Let's go.
Cindra Kampoff joining us again this morning. And Cindra, we're talking about legends and how
they're made with grit. You start with a quote for us. This is by Alison Felix. She's the most
decorated American track and field athlete of all time. And she said, I lose much more than I win,
but I found that I learned more from my losses and that I've gained much more in value in the journey towards a goal than actually achieving
that goal.
Oh, wow.
Towards the journey more than the achievement of the goal.
I like this.
So how do you want to start today?
Well, I'm going to start with actually Allison's story.
So she's 35 years old and the Olympics just concluded.
This is her first, her fifth Olympic Games, Lisa.
So her first Olympics was 17 years ago.
Wow.
And she was just like two years removed from pregnancy complications that she says could have taken her life and her daughter's life.
And I was watching the 400 meters, which was her last race, her individual race.
And she was in fourth and just really summoned this kind of burst of speed to
grab the bronze medal and she said this she said earlier she was looking through some of the videos
that she had taped in the hospital with her daughter cammy and she had watched some videos
of just her coming back and how it was really really hard and she said that's what she tapped
into so this bronze was her her 10th o Olympic medal, which made her the most medals ever won by a woman track athlete ever.
Wow.
And so you work with a lot of these Olympians, and you worked with Olympians that were in Tokyo.
What do you see is a trait of high performers in her response?
Well, I think she symbolizes grit, which is really having passion and perseverance towards your very long-term goals, despite all the obstacles. And she talked about how her purpose was different
in these Olympic games. Like she was running for her daughter. She was running for other mothers.
She was running because Nike actually cut her compensation by 70% right when she was pregnant.
And so she wanted to prove them wrong and she she was running to kind of
wear her own shoes because she had just started this brand of a shoe company and so i think her
purpose was different and that's what she had overcome really to get this tenth medal
so why is grit important for all of us to develop even though we're not olympic runners
well grit has been described as the
number one predictor of our long-term success. So it's really the determining factor between
giving up and staying committed and passionate about what you're doing. And it's been connected
to success in both education and in sport and in business. For example, Lisa, you know, gritty
people reach higher levels of leadership in their business. Sales teams who have grit have higher
sales performance. And it also kind of chooses, we choose different things, like we're less likely to
make harmful choices like internet addiction and gambling and excessive spending when we're gritty.
So, Cinder, what is one way that we can, as regular people, develop our grit and keep developing it?
Well, that's a great question.
You know, and I really say that grit is manifested really by working towards long-term goals,
you know, ones that take years and years to and months and months to achieve.
So I'm just going to ask people who are listening, you know,
what's a big goal that you're really working towards? You know, what's going to take years and years of hard work and dedication and sacrifice to build?
And then are you putting the most important things first in your day to achieve that?
And what's another way we can keep developing that grit?
Well, we will encounter, you know, plenty of obstacles and setbacks.
I think Allison is a great example of that towards reaching our goals.
And some of these obstacles are external, like things we can't control.
But Lisa, the thing I've seen is the majority of obstacles are really inside our control.
They're more internal blocks and barriers related to our own mindset.
So it just shows you that we need to train our mind and that when we experience obstacles outside of our control, we can just ask ourselves, you know, what's the gift?
What's the thing I'm learning from this?
How is this difficulty happening for me? And when
we focus on the gains, we can find a more empowering meaning that can really keep us
going and help us stay gritty. I like that. That makes sense. Always a good reminder for us. Do you
have a final point? I would say that grit is really described as the number one predictor of our
success. And we need to develop our grit to be successful so we can consider you know what our long-term goals are and then remember that we're going to experience obstacles
and step back but we can focus on the gains and find the empowering meaning even in the obstacle
cinderella you usually leave us with a power phrase to help get us through the week kind of
a mantra something we can repeat to ourselves what is it this week i am gritty and i am passionate
i have a clear vision
