Hey, my name is Cindra Campoff and I'm a small-town Minnesota gal, Minnesota nice
as we like to say it, who followed her big dreams. I spent the last four years
working as a mental coach for the Minnesota Vikings, working one-on-one with
the players. I wrote a best-selling book about the mindset of the world's best
and I'm a keynote speaker and national leader in the field of sport and
performance psychology. And I am obsessed with showing you exactly how to develop the mindset of the world's best so you can accomplish all your goals and dreams.
So I'm over here following my big dreams and I'm here to inspire you and practically show you how to do the same.
And you know, when I'm not working, you'll find me playing Miss Pac-Man.
Yes, the 1980s game Miss Pac-Man. So take your notepad out, buckle up, and let's go.
This is the high performance mindset. Time to check in with Cinder Campoff and get a little
positivity. Normally on a Monday, we were off Monday. So we're joining her on a Tuesday via
the telephone. How are you doing, Cinder? I'm doing great. How are you both? Excellent. Did
you have a good weekend? Yes, it was so sunny. We didn't expect it. We thought it was going to rain
all weekend, so we really enjoyed the weather. Yeah, it got a little warmer than I thought it
was going to get, so that was nice. What are we talking about today? We are talking about purpose.
And the reason we're talking about it is a lot of people have come to me like during this time,
really searching for their purpose. And I think this time of uncertainty and change is kind of
a time for us to step back and reflect and determine if we're on the right path. It's
these times where we tend to go deeper with our purpose. Well, you have a quote that we usually start with.
Yes, it is by Terry Orlick.
He said, the heart of human excellence often begins to beat when you discover a pursuit that absorbs you or gives you a sense of meaning or passion.
All right. And is that what inspired the topic today? People have been coming to you?
Yes, people have been coming to me and I just heard more people like talking about it. I also did this amazing podcast interview with Richard Leiter
and he wrote a book called The Power of Purpose and we're going to talk about that a little bit
today. And Cinder, what do you mean by purpose? Can you expand on that a little for us?
Sure. So our purpose is really the reason that we're here on earth. What gets you out of bed
in the morning? And we all have, you know, we've all met people who've inspired us.
And you could tell they weren't just going through the motions,
but they were really fighting for something that was important to them.
And what's cool, what's important about this conversation
is to remember that everybody has a unique purpose.
And it really keeps us going in times of uncertainty.
And generally, it gives us a reason to keep going
and to persevere. So we might not know what the purpose is, what our purpose is. Why is it
important for us to find that purpose and to live on purpose? Yeah, good question. So our purpose is
really fundamental to our health, to healing and happiness. For example, researchers have found
that people who have a purpose are more likely to report being happy and that they're living a good life.
In fact, there's also research to say that when we live on purpose, we live up to seven to ten years longer.
So it just keeps us going.
But I think also what's interesting about that is about one-third of us really don't know what our purpose is.
So one out of three people are unsure,
even though it has this really important lasting impact on our health.
And, Cinder, for people who are in that one out of three group,
why is it important for us to understand our purpose?
So a few weeks ago, I interviewed him on my podcast called The High Performance Mindset. I interviewed Richard Leiter, And he wrote a book called The Power of Purpose.
And it was actually one of the first books that I read when I got back from the Boston
Marathon bombing.
So it was a really important day of my life.
And he was talking about how purpose is a choice.
It starts in the inside.
And what he was saying is like, it starts with reflecting in the inside, but it manifests
on the outside.
And what he was saying is that we really have this need to contribute to others and make the world a better place.
That's what the outside is.
But it's something that we need to practice.
It's not something that we just turn on automatically, but purpose is something we have to do and we have to activate.
And he described how there were 1,441 purpose moments in one day. So basically what
that means is there's a lot of times where we can kind of live our purpose if we really are
connected with and activate it. So what do you suggest are some strategies that we use in order
to try to find our purpose? I think it's really about reflection and exploration. I think that's
the key. And it's really a life journey. It's not
something that I think throughout our journey, we really kind of discover our purpose and it
might even change. What we can do when we're exploring and reflecting is we could even find
a purpose partner. So someone to talk about our purpose with. I have a great exercise in my book
called Beyond Grit, where we can write a purpose statement.
But I think the key is, you know, when you know your purpose, it's like driving your car with a
full tank of gas, right? You can't get anywhere if you don't have some gas in your car. So the
same kind of thing when you really know what your purpose is, it gives you energy and helps you stay
gritty even during this time of uncertainty and change.
So Sandra, how do you summarize today for us?
Sure.
The world's best really understand their purpose.
They're connected with the reason that they're here, which is really a life journey of exploration
and reflection.
And it's important because it's connected to our health and how long we live.
Each of us have our own purpose, our unique purpose.
And then living it is like driving your car with a full tank of gas.
What is this week's power phrase?
All right, here it is.
I live and play on purpose.
No one has the same experiences, knowledge, gifts as I do,
and I have a unique purpose and live that purpose.
