.
And when I asked him, I was like, well, Jonathan, was that immediate?
You know, he said, well, there was initial shock.
But right away, he had that perspective that it was a blessing.
He's always blown me away as the kind of person that can be like that,
where if it were me, I would struggle with it, I think, quite a bit more than he did, or at least I wouldn't be able to put on that happy face like
he did. So did you ask him about that? Like, how? Yeah, and that's when he said, like, don't focus
on the difficulty, focus on what can come from the difficulty. And then I said, well, how?
And this is what he said. He said, focus on what inspires you and grab a hold of that instead of
focusing on the pain and let what inspires you move you.
And he was giving examples like, you know, if the nature inspires you or reading a book inspires you or playing the guitar inspires you, like let that move you.
And I think that's why he thrived for this very reason, because his purpose just became deeper. You know, he said that I can help people in the world with cancer.
And he felt that he built a stage in the town to help talk about it and then fight it publicly.
Right. He absolutely did. Now, what does the research say about your mindset and like dealing
with these life-threatening illnesses that come up?
So I went to the source, the American Cancer Society, and they talked about how
there's quite a bit of research that
treatment that deals with emotions and relationships can actually help people with
cancer feel more upbeat and have a better quality of life and how it's impossible to have a good
attitude all the time. But I think that what Jonathan inspired me to do was help me think
about whatever difficulty I'm experiencing, I can handle. Right. What else did you learn from him?
I learned from him the sense of urgency. So we talked about how like no one is guaranteed
tomorrow. For me, I was really inspired to think about that, that so easily we can just kind of
take a backseat to our lives. And he just said that he had just this urgency to make a difference.
And he was talking about like getting engaged. Don't sit in the bleacher seats, but you know, keep going. All right. So do you have a final point for us?
I do. I think the final point for me was, you know, that we can focus on the opportunity to
no matter what we're experiencing. And I think he was an amazing role model.
So summarize this for us today. The topic is three ways to find the positive.
All right. So here's the three ways. High performers focus on what can come from the
difficulty, number one.
Number two, they look for what inspires them, let that move them.
And then three, they live with urgency, knowing and focusing on how they can make a difference today.
Good stuff.
And our power phrase for today?
I don't focus on the difficulty.
I focus on what can come from the difficulty.
Excellent.
And, of course, Jonathan's podcast and many, many other great podcasts are available.
How do we get those if we want to go listen?
So you can listen on iHeartRadio, Stitcher Radio,
and iTunes and just search High Performance Mindset
and his is episode 58.
You can also go to my website, drcindra.com
and just search Jonathan's ear.
I think he was hoping
and I hope that he and his wife both know
and are comforted in the fact
that he will be making a difference
for a long, long time for a lot of people.
Absolutely.
And that's really cool.
And here it is already resurfacing
with three ways to find the positive.
