Let's go.
Cinder Kampoff on the phone with us.
Good morning, Cinder.
Good morning.
It's great to talk with you both.
May the 4th be with you.
Oh, I love it.
Yes, it is May the 4th.
It's Star Wars Day, a day to talk about courage.
You said courage up is the topic.
You have a quote for us this morning.
Yes. Franklin D. Roosevelt said,
Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the assessment that something else is more important than the fear.
I like it. Of course, I like FDR quotes. He's a relative of mine, if you didn't know.
What?
Awesome.
Yeah.
Really?
Yeah, really. My family's related to his mother.
Wow, cool. I know. The to his mother. Wow, cool.
I know.
The more you know.
Bloodlines.
What inspired our topic today?
So Saturday, I attended a virtual RISE conference.
It was kind of fun to do from home and not have to travel.
And there were some great speakers like John Maxwell, I'm going to talk about today,
and Rachel Hollis, and Jen Hatmaker, and Donald Miller.
And one of the things that John Maxwell said,
so he's a New York Times bestselling author who's sold a million books on the topic of leadership.
He talked about Courage Up and just how to courage up.
And I'm going to talk about that today and just how I made sense of the conference as well.
Well, let's start unpacking this, Cindra.
What do you mean by courage up?
So I think what's interesting is courage is not the absence of fear or doubt.
We can train our minds to act more courageously every day.
I talk about this in Beyond Grit, the book.
The 10th practice is called Choose Courage Over Comfort.
And what I'm noticing is a lot of people are experiencing a lot of fear.
You know, like there's a fear of the unknown or fear of the future.
And I think what's important to know is that we, I don't think we want to eliminate fear completely
because it really keeps us safe. But this is a really important time where we have to manage
our fear. So what's important to understand about our fear? I think what's important to know is that
fear applies to everyone. And then also what's important to know is that fear lives in the future
and it's usually self-created. So we're fantasizing about the future in a negative way,
usually imagining the worst case scenario, right? So we can experience a lot of fear right now,
fear if we're going to make it through, fear if we can adjust our business,
fear if we're going to lose our job, fear if we're going to get the virus. And I think what's
important to know is that choosing courage is going to feel better than feeling the fear.
And so choosing to be creative, to grow your business or grow your fitness during this time
or try a new habit or try a new project, that's going to feel way better than feeling the fear.
So, Cinder, you have something called a Courage courage roadmap that can kind of help people develop their courage.
Can you kind of expand on that a little for us?
Yeah.
So courage is, you know, feeling the fear, but choosing to act bravely instead.
And what I'm noticing is a lot of people are talking about these what ifs.
So the courage roadmap is really help you write down your fear.
So what ifs is really part of the fear. You know,
we're thinking, well, what if I lose my job? Or what if I can't pay the mortgage? Or what if I'm
not teaching my kids correctly in online school? So what the roadmap is, is you write out your
what ifs. What are the things that are making you anxious or fearful? And then answer that with I
will. And so, for example, you might say, well, if I lose my job, I will file
for employment or unemployment. And I just read like 30 million people in the United States had
to file for unemployment. So the what ifs, just follow that with an I will. I think that's going
to take the sting out of your fear and also give you some strategies so that you're not
just living so much in the future. And you can really decide to use this courage roadmap to reduce that fear. So you have some observations about courage.
What are they? I have some observations because I noticed that courage is fueled by optimism and
hope and belief in yourself and gratitude. So these really empowering emotions and courage
is practiced by you. No one else can practice it. It's also a decision.
And so you can power, you can decide to feed your courage. And what John Maxwell said I really liked
is that courage grows by exercising it. It is not something you use. It's not something you store,
but it's something that you use. So how would you summarize today for us?
I'd say that the world's best choose courage instead
of fear. They feel the fear, but they don't let it stop them from what they want to do or have to do
or designed to do. And we can all use the courage roadmap to identify our fears like these what ifs
and then decide, okay, I will help us reduce the fear. And the last point is that, you know,
courage is really fueled by optimism, hope and hope and is a decision that we make.
So what is this week's power phrase then?
I choose courage over fear.
I fuel my courage with optimism and hope.
And remember, I can handle anything that comes my way.
You can, absolutely.
