Starting point is 00:00:00 Hi friends, my name is Dr. Sindra Campoff, a national leader in the field of sport and performance psychology. Get ready for a jammed packed episode focused on practical tips to help you get after your goals and step out of your comfort zone. Let's go. We check in with Sindra Kampoff and we are talking about is your mind acting as a friend or an enemy? Sindra, you usually have a quote to start us off with. I'm going to start with a quote by Yoda. He said, the dark side clouds everything. Impossible to see the light the future is. Okay, so why are we talking about this today?
Starting point is 00:00:48 Well, a few years ago, over Christmas break, I actually watched all the Star Wars movies with my son Blake, and it was so fun. And we were talking a lot about the Yoda character, right? Yoda is among the oldest and most stoic, powerful Jedi masters. He's 800 years old and has so much kind of wisdom to share. And Darth Vader has the potential to kind of be the same powerful Jedi, but chooses negativity in the dark side. And today, I wanted to think about our mind in a similar way. The idea that we all have this inner Jedi
Starting point is 00:01:16 and this inner Darth Vader. Oh, I really like the analogy, especially because I'm kind of a Star Wars geek. Tell us more about the differences between the two. Well, if you think about the, you know, Yoda, he is calm and confident. He's motivated more by empathy or curiosity, purpose. And our inner Jedi is really powered by a different part of our brain than our Darth Vader. So it's powered by the prefrontal cortex or the front part of our brain. And we tap into it, it leads to more happiness and generally help us be a high performer but our inner Darth Vader on the other hand kind of represents when we sabotage our success. We're motivated by fear or shame or judgment or stress and it's actually powered by our limbic system or the back part of our brain. Can you give us any examples in our lives about how this appears? You know, there are times where we sabotage our own success.
Starting point is 00:02:07 You know, maybe, for example, you might be waking up in the middle of the night. Your mind is full of fear, anxiety, you can't sleep. Or when we overthink things and our mind kind of races on a loop, where we're thinking about the same thing over and over again. And that's when our mind is really working kind of as an internal enemy. But our inner Yoda, our inner Jedi represents we're really thinking that I'm perfect. We're acting as our own best friend. And when we tap into that, we experience more success just in general, like in our work, in our relationships, and just more creativity in general too.
Starting point is 00:02:39 So what do you do when you notice yourself getting in your own way? What do you tell people to do well i think the key lease is to remember that these thought patterns really have developed over our lifetime and early in our life to protect ourselves and they're habitual they're automatic and they work kind of against their own best efforts so the first step is to really observe your thoughts and your feelings especially when they're sabotaging our own success. And think about how you can tap into your inner Jedi. And when we do that, that leads us to perform at our best and just be happier in general. Do you have a final point, Sandra?
Starting point is 00:03:18 Yeah, you bet. You know, I'd say ask yourself, as you're listening, what would help you tap into your inner Jedi more often so you experience more passion and purpose and creativity and empathy? And I find, Lisa, it takes daily effort. And specifically remembering that your focus determines how you feel. So we can shift our focus. And this week, I'm just going to encourage people to engage in really thought patterns that help us and shift our focus to this inner Yoda. Well, wrap it all up for us. Give us a nice summary.
Starting point is 00:03:50 Okay, I'd say we all have an inner Jedi and an inner Darth Vader and this is why we really have to train our mind every day. You know, we can all experience fear and judgment, but the key is to observe those feelings and tap into your inner Deadeye by shifting your focus. So what's our power phrase as we head through the week? I channel my inner Yoda each day. I like that one. It's a Star Wars reference today for us.
