on The Country Club
with Dr. Sindra Kampoff.
Good morning, Sindra.
Good morning.
It's great to be here.
Good to be here, too,
with all the weekend stuff
that was going on.
I think all the
home team
Maverick Athletics I think on the weekend went 6- going on. I think all the home team Maverick athletics,
I think, on the weekend went 6-0-2 at home this weekend.
Well represented here on home turf this weekend
between all of the athletic events that were going on.
A record number of points scored in the Maverick football game
and a 74-17 win over the University of Mary.
Vikings get a big win.
Marathon weekend.
All of that leads us into our topic today.
Your potential has no limits.
What quote are we starting with today?
This is a quote by Elliot Kachobi.
He said, I don't know where the limits are, but I would like to go there.
And he did.
More or less, right?
I mean, I was thinking a lot about things we've talked about before where it's impossible, really, until it's not.
You know, until somebody does it, then the floodgates open and all of a sudden things happen.
So let's have an example today.
So the example is from Elliot Kipchobe.
He became the first person to run 26.2 miles the marathon under two hours, 159.40. And what I think is cool about this is 41 professional runners rotated,
paced him along the route.
And I was following him on Twitter, love his Twitter feed,
and he uses this hashtag, no human is limited.
Very cool.
That's pretty cool.
And a lot of people that aren't familiar with the running scene
are like, why is this not an official record?
It's because of those pacers that he had in there was able to draft off of them and keep
him going.
But still, remarkable achievement.
435 per mile.
Yeah.
What?
I said that there were criticizing.
There was criticism out there.
And I said, OK, wait, stop.
Put your shoes on.
Go outside.
Give it a try.
Give it a try.
Try to run one mile at that pace.
Four minutes.
And then shut up.
35 seconds.
That was my comment.
I was like, then just shut up because that is unbelievable.
He also owns the actual record, right?
Yes.
Which is like a 201.
So he's knocking on the door of doing it in an actual marathon where it would count.
So we're using that as an example.
Your potential has no limits.
Why is this one important today?
Because really it's our beliefs that shape our potential. And a belief is kind of like,
you can think of it as like a state of mind. It's what somebody thinks is true,
whether they have evidence for it or not. So one person can believe one thing where
somebody else could believe, you know, that a two hour marathon under that is impossible.
And our limiting beliefs are beliefs that really constrain us. They can be about other
people or about ourselves. And we have them without even realizing that we have them many times.
So what are some examples of limiting beliefs?
You might think, well, bad things are just going to keep continuing for me,
or I'm never going to get ahead, or I'm not smart enough, or I don't have the ability to do that.
I don't know the right people to be successful. So those are some examples of limiting beliefs.
Now, I saw you guys out this weekend with the sports psych team.
You had a big group of sports psychologists that were riding along, just cheering people on, helping them.
Yeah.
And you've got an example from the weekend.
I do.
So we called ourselves Psychs on Bikes.
I love it.
I love it.
About 25 of us.
And at the end, we were kind of comparing stories. And there's this story that one of our graduate students, Frida, was biking with a runner from about mile 18 to 25.
And they're having this conversation.
And she said that she really wanted to run or do a triathlon to challenge herself.
But she didn't see herself as a swimmer or a biker.
And Frida, the sports psych person, said, well, did you see yourself as a marathoner before running 28 marathons?
Wow.
And she was like, well, no, good point.
And then later on, they were talking and she said she really wanted to qualify for Boston.
But she had to do tempo runs and she thought, you know, that she was too lazy to do them.
And so then the sports psych graduate student said, well, I think it's funny that you call yourself lazy when you're running a marathon right now and when you've ran four this year. So they both laughed and having that conversation
while she's running, while she's running. Yeah. And I think that really reflects what we're
talking about today, because those examples just kind of showed some limiting beliefs that she had
at that moment. Right. And that's really what we're talking about is understanding our limiting
beliefs to reach our potential.
So what if you're not a runner
and you're sitting there thinking,
well, I'm never going to get a raise
or I'm never going to get the job I want
or I'm never going to be as organized as I want.
What do we do instead?
Those are also like limiting beliefs.
Absolutely, yeah.
So we really need to address our limiting beliefs
because that's what limit us.
And it's not our potential that is limited.
So when you address those,
you can really move your vision for your future to new heights.
And when you change them, you really change your experience and you ultimately change your future.
So that's why it's really important to examine them.
Important, but how do we do it?
So one example I'd have is to write down three empowering, unstoppable beliefs that you want to adopt.
And I have my three on my note card.
I have them on my bed. And so I read them to myself when I wake up in the morning because I want to condition myself
to believe this way. And so some examples of empowering beliefs that you could write down,
you could write down, you know, great things are coming my way. Good things always happen for me
or my hard work always pays off or success comes to me. And that's really what's going to help you reach your potential.
I like it.
That's good.
I'm going to do the post-it note thing.
We were just talking about I've been training for that half marathon and all of my exercise
has been in the form of running and I haven't really done any of the other things I need
to do to just be in overall decent health.
And so I didn't really gain any weight, but I didn't really lose any weight while training and burning up all those calories on those miles. And I need to get better about
being more into the strength training part of it too. So that's going to be on my post-it note.
My strength will improve.
And being in control of what I put into my face hole and not eating and drinking too much. So
things I need to be better at here now that I'm done and moving on to whatever is next.
How do you summarize today's topic?
So high performers, those people who are working to reach their potential,
they believe that their potential is unlimited.
They recognize these limiting beliefs, condition themselves to move forward with new empowering beliefs,
and they level up these beliefs so they change their future and their experiences.
And what's our power phrase today?
I choose empowering beliefs so I can reach my potential.
If I think it, I can do it.
Excellent.
Yes.
And you know what?
It's impossible until it's not, right?
Nice.
Somebody does it, and then the floodgates open.
Why not be the first?
Or have it be the first for you, whatever that is.
