High Performance Mindset | Learn from World-Class Leaders, Consultants, Athletes & Coaches about Mindset - 280: I CAN...

Episode Date: October 3, 2019

High performers are intentional with their self-talk. They think “I can…” to reach their potential. They are honest with themselves and when they think “I can’t…”, they ask themselves if... they are willing to do the work to change it to “I can….”. This is important because when we are think “I can’t…” we really mean “I won’t.”   Power Phrase this Week: “I believe that I can! I change my can’t into cans to help me reach my big plans.”

Good morning. Great to be here. Good to have you in. We've been teasing a little bit. Today's topic, I can. And we stop at can right there because I know that oftentimes for people it's more than that. And we kind of want to shy away from that. So let's start with
Starting point is 00:00:50 the quote today. This is a quote by Robert Kawasaki. He said, it's not what you say out of your mouth that determines your life. It's what you whisper to yourself that has the most power. Nice. Nice. All right. So let's start with an example today. So this week I spent some time with the executive leadership group of Consolidated Communication. And part of the things we talked about was our powerful self-talk and really how it can be a game changer. It can help us get to where we want to go faster, help us reach our goals and plans. And we talked about the most powerful way to talk to yourself is I will, I can, I am. These are powerful because it's about
Starting point is 00:01:25 your intention and your potential and who you are. And today I thought we could talk about specifically about I can. All right. And that's a form of self-talk for a lot of people. If you can just kind of retrain the brain to say I can instead of I can't. Why is that important that we consider that? Well, we talk to ourselves about 50,000 to 80,000 times throughout our day. So, you know, we're always talking to ourselves. And I think the key is that we're always listening as well. So we know that, you know, high performers are really aware of their self-talk. And they know their self-talk determines who they are, what they do, who they become.
Starting point is 00:01:59 And it really is everything. And so high performers really talk to themselves powerfully because they know their thoughts have power. I know that this is one of the practices in your book, but for those that don't have the book and are going to purchase it after we talk about this, why is the I can statement so powerful? Well, it's really a statement about your potential. And it's a positive statement about your ability to grow and learn and accomplish your goals
Starting point is 00:02:23 and your dreams. And when you think like I can, you're focusing on the belief that you have the ability to do something. So, you know, I can have a great day. I can stop smoking. I can eat healthier. I can do great on my test today. That's for my son, Carter. I can throw the ball great, right? I can do that, whatever that is for you. All right. So, and then the I can't, which I mentioned already and maybe shouldn't have, but you say that we should avoid I can't. What do you mean by that? Because there might be times where we're just automatically prone
Starting point is 00:02:56 to saying I can't. Yes. Yeah, we are sometimes. And I think I can't really limits your potential. I think, think about how often people say some kind of version of the following, like, I can't really limits your potential. I think think about how often people say some kind of version of the following, like, I can't do that. You know, I can't get up and work out every morning or I can't, you know, take that job. It's so far away or I can't ask for help or I can't ask for a promotion. You know, I can't take that class or learn something new. And so, you know, we hear people say it a lot. At least I do. And we say it to ourselves as well. What does that really mean, though? I mean, if somebody keeps saying, I can't, I can't, does it mean that they're not willing to? Does it mean that they're scared? I think the majority of times that we're saying, I can't, really means I won't.
Starting point is 00:03:36 Oh, yeah, like I won't get up and work out early. I won't, right. And I think that's powerful to know is because it's really that we don't really want to, and we're maybe not motivated to do it really that we don't really want to and we're maybe not motivated to do it or we won't make sacrifices to. And so I think it's really important that we're honest with ourselves, that we're just not willing to do the work when we're saying I can't. Well, what do we do instead then? I mean, how do you grow when you're like, okay, I will not, I'm just using this as I will not get up and go work out. Right. I think it's important
Starting point is 00:04:01 to be honest with yourself. And I read this book called Everything is Figureoutable. It's not a great title. That's pretty good. By Marie Forleo. And she suggests that we write down our can'ts, like what's really, you know, what are the excuses that we're really making? And then look at those, cross them off, and then rewrite them as I won't. And I think that's powerful because then we really realize that it's not really our ability. It's just that we're not willing to do it right now. And then, you know, then change the ones that you really want to commit to to I can. And then once you've decided to really make that commitment, I think that's really empowering when you really pay attention to, you know, the I can't really like you're just not willing to because everything's figureoutable,
Starting point is 00:04:41 like everything you can figure out, right? If You just got to spend some time working on it and sticking to it. I agree. And so what's your final message for us today? So final message is just pay attention this week to when you say I can't, either out loud or in your head, and then decide, is it really something that you want to do? If it is, change it to I can. And if you don't want to, just be honest with yourself and just remember that it's really that you won't. All right. Honest with yourself. Who wants to do that? I can. And if you don't want to, just be honest with yourself and just remember that it's really that you won't. All right. Honest with yourself? Who wants to do that?
Starting point is 00:05:08 I know. Who wants to stand there and look at themselves and be honest? Come on. Now, that's what we're all working towards. How do we summarize today? So I'd say high performers are intentional with their self-talk. They think I can to reach their best. They're honest with themselves and ask themselves if they want to change it to I can. And our power phrase for this week? I believe I can. I change my can'ts into cans to help me reach my big plans. All right.
Starting point is 00:05:34 That's pretty good. You're like a poet over there. I'm a poet over there once in a while.
