Practice two, get clear on your purpose. The world's best own why they do what they do.
They keep their why front and
center. This purpose keeps them motivated and hungry when the going gets tough. Chapter seven,
own your why. Quote, working hard for something we don't care about is called stress. Working hard
for something we love is called passion. End quote. Simon Sinek. Your why is your purpose,
your cause, or your belief that inspires you to do what you do. When you know your why, End quote. Simon Sinek. spouse, friend. Your why is different. It is what ignites your desire and passion,
lights a fire in your belly, and keeps you passionate and excited. The truth is that
few people think extensively about why they do what they do. Instead, often our focus is on
results, like making more money or winning a championship. But results aren't a why. Results
are not the same as passion, purpose, or a cause. What do you enjoy most about
your work that you do or want to do? What is most exciting and gratifying about what you do?
What would you like to do more of? These are important questions. Without a clear connection
to your why, you can get off track, burnt out, and forget to make your why a priority. Simon Sinek, the author of the best-selling book, What's Your Why,
made the case that most people communicate from the inside out.
They communicate what they do first and then why they do it.
Simon argued that inspired people, athletes, leaders, coaches,
and organizations, and entrepreneurs, communicate from the inside out. They work
to understand why they do what they do, and then they communicate from their why.
They tell others about their why to keep themselves and others inspired. I know this from experience.
After working with hundreds of business owners, elite athletes, and championship teams,
I know that the number one thing motivating successful individuals is
their why. Everyone has a unique why. Sometimes it's to provide the best future for our family.
Sometimes it's to be the greatest wide receiver in a franchise. It can be to earn enough money
to retire in 10 years or contribute to a community by mentoring others. No matter what it is,
the world's best are clear on their why,
and that why inspires their actions. When you know your why, things start changing for you.
You attract the right people to your business and team, and you get the support you need.
You stay fueled and energized, and find more inspiration and a stronger sense of purpose
for what you do. You'll recognize you can get
through any difficulty or adversity because of what drives you. Tough days get easier.
So in order to think like the world's best, you need to plug into your deeper and bigger purpose.
Consider how what you do and want to do helps, inspires, or provides for the people and places
that are important to you.
It is easier to stay fueled when you know how you contribute to the lives of others.
When I work with teams, I start the discussion with a question.
When you look deep into your soul, what is the reason you do what you do?
Then, to go deeper into their whys and the good that comes from what they do,
I have them complete what I call the so that exercise.
You can do it too.
The so that exercise.
Begin by writing what you do or what you want to do at the top of a sheet of paper.
This might be vice president of company X
or professional basketball player for X team
or business owner of company Y.
Then write your answers to the prompt so that. Write
six responses. Your six so that's get to the heart of your why. Want to see how this works for me?
What I do. I speak to and coach leaders, entrepreneurs, professional athletes,
and championship teams so they can master their mindset and play bigger. So that number one,
I can help others show the talent and skills
that can sometimes be hidden by overthinking,
a lack of confidence, or heightened anxiety.
Number two, I can help others own their why
and live an intentional life going after their big dreams.
Number three, I can learn from game changers and the world's best
and share what they know.
Number four, I can be a role model for my two boys and show them that there are no limits
to what you can be.
Number five, I can inspire other women working in the field of performance psychology.
Number six, I can positively impact the world one person or team at a time.
Completing this exercise can be the first step in owning your why
and considering fully why you do what you do. Owning your why helps you stay motivated,
passionate, and engaged in your career, sport, and life. It is an important step towards figuring out
how you will achieve your goals and dreams. Your how can and will change as you encounter adversity, setbacks, and opportunities,
but your why remains the same. My why gives me a spark when I want to give up. When I face failure
or a lack of motivation, I remind myself of my why to stay fueled and gritty. Owning your why is one
step above knowing your why. When you own your why, you can and should share it. Shout it from the rooftops.
Tell your teammates, your leadership, your family, and your clients. Building your why helps others
identify with and connect to you. It builds trust. Post your why on your refrigerator, in your locker,
above your desk, or on your grit board. Put your why on your website and in your email signature.
Make a big deal about your why because it makes all the difference.
My high-performance game plan, own your why.
Number one, I will complete the so that exercise,
circling one or two of the answers
that seem most important to me.
Number two, I'll use my answers to the so that exercise
to write my why in a single sentence. Number three, I'll use my answers to the So That exercise to write my why in a single sentence.
Number three, I'll post that why somewhere I can see it every day.
Number four, I can share my why with someone new each day this week.
My high-performance power phrase, I own my why.
I keep my why front and center each day.
I communicate my why to keep myself and others inspired.
