And Cinder, today we are talking about three ways to develop
Starting point is 00:00:32 your grit. You usually start with a quote for us. Yes, this is a quote by Angela Duckworth. She is the author of the book called Grit. And she said, grit is sticking with your future day in, day out, and not just for a week, not just for a month, but for years. So what inspired our topic today? Well, I think developing our grit is no more important than ever before. I think because of all the negativity in the world, uncertainty in general, we have to stay passionate about what we're doing and what we enjoy. And really what grit means is just that, like having passion and purpose and sticking with your goals long term and your ability to do things even when they're hard and to keep going despite obstacles. We had called today three ways to develop your
Starting point is 00:01:17 grit. Why is grit important to develop? Yeah, Lisa, it's really interesting. It's been called the number one predictor of success. And the reason it's been called, Lisa, it's really interesting. It's been called the number one predictor of success. And the reason it's been called that is because it's connected to like in business, it's connected to more engagement at work and more entrepreneurial success and more earnings. And in sport, it's been connected to better performance. Even in school, it's connected to GPA and graduation rates. And in life in general, it's been connected to like our life satisfaction and our happiness. And we are less likely to burn out because when we're gritty, we really stay the course. We keep going despite failures or negativity
Starting point is 00:01:58 or rejection. And we stick with our commitments to ourselves and to our vision. So it sounds like something that we all need to have more of, but what's a way to develop our grit? Yeah, I would say it starts with understanding what you really, really want. You know, most people really don't know what they want. They don't know what their long-term goals are, and they haven't really spent time considering that, at least at a consistent level.
Starting point is 00:02:22 And we want to be clear on what we want and then figure out how to get there. So really, the desire has to come first, and then the how follows. So as people are listening, I want you to think about like, what do you really, really, really want? So you think that understanding our purpose or our why is really important for us to be gritty, but what do you mean by that? Sure. Well, grit is really powered by our purpose and owning why we do what we do. And your purpose is really the reason that you do what you do. It's connected to our health and happiness. People who understand their purpose actually live up to seven to 10 years longer. And when we own our purpose, it just keeps us going. It keeps
Starting point is 00:03:02 us taking risks. We're more likely to be absorbed in what we're doing. And so again, as people are listening, I want you to think about like, what is your purpose or your why? And what is a final way that we can all develop grit? I would say a final way is, you know, grit is fueled by empowering emotions like optimism and hope and confidence and gratitude. And that means like looking for what you know, grit is fueled by empowering emotions like optimism and hope and confidence and gratitude. And that means like looking for what you have, not just what's missing. That means being hopeful about the future, not believing the worst is going to come. It means like having gratitude for the good things, but also the difficult things in our lives. And we can choose to be
Starting point is 00:03:41 optimistic and hopeful and have gratitude even when times are difficult. Dr. Cinder Kampoff, we always talk about the fact that you do keynote speeches and you're doing trainings. What's the next thing coming down the pipe for you? Yeah, I'm actually pairing up and partnering up with a woman who wrote The Grit Factor. And I wrote the book Beyond Grit. And so I had her on my podcast a couple months ago. Her name is Shannon Huffman Paulson. And we are actually delivering a virtual workshop for people to learn about how they can develop their grit. So we're excited about it. And people can find out more information at
Starting point is 00:04:16 drsyndra.com. And how would you summarize today for us? So grit has been described as the number one predictor of success. And so it's essential for us to keep working on because it's connected to work and sport and education. And so we want to keep developing our grit by understanding what we really want, by connecting to our purpose and being fueled by optimism and hope and gratitude. You usually leave us with a power phrase to kind of get us through the rest of the week. What's the power phrase today? Today it is this, I am gritty.
