Let's go.
We check in with Cinder Kampoff this morning. How are you doing, Cinder?
Great. How are you, Lisa?
Excellent. We talk to you every week and you usually start us off with some kind of a quote.
What's our quote this week?
This is a great quote by Abraham Lincoln. He said,
the best way to predict the future is to create it.
Create the future. I like that. So we're kind of reflecting on
the year past as we move kind of reflecting on the year
past as we move forward. What inspired the topic? Well, today we're talking about reflecting on the
year and to help us continue to develop our grit. And I think developing our grit is even more
important than ever before, because we have to stay passionate about what we're doing. And there's
so much negativity and uncertainty in the world. And really what I mean by grit is having passion
and purpose and perseverance for our long term goals. So our ability to stick with things even when they're
difficult or when we experience obstacles. So you titled today Reflecting on 2021. What do
you exactly mean by that? Well, so what I mean is when we think about developing our grit,
by the way, grit has been described as the number one predictor of our success because in business,
we're more engaged when we're grittier. We actually earn more and in sport, we have a better performance. And in
education, grit has been connected to our GPA and graduation rate. So today we're reflecting on 2021
to help us develop our grit. And so we stay focused on our goals for 2022 and think about what they
are and so that we continue to learn and grow from this year. And so as we wrap up this year, it's really important to reflect on the year to help us continue to
develop our grit. So, Cinder, what's the first question that we can ask ourselves as we are
wrapping up our 2021? So the first question you can think about is like, what did you learn this
year? You know, what are the lessons that you want to take with you to 2022? And as we think about
developing our grit, we need to keep going
and keep learning about ourselves and to consider what the goals are that we really want. And so,
as I think, Lisa, about this year, what I've learned in my own business, in my own career,
is like relationships are essential. And that's one way to continue to level up your impact is
just by continuing to build others up.
And I also learned the importance of pivoting
and adjusting my own business in the pandemic.
Yeah, I think we all learned a little bit
about how to be flexible in that way
with the last couple of years that we've lived through here.
So what's another question that we can ask ourselves?
A second question you could ask yourself
is how did you fail this year? And that's probably
an interesting question. You're thinking, wow, why should I think about failure? But developing our
grid is really important. We need to keep growing from failure and embracing the failure. And I love
the story about Sarah Blakely, who started the company called Spanx, who's just like $5,000 of
her own money. And she became the U.S.'s youngest self-made female billionaire. And she
credits part of her success to her dad. And her dad would always ask this question around the
dinner table, the same question every night. And it was, how did you fail this week? And so she
learned to not be paralyzed by fear of failure. And that really defines failure as something that
you don't try instead of not achieving the right outcome. So I think when you think about how did we fail or what did we learn from it this year? What is the final question that we can ask
ourselves as we wrap up our year? So we can ask ourselves, what do we want in 2022 that might be
similar or different from this year in 2021? So grit really starts with considering what do we
really, really want? And most people don't really have thought about that at a deep level or a consistent level. So getting clear on what you really want is important. So the desire comes
first and then the how follows. So you can ask yourself, what do you really want next year that
might be similar or different to this year? Cinder, how can you summarize today for us?
Well, GRIT has been described as the number one predictor of our own success. So it's
really essential that we develop it because it's connected to our own performance in sports and in
work and in school. So we can develop it this year by asking ourselves, you know, what did we learn
in 2021 and how did we fail? And then what do we want in 2022 that might be similar or different
than this year? You usually finish up our day and our time together with a power phrase, a quote that can take us through the day.
What is today's power phrase?
I am gritty and I am passionate about and have a clear vision for my own future.
I love it.
