Cinder Kampoff joining me on the phone today.
It's time for some motivation on a Monday.
Good morning, Cinder.
Good morning.
It's great to talk to you, Lisa.
Someday you'll be back in the studio with me.
I just know it.
But until then, this is the day.
Things are kind of starting to loosen up a little bit.
We're going to see how this goes.
And so we're talking about, I think, a perfect topic, bouncing back.
How to bounce back.
You have a quote for us.
Albert Einstein said, In the middle of every difficulty lies opportunity.
I like that.
What inspired the topic?
Well, I think this has been just a tough couple of months for people adjusting to online school
for kids and parents adopting to helping their kids with online school and balancing work
and maybe your work and your business has changed.
And so I think it's really important for us to not give up,
despite all these things we can't control, to keep going or to bounce back.
And that's what we're really talking about today is being resilient or bouncing back.
So what do you mean by resilient?
Well, it is our ability to bounce back.
I think about it as your bounce back factor.
And you actually have to experience adversity to be resilient.
You can't be resilient without it.
So it's our ability to recover quickly from difficulties, our ability to adapt.
And I think resilience is a quality that allows some people to really get knocked down by life,
but come back stronger than ever.
So how come this is important for us to apply right now?
Well, resilience is something that we can learn, Lisa. It's not something we're born with.
And we actually all have resilience in our history. Like we've all gone through difficult things before, maybe even thrived because of them. And I think COVID-19 is just what we've
been doing together, right? So we all have
experienced it together. So then how do we kind of train ourselves? How can we be resilient?
Yeah, well, there's a couple of ways we're going to talk about quickly. I think the first way
is to know that you can train your resilience. And one way is about how you respond to stress.
And I think the word stress is really interesting.
It just means like your demands are changing, things are changing, but you can see stress as like bad.
In psychology, we call this distress or good.
And that means you're seeing stress as good.
Like you stress is good, distress is bad.
And there's a great book by Kelly McGonigal called The Upside of Stress,
and that's really what it's about. And I heard somebody say the other day, like, if you were
asked a couple of months ago, if you could have a two-month break where you could be with your
family more, right, you probably would have said, okay, great, you know. And so the key is that we
really need to kind of see the opportunity in this. So what's another strategy to build our resilience?
The other strategy would be really to reframe an event.
Like, are we seeing it as a difficulty or as an opportunity?
And I think remembering that we're meant to adjust and adapt as humans are born to,
and we can do difficult things.
We've done difficult things before.
And so just
continuing to see the opportunity. Like I think for me, Lisa, my business has changed. A lot of
people's businesses have changed. So it's like, okay, I'm seeing it as a way to do more virtual
presentations or more coaching or do more things like this. I know it's got to be hard for some
people out there who have been furloughed or lost jobs because of this and trying to reframe that might be a little bit more difficult.
But I'm also thinking like this is just a time to learn about what you can do.
Yeah. And what you do like. Maybe you were in a job that you didn't really exactly like very much.
Yeah, absolutely. So there's always opportunities for that.
And how would you summarize today for us?
I would say, really, we were meant to adapt and adjust.
We're meant to be resilient or bounce back.
And we can get through this together.
So be careful how you're seeing stress.
Is it distress or eustress, bad stress or good stress?
And embrace the
challenges that are coming your way. Look to see the opportunity and reframe difficulties
into opportunity. That's one way to be more resilient.
Cinder, what's this week's power phrase?
I can bounce back. I can see opportunity in every difficulty.
And if people have questions and want to get in touch with you or find out more about your
