Knowing what you want also helps you say “no” to things that you don’t want. You design your own destiny and only you can develop your grit. Cindra suggests for us to consider what we want today.     Power Phrase this Week: “I get clear on what I want and stay open to opportunities.”

We need to train our brain and Dr. Sindra Kampoff joins us this morning. Well,
Starting point is 00:00:31 happy 21, Sindra. Happy 21. It's great to be here, Lisa. Well, thanks so much. Let's talk about training your brain for the new year. What's the quote we're going to start with today? Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, Once you make a decision, the universe conspires to make it happen. So you've got an example to start with. So I think this is a great example of training your brain. So doctors and scientists and other experts really said the human body was simply incapable of running a mile under four minutes. Some people actually thought our heart would explode if we ran that fast.
Starting point is 00:01:09 But Roger Bannister did it anyway back in 1954. And I think one of the most important things is he visualized it every single day. He knew with certainty that he could make it happen. And the wild thing, Lisa, is that after he did it, multiple people ran under four minutes that year. It was like he just needed, other people needed kind of this seeing it happen and rather doing it to believe that they could do it. And so what are we talking about today?
Starting point is 00:01:34 Well, today what we're talking about is getting clear on what we want individually. And I think what's interesting is most people really don't know what they want. It's really hard for us to get clear on what we want. But people who know what they want, meaning what they want for their future, what they want for their goals, they kind of operate differently. And the reason they do that is because when you know what you want, you can selectively, your brain selectively attends to what's exciting and interesting to you and you notice new opportunities. For example, like, have you ever bought a new car and then all of a sudden you see other cars like your car? Yes. Yeah,
Starting point is 00:02:12 kind of selectively attending to them. We start noticing them. And before you wouldn't have noticed. Yeah. Why is this important for us? Well, I think this is important for us, particularly at the beginning of a new year. And when you know what you want, it's similar to buying a car. You start seeing all the opportunities and you see kind of quicker ways to get really towards your goals and your dreams and accomplishing them. But if you're unsure, you can feel unmotivated, maybe confused. You're not sure which opportunities to follow. And when you know what you want you can you really notice these opportunities and you have courage to go after them so how does this knowing
Starting point is 00:02:50 what you want actually help us well i think it also helps us because we know what opportunities to say no to and we can't really say no if we're not really certain what we want. I really like this quote by Jim Collins in a book, Good to Great. And he said, Lisa, he said, once in the opportunity or once in a lifetime opportunity is irrelevant. And if it's the wrong opportunity. And I think that's helpful because, you know, we might get these opportunities. But if it's the wrong opportunity, that's not really, you know, something that's going to be beneficial for us. So I think the really key is the new year is getting clear on what exactly that you'd like for the year, what exactly you'd like for the years to come. That's a big question. What do we do from here? What would you tell us to do? Well, I would say from here, consider what do you want
Starting point is 00:03:41 for the new year? And maybe what do you want for the next five and maybe what do you want for the next five years. And if you're unsure, that's okay. I think it's hard to get clarity on this. But keep it front and center every day. Maybe in the morning reflect on that question. I think it's important because really what we're talking about is grit. And that means kind of staying with what you want and getting clear on what you want. And that's not something that we're born with. It's something that we actually practice. So I think the important thing is to remember that we each design our own future and we can
Starting point is 00:04:16 take control of it, but it takes some clarity to get there. Can you summarize today for us? You bet. I would say that high performers spend time considering what they want. And they keep their mind open to opportunities. They notice opportunities when you know what you want. And it also helps you say no to things that you don't want. So the key is to continue to develop your grid. Ask yourself the question, what is it that you want for this coming year? What is it that you want for the future? And keep that in mind. And send us into the week with a
Starting point is 00:04:49 power phrase. It goes like this. I get clear on what I want and stay open to opportunities. All right.
