We're checking in with Cinder Kampoff this morning, a little positivity on a Monday.
Boy, can we sure use some words of wisdom.
Cinder, how you doing?
I'm doing pretty good.
How are you doing?
Well, we're doing well here in the studio.
We're trying to see the positive in all things.
And I said this morning, right when we went on the air, that if you look, there's good
happening anywhere from people helping to clean up the communities that were damaged, and people having their eyes opened in a new way that maybe they haven't had them opened before.
Among all the tragedy, if you pick out the good parts and look for the helpers,
as Mr. Rogers always said, you know, there's that.
So that's kind of how we're going to move through this Monday.
What's our topic today?
So we're talking about three powerful thought principles, and I thought I would start with this quote by Eleanor Roosevelt.
I thought it was really powerful. And so she said, with a new day comes new strength and new
thoughts, new strength and new thoughts. What inspired the topic today? Was it everything
that's going on? Yeah, everything that's going on. You know, I just think there's so much
uncertainty and change. And I think first COVID-19, we're still in it and recovering from it. And then all the riots in Minneapolis this week,
I think it's really easy to be filled with frustration and fear and anxiety and hopelessness.
Now, it should be obvious, Cyndra, but since you're far smarter than us,
can you kind of explain why our thoughts are so important?
Well, our thoughts drive everything that we do,
and our thoughts determine how we interact with others, how we feel about others, how we act,
and our thoughts really become our emotions that can lead to what we do, our actions, and our habits. There's a powerful research study by a neurologist named Caroline Leith, and she said
that, or she found that between 75 and 98% of our illnesses come from our thoughts.
So I think that really the point I'm making is that our thoughts become what we do and who we become.
So what powerful principle do you want to start with here?
I want to start with the idea that we don't need to believe everything we think.
And we all have negative thoughts.
I once read a book by Dr.
Daniel Amen called Change Your Brain, Change Your Life. And he talked about ants or automatic
negative thoughts. And it was many years ago, but really life changing for me. And you know,
not all negative thoughts are harmful. Sometimes negative thoughts keep us alive and safe. But the
problem is that our automatic negative thoughts can grow,
and negativity can take over our emotions, our body, our actions, and really our future.
So really noticing our automatic negative thoughts is really the first step in controlling our mind before it controls you.
Now, Sandra, I've heard you say the phrase, we need to talk to ourselves, but not listen.
What do you mean by that?
Well, you don't need to let all the negative thoughts impact you or remain in your mind for a long time.
So the listen really just means that we're listening to the automatic negative thoughts and believing them and believing the negativity.
And the talk means being intentional with your self-talk.
And I like this idea of putting my thoughts through a truth meter.
And this is what it means.
It means asking yourself three questions, quick questions like,
Is this thought true?
Does this thought serve me?
And if it doesn't serve me, then what's a better thought that can serve me?
And you could just do that quickly in your mind
and then talk to yourself instead of just listen.
Sending people off on a Monday, what's the best way to talk to ourselves today?
Well, so research shows that the world's best athletes and business people, they do talk differently to themselves.
And I like really quick things that I can use.
And I'm going to describe I will, I can, I am.
Just the beginning of those statements could be the best way to talk to yourself.
So I will is powerful because it's a statement about a positive change or intention and it
predicts your future.
So you might say, you know, I will stay calm under pressure.
And I can is a statement about your potential.
And it's a positive statement about really your ability to accomplish your goals and
dreams.
So you might say, like, I can start exercising. And I am is the most powerful phrase because it's a statement about
who you are and your identity. And I am really focuses on the traits inside of you. So I'd say
the most powerful way is I will, I can, I am. You can start with that and really let your mind
think anything powerful after that.
All right.
Give us a summary today.
If you don't train your mind, you are letting your thoughts happen by chance.
And we know that chance, to me, doesn't lead to success.
So you can start and reduce your negativity today and work to thrive.
You can reach your best more often when you do.
And so reducing your automatic negative thoughts can help you really reach your
full potential. So you can put your thoughts through the truth meter, like we talked about,
and choose I will, I can, or I am statement to give you a better chance of just reaching your
full potential. What's this week's power phrase? I will not believe everything I think. I will put
my thoughts through the truth meter, and I will talk powerfully to myself today. All right, Beyond Grit.
