Hi friends, my name is Dr. Sindra Kampoff, a national leader in the field of sport and
performance psychology.
Every week I'm on the local radio sharing my top tips on exactly how to develop the
mindset of the world's best, so you can accomplish all your dreams.
Get ready for a jammed, packed episode focused on practical tips to help you get after your
goals and step out of your comfort zone.
Let's go.
We've got Cinder Kampoff on the line with us,
and we're talking about courage over comfort today.
Choosing courage over comfort.
Cinder, you have a quote to start off with.
Yes, this is a quote by Franklin D. Roosevelt.
He said,
Courage is not the absence of fear,
but rather the assessment that something else is more important than the fear.
Something else is more important than the fear.
Well, what do you mean by courage over comfort then?
Well, I think about our daily activities can be divided into two zones, like courage zone or comfort zone.
And when we're in our comfort zone, we don't really grow.
We play small, we dream small, and we can let fear, doubt, insecurity kind of get the best of us.
We don't really make our dreams happen.
But in our courage zone is really a place of growth, sometimes failure.
But it's really our potential zone because that's where really we're at our best.
And I like this quote by Franklin D. Roosevelt, like just this idea that courage is not the absence of fear,
but it's our ability to move towards the fear regardless of how we feel.
So what's important to understand about our comfort?
I think what's important to understand is that our brains are wired for comfort.
It feels really safe and good and it's kind of comfortable to stay comfortable.
But I think it's also important that for us to really reach our vision quick as we can,
we have to get uncomfortable every day.
And we can train our minds to act more courageously every day.
It's something I talk about in my book, Beyond Grit.
The 10th practice is choose courage over comfort.
So why is it important right now to get uncomfortable and right now to choose courage?
I think it's important right now because if you
want to become the leader that you can become or let's say build your business in this uncertain
time or stay passionate about sports even though that competitions or seasons aren't changing are
changing or I know that we're going back to school soon so it's like embracing that change of going
back to school that all really takes courage and getting uncomfortable.
And the way I think about it is like discomfort is the price you pay to really step into your vision and experience success.
And getting uncomfortable every day is actually a must for us all to reach our best.
So how do we do that?
How would you encourage us to get uncomfortable each day to look for those opportunities?
Well, I would say you could ask this question also.
What do I need to do today that is uncomfortable?
And when I've asked my clients that question, like in life, they might say, well, I need
to get to know someone new personally, or I need to apply for a new job, or be myself
more often.
In business, it might be, well, I need to pivot my business in a new direction.
In sport, maybe given, you know, that
things are changing, maybe it's like trying a new activity or sport or just staying passionate about
sport, even though there's, you know, no season and the season is changing. Everything is changing
so fast and we're just, we kind of feel like we're waiting. How do you summarize today for us?
I would say the world's best choose courage instead of comfort and to choose courage over
comfort you can consider asking yourself that question like what do I need to do today that
is uncomfortable and the good thing is courage is like a muscle the more you use it the better you
get at it but it is something we need to do to reach our vision and be our best so what could
you do today to be uncomfortable well what is this week's power phrase, Cindra? I choose courage over comfort. I flex my courage
muscle and go for it. If people want more information or if they want to check out that
practice in Beyond Grit that you talked about, where do we go? You can head
