Starting point is 00:00:00 Welcome to High Performance Mindset with Dr. Sindra Kampoff. Do you want to reach your full potential, live a life of passion, go after your dreams? Each week we bring you strategies and interviews to help you ignite your mindset. Let's bring on Sindra. Sindra Kampoff in studio with us. It is time for, oh, it's so good to have you in. I was thinking about you yesterday when I was watching the news about Kobe Bryant, because we often, you and I, I mean, we often talk about high performing athletes and we lost one yesterday. I know. I know. I was shocked. You know, I think
Starting point is 00:00:47 just like most of the world, you know, can't even believe it. And I'm sure that's how people are even feeling this morning. So, you know, I watched the Grammys. I said the Grammys were kind of all about Kobe Bryant and bringing it back. Alicia Keys. Talk about grit, man. She had to get up in front of people and do what she did and kind of hold the whole thing together. I think she did a fantastic job. You were talking with your son about this. This is things if we have little athletes that are, you know, coaches, parents, they're going to need to be talking to the kids about this. Absolutely. So it was crazy because I was actually talking to my son, Blake, about Kobe Bryant the day before. And one thing that I was telling him is that I was listening to this interview where Kobe
Starting point is 00:01:28 was talking about how he got to be good at basketball. And he said in fifth grade, he actually didn't score any baskets. And the interviewer was like, what, did you play? And he said, oh, no, no, I played. And he said afterwards, my dad told me, he said, you know, whether you score zero or 60, I love you no matter what. And Colby said that that really gave him the confidence that he could fail and that he really chose to be great that day. And I think one thing that Colby is really known for, at least in my mind, that he'll always be known for is like the standard of excellence. And, you know, he said he started working on the fundamentals that day.
Starting point is 00:02:08 And in two years, he was one of the best in the state because he really worked to be his best. So then what is a lesson that you took away from that and something that the rest of us can take away from that interview? I think if you want to be great at something, you need to really work at it. And that's what he's known for. He would come two hours before practice, before it even started. Right from when he was a rookie to before he retired. And at his retirement ceremony, he said, this is a quote, he said, those things you stay up late and you work hard, those things when you don't feel like working, you're too tired. You don't want to push yourself, but you do it anyway. And then he said, that is actually the dream. And I think about being the best that you can be, embracing that
Starting point is 00:02:54 that's the process is actually the dream. The process is the dream. How does this apply to us? Well, I think the same can be said for building a great career in sports or in business or in life. The accomplishments that you have are really an afterthought to the process that it takes to get there. And the work is the dream. And so I think we really need to. I think one thing I'm taking from Colby is that we need to stay focused on the process of what it takes to be our best and care more about the process than the outcome or, you know, the thing at the end. So how can we do that? I think the process really is the small things you need to do to become the best at your craft. And so I'd encourage people to think about what's a
Starting point is 00:03:36 goal that they're going after in 2020 and what's it going to take to get there? Like, what's the thing that will move the needle? Okay. Right. Like, for example, if you want to run a marathon this year, what's the thing you need to do every day? And it might probably be running. You know, if you want to spend more time with your family, I think this, I think Colby's death also gave me, you know, just more perspective. I got to spend more time with my family. Maybe that means you play 30 minutes of games every night. Or if you're really working to build a business that you'd like, what is it the one thing that's going to move the needle? So how would you summarize this all for us today?
Starting point is 00:04:14 I'd say the best high performers in sport business in life, they really focus on being their best every day and their standard of excellence. They work to break down their goal and go after it. And I think they own the process like Kobe Bryant did. Very good. What's today's power phrase, Cendra? I attack the process. It takes me to reach my highest potential and I keep my focus on the process every day.
Starting point is 00:04:37 Keeping the focus on your process every single day. What we learned from Kobe Bryant, the process is the dream, Cendra Kampoff.
