Hi friends, my name is Dr. Sindhra Kampoff, a national leader in the field of sport and
performance psychology.
Every week I'm on the local radio sharing my top tips on exactly how to develop the
mindset of the world's best, so you can accomplish all your dreams.
Get ready for a jammed, packed episode focused on practical tips to help you get after your
goals and step out of your comfort zone.
Let's go.
Hey, we're talking today about embracing change. You have a quote for us.
I do. It's by Viktor Frankl. He said, when we are no longer able to change a situation,
we are challenged to change ourselves.
That's a good one. What inspired the topic?
I think last week was a tough week for some athletes, coaches, athletic directors,
both in bands or activities, because there were a lot of changes to fall sports because of COVID.
You know, like here in Minnesota, football and volleyball at the high school level was moved to the spring,
and then spring sports were moved to the summer.
And I heard that the NCAA decided that that 32 athletes would not have a national championship
which many of them kind of work for you know I think our maverick sports here so today I thought
we would talk about coping with these changes and even if we're not an athlete you know in our
society we're experiencing a lot of changes regardless of if we're in athletics or activities
or not. So Cinder where do we want to start with embracing the change?
I think first it's important to remember that it's okay whatever you're feeling. I know there's
some people who are really disappointed or frustrated, and about a third of us judge our
emotions or push them aside like we don't want to feel them. And I think it's important to remember
that all our emotions are valuable and they're not really good or bad. And instead, see your emotions as information or data.
And what that means to me is that data shows you what you really care about and what's important to you.
And if you didn't care about it, you wouldn't feel about it.
And so I know there are so many things that we really can't control right now, which you talk about a lot.
But what can we do right now, given that we can't control like right now, which you talk about a lot, but what can we
do right now, given that we can't control any of these decisions? Right, Lisa, I think you're right
that we can't control how COVID is going to last or the decisions made by the NCAA or the high
school league. There's really so many things outside of our control, but I think we can
control like where are we focused on going and we can control our new vision for ourselves or our team that we can get excited about and we can work towards.
And, you know, I just want you to think about that.
Like, what's something that you can get excited about?
Maybe it's not a national championship, but what could it be?
And if your spurter activity was new to the spring, like, could you use the fall to get really ready?
You know, what is your vision?
And then consider, like, what's one thing you could do today to work towards that vision?
What's one thing that you could do every day, right?
Because that's really what you can control.
You can control your attitude about the situation and your preparation and your effort, but
you can't control all these decisions that are made.
So, Cindra, a lot of us, well, everybody in the last especially handful of months
has already gone through a lot of changes in their day-to-day life,
their day-to-day way of thinking, and does that matter?
Is there some weight to that?
I think that does matter, Logan, and I think it's important to remember
that we have been adjusting and adapting, and it's humans that's really what we're designed to do.
We've been doing it all of our life, and especially in the last five months right since all of this started and
so i think it's helpful to remind yourself that you already have the tools inside of you
you've already gone through all these changes you've already been adjusting and adapting and
using these tools inside of you um and that you know you know we can also focus on the good in every situation.
And there's a lot to be focused on right now.
So what's the final point that you have for us today?
I think it's helpful to know that you're not the only one going through this and no matter
who you are, like my husband's a school principal or a teacher or a business owner or an athlete
or a coach, you know, there's always somebody that's going through exactly what you are
and that can help you just realize you can adjust and adapt to.
How would you summarize today for us?
I would say, sorry if you can hear my dog.
Hey, that's like normal at my house.
I know. I'm like, well, I'd summarize it like this. Remember, it's okay to feel whatever
you're feeling and there's no reason to judge your emotions as good or bad.
Instead, we can just use these feelings as information and data.
That's really what's important to you.
And there's so many things we can't control, but you can control a new vision for your future,
working towards that every day and just remembering that you've been adjusting and adapting, and you can still do that.
We talk about that power phrase, which is something that we can take with us on a Monday
and repeat through the week to just keep us grounded and remind us of these things.
What's the power phrase for this week?
I can adjust and adapt.
I can handle anything that comes my way.
