Hey, stranger. Hey, what's going on? Great to spend the weekend with you. It was so much fun, obviously.
Starting point is 00:00:43 The ultimate goal didn't happen for fans and players and coaches and all of that in the community here, but it was a great game, really. It was such an amazing game. How exciting was the end of that game when it was just 48-40 and it was just
Starting point is 00:00:59 I thought I was going to have a heart attack. It was absolutely fantastic to see how many Maverick fans were in Texas for that football game. All of the students and parents and the band and the cheer and dance teams and just fans and alumni came out of the woodwork from all over the country and showed up in Texas. We drove 13 hours. Yeah, we drove. So many people came out. I'm exhausted.
Starting point is 00:01:22 I caught a cold somehow, I think. I don't know what's going on, but it was a really good time. And as I've said it several times already, a great season. Super proud of that program this year and the things that they've done, and that's cool. We're going to talk a little bit about that as we get into today's topic, how to bring more energy. Let's get the quote first. Okay, this is a quote by Oprah Winfrey. She said, passion is energy. Feel the power that comes from focusing on what excites you.
Starting point is 00:01:47 Awesome. And an example? So the example I'm thinking about today is the football game on Saturday, Division II National Championship with the Mavericks played West Florida. And we were down by 16, if I got that right, at the top of the fourth quarter. And you know what? What I'm proud of, TJ, is just the talk that I heard on the sidelines. I heard, keep believing.
Starting point is 00:02:09 I heard people say, hey, we only need to score twice and we tie, right? Yeah, that's what we were all saying. But they could have been really down and in the dumps. But what I was proud of is just that they kept believing in each other. And I kept on hearing, keep believing, keep believing, keep fighting. And they did it, nearly tying the game. that they kept believing in each other. And I kept on hearing, like, keep believing, keep believing, keep fighting, you know. And they did it, nearly tying the game. So I was proud of what I saw in terms of their body language and what they said to each other.
Starting point is 00:02:37 Any other team may have just packed it up at halftime, honestly. And they did not. They came back and really made a game out of it. That's what football is all about. It really is. It is. And if you've been to games during the regular season, you've noticed that too, because yes, they destroyed a lot of teams during the regular season, but sometimes they didn't score first and they were like, okay, well, let's rally.
Starting point is 00:02:54 And they did. And that's cool. So what's kind of cool is this topic and that example, of course, is sports related. It's football, but we're going to kind of tweak this today and how to bring more energy. And really, this is perfect because of the holidays here. Kind of target towards like family and things like that, which is cool. So what are we talking about today and how does this connect to your book, Beyond Grit? So this connects to practice number seven, which is choosing empowering emotions. And I've worked with the team now, I think nine years doing mental training
Starting point is 00:03:24 with them. And so I had a workshop with them the day before, which was awesome. What an honor. And we were talking about building positive energy. And not only just a football team, but any team, a business team or a team within your family can create energy. And when they do that, they create what I call a psychological edge. And that means like waking up our actions and our voice, creating a shift. And we know that, you know, positive energy also makes other people around you better. Yeah. And so there are three things you said that bring positive energy. What's the first?
Starting point is 00:03:54 The first one is, you know, do you focus on what you have or what is missing in your life or what's missing on your family or what's missing on your team? And I think it's easy to focus on what's missing because our old brain, you know, is trained for us to or what's missing on your team. And I think it's easy to focus on what's missing because our old brain is trained for us to notice what's wrong, what we want more of. But the key is to redirect your mind to what's great about your family this holiday season. What's great about yourself? What are your strengths? What can you focus on that you already have? And the key is to train yourself to focus on what you have, not what's missing. All right. And what is the second thing we could do to bring more energy?
Starting point is 00:04:28 The second thing you can do this holiday season is to focus on what you can control, not what you can't control. And most people focus on what they can't control, TJ. But we know that elite athletes, they focus on what they can control, like their attitude, their attention, where they're directing their attention, their purpose, their effort, their emotions. And I think in a football game, it's really easy to focus on the other team or the refs or, you know, the weather. But the best dominate the controllables. They really find that they focus on what they can control. So that leads to high performance.
Starting point is 00:05:02 And so even when you're with your family this holiday season, you know, there might be a comment that said that you don't agree with. But the key is, can you stay focused on what you can control? Do you react and blow everything up or do you just move on? Let it go. I don't know. Yes, let it slide. And then what's the last thing we could do to have more positive energy? The last thing you could do is stay more focused on the present. And so do you focus more on the past or the present or the future? And most people would say they focus probably more on the past or the future, not in the present. But the present is the only place you can be your best. It's the only place you can play your best in sports.
Starting point is 00:05:40 And it's the only place that you can connect with others. It's really the only place that you can really be in the moment with your family this holiday season. So we want to move on quickly. Even though I know it hurts the Mavericks. It was hurting me yesterday that we lost. But the key is we want to move on that fast and stay more focused in the present. I am going to book my hotel room and go back next year maybe. How about that?
Starting point is 00:06:02 Awesome. I'm going. Let's do it. Let's get everybody back down there and bring an even bigger crowd next time around. And you're right. And that's one of the things I noticed at that game when a call maybe didn't go the way of the Mavericks. You know, coaches voiced their opinions
Starting point is 00:06:16 and they went back to the game. Players did not get involved. It was the fans in the stands that were very vocal and that's their job, right? Sure. But the rest of the team was just like Boy, that's unfortunate, next play, let's go Yeah, I heard that a lot
Starting point is 00:06:29 I heard like next play, move on, let's go You know, things like that Yeah, it's just a good example of a good team These guys were all pretty close-knit So what's our final point today And how to bring more energy? Well, energy is really a state of mind It's really a choice.
Starting point is 00:06:45 And there are things that maybe impact our energy levels like illness or injury. Both in here sniffling and coughing this morning. But day to day, you can really choose to decide to bring it. And you think about it like a power plant, right? A power plant doesn't have energy. It generates it. So just like us, we can generate energy. You and your family and your team are the same way.
Starting point is 00:07:05 We can generate positive energy. And so I encourage everybody to generate some energy this season. Focus on what you have, what you can control and stay in the present. Even at your sickest or most tired, you can bring positive energy. You might not feel like it, but you can at least have that positive attitude. How do we summarize today? So I'd say high performers choose positive energy because it makes them and others around them better. They do this by focusing on what they have, not what's missing. Focus on what they can control, not what they can't control. And the majority of their thoughts and focus is in the present.
