goals and step out of your comfort zone.
Let's go.
It's a new time that we talked to Dr. Sindra Kampoff on a Monday to get us motivated. You
know, we have people sitting at work, whether you're at home, whatever that looks like for
you. Sindra, today we're talking about how failure is necessary for success. Can we talk a little bit
about what that is and as far as the quote that you have for us to
start off with? Yes. Michael Jordan once said, I can accept failure. Everyone fails at something,
but I can't accept not trying. The reason that I was thinking about this topic today is because
I just noticed a lot of people kind of holding themselves back because of fear of failure. I'm
seeing it in my coaching, but also in my like virtual keynotes that I'm doing.
And I'm seeing it in entrepreneurs who kind of are going after their dreams, because they might fail or even athletes who don't take risks because of fear of failure. So you titled today feel
failure is necessary for success. What do you exactly mean by that, though? So many times we
think that failure is the opposite of success, but it really isn't. It's necessary for
success. And I think if we reframe how we see failure, meaning if we see it as like the more
I fail, the more I actually succeed, I think that helps us relieve that fear of failure. And as long
as we're learning from it each time we fail, this can really help us embrace failure to reach our
back. Why do you think it is that we fear failing so much? Well, I think it's a couple reasons.
I think first it's rejection.
Like we don't want to disappoint people.
Like maybe the people that are, their opinion is really important to us.
So we maybe don't, you know, apply for that college or that dream job because we might
get rejected or ask that person on a date that we want to.
And I think the second reason is embarrassment. We worry what
other people will think of us, maybe not being seen as smart and as capable. So we don't put
ourselves out there because we might fail. But the thing is, is that if we really embrace failure as
important as success, it only helps us. So why do you think that self-compassion or taking care of
ourselves is a really important part when we embrace failure? Well, there's some really cool research actually showing that the
more kind of kind we are to ourselves, the better able that we can handle failure and we see it as
an opportunity to learn. And actually, when we are really kind to ourselves after we fail,
we're more motivated to improve ourselves and we're more confident. So I think the key is
to kind of embrace failure is necessary for success. We really do motivated to improve ourselves and we're more confident. So I think the key is to kind of embrace failure is necessary for success.
We really do have to show ourselves the same kindness that we would to a friend.
And when we do that, we're more motivated and we keep going and keep pursuing our goals.
What would you tell us to do?
I think what's most important, you know, if you aren't making a mistake,
realizing, you know, you aren't really pushing yourself to your potential. And when we fear failure, you're thinking about the
future and the things that could go wrong and you haven't even tried it. So I think the key is,
is to define failure on your terms. See it as the more that you fail, the more that you succeed.
And I think you'll see a noticeable change in how you feel and your actions.
Well, wrap it all up for us today.
What's a good summarization?
Okay, thanks, Lisa.
I'd say failure is a necessary part of success.
It's not the opposite of success.
And the more that you fail, the more that you actually succeed, as long as you keep
kind of learning from that failure.
So really, the key part is being kind to yourself, showing yourself the same kindness that you
would a friend.
And we have a power phrase heading forward for this Monday.
I embrace failure and I see it as a necessary part of my success and reaching my potential.
