to be about 9 degrees for your high today.
Wind chill
looks like 14 below and current temperature, Logan, you said at one?
One to zero?
Something like that?
Yeah, you know, one, zero makes a big difference.
A whole degree.
I was reading Forbes magazine, an article that I saw had my friend's name in it.
I was in Forbes?
Not you.
Oh.
My other friend.
Oh.
Cinder Kampoff in studio.
Get over by the microphone. I'm so excited for you because
I was reading an article
in Forbes magazine this week and
boom, your name came up.
I was like,
hang on a second. I text you. I'm like,
was that you?
Forbes magazine.
She was talking about, well, they were talking about ways to train your brain like an elite
athlete, Cendra.
And so, first of all, welcome and good morning.
Good morning.
It's great to be here.
This is a bucket list goal to be in Forbes.
It's like one of the things that I wanted to do and it was so exciting.
Oh my gosh.
And how did you, when did you know you were going to be in Forbes magazine? And why didn't you tell me?
I would have talked about this maybe a month ago. And so I met this this author at an event,
and he was really intrigued by what I do. And so he's like, let's do this. All right. So let's
talk about this. Here's what they said. I have a quote. Cinder Kampoff is a top brain trainer who has worked with players on the playoff-bound Minnesota Vikings for the last four years.
She provided mental coaching for the team. She works one-on-one with some of the players.
The same principles this top brain coach teaches can help you grow your business if you have the grit, which is the same name as the book. So first of all, yes, congratulations, Cinder.
But second of all, you said those same principles can help us grow the business.
What are the principles and how many of them are there?
So there were six that we talked about in Forbes.
And I'll just kind of briefly talk about them or mention them.
And we'll talk about one of them today.
So stay processed, focused, let go quickly.
Third, expect adversity. Fourth,
dominate the controllables. Fifth, believe in your purpose. And sixth, own the moment.
All right. What are we talking about today then? Which one of those you said?
Yeah. So I thought I would pick out expect adversity because I was thinking right after
you set your goals in the beginning of the year, expecting adversity is important.
So we're supposed to expect bad things to happen.
Yeah.
Kind of in a way, right?
Kind of in a way.
Why is this important?
So let me give you a few examples.
In a study we conducted last year at Minnesota State where I teach, we asked elite athletes how they developed their grit.
And all of the elite athletes said that they had overcome significant adversity to get to where they are today. And even
another study I read said that when adults are asked the most important day of their life,
it was a day they had overcome significant adversity. So I think in the moment, it's
really easy to give up. It's really easy to believe that you can't handle whatever's going
on in your life or your business or in sport. But adversity helps us grow into the person that
we're supposed to become to reach our goals. So if we're looking at wanting to expect adversity
and know it's going to be part of the journey, what do we want to, what pitfalls do we want to
avoid? So there's three things. First, I think thinking that your goals are going to be easy
in 2020 is what you want to avoid because they're not going to be easy to go after if they're really big goals. Second, I think it's giving into the belief that
you can't do it and that you can't do difficult things. And then the third thing is you don't
want to give up easy because, you know, many people who experience adversity or setbacks,
they just decide to throw in the towel. But if you think about it, like everything magnificent
or awesome that you've ever accomplished actually
required or demanded grit and struggle and really going through the difficulty and adversity.
So we want to know that it's not going to be easy.
So what do we want to do then?
So we want to think like a pro athlete.
And the best athletes realize that adversity helps them grow and learn.
And they believe that adversity helps, like it's happening for them, not to them. And what this
means is they don't view adversity and setbacks like with a victim approach. Instead, they realize
they're in control of how they respond to a difficult situation. So we want to expect
difficulties to happen and plan for things to go wrong, just like they do.
That has been so instrumental in my life and even just the past couple of weeks.
I could only imagine.
Right.
Yeah. Realizing it's not going to be easy and, you know, embracing that. It's all about mindset, isn't it?
Absolutely. How do you summarize?
So I would say that high performers in sport, business, and in life, they keep going.
And they don't let adversity stop them.
They work around it.
They embrace it.
Because this helps them grow into the person they're supposed to become to reach their goals and their ultimate destiny.
So you get a power phrase for us every week that you bring.
What's this week's power phrase?
I embrace adversity.
I keep going.
I see difficulties as happening for me, not to me.
Cinder Kampoff, I am so proud of you.
