It is a Monday morning and time for High Performance Mindset with Dr. Sindra Kampoff.
Good morning, Sindra. Good morning. Thanks for having me. You betcha. Thanks for coming in. Good to have you here. Today we are talking about a topic that I find pretty interesting, and hopefully we have enough time to get through all of this.
What you think about yourself, you become. Let's start with that quote for the day.
This is by Robert Kawasaki. He said,
It's not what you say out of your mouth that determines your life. It's what you whisper to yourself that has the most power.
I like it. All right, so let's start with an example as always.
Last week, I had a busy week, marathon of a week. I was speaking every day and I spoke in Tee, South Dakota, really up and coming school district. And one of the exercises I did there is
I had someone stand up and tell us about their great day that they had teaching and then a tough
day they had teaching. And one thing that you notice is the strength of their arm when I
pressed it down was a lot like weaker when they were telling us about their bad day. And you know,
it was a lot stronger when they were telling us about their great day. So they're telling you
about their days and you're pressing down on their arms? Exactly. Okay. Yeah. So I can kind of test
what happens to their body when they're thinking really powerful thoughts about themselves and about their impact
versus like negative thoughts. And there was a visible difference when you pressed it down when
it was more negative. So they thought they were stronger. They were stronger when they were
thinking more powerful things about themselves and their impact and who they were. Yes. Okay.
So this is something that is addressed in the book, correct? What are we talking about
out of that today? Today, we're talking about the power of your self-talk and it's in practice three
and beyond grit. And the power of this is that you're always listening to yourself. So you have
to be careful with what you put in your mind. And today we're talking about how I am statements like
I am confident, I am strong are the best, most powerful ways to talk to yourself
because what you think about yourself helps you shape your destiny. And I am always allows you
to kind of think about your strengths, like who you are, but also what you want to become and
the qualities that you want to be, you know, you want to have. Okay. So, and when it comes to self
image, it's important. Why do important. Why is it important for us to
consider our self-image and maybe work at being a little more positive?
So I am statements are the strongest way to shape your self-image. And it's really the
mental picture you have of yourself, kind of the idea you have of yourself.
And it's based on how you feel and think about yourself in terms of your performance and your
relationships and even your appearance.
And it determines your level of happiness and fulfillment.
And so our self-image is based on, you know, what do we think about ourselves and our strengths
and our weaknesses?
Okay.
And maybe saying more positive things instead of negative things.
All right.
Question for you now.
Okay.
So I always tell myself, I mean, I know I consciously do this, like, oh, I'm always late. Yes. I'm always late. Yeah. I'm always running behind. Yes. So if I'm
supposed to change that into a positive statement, what happens if I don't believe it? Because I feel
like that might be difficult for me. So that's a really good point. So these I am statements
really help shape your self image. And I used to catch myself a couple of years ago saying that I'm always late and I work to change it because, you know, if I'm thinking I'm always
late, I'm going to continue that. And these labels that we put on ourselves are really powerful. So
when we think like I am smart, you know, therefore we think that we can do something. We think I am
a loser. Therefore, we believe we can't or I am outgoing. You know,, therefore we're able to do something. And if we say,
oh, I'm shy, therefore you're
unable to do it. It's an excuse.
I was thinking, I'm terrible
at remembering names.
And so you won't remember the name.
So I just give up and don't try to remember names.
I need to find a way to
better remember people's
names. Absolutely. So then is it like a practice
where you keep doing it and keep doing it
And then soon you actually are doing it and you believe it
I think that's the first step
Because these I am statements are really kind of the foundation of your self-image
And these I am statements help shape your healthy great self-image or unhealthy self-image
Okay, so let's talk about healthy or unhealthy self-image
Because it kind of changes how we focus on ourselves.
Absolutely.
Well, healthy really is where you make up your own mind
in terms of what are the mental pictures
you want to have about yourself.
And when you have a healthy self-image,
you're more optimistic, more confident,
you have a greater sense of control.
But when you're unhealthy,
you're really focused on these limitations
and what you're not and the flaws.
So we want to make sure we're putting powerful things in our mind about ourselves because what we think about ourselves, we become.
What is your final message for us?
Okay, my final message is this week, I'd encourage you to think about what are the I am statements that you're thinking about?
And what are you putting in your mind?
And maybe those are healthy.
Those are great.
Those are based on your strengths.
And also, I'd encourage you to think about
what do you ideally like to be?
And what are some of the I am statements
that you want to start thinking about
and focusing on so you become more of that?
All right.
So in two or three short sentences,
let's summarize this topic for today.
High performers,
they know what they think about themselves they become.
And they talk powerfully
to themselves
because their thoughts
have power
and they tell themselves
who they are
and also who they
ideally like to be
so they can really
nurture this powerful self-image.
I'm thinking of a wide receiver
who plays pro football
and formerly played
for my favorite
college football team
and didn't have a lot of believers.
And he was really one of the only that, I mean, a small group of people that really
believed in him.
And now he's one of the best in the game.
32 ranked 32nd.
I know this.
It's crazy.
So what is our power phrase for this week?
I think I am to help me reach my best.
And because what I think about myself,
I become. Awesome. Dr. Sindra Kampoff with us today. If we would like to get in touch with you,
